Hey anon. So, I’m not really sure why you’re asking me, a turtle blog this (/LH), but it seems like you have genuine questions, so I’ll try to give genuine answers.

As for your first question, I would give a very strong yes. That is wrong. Making a sona that represents you, and changing the skin tone to black, when in fact, you are not a person of color, is not an okay thing to do. Even if you think you have only good intentions, and don’t believe this change carries much meaning. There have been cases in the past of people in fandoms lying about their race to excuse bad takes, conduct, and basically trying to garner false sympathy. It’s always best to just be honest. Still, there is lying, and then there is being creative. If you’d like to make a fantastical sona, and have them be some type of fun looking fantasy character/creature, that is one thing. That has no real world implications behind the design. Go for that! My sona is a green and yellow frog demon thing! It’s fun to go crazy with it!

As for covering your face with like….say a black box, like a censor bar. That is not the same thing as black face, if I’m understanding your second question correctly? The whole body thing seems excessive, when just covering your face with a bar will do, however…

I’m really not trying to be rude, but from your questions and concerns I can’t help but think you sound rather young. So my actual advice would be to just not show your face at all. If you are this unsure, and if you don’t really trust the people who would be seeing your face, then you shouldn’t be sharing it in the first place. I know our social media culture today doesn’t put a lot of emphasis on internet safety, but there’s really no reason you need to be showing what you look like to the internet. If you want to make a Sona to represent you, that’s totally something you can do, but maybe you should hold off on sharing real pics of yourself.

What would be your favourite non-replica phantom looks? From both POTO and LND.

...how much time do you have...?! For the sake of the length of this post and its photo limit I will stick to POTO only, and mainly from official photos. Here goes...

I think the Hungarian production - the very first non-replica production - did a lot right. If the costumes more closely reflected on Nelly Vágó's sketches instead of doing a bit too light and synthetic-looking fabrics, it could have been the ultimate non-replica productions. The sets by Kentaur in particular is gorgeous. Some favourites is:

Red Death's "festering ribs and skull" costume:

The Mausoleum set with graves and a moving moon:

I like that this production is moody, beautiful and very Phantomesque. I also love that they stick to the Palais Garnier, but include different views than Maria Bjørnson did in the original production. It kinda fills out her vision.

In the Polish production I adore the chandelier - both its overall look, and its crash:

I am also a fan of the larger-than-life sets with grand details by Pawel Dobrzycki. For example Christine's extremely spacy dressing room with a hint of the opera's interior in the background:

The Phantom's steampunk organ with sculptures:

And the opulent office of the managers:

For the Restaged Tour, I am not the biggest fan of the slightly limiting drum set that Paul Brown made the main design. But I do like the set design when it frees itself from it and expands. For example, I love the cobweb auction scene with all the items on display:

The Apollo's lyre in the Rooftop is wonderfully moody - but I also think they owe a lot to Hungary for this visual:

What else... I am not gaga about the overall set design in the Czech production, but I do love a lot of the costumes and details by Roman Šolc. For example the absolutely over-the-top opulent Hannibal costumes, and especially the Elissa costumes:

I love the very recognizable and traditional look of the lair costumes, wigs and mask. It screams POTO:

I also think the burning letter and the look of the Girys in the managers scene is a great visual. And I am an absolute sucker for Meg's updo:

I furthermore appreciate that this production is one of few non-replica productions to give Christine a wedding dress in the Final Lair (and it looks very nice):

Albeit there is a lot of positive things to be said about the original Romanian production, I do think its pimped incarnation opening in Norway in 2018 and then touring Greece, the Middle East and then Europe has more beauty and more sass. Though maybe even more in the sets than in the costumes. Both were designed by Andrew Riley. I love the ever-looming proscenium and chandelier, and the light in the boxes living its own life when the Phantom is out and about. Oh, and the "jellyfish" chandelier drape! It is sorely missed, it was only done in Norway due to the theatre's construction, allowing a stagehand to stand above the chandelier and pull it off:

Also a fantastic lair set, with its "torn" grotto look and the giant organ, surrounded by "water":

The mirrored hall in Masquerade was a lovely sight:

And Red Death getting the whole goddamn backwall to move, while the fireplace burns and he is dressed as Mephisto. Gotta love it!

From the production in Kristianstad, Sweden I still think about that boat scene. I wish I had even better photos of it, but long story short: Starting with a gate and a misty floor, with two pairs of leads mirroring eachother movements so it looked like they were in opposite worlds:

Then a boat consisting of a gate structure raising from the floor - nothing more, nothing less - with everything else moving so it got a dream-like look:

OH! And Sydney Harbour, with costumes and sets designed by Gabriela Tylesova. Oh my. The first grand outdoor production of POTO. What I loved about the set design is that it seemed to take Maria Bjørnson's idea, tretch it, amplify it and... bam! Proscenium, chandelier, grand staircase, lair, all in one.

I loved many, many of the costumes, but an extra shout-out to the Hannibal costumes. Epic. Come sun or rain.

And endless love for Raoul's blue Hussar costume!

For the new Romanian production with design by Gary McCann I do feel the overall design is a bit overpowering. But I do adore that chandelier with sculptures.

The graveyard scene also looks fascinating:

And last, but not least... the Mediterranean version, with costume design by Chiara Donato and sets by Clara Abbruzzese. I love the strong Victorian flair, and the strong POTO vibes. The main set, with its fixed boxes/proscenium and chandelier can be changed rapidly by changing the backdrop, as seen in for example Hannibal VS Primadonna:

It's a gorgeous main set. But I also loved when they abandoned it for the lair set and this came to view - labyrinths, arches, candles, ropes, a boat, and a large candle-lit organ:

And as a very last comment and photo, I love how this production too stick to the well-established POTO look for the lair, down to white dressing gown and MOTN pose.

I could have added SO much more... there is a lot of stunning sets and costumes to be found, and clever solutions to iconic scenes. But these are the ones that came to mind :)

it’s so bizarre to me that you never, EVER reblog or post anything about transmisogyny or the transfem experience. like, can you even recommend any transfem-centric blogs for me to follow? for someone so into “solidarity” your trans activism seems pretty focused on trans men only

So there are multiple things going on with this ask.

As I've explained several times before - I don't necessarily blame you for not seeing it, but I have - most social issues give me panic attacks to contemplate. The thing I mentioned triggered me so badly yesterday was something in the transmisogyny tag that wasn't tagged with anything I had blacklisted (not that OP's fault, I added more variations of transphobia warnings so it hopefully won't happen again).

Intercommunity issues are less existential. Things like hate crimes and legislative assaults on queer people freak me out and leave me a shaking, crying, doomscrolling mess. I don't even follow like, literally any of the people who followed me for transandrophobia advocacy because they reblog other things that gives me heart palpitations.

That limits my exposure to intercommunity issues facing transfems specifically as well, the vast majority of people I follow don't put any discourse on my dash at all. However, I have in fact reblogged posts purely about transmisogyny (other than the kind transandrophobes throw at me lol) only to immediately delete them when I see the OP is vile towards transmascs in other posts, completely spoling the message. At least one was even specifically about ways transmascs can be transmisogynistic, which I thought was a fair enough criticism before realizing it was at best one good point in a sea of bullshit directed at our trans brothers. Another time I specifically asked someone how they felt about trasnmascs before I reblogged their very good post about transmisogyny and was delighted when they gave a fantastic response.

Furthermore, I do actually just speak on pure transmisogyny myself sometimes! I talked at length about the immense pain it caused me realizing Alison Bechdel was TERFier than I thought in a way that completely contradicts the strip that made me cry out of appreciation for her. Recently, I've also been talking a lot about the ways butch transfems are treated for not looking cis.

Do I mention these things less than transandrophobia and other issues that affect people other than transfems? Sure. But like...so what? I like doing things for other people.

I don't mean to act like I'm some kinna savior or anything, but as I said just yesterday, helping people outside of your own issues is something I'm kinna obsessed with not just in myself but others too. I'm constantly stressing how cis allies should be appreciated e.g. my previous feelings about Bechdel, and despite how she turned out I still firmly believe that cis allies should be treasured. I've donated money to multiple cis allies to say thanks for their statements.

It's not like I'm just so saintly selfless or anything like that, I'm very self-centered, it's just that being an ally to [x], [x] being allies to me, and [x] being allies to [y] who have nothing to do with me is not only a rare area of activism I can function in, it's one that actively brings me joy. This includes having sent multiple messages to transmascs thanking them when they speak up about transmisogyny, because I want to show them the love so many of them have shown me for the same thing.

Finally, you say my trans activism is focused on trans men. Maybe so, by volume. But, and I've mentioned this before, I've been wanting to do more for everyone else as well, literally everyone. I've asked a bit about intersex issues and am trying to learn more about what non-binary people who don't lean to one end or the other deal with as well, and I also want all my cis followers to feel just as comfortable and supported by me as well - and, of course, that all goes for other transfems as well, whose pain cuts me to the bone.

I'm radically pro-everyone, anon, and I want to help uplift them all without exception. I understand focusing on one's own lane, and I neither judge that nor am attempting to portray myself as a uniquely noble white knight. That's just what I personally choose to put my efforts towards.

That Thompson quote in the previous post is more contextual than the typical response lets on - it was made in 1972. Elections were just a *lot* swingier back then. Its exaggerated - you see things like Reagan's electoral victory in 1980:

Which seems like a devastating win, but he only got 50.7% of the vote, Carter got 41.0% (and independent John Anderson got ~6), the shifts were just broadly distributed. Still, its definitely more swing than you see today. Politics was less sticky, outcomes more surprising.

There are a million reasons for that but one of them was certainly that information was more centralized. If you had a political opinion and you weren't a political insider or some kind of radical, you got the news for your opinion from hierarchical information sources; newspapers, television, connected political groups. In this environment the idea that you could just get some with charisma and new ideas to sweep the electorate and authentically change minds wasn't that fantastical. You don't have to play to the median, people's median isn't that settled, you can pitch another way and create a new median. And if you can get a short-list of organizations to agree with you they will cooperate in broadcasting that new idea.

This is the idea someone like Thompson has; it seemed to him like the "center" was defining the median for voters, and people occasionally did come along and shift what the center was about in new directions. So his agenda could have its turn under the sun, that was possible. Particularly in 1972, with the counterculture movement fading sure but still very recent in memory, that seems like a viable idea, even if yeah overstated (oh, a writer, overly focused on the role of media and media figures? Shock!)

Its pretty dead-in-the-water today. The idea that politicians or even presidents get to "set the national priorities" is antiquated - no one cares what they think. The information environment is much flatter, there is scant ways for a politician to tell voters to stop caring about immigration or healthcare and start caring about national defense or w/e. The electorate is more partisan, more confident, and more bottom-up in how it forms opinions. While presidents can highlight *new* issues and sometimes raise them to prominence, they really can't change minds much. Honestly its a wonder campaigning does anything at all!

Of course this is papering over the complexity of today as well, but overall its just a bad political environment for this whole idea of running someone outside the median who like radically changes things via the process of running for that election. They are probably just going to lose, and almost certainly won't get congressional majorities. You gotta pursue other strategies for change.

#And imo the Biden admin has been a pretty decent example of such a strategy!

FIC REC WEEK 23 – POST-CA:CW

AUTHOR SPOTLIGHT: sheron

The thing I love most about sheron's fics – other than the amazing characterization, fantastic dialogue and pacing – is how most of the emotional journey of these characters happens between the lines. It's a really subtle and beautiful way of writing that I enjoy to no end, especially in their Post-Civil War fics. And I am really impressed by the way they manage to juggle the hurt feelings on all sides without it ever turning into something vicious or mean. All the characters are redeemable and sympathetic, and I adore that.

Pairing: Steve/Tony Rating: G Words: 3,996 Tags: Emotional Hurt/Comfort, Fluff and Angst, First Kiss

Summary: The Avengers (and ex-Avengers) are forced to socialize at a PR event. Why is there never a monster around to attack New York when you need one?

Reasons why I love it: The team dynamics in this one are absolutely flawless. I love how potent the still lingering hurt is, and how it manifests itself in each interaction. And of course, the Stony is immaculate – I especially love the glass breaking scene, it feels so symbolic and true to their characters. I love this fic to death, and I bet you will too!

Better in Time

Pairing: Steve/Tony Rating: G Words: 6,498 Tags: Presumed Dead, Emotional Hurt/Comfort, Reconciliation

Summary: Tony doesn't call until there's live footage of Steve going down in a hail of bullets. Steve misses his call.

Reasons why I love it: Yes, yes, yes, YES, everything about this is yes! Near death experiences bringing MCU Avengers closer together since 2012, I love it! sheron writes them so well, I will never not gush about their characterizations, and this one especially just makes me so happy. I love this fic, and you should definitely read it, if you haven't already!

Summary: There's been a break-in at his private workshop. "The access was through the authorization code of Captain Rogers," FRIDAY says and Tony can't breathe.

Reasons why I love it: Aaaah, this one hurts so good! I can absolutely see how Tony arrived at his conclusion, and it's so painful to see how much it hurts both of them when he asks the question. The angst is superb, and the moment of forgiveness is made all the sweeter for it. I love this one so much, you absolutely have to read it!

North (Northwest to Nowhere Remix)

Pairing: Steve/Tony Rating: G Words: 7,100 Tags: Hurt/Comfort, Pre-Slash, Hurt Steve

Summary: Steve and Tony end up lost in the middle of nowhere, and Steve is struggling with an injury he received during their escape from AIM. What else could possibly go wrong? Unsurprisingly: a lot.

Reasons why I love it: Tony has fallen so deeply for Steve that he can't get up, and Steve is a self-sacrifing idiot, but what else is new? I love the hurt/comfort in this, and Steve and Tony being protective of each other is always lovely to see, especially when it's as well-written as this. I love this fic, and I bet you will too!

Exit Wounds (The No Exit Remix)

Pairing: Steve/Tony Rating: G Words: 2,375 Tags: Hurt Steve, Protective Tony, Hopeful Ending

Summary: Tony gets trapped together with Steve in a collapsed HYDRA facility, which makes it hard to avoid him.

Reasons why I love it: This fic gives me that really satisfying feeling of finally getting at an itch that's been bothering you for hours. It feels long-overdue, and I love the way sheron characterizes them here, both still so hurt and yet willing to overcome their differences. This fic is wonderful, and I highly recommend it, if you haven't read it already!

Aight so while I’ve been very inactive, did see a thing on the dash and I would like to make something very clear: 

FGO COMPLETELY bastardized Jannu’s character.

It’s seen pretty explicitly in Apocrypha that Jannu not only NEVER considered herself a saint (She outright states “Everyone but me thinks that I am a saint”), was not all-forgiving and merciful, and will also feel guilt despite doing what she thinks is right (see Jack), was not above talking down to people and talking trash (See Atalanta), and above all: She considered herself a soldier not a saint. and has never seen her hands to be clean of blood. Hell, early in the novels--Jannu is literally washing blood of her hands because she beat the living shit out of some punks who were starting trouble in town, a trait that historically was pretty true given one of the stories about her. 

There is a scene that greatly sums up a great deal of Jeanne’s views, and it is the scene of when Shakespeare utilized his Noble Phantasm to make her relive the horrors of her life. When speaking with Gilles, she makes it VERY explicitly clear to him: “God will always forgive you of your sins, but people do not necessarily have to.” She has made a very clear boundary between the magnanimity of heaven as well as the feelings of humans because these are two very different things, and this applies to her as well.

Yes, she has spoken that she has no regrets (That’s in part a lie, but we can very clearly see that.), and yes, she has an astounding amount of resolution--But that isn’t something that I would necessarily surmise as just her ‘being a saint, that is her strength as a person. 

Jalter is not a fake, but Jeanne isn’t either.

[Ep. 16] The Beach Episode Spa Arc

Well… I can’t argue with the numbers. I was going to give Julesx2 the chance to stay if their relationships with each other weren’t higher than their bars with Daniel: but lo and behold, these two have been building up their relationship more than I thought!

Being in control of Dan alone has its perks, but it also means I rarely ever see the relationships the contestants are building with each other - I knew these two spent a lot of time together, but damn! By the time this happened with Daniel literally just upstairs, it seems like Julien and Julian have found their perfect match: while it isn’t with our Bachelor, I think we should be happy for them regardless! 🥹

reread the rest thus far of lackadaisy and there's the both v easy & difficult task of gathering a shit ton but only a shit ton of excerpts (like every single page is a highlight i'm not exaggerating)

and every single element is superlative and the way it all only becomes More So....already mentioned the way the like smooth gradient shading made the successful evocation of 3D Shapes more noticeable, along w/the consistent geometries of character design & details in fabric folds; the way Lighting & Coloring only goes on to become more prominent elements only enhances that further. the compositions, backgrounds, pacing, angles....everything is so dynamic & expressive, such as including the expressions which you know i also Love / absorbed

going "hell yes for people to discover this superlative comic" then having to occasionally refresh past site traffic overloaded server errors like "nooo" but actually yes

whilest clapping & cheering for the fun of everyone who's been here a minute.
