The number of braids he has is IMPORTANT!!!!! One represents his family, a way for him to show them the world through his travels and see that he's okay now. (This one usually represents family/friends watching over them when they leave their village or go on a hunt as a sort of protection, but it gained a new meaning for him personally after growing up the way he did).

One represents his struggle in childhood, a reminded to himself that no matter how difficult life gets, tomorrow will always come (and sometimes that's worth living for). It's also a reminded that, despite how bad it got and how hard the struggle was, he still survived. He is a fighter at heart.

The last one represents his love. If/when he finds a partner he wants to share the rest of his life with, he’ll cut it off and use it to make an accessory for them. (In his village, this was used in place of an engagement/wedding ring). If he never does find someone that special to him, it will always represent the love he has for his friends (and found family).
