It's not much but the last couple of shots from Val's birthday sparked this idea, and I managed to steal a few minutes to write it. Happy birthday, my girl. We both love you like the stars.

It’s raining when Val and Mitch finally leave El Coyote Cojo. Inside Val squeezed tight both Lupe and Vanessa, and each of them grabbed Mitch for an embrace, too. He wasn’t surprised by Lupe, but Vanessa caught him off-guard, and he blushed afterward.

Val laughs and holds her free hand out to feel the droplets, and Mitch laughs too. He didn’t know it rained in the city. Her apartment is only a few blocks away, and he watches with awe as she skillfully weaves between the traffic and the pedestrians. Just before the entrance to her building, she ducks under an awning and turns to grin at him in front of a bank of vending machines.

“Burritos are best when you’re drunk,” she proclaims, and he laughs.

“Expect they are since they’re pretty rancid otherwise.”

She giggles and smacks his arm. “Are not. Lived on those things.” He moves as if to pay but she holds up a hand to him, and her eyes light up as she hacks the machine. Seconds later the machine spits out two burritos, and the first one hits the pavement before she can grab it. “Taste even better when they’re free.”

She gives him an almost guilty grin as she hands him a burrito before ripping hers open and taking a big bite. He follows her lead, and he’s surprised to find that she’s right— the burrito is better than ever. She provides them with a pair of liberated NiColas to wash down the burritos, and they eat while watching the rain. She scarfs hers down before he’s finished half of his, and he can’t help but smile as he imagines little Valerie on the streets, learning how to use her klepped cyberdeck by klepping soda and burritos.

She catches him watching and her eyebrows knit. She looks down at the wrapper in her hand then back up at him as she clenches her fist, defiance in her eyes. He loves when she gets that look. “What?”

He shakes his head and takes a swig of NiCola before answering, “Appreciate you indulging me today. Know birthdays aren’t your thing.”

She shrugs and doesn’t meet his eye as she tosses her wrapper and can in the trash piled by the bin. “Good to remember I have friends.”

“So, how was it? I do okay?”

She studies her manicure silently. With each passing moment he grows more worried that despite her visible enjoyment of the evening, he made a mistake. But finally she looks up at him and he sees why she’s been silent— her eyes are filled with tears and her voice wavers as she answers him.

“Best I’ve ever had.”

“Oh, Val,” he sighs, pulling her in for an embrace. As he runs his fingers through her curls, he feels her shoulders heave. After a moment she pulls back. He wipes the tears from her cheek with his silicone thumb, then tips her chin up toward him. “I love you, Val. Love you like the stars.”

Sorry for taking so damn long. Based off the casting of John Krasinski, I am looking for an older man who looks like an older man. None of these baby-faced 40-somethings. I don't want a Victor who looks like a Silicone Valley CEO, I want a European man who looks like he could run a nation.

Plus, with the Krasinski's age (43) and the existence of the Illuminati, I'd expect the Fantastic Four to be in their "3rd Era". I do NOT want an origin story. I want the Future Foundation at bare minimum. (Namor's actor, Tenoch Huerta, is also 41. I'm really... really... appreciating these older actors.)

Franklin and Valerie should be teenagers (considering that all the other pre-Young Avengers are) and there should a history between Reed and Victor HOPEFULLY complicated enough that they have been enemies and allies. With Valerie already there, HOPEFULLY, she should already be studying magic.

Also, it is a stretch, but with Future Foundation, I'd kill to see other members as researchers (classics are Storm, Black Panther, and Spider-Man). Of course they wouldn't have them be FF, but it would be hilarious if Victor was a partner and he wasn't the antagonist at all.

Explosive volcanic eruption produced rare mineral on Mars Planetary scientists from Rice University, NASA’s Johnson Space Center and the California Institute of Technology have an answer to a mystery that’s puzzled the Mars research community since NASA’s Curiosity rover discovered a mineral called tridymite in Gale Crater in 2016. Tridymite is a high-temperature, low-pressure form of quartz that is extremely rare on Earth, and it wasn’t immediately clear how a concentrated chunk of it ended up in the crater. Gale Crater was chosen as Curiosity’s landing site due to the likelihood that it once held liquid water, and Curiosity found evidence that confirmed Gale Crater was a lake as recently as 1 billion years ago. “The discovery of tridymite in a mudstone in Gale Crater is one of the most surprising observations that the Curiosity rover has made in 10 years of exploring Mars,” said Rice’s Kirsten Siebach, co-author of a study published online in Earth and Planetary Science Letters. “Tridymite is usually associated with quartz-forming, explosive, evolved volcanic systems on Earth, but we found it in the bottom of an ancient lake on Mars, where most of the volcanoes are very primitive.” Siebach, an assistant professor in Rice’s Department of Earth, Environmental and Planetary Sciences, is a mission specialist on NASA’s Curiosity team. To suss out the answer to the mystery, she partnered with two postdoctoral researchers in her Rice research group, Valerie Payré and Michael Thorpe, NASA’s Elizabeth Rampe and Caltech’s Paula Antoshechkina. Payré, the study’s lead author, is now at Northern Arizona University and preparing to join the faculty of the University of Iowa in the fall. Siebach and colleagues began by reevaluating data from every reported find of tridymite on Earth. They also reviewed volcanic materials from models of Mars volcanism and reexamined sedimentary evidence from the Gale Crater lake. They then came up with a new scenario that matched all the evidence: Martian magma sat for longer than usual in a chamber below a volcano, undergoing a process of partial cooling called fractional crystallization that concentrated silicon. In a massive eruption, the volcano spewed ash containing the extra silicon in the form of tridymite into the Gale Crater lake and surrounding rivers. Water helped break down the ash through natural processes of chemical weathering, and water also helped sort the minerals produced by weathering. The scenario would have concentrated tridymite, producing minerals consistent with the 2016 find. It would also explain other geochemical evidence Curiosity found in the sample, including opaline silicates and reduced concentrations of aluminum oxide. “It's actually a straightforward evolution of other volcanic rocks we found in the crater,” Siebach said. “We argue that because we only saw this mineral once, and it was highly concentrated in a single layer, the volcano probably erupted at the same time the lake was there. Although the specific sample we analyzed was not exclusively volcanic ash, it was ash that had been weathered and sorted by water.” If a volcanic eruption like the one in the scenario did occur when Gale Crater contained a lake, it would mean explosive volcanism occurred more than 3 billion years ago, while Mars was transitioning from a wetter and perhaps warmer world to the dry and barren planet it is today. “There’s ample evidence of basaltic volcanic eruptions on Mars, but this is a more evolved chemistry,” she said. “This work suggests that Mars may have a more complex and intriguing volcanic history than we would have imagined before Curiosity.” The Curiosity rover is still active, and NASA is preparing to celebrate the 10th anniversary of its landing next month. Mars's crust more complex, evolved than previously thought Early crust on Mars may be more complex than previously thought—and it may even be similar to our own planet’s original crust. The Martian surface is uniformly basaltic, a product of billions of years of volcanism and flowing lava on the surface that eventually cooled. Because Mars did not undergo full-scale surface remodeling like the shifting of continents on Earth, scientists had thought Mars’ crustal history was a relatively simple tale. But in a new study, researchers found locations in the Red Planet’s southern hemisphere with greater concentrations of silicon, a chemical element, than what would be expected in a purely basaltic setting. The silica concentration had been exposed by space rocks that slammed into Mars, excavating material that was embedded miles below the surface, and revealing a hidden past. “There is more silica in the composition that makes the rocks not basalt, but what we call more evolved in composition,” says Valerie Payré, assistant professor in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at the University of Iowa and the study’s corresponding author. “That tells us how the crust formed on Mars is definitely more complex than what we knew. So, it’s more about understanding that process, and especially what it means for how Earth’s crust first formed.” Scientists believe Mars formed about 4.5 billion years ago. Exactly how the Red Planet came into being is a mystery, but there are theories. One idea is that Mars formed via a titanic collision of rocks in space that, with its intense heat, spawned an entirely liquefied state, also known as a magma ocean. The magma ocean gradually cooled, the theory goes, yielding a crust, like a layer of skin, that would be singularly basaltic. Another theory is that the magma ocean was not all-encompassing, and that parts of the first crust on Mars had a different origin, one that would show silica concentrations different from basaltic. Payré and her research partners analyzed data gathered by the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter for the planet’s southern hemisphere, which previous research had indicated was the oldest region. The researchers found nine locations—such as craters and fractures in the terrain—that were rich in feldspar, a mineral associated with lava flows that are more silicic than basaltic. “This was the first clue,” Payré says. “It is because the terrains are feldspar-rich that we explored the silica concentrations there.” Feldspar had been found previously in other regions on Mars, but further analysis showed the chemical composition in those areas was more basaltic. That did not deter the researchers, who turned to another instrument, called THEMIS, which can detect silica concentrations through infrared wavelength reflections from the Martian surface. With data from THEMIS, the team determined the terrain at their chosen locations was more silicic than basaltic. Adding further credence to their observations, meteorites such as Erg Chech 002, discovered in the Sahara and dating roughly to the birth of the solar system, show similar silicic and other mineral compositions that the team observed in the nine locations on Mars. The researchers also dated the crust to about 4.2 billion years, which would make it the oldest crust found on Mars to date. Payré says she was mildly surprised at the discovery. “There have been rovers on the surface that have observed rocks that were more silicic than basaltic,” she says. “So, there were ideas that the crust could be more silicic. But we never knew, and we still don’t know, how the early crust was formed, or how old it is, so it’s kind of a mystery still.” While Mars’ crustal origin remains shrouded, Earth’s crustal history is even less clear, as any vestiges of our planet’s original crust have been long erased due to the shifting of continental plates for billions of years. Still, the finding may offer insights into Earth’s origins. “We don’t know our planet’s crust from the beginning; we don’t even know when life first appeared,” Payré says. “Many think the two could be related. So, understanding what the crust was like a long time ago could help us understand the whole evolution of our planet.” Payré conducted the research as a postdoctoral researcher at Northern Arizona University. She joined the UI in August. The study, “An evolved early crust exposed on Mars revealed through spectroscopy,” was published online Nov. 4 in the journal Geophysical Research Letters. Contributing authors are Mark Salvatore and Christopher Edwards from Northern Arizona. NASA funded the research, through the Mars Science Laboratory Participating Scientist Program and the Mars Odyssey THEMIS project. Jared Harris as Valery Legasov in HBOs Chernobyl.

This was an aged Legasov look for the opening scenes of the show. Although the character had aged, we also needed to show signs or radiation exposure, so pitted skin and thinning hair helped tell the story. Jared is wearing a silicone bald pate and extensive prosaide transfer facial appliances. Prosthetics sculpted by Paul Spateri and moulded, cast and pre artworked by the fab team at BGFX. Applied by myself, Paul Spateri and Daniel Parker. All hair work courtesy of Daniel Parker and Julio Parodi. Big thanks to Jared for his patience, good humour and congratulations on such an incredible performance.
