One of the key protagonists of postwar architecture in Hamburg was Werner Kallmorgen (1902-79) whose father Georg himself was an influential architect in Hamburg and the formerly independent town of Altona. Accordingly it is no wonder that Werner followed in the footsteps of his father and studied architecture at the technical universities in Munich and Dresden between 1920 and 1925. His first professional steps led him into the Altona building authority and a consecutive independent practice. Until the beginning of WWII Kallmorgen primarily designed single-family homes and conversions that reflected the architectural doctrine of the regime but with a twist: although at first sight his pitch-roofed houses seem very conservative but on closer inspection reveal how Kallmorgen played with the roof geometry and the dormers in order to give the houses an individual character. With the German invasion of Poland on September 1 1939 private construction basically came to a halt and Kallmorgen upon the advice of Konstanty Gutschow became member of the NSDAP, a move that secured him commissions and saved him from frontline duty.
Immediately after the end of the war Kallmorgen was commissioned to overhaul a warehouse in Hamburg‘s famous Hafenstadt, a commission that proved to be pivotal as he later restored the entire warehouse district until the late 1960s. In the context of postwar reconstruction the architect also became involved with theaters and reconstructed/redesigned e.g. his father’s Thalia theater in Hamburg or the Laves theater in Hannover. Beyond this Kallmorgen also became a major architect of prestigious office buildings in Hamburg, among them those for IBM and the news magazine “Der Spiegel”.
The entirety of Kallmorgen’s work has been painstakingly researched by Ulrich Cornehl in his PhD thesis “Raummassagen. Der Architekt Werner Kallmorgen 1902-1979”, published by Dölling und Galitz in 2003: in a career-spanning account Cornehl provides a complete picture of Kallmorgen’s life and work along his major buildings. Together with the meticulously detailed work catalogue the book, despite some flaws in the footnotes, is a great read and an indispensable resource.

The Pretty Reckless to Support AC/DC on Upcoming European Tour
The Power Up Tour launches in May
Tumblr media
The Pretty Reckless [Matt Bishop/The Rock Revival]
This summer, AC/DC are returning to the road for the first since 2016. The massive run is a celebration of the hard rock hitmakers’ 50th anniversary, and their first time supporting their latest album on tour. The global trek begins with a run across Europe this summer, starting at Veltins Arena in Gelsenkirchen, Germany on 17 May. The Power Up Tour will see the group performing in Spain, Austria, Belgium, France, the UK, and more. Very special guests for the run will be American rockers The Pretty Reckless.
Due to overwhelming demand, second shows were added in Seville, Spain, Dresden, Germany, and Hannover, Germany. Check out the full tour itinerary below. More dates around the world are expected to be announced very soon.
The Pretty Reckless are not strangers to the big stage, having supported Shinedown on their Revolutions Live Tour in 2022, and the Foo Fighters last year. The Pretty Reckless released their acclaimed fourth album, Death by Rock and Roll, back in 2021. The album features special guest appearances by Soundgarden’s Kim Thayil and Pearl Jam’s Matt Cameron on “Only Love Can Save Me Now,” and Rage Against The Machine’s Tom Morello on the hit single, “And So It Went.” The album peaked at No. 5 in Germany and No. 6 in the UK. It topped the UK Rock & Metal Albums chart, and scored Top 5 notches on Billboard’s Top Rock and Top Hard Rock Albums charts.
Back in January, The Pretty Reckless entered the studio to begin work on their fifth album.
Last October, AC/DC made their triumphant return to the stage after a seven year hiatus. The band performed after Judas Priest with previously retired bassist Cliff Williams and drummer Matt Laug sitting behind the kit. While they didn’t scratch any songs off this list, they did debut two tracks from their 2020 album, Power Up – “Demon Fire” and “Shot in the Dark.” The band’s seventeenth studio album, Power Up peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, and topped the charts in several other countries around the world.
The rest of the set was filled with some of the band’s biggest hits, and several rare gems that haven’t seen the lights of a stage in decades.
AC/DC kicked off their set with their 1979 fan favorite, “If You Want Blood (You’ve Got It).” It was the first time the band opened with the song in 20 years. From there, they launched into their massive hit, “Back in Black.” The played “Dog Eat Dog” for the first time with frontman Brian Johnson since 1996, and “Riff Raff” for the first time with Johnson on the mic since 2009. AC/DC played both songs back in 2016 when Axl Rose of fellow Power Trip performers Guns N’ Roses was filling in for Johnson on vocals. Johnson was forced to step away from the band while dealing with hearing loss. Axl played the final 22 shows of AC/DC’s Rock or Bust Tour.
AC/DC also pulled out “Stiff Upper Lip” for the first time since 2003. Other highlights included “Shot Down in Flames,” “Thunderstruck,” “Have a Drink on Me,” “Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap,” “Shoot to Thrill,” “Rock ‘n’ Roll Train,” “Highway to Hell,” “Whole Lotta Rosie,” and many more.
While bassist Cliff Williams has retired from touring, the band has confirmed that Chris Chaney (ex-Jane’s Addiction, Alanis Morissette) will be joining them on tour. Another alumnus of Alanis’s band – drummer Matt Laug – will once again be performing with AC/DC on the upcoming run of dates. Laug made his debut with AC/DC at Power Trip back in October.
“We are thrilled to finally announce the Power Up European Tour,” AC/DC said. “Angus [Young], Brian [Johnson], Stevie [Young], and Matt [Laug] will be joined by Chris Chaney to carry the torch for Cliff. The tour will see us play shows across Germany, Italy, Spain, The Netherlands, Austria, Switzerland, England, Slovakia, Belgium, France & Ireland this Summer. We can’t wait to see you all out there.”

AC/DC [Winslow Townson/Invision/AP]
AC/DC’s performance at Power Trip a few months ago saw the band take the stage with frontman Brian Johnson, lead guitarist Angus Young, rhythm guitarist Stevie Young, bassist Cliff Williams, and drummer Matt Laug. In July of 2016, Williams announced that he would be retiring after the completion of the band’s Rock or Bust World Tour. He returned to the fold, however, in 2018 to record bass on the band’s new album, Power Up.
The confirmation of Laug’s involvement with the band for the Power Trip was most likely connected to legal issues stemming from original drummer Phil Rudd’s 2014 arrest. Rudd was charged with attempting to procure the murder of two men, according to New Zealand’s Bay of Plenty Police District representative Kim Perks at the time. He was also charged with threatening to kill, possession of cannabis, and possession of methamphetamine. A day after he was arrested, one of the charges for attempting to procure a murder was dropped. In April of 2015, Rudd pleaded guilty to the remaining charges at the Tauranga District Court (New Zealand). In July of 2015, he was sentenced to eight months of home detention plus a $120,000 USD fine.
Laug is a storied rock music drummer, having done stints with Alice Cooper, Mike Campbell and the Dirty Knobs, Slash’s Snakepit, and Alanis Morissette, as previously mentioned.
At the time of his arrest, Rudd had already completed recording drums for AC/DC’s sixteenth studio album, Rock or Bust, which came out just days later on November 28. Despite Rudd playing on the record, AC/DC recruited former Shogun drummer Bob Richards to fill in for Rudd in two music videos the band shot for the album amid Rudd’s ongoing legal issues at the time. In February of 2015, AC/DC recruited former drummer Chris Slade to play with them at the 57th Annual GRAMMY® Awards. Slade was a member of AC/DC from 1989-1994 and played drums on their 1990 album The Razor’s Edge. The album hit #2 on the Billboard Top 200 and contains some of the band’s biggest hits. To date, the disc has sold over 5 million copies in the U.S. alone. Slade also appears on the band’s 1992 live effort, AC/DC Live. Slade would then join the band for their massive Rock or Bust World Tour, which began on May 5 at the Gelredome in Arnhem, Netherlands.
While best known for his stints with AC/DC, Slade has also performed with the likes of Asia, Gary Numan, Manfred Man’s Earth Band, Terra Nova, Bloodstock, David Gilmore, Uriah Heep, Gary Moore, Tom Jones, The Firm, Damage Control, and others.
In 2020, AC/DC released their seventeenth studio album, Power Up. The record peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, and topped the charts in several other countries around the world. Once again, Angus and Malcolm Young’s nephew Stevie Young, who took over rhythm guitar duties for Malcolm after he stepped away from the band in 2014 due to his declining health, played on the record. Malcolm Young passed away back in 2017.

Every single Jimmy Page quote from the 1980 European Tour
“Good evening. Good evening. Good evening. Nice, right, well we’re here aren’t we? OK, We got a little number now. It’s called, in a bit of a rough translation ah, Schwarz Hund.”
— Dortmund, Germany, June 17
“Good evening. Good evening. Nice, well a little ditty from the past. Not so far back, but still from the past, and it’s called, no it’s Schwarz Hund.”
— Cologne, Germany, June 18
“Aye, bon soir. Merci. Ah Hello, hello, OK, Chien Noir.”
~~~
“Hey hold on. Listen. I tell you what, we came here because we really loved you. We really wanted to play to you. The trouble is, at the moment, I can’t even hear meself play. So if you could keep it just a little quiet for a moment. Thank you very much.”
— Brussels, Belgium, June 20
“Good evening. Good evening. That’s right don’t get out of your seat yet, we’ve got a bit more time left. Ok, we’ve got another number coming if I can remember what it is. Yeah, it’s called ah, it comes off one of the earlier albums, if you can remember those, and it’s called, it’s called Black Dog.”
— Rotterdam, Holland, June 21
“Good evening. Good evening. Well I know you wonder why you’re all here tonight, but we’re gonna find out, and we got a number coming up now, a really old one, well not that old, it’s called Black Dog.”
— Bremen, Germany, June 23
“Good evening. I said good evening. Yeah, yeah. How bout that then? I thought I’d take me glasses off. Might be able to see the fret board better. Well we got a number now. An old one ah, hasn’t been put out to pasture yet, but it’s old and it’s called Black Dog.”
— Hannover, Germany, June 24
“Good evening. How are you? Good evening. Good evening. Well with you with you. OK. Right. We got a number, a nice little number about 36-23-36, and it’s called well what’s it called in German, Schwarz Hund, Black Dog.”
~~~
“Hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on. Hold it. We haven’t been here for seven years you know, and ah, sure we’ll play Rock and Roll, but we haven’t been sitting around on our asses for seven years. We got a lot of new songs to play too. Would you like to hear those? We’re gonna do that and we’re gonna play Rock and Roll too, Ok?”
— Vienna, Austria, June 26
“Good evening. Good evening. That’s better. Right, well there’s two of us tonight that aren’t feeling at all well. We got a bit of stomach trouble, so we’re gonna do our best whatever as usual, and ah, the next number sort of reflects how I’m feeling, and possibly the other member. It’s called Black Dog.”
— Nuremberg, Germany, June 27
“Good evening. I said good evening. Right, right, right, right, right. Well if you’ve noticed, I just took me glasses off so I can see the guitar a bit better and see you a bit better too. Right, right. Ok, we got an old one. I hope you can remember it cause it’s quite an old one. It’s called Black Dog.”
~~~
“Thanks very much.”
— Zurich, Switzerland, June 29
“Good evening. Good evening. One and all. Yes, well it’s good to see ya, and it’s good to be seen. So hey I’ve seen you before haven’t I? Yeah. Sorry about that strip just now but it’s probably as hot up here as it is down there. Ah next number is an old one, so old I hope I can remember. It’s called Black Dog.”
— Frankfurt, Germany, June 30
“Good evening. Good evening. That’s better. Right, yes, yes. I can hear all that . Right, we’re gonna do a number. It’s called ah, strangers in the night. Black Dog.”
~~~
“Right, ready? Are you ready? The worst bloody noise. I don’t think they’re ready for it, do you?”
— Mannheim, Germany, July 3
“Good evening. Good evening. Right, a happy gathering yes. Well we got a little number now from the annals of rock history, and it’s called Black Dog.”
— Munich, Germany, July 5
“Good evening all. I said good evening. Right, well it’s nice to see you and it’s nice to be seen, I can tell you that. We got a number ah, from the annals of Rock History. It’s not called Black Dog Jimmy. It’s just called Schwarz Hund.”
— Berlin, Germany, July 7

Germany’s right-wing Alternative for Germany (AfD) party was met with massive crowds of protesters Saturday, after a report revealed it had discussed deporting millions of immigrants, including German citizens, late last year.
Investigative journalism group Correctiv published a report Wednesday on the meeting between AfD and the Identitarian Movement (IM) in November, claiming IM member Martin Sellner presented a plan for "re-migration" of immigrants out of Germany, including those who already have citizenship, but have failed to integrate.
AfD has confirmed the meeting, which was allegedly captured on hidden cameras, took place but rejected assertions that it reflects their party policy.
"The AfD won't change its position on immigration policy because of a single opinion at a non-AfD meeting," a spokesperson told Reuters.
Protesters across Germany held signs on Saturday that read "Never Again is Now," "Defend Democracy" and "Against Hate" as the meeting garners comparisons with the Nazis.
A protest in Frankfurt on Saturday had around 35,000 people and one in Hamburg had around 50,000, police said. Others took place in cities like Stuttgart, Nuremberg and Hannover.
Hamburg’s demonstration ended early over crowd size safety concerns.
Large protests in cities like Berlin and Munich are also planned for Sunday.
The report and subsequent protests have also renewed calls for a ban on the AfD in the country.
The AfD was founded in 2013 and polling suggests it has around 23% support in the country.
AfD was the first right-wing party since the Nazis to win a mayoral and district council election when it did last year. It has also made significant gains in state elections in Bavaria and Hesse.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz condemned the AfD and Identarian Movement in a statement on social media last week, comparing them to the Third Reich.
"We protect everyone — regardless of origin, skin color or how uncomfortable someone is for fanatics with assimilation fantasies," said Scholz.
Although immigration is a top issue in the country, Scholz himself previously admitted "too many are coming."

To recap the last two days
4th of December. We know there's some problems with snow in Munich but our travel agency told us it's fine and that the worst that can happen is the entire flight being rerouted to a different city in Germany. We have a 2h taxi transfer to the airport and arrive at 11am. We check in and are told the connecting flight from Munich to Hannover was cancelled but that we can get a later flight the same day. It would be a 6h hour layover but it would be fine. We go through security. The timetable says something like "gate info in 217 mins" and I'm like surely that's a typo. We figure out the scheduled gate where someone tells us the Lufthansa website says the flight is delayed by 20 mins. We check the airport website and it says it's delayed by 3h. There's absolutely no one at the gate. A couple minutes later I refresh the page and the flight status is changed to cancelled. At the same time I get an email with a job rejection. Still no one at the gate. 20 minutes later someone confirms the cancellation and we all have to check out and go through security again and leave the airport then get told to simply call or email the airline and we all have a budget of 150€ for one day per person for a taxi and hotel and food. Which we all have to sort out ourselves. Lufthansa cannot be reached by phone, mail or chat bot because they're completely swamped with complaints. Our travel agency doesn't even know our flight is cancelled. We wait for almost 3h for our travel agency to find a new flight for us - which they couldn't book remotely - and we're told that a hotel is still our responsibility. We're told to find a Lufthansa office which doesn't exist and only by chance figure out where to go. We go inside the airport again at 4pm and physically stand in a queue until 9pm without food or water or the possibility to sit down - even though my mum has a mobility issue - until we can reschedule our flight. There's two people sharing one computer handling every single case. Two people were allowed to cut in line but I was told off for asking a question. Some people had to accept 4am flights through Serbia and one couple was told the only option was to fly to Greece and from there to Munich even though the company was aware the flight would be cancelled again and they'd just get stuck in a second country. We book a hotel afterwards and arrive there at 10pm. We order food online since their kitchen is already closed.
5th of December. We get up at 4am and are back at the airport at 6am. We're wearing the same clothes since we only packed for a week and have no clean shirts or underwear or anything. We drink a bad coffee, buy a croissant and board an airplane to London at 8:35am with half an hour delay. I have a middle seat. The business class is half empty with several people taking a whole row to stretch out and sleep while we know there's still other people stuck in Cyprus who were told this flight was full. The flight is 5h long. My mum has a high risk of thrombosis and no access to medication. We get a single bottle of water and a flapjack. At some point I try to go to the bathroom and am told to quickly go back to my seat and fasten my seat belt because we're about to experience heavy turbulence. A stewardess walks through the aisles saying the same. I panic. Absolutely nothing happens. Zero turbulence. By the time we're allowed to stand up again there's 6 people in the bathroom queue before me and I'm told I'm not allowed to stand in the aisle and have to wait at my seat. By the time I sit down other people have already joined the queue again. At some point the purser in the business class takes pity on me and I'm allowed to use the business class bathroom. We fly two time zones West and arrive at 11am (mentally 1pm) starving and with aching legs. We have to go through security again and have to throw away our water. My mum gets randomly selected for a security check. The airport is busier than I've ever seen it and I've been at Heathrow multiple times each year when I studied in England. People are inconsiderate and even aggressive. We eat a sandwich and try to buy some painkillers. Our layover is another 5h. An hour before our flight I suddenly get a panic attack that gives me muscle spasms and I just about manage to board the plane. By the time we board I have to pee really badly because I downed an entire bottle of coconut water to get my blood circulation back up after the panic attack. We have a half hour delay because there's unfinished paperwork. Another middle seat. I get up to go to the bathroom as soon as we reached cruising height and use the bathroom at the front of the airplane because they didn't close the business class curtains and I know they sometimes don't bother on this short flight. When I come back the curtains are drawn and I'm told off for crossing the curtains. We land at just after 7pm German time because of the delay in the third time zone of the day. We arrive home at 8pm.

De Algemene Verwarring #108 - 4 March 2024
Episode one hundred and eight of De Algemene Verwarring was broadcast on Monday, March 4, 2024, and you can listen to it by clicking on the link below that will take you directly to the Mixcloud page:
Pictured below is Bärchen Und Die Milchbubis! They are a band from Hannover, Germany, they released one album and two singles between 1980 and 1982, and now, in 2024, they are touring again! But that's not why I played them in the show, I played them because they are one of the bands that are featured in the fantastic Inner World 033 podcast, by the World Of Echo label, and compiled by the Famous Mammals. It's a three hour long feast of great great music, and I wanted to direct my listeners to this podcast, go listen and enjoy. Also, this episode of De Algemene Verwarring is a digital one, so as always I'm playing some tracks that I don't own on a physical lp or cd. Some of them are just ripped off the youtubes because unavailable on other places, and some others are from the Bandcamp vaults. Links below in the playlist when available. I particularly enjoyed making this episode, I think there are some real bangers in there. Oh and by the way sorry for the delay with the update here. And beneath the photo you can find the playlist for this show. Enjoy!

Of Sirens Deep - [chapter 4]
Tumblr media
(11 years ago)
“Pa?”
Papa didn’t answer, quietly leaning over the old crate we shared. The sun was beginning to kiss the horizon of Macatania’s biggest lagoon, the Blonde Lady silhouetted in its golden rays. It had been silent between us for much too long–it was boring. “Pa?” I tugged at Papa’s sleeve, trying and failing to get his attention. He was distracted, watching the sea as it pushed and pulled along the shore. “Paaaaaaa, are you listening to me?”
“I can hear you, Aria. What is it?”
“Won’t you tell me what happened to Ma?”
“Hm?” Papa finally looked at me, furrowing his old brows and frowning. “Not till you’re older.”
“How old is older?” I wondered, puffing out my chest as much as possible and kicking my feet against the side of the crate. “Amaris says I grew a whole tick this month.”
“Did you now?” Pa chuckled, running a tired hand down his stubbled face. He always looked so tired when he got back from a trip and his beard was always so long. “I’ve been gone for too long. I didn’t even notice.”
“That’s ok. Aunty claims we’ll have to go shopping for new clothes soon.”
“Hm. Why are you asking about your Ma, cricket?”
It was my turn to frown, shrugging my shoulders.
“Mrs. Hannover at the bakery let me hold her new baby the other day,” I admitted, scrunching my face in thought. “It’s a boy. He looked a lot like her and Mr. Hannover with the same colored skin and eyes. I don’t look anything like you, Pa.”
“Ah.” Pa breathed, folding up his hands over his knees as he looked out towards the lagoon again. “You don’t remember what your Ma looked like.”
“She was beautiful; I remember that.”
“Aye, that she was.”
“What happened to her Pa?” I wondered. “The Hannover boy will have both his parents. Why can’t Ma be here with us too?”
“I wish she could be, cricket. More than anything,” Pa said, sounding sad. He removed his pendant from under his shirt, holding it in the palm of his hand. I clamored to look over his arm, reaching out a hand to touch the bluebottle glass that made up the center. “But your Ma died.”
“I know that already.” I whined, looking up at him as I leaned on his broad arm. “But how?”
Pa appeared to think about it, his dark, intelligent eyes glistening faintly. But he smiled and shook his head, tucking the pendant away again and patting it.
“Not tonight, Aria. Come, Frenrise is probably wondering where we’ve gotten off too, hey?”
I sighed unhappily about being brushed off, but the annoyance didn’t last long as Pa took me into his arms, swinging me around in a spiral. Stopping, I threw my arms around the man’s neck, inhaling his familiar scent of salt and sea breeze.
“I’m glad you’re home, Pa.”
“Me too, cricket.” He said, stopping to look out towards the sea. “One thing about your Ma,” he drawled, tilting his chin to the horizon. “I always thought she had come directly from the sea, like some sort of angel.”
“Was she really that beautiful?”
“Aye, that she was. The most beautiful I’d ever set eyes on. Just like you will be one day, Aria.”
“When I get older, I hope I’ll still remember her.” I sighed, resting my head on his shoulder and nuzzling under his weatherworn hair. “I love you, Pa.”
“I love you too, cricket. Now come, it’s past your bedtime.”
– – –
“...sit down, child.”
Delphine’s hand guided me to a velvet lined seat, one tucked into the corner of Captain Melody’s private quarters. The room smelled of parchment and iron-ink, its center taken up by a single large table. The surface was covered in various maps and pieces of brass charting equipment. I had hoped Neva would’ve stayed at the helm, but she followed close behind the Captain, lingering like a shadow. I clutched the edges of the chair, my brain whirring fast inside my skull.
Sister?
I didn’t have a sister. I was an only child—besides Elias of course, who was a cousin and didn’t count. Pa would’ve told me if I had a sister…at least, I hoped he would’ve. There seemed to be quite a bit he hadn’t told me growing up. I reached for my neck again, picking at the skin flaps that now adorned it.
Gills. I had actual gills.
And this ship…it was inhabited by sirens, the most murderous creatures to ever grace the deep sea. Seeing as one nearly made me jump to my death just yesterday, I could only assume the stories to be true. Glancing mindlessly across the table as I rubbed my throbbing temple, I noticed a big red ‘X’ marking one of the maps and frowned even more. Pirates? Pirate sirens? It hadn’t been this crew that pillaged Macatania, had it?
“I didn’t think we’d ever find you.” Melody said, catching my attention as she rounded the mapping table and removed her hat. This revealed a ridge of gold fins sprouting from her forehead and ending at the base of her neck. Her familiar auburn-brown hair was fully visible now, while the warm light of a few oil lamps brought out the redness to her skin. Ignoring obvious fishy traits like the woman’s treasure tinted scales, I could’ve been looking in a mirror. “That warmblood who took you, I’ll strangle him myself if I ever set eyes on his face again….”
“Pa?” I wondered, finally managing a word after the news had been sprung on me. Melody grimaced and shook her head unhappily, swiping at a few maps. “He didn’t do anything wrong.
Delphine and Melody shared a look, while a single huff of air left Neva who had all but vanished into the darkness. “My Pa was a good man,” I continued, reaching to my neck only to pause. Father’s pendant. I hadn’t even noticed I didn’t have it on me. “Oh…no, no…”
“You’re looking for this?”
My head shot up as Melody lifted the necklace from across the table, the leather strap slung between her fingers.
“That belonged to my Father!” I snapped in a rush, jerking forward to grab at the trinket. Melody merely held the artifact out of my reach.
“This belongs to no one,” the Captain insisted firmly. “It belongs to the sea.”
“It was the last thing my Pa gave to me before he died, please don’t take it from me!” I begged, eyes burning with tears as Delphine used an arm to shove me back down into my chair. “P-please, its all I have left of him.”
“You shouldn’t want to remember a pitiful warmblooded.” Neva spoke up from her corner, flashing the twin fangs which protruded from her lower lip. “Moonglass belongs to Sirens. It’s a shame the last piece to exist is now tainted. We should destroy it, Captain. It could lead us astray.”
“No! No, no please don’t,” I practically wept, fighting against Delphine who wasn’t keen on letting me up from my chair.
“We found Aria, didn’t we?” Melody asked her shadowy companion. “If it helped us do that, it can help us find what we’re looking for. But even so, I want little on this ship to remind my sister of the man who kidnapped her.”
“My Pa wasn’t a kidnapper!” I snarled, “please, give it back!”
“We tried using the moonglass already and it didn’t work.” Neva continued. “I say we find what we’re looking for without the help of either of them.”
Melody ran a hand across her chin in thought. My eyes however, were trained on the pendant still hanging from her scaly fingers. It was my Father’s. And, now that he was dead, it was mine. Mine.
“Argh!” Melody yelped suddenly in pain, jerking backwards as the artifact clattered from her hand and onto the table.
“Captain?” Delphine asked, “What happened?”
“It burned me.”
“That’s not possible. Moonglass doesn’t burn sirens.”
I narrowed my eyes in frustration, still feeling Delphine’s weight across my chest as I extended a hand to try and reach it. There was a rattle as Pa’s necklace dragged itself across the wood before flinging itself from the table all on its own. The pendant spun in the air for a moment, rocketing like a bullet into my open palm as I closed my fingers around it. All three older girls were silent, Melody looking between the table and me with surprised eyes.
“How did you…?”
“This necklace was my Father’s!”  I snarled unhappily at the stranger–someone claiming to be my sister, yet doing very little to prove it. “It’s mine. You can’t take it from me!”
The last word of my sentence came out far harsher than I meant, while a noise I didn’t recognize slipped between my teeth. It sounded as though I’d stepped on a harbor cat’s tail, the hiss sharp and pronounced. Slapping a hand over my mouth in shock, I poked at my teeth with the end of my tongue. While they all seemed normal, my k-9’s felt longer than just a few seconds ago, catching on the edge of my lip and causing it to taste of copper.
“You don’t threaten the Captain, little welp.” Neva growled unhappily, unsheathing her crescent blade as I instantly whimpered at her presence.
“Knock it off,” Melody ordered, glaring at the dark haired girl who muttered something profane. She didn’t put her sword away, which is what I would’ve preferred, but she did back off. The Captain returned her honey gaze to me, a dozen questions written all over her face. “How did you do that?”
“I-I didn’t mean too…”
“Not the hiss,” Melody insisted with a hand wave, instead motioning at her neck. “You summoned the moonglass. How?”
“I…I don’t know.” I admitted honestly, still clutching the pendant as though my life depended on it. “I just wanted to reach it and I couldn’t.”
“Maybe that’s why it wouldn’t show us the way?” Delphine commented in a low whisper. “The glass no longer belongs to the sea.”
“How long have you had that necklace?” Melody wondered, leaning over her hands to stare at me.
“Only a few weeks. It was my Father’s pendant–he wore it on his travels, claiming it brought him good luck.”
“You mean you’ve never done that before?”
“No.”
“Hm.”
“My father wasn’t a kidnapper,” I said again. “He was a good and honest man. He took care of me as best he could….”
“The man who kidnapped you was far from honest.” Melody scoffed. “He was a pirate, Aria. A bloodthirsty monster. You were only a few days old when they came to our home—you were still suckling on Mama’s breast. They ran us out of the water with their spears and iron weapons like a group of frightened seals. It was lucky more of us weren’t killed.” Melody winced, lowering her head in sorrow. “They took Mama and you in a net and vanished on their ship. That pendant belonged to her—we’ve been following it for almost eighteen years. I guess it only makes sense that it was passed to you.”
“No, you’re wrong….”
“Did you ever wonder why you didn’t look like your ‘Father’? He took you away from your home and your family before you even had a chance to grow your gills.” Melody rounded the table again, taking hold of my arm as I was hauled up from the chair. Stumbling beside her, she paused in front of a large mirror that sat on her wall. “Look here. Tell me for sure that you are your Father’s daughter.”
I sucked in a sharp breath, glancing at the mirror.
My reflection was as drowned out as I felt. My hair was still scraggly from dried seawater, while the whites of my eyes had gone bloodshot. Crimson blood still oozed from the cut on my cheek, curling down my jaw and sticking to my neck. I could finally see my supposed gills for myself, watching them with a rolling stomach as they rose and fell with each shuttering inhale. I could barely even recognize myself—so much had happened in such a short amount of time.
Melody placed both her hands on my shoulders, the two of us a perfect portrait of the same genetics.
“You are my little sister,” I shivered as webbed hands gently pulled my hair back to rest over my shoulder, playing with the strands. “But your Father…he’s just another pirate. Another warmblooded traitor. He lied to you. Do you understand?”
I opened my mouth to speak, to deny every word Melody was saying. But only a pathetic squeak escaped me. I held a shaky hand to my lips as tears once again streaked down my face, unbridled and stinging. It felt impossible—Pa and I told each other everything. We’d stay up for hours, talking about whatever came to mind. I didn’t think he’d ever keep something so important from me. But then…he often said Ma had come from the sea. And though I knew he was a merchant sailor, he often came home with fantastic spoils of silver and gold and gemstones that seemed odd for his position. I never questioned where the spoils came from, just assumed he’d picked them up on his travels.
What sailor besides a pirate came home with such rare and expensive trifles?
It felt like I had just been struck in the chest. My knees folded from weakness, though Melody swept me up into her broad arms before I could hit the floor.
“Poor thing….” Delphine repeated softly as I was gently settled into a deep box bed, sinking into the folds as I curled into a ball and wept.
“It’s been a long and difficult journey to get here.” Melody mumbled, her finned hand gently tracing the curve of my hairline as she pulled velvet blankets over me. “For all of us.”
“What about the moonglass, Captain?” Neva wondered, “We have it. We can go straight there.”
“The moonglass doesn’t respond to us, Neva. You saw for yourself. We can’t use it to navigate without Aria’s help.”
“But she’s an outsider. She was raised by warmbloods. It’s not wise to trust her.”
“Let the child rest.” Melody ordered. “Return to the helm and keep us on course. I want to make as much progress as possible tonight.”
Neva huffed unpleasantly but didn’t argue anymore, her heavy boots clunking as she vanished out the door.
“She’s been in a foul mood for days,” Delphine complained, “Do you suppose it’s wise to allow her such close contact with the girl?”
“We haven’t much choice. It was a close call with the black sail; they could’ve seen us. I’m not sure how they found her first.”
“Perhaps they were tracking the moonglass?”
“Maybe. Or someone tipped them off that she was finally coming into her traits.”
“But who? Not one of our own, surely.”
“Hard to say.” Melody sighed, the sound of papers rustling as she picked up her hat from the table. “For now, she stays with us. We can protect her.”
There was a beat of silence, no doubt Delphine nodding her agreement as the two women left the room, closing the door behind them. This left only the sound of my own shuttering breathing and the creak of the ship as it rocked back and forth on the sea. The tears had stopped flowing, but my whirlwind of thoughts hadn’t. Not just about my Father and his lies, but also my entire life. Pulling the pendant out of Delphine’s borrowed shirt, I stared intently into what I now knew was moonglass. It didn’t seem any different than before. What made it so special?
What did Melody mean when she spoke of the black sail? Were they the pirates that raided Macatania? The ones who killed Amaris in cold blood as she pushed me off a cliff side into the sea?
Why was this ship of sirens—the most powerful creatures in the ocean—sailing on a man made ship across the ocean when they could just swim there? Where were we even going?
And what was this mysterious destination that everyone, Melody included, refused to even speak the name of? Did it have something to do with this seemingly insignificant piece of glass around my neck?
I frowned, folding the artifact under my hands and staring at the ceiling. Yesterday, I would’ve been in Aunt Frenrise’s manor house, thinking about marriage. Was she ok? Or was she dead; killed by the same pirates who had killed my best friend? I squeezed my eyes shut with a whimper. Hopefully Macatania was alright after the attack.
Pursing my lips, someone was walking above nice on the quarterdeck. Probably Neva working the helm. I didn’t like her being so close, but sailing didn’t leave much room for personal space. Inhaling and exhaling again, I let my eyes fall shut for some much needed rest.
— — —
“Girl!”
The shout startled me. Gasping, I choked at the familiar blade once again shoved into my throat. I was still in the Captain’s bed, staring down the curved body of a crescent sword. Neva glared at me, jerking her head. “Up. Now.”
I could only nod, scrambling from the comfortable box which had cradled me. I could still feel the ship rocking as I was shoved out onto the deck, Neva’s sword now shoved into the small of my spine. It was evening now, the sun having and lanterns hanging from the mast posts. Distracted by how beautiful the ship looked at night, I yelped as a boot slammed into the back of my knee, causing it to buckle. Falling to the ground with a wince of pain, I barely had time to react as a heavy bucket of water was practically shoved into my lap.
“Captain’s turning in for tonight, whelp, which means it’s my ship until dawn.” She barked, using her boot to kick a splintering, handheld brush between my folded knees. “Everyone on this ship pulls their weight. We don’t cater to princesses here.” Neva slammed her sword into the deck just short of my bare foot, causing it to spark. “You scrub every part of this deck until I say you’re done. When I release you, you’ll sleep out here tonight—ain’t got no room for warmbloods in the crew quarters. Tomorrow, you’ll wake up early and do it all over again. Clear?”
I blinked at Neva, only to whimper as she slammed her sword near my foot again. “I said, am I clear!”
“Y-yes.”
“Now get to it, you’ve got a long night ahead of you.”
I swallowed thickly, nodding hastily again as I grabbed the brush and dunked it into the bucket. Watching over my shoulder as Neva thundered away, I turned back to my new work and grimaced.
This would be a very long night indeed.

Bandit x Reader: Night Terrors
Trigger Warnings: angst with a happy ending, night terrors, self-hatred, comfort/hurt, mentions of a notorious biker gang, death
Tumblr media
Night terrors were no new thing to Dominic, as he felt he had some sick deal with the Devil after he gave up a part of his soul to stay safe while undercover. The amount of things he did and had to do were the worst you could imagine, and he absolutely hated it. He wished he could make the flooding of those awful memories he sometimes got randomly in the night stop, but he knew he would never get that chance. And once he started dating you, it felt like they only ever got worse and worse. Dominic would always refuse to cuddle you or fall asleep next to you, as his terri’s never really stopped. It was awful, and he didn’t want you to see him like that. You were just a civilian, oblivious to the threats around them, and you never needed to learn of his past double life.
But you insisted, even crying over it because you just wanted to hold him like you had always seen other people hold their partners. And after all that, Dominic caved and decided to let you be with him in his bed for once. The German, who reinforced a wall that was already so impenetrable, let a single butterfly through. You were nuzzled up against him, gently stroking his hair and kissing his neck. Dominic sighed softly, closing his eyes a bit as he began to feel a bit drowsy. “Hey, Dominic?” you ask softly. Regaining his attention, he opened his eyes to look at you, “What is it?” he asked sharply. “Um…I love you…” you say softly. That was the first time either of you ever said those three words to one another at all, and it warmed Dominic’s uneasy heart. He just gave you a slow nod, before then falling asleep.
Dominic, at first, wasn’t restless. His dream, or possible night terror, wasn’t so bad just yet. He saw himself walking down the streets where the Hannover Chapter of the Hells Angels usually met, and he looked down at himself. Dominic was fully dressed in the same attire he usually wore when he was with them, and now he was convinced he was just reliving a memory in his dreamscape. As he walked further and further down the street, he turned to walk into an alleyway and met up with them. It was once he turned the corner where Dominic realized the memory he was currently living.
Dominic was about to kill a man that tried to stop an operation they were doing in the city.
The man in front of him was covered in his own blood, wheezing softly as they held him up. “Finally you’re here! Took you fucking long enough, now hurry up and put this man out of his misery.” one of the men holding him up said. Dominic nodded and walked over to a table nearby, grabbing a gun and loading it. The bloodied man began wheezing more, panicking as he was about to have his life abruptly taken from him by a man who was only doing it to take down this whole operation. Dominic then stood right in front of the man and aimed the pistol right at his face. “P-Please…” the man whimpered, staring up at him with his one good eye.
Dominic sighed and just shook his head, staring down at the man. Though his face was stone cold, his eyes held a pitiful warmth that he’d hoped would guide the man to wherever he would end up. He then clicked off the safety, causing the man to struggle more, then pulled the trigger. Upon the sound of the gunshot ringing out, Dominic woke up and sat up quickly. He put a hand to his chest, panting heavily as he needed to feel like he was himself in his current state. He turned to his side and then saw you staring at him with a worried expression on your face. “Dominic…” you say softly. “I-I’m sorry…I told you this was a bad idea…” Dominic said.
He got himself out of bed and walked towards the kitchen, with you following right behind him. “Dominic, you need to tell me what’s wrong…what did you see in your dreams..?” you ask, grabbing his wrist tightly enough to get him to stop walking, but gently enough to where it was more reassuring. “I…before I joined Rainbow, I was undercover in 2010. I did terrible things in my time, and sure, it got me where I am now, but I wish I never did those things.” Dominic said. “What kind of things..?” you ask softly. “ Anything terrible you could think of, I did most of it.”
Your eyes went wide, but not out of fear, out of pure shock. Dominic was in an organization where that was something he had ti do against enemy forces. But against innocent civilians? You couldn’t even begin to imagine the horrors that plagues his mind. You always had a feeling that the slight goofiness he put up was just a front, and you seemingly found yourself being the one thing that broke through. “You can break up with me if you want, it’s fine…” Dominic suddenly said, breaking the silence between you two. “Dom,” you say, now gently bringing him in for a hug, “I’m not breaking up with you over keeping that a secret. You were doing it to protect me, and I can understand that. But you can’t just bottle your emotions away. We’re partners, we should always be able to tell each other how we’re feeling. I’m not leaving you.”
Dominic sighed, holding onto you tightly. He was shaking like a leaf, terrified of opening up to you about the amount of things he did. “You don’t need to tell me now, but you can tell me when you’re ready. I love you, Dominic.” you reassure, gently rubbing circles into his back. “I love you too, Y/N…I’m so sorry…” he apologized. “Don’t be sorry, you don’t have any reason to be. I would have wished you told me sooner, but things take their time. If anyone should be sorry, it’s me.” you say. Dominic pulled away from your embrace, giving you a confused look, “But why?” he asked. “I was the one who insisted on sleeping next to you.” you say bluntly.
Dominic’s expression softened, bringing a hand up to gently caress your face, “Liebling, don’t worry about all that…you just wanted to spend more time with me a bit more intimately. I should have at least tried a bit more, rather than push you away.” he said. “I just…feel bad about it. Maybe I should’ve been a bit gentler…” you say sheepishly, rubbing the back of your neck. “Well…let me just drink some water before we go back to bed.” Dominic said, now walking away from you so he could get a glass of water. “If you wake up again, please be sure to wake me up as well. I want to help calm you down and comfort you when you have another night terror.” you say.
Dominic gave you a smile after drinking some water, cleaning his cup before then going and giving you a kiss on the forehead. You smiled, and the two of you went back to his room to sleep. Going under the sheets together, you had Dominic actually be the little spoon for once, and gently helped put him to sleep with words of reassurance and kisses. “Ich liebe dich…” Dominic mumbled sleepily. You let out a soft laugh, smiling, “I love you too.” you say, kissing the back of his neck before you both drifted off to sleep.

Rudolf Berthold (Part 2)
On 2nd February 1916 Rudolf Berthold shot down his first victory in a single seater fighter. From then on followed a row of victories until he tested out a new airplane (Pfalz). The motor failed and he crashed to the ground. Berthold lost consciousness for a moment but regained it due to the immense pain he felt. The people coming to his help thought he was dead, but hearing him swear proofed them otherwise: “Er schimpft wieder, er lebt!” (“He is swearing again, he´s alive!”). Despite doctors predicting that he would be blind, he regained his sight while recovering in the hospital; still he was badly injured with a broken thigh, upper leg and nose. During this stay he learned that one of his brothers had died. Learning that he was to be transported to a hospital in Germany Berthold sneaked out with help of his comrades and returned to continue the command of KEK Vaux and in August 1916 he shot down his 6th enemy.
More and more Jagdstaffeln were being established. Buddecke (who had been posted to Turkey over the summer) was given the command of the new Jasta 4, Berthold took care of the preparation. Buddecke recalled at his return to Vaux: “Then I again meet with the incomparable Franconian (his nickname for Berthold). He had been through a lot and after he returned, he had to be hoisted into his plane. But he resumed his duties.”
On the 10th October 1916 Berthold got the Pour le Mérite. For him, to whom duty and service to his country and Kaiser was holy, it was the happiest day.
Tumblr media
At the same time, he was assigned the command of Jasta 14. He was a strict commander who expected his pilots to be as dedicated, aggressive and disregarding of their own lives as he was. Morale was high and got higher when the Staffel got new Albatros D.I and D.II.
The year 1917 came and with it new challenges. The air war had changed, German planes weren´t superior to those of the enemy and the two most successful and famous pilots, Immelmann and Boelcke, were dead. Berthold suggested to his superiors the organization of several Jastas into one big Geschwader. This was met with scepsis and at first nothing happened. Then Jagdgeschwader Richthofen was established. Berthold is angry because he thinks this is not because it was finally understood that big groups under one leader make the most sense but because Richthofen personally is being rewarded. The German army withdrew to the Sigfried line and in March 1917 Jasta 14 was moved to the Aisne sector. Bloody April was in full force and Berthold contributed greatly to the enemy losses when he again suffered a serious injury on 24th April. He was shot through his thigh and he was sent home to Germany until 15th June.
Tumblr media
During his absence Berthold got the impression the area he operated in didn´t provide enough action anymore so he asked to be transferred. A wish that was granted but instead of being able to take the whole Jasta 14 with him, he became commander of Jasta 18 which was stationed in Flanders and provided much better hunting grounds and formidable opponents. He was able to take his comrades and personal friend Josef Veltjens and Walter Dingel with him.  Later on his wish for a bigger formation was granted and he he took command of Jagdgruppe 7 (Jastas 18, 24, 33, 36).
By October 1917 Berthold had shot down 28 enemy aircraft. While shooting down the 29th he himself took a bullet through the right arm which shattered the bone. The wound was complicated and he was send to a hospital in Hannover. His sister Franziska, a nurse in the Viktoria Hospital in Berlin, managed to get him transferred to her care. Four month he had to stay in the hospital with excruciating pain and the arm remained paralysed. Learning that he will lose leadership of his Jasta enraged and motivated him; he learned to use his left hand (he was right handed) so that he could return to flying as soon as possible. His doctors used cocaine to treat his chronic pain (a practice that started to become common, while not being aware of the dangers of the drug). Side effects were bad temper and aggressiveness, something that Berthold had struggled with already. Now these side effects and the subsequent addiction influenced his decisions.
In early 1918 Berthold decided he was done with being injured and away from the front and requested to resume command. Despite his arm wound still not properly healed and his body weakend he returned. His motto: “If I survive I have time to heal after the war is over. If I fall, healing is unnecessary anyway.” In the meantime, a second Jagdgeschwader had been established and Berthold with Jasta 18 put under its control. As he was not yet able to fly, he took care of everything on the ground while Buddecke led in the air.
Tumblr media
Buddeckes role as Bertholds second in command was tragically cut short when he was killed five days after arriving at Jasta 18. Shortly after that Berthold was made leader of JG 2. Not wanting to part with Jasta 18, he exchanged it with Jasta 15 and so stayed with Jasta 18 for the rest of the war.
Despite being forbidden from flying until fully healed, Berthold shot down his next victim. With his arm wound still festering and his right hand lame, he had his mechanics modify the controls of his plane in a way that he could operate it with one arm and if necessary with his teeth. Other pilots reported that they sometimes heard him scream in pain while dogfighting.
May 1918 brought a blow not only to the military but to the whole German nation. Manfred von Richthofen was killed in combat. Rudolf Berthold noted in his diary: “Richthofen has fallen, comrades fall daily, the British have surpassed us. I must show the young boys that duty stands above all else.”
He still had much trouble with his arm. His orderly had to remove bone splinters from the heavily festering wound. Despite being almost constantly in pain as well as suffering from drug addiction he managed to shoot down a further sixteen enemies until August 1918, bringing his tally to 40.
His mental state was suffering greatly, he wrote to his sister: “I have so much worry and trouble. The death of Richthofen has been very depressing. Now I have to move on as one of the old guard. Maybe I will also be killed.”
On 10th August 1918 Rudolf Berthold got up into the air as dedicated and ruthless as always. Doing his duty despite being in severe pain and partially disabled. He shot down his 44th opponent. And his last. After having finished the British bomber plane his own plane was not controllable anymore and plunged to the ground. Miraculously he survived, even with no injuries but his arm being rebroken. In the hospital his conditions worsened and he was sent to Germany and put under the care of his loyal Franziska. His war was over. At least for a short time.
Injuries:
1. broken thigh, upper jaw and nose
2. shot through thigh
3. shot through arm (shattered bone) resulting in a festering wound and a lame hand as well as a subsequent cocaine and morphine addiction

Foals at E-Werk Köln | 21 June 2022
A  very long tale about the day I ended up in Köln instead of Berlin, met the boys at the record shop, got front row spots again and had a quite surreal experience overall.
It's half past six in the morning and I'm sitting on the sofa in an apartment somewhere in the east of Köln. It's a weird feeling to be here all by myself after what has happened in the past 24 hours. But wait, how did I end up in Köln? Shouldn't I have been in Berlin right because of the Aurora concert? Yeah well... about that...
I was supposed to go to Aurora's concert and had booked everything already. The catch was, I had to choose between Aurora and Foals, who somehow managed to be in Germany at the exact same time. I really love Aurora and I'm sad I didn't get to experience her live yesterday.
Rachel (whom I met in Berlin at the Foals concert) has asked me if I'll be in Köln. I told her no, I had other plans. Last weekend there was the Hurricane festival, which I was supposed to attend with Charlotte, but decided against it. Last Friday Foals released their new album and did a small livestream on Instagram – while sitting in Hamburg.
That was the first time I realised I was somehow quite sad, because I ended up crying at the kitchen table after returning from my riding lesson. On top of that, I somehow managed to miss out on both livestreams from Hurricane and Southside. But that alone wouldn't have been enough to change my mind.
A few days ago, a record shop announced there would be a signing session in Köln. Still, I had just met them a few weeks ago. On Sunday noon, I received a message from Mickey, whom I met in Amsterdam. He asked me if I was going to Köln because he has been thinking about going there last minute.
I told him, no, I'm not going, please give the boys my greetings. Then started crying. Now I was unhappy about the prospect of going to Berlin all alone instead of seeing some people again who are actually asking about me
Enter insanity. I told him that I was looking to change my plan. And we started planning out our trip. I don't know which part of this is more insane, maybe you can decide for me:
- Berlin tickets and accommodation are non-refundable, and I am not a millionaire - We have two days until the concert - for some reason (Billie Eilish and Lorde probably) the entirety of Köln is completely booked out, with prices starting from 110 € upwards for any kind of accommodation - this makes it way too expensive for getting a single room, so Mickey and I decided to share - I don’t know him other than having spent a few hours at a concert with him
But of course, why not, right?
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
two days later, at home
Mickey said on Sunday evening, “Yes, let’s go” and I did not know whether to grin like an idiot or panic. So, I first grinned and then spent Monday and Tuesday morning with panicking. Seems fair. I don’t know why anxiety kicked in as much as it did, but it nearly made it impossible to prepare because I was shaking with fear.
I booked my trains and Mickey booked an Airbnb half an hour from the city centre and about the same time from the venue E-Werk. It was the only remotely affordable flat anywhere near we needed to be that did not just have one bed, but also a sofa. Oh well…
On Tuesday morning I was too nervous to eat anything and left the house with a bag of food and fear. In the train I tried to distract myself with Life Is Yours and Everything Everything, hoping that the uplifting music would relax me. That did not really happen.
Tumblr media
At least both the train to and from Hannover were fairly punctual, and so were his trains. Finally in Köln, I discovered that the station in fact has two entrances on the same side. I told Mickey I’d wait in front of Kamps bakery and started scanning the crowd. And what a crowd it was. It seemed like the entire town was up and about.
Then finally, when I already thought we won’t find each other and maybe I don’t remember anymore how he looks like, Mickey suddenly materialised in front of me. I asked myself how I ever thought I won’t recognise him. We both said hi in a rather awkward way and had a moment of doubting whether we should hug but decided to go for it. It was already about 12:40 and we decided to go and look for the Underdog Record Store which was only a few minutes’ walk from the station.
I happily let Mickey navigate (although we made a few wrong turns) and we tried to somehow become more familiar with each other. I remembered him as a very nice person who was pleasant to talk to and this impression was only confirmed. He told me about his university courses and about how exactly he happened to somehow be based in three countries at once. We talked a bit about Foals, but also about how this entire situation is a bit funny.
At some point I joked that my best friend was kind of shocked I was about to just go ahead on a trip with a “friend” I had only known for a few hours, and he laughed about that and said he’ll try to be a good companion.
We arrived at the tiny record shop way ahead of time and discovered they only sell vinyl. There was already a small queue, but we wanted to check out a bakery for food (not tasty enough) and a nearby Saturn for the LIY album. Just as I predicted the CD cost insane 18 €, but I gulped my guilt down and bought one, because it felt odd to arrive without any of their music.

The previous day I had already printed out some photos of the band members for Mickey and bought a strong white cardboard for myself for Yannis to write the lyrics of Mountain at My Gates. I was unsure whether that wouldn’t be too much work, but when we arrived back at the shop and saw Rachel and her friends Lea and Maggie, I saw it was not more work than they had brought.
Lea had a whole assortment of CDs and a big print from ENSWBL 1 deluxe she wanted to get signed. She wore a Pidge t-shirt and turned out to be quite the superfan, despite this being her first Foals concert. That was a good thing, because she craved to be at the barrier, and I knew we would be really late that day. So we were lucky I knew Rachel and could just come and join them later.
Rachel showed us the papaya and lemon she brought for Yannis, and we all burst out laughing, because it was a reference to his tweets about favourite fruit the previous day.
Tumblr media
Speaking of the devil – suddenly a black car with tinted windows pulled up at the store. The door opened – and a very smol and tired Yannis emerged. We stared at him and awkwardly greeted him, and he also said hi to us and proceeded to vanish inside the shop.
Yannis wore his red shirt with flowers that day, together with obligatory black jeans and white shoes. At some point he sat down in the little adjacent café and some woman, who seemed to be part of their team, brought a pile of cards and pencils. It was a bit odd because not only could we see him, but he was also watching us.
The awkwardness was alleviated by Jack suddenly appearing around the corner with his foldable bicycle, stylishly sporting one of Yannis old t-shirts, the grey-white-orange one with circle and spot patterns. He folded the bike and carried it in, greeting us in a good mood. By now it was already 2pm, but Jimmy was not here yet. He came a few minutes later with a woman and we were like “Hi Jimmy! You are late!” and he replied “Yes, I know I know”.
Tumblr media
I was starting to get quite nervous because we were one of the first in line, right after Rachel, Lea and Maggie. We caught a glimpse of Yannis with his papaya and giggled about it, but then it was suddenly our turn. I had joked that Mickey had to go first in case they will eat him alive, but they were in contrary incredibly sweet.
Tumblr media
[x]
Mickey put the photos on the table to sign and they said the photos look really cool and wanted to know where they are from. I said, these are my photos and pointed out which are from Amsterdam and which from Berlin and they complimented me about them. He asked Yannis if they can play his favourite song Exits, but he politely denied, saying that they may play it at a later point. Mickey also asked them to record a small birthday message for his friend Sasha. Jack was the one talking, and the others just chimed in with Happy Birthday.
Tumblr media
Now this was all taking quite a bit of time and their assistant woman (or whoever she was) wanted us to take a photo and move along but I said I still had some things to sign, sorry. The boys were very patient, but this woman clearly was not. Understandably so because there was quite a queue.
I started telling Yannis “Umm, hi I don’t know if you remember me, but we met in Berlin, I was the one who gave you the letter from Nikol.”  And he was like “oh, yes, sure, I remember!” and proceeded to thank her for the letter and the Chili. He said he liked it very much and “it is made of ceramics, right? I wore it a few times, it’s great” and the others also seemed to know what he was talking about. Then he said, without me mentioning it, “and thanks also for the soap, it is really good”. By that time my heart had already melted, to be honest.
I asked them if they could sign the CD for Nikol and they all proceeded to do so, but then Yannis wanted to write her name and asked me “How do you spell that?” and my brain sort of short-circuited and I forgot the alphabet and helpfully said “err, with K”. Thankfully Mickey had not lost his brain and spelled it out for him.
Tumblr media
To the dismay of the woman timekeeper I also asked Yannis very messily with compromised grammar whether he could write the chorus of Mountain at My Gates down for me “because it’s my favourite song and um err I always listen to it when err I- I think I can’t go on anymore and and I would hang it up on my wall and look at it” *facepalm*. Yannis said “yeah sure I’ll do that” but then he realised he did not know the lyrics and was like “umm oh I need to look that up” and I think even had the audacity to say “oh you should know your own lyrics” (while being too star struck to know them myself, mind you) and he apologetically told me about how it was difficult to remember them but how about I just leave the paper here with him and he’ll do it in between and hand it out to me later?
Of course, I agreed with that and was so happy and then we had to take one awkward photo in which I stood next to Jimmy and didn’t know where to turn myself… and then it was over and we went out.
I immediately sent out a voice message to N telling her about the Chili and then took a photo of the signed things. N first did not realise it is a signed CD and thought it is a card, but she was really happy about the news.
Mickey and I waited around for a bit to get the written lyrics. When the woman gave them out to me along with a little card, I couldn’t believe the precious gift I was holding in my hands. That song had really guided me through some heavy things and given me a lot of energy. To have it handwritten by the person who came up with the song in the first place is an invaluable gift.
Tumblr media
We also sent everything to Charlotte, and she started screenshotting it and was excited for us. She did not know we’d be in Köln and so it was a surprise for her. Meanwhile she was already on her way to Glastonbury. Rachel and the girls departed after exchanging approving glances at each other’s signed things.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mickey and I turned to go back to the main station to get some food and get the train to our accommodation. On our way I asked him about his family and about his friend Sasha. Since he is Ukrainian, he had quite some things to tell about how he and his family experience the war. Thankfully they are all alright, although the situation is of course less than ideal.
At the main station Mickey got himself some sandwich and was kind enough to sponsor my vegan couscous. We sat on the steps leading up to the Kölner Dom and talked about work and university, before going in for a quick glance at the Dom. We then took the train with the number eighteen and made our way to the accommodation, which is in a part of the city that reminded us more of a village than a big city.
I was a bit nervous because he was so spontaneous with determining when we had to get out, but he just laughed and told me to relax. Granted, my sixth sense saved us from missing our stop. Still, he was good at navigating, and we made it to the house with the number twelve, located in a quiet street.
After ringing the doorbell once or twice a nice woman opened the door and told us to come in. She asked why we are in the city and we tried to explain in English and German that we were here for Foals and the city is packed because of Billie Eilish and Lorde. She was very nice and showed us to our flat upstairs and explained how the key worked. After introducing us to her sweet black curly dog, we were left on our own.
The flat was quite big, with a corridor, a bathroom to the left, a kitchen straight ahead and a huge living and sleeping room with a wooden balcony. The living room had a huge double bed and a foldable sofa, as well as a dinner table and a TV. The balcony led out into the garden with a view on an idyllic pond. To be honest, if it had not been for the price, I’d stayed in this flat for much longer than one night.
We freshened up a bit, re-packed our bags and headed out to catch the train to E-Werk. It was around 4:30 pm by now and I was nervous about the state of the queue waiting for us, although I knew Lea was already there. The train took its sweet time to arrive and we had to catch a bus after.
By now all nervousness had disappeared and I was just happy to have a companion with me. He told really funny stories, like the one about his colleague telling the waiter in the restaurant “Ich warte!” in an attempt to practice his German. Mickey himself has quite impressive German skills although he claimed that Dutch has ruined his pronunciation (which was nearly perfect the whole time).
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
We finally arrived at the venue with the bus, together with another dude wearing a Black Bull t-shirt. Apparently the bus stop is just in front of E-Werk. Me wanting to be at E-Werk for Coldplay in 2014 made me think it’d be a beautiful venue, but it really was quite small and shabby-looking with huge windows.
Said windows were almost shattering from the sound of Egyptian Blue soundchecking. Thankfully Rachel and the others were already there and I also saw the guy from Berlin with the Inhaler t-shirt (and again I managed to not ask his name, goddamn me, I am hopeless). He was wearing a Foals t-shirt today though and sat next to us all on the steps.
We had to admit Egyptian Blue sounded better from the outside than the inside of the venue and joked we’d just stay out here until they were done. Suddenly we noticed Jack behind the bushes next to the tour bus inconveniently parked in plain sight. He was talking to the guy in the Black Bull t-shirt, who had told us earlier that he missed the signing session. I guess he wanted a private signing session now, but security dared to disagree and sent him out.
We did not remain seated quietly for long, though, because N sent me a tweet with the coordinates of a hidden vinyl. Mickey and I got up and running down the street in an attempt to get there first – too late! Only minutes after the tweet the vinyl had already found a new owner. It was great fun though running down the street and giggling, not caring what people thought about us.
Tumblr media
By now it was almost half past six, nearly time for doors to open. Security took care to make rows and more and more people appeared, making us glad that we had a good spot. Mickey still needed to send me my ticket which he had gotten from Ticketswap.
And then it was time. Thankfully nothing happened, the tickets were valid, no questions about my bag… and Rachel did not even have to lie down on the floor like Charlotte to secure our spot. Again a perfect spot, right where Yannis would be!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The only thing was that this time I was sandwiched between Mickey and the huge Berlin guy (I swear next time I’ll ask his name). But I tried to see the positive sides: with such strong guys next to me it was certain Yannis would come here for What Went Down. If only security had been this strong too… but more of that in time.
Now it was waiting time again. When Mickey went to the bathroom, some drunk guy from the back already wanted to steal his place, claiming he “just had to touch the barrier once to see how it feels”. Like dude… no. Touch it after the concert is over. We met Paula, who brought a bouquet of pink roses to the concert.
We were all very “enthusiastic” about Egyptian Blue who played as bashingly loud and bad as usually. But thank God that was over soon. And then they started to build up the Foals stage! Yannis microphone was set up right in front of my nose, a bit too much in front of me for my taste because I knew it’d be in the way all the time.
Mickey noticed that there appeared to be no screen this time – just a black huge banner that reminded us of something we could not point our finger at. We engaged N as a detective and found out it resembled the pattern on the black LIY vinyl. I prayed that the light would be good enough for photos.
And suddenly, shockingly on time, Foals appeared onstage with the known intro music and Wake Me Up. Yannis was really right in front of me again and had made the effort to change into another shirt (actually one of my faves). I felt like I overdosed with Foals in the last month, because not only was this the third concert but I also spoke to him twice. This all felt too unreal to be true.
Tumblr media
He was in a good vocal shape, but somehow the vibe was different from Berlin and Amsterdam. They seemed to be a bit tired, although they tried to play a good energetic show. I remembered my purpose of a photographer and started testing out my new prism, to the surprise of and displeasure of the security guy in front of me. Well, I know it looks weird, but the results are worth it, man… and if even Foals say the photos are good…
At first the setlist had no surprises, only when they got to Looking High, we all got excited because that was a rare one. They had last played it in the UK, and only four times. Mickey was already sad because he thought they scrapped Life Is Yours, but to his surprise they played it right after.
Tumblr media
I found the crowd to be more drunk but less enthusisastic than in Berlin and I missed Camille and Charlotte for the In Degrees jumping marathon and “Brighton Rock!” yelling. I think they should play Spanish Sahara right after in Degrees so we can all have a rest on the Floor, to be honest.
Yannis was a bit forgetful that day (although not with the Mountain at My Gates chorus, bless). He messed up the beginning of Looking High, and I have heard better performances of Inhaler. However he said “Dankeschön” in a very sweet way even twice, so my heart melted anyway. I will miss him a lot, because that was definitely the last concert of the year. I hope I can memorise how wonderful it is to have a whole concert (or three) to just see all with my own eyes and even speak to him on multiple occasions.
He came down to the crowd for Providence, but I did not catch his hand this time, only his shoulder on the way back (green shirt still leads in terms of softness, but this dotted one is a close second!). During the Encore break I told Mickey that we really need to go and get some food and drink after, because I felt really weak. No surprise in that.
Tumblr media
They came back to play Black Bull and then – What Went Down. Now was the chance. We gave everything and hoped he would come to us. He gave away his guitar, climbed down and got up right to us. I thought this is too good to be true, and truly, it was: he decided not to climb up on the barrier today. I suspect, maybe he was being tired but also security stood there like it was their first day on the job and showed no signs of wanting to help him get up.
I can’t blame him for not doing it, but I was a bit sad still. He briefly went to the spot where Rachel and Lea stood, but then he climbed back up on stage. During Two Steps I already noticed just how exhausted I was. And then, suddenly it was over, and they disappeared.
We had no luck with setlists, drumsticks or plecs and they closed the stage area really quickly. I noticed that the entire right side of my T-Shirt was completely soaked in sweat, and it was not my own. My jacket, meanwhile, was safely waiting for me at home… We briefly said goodbye to our friends and then Mickey and I quickly got out to catch the bus.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Somehow the rest of the evening added to the sense of all of this being completely unreal, like a glimpse of stolen life. I am well aware that many people do things like this on a regular basis and it is no big deal to go to a concert last minute in another city and meet new people and hang out with them.
However, for a home-sitting lonely introvert like me this is really far away from my usual life and still causes me to have some feeling as if everything is just another story I made up in my mind.
At the train station all food shops except one lonely Rewe were closed, so we went to get some shockingly healthy food (“let’s get Papaya with lemon”) and ended up with yoghurt, cereal, apples, wraps, a big bottle of sparkling apple juice (sadly no Sprite, sorry). We somehow forgot how thirsty we were and did not think of buying two bottles, so we shared ours while waiting for the train.
In the train we reviewed the setlist (Mickey was actually the one who created the concert date on setlist.fm) and realised they left out Late Night and Black Gold in favour of new songs. Then we arrived in our “village”. It was dark and I had no idea where we were going. Normally I’d be in panic in this situation, but oddly I felt very safe and incredibly happy in that moment.
We quietly snuck into the flat to not wake the owners downstairs. After eating and washing we talked for a while and it was sad he had to wake up so early next morning to go back, because late night talks are the most interesting. But it was already late, and we had to sleep.
I fell asleep and woke up startled by something when it was already morning. I turned around to find Mickey standing right next to me. I managed to say “oh my god”, and probably scared the hell out of him with my reaction because he asked “Are you ok?”. We had an awkward moment and finally managed to say “…good morning?”.
The goodbye was just as awkward as our greeting less than 24 hours earlier. We first stood a few metres apart and he was not sure about going for a hug or not. He told me to write to him when I was safe at home and suddenly I was all alone.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
I needed an hour to somehow get myself together enough to function again. I ate up, packed and dressed and left the flat after 7:45 to get a train to the botanical garden.
Tumblr media
I think it is almost a tradition for me to visit the botanical garden in each city after a concert. There is something meditative and soothing about them, I thought, wandering through the Flora next to Köln Zoo.
Tumblr media
Nobody was here yet except for some runners. I had all the time in the world to take as many photos as I wanted and calm down my hopeless brain. Amongst the roses and pink flowers I thought that this would be something Yannis enjoys: first a crazy concert and then the garden.
Tumblr media
Afterwards I headed back to the main station in hope of visiting some museums. But the city center is not a welcoming place early in the morning. Most shops are closed and all the construction sites did not help with navigation.
The museums started scaring me, so I thought, “screw this2 and wanted to go to another park. But first I had a whole odyssey trying to find affordable vegan food (which turned out to be disgusting, sadly). In the park I sat down on a bench near the big pond to eat and write to N. By that time it was really hot already. I managed to get lost with google maps and eventually settled under the shade of a big tree.
Tumblr media
There I found a four leafed clover which I showed to N and to Mickey, who did not know the concept of them as lucky charms. A mail reached me: my green patterned shirt had arrived, and I would be able to pick it up soon.
Tumblr media
Then it was already time to go back to the station and catch the ICE to Hannover. The train was very full, and the air was thick. I originally wanted to write down my adventures but found myself almost sleeping instead. Even worse, we were significantly delayed, and I missed my second ICE  by a minute. That meant I had an odyssey with two Metronom trains until I finally arrived in my home town, exhausted and ready to just eat and sleep.
It has been two days now and I still feel like it was all a fever dream, even as I sit on the sofa and look at the photos I took. Not entirely sure how any of this qualifies as a travel or concert diary still, but it sure as hell is a lot of reading material to remember.
