A fine set of fetlocks! by National Library of Ireland on The Commons Via Flickr: Captain W.J. Baird, Aide de Camp to the Lord Lieutenant sits astride a really fine looking horse in this carefully posed image from the Poole Collection. Now we know the name of the soldier so now we want to know is the name of the horse??? +++ UPDATE +++ Thanks everyone, for confirmation that Captain James Baird was aide-de-camp to Lord Wimborne, Lord Lieutentant in Ireland, and that he was in that post in 1917 (newspaper reports). O Mac suggests Busoni as the horse's name, but we'd need some hard evidence. We're a tough crowd. Oh, and we always love to see John Spooner waxing lyrical about movable boudoirs! Photographer: A. H. Happy Reading!
Tumblr media
Your breath shook as the wind started to pick up, bringing your gaze up from the stone beneath your feet to the trees in the distance. You watch them begin to shake and thrash until they seem to rip themselves into pieces, their colors in pieces and floating on air.
Then your eyes are on the sky where the few clouds that had just been soft and puffy were now being whipped through the sky like a drop of blood in crystal clear water until they too started to shatter and mix with the pieces of the trees.
The wind whips your hair causing the ends to batter your face and neck, and you’re looking around desperately feeling your breath being nearly completely drawn from your lungs.
“Loki!” You scream, breath trembling as your eyes dart back and forth.
He was just there.
He was just beside you.
You look back to the trees over the hill, once floating into pieces and now completely gone as the landscape begins to crumble closer and closer. There isn’t much time. This timeline will be erased in mere minutes.
The sky is turning into a mix of deep purple and orange as the pieces of flowers start to mix in the air, and you watch as the nearby trees begin to dust away.
“Loki!” You scream again willing your voice even louder, trying to overcome the severe winds beating against you.
Trying to ignore your world dissolving around you, your eyes desperately search for him; trying to focus on catching sight of the man you had fallen for in such a short time.
All you see is your world in decay and the vice on your heart clasps impossibly tighter.
Over the crackling landscape you just barely hear a struggle, and you see movement over your shoulder behind a stained glass window.
You run up the steps of the cathedral and burst through the wooden double doors. Simon, the man who ran your timeline, the timeline that had been wiped and was now in the middle of disappearing entirely, was in a battle with Loki. You know Loki can handle himself, especially against an enhanced human, but you can’t help yourself when you throw yourself between them.
With a steady breath you slowly bring your hands together, conjuring up a ball of white and blue flickering energy and morph it into a sharp point. Just as the dagger solidifies in your grasp you flip over Simon and turn to block his hit towards Loki.
Your heart burned with white fire, snapping at your ribs and willing you to continue as the world around you ends. You’re intoxicated with rage. This man reigned terror over this world for years. He was the reason you were part of the resistance, fighting to delete a timeline that should have never existed.
And now he’s taking away your last precious moments with Loki.
You swing at him, aiming for his throat, but he easily leans back just a few inches and kicks your legs from under you.
Loki bounds in front of you and throws a blast of deafening green energy towards Simon, who topples back into a pew with a loud groan.
Loki turns back towards you and kneels, “What are you doing?” He asks with practiced composure, even now when he starts to see the breaking trees beyond the colored glass.
You begin to answer him, but you see Simon swiftly approach and you sit up and push Loki away.
Then there’s a sudden sharp pressure in your stomach, and a pain beyond most things you had ever felt across any timeline.
Loki’s face drops, before quickly flickering into one of rage with dark eyes and bared teeth. He conjures a knife and turns, throwing it at Simon with pinpoint accuracy. In an instant it lodges itself point blank into his skull, killing him instantly.
Once Loki sees him drop to the floor he crouches down and pulls you into his arms.
“Dove, why would you do that? I can take a knife to the back. I’ve done it before.” He chuckles wetly.
You smile through the searing pain in your abdomen, “I don’t want to be the reason you get hurt.”
“But-”
“You have to go, Loki. I was going to die anyways, and you will too if you don’t go. There’s not much time,” Your voice trembles as the stained glass starts to dissolve like the world outside.
Loki looks around, and you’re right. All of the colors are mixing and every sound hurts, “I don’t want to live in a world without you in it,” he strains.
You touch his cheek to grab his attention once more and he leans into your touch, “I may forget you, wherever the timeline ends up, but I will always know you. Finish your job with the timekeepers, and then come and find me.”
Loki chokes out a sob and he believes this to be more painful than learning of his father’s deceit.
“Go!” You beg, your stomach screaming with the effort of your scream, and he kisses you softly on the forehead before he lays you back down and opens the portal with a simple wave of his hand.
He takes one last look at you, making a promise to find you wherever he ends up.
Then he’s gone.

30 Rock: A Trip Through Jenna Maroney’s Wildly Absurd Backstory
https://ift.tt/3xipFYl
Forget Jay Gatsby, Forrest Gump, and Fievel Mouskewitz, no fictional character so thoroughly embodies the American dream as Jenna Maroney. Conceived on a toilet, born on a kerb, and raised in a swamp, Maroney flew to fame and fortune on a rocket built from desperation and a pathological need for attention (why should babies get all the fuss? They’re not the only ones who can fit both feet in their mouths).
Born Ystrepa Grokovitz to parents Verner and Werner, and brought up in Toilet Cove Swamp, Jenna was a natural performer from a young age, gracing many a Florida child pageant stage and at Christmas, regaling mall staff with carols to distract from her mother’s shoplifting. She boasts a seventh grade education and a diploma from the Royal Tampa Academy of Dramatic Tricks, at which she majored in game show pointing and theatre superstitions. It all changed for Ystrepa when she met roommate and best friend Elizabeth Lemon, future head writer on NBC late-night comedy sketch show TGS – which brought us such greats as Gaybraham Lincoln and Fart Doctor.
Actor announcement! The character of TGS star Jenna Maroney was originally Jenna DeCarlo, a part Tina Fey wrote for her Second City and SNL co-star Rachel Dratch, who played Jenna in 30 Rock’s unaired pilot (see below) before being unceremoniously replaced by NBC execs. Dratch went on to multiple appearances in various character roles in the show’s early days.
Back to this timeline. At 29 years old (cough), Maroney has built some career. Not only a comedic sketch performer, she’s also a serious dramatic actor with roles ranging from murdered prom queen to murdered runaway to murdered sex worker to werewolf (various). A talented singer, she’s enjoyed international pop success with hits including ‘Muffin Top’, the theme song from musical ‘Rural Juror’ based on the novel by Kevin Grisham, and, who could forget summer jam ‘Balls’. Her vocal stylings can also be enjoyed in such classics as ‘Break Another Little Chunk of my Lung’ in her lead performance in unlicensed Janis Joplin biopic ‘Jackie Jormp-Jomp’.

30 Rock’s Best Running Jokes
By Louisa Mellor
So high-maintenance she makes Miss Piggy look reasonable and down-to-earth, Jenna’s meltdowns are as regular as her name drops. She loves to be wanted, and is, by the Yakuza. Jenna’s Hollywood lifestyle brings her into contact with many a famous face, towards all of whom she is fiercely competitive and extremely vindictive. She has multiple running feuds with US tween stars, for whose recently-out-of-rehab mothers she is regularly mistaken at awards ceremonies.
In the cut-throat world of entertainment, Jenna is a survivor. (Literally. She watched her entire church group get eaten by a bear.) That survival is rooted in her unfailing self-belief and deep psychological damage. Vice President of East Coast Television and Microwave Oven Programming Jack Donaghy describes her as an unceasing onslaught of dysfunction, while she’s proud to have been declared “unfixable” by TV’s Dr Drew. All of which led to a major career boost when she channelled her total lack of conscience into becoming the mean judge on reality talent show America’s Kidz Got Singing.
Less America’s sweetheart, more its slutty cousin, Jenna’s a multi-hyphenate with a colourful dating history and a weird sex tape for every occasion. She’s not only on cam-a-rah talent, but also the face of the vaginal mesh industry and briefly, was the spokesmodel for Enormé (America’s number one fragrance for plus-sized women). All that, and she’s been writing a sex column for Cosmo. (Cosmo is her 14 year old neighbour. He doesn’t know anything). Few could live life at Jenna’s speed. But you know what they say: if you can’t stand the heat, get off Mickey Rourke’s sex grill.
Mr Rourke is just one notch of many on Jenna’s bedpost, alongside OJ, Roseanne Barr and Tom Arnold, two of the Backstreet Boys, Frank Rossitano and Dog the Bounty Hunter. A legendary international adventuress, Jenna Maroney walked so Alexis Rose from Schitt’s Creek could run… away from the Thai drug lord she’s bribing with sex to help her free Vin Diesel from a Ugandan diamond smuggler’s villa.
Since the end of TGS, Jenna’s been a free woman – doubly so since the sheik who won her in that poker game was beheaded – and therefore able to devote her time to her marriage with gender dysmorphic bigenitalia pansexuelle and female-impersonator Paul, and her hobbies: getting turned on by car accidents, horse-electrocution, and Italian sex parties. From the wiggle in her walk to to the bullet lodged in her jaw, the woman’s an original. Charge your glasses and join us in a toast: She runs a tidy bakery, the boys all want her cake for free… everybody, to the monstrous Jenna Maroney!

30 Rock is available now on Netflix US.

Chapter 8 - People Watching
Fic series: The Final Straw (HP/PJO Crossover)
Premise: Nova spends the day watching students enter into the competition.
Masterlist
taglist: @ilvermornymascot, @lukecastellandeservedbetter, @eva-blog-p
word count: 917
A/N: I'm back!! Took an unwelcomed break for a bit because of two things: a lack of motivation and the new Sims 4 update. If you know, you know. If you don’t, it’s been a pain. Anyway, this chapter is a lot shorter than I initially intended but it is a much needed filler chapter in order to get to the better parts of the story. I've got about nearly 40 chapters planned (oops) so it'll be sometime before this book is finished. Although, with that in mind a few of them might be able to be combined. How does everyone feel about longer chapters? I just want to be careful and not make Tumblr glitch. Hopefully the next update will come a lot sooner, and I hope you enjoy this chapter!
Nova didn't have anything to do on Saturday, leading her to sit on the Grand Staircase and watch as people entered their names in the fountain throughout the day. She had a book resting on her lap, open to the page she had been on since breakfast. The cheers from surrounding students that sounded every few minutes piqued her curiosity. It was nearly as entertaining as watching how the Hogwarts, Durmstrang, and Beauxbatons students interacted on the day they entered in the Goblet of Fire.
The contrast between the excitement of Hogwarts, the regal manner of Beauxbatons, and the seriousness of Durmstrang was fascinating to Nova. Now, it seemed like everyone was more or less the same. Everyone was pretty excited, others tried to intimidate the other students. The one person that stood out to Nova was Clarisse. The daughter of Ares had a commanding presence, one that caused the crowd of kids to part as she made her way to the fountain.
"Going to enter?"
"Nah," Nova turned to Percy, who had just dropped his name in. "They're going to need me as a healer. Plus, I'm not super keen on the possibility that I may die if I'm on one of the teams. Granted, I'm not super keen on the thought that anyone may die."
"I doubt they'd let that happen," Percy noted, causing both Nova and Harry to let out exasperated sighs.
"They can't do anything if the cup is charmed into a portkey in the final task," Harry explained.
"Obviously they'll ban any curses or hexes that could kill the target," Nova continued. "But that doesn't mean people will completely follow the rules."
"And think about the prophecy," he said, sitting next to Nova. "'The heroes combined, shall face the unkind.' Must involve this bloody competition."
"It could involve something else," Percy noted. "Something bigger."
"Exactly." Nova and Harry chorused.
"Wait, what?"
Harry told Percy what had happened the night of the third task, and Nova half-tuned him out. There wasn't a single part of her that wanted to hear a telling of the story again. Tuning back into people watching, she saw Annabeth and Hermione immersed in a conversation as they both slipped their names into the fountain. "So that's how the ceiling works?"
"Yes, and it's all detailed in Hogwarts: A History," Hermione smiled. "I could lend you the book if you like."
"As long as I can borrow any others," Annabeth agreed. "Magic is a lot more interesting than I initially expected."
The Head Girl couldn't help but smile. She knew the girls would get along once they got to know each other, and the two being roommates seemed to help significantly. Soon, Nova found herself fully tuning Harry out as she continued to people watch. It wasn't until she felt a hand on her shoulder that she moved back to the conversation. "Hm?"
"Is that why you seemed off during that summer?" Percy asked, empathetically.
"What?" Nova took a second to remember the topic of conversation. "Oh… yeah. It's a bit hard to grieve when you're preparing for war and fighting it. And vice versa. I'm honestly a little surprised you even noticed."
"The pranks that the Stoll's pulled to help the camp morale didn't have your touch," he shrugged.
"My touch?" she giggled.
"You know, the little hint of magic you always added," Percy scratched his neck, slightly embarrassed.
"Ah, yes of course," Nova shook her head in amusement. "That would be the joke shop products from Zonko's."
Harry laughed at Nova's comment and was about to add to it when Draco approached the trio. "Harry, could I talk to you for a minute?"
"Sure, what's up?" Harry followed Draco up the staircase, to a quieter area of the castle. If Nova wasn't mistaken, the Slytherin seemed almost nervous.
"I should probably head back to the dorms," Percy sighed. "It's been a week and we already got homework I don’t want to do."
"Let me know if you need help," Nova offered.
"Thanks, Nova." the demigod left in the direction of the lodges, leaving Nova alone again.
Through the rest of the day, Nova would have short conversations with anyone passing by, and tried and failed to get back to her book. Cree had joined her after lunch and watched as the Stoll's entered into the competition, not without pulling a prank. Their pieces of paper somehow turned the water in the fountain a deep purple, and the Charms professor, Krishna Padamse, had to fix it. It had taken longer than expected, leaving a whole group of students waiting to enter watching the scene unfold.
By the time the campfire rolled around, Nova was longing for her bed. Admittedly, Payton wasn't a terrible roommate, but they didn’t talk that much in the dorm room. Nova was only in the room when she had to be, making the lack of conversation not feel awkward. There was still tension present whenever they were in the same room.
Not wanting to waste time, Nova immediately went to get ready for bed as soon as the campfire ended, and plopped down on her bed. She was too tired to notice the curtains were still open but didn’t bother moving to do that when Payton walked in.
"Nova, are you okay?"
"Just tired, why do you ask?" She turned to face the wall.
"Because this competition must be hard for you," she said. "With the reminder of Cedric's death, and all that."

26th January 2019
The plan to have something simple and plain for dinner last night failed miserably, as I was up four times in the night for the loo. Poor Joan had the full sound effects as the bathroom is off the bedroom! Clearly things were getting no better so we asked the hotel to arrange to see a doctor, however, as it was Republic Day virtually everyone was on holiday and they were struggling to contact their normal GPs. However, eventually a Dr. Kumar called me and after discussing the symptoms prescribed me with some antibiotics, so hopefully fingers crossed.
We were due to do a half day heritage walk around Shimla, but it soon became evident that Trailfinders hadn’t factored in the fact that everywhere was closed for Republic Day. So we were unable to visit the Gaiety Theatre, the Vice Regal’s Lodge and many more of the old buildings. However, there were some spectacular views of Shimla as it clings to the sides of the surrounding hills. This was the view from outside our hotel.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Nevertheless we had a pleasant enough walk around the town with our guide and we stopped to watch the processions that were taking place for Republic Day. There were quite a few dance troupes in their traditional costumes, all very colourful.
Tumblr media
Also the monkeys were out in force, obviously hoping to pick up a few discarded tit-bits.
Tumblr media
After about three hours we were back where we had started from and so went back to the hotel to see if my tablets had arrived and to refresh ourselves for another walk this afternoon. The tablets had arrived so I immediately took one and started on the road to recovery – hopefully!
After a short snooze we set out on our own to explore the streets and take into the views. There were hundreds of people ambling around following the celebrations, and clearly some of them hadn’t seen snow before because they were having great fun throwing snowballs.
Eventually we began to feel weary and when I checked the app, we’d walked just under 10 miles, over some fairly undulating terrain. So back to the hotel for a hot bath and then something simple for dinner – more bananas! Joan had vegetable biriyani, served by Dhani our very friendly waiter.

Shimla hill station is still the colonial summer capital (resort) to which the British used to retreat when the heat of the Indio-Gangetic plains used to become unbearable. Be it grey-stone work of Vice Regal Lodge, or Gaiety Theater putting neo-gothic architectural excellence, the beauty of building seem to come alive and not only staying in eyes of the beholder. The Elizabethan style mixed and merged with different other forms in buildings like Ellerslie, Christ Church, Gorton Castle, Wood Ville, etc are a must-see.Spirits of that past attract enthusiasts from India as well as abroad when this hill city has been made capital of the state of Himachal Pradesh after India got its Independence
