I know there are bound to be differences from book to screen. I know no one will ever be happy as a book lover to watch an adaptation fall short in someway. It just feels so very avoidable if they went in chronological order. Give them 1.5-2 more years. Let Penelope become her own person a tiny bit beyond Whistledown. Be pleased with where she gets LD to.
Let Colin gain more of a personality than eating and leaving. Make him the lovable scamp you show Benedict to be. Let him grow restless.
Let them be awkward after Colin, a friend (and crush) offends her in her own home in front of potential suitors. What’s more British than not actually talking about it???? Let Benedict find his Cinderella. Maybe LW is kinder than everyone expects, even goes after Sophie’s “family” and while Eloise won’t forgive her outright, maybe she’s less vindictive.
Let them build something from that as he travels. And when he gets back, all bronze and hunky, suddenly smooth to every female (as they seem to imply he suddenly is) but he’s there for his family. He’s there for his truly good friend Penelope, who has taken control of her wardrobe if nothing else and avoids yellows. She looks lovely, is friendly with Lady Danbury, has a begrudging standoffish relationship with Eloise that no one really knows what happened. She is warm to Kate the few times they interact as to not piss off Eloise and Violet still has a fondness for.
She can still want out of the Featherington household, by way of marriage. She can find her voice without LW as a mask, making Colin sit up a bit more. She’s always looked lovely, but does she sparkle when she laughs? Is that new?
And then finding out she’s LW, perhaps concern warring with the fact that she’s found something her own. The same thing we wants too, and is jealous of that. Jealous that she is indeed braver for risking it all and leaving behind more than her name and status. That while yes, he has been running away he’s found something, created something that he can’t find the courage to take further like she has. That both his older brothers are happily settled with their own things to look after but he feels at sea even when he is home.
Still can have Francesca meet John, still have Eloise & Pen not talking. But there’s more emotion behind it. Instead of 2 late bloomers discovering they’re suddenly hot, thank goodness they’re friends. Someone start playing Linger by the Cranberries.
Sorry, just needed to get this out.

Blatantly Partisan Party Review XL (federal 2022): The “Teal” Independents
Running where: 6 out of 8 states and territories—not NT or QLD. Most are in specific lower house seats; see full list below.
Prior reviews: None, this is not a party
(This entry is a bit long. The first section covers the rise of the indies this past decade and what they stand for. If you are primarily interested in whether a teal is standing in your seat and a recommendation if so, scroll down to the candidate list and recommendation sections.)
Australia has seen a resurgence in independent politics the past decade. In 2010, the only indies in the House of Representatives were men who had been first elected to public office as Nationals MPs and since left the party. At that year’s election, Andrew Wilkie ran a successful independent campaign for the Division of Denison (now Clark): in a remarkable four-cornered contest, he came third on first preferences and won after the distribution of preferences. Next, in 2013, Cathy McGowan ran an impressive local campaign to unseat Sophie Mirabella, a terminally unpopular Liberal who had steadily turned one of the safest seats in the country into a loss. As a friend with relatives in Indi quipped to me, “every time Mirabella met a voter, she lost a vote”. McGowan in 2019 then successfully handed over to another local indie, Helen Haines, the current Member for Indi, while Zali Steggall defeated Tony Abbott in Warringah. Kerryn Phelps also briefly held Wentworth after winning as an independent at a 2018 by-election but she narrowly lost to Dave Sharma in 2019.
This election, independent campaigns have been especially well organised, receiving significant funds from clean energy activist Simon Holmes à Courts organisation Climate 200. There are plenty of indies not funded by Climate 200, including a couple of competitive ones (e.g. Dai Le in Fowler, Rob Priestly in Nicholls), but by and large the indies getting attention are those with Climate 200 backing. These indies have become known as the “teal indies” for the colour many use in their branding or as the “climate indies” for their policy focus. Holmes à Court had formerly participated in Liberal Party fundraising activities for Josh Frydenberg, but was expelled after writing an opinion piece in support of closing the Liddell coal-fired power station. He promptly began supporting independent and minor-party candidates with more progressive climate agendas than Liberal MPs.
Because this is not a party as such, the teal indies are a diverse bunch. Some are running on distinctively local issues, and if you are in one of their electorates you probably know them and the issues much better than I do. I would largely define the teals as centre to centre-right. A few clearly lean left (e.g. David Pocock, Kim Rubenstein) while some belong to a lost generation of Liberals: professional women who two decades ago would have been moderate Liberal candidates, but who have been put off by the party’s notorious sexism problems and its inability or refusal to act on climate ()e.g. Allegra Spender, Sophie Scamps, Kate Chaney).
Three issues unite the teals. They want much stronger action on climate change, guided by scientific advice. They want integrity in politics—you can read this as a federal ICAC. And, as implied by the end of the last paragraph, they want gender equity. The specifics of exactly what sort of policies they support on climate, integrity, and gender vary between candidates and each campaign has been resolutely focused on their electorate’s expectations—and on tying incumbent Liberals to Scott Morrison and Barnaby Joyce, no matter how nice and moderate the local incumbent might be.
Climate 200 has contributed to twenty campaigns this election. Four are candidates from parties I have reviewed: Leanne Minshull of The Local Party (TAS Senate), David Pocock of his eponymous party (ACT Senate), Rebekah Sharkie of the Centre Alliance (Mayo), and Kim Rubenstein of Kim for Canberra (ACT Senate). Of those four, only Sharkie is the incumbent; the other three are challenging for Senate seats. Three more people in receipt of Climate 200 support are incumbent independents who are likely to be re-elected: Helen Haines (Indi), Zali Steggall (Warringah), and Andrew Wilkie (Clark).
The remaining thirteen are independents challenging sitting members for a seat in the House of Representatives. They are varying degrees of competitive. I think Zoe Daniel should win Goldstein over toxic cesspit of a person Tim Wilson, and Monique Ryan (Kooyong), Allegra Spender (Wentworth), and Kylea Tink (North Sydney) are all in strong positions too. I would suggest 2–3 of those four will unseat the incumbent. I am also tipping one other indie, not necessarily a teal, to unseat an incumbent somewhere in the country. There is buzz around Kate Chaney here in the west for Curtin, although I’m not yet persuaded it’s enough to get her over the line. I suspect David Pocock is going to fall just a few percent short of defeating Zed Seselja for the second ACT Senate seat.
The following are the candidates to whom Climate 200 has contributed funds. They are alphabetised by seat contested, which is named in brackets. In square brackets is party affiliation, if they have one. Italicised candidates are sitting incumbents.
ACT: David Pocock (Senate) [eponymous party]; Kim Rubenstein (Senate) [Kim for Canberra]
NSW: Nicolette Boele (Bradfield), Kate Hook (Calare), Caz Heise (Cowper), Georgia Steele (Hughes), Kylea Tink (North Sydney), Hanabeth Luke (Page), Zali Steggall (Warringah), Allegra Spender (Wentworth)
SA: Jo Dyer (Boothby), Rebekah Sharkie (Mayo) [Centre Alliance]
TAS: Andrew Wilkie (Clark), Leanne Minshull (Senate) [Local Party]
VIC: Claire Ferres Miles (Casey), Despi O’Connor (Flinders), Zoe Daniel (Goldstein), Helen Haines (Indi), Monique Ryan (Kooyong), Alex Dyson (Wannon)
WA: Kate Chaney (Curtin)
My recommendation: In all instances I recommend you preference a teal above a Liberal or National candidate and the various far-right crackpots (this favourable recommendation applies to Rob Priestly and Dai Le too). Just how strong a preference you give them will vary based on individual, but it will be generally a decent or good one—especially given how many dire candidates are on some ballots.
I want to go into more detail than I usually do in giving a recommendation, as there are strategic considerations to make in some cases. If your priority is unseating the sitting Liberal, you should ponder who is likely to end up second and third as preferences are distributed. If there are three candidates left in the count and none has 50% (or, in the Senate, none has reached a quota), the third one will be eliminated. and their preferences will decide which of the remaining two wins the seat. Where will their preferences go? If the third candidate is Labor or Green, the easy majority of their preferences will flow to the teal and might get them over the line if the margin is close enough. If the third candidate is a teal, however, some of their voters will likely break back to the Liberals to give the Lib the win ahead of Labor or the Greens.
This means that if your main goal is defeating a Liberal and the count is likely to end up a three-way contest between the Liberal, a teal, and a party candidate you might otherwise vote for, consider your vote very carefully. In such a situation, if you decide that Labor or Green (or another desirable candidate) is likely to finish in the top three but cannot defeat the incumbent Liberal on preferences, while the teal is also likely to finish in the top three and could defeat the incumbent Liberal on preferences, then you might wish to give the teal a better preference than Labor/Green/other-desirable-party. I do not normally recommend tactical voting, and our system is designed to avoid it, but in this case it’s relevant.

Allegra Spender wants you with her in the Parade!
New Post has been published on https://qnews.com.au/allegra-spender-wants-you-with-her-in-the-parade/
Allegra Spender wants you with her in the Parade!
Tumblr media
Wentworth federal Independent MP Allegra Spender will be marching in this year’s Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade and is asking for LGBTQIA+ constituents from her Sydney Eastern Suburbs electorate to join in.
This year, Allegra will be taking part in the Parade as part of the Independents for Inclusion marching group that is celebrating diversity across the electorates of Sydney’s four federal Independent MPs.
Marching with her will be North Sydney MP Kylea Tink, Warringah MP Zali Steggall and Mackeller MP Dr Sophie Scamps.
“It’s truly an honour to once again march alongside fellow independents Zali Steggall, Kylea Tink, and Dr Sophie Scamps at the Sydney Mardi Gras parade, standing shoulder to shoulder in solidarity with our LGBTQI+ community,” Allegra said, ahead of the parade.
“Growing up in Sydney, I have enjoyed watching the Mardi Gras and evolve from a protest march to a global symbol of LGBTQI+ pride and solidarity. It is an incredible opportunity to honour the work of those who have fought for the rights of the LGBTQIA+ community and continue their work and stand up for LGBTQIA+ rights.
“Last year, marching alongside other independents and community groups at Mardi Gras was a deeply moving experience. The energy, joy, and sense of unity were palpable as we celebrated alongside diverse members of the LGBTQI+ community. Standing alongside the ’78ers, who bravely paved the way for LGBTQI+ rights in Australia, was a poignant reminder of the progress we have made and the work that still lies ahead.
“Attending Mardi Gras for me is about actively participating in the celebration of love, diversity, and acceptance. It’s about amplifying the voices of marginalized communities and continuing to advocate for policies that promote equality and inclusion for all.
“Sydney is proud, and we want you to join the ‘Independents for Inclusion’ to celebrate! If you’re part of Wentworth’s LGBTQIA+ community, please fill out my form to come along!”
With the slogan for this year’s Mardi Gras being “Our Future”, the Independents marching group has chosen the theme of “Powered by People” in the spirit of community independents and the vibrant communities they represent.
Team Allegra is looking for 4-5 Wentworth members of the LGBTQIA+ community who are interested in joining this joyful procession, alongside Independent MPs and community members from those other electorates.
Participants in this year’s float will be required to walk for the entire parade, as there will be no float vehicle and volunteers may be required to attend a briefing/rehearsal in advance of the event.

"City-based teal independents have crossed the great dividing range to support Pilliga and Liverpool Plains farmers and traditional owners fighting a Santos coal seam gas project and the accompanying Hunter gas pipeline."
"Kate Gunn, a farmer who hosted the information day, said she was hoping more people would realise that developing coal seam gas on the Liverpool Plains was an “exceptionally bad idea”.
Gunn is one of a younger generation of farmers. Soon after she returned to the land, the first big coalmining project was announced for the region. Since then, both BHP’s Caroona coal project and Shenhua’s Watermark coalmine have been dropped. Now she is dealing with the Santos project.
“There’s a lot of us that are very committed and the number is growing,” she said. “I went to town yesterday and was asked for my phone number and people said ‘make sure you ring me next time you have a protest or a blockade. I want to come and hold a sign’.”"

Light my fire... Part 1 of 2
Tumblr media
Summary: Tom is one of your best friends for years now. After his stint on Broadway he is back on home soil and accepts Benedict's invitation to join him, Sophie, you and 3 other friends on a long weekend getaway in Scotland´s Highlands. Are the both of you ready to notice that you have missed each other more than you might have wanted to admit to yourself?
Genre: Friends to lovers, FLUFF, Fun and Flirtation
Author: @sabine-leo
Part: 1 of 2
Wordcount: 2573
Note: Thank you for all the comments, notes, pm´s and reactions to the little teaser of this story. I do hope you like Part 1 !! Comments, likes and reblogs are soul-food and very much appreciated! THANK YOU SO MUCH!
Even though he had wanted to decline this invitation at first, he had to admit that he was happy to be here now. The setting could not be more oppositional to his bygone living arrangements in New York the past months. He had loved the buzz of the never sleeping city, the walks with Bobby in Central Park, the excitement before going on stage on Broadway or the view he had out of his apartment window. But breathing in the crisp, clear air that smelled of nothing but natures purest, unpolluted breath was cleansing and calming in a way that was very welcomed by his body and soul. With a smile on his lips and a visible puff of air out of his lungs he saw six figures approaching the deck of the cabin he was standing on. Laughter carried a great length when no noise besides natures own music was there to distract the ears from it. Tom hid his hands in his pockets and watched his friends come closer, the smile on his features getting bigger and more earnest in its depth.
He had missed them all!
The tallest figure of the bunch stopped short for a second and Tom could hear the deep chuckle before a happy statement made him laugh.
“Look who finally made it! Mate you missed one hell of a hike!”
Tom started to move and went down the few steps to greet Benedict with a warm hug.
“Seems like it. I already unpacked and got a decent nap in while waiting for you bunch. Did you get lost in the Highlands?” Tom grinned and patted his friends back.
Benedict leaned in with a laugh and stage whispered “Remind me not to give the map of trails to (Y/N) next time.”
Both men laughed when they saw your slightly flushed face.
“I got us back in one piece, didn´t I?!” You asked with a grin ruining your try on a stern face.
Ben chuckled and rolled his eyes.
“Yes, you did, but only because this is the only smoking chimney around.”
Tom hid his laugh and hugged you next.
“Hey Tom!” You smiled into his embrace and he inched you a bit closer against his warm, snuggly jumper. Taking in a deep breath.
“Hey (Y/N)!” He responded with a smile and whispered
“Good thing I lit a fire then…”
Laughingly you wiggled out of his embrace and swatted the chest of your dearly missed friend.
His following laugh warmed your half-frozen body.
“Make fun of me as much as you like. I am going to take a hot shower and snuggle close to the fire for the rest of the night!”
“WORD!” Sophie jumped in and greeted Tom as did the other three who had already arrived this morning. Ben kissed his wife and lead the way into the big cabin that would host them for the next 4 days. “You lasses go take that shower. Lads we are going to prep Dinner and start the night with a good bottle of Covo Bianco.”
“Oh god no!” Tom laughed and followed his friends inside.
Ben hugged him again. “Glad to have you back on home soil my friend.”
Showering did take a bit longer than usual but finally your legs stopped feeling like getting pinched by thousands of needles. The prospect of good food, lovely company and a lit fireplace made you get dried and dressed instead of jumping into the cosy looking double bed directly.
Well, hopefully good food. There were 4 men cooking after all, two of them probably knew how to PLAY a chef but besides Bolognese Toms skills in the kitchen remained more useful for breakfast than Dinner. At least he said that himself. When you walked into the open space kitchen you started to laugh nearly directly. Sophie was already taking over and banning the men to set the table, stir the sauce and stoke the fire. Tom tried to set a foot in front of the oven to look at the steaks but the stern looks on Sophies face made him surrender with raised hands, retreating slowly with a charming grin. When he turned, he stood directly before you and tilted his head.
“Quick. Let me safe you!” His hands softly grabbed your arms and pushed you backwards out of the kitchen. You chuckled. “I think I would have survived.”
Toms smile got even more handsome.
“You don´t know that. Plus, I´d rather have you help me find the wine cellar before Ben really breaks out the Covo Bianco!” Before you could argue Tom had your hand in his and headed towards the stairs. “Really? You did hear that I nearly got us lost in the Highlands today?” You asked with a laugh.
Tom stopped short with a chuckle and you ran into his chest.
“This is a cabin…” he started with an amused look down on you, keeping you close with a hand on your hip.
“A big cabin…” You interrupted.
“Agreed. A big cabin. But it is not as vast as the Highlands.”
The face you made teased a chuckle out of him.
“Come on (Y/N). Help a friend out…”
“There are probably spiders down there…” you whined.
Tom laughed out loud.
“Undoubtedly. Highland-spiders are monstrous. Now follow me into the darkness. I swear to protect you with my life.”
“You are an idiot!”
Tom turned and squeezed your hand. “An idiot you choose to befriend years ago and one that missed you after your too short a visit to Broadway.”
“You could have missed me 5 more minutes and explore the cellar on your own Hiddleston!”
All you got was a dark chuckle and a squeeze of his big hand that held yours in a firm but tender grip while he led the way downstairs.
---
Benedict grunted when he sat down, a glass of wine in his hand.
“Blimey, could you hold my wine for a second dear?”
He handed his glass to Sophie and grinned.
“Good thing that we all know each other so well and don´t have to be all prim and proper!”
“What are you doing Ben?” Sophie looked at her husband who just that second opened up is belt and the first knob of his trousers. With a relieved grunt he took back his glass and winked at his wife.
“SO much better!”
Tom chuckled from his spot on the sofa.  “I see you threw composure out of the window for tonight…”
Ben huffed but before he could answer to Toms quip you leaned over Jack, who sat in the middle, a little bit and lifted Toms jumper. “Don´t get all patronizing Hiddleston. I saw you open up your own button before dessert!”
And right you were. His trousers had two open knobs letting his Calvin Klein´s peek out.
Tom grabbed your wrist. “You did not…how could you betray your best friend like that?” he rumbled darkly with a glint in his eyes.
Benedict, grinning broadly, lifted his glass. “Always remember Tom: The only substitute to good manners are fast reflexes!” Laughs that erupted from everybody and Jack leaning forward to grab his own glass broke the contact between you and Tom but you felt his eyes linger on you when you got up some minutes later. Ben and Sophie were talkatively prepping a game of Pictionary. You walked behind the sofa to grab yourself a glass of water in the kitchen when suddenly Toms big hand closed around your wrist and tugged you down. “Teasing me, (Y/N)?”
You snickered. “You started it when you pretended, I had a spider on my shoulder down in the cellar.”
Toms thumb ran circles over your pulse. The waft of his cologne and his chuckle did not go unnoticed by you. He tugged you down even further and placed a quick peck on your cheek. “I missed that.” He whispered and let go of you slowly. You smiled and touched his shoulder while standing up straight.
“Missed you too scamp!”
 ---
“Banana! Moon!... Fruit bowl?” Christine jumped up and down hectically. Tom lifted an eyebrow.
“Fruit bowl?! Seriously?”
“Na-ah. No talking.” Ben chastised and you could not hold back your snorted-out laugh.
D-I-N-G. Time was up. Tom fell back onto the sofa with a roll of his eyes.
“Who´s idea was it to draw upside-down?”
“Yours Mister Hiddleston. You wanted to -up the challenge- after you and (Y/N) beat us all bloody.” Ben grinned. Tom started to smirk and laugh. “I did not know that we also had to switch partners at this time. No offense Christine…” Christine smiled. “Non taken. But what did you draw there?”
“Lokis helmet…” You said while nipping at your drink, sitting opposite Tom with Sophie by your side. Christine frowned and turned her head sideways. “Oh dang.”
Tom beamed at you and you winked with a soft smile.
It was the last game for the night. Ben and Sophie bid their good nights with grins on their faces, stating that this would be their first kids’ free night since months. The rest moved closer to the fireplace. Enjoying quiet conversations or the crackling of the fire accompanied by the soft music Tom had put on. Christine, Jack and Philipp shared the sofa. Tom lounged in a wing chair closer to the fire and you had made yourself comfortable on the ground with a cushion. Your back leaning against Toms chair in between his legs. The warmth of the fire made you sleepy after the day outdoors and a phenomenal dinner shared with the people you cared about. Your head fell back against Toms leg. The soft chuckle when he leaned forward and his long fingers brushing your hair to one side made your eyes open up again. “Come on darling, I´ll walk you to bed. Otherwise you might get lost in this big cabin.” He teased and chuckled when you ungallantly snorted.
“I´ll find my room, thank you very much!”
Tom smiled and breathed a kiss into your hair.
“Alright, then help me find mine?”
“Can´t move…too tired…” You responded with a little grin and closed eyes. Tom rolled his beautiful blue orbs in playful exasperation and flung a leg over you to get out of the chair. Bending down he grabbed your hands with his and tugged. “Arise oh trail-finder. It will get cold down here when nobody is there to keep the flames crackling.”
With a moan you let Tom tug you up. Unsteady and tired as you were you bumped into him.
“Sorry!” You mumbled but Tom only laughed and turned you into the right direction.
“Good night everybody.” He said and followed you out into the hallway.
When you had found your room -after you accidentally opened up the door to the storage closet- Tom leaned in and hugged you close for a lingering moment.
“Sleep well darling.”
“You´ll find your room?” You asked sleepily and held on a second longer.
His chuckle vibrated through your body.
“Yes, it is right next to yours.”
“The storage closet?” You grinned against his chest.
“The other door…” he chuckled again. “…Stop teasing me and get some sleep.”
“You´d have to let go of me for that.” You looked up and the twinkle in your eyes made Tom bite his lip. “Reluctantly…but ok.” He smiled and stepped back a bit rubbing your arms before walking towards his door.
“Tom?” you said halfway into your room.
“Mhmm?!”
“Glad you are back…and decided to come here.”
Tom smiled and tilted his head. “Me too…sweet dreams darling.”
 ---
Morning came too soon and with it the crisp, chill air through the slightly open window that woke you. The sheet was heavy and warm. So much so, that you did not want to part with it when you climbed out of bed to close the window and grab some clothes before you´d head into the shower. Reluctantly you parted with it three minutes later and quickly tiptoed your way into the hopefully warm bathroom. Still sleepy, you placed your fresh clothes onto the heating unit and got rid of the worn Loki shirt Tom had gifted you some years ago.
It was your favourite shirt to sleep in.
The click from an opening opal glass shower door did not at all sound alarming to your still sleep-hazy brain. But when a deep voice cleared it´s throat with an unmistakable glee to it you turned around with a shocked expression. Your hands desperately grabbing the Loki-shirt to cover your naked breasts.
“Good morning darling. Would you pass me a towel please? Or did you come in here to join me?”
Toms grin got bigger when he saw the shock on your face and his alter ego currently pressed against your breasts.  He had gotten a good look on your naked back and the flimsy material covering your fine behind…even when he really had tried to be a gentleman and avert his eyes but failed miserably in nanoseconds.
You could not help but notice his wet hair dripping onto his lean torso. His groin was still covered by the opal glass door by the way he was leaning out sideways.
“Oh my god I am so sorry!” You blurted out.
Tom laughed a soft little laugh and looked into your eyes.
“I don´t think that this god is particularly sorry…I rather thinks he likes the place he´s being pressed at.” I know I would like it…he thought.
“What?” You got out not very eloquently.
Tom laughed again, this time a bit more mischievous and with an accompanying wink when he nodded his head towards the Loki-shirt.
“OH!” You looked down on your shirt and blushed.
“So, towel or joining me?” He dared to say with a grin on his handsome face.
You threw him the next best towel in your reach and missed the playful sad huff he gave before he disappeared fully back into the shower. He stepped outside the next second. Still dripping wet but the towel wrapped around him. Low. Very low. The V shape of his hips in good display…as were his trained abs. You stood there, still clutching the shirt against your front and stared when he walked over and leaned towards you to grab his stash of clothes on the stool behind you. A drop of water fell out of his wet hair directly onto your collarbone and slowly made its way down your still dry skin. From the feel of it you could have sworn that it would evaporate any second because your skin felt as if it was on fire. When he straitened again, he grinned at you and gave a quick peck to your cheek, tugging softly at the shirt you were holding onto like a life-jacket.
“Pick me up in my room before you head for breakfast?” His quiet, deep voice caressed your ears. The breath from his spoken words tickled your shoulder.
“Uh-huh!”
Tom smirked and walked to the door. He had almost closed it behind him but lurked in again.
“You know…That is a rather glorious purpose he is burdened with!”
Your brain really was not working properly this morning because you threw the Loki-shirt towards Toms face. When you noticed your mistake, you made a run for the shower and yelled.
“Close the damn door Hiddleston!”
“From the inside or the outside?” Was his laughing reply before you heard the door fall close.

Elisabeth: Kitsch
SO EXCITED TO DO THIS ONE. This didn’t wind up being my favourite song from the musical, but I think it comes a very respectable second. The Interplay between the history and the FEELING of history is so interesting to me, the way that we soften the edges to fit the things we’d rather learn.
Perhaps more than any other, this is Lucheni’s song. He fulfills his usual role, bridging the scenes with the relevant high points, but it’s in this one where I feel he shines brightest. And that’s true, despite the fact that the Takarazuka and Essen versions come at it in very different ways with very different messages. Even with the lighter and less critical spin on the song, this is Takarazuka Lucheni at his cheeky best.
Tumblr media
And as for Essen Lucheni, his anger for the aristocracy is perhaps outdone only by how much he hates each and every one of us for buying what they sell.
Tumblr media
Both are great versions of the song, particularly in the story that they’re choosing to tell. SO COME LET US EXPLORE
Even just a cursory viewing of the two performances show how dramatically different they are in what they’re telling. The most important information we need to learn is how Hungary is becoming Austria-Hungary with Franz Joseph and Elisabeth as its rulers, so in this, both versions are the same. Both also, in a very broad way, look to strip Elisabeth of her mystique somewhat, but with very different ideas of what that means.
The Takarazuka version is almost entirely focused on Elisabeth’s beauty and her obsession with it. As I’ve been watching the two versions much more closely for these posts, it’s a recurring trend I’ve noticed where the Takarazuka makes changes. The song in the cafe, for example, has the patrons commenting specifically on her waist size and diet. (My guess is that this is a cultural choice meant to highlight something specific about Elisabeth, but I don’t have that perspective to extensively comment on it beyond noting it, and how those changes affect my personal relationship with the songs.)
Elisabeth, Takarazuka Lucheni tells us, has assigned diplomats throughout the world to send her pictures of their stationed country’s most beautiful women.
Tumblr media
“She knew well that beauty fades and strength fails.” It’s a great line and probably the most critical the Takarazuka version gets of Elisabeth. Though I have to note that it comes right before discussing how Sophie is still in control in Vienna, and coupled with how Sophie will be shown fading shortly, I wonder if the line isn’t as much commenting on Elisabeth’s strategy against her rival as it is awareness of the expiration date of her own primary weapons. POR QUE NO LOS DOS
We also have this, which is wonderfully cynical and true.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It’s also a brilliant example of how Takarazuka Lucheni delivers that cynicism: slyly, like he’s sharing an in-joke with us. OH THE RICH AND POWERFUL WE SURE KNOW WHAT THEY’RE LIKE DON’T WE THOSE SCAMPS
This entire number in the Takarazuka version is ITSELF a fantastic example of the kitsch it sings about. The ladies are in hilariously overdone “national” costumes that border on offensive. They parade back and forth, representing everything but saying nothing, much like the gesture of Austria “joining” with Hungary. I still can’t decide if I think this was an intentional turn by the creators adapting the musical for Takarazuka, or a delightful side effect, but it’s a spectacle and I enjoy it either way.
The Essen version, though. The Essen version is here to slaughter everyone and it is gloriously full on its shit.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Essen Lucheni comes out swinging and socks you right across the jaw AS YOU WELL DESERVE. Much like Takarazuka Lucheni, he begins by interacting directly with the crowd. He’s not taking photographs though, not capturing the moment, he’s handing out fliers. I don’t know what the cards were, but I hope hope hope they were advertisements for what was on sale in the theater lobby. Either way, in the act of handing something out and the audience members taking it, we’ve become part of the performance. We’re complicit now, we’re willing customers.
Without pause, Lucheni begins. He sings before a dark backdrop, the inside of the cathedral where all the action is taking place. We can’t see, as those gathered at the actual moment would be similarly excluded. BUT WE’RE STILL HERE. We’re near the significance, and that’s good enough. We buy a token, proof that history happened near us, a cheaply made lie that assures us that we mattered.
Lucheni would rather sell us the truth, but we’d never buy it.
The Essen actor for Lucheni is really incredible. He’s not as likable as the Takarazuka actress (WHO AMONG US COULD), but he’s also not trying to be. What he is is darkly funny, devastatingly insightful, and FURIOUS. Even knowing that Lucheni will kill Elisabeth, I spent most of the Takarazuka version actively looking for the point at which he “turns”, a specifically placed marker for the murderer we know he will become. I never found it. OH I SPECULATED A LOT. There was nothing to find, though. It wasn’t seamless so much as it was a switch flipped, and suddenly Lucheni was a sniveling minion keen only to do Death’s bidding.
There’s never a question in the Essen version. I completely believe that if Elisabeth appeared in front of him at any point in the story, he’d shank her again, every single time, with whatever he just happened to have on hand. Nothing but a Playbill? THAT’S FINE I’LL MAKE IT WORK.
But as I said earlier, Lucheni’s rage is wide and deep enough for us all. “Kitsch” is doing several things, but none so much as it’s yelling at humanity past, present, and future, for lifting Elisabeth (and any rich powerful fuck really) to this level of uncritical, adored deification utterly removed from who and what she truly was.
ELISABETH IS STILL ON SOCKS AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE IN THIS THE YEAR OF OUR LORD TWO THOUSAND AND NINETEEN
“People only hear what they want to hear,” Lucheni says in disgust, “and so what remains after some time from beauty and from shit, from dream and reality...”
Tumblr media
A quick aside to say how much I love the background lights coming up briefly on Lucheni’s “Kitsch!” cue to reveal all the spectacle we’re not part of. But it’s a glimpse, a tiny taste to entice us to come back next time.
Tumblr media
I feel I could keep pulling stuff out of this performance forever, but there are a great many more scenes and songs to go through yet. I’ll leave this here, then, the Essen version of this song. It’s just over three minutes, and even without more context than I’ve given in this post, I think it’s well worth your time to check it out.
youtube
There’s one more thing I feel it’d be disingenuous of me to not comment on, which didn’t quite hit me until partway through this post. I’ve said a few times now, how the Takarazuka version is the same play, but also really not. It goes out of its way to pull a lot of the complexity from Elisabeth as a person and a character, and in overall tone is generally uncritical and much lighter, choosing to primarily become a fairy tale style love story. There are several conversations that can be had in that, about that degree of story alteration, where the line is between history and fiction, how far that line can be bent, and a dozen other topics.
This thought isn’t anywhere near that deep, don’t worry. But I do think it’s extremely interesting how the Takarazuka version of Elisabeth is, in nearly every single way, the "heartfelt, sweet, and sensible” thing Essen Lucheni is furious with us all for doing in “Kitsch”.

And finally, I love how the Essen version includes this moment of intense self-awareness. What a good fucking song.
KITSCH!

But really, why doesn’t it seem more traumatic?? (Short Huntik Rant)
So, as we know after season 2, Solwing is kinda...gone away. He’s released to Huntik after the frankenTitan is defeated, but as far as we know, he can’t return to Dante through his amulet (unless he got some glowy hand stuff like Sophie did) and their Bond is broken.
From what I remember, Dante didn’t seem all that traumatized by the Bond being broken. He just kinda seems mildly distressed about everyone being beaten up (MILDLY) and says a solemn “goodbye old friend” thing and kinda just drives off.
I know Titans can be ‘transferred’ between two Seekers who are alike. But we’ve never seen a long time Bonded Titan transfer. Solwing was Dante’s first Titan. They were pretty close. And from the types of relationships we see between Seekers like Dante and Zhalia, who treat their Titans more like family than just tools and means to an end, you’d think Dante would be a LITTLE more impacted by the loss of Solwing.
Does he even MENTION Solwing again? At ALL?
If I write about this thing I swear I’mma load it up with trauma. Mental distress, loss of someone that literally shares some brain space and thought waves with you, it would leave anyone shaken at the very least. Dante’s our calm semi-stoic leader, but he’s got feelings. We know he likes to be the little spoon sometimes. He’s human and a Seeker.
Also, Solwing was a bit of a scamp. I’m pretty sure he and Gareon got along quite well.

Kate and Sophie were a couple of scamps as firsties. That's three rules broken in one go, and potentially a violation of the Honor Code for lying.
