Duncan always seeming to have a protective look around felix and venetia, getting too upset to close the curtains after the party.

Elsbeth talking about venetias personal business like it’s fresh from a gossip column and not her daughter.

Venetia and Felix having to watch as their parents invite people to stay then kick them out once they’re bored of them. Them only having each other to cling to, being overly protective and dependent on eachother and being somewhat too close. Matching tattoos and knowing glances. Felix willing to drop oliver so quickly for her to be happy.

Felix having to be the messenger between farleigh and James about money, defending his dad even though he knows it’s wrong, because he feels like he owes it to him.

And when Felix realised Oliver was lying about his upbringing he kept it private despite his anger and still checked up on him at the party despite hating him.

now i know what you may be thinking; “oliver is obviously a homme fatale.” and you’re right! he fills out all of the characteristics;

controlling.

dangerious

ambitious, wanting power

yet it is not the same.

emerald wrote oliver in a promiscuous way that normally women are portrayed.

he is alluring, putting on the many faces he needs to draw people in. it’s an act of submission and dominance, he plays whatever part he needs to. the way he speaks is compassionate, articulate, and quite charming. he leaves a little mystery to the family and the audience that leads them wondering, who really is oliver quick?

Have you read Venetia?? I’ve been meaning to get around to it eventually!

I've read most of Georgette Heyer's books; I found Venetia especially delightful as a character. Some of Mrs. Heyer's heroines tend to be flighty or oblivious to social norms - or lean into social norms beyond good sense - but Venetia is clever, and determined, and saucy, and I enjoy her character probably more than I should. XD
