While every force available in the world is searching for the 5 people in the oceangate submersible, a boat filled with mostly Syrian and Pakistani refugees sank under still “unknown” circumstances off the coast of Peloponnisos, Greece (with the coast guard present). More than 600 people drowned but guess which of the two is making headlines

"Private submarine carrying several billionaire tourists goes missing while surveying the wreckage of the Titanic."
Well, it had to happen eventually. This is where big-ticket extreme tourism and shooting untrained assholes into space and such was always going to lead – frankly, it's surprising that it took this long for a major incident to crop up.
"One of the missing passengers is the president and CEO of the company that owns and operates the submarine."
Huh. Well, points for putting his money where his mouth is, I guess. I wonder if–
"The missing CEO's name is Stockton Rush."
Oh, bullshit. That's not a real person – that's the name of a guy who builds an inexplicably 1950s-themed underwater theme park and then gets eaten by a shark in a cautionary tale about the perils of libertarianism. That's the name of a guy who carries off an oceanfront real estate scam that somehow ends with Superman fighting a telepathic squid. Fucking "Stockton Rush". Unbelievable.

this is probably the best take I’ve heard so far on the debate of people being told that they aren’t having enough ‘compassion’ for billionaires making bad decisions and paying the obvious consequences for it

the passengers on oceangate are dead (they imploded) and they confirmed the debris was from the submersible but the shit that has me fucking losing it is that the logitech controller made it out almost unscathed

The people who are like "why are you wishing death on these billionaires?!" are not understanding what is going on. It's one thing to wish death on people and it's another thing to have no sympathy for people who died in a situation they were cautioned heavily to not do.
I don't want anyone to die, to be truthful; but here are the facts:
That sub is 2 miles down in the ocean where the pressure is immense and the temperature is unbearable.
The Titanic wreckage is literally 111 years old. The Titanic is wasting away and any slight jarring on her will cause her to collapse in that space. This is not new news.
The safest way to experience the Titanic's wreckage is looking through archives OR going to the museum. I know it would be astounding to look at in person, but... no.
Most importantly, the wreckage is also a graveyard. People's bones disintegrated because of the pressure and salinity of the water, but the shoes, that were treated with tannic acid, remain. Anybody with common sense knows that you don't go an disturb and desecrate graveyards. You just don't.
So, no... I feel zero sympathy for those people who should've just been told "no" more often in their life.
{EDIT: The 19 year old is the only one to get sympathy from me. Suleman deserved better. That's it}

Idk I just think that “I have empathy for the friends and family of those that were lost” and “based on everything we’ve learned, going down in that death-trap was an incredibly stupid decision and anyone could see that” and “it is ridiculous anyone would pay 250k to go see a mass grave, the wealth gap has gotten out of hand so I can’t find it in myself to shed tears for the men involved” and “it is heartbreaking a teenage boy was lost because he wanted to impress his father” are statements that can coexist.
Human emotions are grey.
