Recent events have me thinking about franchises revisiting and recontextualizing characters. 

I know a common argument when it comes to representation is that “they should just make a new character,” and sometimes that can work. Sometimes a writer or franchise can use a new character to show how much they’ve grown and not repeat the mistakes of the past.

But I think there’s also something to revisiting characters that creators/franchises got wrong the first time around. To revisiting the legacy of a character and saying “no, we shouldn’t have done that. Let’s give this another go.”

#yes this was inspired by the news about Bridget from Guilty Gear #look it’s no small thing that the character who was THE face of trap memeing and fetishization #is now canonically acknowledged as a trans girl and treated as such by the narrative #but this also made me think of Togashi’s evolution between YYH and HxH #and because she’s always at the forefront of my mind Azula #and what recontextualization would look like for her #such as less ableist portrayals of mental illness for one #hell maybe less trying to build her up as the scariest thing ever #when she’s an incredibly talented and dangerous teenager sure #but still not an engine of murder and torture #yes there are cases so flawed they’re unsalvageable #but I think a lot of cases are more a lack of will #dragonfruit’s oc

✧ NOTES ✧ - Although in-game she has the corpo lifepath, Valerie's career history is pretty varied before she joins counter-intel: Biotechnica data analyst, a slew of random service jobs, hostess (with a side hustle helping Jackie con some of her more notorious clients), and Arasaka security (which is how she met Jenkins). - Valerie doesn't dye her hair blue--She did when she first made the change, but she uses a cosmetic nanotech implant to alter the color of the strands at the root. - She had a very non-traditional education: Valerie was in the Night City public school system for elementary school, but she was pulled out when her maternal grandparents insisted on funding extensive private tutoring until she was 18. Learning Japanese was a part of that curriculum. - Her father was also very steadfast about the right to bear arms, and she was just 7 years old when she first learned how to handle firearms. - Valerie doesn't drink alcohol or do drugs. Hiiii we love to be unfashionably late to things, so here's that one oc evolution meme! Featuring OCs that are also alters that are also OCs (you understand). Without further ado...

The ts3 ones are actually bases our partner did, iirc? These two are technically shared ocs between the two of us, but we're the one with the dorks in our head, so we get last say rights lol. I'm going to ramble under the cut about my thoughts on it! :D

I feel like, above all else, we've found a better middle-ground between cartoon-y and realistic sims! Especially with Carter's 2017 sims, he's almost uncanny, I'd say? The eyes feel weird to me at least, but with the 2024 one, I think we figured out how to make him look like he's running on 10 minutes of sleep and 5 coffees without making me worried about him enough to ask him about it pffff.

We keep having repeated phases in our art where we draw people with too much weight or the opposite and there's no middle ground, and that's getting kinda apparent here too, which surprises me! I'd say Fritz' 2017 TS4 sim is definitely not as fat as he should be, while Carter's is too chubby for how he really is? We're still working on hitting the mark for the 2024 ones (Fritz could go a little fatter still and Carter could go thinner), but I think we're getting at least to a point where it's more realistic proportioning! I hope at least, heh...

Also, most notably, we started being more deliberate in our cc, heh. I think the 2017 ts4 sims only have like... Carter's septum as CC (pre-werewolves rip) I think? And the CAS bg of course. The 2017 ts3 sims do use CC, but our partner just... sent us a zip of all the ones she used, so that doesn't really count pfff.

Belated THSC Valentine's Day Art! (+Bonus OC Art)

Hey, I realized I didn't make anything for Valentine's Day, so I've been scribbling since yesterday to make some cute ship art! You know the drill, probably: CopperRight, Curtisson, PanPrice, and Stickvin! Plus some OCs from a fanfiction I'm in the process of refinishing and posting to AO3; I'll leave those under the Keep Reading line.

Also, I guess I put text in my comics instead of putting them beneath the pictures now. Art is a constant evolution, blah blah blah.

It occurred to me as I was coloring this that the joke only makes sense in text form, so either Right Hand Man thinks in acronyms, or Reginald literally pronounced text speak. Also, Reg would wear a big stupid sleeping cap to bed, because he's just that extra.

Dang, I feel like my Curtisson art is always mildly angsty; first the carnival art, and now Valentine's day! At least they can kiss and make up. Also, drawing the hysterically sobbing emoji is extremely fun. Like, ridiculously so. It's so darned funny... I might have a problem.

PanPrice:

At this point, I was tired of writing and just stuck to the tried and true art of silent story telling. Dave talks too much; Rupert wants his kiss! (First time drawing a serious [i.e., non-meme] mouth on mouth kiss; Rupert's hard to draw from this angle! So are a lot of characters, actually...)

Stickvin:

First time drawing a character carrying someone in their arms! (The "Ooh Mr. Copperbottom" post doesn't count; most of that was offscreen.) Portions are hard! Just pretend there's a helicopter exploding in the background; it's late and I didn't have the energy to draw it.

Okay, so I've got more than one answer for this one because my creations are diverse in some ways.

THIS ONE is among my absolute faves in terms of how I drew the characters and the layout(?) because this is not an original of mine; it was from the great Redneck Doug and I only illustrated it.

THIS and THIS (which are two of my latest creations) are definitely among my faves because I JUST LOVE MY IMPROVEMENT IN TERMS OF ART. I've done the Barbie Mugshot Meme about four times before this and it's like I had (kind of) got good in it? Does that make sense?

THIS ONE because when you read the caption for this, you'll find out how I came up with this idea from a prompt. And I love the way I interpreted said prompt. And I also made it on my birthday.

[EDIT] Lemme add THIS ONE too. This is one of my favorite redraws because it's based on a Ghibli screenshot that I love so much and can watch forever. I also shipped Omega and Benni on this one.

On the other hand, THIS ONE is not Star Wars but it's one of my faves because it features my evolution in style. Prior to joining Tumblr, I've drawn very close to realism but I soon transitioned into something stylized. This artwork featured my first complete evolution.

And last but not the least is THIS. So a little background on how I do my stuff: whenever I try something new in style or color, I try it with my OC Shelby first. This is because I had her memorized that I can easily play with stylization and the such. And this artwork was when I discovered the palette/tones that I would want to be the theme of my posts. This was when I realized that I love coffee tones so much that I decided to use them the rest of my posts.
