Watching star trek next generation. First episode. 1987. In a quick background shot there's a guy wearing one of the short skirt uniforms. In 1987. SO BADASS.
I absolutely love this quick cut shot. The Federation is supposed to be a utopian society. So the designers are very clearly stating that traditionally feminine garb is no longer gender coded in utopian society.
It's a super quick shot, likely leaving viewers going, "Was that...?" and having no way to confirm it. (No pause, rewind, or video release.) So they can get away with it.
But. Seriously. They did this in what was THE VERY FIRST EPISODE OF THE BRAND NEW STAR TREK REBOOT.
They boldly went.
Brilliant.

I don't want more dark and gritty Star Trek. Keep your wars far away from me. Bring back the hope! Bring on the wonder! Time travel and whales saved the Earth once. I want to explore kooky worlds with dudes in funky costumes! I want absurd plots that let the cast have fun and be silly. Have episodes that do nothing to advance the storyline. Put that cgi to work and make something incredible! Let the plot be goofy! Embrace the strange! Boldly go, my friends. There's a whole universe out there of amazing things. Let us be part of it!

I expect nothing, Mr. Scott. It is merely logical to try all the alternatives. Doctor McCoy, a reading on the atmosphere, please.

okay but y'all were not kidding when you said to read The Price of The Phoenix
cause this interaction between Spock and the guy he thinks murdered Kirk is...
...the gayest of grievings.
I mean, this is only page 15 and Spock has murder barely leashed in his eyes.
but you know what had me losing it????
not me squealing reading this fully published 1977 Star Trek novel like it's a fic on ao3

Proud Author Spotlight
~*~
Hello. I wanted to share my MDZS Star Trek AU "To Boldly Go." I started writing it in 2021 only to not touch it for three years, so I'm just proud of myself for finally completing it! It's specific to the Star Trek shows TNG, DS9, and VOY, and though it includes a lot of direct references to Star Trek, I think non-Star Trek fans could still understand and enjoy it. It is a crossover and later includes characters from TGCF, but they are not the focus.
There are a lot of foreshadowed elements and characters who haunt the narrative. And hopefully, I captured the essence of Star Trek, too.
Thank you!!

Summary: As one of the top-ranked cadets at Starfleet Academy, Wei Wuxian has a bright future with Starfleet in store for him. His dream is to someday command his own ship with Lan Wangji by his side as his Chief Science Officer. As a double major in both Command and Engineering, his thesis project is quite ambitious: he’s going to prove the theory of Warp 10, and he doesn’t care how improbable or dangerous it may be. He just needs to prove his theory, pass his thesis, graduate from the Academy, and then he’ll finally tell Lan Wangji how he feels. Maybe.
Unfortunately, the stars have other plans for him, and his destiny changes.
Years later, Lan Wangji encounters a wormhole in deep space. What lies on the other side of it has been his destiny all along.

I’m so impressed when people can have well structured thoughts about new Star Trek episodes and can make conclusions based on them. Unless the episode is like. Verifiably awful and impossible to get through, there is no medium good or medium bad Star Trek. I watch a Star Trek and my follow up emotion is I WATCHED STAR TREK 🥰🥰🥰🥰
