Sea Otter Heaven, Morro Bay (No. 6)
Although the southern sea otter's range has continuously expanded from the remnant population of about 50 individuals in Big Sur since protection in 1911, from 2007 to 2010, the otter population and its range contracted and since 2010 has made little progress. As of spring 2010, the northern boundary had moved from about Tunitas Creek to a point 2 kilometres (1.2 mi) southeast of Pigeon Point, and the southern boundary has moved along the Gaviota Coast from approximately Coal Oil Point to Gaviota State Park. A toxin called microcystin, produced by a type of cyanobacteria (Microcystis), seems to be concentrated in the shellfish the otters eat, poisoning them. Cyanobacteria are found in stagnant water enriched with nitrogen and phosphorus from septic tank and agricultural fertilizer runoff, and may be flushed into the ocean when streamflows are high in the rainy season. A record number of sea otter carcasses were found on California's coastline in 2010, with increased shark attacks an increasing component of the mortality. Great white sharks do not consume relatively fat-poor sea otters but shark-bitten carcasses have increased from 8% in the 1980s to 15% in the 1990s and to 30% in 2010 and 2011.

We return to the series where I discuss the origin of every non-fish aquatic Pokémon. This time I’ll be covering generation IV, which has some of my favorite designs out of the whole franchise. As before I’m saving starters and legendaries/mythicals for their own posts and I covered all fish Pokémon in their own series of posts. To see previous parts of this series see gen I part 1, gen I part 2, gen II, and gen III. To see the fish of Sinnoh, see here. To see the fish Pokémon series see here.
We begin with what is undeniably the most popular and influential Pokémon line in the history of the franchise: the Bidoof line. Never before has there been a beast of such majesty and power, an angelic presence from the heavens. Mere mortals are not worthy to gaze upon Bidoof. Technically only Bibarel is aquatic, but to not include Bidoof would be the greatest of heresies. They’re both rodents (the chaddest of mammals) with Bidoof most likely being based on a groundhog or mountain beaver. Mountain beavers resemble tailless beavers but are not closely related and don’t live in water.
Tumblr media
(image: a mountain beaver)
If you are foolish enough to dilute Bidoof’s purity by evolving it to Bibarel, it will be based on a beaver.
Tumblr media
(image: a North American beaver)
These amphibious rodents are famous for building dams by chewing through small trees and assembling the trees and branches in structures that block waterways. Beaver dams can turn a stream into a full wetland by blocking the flow and they are very important to the wetland ecology of their habitats. The dams serve as homes for the beavers and is where they keep their young.
Tumblr media
(image: a cross-section of a beaver dam. source)
Juveniles will stay in the dam until they are mature enough to fend for themselves. Bidoof is likely a juvenile that is not old enough to swim yet and must rely on its parents to thrive in wetland habitats. There are two species, the North American beaver and the Eurasian beaver. The Eurasian beaver was almost hunted to extinction for its fur, but has been successfully reintroduced to quite of a bit of its historical range. Bibarel might be based on the Eurasian beaver as it is native to, and has been reintroduced to, China and Sinnoh has quite a few references to China. Also of note, the male Bibarel has two extra balls on the base of its tail. Male rodents are notorious for having large testicles. Do with that information what you will.
Moving on from Bidoof will never be easy, but it is necessary. We now turn to the moist mustelids of the Buizel line. They are based on otters, particularly river otters due to their freshwater habitat.
Tumblr media
(image: a eurasian otter)
Even more specifically, they may be based on the Japanese otter, a river otter native to Japan that was last seen in the 1970s and officially declared extinct in 2012. Despite being primarily depicted as a freshwater species, their category name is the “sea weasel Pokémon”, indicating that they are also based on marine otters, the most famous of which being the sea otter of the north Atlantic. Otters and weasels are both members of the family Mustelidae, with their subfamilies being sister groups. There are weasels that are partially or even primarily aquatic, though they as a group are more terrestrial.
Tumblr media
(image: a mink going for a swim. Minks are a subset of weasels)
The Buizel line also draws from floatation devices like inner tubes, water wings, and life vests, with the yellow parts of their bodies being inflatable and buoyant and Floatzel being said to rescue drowning victims.
The Shellos line is without exaggeration one of my favorite lines in the franchise due to the cool biological references they have. They are based on nudibranchs, an order of marine gastropods commonly called sea slugs (though some non-nudibranchs are also called sea slugs). Many nudibranchs are very colorful, which inspired the pink and blue coloration of the Shellos lines.
Tumblr media
(image: it's a nudibranch, dudeibranch)
Nudibranchs can be divided into dorids and aeolids based on their breathing apparatuses. Shellos and Gastrodon are aeolids, who have tendril or fronds like growths called cerata that help them breathe. The head tendrils of east sea Shellos and both Gastrodons and the crown-like organ of west sea shellos are based on cerata, as are the various lumps and fin-like structures found on all of them. A few species of nudibranch have moved their cerata to a more fin or wing-like position, which may explain why east sea shellos appears to have wings. The “wings” could also be based on sea hares, another group of sea slugs, some species of which have developed wing-like structures that allow them to swim.
Tumblr media
(Image: a flying sea hare)
Sea hares are named for their large rod-like scent organs called rhinopores found in most sea slugs, which may be another inspiration for the head tentacles of Gastrodon. Shelos and Gastrodon can learn some poison-type moves depending on generation and this has a few bases. Many nudibranchs have venomous or poisonous cerata. Often this is a result of eating venomous hydrozoans like anemones and sequestering their stinging cells in the cerata. The bright colors of some nudibranchs may be the result of  aposematic coloration, where a species is brightly colored as a warning to potential predators that they are poisonous. The line releases a purplish chemical when stressed, which likely references sea hares again. They can release a colorful, toxic ink into the water as a defense mechanism.
Tumblr media
(image: a California sea hare at a rave releasing ink)
The coolest trait of the Shellos line in my opinion is the fact that there are two distinct populations, east sea and west sea, that have different colors and body structures. This is due to the process of allopatric speciation. This is the process where a species is split into two or more distinct populations by a geographical barrier. Once they are isolated, the populations will begin developing distinct traits due to evolution and them no longer being able to interbreed. Over a long enough time period, the populations can grow so different from each other that they can no longer breed and will be considered different species.
Tumblr media
(image: a diagram of how allopatric speciation works. source)
The two Shellos and Gastrodon populations in Sinnoh were separated by the Sinnoh mountain range, causing the process of allopatric speciation to begin. The two populations can still breed, suggesting that they have not been separated long enough to become two distinct species and may be more accurately described as subspecies or a superspecies, but breeding in Pokémon is nothing like real life reproduction so that may not be the case. Most other regions use only one Shellos population and in Paldea they may be isolated by the connection to Kalos. A real-life example of allopatric speciation can be seen in the two species of chimpanzee: troglodytes and bonobos. The two shared a common ancestor a few million years ago but that ancestor’s range was cut in two by the Congo River. Since chimpanzees are very poor swimmers, the two populations were isolated from each other and developed into two species. Allopatric speciation likely plays a part in how some regional variants developed, but this on on a case-by case basis and is rarely the only factor.
This is the shortest of these series and Gen V will hopefully be out soon.  See you next time for when I talk about my first generation of the games.

In the vast ocean of life, you glide, An otter seeking love so pure, Let the currents carry you forward, As you seek the creature, one to be your amour.
Through waves and tides, don't lose hope, Each ripple molds you into who you are, Stronger and wiser, never surrender, Until you reach your shining star.
Keep your keen eyes searching wide, On land or sea, both near and far, True love awaits, swimming steadily, Just beyond where the river spar.
Patience is key, my dear otter friend, Never rush the natural flow, For love arrives at its own pace, Guided by forces we may not know.
Embrace the ebb and tide of fate, Trust in yourself and the heavens' plan, Your soulmate will emerge soon enough, Playfully dancing across the sand.
So hold fast to this promise true, Believe in the magic of the deep blue, Together forever, paw in paw, Two souls bound in love so true and through.
がんばって♥
This is so sweet! Thank you so much for this! ❤️❤️❤️

Rattling the serrated blade inside the freshly formed slit, as if in a ravenous attempt to crack open a stubborn oyster and get at the succulent meat beyond the shell like a starved sea otter. Only does she falter when the inbuilt audio system, which had provided the back-up beats to many a jam session, proceeds to spit the snarling din of disordered files in her face. Amidst the clamor of fractured sound-bytes her vocals stand out starkly...this absolute freak must've cracked the internal storage unit. What a sicko. The blood seethes in her veins, at the thought of some desperate posturer nosing through Adam's private data. "RAAAAAAAAAGGGGHHH BLEED, YOU FILTH!!!" Reeling her head back in preparation to butt the knife through every layer of glass, flesh and bone separating it from the off switch nestled somewhere inside the dome, but she is stopped short. A squawk tears itself free of her lungs when the demon whips his upper body backwards, slinging her up and over his head like a raging bull. She lands with a thud atop the counter, pinning an awkwardly folded wing between her back and the blackwood, which results in a disconcerting crack of a sound, stemming from somewhere within the feathered appendage. Ouch! If she is at all deterred it is only for the moment it takes her to get her bearings and evade being gored by those Dagger-esque horns. She'd left the knife lodged in the display, so she's quick to swing an arm behind the bar and make a grab for the first object she can find, which happens to be a bucket full of ice. Not exactly an ideal weapon but she slams that shit, full force, over the back of his head never the less, scattering the cubes and frigid water all across the floor. An opportunity to take him down to the ground if she can get him to slip in the mess she'd just made, she draws her knees in close to her chest, grasping the counter's edge for extra leverage, and bunny kicks him in the side with all the staggering power of a roided up kangaroo.
The fact that she was trying to screw the knife's edge past the punctured glass shell and into his skull was not lost on the first man who became very distinctly aware of the scrape of metal against the flesh beneath the hardy helmet's shell. What exactly did an exorcist have to gain from coming down outside of extermination and tearing his head off? There was no telling...no telling what heaven had gotten up to in his absence. Surely they all thought him dead or else Lute and the others...they would have come back for him, right? But here was one of his own flock determined to dive a blade between his eyes. Which begged the question...did they know all along? That he was down here? And was this their confirmation that he was not only worth coming back for, but better off wiped clean of their record before he could cause too many issues to divine reputation down in hell?
Such thoughts are enough in the ways of fuel to fire him up into a raging display worthy of cracking the delicate intricacies of a monochrome-feathered wing trapped under his downward thrashes as he behaved more like a bull in a china shop than an angel with clipped wings at the bar. He would have kept jackhammering his horns down upon her too until he'd smashed her to a gorey pulp on the counter if it wasn't for how viciously she connected the bucket to the back of his helmet, leaving an additional ringing inside his skull as he snarled and staggered back a stunned step from his attempted brutalization. The ice caught suddenly underfoot causes him to slip just a jerk of a step, but he catches the side of the counter with a harsh grip of talons that scratch the black wooded surface. It's a short lived folly though when a well-timed kick slams into his flank and knocks him back a few sliding feet that might have destroyed the wall behind them with his momentum and launch speed had he not curled over to dig vicious nails into the floor, thus coming to a scraping stop on all fours like the animal she seemed to think she was butchering.
"All right-...I'm fucking DONE with this!" The rumble of a growl in his chest turned snarl helped him straighten back up as well as a burst of light in front of his chest that helped lay the image of a golden axe strapped across his chest in its usual position for every band session he'd issue to his flock in the past. With the currents of the chords, he was able to control the movements of his girls at times when they needed a slight nudging back into place to keep their formation more fuck-shit-up friendly, and he was absolutely prepared to correct this one's before she got too ahead of herself thinking she could waltz up and leave with his head in one soundless transaction. Without missing a beat of his own, he slammed the start of a particularly booming riff aimed at knocking the wind into her wings hard enough to send her backwards again if she wasn't careful about keeping those sails of the shoulder tucked against his perfect disaster of a storm.
"COME AND GET ME THEN, YOU STUPID BITCH-" He demanded, striking down upon the strings with the radiant light of his resolve much less bright than usual- but still a force of bass to be reckoned with when cranked up enough and aimed.

Lí Ban
Lí Ban or Liban' (from Old Irish lí 'beauty', and ban 'of women', hence 'paragon of women'), in the legend surrounding the formation of Lough Neagh, was a woman turned mermaid who inhabited the area before the great lake gushed up on dry land. Her family was drowned, but she survived in an underwater chamber in the lake for a year, after which she was transformed into a being who was half-human, half-salmon.
In her mermaid form, she was spotted by the ship carrying a messenger sent by St. Comgall to Rome. She promised to meet at the seaport inlet of Inbhear nOllarbha (Larne Lough) in Ireland after one year, and was captured in a fishnet. There she was baptised by Comgall, and given the Christened name Muirgein ("sea-born") or Muirgeilt ("sea-wander). She appears canonised as St. Muirgen in genealogies of Irish saints, her feast day assigned to 27 January.
Tumblr media
The mermaid figure may ultimately derive from another Lí Ban, Sister of Fand, in Irish mythology.
Liban, a mermaid (muirgelt) who was the daughter of Eochaid, was captured in the year 558 A.D. according to the Annals of the Four Masters, compiled the 17th century. Her capture is also given brief notice under the year 571 in the Annals of Ulster.
The Annals of the Four Masters adds that Liban was captured on the strand of "Ollarbha" (River Larne, or Inver River in Larne), in the net of a fisherman for St. Comgall of Bangor. An account of Liban's life story is found in the tale Aided Echach maic Maireda (Death of Eochaid son of Mairid), preserved in the 12th century Lebor na hUidre ("Book of the Dun Cow"). The tale has been translated by P. W. Joyce and by Standish Hayes O'Grady (1892).
According to this old tale, Liban turned into a mermaid when a spring burst under her house to form Lough Neagh (Old Irish: Loch nEchach), named after Liban's father Eochaid mac Mairidh[c] who was drowned by the gushing water. But Liban survived in an underwater chamber in the lake for one year, after which she turned into mermaid form, half human and half salmon. Together with her lapdog which assumed the form of an otter, the mermaid was free to roam the seas for 300 years, while maintaining her dwelling under the same Lough. During the time of St. Comgall, her angelic singing causes her to be discovered by a passing boat (coracle), and she agreed to come ashore. The mermaid was then baptised Muirgen ("sea-born"), but died immediately and ascended to heaven. She had forfeited another 300 years of longevity for a Christian soul.
Liban's capturer, named Béoán son of Innli was not just a "fisherman" according to the tale, but a member of the monastery of Tech Dabeoc (House of St. Dabeoc in County Donegal), and was on a mission to Rome sent by St. Comgall when he encountered Liban. Liban agrees to be buried in his monastery, but later on, a dispute arises over the right to her burial between him and St. Comgall, and the owner of the net. This was settled by divine judgment, as two oxen hitched to her chariot carried Liban to the monastery of Dabeoc.

Think of the last dream you had. What was it about? I don’t remember. I rarely remember my dreams.  What stresses you out? Currently, my health is my biggest stressor.  What's one song that you can listen to that can make you fall asleep? There isn’t a song, but ASMR can help.  Do you tend to trip over air often? I tend to bump into things or hit my hand or elbow on something.  Have you ever gone on a cruise? No.
Have you ever watched the sunrise? Yes. What about the sunset? Yes. Name a band that you think is beyond overrated: *shrug* When was the last time it snowed in your area? It doesn’t snow here.  Summer or Winter? Why? Winter, hands down. I don’t do well with the heat and it gets miserably hot here. Our summers also feel like they go on forever. We’re in mid October and it’s still been in the 90s.  Spring or Autumn? Why? Autumn. I love the weather, the holidays, the smells, the colors, and just the coziness.  What season were you born in? Ugh, in the summer. Do you like to play in the rain? No. I love when it rains, though.  Do you think that by doing so, you may catch a cold? It’s possible.  Who is the last person you said goodbye to? My brother yesterday when he went to work. What are you currently sitting on right now? My bed. Are you listening to music? No. Is there anyone you know who always looks like a smug bastard? No. Who can you not live without? My mom. What's your favorite instrument? The piano and guitar.  Do you have anything planned for your next birthday? My birthday isn’t until July, I have plenty of time to figure something out. I do hope to do something fun since this year I had to spend it in the hospital.  How tall are you? About 5′4.  Do you wish to be any taller or shorter? I wish I was taller.  Have you ever submitted anything to Fmylife.com? No.  Are you currently working on finishing a book? No. Do you have a blog? If so, care to leave a link to it? You’re lookin’ at it.  Is your hair naturally curly, straight or in-between? It’s wavy.  What's your favorite sea creature? Otters and sea lions are cute.  What's your favorite acoustic song? The acoustic version of Everlong by Foo Fighters.  Do you know anyone that's pregnant? Yes. Top bunk or bottom bunk? Bottom cause I wouldn’t be able to get up and down on my own.  What's your favorite Pokmon? Jigglypuff.  What's your favorite font? Verdana and Tahoma.  What happens when a sword that can pierce anything tries to pierce a shield that cannot be pierced? Nothing?
What's your favorite riddle? Why is a raven like a writing desk? Do you use the dish washer or prefer washing dishes by hand? We rinse them off before putting them in the dishwasher.  Have you ever been inside a castle? No. Do you know anyone who backwashes? DD: Everyone does. I don’t share drinks with anyone, so it’s not an issue for me.  What do you think happens after we pass? I believe in heaven and hell.  ^ Is it different from what you'd like to happen? No. How do you feel about people self-diagnosing themselves with disorders? I mean, you can research a disorder and identify with one, but you should see a doctor to be sure. You could end up thinking you have something that you don’t and possibly do something harmful or misdiagnose and have something go left untreated.  It can be helpful for you to research beforehand, though, so you can take your information to your doctor and think about what questions you may have. Also helpful to know what symptoms you may be experiencing.  Tell me a random fact. Around 430 this morning I ate a Reese’s. lol. Name one unusual habit that you have. I break apart my food when eating. Like, if I’m eating pizza I tear pieces off to eat instead of just biting it.  Did today treat you well? It’s only 6:11AM, but I’ve been up since like 4 so that sucks.  Do you enjoy calling out trolls/people who shouldn't be on the interbutts? No. What would you say if I said that I love you? Uh, you don’t even know me.  Let's get married either way? No.

FFXIV Write - Prompt #4 - Free Pick (”Recite”)

Tumblr media Tumblr media
*Original poem, “Amoretti LXXV: One Day I Wrote her Name” by Edmund Spenser (1552-1599)*
“You may kiss me whenever and wherever you want,” Niamh had promised, laughing, “Would you like me to write it down for you?”
And Galvjn had looked like he might appreciate it, even as he had struck back with the stinger, “Is there a rule on how long you must wait before repeating? I know how Sharlayans love their rules."
He wasn’t wrong about her. She bundled herself up in rules and decorum and manners and pretended that it was her idea, that it was comfortable to be restricted in such a way. And it was, to some degree. And there was a certain skill that had to be respected in learning to express yourself despite the confines society put on you.
There could be great beauty in order and rules. For Niamh, the voracious reader, poetry immediately sprang to mind. A creative work born from twisting language and its conventions to suit the speaker’s raw emotions and needs.
She recalled her classes on recitals and presentations–her public speaking lessons. Required courses for anyone anticipating forum work, or needing to request funding in their future. Her classmates had dreaded the hours spent with her elocution and rhetoric professor, but Niamh had taken to it like an otter to the sea, like a duck to water. She’d stood before her peers, in her element, and recited poetry and it was fun.
“One day I wrote her name upon the strand, But came the waves and washed it away:”
Her final recitation surfaced in her memory, unbidden as her subconscious mind made connections between her past and her present.
“Again I wrote it with a second hand, But came the tide, and made my pains his prey.”
Niamh took to her writing desk, practicing her penmanship for a moment before retrieving her good rolanberry inks and a small rectangle of thick, cured vellum.
“"Vain man," said she, "that dost in vain assay, A mortal thing so to immortalize;”
“As of the third sun of the fifth astral moon, under the guidance and blessing of Azeyma Herself, Mr. Galvjn Djt-Setlas, currently of Empyreum, Ward 23, Plot 20 in Ishgard, is hereby authorized and encouraged by to kiss me, Miss Niamh Bivaidonas, Junior Aetherolinguist, Student of Kind Aurochs, formerly of East Journey’s End in Sharlayan, by my own personal and willing consent, whenever and wherever he so wishes and chooses.**”
Niamh waited patiently for the ink to dry, before turning over the little card to add the caveats. “**Permission is assumed barring any malicious motivations, or moments of dubious legality or obvious illegality, save such illegality as is necessary to protect and pursue the greater good for the people of Etheirys, of which we both are included.” The print was immaculate but tiny, and Niamh was pleased. If he didn’t have to squint–if she didn’t make him work to read the whole thing, what was even the point?
“For I myself shall like to this decay, And eke my name be wiped out likewise."”
The thick calfskin that she’d scrawled this out on was stiff and inflexible–really, more like a square of shoe leather than a fine parchment, which suited her purposes perfectly. She wanted this message to last in a pocket, in a wallet, on a walk, in a book–wherever he took it with him, if he liked it enough.
“"Not so," (quod I) "let baser things devise To die in dust, but you shall live by fame:”
“Let baser things devise to die in dust, but you shall live by fame,” Niamh repeated to herself softly, bringing the poet’s words from memory into moment. The little card would not last forever. If she had wanted true longevity, she should have had the message engraved into some sturdy metal and even then, time would take its toll on this gift. Again, that wasn’t the point. The point was–the point was…
“My verse your vertues rare shall eternize, And in the heavens write your glorious name:”
The point was…it was…
“Where whenas death shall all the world subdue, Our love shall live, and later life renew."”
The point was, even in the same breath that this was a very silly gesture, it was still a gesture that took Galvjn’s interests and desires seriously and clearly dictated the terms of her consent. It was a work of language-art almost poetic in its precision and Niamh would be happy to recite it to Galvjn ad nauseam.

Sea Otter Heaven, Morro Bay (No. 4)
The historic population of California sea otters was estimated at 16,000 before the fur trade decimated the population, leading to their assumed extinction. Today's population of California sea otters are the descendants of a single colony of about 50 sea otters located near Bixby Creek Bridge in March 1938 by Howard G. Sharpe, owner of the nearby Rainbow Lodge on Bixby Bridge in Big Sur. Their principal range has gradually expanded and extends from Pigeon Point in San Mateo County to Santa Barbara County.
Sea otters were once numerous in San Francisco Bay. Historical records revealed the Russian-American Company snuck Aleuts into San Francisco Bay multiple times, despite the Spanish capturing or shooting them while hunting sea otters in the estuaries of San Jose, San Mateo, San Bruno and around Angel Island. The founder of Fort Ross, Ivan Kuskov, finding otters scarce on his second voyage to Bodega Bay in 1812, sent a party of Aleuts to San Francisco Bay, where they met another Russian party and an American party, and caught 1,160 sea otters in three months. By 1817, sea otters in the area were practically eliminated and the Russians sought permission from the Spanish and the Mexican governments to hunt further and further south of San Francisco. In 1833, fur trappers George Nidever and George Yount canoed "along the Petaluma side of [the] Bay, and then proceeded to the San Joaquin River", returning with sea otter, beaver, and river otter pelts. Remnant sea otter populations may have survived in the bay until 1840, when the Rancho Punta de Quentin was granted to Captain John B. R. Cooper, a sea captain from Boston, by Mexican Governor Juan Bautista Alvarado along with a license to hunt sea otters, reportedly then prevalent at the mouth of Corte Madera Creek.

The secret lives of the large, bald ones and Glacier Bay National Park
Monday, July 19, 2021
CAL - This week I am happy to report that the large, bald one spent another weekend outside of our room of heaven in beautiful Anchorage, Alaska. Up until we arrived here, she spent so much time inside with me that I was starting to get worried. I am happy that she is out and about again, undoubtedly engaging in the secretive world of the large, bald ones.
During my solo time, I like to imagine the large, bald pets of other cats gathering in our absence. It must be total and utter chaos. For starters, how would they set boundaries with one another? In their unsupervised state, I imagine them doing such incomprehensible things as sitting too close to each other and sharing food (the horror!).
Tumblr media
Now, I have invested a large amount of time teaching Michele almost everything she knows about boundaries, but even under my strict tutelage, she is still only a beginner. Multiple times she has returned home smelling of other large, bald ones. One time she even came home smelling like a regular cat! You can imagine my dismay. I could tell she knew she had messed up, given the sheepish look on her face.
These are the thoughts that one struggles with, as an owner of a large, bald cat. On one hand, you want them to be independent and happy but on the other, it’s hard to watch them fail.
MICHELE - This week yet another bucket list item was marked off of the list! The majestic Glacier Bay National Park did not disappoint. Seeing Glacier Bay during a weekend trip from Anchorage takes some planning, but is well worth the effort.
On Friday evening, I took the last flight from Anchorage to Juneau, staying at the Extended Stay by the airport, which was literally a 5-minute walk from my gate. A late dinner in Juneau is a little tricky, but luckily Papa John's faithfully delivers until 11pm.
On Saturday morning I took an Alaskan Seaplane to Gustavus, the small town next to the park. The views from the south side of the plane were stunning as we flew over a series of little green islands that sprinkled the brilliantly blue water. The view from the north side of the plane featured snow-capped mountains and even a few glaciers! Upon landing in the teeny, tiny airport, a transport bus from Glacier Bay Lodge retrieved me for the remainder of the journey, which involved a 20-minute drive on a paved road.
Since I arrived a cool 6 hours before check-in, the attendant behind the desk kindly stored my bags and fetched me some coffee from the kitchen. I spent nearly an hour sitting on the stunning deck watching the boats drift by in Bartlett Cove.
Most of the day was spent hiking from the lodge to the river, which meanders through an old-growth rainforest and eventually opens up into a vast river valley, ending at the mouth of Bartlett River. I had a lovely dinner at the lodge and enjoyed an extra-large glass of Malbec while watching the sun dip towards the horizon flanked on either side by snow-capped mountains.
The next morning had an early start with a 7am boarding call for the Sea Life tour of Glacier Bay. This is the reason that people travel here.
Glacier Bay National Park keeps strict restrictions on boat travel to preserve the natural ways of the wildlife as much as possible. The guide explained that Glacier Bay is one of the few national parks that was founded for the purpose of scientific study. The park staff does not interfere with nature and when it goes out of balance, they always allow it to correct itself. Case in point, this year they are experiencing a major overpopulation of sea otters. As we floated across the bay, we saw friendly otters in what seemed like an endless stream, each of them floating on their backs watching us curiously. The guide explained that eventually they will consume most of the shellfish and the population will naturally dwindle back down.
The thing about any wildlife viewing tour is that you never know what you’ll see. On this particular tour, we lucked out big time by seeing multiple humpback whales, stellar sea lions, bald eagles, puffins, and a mother brown bear teaching her cub how to swim. Even the guide could barely believe his eyes!
Of course, the highlight of the tour, and the thing you can always count on seeing, was the glaciers. When all was said and done we visited 7 tidewater glaciers, including spending nearly 30 minutes in front of a glacier called Margerie, while the crew patiently took everyone’s picture and handed out hot chocolates.
Arriving back right on schedule, at 3pm, the process to get back to Anchorage begins. Check-in at the Gustavus airport is downright painful, with substantially more people than the airport was ever meant to handle. A long layover at Juneau becomes equally painful as the one restaurant had already closed for the day. Around 10pm I finally arrive in Anchorage and get lucky by finding an available taxi and am home by 10:30.
All in all, Glacier Bay National Park and Lodge is an amazing trip and definitely a must-see while in Alaska.

DAILY DEVOTIONAL FOR DECEMBER 9, 2023
God’s Creation
By Lorraine Baldus (Michigan, USA)
READ GENESIS 1:1-13
"The heavens and the earth and all who live in them were completed."
GENESIS 2:1 (CEB)
"A few years ago my sister and I took a trip to Alaska. The glory of God’s creation was everywhere — the blue ocean, majestic snow-capped mountains, sparkling glaciers, bald eagles, grizzly bears, moose, seals, otters, and whales, just to name a few examples. I couldn’t help but stand in awe, trying to take it all in. I felt lucky to have 10 days to enjoy all this beauty.
When I returned home, I realized I still had the blessing of God’s creation all around me. There are no mountains, glaciers, or oceans where I live, and no whales, grizzly bears, moose, or seals to be seen. However, there are tall maple trees, breathtaking flowering bushes, chirping birds, and squirrels scattering about. We have sunshine and blue sky as well as thunderstorms and blizzards. I am able to enjoy the beauty of four distinct seasons each year.
No matter where we are, God’s creation is all around us. Sometimes we take it all for granted. We forget to spend time truly seeing what’s right in front of us. We don’t have to go to new places to be amazed by God’s creation. Look around; beauty surrounds us every day." God's creation is everywhere. No travel is needed to see some of it. It varies from one part of the country to another. Appreciate the beauty that is around you and if you have an opportunity to see other places, then do so.
TODAY'S PRAYER
"Creator God, help us not to take your creation for granted. Remind us that our world would not exist without your handiwork. May we spend time enjoying the beauty and never forget to thank you for it." Amen.
Genesis 1:1-13
"1 When God began to create the heavens and the earth 2 the earth was without shape or form, it was dark over the deep sea, and God’s wind swept over the waters 3 God said, “Let there be light.” And so light appeared. 4 God saw how good the light was. God separated the light from the darkness. 5 God named the light Day and the darkness Night. There was evening and there was morning: the first day. 6 God said, “Let there be a dome in the middle of the waters to separate the waters from each other.” 7 God made the dome and separated the waters under the dome from the waters above the dome. And it happened in that way. 8 God named the dome Sky. There was evening and there was morning: the second day. 9 God said, “Let the waters under the sky come together into one place so that the dry land can appear.” And that’s what happened. 10 God named the dry land Earth, and he named the gathered waters Seas. God saw how good it was. 11 God said, “Let the earth grow plant life: plants yielding seeds and fruit trees bearing fruit with seeds inside it, each according to its kind throughout the earth.” And that’s what happened. 12 The earth produced plant life: plants yielding seeds, each according to its kind, and trees bearing fruit with seeds inside it, each according to its kind. God saw how good it was. 13 There was evening and there was morning: the third day." God was creating this magical world one day at a time as He separated things into night/day, land/sea and so forth. The meticulous care shows in the result of what we now live among. Blessings came from God even in the beginning. Joe

Otters, with their playful antics, glide through the water with ease, while herons and kingfishers stand watchful along the banks.
In the depths of the ocean, coral reefs form intricate cities teeming with life. Vibrant fish, from the tiniest clownfish to the majestic sea turtles, glide through this underwater paradise. The coral itself, an artwork of nature, provides shelter and sustenance for countless species, each playing their unique role in the intricate dance of the ecosystem.
