Something that makes Farscape feel so bonkers (in a good way) is how they take an idea and just keep extrapolating from that to get every bit of story and characterization out of it they can.
Like, take Moya - a living ship. They could have just left it at, like, Moya occasionally having opinions that differ from the crews. But instead they take it much further...okay so if she's alive, then her species must reproduce. How do they do that? What happens when a leviathan is pregnant? What does giving birth look like? Are they a peaceful species or a violent one? What does it mean for a leviathan's identity if they are born with weapons? Do they have deities? If so, what are they like? What happens to leviathans as they age? How about when they die?
So on and so forth.
Or take the translator microbes. It'd be too easy to have translator microbes literally translate everything all the time and be forgotten after the first episode. But instead the show calls back to them occasionally. There's the old Luxon language that the microbes don't know. There's Sikozu, who can't use translator microbes.
It's worldbuilding, yes...but only through the lens of the experiences of the characters on screen. So it doesn't feel like lore-dumping. And yet everything keeps building off of what came before. So it feels grounded and bonkers at the same time.
Anyway I really like this show.

[start i.d.: a colored sketch drawing of kristen applebees kneeling on the floor in her room. her hands are rested in her lap, and she looks skyward expectantly. she wears a heavy jacket and jeans, and the drawing is done in muted cool colors. end i.d.]

ok so, there's this (prob/most likely dead dove) het h manga I read a while ago (tragic isekai reincarnation as the villaness) that has big binggeqiu vibes and I keep trying to adapt it into a gay au so I'm just gonna ramble for a bit here
sy got transmigrated into an otome game as sqq the villan who is engaged to lbh, the powerful prince of the country.
sqq character is a wealthy mage with low level powers that lives in a village, and he goes to a school in main city to learn to control them. but sy has other plans. while playing watching his sister play the game, he found an npc character (sj) that had a past with sqq but never got looked into, so that's the first thing he wants to do in this new life of his
sy ADORES lbh, his favorite character and all but HE'S NOT GAY, so he tells his parents to send a letter to dissolve the engagement before going back to his village. he founds sj and discovers their secret shared past (idk I'm gonna think about it) and promises to come back to talk more
when sqq goes back to school, everyone notices that he changed and starts gaining fans. lbh is curious bc EVERYONE wants him, he's fucked with a long list of ppl and someone rejecting him is NEW and EXCITING so he looks for sqq to talk about it
sy decides to tell a small lie and say that he already loves someone else from his own village and lbh is curious but always polite, bc that's the mask he's always had. but when he's about to ask more, the bell for next class rings and lbh is like "oww, wish we could talk more about this. but it's not like I could burn the whole school down so I could avoid responsibilities lol"
and sy is like "yeah that checks out" and lbh asks him what does he mean??
sy says "oh shit, I didn't mean to say it outloud hahaha... I just said that uh, you look like you would burn a place down just bc it's inconvenient for you?"
and lbh is FLOORED bc you see, when he was little and his powers manifested, they were too strong and he ended up killing a bunch of ppl accidentally, and his servants were like "welp, accidents happened, my lord! dw!!" and literally no one ever talked about it
and that was too much for smol lbh. could he get away with that just bc he was the prince?? so he did a couple of experiments, he grabbed random ppl and tortured them or outright killed them infront of his servants and everyone just let it slipped, saying that it was nothing my lord, we didn't see anything
so lbh always felt empty bc everyone saw him as the beautiful perfect prince that never did anything wrong, so he felt that he was surrounded by mindless puppets, all bowing to him.
BUT THEN sqq changed and SAW HIM as he really was. a psychopath that could burn a whole place down just because he felt like it
so ofc he kidnaps sqq and fucks him into submission, saying that they belong together, and when sqq asks him to let him go back to his village lbh replies "if your village is all you think about, I'll have to get rid of it"
AND HE DOES!
so sqq doesn't have other option than to marry lbh
this is ✨ problematic ✨

"Do you think anyone's going to remember us? Who remembers those who were never born, yet live anyway?"
The Employees by Olga Ravn
This was a very interesting book to read. IT is about a spaceship in the 22nd centruy called the Six-Thousand Ship with a mixed crew of humans and humanoid robots. In this time, Earth is a relic of the past and only a few of the crewmates have vague memories of the planet. They have picked up a few strange, if not interesting, objects from a new planet and start to become weirdly attached to them. It is written in the style of recorded logs from the crew expressing their thoughts and feelings about each other and these strange artifacts.
I thoroughly enjoyed the sytle that the story was presented in and being able to connect with the characters in a more personal aspect. Granted, the recordings are not all in order, but I think they come from the different crew members. It is certainly an interesting take on future workplaces; especially if we are to move out to space and float along the stars.
The only downside to this story is the inconspicuous telling and knowing whose voice belongs to which character. There are tiny details of the writing or how they approach situations where the reader could connect a few of the recordings, but outside of that, there are few tells of how many characters are represented in this story. I think it would be a good re-read if the story were intriguing to the reader and there may be other hints that foreshadow the coming events or hidden 'eggs' throughout the story.

Books to TV Shows
It’s another Wednesday and right before another Wheel of Time episode comes out. Lately new shows seem to be all about the book adaptations. Personally, I’m a big fan of the closer to the book the better. My mortal flaw if you will. The movie version of Eragon is still banned by parents. Wheel of Time is a struggle some episodes honestly but I love what they’re doing independent of the books.…

i think about how gorgug saw his parents' family abandon the thistlesprings when they adopted him in the nightmare forest all the time.
like imagine being 16 and never really fitting in anyway and think people don't like you because you're big and angry and shy. and then you learn that in a way your biggest fears were realized. that even though its not your fault because you were a baby, you don't have extended family because they were worried you would murder them.
I think about this all the time as well, that the very thing that Gorgug's upset about not being able to bond with his family over is the reason his extended family aren't in his life. Not only that, but even after this, the closest they felt to "rage" was dropping a chisel. It could just be they didn't want to tell Gorgug about what their family had said (or rather Brennan hadn't thought of that scenario yet) but it kinda solidifies the idea that that Thistlesprings can't feel anger, and Gorgug was already at a disadvantage in the family for having an emotion they're incapable of feeling.
It also seems to be sort of a running theme of Gorgug hurting his loved ones (Adaine's vision of him in sy, the whack a gnome game in fy that looked like his parents) but he's never actually hurt them, more like he's capable of it, and he's already seen as different for being "capable" of something he's never had any intentions of doing

hey to a gorgug liker what do you think about his nightmare section from sophomore year? cause I feel like the horror there is less “ah my grandparents were racist” and more “fuck am I being a stereotype? are the people who hate me right about me?” cause wrt to his having to modulate between barbarian and artificer in fhjy it’s like. idk
oh boy do I have thoughts
Tbh, I had zero recollection of the racism stuff until reading this. It was just SO MINOR. His trial in the forest felt really lackluster to me. I feel like everyone else's really dug into an issue at the core of their character and his felt more like "everyone is getting a trial, what do we do for gorgug?" And idk if that was just a bad delivery/call on Brennan's part or if it could have been helped by Zac engaging more in it but it just. Didn't feel like anything. It was a lot more about the dice than the horror of the claustrophobia and the bugs and you've never fit in anywhere you live to make yourself smaller wherever you go you're just the loser who hits hard. Like yeah I guess there was an overarching theme of Gorgug gaining confidence in himself but it was done very poorly imo.
And I think his trial in the forest was wrong for putting such an emphasis on his intelligence. I think that would have been much better suited in fy, back when he was still being heavily bullied, but beyond that it felt like a quick and easy thing for them to grab. Yes, he had insecurities about his intelligence with all the complications with Zelda. But, to me, the focus of fhsy was his HEART. It put a spotlight on how his social circle has grown, and his bully is his friend now, and he's not alone anymore. His interactions with Ayda, the friendship book, trying to help Fabian, I believe in you spring break, it's Gorgug keep going. I made a post earlier in the season (including a great addition by another user) that I think articulates that emphasis on his emotional intelligence very well.
Fhjy HOWEVER. I think it's doing everything that sy failed at. It's giving him space to have an inner conflict. It's addressing lots of little issues and conflicts he's had over the campaign and combining them into one coherent piece. Like, guy was in a relationship pretty much all of fy, and then dealt with the fallout in sy, but I don't think we've EVER seen as much quality relationship development with Gorgug as we have in jy. He and Fig spent an entire summer together trapped in a tour bus and no season has indicated that bond and friendship more than this one. He and Riz have found something to bond over, meanwhile in previous seasons there was pretty much zero one-on-one personal interaction between them. Fabian expressed sadness over Gorgug leaving the Owlbears, because it was the only thing they had that was just for them to hang out and be friends.
Just with that, we're already doing leagues more with Gorgug's character than we ever have. And I haven't even STARTED on his barbificier journey, oh dear god lmao.
Gonna preface this bit with a post I made before the season even started. It was about Zac's steady improvement in his performances with every PC, and how I was predicting that it was gonna culminate into a Gorgug that does him the justice he deserves. It was initially supposed to be a criticism, but I got a little lost in the sauce of loving my boy lol. Still very relevant to the topic of this ask!
God, where do I START?? Addressing his relationship with rage? I'll be honest, I didn't think that would ever be used as a character arc. And I'm not even sure why I've felt that way. I just didn't think... I didn't think about how he might've had a dislike for his own rage. Like, the WAY he rages isn't bad by any means, but I don't think it ever crossed my mind how actually harmful his lessons to sing to combat rage were. No, I did not like the way Porter went about teaching him (a bit too unsupportive of his capabilities and reminiscent of shitty teachers for my liking). But his point about EMBRACING anger; that rage is not bad and does not— should not— need to be stifled. THAAAAT. That opened up such an interesting dialogue for Gorgug.
I do appreciate the beginnings of Gorgug's interest in artificing in fhsy. I think the crumbs of it back then did a great job of leading into his larger commitment to multiclassing. And I think what he's been doing with it this season is exactly what was lacking in his section of the nightmare forest. His trial was a puzzle, based entirely on die rolls, where his solution after failing even when he's assisted by the enemy is to essentially give up. I understand that facing their fears was the whole point of the trials, but his section came off as incredibly anticlimactic and unfulfilling. Just the fact that it was a trial based on stat numbers more than the development of the character itself.
Where junior year succeeds in actually showcasing his intelligence and the evolution of the worth he holds in himself is with the hands-on approach it takes. Yes, the academic rolls are still dice and stats, but there's a physical manifestation that wasn't there before. Gorgug is smart when it comes to getting his hands dirty. It is in the practical applications of his skills that his brand of intelligence shines the most.
And while, once again, I did not LIKE Porter's heavy resistance to multiclassing....I have to admit that I don't think Gorgug would have had such a boost in confidence without that struggle. Even if my boy had trouble expressing it to Porter verbally, HE STOOD UP FOR HIMSELF. Instead of simply rolling over and agreeing that he wasn't built for a technical class and it was stupid to try– he was DEFIANT.
The kid who said "I'm a dumbass. Eat me you stupid bug." took on FOUR CLASSES. Three school years worth of artificer simultaneously. AND stayed with the Owlbears. AND went along on party missions to help Kristen's candidacy. AND was always on deck to help the party with the overarching plotline.
AND HE ACED IT!!! THE FIRST BARBIFICER THAT THE AGUEFORT ADVENTURING ACADEMY HAS EVER SEEN!!!!! He is paving the way for every unprecedented multiclass that follows.
Just in comparison to who he was in the previous season, the amount of drive and self-worth he's gained is astounding. In my eyes, it's done more than enough to makeup for the way his development fell flat in sophomore year.
i hope this fulfilled the ask in the way you were hoping! i told you i'd get carried away lmao. writing a bunch about any of zac's characters is always such a joy. gorgug had always been my favorite of the bad kids but i always found myself wishing he went deeper, y'know? and now it's real. my precious anxious boy has been handled so well. and watching zac's growth as a performer has been such a blast.
thanks for the ask! :D

walk with me bird,,, thinking about kristen's lack of self preservation especially in sophmore year- she does crazy shit again and again and it is funny but like. when you actually look at it, its like this elaborate performance. so much going on in kristen's brain, losing her family, (we know she's clearly still thinking about it with the start of sy being her returning to her brothers) losing her religion and then recreating it and still feeling lost.
all her life being full and told that this is the thing- that will protect you as long as you are good so kristen is good and then realizes oh. i was meant for something terrible actually, my church who vowed to protect me is actually trying to make me a hellmouth. like oh. great well i dont feel safe in that anymore, im always arguing with my parents because even they are still polluted with their religion but she lets it go she tries to find something else. and then she ends fy with her new religion and immediately doesnt like it, over the summer it still doesnt click and she changes it again, she puts her faith or even lack of it at the forefront as she does these insane choices, like a leap of faith. like oh someone has got to save me if i do this- surely someone will. (also pushing my agenda of kristen's faith eventually forming into believing in her friends bc they are the ones who always save her not the gods even though i do love cass)
like ally talking about chaos not being cute anymore really makes me think of all this- because it's like kristen being like oh well if it goes wrong than at least it's some sort of relief from this pressure of being something and at least im not plagued with thinking about not being good enough for my own parents. like her being so not aggressive but trying to counter sandralynn too- like not wanting to view her as a parental figure but as a person. kristen like almost tries to parent her in a way which sounds weird but its very like she can't turn it off in her head because she's been raised with expectation so she does feel on the same level as adults when in reality she is not but kristen believes like oh i can solve this here maybe u shouldnt be doing this thing in her relationship. i think part of it is kristen not wanting to see a parent become better and then have to wonder why her's didn't. like was she not enough for them to want to me better. it's so complex i adore kristen's character and it kinda surprises me how often she becomes very 2d in the fandom but alas, many thoughts about her
i am absolutely walking with you. i love what your talking about with her dynamic with sandra lynn (which. i will always be crazy about her and sandra lynn they are just both so intersting in thier relationships) but yeah it makes a lot of sense that she doesn't know how to properly interact with her if you think about the amount of pressure she has been given to be a spiritual leader through church or if you hc her as a parentified older sister to her little brothers (which i do personally) so she's not thinking about her interaction with sandra lynn as like, a regular adult cuz she hasn't really had those interactions before, especially when it comes to an adult not trusting her.
and i think that's why she just feels so insane in sophmore year, jsut like, she's going from something super rigid to something where it feels like she can do anything and that's fucking scary. like she has a place to stay but she doesn't really have any parents to answer to, she has a god but she has so much doubt it doesn't feel reliable, all she really has as stability is her friends and her girlfriend, and i feel like she is just incredibly reckless cuz like, she's doing better but its almost like she has nothing to lose? but she does. and she did, and i think that was what beardsley was saying about the chaos not being cute anymore, like kristen was acting like she was invinvible at times and that not only got her hurt, but also those around her, and im excited to see how she grows from that.
