i was asked to write some tips for polaroid-beginners. so. here they are.

Some ideas for polaroid-photographers.

1. Seek community.

Sharing your pictures, your ideas, your tricks, getting inspired by others is, in my experience the best thing to keep you going. And - contrary to some other´s ideas - it´s not a single shot that counts. Keep photographing. Keep doing it for years, get better than you were a week, a month, a year ago. Getting into some kind of community (especially with polaroids) will show you what other can do with the same camera, the same material (no excuses here). First some of them will awe you. Some of them will still be able to do that years later - but after a while you will learn and say : "I can do that ,too" - or even: "I can do this better"… I´m shooting polaroids for 12 years now and i still get inspired just by looking at other ppl´s work. I still recommend polanoid. net.

2. For all that fancy "new" cameras - if you got money to spent for a camera i still recommend a sx-70. Get yourself a decent SX-70, maybe a flash unit and a close up lens, and you have all you need.

3. After that - spent your money on film. If you get a good bargain (e.g. a bulk of outdated film) FIRST spent your money on film and then try to get the camera you need for that film.

4. "If your picture is not good, you´re not close enough." ( Frank Capa, i think (Sorry it‘s Robert Capa..thanks for the Input!) - but especially true for Polaroiders)

5. Basic tips: - Get close enough. - Don´t cram to much onto a picture. - Take the camera with you wherever you go. - Rule of thirds. - if shooting outdoors - look for interesting light ( early morning / afternoon), snow, or fog. light is more important than location. - follow your obsessions - take pictures of what you love. (even - or especially when- you can´t show these shots to others) - get yourself a jacket with big pockets. - if in doubt, use a tripod. - don´t throw anything away. - embrace the flaws.

6. Keep a notebook. It gives you a good place to put the bad pictures.

7. Don´t Panic. You will make mistakes. Film will jam. Some film won´t work. Things will not turn out like you planned. Sometimes a camera will break. Sometimes you´ll forget something. People will disappoint you. Keep shooting anyway.

8. Try to learn patience. One mistake i keep repeating is to shoot a series of pictures only to notice that I had something wrong, which i could have seen if i had waited for the first shot to develop.
