FINAL FIGHT
The Asanos (Assassination Classroom) VS the Zoldycks (Hunter X Hunter)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Asanos
Members: Gakuhou Asano (father) and Gakushuu Asano (son)
Propaganda:
CW: physical abuse
"Crazy dad whose misguided goal is just to make his son strong (but whose definition of real strength leaves much to be desired), and son who does see the error in his dad's ways but is brainwashed enough to imagine that his "filial duty" under the circumstances is to "take control". No one knows for sure if a mom exists, but she clearly doesn't want to have much to do with these lunatics." "The dad doesn't even consider his son family, just a "student" as he is a principal. Utterly unhumane conditions is where he trains his son in. And worst of all, they compete on who will control the other, leash included. The first time the son even considers calling him father is when he literally abuses him physically."
The Zoldycks
Members: Zeno, Silva, Kikyo, Illumi, Milluki, Killua, Alluka, Kalluto
Propaganda:
CW: murder, torture, isolation
"What ISN'T dysfunctional about them? A family of assassins, they train all their children to be killers, including with literal torture. Killua is the one of the family who's a main character, the heir of the family, and he eventually runs away due to the dysfunctionality. All the kids are isolated, told they don't deserve friendship, and they all have different opinions on family matters but it affects them all! Illumi wants to control Killua to as extreme a degree as he possibly can, and even though Silva lets Killua leave, he fully expects him to return home and join the family business again, and both him and Zeno knew about Illumi's extreme methods of control." Note: edited for length, full submission here

CW: Non-graphic mentions of mental and physical abuse.
So if you guys have been keeping up with either of my alternate accounts, you probably know about the big poll war thing happening.
If not, here's the gist: Basically @dysfuntional-family-fight is hosting a poll right now, and we're in the Finals. The two families going head to head are The Asanos and the Zoldycks.
(Naturally, if you follow me you know I'm rooting for the Asano's to win all the way.)
Anyway, things have been getting quite dicey in the reblogs, with both sides offering up spicy arguments with great points. And I'm not really going to touch on that too much.
I do wanna talk about the conversation that could be had surrounding the meaning of "dysfunctional" as it relates to this argument.
I must also let you all know I haven't gotten to watch HxH yet, so a lot of what I'm saying is based on what the reblogs have been saying.
The Zoldycks and The Asanos represent two very different versions of dysfunction. The Zoldycks have a lot of abuse and torture running through their family. Physical Abuse being the main way of controlling each other. I don't know if there's a lot of verbal manipulation (though I imagine there is) but the main focus is on the physical abuse.
On the other hand, the Asanos have a solely verbally abusive relationship. The main facet of control is through verbal sparring. While yes, Gakuhou does end up being physically violent with Gakushuu at the end, it is implied it never usually gets physically violent before (again though, like with the Zoldycks, there could be physical abuse involved, it's just that the Asano's mainly focus on the verbal sparring aspect).
So the Zoldycks have that physically abusive relationship, whereas the Asanos cover the mental and verbal abuse.
Another aspect is how they actually "function." So I've seen people discuss the Zoldycks being assassins. They work as a team to get jobs done. Despite the very complex and horrid relationship between them, they can still relatively function as a team when needed for jobs.
The Asanos though? They absolutely cannot do that. Their entire relationship is based on bettering one another. They do not work together at all in any way. Sometimes their goals will align, but they still act independently of each other even when those independent actions happen to benefit the other. I.E: Gakushuu's need to win and be the best benefits Gakuhou because it helps uphold the ideological base Kunugigoaka functions on as a school.
So, the Zoldycks can be a functioning(ish) team when called for, whereas the Asanos preach heavily against teamwork to the point where they can't even work with other people outside of their family.
These two families' relationships parallel each other in that it's an abusive, dysfunctional relationship. But other than that, they are completely different. They're opposites.
I believe this means that their dysfunction really is incomparable. Because they are dysfunctional in such different ways, it comes down to what the audience perceives and interprets them to be more dysfunctional. What do you as the reader/watcher believe?
I personally think the Asanos are more dysfunctional. Making a post about that next and will probably reblog the whole poll to do so. Cause I have to throw in my two cents!

Success and Failure - a fanfic by MidoriFlowersEwe on ao3.
Characters:
Asano Gakushuu, Asano Gakuhou, Sakakibara Ren, Akabane Karma, Isogai Yuuma, Five Virtuosos, Class 3-E (Assassination Classroom)
Additional Tags:
Domestic Violence, Asano Gakuhou's Bad Parenting, Asano Gakushuu-centric, Canon Compliant, Unhealthy Relationships, Father-Son Relationship, Character Study, Canonical Child Abuse
This one detailed the relationship between Asano Sr. and Jr. and as per the tags, canon compliant. It’s portrayal of the effects of abuse is very nuanced. It breaks my heart to see that there are many people who could have spoken up for Asano, and how there are people who try and make it better (which is the comfort I need, honestly). This also lets us see glimpses of Gakuhou’s psyche, and see how he hurts himself along with Gakushuu. Some characters try to make excuses for him, but the story only explains his actions and doesn’t try to justify them. This fanfic is unfinished.

Recently, I've been looking to get into Oils and traditional work with a little more conviction. These are various studies ranging from 1 - 8hrs a piece in an effort to break through the weird fear and get a little more comfortable with the medium.

The Ushiromiya family
Members: Kinzo, Krauss, Eva, Rudolf, Rosa, Jessica, George, Battler, Ange, Maria, Natsuhi, Hideyoshi, Asumu, Kyrie
Propaganda:
"PEAK weird family drama. Fighting over the inheritance leads to multiple people dying in gruesome ways" "The whole plot of the game is that they all are so dysfunctional it would make sense for any of them to commit murder" "This family is dysfunctional and abusive on every levels. The parents are fighting for the inheritance, because the elder embezzled money. The grandfather, Kinzo, hides in his room and never shows up. Not unusual, he neglected his family his whole life. Seems that he preferred a mysterious mistress than his family. When he talked to his children, it was to scold them for being incompetents. The atmosphere is oppressive. The children of Kinzo were bully. Krauss bullied Eva, who bullied Rosa. Concerning the next generation: Battler is in conflict with his father because he cheated on his mother. Natsuhi is putting pressure on Jessica for her to become the heir of the family, and is losing contact with her daughter. Eva has deciced what the life of Georges is becoming, and that he will not marry a servant. As for the relationship between Rosa and Maria, this is just the best mother-daughter love-hate relationship ever. And everything ends in blood, for ever and ever." More propaganda here
