deranged thoughts from me!!1!
ok so in hannibal i think ears are used to portray a passageway to the heart/soul and are a symbol of life itself. We get that fun shot of traveling down Hannibal's ear canal when he listens to the opera and is made to cry from it - he considers music to be something profoundly beautiful and worthy just like he does culinary and visual arts. You can get to Hannibal's heart through his eyes, tongue, or ears. The next time we focus on ears is when Will is fighting Tobias and manages to clip him in the ear when fighting him off. This makes Tobias run off and leaves Will's ears ringing. Tobias was someone who, like Hannibal, held musical arts in high regard. I'm not really sure what clipping him in the ear couldve symbolized, maybe foreshadowing to his death? idk. Anyways.
We get to Abigail. Losing an ear isn't deadly; Abigail has her ear cut off and fed to Will and is more or less ok. But I think this symbolizes a partial loss of her soul. By offering up her ear to further the goal of manipulating Will so that their weird little family can work, she gives up her last hope of true independence to Hannibal. One window to her heart is cut off and forced onto someone who never asked for it, who doesn't want Abigail to lose her independence. The remaining window (ear) is being fully occupied by Hannibal; she's bought into his honeyed words fully, the other ear that could listen to reason being stolen from her. I think this could be used to foreshadow her death as well - she's lost half of her self, so she is all the more vulnerable to having her spirit snuffed out.
Also, as @valentinsylve mentioned, the mushrooms in Eldon Stammets' garden look like ears. Kinda ties into my thesis about how ears can be a pathway to the soul and therefore also connection, since that's Eldon's whole thing.
And as @felicity-smoak-is-my-goddess mentioned, Will gets sent an ear during his trial. I honestly don't remember the chronological order of events during s2a that well (but I'm rewatching it rn) but it could be symbolic of Hannibal offering a piece of his soul to Will, putting his life on the line to get him free by killing the judge (but I don't remember if it's Hannibal or Michael that sends him the ear, or maybe it's never revealed. If it's Michael, then yea its a display of how much Will's work means to him as emulation is the highest form of flattery and Michael is offering up some of his soul to Will as well)
Anyways url change incoming

The Top 40 Most Popular Operas, Part 3 (#21 through #30)
A quick guide for newcomers to the genre, with links to online video recordings of complete performances, with English subtitles whenever possible.
Verdi's Il Trovatore
The second of Verdi's three great "middle period" tragedies (the other two being Rigoletto and La Traviata): a grand melodrama filled with famous melodies.
Studio film, 1957 (Mario del Monaco, Leyla Gencer, Ettore Bastianini, Fedora Barbieri; conducted by Fernando Previtali) (no subtitles; read the libretto in English translation here)
Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor
The most famous tragic opera in the bel canto style, based on Sir Walter Scott's novel The Bride of Lammermoor, and featuring opera's most famous "mad scene."
Studio film, 1971 (Anna Moffo, Lajos Kozma, Giulio Fioravanti, Paolo Washington; conducted by Carlo Felice Cillario)
Leoncavallo's Pagliacci
The most famous example of verismo opera: brutal Italian realism from the turn of the 20th century. Jealousy, adultery, and violence among a troupe of traveling clowns.
Feature film, 1983 (Plácido Domingo, Teresa Stratas, Juan Pons, Alberto Rinaldi; conducted by Georges Prêtre)
Part I, Part II, Part III, Part IV, Part V, Part VI
Mozart's Die Entführung aus dem Serail (The Abduction from the Seraglio)
Mozart's comic Singspiel (German opera with spoken dialogue) set amid a Turkish harem. What it lacks in political correctness it makes up for in outstanding music.
Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, 1988 (Deon van der Walt, Inga Nielsen, Lillian Watson, Lars Magnusson, Kurt Moll, Oliver Tobias; conducted by Georg Solti) (click CC for subtitles)
Verdi's Un Ballo in Maschera
A Verdi tragedy of forbidden love and political intrigue, inspired by the assassination of King Gustav III of Sweden.
Leipzig Opera House, 2006 (Massimiliano Pisapia, Chiara Taigi, Franco Vassallo, Annamaria Chiuri, Eun Yee You; conducted by Riccardo Chailly) (click CC for subtitles)
Part I, Part II
Offenbach's Les Contes d'Hoffmann (The Tales of Hoffmann)
A half-comic, half-tragic fantasy opera based on the writings of E.T.A. Hoffmann, in which the author becomes the protagonist of his own stories of ill-fated love.
Opéra de Monte-Carlo, 2018 (Juan Diego Flórez, Olga Peretyatko, Nicolas Courjal, Sophie Marilley; conducted by Jacques Lacombe) (click CC and choose English in "Auto-translate" under "Settings" for subtitles)
Wagner's Der Fliegende Holländer (The Flying Dutchman)
An early and particularly accessible work of Wagner, based on the legend of a phantom ship doomed to sail the seas until its captain finds a faithful bride.
Savolinna Opera, 1989 (Franz Grundheber, Hildegard Behrens, Ramiro Sirkiä, Matti Salminen; conducted by Leif Segerstam) (click CC for subtitles)
Mascagni's Cavalleria Rusticana
A one-act drama of adultery and scorned love among Sicilian peasants, second only to Pagliacci (with which it's often paired in a double bill) as the most famous verismo opera.
St. Petersburg Opera, 2012 (Fyodor Ataskevich, Iréne Theorin, Nikolay Kopylov, Ekaterina Egorova, Nina Romanova; conducted by Mikhail Tatarnikov)
Verdi's Falstaff
Verdi's final opera, a "mighty burst of laughter" based on Shakespeare's comedy The Merry Wives of Windsor.
Studio film, 1979 (Gabriel Bacquier, Karan Armstrong, Richard Stilwell, Marta Szirmay, Jutta Renate Ihloff, Max René Cosotti; conducted by Georg Solti) (click CC for subtitles)
Verdi's Otello (Othello)
Verdi's second-to-last great Shakespearean opera, based on the tragedy of the Moor of Venice.
Teatro alla Scala, 2001 (Plácido Domingo, Leo Nucci, Barbara Frittoli; conducted by Riccardo Muti)

...what's wrong with being spunky? o.O
Nothin whatsoever! "Spunky teen girl" just one of those tropes that's firmly in my own NOPE zone, mostly because I grew up in the late 90s and early 00s. While that decade had some feminist stories (Buffy! Protector of the Small! Animorphs!), it was — many history writers agree — overall quite regressive with regard to feminism.
Many times this pervasive antifeminism came out in efforts to write Strong Female Characters™. Batman & Robin (1997) spends forever convincing us that Babs deserves to be Batgirl despite her gender, stopping the plot to establish that she can "keep up with" the boys. Captain America (2011) introduces Peggy as Agent 13 through having her punch a junior soldier hard enough to knock him over because he joked about the U.K. Wanted (2008) desperately wants us to believe in Fox, mostly so that her male protégé can surpass her. It's not as direct as women in refrigerators, but it's still condescending.
Even progressive female heroes still got treated in that era as harmless by default. And that's where "spunk" came in. Because women's anger is treated as silly and harmless, and women themselves are treated as inherently benevolent. "Spunky" means mostly cheery, just a little bit snappish. Grown men are never "spunky" — the label pretty much always refers to people of low power, especially children, especially girls. Nancy Drew is always "spunky" in her book blurbs, even though she's first and foremost a noir detective. When Felicity (Felicity Saves the Day, 1996) risks death to ride to war and help her brother, she's marketed as "spunky." When Rogue (X-Men: Evolution, 2003) sucks a friend's soul out through their skin and eats it, she's "spunky." Those are all really cool and/or scary heroes, but they got reduced to a label also used for disobedient puppies. Not as direct as "isn't it funny/silly/ harmless, this lady being violent?" in your Batgirls and your Agent 13s, but kneecapping real female heroes all the same.
Anyway, Loren from Animorphs doesn't get treated anywhere near as condescendingly as Agent 13 or Batgirl. But she's never appealed to me as much as other Animorphs characters, because she spends a lot of time proving herself, and not a ton of time doing stuff. Eva is also snarky and smart, but Eva scares everyone (Edriss, Marco, Jake) who knows her well enough. Michelle is also primarily a nurturer, but Michelle contributes to almost every plot she appears in, whether for good (saving Jake's life in #22) or for ill (shooting at Tobias in #27). Estrid also spends a ton of time proving herself, but she ends up being a serious threat that is taken seriously by everyone else in #38. Loren has several moments of proving herself (saving Chapman from the skrit na, understanding multiverse theory almost as fast as Elfangor, hitting Visser Three with a softball, not letting Tobias die saving her) but none of that dramatically changes any of the plots she's in — Chapman would've been rescued by the andalites anyway, Elfangor already knew black holes, Visser Three takes no damage, Tobias is hard to kill. None of this is to say that I dislike her, just that she reminds me of some tropes that I do dislike and I'll never enjoy her much for that reason.

7 Line Tag Game
Thank you @memoriethereaderandwriter-blog for the tag. Gently tagging @dyrewrites, @writeblr-of-my-own, and @anonymousfoz (if you want to).
I've finally picked up Legend of the Rat Bastards again, so here are the last seven (eight, oops) lines:
I turned to the others, arrayed to my left in the shadows, ‘How do we know where they’re keeping the gems?’ Felice nodded towards the tree, ‘They’re probably in there, where the glowing green light is.’ I grunted and moved on, ‘So what’s the plan?’ Tobias peered over at the group by the tree and then flattened himself back into the grass. ‘We should surround them,’ he said, ‘Ambush.’ Felice nodded, ‘I can get over there.’ ‘I’ll head round towards the tree,’ Igor offered. The plan was made and in a puff of mist that smelled faintly of summer rain, Felice vanished and reappeared in the shadows on the the other side of the hill.

And that’s it. That’s the end.
I just finished uploading the final file of the final book in the first big series I ever wrote…
I’ve been working on The Clockwork Chronicles since 2018. I got the idea while I was visiting @tiss.writes for my 30th birthday and started writing it almost as soon as it hit me. It was my first full length novel, my first full length series and it was a big freaking deal to me.
5 years later what was supposed to be a trilogy turned into 4 books and it’s now finished, uploaded, and ready to be delivered to you, dear reader, on July 26.
To say this is bittersweet is an understatement.
While I was working on this last book, I just wanted it finished. Wanted to get it off my plate so I could move on to something new and shiny.
But now that it is?
Well. Saying goodbye to the crew of The Defiant Duchess is hard. And I’d be lying if I said I didn’t feel a little hollow, a little sad, now that it’s over.
So cheers to the characters that got me started. To Persinette’s big heart. To Manu’s liveliness. To Agnes’s excellent cravats. To Sully’s determination. To Rose’s clever mind. To Kindle’s ability to change. To Chirp’s search to find themselves. To Brend’s longing to learn. And to all the side characters: Benard, Owen, Felicity, Drea, Hiccup, Stella, Alys, Hatter and dear, darling Tobias.
And cheers to you, dear reader for joining them, and me, on this journey.
I can’t wait to see what the next 5 years brings.
