Yknow, i'm rewatching atla after reading the yangchen novels, and I really appreciate the small meaning behind some things a lot more now. In s3 e11 The Western Air Temple, combustion man shows up and wrecks the place. I always found this sad because the preservation of air nomad culture and architecture was something shown many times to be important to Aang, so the temple being destroyed is really tragic in that way. But also, Yangchen is a western air temple nun. And we can see statues of her there in the episode. So reading the novels and then seeing how her statue is focused on more at the western than any other is a nice touch that shows how much detail the og show had in it. These little nods to what eventually would become lore is amazing.
But as much awe as it inspires, theres symbolism without (imo) even trying to be. In the Yangchen novels, combustion bending is seen for the first time in the atla world, it was written as the biggest plot point and the worldwide threat of the novels. And we see Yangchen and her struggle against it. Things like Nujians death, Yangchens banishment, all of her struggles in the novels are some sort of result from her dealing with combustion benders. And she is from the western air temple. Which is salt in a centuries old wound. Yangchen, an air nomad, a pacifist by culture, who worked so hard to avoid taking lives when she was able, who lost so much because of combustion bending as a technique, who came from the western air temple,
Her home, was destroyed
By the very
Technique
That cost her so much already.

So I've just had this very angsty idea
Warning: includes major character death
When combustion man appears at the Western Air Temple, Zuko manages to take him down on his own, before anyone else can even notice that he's here. But he gets badly injured in the process. Later, Sokka gets sent to bring Zuko to the temple, since they had decided to take him as a prisoner. He goes to get Zuko and he finds him curled up on the ground, covered in blood and dust, barely alive. Sokka wants to fetch Katara, but he's not sure if they can make it back in time, and he doesn't want to leave Zuko alone. So he just sits there. He holds Zuko's hand, soothes him, promises to find his uncle and apologize to him on Zuko's behalf. When Katara and Aang come to check what's taking Sokka so long, they find him cradling Zuko's body, sobbing uncontrollably.
Soo... should I write this?

Random thought: you’d think that the bright-eyed kid Zuko we see in ‘The Storm’ wouldn’t immediately jump to season one Zuko like we see in ‘The Western Air Temple’. Those are 2 weeks apart at the MOST. Like, you’d sort of assume there would be some growing. Did he just get the burn and wake up as season one Zuko?
Also also I looked, he looks WAY more angular in ‘the Western Air Temple’, like… more than the new haircut should do.
Side note but that little bit that doesn’t go into the ponytail in ‘The Storm’? I wish he had it the the ‘Zuko Alone’ flashbacks or when he had a topknot.

Chapter 30: red panda cubs and hangover meals (totally not a date) (:// important note! There is a long novel spoiler in the foot notes in this chapter. The warning is in all caps so let your eyes glaze over if you haven’t read the novel and want to remain spoiler free)
“Gawa leaned close to her ear and whispered. “Who’s that?” She nodded her head toward a nun some years older than her, carrying a stack of books. Jamyang gave the nun a brief glance and refrained from grimacing. She always felt bad for that reaction. She’s familiar with her, but always kept her distance. “Librarian Tsering.” They knew of each other from her extended stays at the great library.
There’s this feeling she’s never been able to shake about her, though. Her instinct, she later learned, went into overdrive around her. There’s something fake about her.
“I don’t like her, Jamyang.”
“Me neither.””
--
Continuation of the flash back in the previous chapter, fox antelopes being cute, hangover dates, red panda cubs being used as excuses, toddlers and suspish people

The ATLA renaissance shifting the fandom from Zutara towards Zukka without actually changing the ship dynamic is so fucking funny because most of the time it functions pretty well. However today I saw another 'oh Sokka had this forbidden crush on Zuko from the beginning' and. Look. What happened there? Seriously, did we watch the same show? Fucking nobody likes Zuko from the get-go! He's an acquired taste at best. Jet notably falls for Zuko at first sight under explicitly false pretenses. Sokka has both a brain and a decent understanding of Zuko's early role in the Fire Nation. He would not say that.

In "The Western Air Temple," when Zuko joins the gaang he is shown to a room and told to unpack, which implies that every one of the gaang has their own room.
Tumblr media
Yet they all continue to sleep in the same room in sleeping bags while they're at the Western Air Temple instead of in seperate rooms. Which I guess has some practical reasons - they're less vulnerable to potential danger if they stay together, and also have the advantage of being near a heat source - but it's also kind of sweet. It's not like they're out in the wild, they're in a temple built to house many people and could have stayed in seperate rooms, yet they sleep near each other.
