last night before falling asleep I had the most soul crushing thought any Sophitz shipper could have.

We could’ve had a pride and prejudice type of romance between Sophie and fitz.

We could’ve had a Darcy and Elizabeth.

Fitzwilliam Darcy whose name is shared with Fitz.

Elizabeth Bennet aka Sophie Elizabeth Foster.

We could’ve had Sophie mentally adjust to the lavish and, quite honestly, insane wealth the elves live in. This compared to her previous life in San Diego would’ve paralleled Elizabeth’s family’s and occasionally her sense of inadequacy by being at the lower ends of high society; just blending in with the members of the high ranks yet being set apart as well (a lot of people refusing to accept Sophie as a normal elf and a lot of hatred towards her for just existing. Vs. Elizabeth Bennet and being targeted by Lady Catherine de Bourgh). We could’ve had some imposter syndrome in the beginning but pushed into the background of Sophie’s mind as it turned into confidence with her handful of abilities and position on Team Valiant. Also if she played more into the role of Elizabeth she’d be a lot wittier and take less bullshit. The whole love triangle would’ve been solved because she addressed it. The neverseen probably would’ve been done by now because as empathetic and kind as she is, (this is more me than Elizabeth talking) she would’ve snapped. Also she’d talk without thinking, often putting the honest out into the world, forcing people to address it.

Fitz could’ve been an asshole in the first few books (which he was but I just don’t remember how). Well, an asshole from Sophie’s point of view. But if any other characters chimed in, they’d comment on his kindness and generosity. We could’ve seen Fitz painstakingly trying to get to know Sophie better through their cognate training, both of them wondering how they even became cognates, and Sophie just refusing to comply because of her pride and prejudice ;). We could’ve seen Fitz evolve from Mr. Perfect who would’ve been stubborn and quite condescending, to his ‘hidden’ kind and patient side (he’s just awkward and doesn’t know how to interact with Sophie), to his much more mature and responsible side. He could’ve had so much character growth, turning into a teenager who recognized the flaws in his idealized society and tried to make his world better, recognizing the extreme prestige and privilege he has. Him letting go of his pride to make deeper connections with people he cares about, and stepping away from his reputation. Recognizing that his prejudice is what is stopping him from being comfortable with himself and others.

We could’ve had the confession scene be from Fitz about the matchmaking but much more tense and dramatic. The juxtaposition between their close body language and harsh words. A rejection from Sophie because: why would she like a guy who ripped her away to a world that hates her even more? How arrogant could he be to believe that she would like him back? Why should she even consider it if he admitted to liking her against his better judgement?? Fitz asking her out on a date through that confession and Sophie tearing him and his preconception of their world apart. Her pride being hurt, only reenforcing the prejudice she hold against him. Fitz apologizing and recognizing that he needs to change. Sophie regretting her intense words but knowing that he needed a wake up call.

We could’ve had such a beautiful arc of one sided dislike (Sophie) and haughty awkwardness (fitz) to, hatred hiding away guilt and possible affection (Sophie) and regret and change and kindness (fitz) where they grow to be close and somewhat friends but haven’t gone over the obstacle of their egos and judgements. Ending with “im sorry I assumed so much about you based on first impressions and your background, my ego got in the way and I was wrong about you. I hated you because you made me face a part of me that I wanted to push away but it was hurting me in the process. I don’t actually hate you, in fact, I like your company and you make me a better person. I should’ve been honest with you and myself from the beginning.”

Although, it retrospect it would’ve been a bit difficult to juggle this in alongside a love triangle, an anti-establishment group, another anti-establishment group, fantasy creatures, school, a shitty government and so many characters (the council, the parents, the Collective, the teens, the bodyguards, the alicorns, the villains, and all the plotholes in between). However, I say if the love triangle was never established in the first place, we could’ve had some room for this, especially over the course of nine 800 paged books.

Jack : So..North...Hypothetically speaking...

North : *sighs* What did you do now?(⁠눈⁠‸⁠눈⁠)

Jack : *scoffs* Why do you always thing I'm always 'Up to Something'?! (ಠ⁠︵⁠ಠ)

North : Because you are (⁠눈⁠‸⁠눈⁠)

Jack : *gasps* I-I'll pretend I didn't hear that.. Anyway, so hypothetically speaking... What if... Remember I'm just being "hypothetical"... What if a guardian finds a child that can use and manipulate magic as well? And knows everything about everyone and everything that happened..?

North: ...

Jack : ...?

North : That hasn't happened...yet. Why do you ask? *raises eyebrow*

Jack : Erm...I, you know...Had a dream that uh- Jamie!Yeah Jamie was using snow like me! YEAH!

A poignant interview where he admits his favourite scenes were when he was with lots of other actors coz he was stuck in a hotel room all on his own.

He must have felt so lonely away from family and isolated for 7 months 😭😭 I really admire his resilience and work ethic. And all the sacrifices he made paid off - Bob is a masterpiece!! (An award would have been very nice and richly deserved, but let's not go there 🤬🤬).

I love Goodey's reaction to being told that someone at Paramount said he was the breakout star of the show.

"I don't know who I paid to do that but I am very thrilled. Breakout at 44 as well, that's great. I'll take it! You play in enough traffic, you are going to get hit at some point."

Mmmh, It's not like Matthew not to take a compliment 🤦🏻‍♀️ But I love his modesty.

This is perhaps a silly question but did couples in Jane Austen's time always refer to each other by Mr./Mrs. Lastname? It's something I noticed with all of them (even Mrs. Elliot who is very liberal in that regard, much to Emma's dismay). And it's not just in company either, Mrs. Bennet does it in front of their daughters and Lady Bertram when she's alone with Sir Thomas. It just seems very cold and distant in modern times.

Yes, it does feel weird to us and yes that appears to be what they do. In addition, many of the children call their parents "sir" and "ma'am". This is a much more formal society. I would feel just as weird calling someone my own age “Miss Lastname”! However, I know a lot of couples who refer to themselves and their spouses as "Mom" and "Dad" instead of their actual names in front of their kids, so it’s not totally divorced from our society now.

Anyway, one of the reasons we don't know a lot of first names of parents is because they only call each other Mr. and Mrs. Lastname. The exceptions are Admiral Croft, who calls his wife Sophy (her name is Sophia) and Mary and Charles Musgrove. John Mullen argued in his book What Matters in Jane Austen that this shows the contempt that M&C have for each other, but they are almost always among family and they are the same generation as Anne, so that might be why they use their first names. Mrs. Croft never calls Admiral Croft his first name back, by the way.

There also may have been a change in manners between the earlier and later novels. We hear women call men “Lastname” in S&S and P&P, but not in the later novels, then only men use that short form. Emma is highly offended that Mrs. Elton would say “Knightley”, though that may have more to do with their recent intimacy than a social rule, and Mrs. Elton does always refer to her husband as “Mr.” even if she shortens his last name into “E.”

What I find very interesting is that if you pay attention to when Mr., Mrs., Miss, and names are used, you can see how one character thinks of another. Fanny Price always thinks of Mr. and Miss Crawford, never Henry and Mary, even when other characters become less formal around them. When Elizabeth talks to Wickham (post-marriage to Lydia), Wickham uses the informal “Darcy” but all Elizabeth’s thoughts use the formal “Mr. Darcy”. Mr. Bingley is just referred to as “Bingley” about 50% of the time, but “Darcy” only about 30%. This probably has to do with the characters disliking him, but also with his station in society. Even the narrator is respectful!

Which is why I actually love the formal names/Christian names dynamic because you can get so much information just by how people refer to each other. Charlotte Lucas, Elizabeth’s friend, calls her “Eliza” and we can understand this as a representation of their intimacy. Yet when Caroline calls Elizabeth, “Miss Eliza”, it is rude, she hasn’t earned the privilege of a nickname. Similarly, Mary Crawford calling Miss Price “Fanny” before she is actually engaged to Henry is too much too soon, especially since Fanny has not extended this right in friendship.

And when Wentworth says, “but if Anne will stay, no one so proper, so capable as Anne.” It’s not just the praise, he says her first name. It is a sign, on second reading, that his feelings for her have returned.

Last note, given how formal Mr. Darcy is and how respectfully Elizabeth refers to him even when they are engaged, they are calling each other Mr. and Mrs. Darcy everywhere except the bedroom! At least that's what I suspect.

I’ve been thinking of a Muppet adaptation of Pride and Prejudice. And there’s really only one way I see it going. Gonzo would narrate in character as Jane Austen the same way he did as Charles Dickens.

Piggy would insist on playing Lizzie and would be thrilled that Darcy is played be a handsome English actor. Let’s say Josh O’Conner, who plays the role like it’s a Merchant Ivory production instead of a Muppet movie. Piggy is over the moon that she finally starring in a “quality picture.”

Most of the rest of the cast is Muppets. The lack of major female coded characters is mostly ignored, just slotting the best or funniest option for the part. Beaker is Mr. Bennet, constantly roped into being a test subject for Bunson as Mrs. Bennet’s elaborate Rube Goldberg devices to catch husbands for their daughters, Sam the Eagle is Mr Collins. Statler and Waldorf are twin sisters Lady Catherine and Kathleen DeBourgh. Fozzie is Mary but instead of the piano he’s forcing everyone to listen to his standup. Link Hogthrob is Wickham who has to be dragged to elope by Pepe the prawn as Lydia.

And Kermit, sweet affable, Kermit, is of course Mr. Bingley. Piggy is happy to gush to him about Joshiepoo/Darcykins and how wonderful it is to be in a classic romance with such a handsome leading man. And she’s delighted when Kermit appears a tiny bit jealous.

The movie starts as a faithful adaptation, as faithful as it can be with the Muppets. Sure you get little interactions where they are clearly themselves instead of Auten’s character’s, commenting on the script, cracking jokes, bickering etc. Then Piggy witnesses Bingley-Kermit and Jane, who is played by an elegant English rose of an actress, seeming a little too chummy. Maybe the actress (Emma Watson would work) is assuring Kermit that Piggy doesn’t really have feelings for Josh but all Piggy sees is Emma’s hand on Kermit’s back. From then on she’s frantically running around trying to both perform her role as Elizabeth while also sabotaging Jane and Kermit’s scenes.

It works, she startles the horse Jane is riding making Emma fall off and twist her ankle. Emma quits. piggy declare she’ll just have to play Jane too, but no need. Gonzo as Miss Austen introduces a replacement, Lily James.

So now it’s Piggy vs. whatever pretty lady is Jane for this scene. Lily “accidentally” takes croquet mallet to the face. Josh OConner has to chase Piggy through a forest trying to perform Darcy’s first proposal because Piggy is hellbent on running over Sophie Turner with a golf cart.

The whole thing has devolved into chaos by the third act with Kermit screaming at Piggy that of course he was just acting! And he was just mad that she never considered him to be Darcy material. Gonzo rewrites the script so Bingley and Darcy were switched at birth and Kermit is actually Darcy. Final scene is the double wedding of Kermit and Piggy as Lizzie and Darcy and Josh now demoted to Bingley marrying last minute replacement Jane, Sweetums.

Gonzo declares this is all exactly as he, Jane Austen, always envisioned it.
