Pogohammer Time.

All the experimentation with totem lathes and captchalogue cards was something I read through rather quickly and didn’t give a lot of deeper thought to my first time around. And nothing has changed! Moving on. 

So the server player is only able to act as an observer and facilitator, completely unable to move the client side in any direction or another physically. Rose theorizes that the game would consider that a type of cheating, and only touches on something I think is really important in SBURB and therefore Homestuck as an entity.

Physically pushing any player in one way or another affects the balance of Justice and Heroism. Your actions can only be rewarded or otherwise if they were, in fact, an act of your own free will. I find it interesting the specific ways in which the game decides to limit the player characters and to what end. Very few things are forcibly simplified in Homestuck, this is one of my favorites. Only partially influenced by my extreme aversion to people touching me without explicit permission.

You know the fuck what? I didn’t give Jade anywhere near the love, appreciation and credit she deserves. Shame on me. I think she intimidated me, and I didn’t like the way she knew things but wouldn’t tell her friends that information. She was doing what she thought was best, though! The mayor ‘s thoughts reflects the beta kids’ current future (I’m not going to pretend I understand when exactly the mayor is in relation to the kids and their exploits at this time, especially considering how much of the comic I’ve forgotten). The chessboard and aversion to kings is clearly based on experience, but he straight up draws a clear depiction of the kids’ planets, derse, prospit, and…well, that’s it so far but it feels very significant! Maybe this is straight up covered later but did he see these things in his past? Er, mayor pronouns? It’s past? H-her past? I don’t know that’s just the mayor.

Anyway, did the quantum mechanics do quantum things to make the mayor’s ‘random’ imagination match eventual and inevitable reality or vice versa or none of the above? Do you, reader, know the answer? Is it painful reading as I contemplate things that will simply be revealed as I, myself, read on? Good. Suffer. I contemplate when and over what I please.

Call me wizard the way I ponder these orbs.

I don’t care who the fuck you are or how over-memed this moment has been- this shit is hilarious. 

The mayor helpfully outlines another example of my previous talking point- interesting ways in which SBURB and it’s complex ways of facilitating the complex perceptible world around it’s players chooses to limit that complexity.

Also, the unappetizing sludge that is created when the Mayor tries to appearify something that would create a time paradox is reminiscent of nickelodeon circa my childhood. I am not immune to nostalgia bias.

Holy shit. I was entirely unprepared for that. I supposed anytime a flash animation with ‘Ascend’ in it comes about I should prepare myself.

I remember seeing this for the first time and thinking there’s no way Dave’s bro is going to use a sword on him, it’s gonna be a jape, some ironic shit, or a battle of personalities like Rose and John had encountered so far. The topic of Dave’s bro being a domestic abuser was a hot topic while I read the comic. I’m not very involved in the community today, but back then there was a startling large percentage of the fandom excusing bro for his actions for the most insane reasons. This was well before Dirk was introduced. This was before anyone had an attachment to Dirk and/or his alternate versions, before we knew anything that could *potentially* be redeeming. Even now that HS is finished it’s inexcusable to abuse someone you’re the legal guardian of to such a degree as Dave is fucked up, back then I wonder if the people defending him were kids who saw their own family dynamic reflected and were desperately normalizing it just like Dave. That’s a dark thought, but looking back as an adult it’s the first conclusion I can rationally make.

Sometimes a guardian “doing their best” is still not acceptable. That’s enough of that for now.

Improving as an Illustrator and Professional 1 - Littlest Pet Shop

In this post, I want to go over how I completed my first commission for a paying client.

To start, I had to identify an online space to promote my work. I did a lot of research into this topic and found many online spaces for artists to promote themselves. Fiverr.com was one of the most recommended; however, I found that this space and similar sites were very competitive, and a lot of the work being advertised was for commercial ventures such as branding, or animations.

I wanted to target a very specific audience, more specifically Littlest Pet Shop fans. I think if I were to use such a large platform like Fiverr, I would struggle to capture this audience. Additionally, Fiverr charges a 20% to each of their creators, and this frankly felt extortionate to me.

So instead, I thought I would use a more comfortable/informal method. I went onto Facebook and I entered Littlest Pet Shop fan groups. These fan groups had around 12000 members each. This is, of course, a far smaller clientele than that of fiverr.com. However, I believe this audience is far more likely to want a commission in this art style, due to it conforming to their niche hobby. 

I delivered my advertisement in an informal way. Instead of saying “I do commissions, direct message me.”, I said that I had drawn myself and my boyfriend in the Littlest Pet Shop style, and that I could potentially do commissions if anybody wanted one.

I think this makes me seem more approachable. If I had made a post in the style of the former example, people would likely see it as more of an advertisement than a casual post. Of course, it is an advertisement for all intents and purposes, but people do not like being advertised to. When advertisements are obvious, people are less likely to buy into a product. Quickframe suggests a workaround for this: “if you want to overcome your audience’s frustration of only seeing irrelevant ads, you’ll need to speak directly to your customers”, and this confirms that my strategy is the correct one.

After making my post, I waited a few hours and received very little attention. I expected this, as I had not promoted myself in these spaces before and did not know their activity levels. Luckily, after a day, I received a comment from somebody asking if they could DM me about wanting a commission.

The commenter DM’d me and requested an illustration of one of her friend's pet dog.

I price my commission at £15. This is low. But because the art style was so simple for me, it was actually above minimum wage. I also did not want to charge too much, just in case it would turn away my only potential client.

As I had identified when completing the drawings of me and Harry, Littlest Pet Shop has strong brand guidelines and design features that they use across each design. One of these is the unique eye-shines that portray the personality of each pet. I sent a chart documenting all of these styles to my client and asked them which they would like for the prospective drawing.

I think that this added more to the customization, and made her feel more involved in the process.

I also showed her the reference image I would be tracing from and made her aware that I would be heavily referencing said image. This also played a part in the low price, as I did not feel comfortable charging for traced work.

She asked if she could pay half up front and half after I said this was more than okay. However, if she were to use PayPal, she would have to pay an additional fee to cover the goods and services charge. She was happy with this, and paid me what was due. I then provided her with the complete image; This image had a watermark, and half of it was in black and white. This was so that she could approve the drawing or request changes, without being able to take it without paying the second instalment.

I think this is something that I will carry forward, because I think even if somebody seems nice, many will take the opportunity to pay as little as possible. She was very agreeable, and paid. I sent her the final drawing.

Overall, this was a really simple and quick experience and I really enjoyed doing it. I would like to do this again, and as such advertised once more in the Facebook group after this. I did not manage to attract any more buyers. I don't blame myself for this, instead I think it is due to the niche subject of my artwork.

If I were to do this again, I think I would either identify a less niche target audience, or place more effort and time into advertising myself. However, I did like using the Facebook platform, as I did not have to pay any percentages to the hosting website as I would have had if I were on Fiverr.

Christians need to accept the fact that the modern Christian church is extremely susceptible to charlatans and frauds.

If you're the kind of person who learns how to tell people what they want to hear, a great way to make money off it is to become a pastor.

And it's not always people setting out to be a bad-faith faith-leader. Charismatic churches often put a lot of effort into seeking miracles, evangelical churches put a lot of emphasis on getting more converts. A pastor or leadership body with good intentions can turn a blind eye or let a few falsehoods slide if it seems to advance the measures for those goals.

And of course if your church starts getting successful and your salary starts going up you may be tempted to protect and increase your new quality of life over faithful leadership.

This could be a largely subconscious thing too. Pastors may be in a state of denial and believe just as much as their church body that they are in the right.

When the Bible talks about false prophets and discerning them by their fruit, yeah sure there may be some willfully bad actors. But a lot of them are probably people who started out for the right reasons then became corrupted by the power, the money, or the dream of the church.
