#Why must I be a victim of identity fraud again.

King Loki, I apologize for the rant but I would like some advice.

My father always makes me feel like complete garbage. He is always putting me down, never appreciates me, and makes my depression so much worse. I'm fixing up a house to move in with my friends but I'm still stuck at the house since my parents won't help me get my license or a car, much less a job. I cook, do dishes, take care of the pets, take out the trash, get the mail, do my laundry, wash towels, and help with their laundry. I also take care of my sick mother and while I'm currently on summer break, I'm going to college to become a clinical psychologist. Even then, my father will point out other things that I don't do, and expects me to clean the entire house every day. He always talks about how he needs to do everything around the house yet all he does is sleep, play video games, and watch television. He also says he works hard yet on many occasions he says he sits on his ass all day on his tablet. He also yells so much. I get scared every day when he starts yelling because I worry he may leave us, which he has threatened before, or he may actually hit us. He never has hit either my mother or I yet, and says he never would but he slams and throws things when angry at us so it's his way of showing us how much he wants to hit us, even if he doesn't realize it. However, not only do I have many responsibilities, My depression makes it difficult for me to do much, and he makes it worse. Even when I do try to clean the house he always makes comments such as: "About time." or "How long until it gets cleaned next time?" or "This was half assed, you didn't do it right." I have tried so hard to have a connection with him but I'm so tired of fighting for a relationship that he doesn't care about. I can't address my concerns with him because he will threaten to not take me to college and pay the bills. Do you have any advice to help me deal with my father until I can escape?

“Catrina,” Loki drawls, in his smooth resonate voice. “I firstly must commend your good work. For caring for your ill mother, minding the household needs, and that you get up in the morning even if your soul is weary and your bones ache for a rest; that you keep on living even if you do not know how to anymore. Secondly, you have my deepest sympathies for your grievances. I am all too familiar with what it is like to seek the approval of a parent; only for there to be none in return.” His eyes were completely unfocused, yet his pallid features bore the most intense concentration as memories flowed unbidden.

He says nothing for a moment. Then, something in the edge of his mouth—and the corner of his eyes—resembled the ghost of a sad smile.

“Those whom I knew and called my mother and father are dead. That much is beyond dispute. They were not my real parents, but they raised me as their own. I daresay they loved me. That had been in dispute, at least in my own mind for awhile. I found out very late that my identity was a lie. Not Asgardian, not a son of Odin, I was completely unmade. That was how I felt when I learned of my true parentage. I was a fraud, a monster; it explained so much. It explained why I never felt like I fit in, why I would never be my brother's equal, why I would never get what I'd been promised my whole life.” His voice was soft, hoarse. Intent.

Loki raises his left hand and rests his forefinger against his lips as a line forms between his own eyebrows in thought.

“I have lingered around Midgard long enough to come to an understanding of how your minds tick. I shall do my best to give advice where I can.

Try, if you will, to put things into perspective. The most loving parents commit murder with smiles on their faces. They force one to destroy the person they really are: a subtle kind of murder. Even the most loving parents damage their children with the best intentions—to protect them, to guide them, to better them. In most cases, it would appear they do it by imprinting their own fears and prejudices on them.

The point is, parents are mere, imperfect people.

They have flaws, struggles and impaired judgement. They have both emotional and intellectual handicaps. Regardless of their parental role, they are afflicted by personal blockages and limitations.

But most of all, they are people who make mistakes, and who are terrified of being judged by their children.

Learn to see your difficult parent as just that; human. Learn to see their emotional immaturity as a type of disability.

With that in mind, you would do well to keep your expectations of them low.

In many ways the effect a difficult parent has on ones self is fueled by their feelings of injustice and the belief that things could be different, or ought to be different.

In other words, your expectations dictate how you feel.

You need to let go of your expectations and accept your parent for who they are.

You cannot expect someone with, say, a narcissistic personality, to act with empathy and kindness. No more than you can expect a scorpion not to sting.

Difficult parents are much easier to deal with when you accept that they will not change. So do not expect of them more than they are capable of, and you will not be disappointed or hurt.

Do not fall into the illusion of guilt, Catrina.” He warns. “A difficult parent loves nothing more than to make you feel like you’ve hurt them. Or, in a different scenario, like you’re a bad person if you do not do something they ask.

Do not fall for it. If they’re setting a guilt trap, calmly tell them that you do not appreciate being emotionally manipulated, and you will not tolerate it anymore.

Manipulators, and I should know, detest being called out on their dirty tricks.

If they continue to harass you, reiterate that you cannot do what they’re asking you to do this time, and you need them to respect that.

The trick is agreeing with everything they’re saying (how can they argue when you agree with them?) and re-stating your decision over and over again.

Now this part I find to be… far more easier said than done. You must let go of the need for your father's approval, Catrina. It goes without saying that every child needs and wants their parents’ approval. It is normal to want it, and it is normal to receive it.

Yet so many have to accept the fact that this is not going to happen. For whatever reason, their parent has chosen to withhold their approval. Some difficult parents do it as a form of punishment. While others hope to influence their child in the “right” direction.

Most likely, your father loves you, but they have a very warped idea of what parental love is.

In their misguided quest to make you into a version of themselves, they missed the chance to get to know you. And so they cannot appreciate you for the wonderful being that you are.”

He shrugs elegantly. “It is their loss. When you realize this and let go of the need for their approval, you will be able to start living your life in a whole new way.

When confronting your father, be direct and calm without expecting a specific response. That is the part you cannot control. The part that is within your control is letting your thoughts and feelings known, which is empowering.

Stick to the facts and use “I” statements such as, “I feel like my words do not matter to you when you constantly interrupt me” or “I feel scared and misunderstood when you yell at me”

Remember that manipulative parents are not known for their empathy. They will try to confuse you, go on the offensive, or assume the role of a victim.

Do not allow them to bully you into submission by invoking guilt or pity. State your case in a calm and polite manner, and stay cool regardless of their response.

Your goal is to be honest about your feelings, and to make it clear that you will not tolerate certain behaviors.” He softly clears his throat.

“Last but not least, an unhappy alternative is forgoing the relationship that is too harmful. I know, a parent is not someone you can so easily cut out of your life. But if all else fails and your father continues to cause you psychological harm, then this may very well need to be taken into considerable consideration; at least for the foreseeable future. Sometimes it is the only logical recourse.

A parent that is fundamentally incapable of showing love and support, unable to see the error of their ways after numerous attempts to communicate how their behavior or words affect you, consistently dismissive, demeaning or critical, manipulative in a habitual manner, punishing and cruel whenever you disobey, are disrespectful of your boundaries and using threats and intimidation to get what they want is a destructive force that will continue to tear you down until you put a stop to it.

It is not an easy feat, my dear. The parent-child bond is hardwired into the brain, which means children get attached to even the most awful of parents.

But consider the cost of having that toxic relationship in your life—stress breeds anxiety, depression, internalized feelings of inadequacy, and failed personal relationships.

Even her class is victim to the fraud. A mirage of magazines has her face at the front and at the front of her face is Adrien smiling, and although that sounds unimposing, Adrien Agreste’s heart-eyes-smile may as well be a superpower.

They’re in public. On a date.

They’re in public and public means flirting, shoulder brushing, crinkles in the eyes, the whole “we’re in love but not in the overbearing way” thing - just enough for off-guard glances and, oh, those two must be an item.

Oh yeah. Did she mention she’s not actually dating him?

Marinette is suave. Marinette is incredibly capable and creative and you know, speaking is quite easy for someone who’s done it for quite some time so, how hard is ‘flirting’ in public anyway?

“Why are you so, like, attractively hot?”

Quite difficult.

That surely fabricated smile of his droops with… well there’s probably a few reactions he has after that comes out of her mouth. Obviously, her head and lips don’t have the best connection, as she’s pretty sure, “How are you so amazing?” or something of the rather (something else, particularly) was supposed to slide smoothly. And in this whole fiasco of revelations, Sir Adrien Genius Agreste decided for ‘cover’, they’ll pose as girlfriend and boyfriend to excuse the time they’re together! Walking home totally not discussing their next patrol? Calling non-stop? Fencing together? Both arriving to class late? Haha, dating things! No longing for actual dating at all! No, Marinette’s professional and a splendidly coherent actress and—

“Uh… did you say attract–attractively hot?”

Adrien’s bemused whisper stokes the heat in her cheeks as she envies the little girl’s drink nearby that after a spill begins to melt into the floor. The café suddenly doesn’t have enough white noise and– yep, there’s Alya at a table afar, head perked and staring directly at her. Great. Lovely. Great, yes.

“I—” she squeaks, debating the physics if there even is a possible way to melt into the floor and never look at those horribly soft and gentle green eyes again, “I— I mean, uh, babe, you never told me your work-out routine!”

(Psh. Yeah right.)

A hand presses atop hers. In what’s almost a breath, Adrien says, his grin fierce (he can pretend to be gentlemanly all he wants with his voice, but she knows by that smirk (and by whose *cough* Chat Noir) that he’s trying very hard not to laugh at her), “We don’t have to put on a scene now, if you don’t want.”

Excuse him, but she’ll put on every fake-romantic and overbearingly awkward scene she could possible! Thank you very much.

“You seem a bit tongue-tied.”

Marinette snatches her napkin and dabs invisible crumbs from her mouth. “It’s the tea.”

“You had a hot chocolate.”

She’s very proud of the self-restraint she uses to not ball her napkin at him.

“I’m just not used—” Marinette starts, but realises any reporter could be close enough and lowers her tone, “—I haven’t been on a ‘date’ before, and especially not a pretend one. That’s hard enough without Nino and Alya a few tables down knowing we’re supposed to be, you– you know, doing date stuff.”

“Yes, like calling each other attractive quite loudly.”

That time, she does throw it, but it seems explainable enough.

Adrien laughs. “Fine! Fine! Slip of the tongue, I’ve heard worse from you.”

“Shut up,” she says into the table her head’s pressed against.

He shuffles. “Do you want to go?”

“Any longer we stay, and Alya will be interrogating how real we actually are after hearing that.”

Smiling (oh come on, she’s trying to be mad at him right now), Adrien slides off his stool, taking her hand and helping her shorter stature down. Out of nowhere, there beside the table, her fake boyfriend but very much real crush leans to speak softly in her ear,

“I’m sure she’s not surprised, but to ease you nerves…” he pulls away, or more hovers, because the distance he makes barely changes the effect to her heart rate. His face is in front of hers again, closer, much, much closer, and his grin asks the unspoken question her pulse picks up on immediately.

Oh. Cool. Great. They’re- he’s- Adrien’s doing this now, is he?

She nods, almost combusting, and taking the cue Adrien tilts just a little to fit the shape of his lips into hers. A soft, slow and romantic kiss of true lovers; one that won’t leave her head for weeks and will likely leave her a drunken mess walking out the café. She doesn’t want the magic to end, but they eventually break apart.

“Did you mean it?”

Slightly dazed, she furrows her brow.

“The question, I mean? Did you—” Adrien licks his lips. “—Did you mean it?”

“Yes.”

Uh, wow.

Wow, okay. She was meant to deny that.

Funny what kissing does to one’s brain.

Adrien grips her hand firmly, almost as if he’s keeping in the sudden thrill that answer gave him.

“Thought so.”

Smiling, smiling so wide, they head out the shop, blissful, giddy,

and liars.

And the only ones they’re fooling are themselves.

Detective Conan Deconstruction/Plot Twists/Subversion's

Howdy!

I've been thinking a lot because I haven't slept or been made sensible enough to see reality through rational means of comprehension.

For a black and white series of tales such as Gosho Aoyama's DCMKverse I can sure think of a multitude of ways to turn it grey. So many dark, bloody possibilities, such a endless plethora of grief, angst, and schadenfreude, of voided bowels and lost innocence, so many terrifying ideas yet so little time...

Anyway, to summarize the contents of all that verbal diarrhea, my mind has created a vast orchestra of sinister ideas that I can't put them all in one or more stories. Some of them I'll use later, some of them I will not. I guess my main inspiration for this stream of consciousness that shouts madly into the abyss of the World Wide Web, is the idea that some intrepid, curious wanderer may come across my inane rantings and be inspired to write their own atrocities.

Or maybe it will the stoke the wondrous imagination of a writer who is more of a sick fuck then I am, (:

There are five areas that can be twisted into something cruel. They contain the following:

Case’s

Suspect Gets The Last Laugh- Killer is revealed but manages to poison the victim with Ricin or something more subtle allowing the target to die a couple days later. Simple enough.

More Then One Killer- The killer is caught! However a quick look back at the scene reveals he wasn’t alone and he ain’t spilling the beans.

Hannibal Lector Wannabe- A killer decides to fuck with our beloved Teen Detectives by playing a game of manipulation and horror while he threatens their loved ones into continuing.

Escaping Through Statute Of Limitations- When Our Teen Detectives decide to give their customary breaking speech,

Killer Gets Out Of It, Now After Detectives- The killer proves much too clever and sees through our casts tricks. Maybe he begin’s to notice Conan’s con and swears revenge out of his ego.

Loved Ones Hurt In The Crossfire- They were too quick for Conan’s soccer ball, Heiji’s sword, Kogoro’s Judo, or Division One’s reflexes. The bullets, blades, bludgeons. and Pelvic Thrusts couldn’t be avoided and the innocent were hurt before they could be saved.

It’s Too Much All At Once- When the cast see a suspect state his intention to kill himself, especially in the early episodes, the cast would dare them to do it, thinking it is a bluff. It isn’t.

All For Naught- Going down a dark rabbit hole isn’t worth it, if a killer turns out to have escaped or has been dead for a long time.

Big Troll- There was no murder or kidnapping, they just wanted to humiliate them.

Green Mistake- Not all detectives succeed at once. Sometimes they make mistakes... Okay just here me out here. I sincerely doubt that all those amateur detectives despite their talent have a perfect track record in solving cases or even not getting a innocent person hurt. Just look at Heiji’s, Kogoro’s, and Sera’s early (or in Kogoro’s case many) mistakes. It’s statistically impossible to get it right all the time.

Victim Is Worse- Conan and the gang successfully prevent a client from being murdered. The criminal screams at them, telling them how evil he was, and how this was mistake. When they learn of the clients sick actions, they understand why.

Romance

Waiting For Someone Who Is No Longer There- Lets think about the situation between Shinichi and Ran for a sec. if your like me you come to a unfortunate realization that was also in the OVA “Stranger In 10 Years.” Shinichi may never get back to the way he was. Maybe there is no antidote. What if he disappears in that time? And I don’t mean move on, I mean dies without anyone knowing. Ran now has to deal with both a missing Shinichi and a vanished Conan. Yet, throughout her whole life Ran holds out hope, waiting for them. Waiting for Shinichi to call. She refuses to fall in love with someone else and becomes obsessed with finding them... Until in her old age, she dies.

The Sleeping Sleuth Sleeps Around- Okay just listen to my reasoning here for a sec. I know many of you are probably sharpening their knives in the comments but let’s really think about this for a sec. This is the same Kogoro who smacked the butt of one of the Black Bunnies, and repeatedly motorboats whatever young woman he comes across. I doubt if Eri is okay with that. Plus, alcoholism and nymphomania is not a winning combination. He could easily make a mistake while in his delirium.

Shinichi’s Toxic Jealousy- Once again bear with me on this. I don’t think either Shinichi (or Kogoro for that matter) are evil. They have flaws just like any other person. However, Shinichi can be sort of a dick with it comes to how territorial he is with Ran. Just look at Eisuke. Unlike most of the perverts who are after her, Eisuke is a genuinely nice guy and Shinichi treats him like garbage. That got me thinking... Maybe Shinichi’s claims about wanting Ran to be happy aren’t entirely true. A part of him knows what he’s doing is wrong but a selfish side can’t. What if Shinichi’s jealousy starts to hurt Ran severely? Again it have to be written well so Shinichi doesn’t come off like a unrepentant dick but I think there’s something there.

Character Flaws

Hot Headedness Get You Or Others Killed- This idea concerns Heiji mostly. A rather temperamental fellow isn’t he? Always rushing into danger without thinking or having trouble with guile... Ain’t that a losing combination innit? I wonder how many criminals can take advantage of that eh? How easy it would be to trick Heiji to go into a trap if Kazuha is threatened, how simple it would be to switch a blunted blade with a sharpened one, how effortless it would be to get important information, how utterly painless it would be to manipulate him... Well I’ll leave you lovely sick bastards to come up with more.

Dysfunction Junction- Let’s talk about the Mouri’s. They’re... Not healthy to say the least. With Kogoro’s gambling/drinking/man-whoring problem barely touched upon, as well as his abuse of Conan along with Eri’s absenteeism I can say that’s a huge target for blackmailers, debt collectors, and Count Of Monte Crisco wannabes.

Conan The Gremlin- Y’know for such a seemingly innocent little boy, he sure gets into a lot of trouble don’t he? Murders keep happening around him like a curse, and that animal tranquilizer can’t be healthy for Sonoko and Kogoro... Plus people could find out who he truly is and... Well it would probably be really messy wouldn’t it?

Incompetence From The Police- In all seriousness, let’s think about this for a second. You have a overburdened police dealing with a intense rise in the murder rate, illicit narcotic consumption, and terrorism... But before we can get any further let’s talk about real life Japanese criminal procedure. In Japan you can be held for 21 days in a tiny dark cell without due process or access to a lawyer. Your are also being interrogated with the police officers using abusive tactics such as telling you how ashamed your family would be, something that can’t happen in a culture based on Confucian values. You confess but take it back only to find that you’re basically fucked since Japan has a 99% conviction rate regardless of innocence. If your a drug addict, you are literally considered nonhuman by the public at large and due to the Reaganite standards treatment isn’t a option. If your on death row, you are never told when your going to die and even if innocent is unlikely to get out. Stressed at the rising crime rate, the police refuse to investigate any suspicious death and just like in Osaka (yes this actually happened) will simply not add to the police statistics. If your a police officer what are you to do? Just a few years ago there was so little crime and now your stressed to the bone. You’re largely conservative and full of pride so you won’t admit that you must change tactics. This quick jump to conclusions and borderline incompetence can be seen in so many episodes of Detective Conan that’s it’s a wonder that more people haven’t been wrongfully convicted or got away with it... Or perhaps they have.

Black Organization

Government Corruption- Given how much sway the BO has, it got me thinking. What if everything wrong with the Japanese Government is because the BO IS the government. Something sorta akin to how the Russian Mob are basically government officials. So many possibilities other then the usual blackmail, assassinations, and bombings. Electoral fraud, jury tampering, manufacturing consent, subtle revisions of the law to encroach on democratic rights such as those the Third Way, and Neoconservatives did in the west. So many more subtle yet intriguing ways to go about this! Perhaps the BO serves as a lobbying for other more savory companies that proudly align with them such as legalizing gambling or deregulating protections.

Caught!- The BO discovers Conan’s true identity. Hell follows.

Heists

Heist Bombing- Some madman or maybe the MK organization decides to bomb the Kid Heist. Lots of people die, are traumatized and have to deal with the aftermath. I’ll leave the rest up to you guys.

Crazy Fans- Self explanatory until you really think about it. If Kaito Kid is real in this universe, how toxic is the fandom? How many of them have pedophilic undertones with the beloved Kid Killer? What if a stalker discovers Kaito’s real identity and goes psychotic? Riots could happen! So many possibilities! Doesn’t have to dark like in my sick mind, can be played for laughs.

One last thing, because of how long this took to write, a certain beloved detective’s birthday is here.

First Meetings

A/N: I tried to write this in an “x reader” format, but I do not have much experience writing in second person (I am more of a third person kind of gal) so I quick drew up an OC for this. Kira was getting ready for her morning walk with her dog when her phone began to ring. She was currently trying to wrestle Liam in his harness, but the mutt lab was too excited over the prospect of an outing to calm down. She sighed, dropping the harness, and turned to see who it was. If it was another one of those spam calls, she swore she was going to toss her phone out of the building. 

Luckily, it wasn't. It was Evelyn, her best friend, which was weird since she was never up this early unless she had a shift, but Kira swore she was off today.

"Hey Evie," she greeted her best friend warmly before setting the phone down on the kitchen counter on speaker. "You're up early."

"Yeah, Clay woke me up on his way to work. Lame, but I thought I could catch you before you head in to the office."

"Oh yeah," she nodded as she reached down to grab the harness again. "I'm not in until nine, so I am taking Liam on a walk." Eve was referring to her job where she worked as a therapist. It was a government job, so she wasn't paid too well, but she got to help a lot of people in need and that is all that really mattered. She got a good mix of clients, from hyperactive children to adult addicts, so no day was ever the same. She had a few regulars though, one of which she was supposed to see today at one. She was on the schedule for new patients until then today.

"Aw, okay I'll make this quick then. I will pick you up after my shift ends at seven. Be dressed nice. Kay?"

"That is a solid no from me. Evelyn, you know I do not want to go on another blind date. The last one turned out so bad!" Kira turned to Liam and told him to sit. The mutt barked and ran off into her bedroom. Kira sighed and gave up on the harness for the time being.

"Oh, come on Kiki. It wasn't that bad," Eve groaned. "And the worst part wasn't even your fault."

Eve had somehow managed to convince her to go to some crazy fancy restaurant to go on a double date with Eve's boyfriend and one of his coworkers. Early into the night, Kira managed to knock a wineglass into her date's lap and then later the waiter accidentally lost their grip on the platter and dumped all of the food onto her date. While the second part definitely was not her fault -the waiter had said something hit their had and made them lose their grip or something- she still felt awful about the wineglass part. The worst part was she didn't remember touching the glass, or feeling the impact that caused it to tip over.

"Eve, I still feel bad about drenching the poor guy."

"Kira, like a little wine mattered once our dinner was all over him. Besides, dinner was free and he gets to go again without the klutz of the century, on the house."

"Eve," Kira groaned.

"It's a different guy who has no idea about your last stunt. There is no reason not to, unless you have finally asked out Mr. Benjamin Poindexter, which would be the only way I would let you out."

Kira was glad  that Eve was not there to see her, because her face instantly flushed. Needing a moment to collect herself, she picked up the harness again and called over Liam, pretending to be too preoccupied to answer. Once she felt like the charade had gone on long enough, she finally bit out a tired response. "Uh, and if I say I have?"

"I would call you a liar and a stalker because your dumb ass hasn't said a single word to him. Ever."

Eve technically wasn't wrong. About the talking to Ben part; she never had actually spoken to which honestly was the only abnormality she would admit to. She was used to the tight knit community back home, so the curt nods they shared seemed odd to her at first. Then again, this was Hell's Kitchen. It wasn't like Ben had something against her, it was just normal here for people to ignore each other. So again, it wasn't like it was her fault that she had never spoken to her next door neighbor, that was just the norm here.

"I did not! The mail man just mixed our doors up and I gave it back to him! We are neighbors, it's bound to happen." A simple mistake from an over worked postal worker was the proverbial nail in the coffin for Kiara. After she began referring to Ben by name, Eve would not let it drop. That and the fact that she knew he worked at the FBI, also something that also not her fault. He came home in a uniform that had the bold letters plastered across it, it didn't take a genius to guess his occupation.

"Likely story. Just how you seem to see him everywhere and just happen to know where he works." There is was. Kira sighed. "Likely story, but makes more sense if you are totally following him everywhere he goes." Her tone was light, and they both knew she was joking. Besides, stalkers were so uncommon, weren't they?

"This is all besides the point Eve. I am not going." Kira finally managed to get a hold of Liam's leash and made her way to the door, picking up her keys on the way out.

"Well, I wouldn't have to set you up like this if you would just ask your victim out."

"He is not a victim, let alone my victim," Kira groaned and threw open the door. She locked it quickly behind her, fumbling with the keys. "For the last time, I am not stalking Ben!" Because of her frustration, she dropped her keys onto the ground, which was an opening Koda did not hesitate to take. He darted away, the leash slipping through Kira's fingers. Kira cursed and hung up on Eve. She could explain later, she had to catch Liam first.

But when she turned to go after him, she saw that there was no need to rush in the first place. Liam was not making a beeline for the stairwell, he had his paws on the shoulder's of  man, happily trying to lick his face. Once Kira processed who the man was, she nearly died on the spot.

"I am so, so sorry," she quickly sputtered, rushing over to grab Liam. "Liam, down boy, down!" She went to grab the leash when she realized that she didn't have to. It was already in Ben's hand.

"No worries," Ben laughed, nervous twinge to his voice, handing the leash over to her. Once his hands were free, he scratched Liam behind the ears with a heart melting grin. Kira was so fucked.

Kira laughed nervously and shifted her weight back and forth on her feet. "Sorry," she repeated for the second time. "He's a really friendly guy. It feels like he wants to go home with everyone except for me sometimes, the way he acts around strangers."

Kira thought that Ben frowned at the last part, but his smile was back before she could really be sure. "I don't know why he'd wanna do that, with an owner like you," Ben said softly, almost as if he was talking to Liam.

"Um, thanks I think?" Kira laughed nervously and tugged Liam away from Ben. Liam finally released Ben and flopped down on the ground next to Kira.

"Sorry, that probably sounds so weird cause I don't know you, well I mean I know you're my neighbor but like I don't know you like that-"

"Hey, it's okay," Kira laughed. Ben was pretty cute when nervous. However, Kira's laid back nature and words must have not reached Ben because he still looked a mess.

"I just meant cause you're pretty."

Kira looked away from him, her face flushed an practically tomato red. "Uh, wow... thanks... I um..."

"Sorry," Ben groaned, scrubbing his hands over his face. "I did not mean to say that out loud. Or at all. Now it's all weird and all I wanted to say was-"

"Take me to dinner," Kira blurted.

Ben blinked, as if unsure that he heard her right. Kira mustered all of her confidence and smiled at him, looking him right in his eyes. "You wanted to ask me to take you to dinner as an apology for my dog jumping all over you." Kira lifted up the leash as if to remind him that the dog was still there. "You free tonight? I can take you somewhere just so that Liam here doesn't crash the party again. We can talk, actually get to know each other since we do live right next door to each other."

"Uh, yeah. Yeah, that would be nice, actually." Ben smiled. "I get off at six."

"I'll see you here at seven then, sound good, Ben?"

Ben's mouth twitched and he cocked an eyebrow. "Ben?"

Kira's stomach dropped. Fuck. Shit fuck shit. "Uh..." She mumbled, immediately losing all the confidence she had before. "I am so sorry, I just the mailman gave me your stuff one day and your name was on it that must sound like such a shitty excuse I swear I am not stalking you or anything..." Kira winced. She said the word before even he could accuse her of it. Great. Fantastic job Kira. Way to go, you get idiot of the year award.

But then something insane happened.

Ben laughed.

"It's okay, I just thought it was weird. I usually go by Dex. That makes sense though, I mean we are next door neighbors."

Kira let out a huge sigh of relief and looked up at him sheepishly. "You don't think I am some sort of creepy stalker?"

"So the date's not off?"

"Date?" Ben smirked.

Kira flushed bright red again. "I am just putting my foot in my mouth over and over I am so sorry, I said it was a get to know you dinner now it's all weird-"

"Yeah," Ben nodded again, still smiling, somehow even brighter than before.

Kira nodded. "Should I call you Dex too?"

A cleaner Subpoena

I hear the word cleaner and in any criminal event, my thoughts go to what has been referenced before, those silent,,quiet grey men/women in suits who clean up after the messes of the wealthy or politically important people. In this case however, l suspect the Subpeona capitalized may mean PA interview with the F.B.I. with very clear line of questions that may be asked has been sorted and agreed to by his legal representation but then it would not be a subpoena if he willingly answered questions. Subpoena, for interviews when someone is not voluntarily wanting to testify or give an interview, in this case it’s very likely a female we know. The word cleaner mystifies me, other than there are so many issues allegedly involved, the subpoena may be restricted at this point to the issue, my usage of the word issue here means quite literally her issue, meaning the child that may have her DNA, via surrogate. The subpoena then involving the subterfuge of the child and fake pregnancy, violation of the “ of the body” law.

In contempt of a pardon

Contempt is disrespect in any form or disrupting court proceedings or non compliance the judge can declare contempt of court. Contempt of a pardon is odd wording. If mm were pardoned , had she been charged, convicted and sentenced, CONTEMPT would be the least of the adjectives. So if PA , neither has been charged of anything to my knowledge, continued to refuse interview by the F.B.I. A subpoena could be issued. The wording of this confuses me. Oh I know what you think. I can read it in your eyes.

Is she dangerous ? Shouldn’t she be kept away ? My children... are they safe with her right there ? Oh my god, her poor family, it must be so hard to live with her. To love her.

We can’t hire her. She’s too unstable. What if she... explodes in the middle of the day ? We can’t deal with that. She’s too much trouble. She’d probably be a bad employee anyway.

She tried to commit suicide ?? What did she want ? Gather attention ? I would have been so embarrassed to be her mother, who had to visit her in the hospital... I understand why we don’t talk about her anymore, now. How selfish was it, really. Did she think a second on how it would affect her parents to bury their child ?

How does it work ? Has she, like, several personas ? Am I talking to the same person I talked to yesterday ? Can’t she just explains how it will affect me ?

And I’m confused, often, about it all. Most days I have no idea what is going on. I didn’t learn an ultimate truth. Never saw Buddha. 

I don’t live in another world where the concept of transgenderism solely exists. I live in the same world as before, full of the same close minded people that made it so hard to find the answers I never thought I was looking for to questions I couldn’t quite formulate. Still in the same body, too. And my uterus feels like a parasite, so if you could keep my genitalia out of our conversations, I’d appreciate that.

That’s too easy. You can’t just tell me the gender system is bad and then act like one that isn’t yours ! 

That’s just too easy. Rather than change the world, you escape like a coward behind make up or chest binders !

Scores of children born through artificial insemination have learned from DNA tests that their biological fathers were the doctors who performed the procedure.

Growing up in Nacogdoches, Tex., Eve Wiley learned at age 16 that she had been conceived through artificial insemination with donor sperm.

Her mother, Margo Williams, now 65, had sought help from Dr. Kim McMorries, telling him that her husband was infertile. She asked the doctor to locate a sperm donor. He told Mrs. Williams that he had found one through a sperm bank in California.

Mrs. Williams gave birth to a daughter, Eve. Now 32, Mrs. Wiley is a stay-at-home mother in Dallas. In 2017 and 2018, like tens of millions of Americans, she took consumer DNA tests.

The results? Her biological father was not a sperm donor in California, as she had been told — Dr. McMorries was. The news left Ms. Wiley reeling.

“You build your whole life on your genetic identity, and that’s the foundation,” Ms. Wiley said. “But when those bottom bricks have been removed or altered, it can be devastating.”

Through his attorney and the staff at his office, Dr. McMorries declined to comment.

With the advent of widespread consumer DNA testing, instances in which fertility specialists decades ago secretly used their own sperm for artificial insemination have begun to surface with some regularity. Three states have now passed laws criminalizing this conduct, including Texas, which now defines it as a form of sexual assault.

Dr. Jody Madeira, a law professor at Indiana University, is following more than 20 cases in the United States and abroad. They have occurred in a dozen states, including Connecticut, Vermont, Idaho, Utah and Nevada, she said, as well as in England, South Africa, Germany and the Netherlands.

According to the Dutch Donor Child Foundation, DNA testing has confirmed that a fertility specialist, Dr. Jan Karbaat, fathered 56 children, born to women who visited his clinic outside Rotterdam. Dutch authorities closed his practice in 2009, and he died in April 2017 at age 89.

An attorney for Dr. Karbaat’s family said they had no comment on the allegations and emphasized that the cases are decades old.

“Thirty years ago, people looked at things in very different ways,” said J.P. Vandervoodt, a lawyer in Rotterdam. “Dr. Karbaat could have been an anonymous donor — we don’t know that. There was no registration system at the time.”

In June, the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario revoked the license of a fertility specialist in Ottawa, Dr. Norman Barwin, 80, and reprimanded him for repeatedly using the wrong sperm — including his own — in artificial insemination procedures over decades.

The college found that he had inseminated at least 11 women with his own sperm. In addition, scores of donor children claim they were conceived with the wrong sperm at Dr. Barwin’s clinic, though not the doctor’s.

He told one woman that he had used his sperm to calibrate a clinic instrument and that this contamination explained her conception. The college called that unbelievable and his actions “beyond reprehensible.”

“His actions will continue to have repercussions for his patients and their families in perpetuity,” said Carolyn Silver, general counsel at the college.

Dr. Barwin and his lawyers did not return calls for comment.

In the past, patients had little reason to suspect fertility doctors to whom they had entrusted one of medicine’s most intimate tasks, said Dov Fox, a bioethicist at the University of San Diego and the author of “Birth Rights and Wrongs,” a book about technology and reproductive law.

“In a word, gross,” he said of the cases. “In a couple more: shocking, shameful. The number of doctors sounds less like a few bad apples and more like a generalized practice of deception, largely hidden until recently by a mix of low-tech and high stigma.”

Fertility fraud

Dr. Donald Cline, a fertility specialist in Indianapolis, used his own sperm to impregnate at least three dozen women in the 1970s and 1980s, according to state prosecutors. Based on DNA testing, 61 people now claim he is their biological father.

Dr. Cline, who retired in 2009, pleaded guilty to two felony obstruction of justice charges and admitted that he had lied to state investigators. He surrendered his medical license and was given a one-year suspended sentence.

Calls to Dr. Cline’s lawyer were not returned.

Prosecutors said they were not able to press for a tougher sentence for a simple reason: In Indiana, as in most states, there were no laws prohibiting this conduct.

In May, Indiana passed a law that makes using the wrong sperm a felony and gives victims the right to sue doctors for it. Patients may sidestep the statute of limitations in these cases, bringing legal action up to five years after the fraud is discovered, rather than after it took place.

That provision is significant to accusers, because those who discover the identity of their biological fathers in these cases are usually adults.

Cases of so-called fertility fraud have prompted other states to enact similar laws that allow patients and children to pursue legal remedies from so-called doctor daddies.

After discovering the identity of her biological father, Ms. Wiley pressed for a similar law in Texas, meeting with legislators to demand better accountability of what she saw to be a grossly unregulated industry.

In June, Texas passed its own fertility-fraud law, and it goes further than those in Indiana and California. If a health care provider uses human sperm, eggs or embryos from an unauthorized donor, the law identifies the crime as a sexual assault. Those found guilty must register as sex offenders.

The bill passed unanimously in the state Legislature.

“It was a very compelling story of deception, and we’re seeing more and more cases of assisted reproduction being used improperly,” Stephanie Klick, a Republican state representative and a sponsor of the bill, said of Ms. Wiley’s experience. “We need to make sure that what happened doesn’t happen again.”

Some experts believe the measure is extreme. “Sexual assault is a step too far,” said Judith Daar, dean of the Chase College of Law at Northern Kentucky University. “Using that language, and imposing the ramifications that assault imposes, is highly problematic and more harmful than helpful.”

The Texas law applies when a health care provider uses his own sperm or the sperm of a donor other than the one the patient selected. But could a doctor or clinic nurse be convicted of sexual assault if the wrong sperm were provided in a mix-up?

“If a physician is rushed and inattentive, and grabs the wrong vial, a jury might find that the physician knew or should have known that the material was not what the patient selected,” said Ms. Daar, who leads the ethics committee of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine.

If a simple mix-up could result in conviction as a sexual predator, she fears fertility doctors in Texas may stop practicing.

Ms. Klick, the Texas legislator and a nurse, believes that this form of deception does constitute assault.

“There’s a physical aspect to it — there is a medical device that is being used to penetrate these women to deliver the genetic material,” she said. “I equate it with rape, because there’s no consent.”

“It’s creepy,” she added. “It violates so many different boundaries on a professional level.”

Doctor knows best?

A few years ago, Marenda Tucker, 36, took a DNA test to find out more about her heritage.

Ms. Tucker, a mother of four, who lives in Oregon, knew that she had been born through sperm donation. According to her mother, the doctor said he had used an anonymous sperm donor from the South.

The DNA test matched her to relatives of the doctor himself. “Once I had the matches, I realized it was the doctor, and I was like, yuck, gross,” she said. “When I talked to my mom about it, she felt violated.”

“Until now, I’ve been able to handle what life has thrown at me,” she added. “But this was this weird identity crisis.”

Reached by phone by a reporter at his home in Little Rock, Ark., with questions about Ms. Tucker’s conception, the retired physician, Dr. Gary Don Davis, said: “Well, that’s surprising. Let me check on that. Goodbye.”

Further attempts to reach him were unsuccessful, and he died in June.

Why would doctors secretly substitute their sperm for that of a donor, or even a husband?

Dr. Madeira, the law professor who has been tracking many of these cases, said that some specialists may simply have thought it was smart business. Frozen sperm was not the recommended medical standard until the late 1980s, and many physicians may not have had ready access to sperm when patients sought help.

“They could have self-justified their malfeasance in an era of ‘doctor knows best,’” Dr. Madeira said. “In their minds, they may just have been helping their patients by increasing their chances of getting pregnant with fresh sperm for higher fertilization rates.”

But others, she speculated, may have had darker motivations. “I would bet a lot of these doctors had power reasons for doing this — mental health issues, narcissistic issues — or maybe they were attracted to certain women,” she said.

Confronted with the test results, Dr. McMorries acknowledged in a letter to Ms. Wiley that he had mixed his sperm with that of other donors in order to improve her mother’s chances of conception. Laws regarding “donor anonymity” prevented him from telling her, he wrote.

“The thinking at that time was that if the patient got pregnant, there was no way to know which sperm affected the conception,” he wrote.

Before the doctor’s confession, Ms. Wiley believed she had already found the man who donated the sperm from which she was conceived: Steve Scholl, now 65, a writer and publisher in Los Angeles.

“We started this beautiful father-daughter relationship — he officiated at my wedding,” she said. “My kids call him Poppa.”

After learning the truth, she told Mr. Scholl that she wasn’t his biological daughter. He was stunned.

“It took me a while to process,” he recalled in an interview. “We felt so much like we’d found each other. We didn’t know how the reproductive industry worked. But very quickly, we both decided not to let this change anything for us.”

Ms. Wiley still calls him Dad.

Firstly, how is that at all racist? Claiming to have alters without having the necessary causal factor isn't a race, it's a claim, and disagreeing with that claim isn't singling any race out or discriminating against any race, it's disagreeing with a claim. If you're claiming that disagreeing with somebody's spirituality is racism, then you're wrong - spiritual beliefs are not a race, they can have cultural significance but disagreeing with somebody's beliefs does not make you racist. You, by definition, must disagree with the vast majority of spiritual beliefs because most of them contradict each other massively - racism would be to disagree because the belief is held by a particular race, and not to disagree based on contradictory evidence or contradictory beliefs. Spiritual claims can be as factually incorrect as any other, and when you're claiming to have a medical condition that you couldn't possibly have then you don't get to hide behind "it's magic" to avoid criticism. I couldn't say "I have appendicitis" and when all the tests come back negative respond with "actually I believe that I have appendicitis for spiritual reasons" - if you don't have something then you don't have it, no matter how hard you believe.

Secondly, dissociative identity disorder is a medical condition, it has a necessary causal factor - being the victim of abuse or other prolonged/repeated trauma at a very young age. You can't have PTSD without trauma, and you can't have other disorders that are caused by trauma without trauma, that's what causes them, that's how they work. It's not whether you've "suffered enough to earn" it - it's whether you've experienced the thing that causes the disorder (plus "earn", really? it's a disorder not a trophy). When your doctor refuses to give you stitches for a wound that you don't have, they're not saying that you "haven't suffered enough to earn" stitches, they're saying that you don't have a wound and thus don't need stitches. Nobody's saying this because of some suffering elitism, they're saying it because if you don't have the causal factor then you don't have the medical condition that it causes. They're saying it because the people who are claiming to have our disorder without actually having it are spreading masses of harmful misinformation, misrepresenting the disorder, and actually hurting people (see the legions of assholes who faked having DID, invented "system-hopping" and other lies, and used those things to abuse others). People don't want to be misrepresented, lied about, and abused by people who are pretending to have a medical condition that they couldn't possibly have. It's ableism to go around pretending to have a condition that you don't have and negatively affecting sufferers of the condition and the reputation of the condition in the process.

Tulpas are the claim that one can create alters consciously and of your own volition - there is no evidence of this, and even people with DID can't create alters consciously, you can't design and build a custom alter. Alters are created subconsciously and come as they come, it's not build-a-bear. If you're claiming the ability to create alters without trauma, that's a claim of being endogenic (which simply means, in this context, a claim of having alters without trauma... in other contexts it means formed or occurring beneath the surface of the earth, fun fact), and it's misrepresenting what the condition is and how it works to the detriment of sufferers (imagine getting asked "Why don't you just make an alter who can do that?" when you're facing a struggle, because people genuinely think you could just magically craft an alter for the occasion... that shit happens because of the lies of "tulpamancers"). If you claim to have alters for "spiritual reasons" and not as a result of trauma then you're again making a claim of being endogenic (whether or not you actually have alters depends - some people claim to be endogenic but actually have trauma and alters caused by that trauma, they simply deny the causal link, some mistake another symptom or condition for DID, while others are total frauds who are well aware that they're conning people for their own gain or amusement), and again misrepresenting the disorder (implying it's a casual belief system that entails belief in souls and other things, and not a medical condition that causes difficulty for masses of people). You're a shimmering example of why the ideology that DID isn't a medical condition, that anybody who wishes hard enough can create alters, is harmful - it's literally gotten you to a point where you think that it's okay to go into a safe space for survivors and call us "traumascum". Nobody is saying that you have to reach a suffering quota to be trans - they're saying that in order to be trans you have to have the necessary symptoms. Being trans is a neurological condition - the brain develops differently in key gendered areas to how the body develops, and this difference causes gender dysphoria. Gender dysphoria is a sense of wrongness and misalignment pertaining to one's sex and one's sex characteristics - you feel like they don't match, you feel uncomfortable with them, they feel out of place, and often you feel like you should have specific different sex characteristics. If you don't have any dysphoria then you don't have the causal factor (the differing areas of the brain), and so if you then alter your body through transition you will end up with a body that doesn't align with those areas of the brain - this will cause dysphoria. The local soda factory housing Dima’s secret medical facility was home to a large group of super mutants. We fought past and made our way to the basement. There was a large patch of bare earth in the middle of the floor. We looked at each other, and with great dread wordlessly agreed. After all, we were looking for buried secrets.

What we found was a skeleton, with a locket, and a holotape. The tape held a conversation between Dima and a synth woman. She asked if it would hurt. He told her yes, that it would feel like having everything she was ripped out and replaced with something else. He secretly planted a synth among the Far Harbor populace, someone who would be reasonable and open to accepting synths, a bridge between worlds. The locket identified his victim as Captain Avery.

Valentine was… grim. “Just when I'd decided to give him an honest chance, we find this.”

I moved further into the basement, both to be thorough and out of a desperate desire to find some evidence that we were mistaken, that my partner’s brother wasn’t a utilitarian murderer. “We'll give him a chance to explain.”

“Explain?” He followed me into the next room, a chamber with computers and a security door. “What explanation could -”

A voice interrupted us from a speaker in the control panel, “Scanning. Approved user detected. Synth prototype. Unlocking medical area door.”

To say Valentine was disturbed would be an understatement. “What? This thing knows what I am? How? Just who are you?”

The voice from the intercom identified itself as KYE 1.1, a computer intelligence designed to control medical facilities. Specifically, “the room through that door.” It continued, “You match all specifications for an approved user. Personally speaking, they were very narrow.”

Valentine frowned. “This must be Dima's handiwork. Guess he never thought another prototype synth would be on the island. Might as well take a look.”

I almost wish we hadn’t, that we’d just let the knowledge of what happened lie and not seen that room, the handprint of blood on the countertop, the red streak of a body dragged across the floor…

Valentine was aghast. “What… was all this blood from turning that woman into a replacement, or is this where Avery met her end?”

I sighed, “It's a gruesome picture either way… Valentine, wait.”

He was already halfway up the basement steps, “I've got questions for that 'brother’ of mine.”

“We don't know if more mutants are in the building, slow down!”

At least he slowed, but he radiated fury. I’ve never seen him so angry. This wasn’t just the righteous outrage at the loss of a life, this was horror and disgust and betrayal by someone he had been willing to try to forgive.

I tried to remain calm and reasonable, some sort of voice of logic, though God knows it was the most difficult time I’ve ever had of it. “We will confront him, he will have his say, and then we will determine what to do next.”

I could faintly hear metal grinding together from how tightly he clenched his jaw. I wanted nothing more than to do or say something to make that tension fade, but…

He nodded once, “Fine.” And we began the silent walk back to Acadia.

We went straight to Dima upon arrival. He greeted us with some quiet nervousness. He didn’t know what he had hidden, but I wonder if he suspected what we would find. Valentine stood behind me, silent. I started with the easy revelations, the launch key and the kill switch for the wind turbines. Dima was distressed by both.

“You saw, of course, the submarine is rusted into the dry dock,” he said. “The only target that missile is ever going to hit is the base itself. We have to keep that key out of the wrong hands. The Nucleus has innocent people living there among the zealots threatening Far Harbor.”

“We found the launch key, already. We’ll make sure it's never used,” I assured him, “but why create a kill switch for the wind turbines powering Far Harbor’s Fog condensers?”

“I remember… I was afraid that Far Harbor might turn against us. See us as too different for their precious island. So I made a contingency plan. Mass murder. I hid the kill switch code because I couldn't stomach the thought of actually using it. Then I hid the memory because I couldn't even stand knowing I made it.” He sounded amazed and horrified that he had even considered his action, “What have I done? If the Children of Atom were to ever get a hold of that code, they would destroy the town.”

“We already have the code. Far Harbor is safe.”

He was relieved. “Good. Now we just need to find some way to end this conflict. When the Fog got worse, the people of Far Harbor killed a Child of Atom missionary. There's been nothing but hatred and bloodshed since.” He hesitated, “But, you found… something else, in my memories, didn’t you? I can tell by the look on your face, the way Nick is… what was it?”

I handed him the last memory, and the locket. “You killed Captain Avery and replaced her with a synth.”

“What? That's impossible. Let me see…” His next words were anguished, “I... I did it. I killed a woman from Far Harbor and replaced her. I stripped a synth's identity from her and made her an agent…”

“You're a fraud,” I said.

“I… I needed to calm Far Harbor. A moderate voice. An example of what humanity should be. How we could exist together as equals. But I couldn't live with the memories of the blood on my hands…”

“It's called willful ignorance for a reason,” Valentine muttered.

If Dima could have shed tears, I believe he would have. “I can... remember it... the blood. The life ebbing from that woman's eyes... The screams… A human and a synth are both gone because of me!”

“You did this on your own?” I pressed, “No one else in Acadia is involved?”

He calmed somewhat, though the sadness remained. “What I've done goes against all of our ideals. I even hid it from myself. So, no, there can't be anyone else.” He studied me carefully, then. “If Far Harbor knew I had done this, they wouldn't destroy just me. They'd come after Acadia. And then without us, the Fog condensers will eventually fall into disrepair. Everyone will die.”

With a heavy sigh, I nodded, “This will be kept secret.”

Valentine glowered, “Is this what we call justice? A woman is killed in cold blood and we let it slide?”

“Would you have him killed?” I challenged. “That is what will happen if Dima turns himself in, if Far Harbor ever found out about this. You know as well as I do that there is no law in Far Harbor, only tradition and ancient customs. Avery and the synth who became her will find no justice in an angry mob.”

He frowned, still angry, but he said, “Alright. For the sake of the rest of the synths here, and the people in Far Harbor who’d die without Acadia’s technology, we’ll keep quiet. For now.”

Dima spoke quietly, somber and shaken. “Thank you. I promise you, as long as Far Harbor stands, I will make sure that Acadia does everything to make up for my crimes. Maybe the... guilt, will keep me focused…”

“Didn’t stop you before,” Valentine bit.

Dima winced, but said, “I… may have a plan to keep the peace on the island. Unfortunately, it is… as gruesome as the last.”

“What?” Valentine shouted, “Who has to die this time?!”

“Nick, please, listen,” Dima begged, “As horrifying as it might be to suggest, if Far Harbor could be made more... tranquil... by our intervention, then perhaps the same trick will work twice, on the Children of Atom. We could replace High Confessor Tektus with someone willing to forgive Far Harbor and work towards reconciling.”

“I can’t believe we’re even considering this. Holmes?”

“There must be another way, Dima.”

Dima shook his head, “None that I can see. The authority of the High Confessor is absolute. The Children of Atom won't see the need for peace unless he... changes his mind.” He looked at Nick, “I do not suggest this lightly. I have spent so much time trying to find a way, but it remained impossible because High Confessor Tektus will never permit peace… and removing him was never a possibility I considered. Until now.”

Valentine looked away. “It’s your call,” he said softly.

It hurt. I was disgusted and horrified when I found proof of the Institute’s practice of replacing those they wanted on their side, and now here I was agreeing to the same. “In some corner of Hell, he’s laughing at me,” I whispered to no one in particular. To Dima, I said, “Tell me every detail of your plan.”

The plan was to lure the Confessor to a secluded location and dispose of the body. I countered that convincing him to leave would serve the same purpose. Dima agreed, though he doubted it would be possible. For bait, Dima asked us to retrieve recordings of his conversations with Confessor Martin. He would use these to create false evidence of Martin's return, an unlikely possibility that Tektus nonetheless fears.

As we started to leave, Valentine suddenly turned and marched right back to where Dima stood. “There's zero reason for me to think you actually give a damn, but if you really mean all that junk about Acadia making up for your sins, if you really are happy to see me again and want a chance at starting over, you have to promise you'll never remove a memory like this again. You have to live with the crimes you've committed and all the guilt that goes with them like everyone else.”

Dima was taken aback, “I… yes, I promise.”

“Good.”

We left to find Kasumi, to let her know everything we discovered. She was distressed, and wondered what would happen to Acadia, if it was worth saving. I told her Acadia was a good idea, in theory, and that the synths staying there were innocent and should be protected until proven otherwise. This seemed to reassure her. She still wants to stay, for the time being, but this has given her a great deal to consider.

Neither of us were in any frame of mind to stay put in that place. The only other option was to return to Far Harbor. We were greeted by the sight of Allen Lee, the gruff weapons shop owner, with his gun pointed at a Child of Atom. Avery looked on with horror as he gave his speech to a small crowd of Harbormen and women, trying to find some way to stop him.

We hurried forward, “What’s going on?”

“This doesn’t concern you, mainlander,” Allen spat. “This here saboteur meant to cut us off from food and water. Punishment is pretty clear, Captain.”

With a heavy sigh, Avery took stock of the crowd and conceded, “Do what you must.”

The Child of Atom died. A cry went up from among the crowd, “You were right, Allen!”

He was bolstered, vindicated as he challenged Avery, “Now will you listen to sense? The Children of Atom need to be wiped clean off this island.”

Avery was not impressed. “You've had your blood today. I can't stomach any more of it. All of you, show’s over. Go home.”

The crowd dispersed, leaving the body outside the gate, abandoned.

“You were right,” Valentine said. “There’s no justice in this place. Saboteur or not, this execution was just one man looking for trouble, a mob hoping for something to blame. If we’d hauled Dima down here...” He didn’t finish the thought. He didn’t need to.

We returned to the private room for rent in the Last Plank. Dima needs time to prepare a volunteer to sacrifice themselves and become another person. We will take full advantage of that fact and stay a few days in Far Harbor. Valentine asked if we would tell Avery what we found. I doubt she would thank us for ripping away what she perceives as her life, her identity. It wouldn’t be the first time I hid the truth to save a life, and it likely won’t be the last.

I sat on the bed, writing the above when Valentine leaned against the wall across from me, arms folded. “You know, if he's as smart as he had to have been, he's not laughing.” I glanced up, puzzled. “From his corner of Hell,” he clarified.

I scoffed, “Why not? Everyone in the Institute talked about the sacrifices he made, the great work he did in the name of their ideal, their vision.”

“That vision involved a race of slaves underground serving humanity for the rest of time with the surface as their experiment dumping ground. Bit different than stopping three groups from destroying each other on a small island.”

“We are using the end to justify the means. And I agreed to it.”

“Yeah,” he sighed, “but if we can't hold back an angry mob, and a whole lot of innocent lives are lost, then that's on us. We've seen what the people here are like. Dima says he killed a person to protect his people. That prejudiced jackass selling guns down the street uses the same excuse for killing every Child of Atom he sees. At least Dima seems to feel guilty about it.”

“Valentine, if it were different, if we knew Acadia would be safe, would you have him executed? It's the penalty here for the crime of murder.”

“And sabotage, apparently,” he grumbled, lighting a cigarette, “and who knows what else. I don't like covering this up. Dima needs to pay for his crimes, but at the same time… it's strange, knowing he got me out of the Institute. That he could have been family.”

“Do you want him to be?”

“That's what I've been asking myself since we met him.” He shook his head, “Why do you think he hid that memory, the one of us fighting? He recognized me, knew we left together, but then was it a blank? He knew I was gone, but that was it?”

I shrugged, “If it's true that he hid the other memories because of his guilt, then that may have been the case for the memory of the fight. He probably thought you were dead, or at the very least that he would never see you again.”

Valentine sat down beside me, “I wish I could remember more about him… eh, then again, maybe I don't. Maybe it would just make this whole business worse, if that's possible.”

I placed my hand on his, “We’ll get through. As someone very dear to me once said, ‘I know the night just got darker, but it won’t last forever.’”

He smiled, just a little, but a smile all the same. “Was he right?”

“He was.”

He chuckled, softly. “Here’s hoping it proves true a second time around. Thanks, partner.”

We decided to stay a couple of days in Far Harbor and do what we can to help the people here. They certainly need it, but more importantly even if this plan works, even if the Children of Atom can be made docile, the hostility the people feel for every outsider is only going to cause more conflict further down the road. So, we will show them not all outsiders are things to be feared.

For 12 years my mother was able to keep me away from my father until he was able to find me, she had got into a relationship with my step father when I was 6 who was the hero who saved her. We all begun a new life and things were perfect.

Then I was 12 years old and my father found me he then brainwashed me into believing my mum was crazy and should never of kept me away from him and my grandmother. I was then put straight into a state of cognitive dissonance not believing what was right or wrong and who to believe I made excuses for him, I didn’t ever have the best relationship with my mother so I thought hey I’ve got 2 messed up parents here fighting over my rights to make my own decisions for myself. I later down the line realised my mother keeping me away from my father was ultimately the best thing she has ever done for me looking back.

I was 12 when I decided to leave to go to live with my father, my grandmother had just retired from 25 years in the civil service my father knew he was coming into money from her as he exploited her so much, so to make himself look good to the family he booked us a trip to Disneyland Florida of course the intention of this trip was for himself and to make the family think he is some kinda decent man even though not one person likes him or has one good thing to say about him.

I was just 12 so I didn’t truly understand and went and had the time of my life for 2 weeks, the only good memories I have from my biological father. Once he had lost control of me or anything in his life... that’s when the physical abuse came to fore he wanted me to supply him with money I just couldn’t of had at that age or find it, we lived in absolute squaller conditions. bills were Hardly never payed, rent, Had bailiffs knocking on the door alot, my father was a coach driver he travelled so much leaving me to fend for myself at just 12 years old, I had no money, my dad took in so many stray cats that couldn’t be taken care of properly so I had to bury so many every month, when he was back off his 2 week trips there would be many women in and out of the house then once their usefulness had run out they would be discarded and onto the next. He would make porn tapes of these women and label them as Disney films on the shelf my horror when I realised they wasn’t Disney films sickening is an understatement.

I couldn’t even afford to get to school sometimes or I’d get there If the school had contacted my father and he was forced to place me there because he was scared of facing court or prison. But I still had no motivation to stay I was thousands of miles up the country from anyone other than him, I used to skip school so much to the point I didn’t even do my exams The day my GCSE’s were taking place I couldn’t even get to school my father was away for 2 weeks and I had £10 for this period of time to survive on £5 of that would be to get to school. I’d sometimes have to fraud his signature on the child maintenance book and cash out the money just To live!

He brainwashed the entire family into the fact I was just a troubled teenager and turned everyone against me whilst isolating me thousands of miles from them. I did anything I could to survive for myself just from the age of 12 for 5 years this hell continued, I used to in order to get by as I had to do everything and learn how to do everything cook, clean, iron, pretend I was older to get part time jobs, meet older guys like 18 to go out with and get food or go to pubs with. I was 30 before I was 30. This derogatory I was subjected to then led me into hands of men just like him right up until the end of last year. I didn’t think I could meet someone as abhorrent as my father until I met my ex narc Matt. The way they are both wired is identical except matt never layed a finger on me he just terrorised me emotionally and financially and left me for dead once he got what he wanted like my father it was always about him. That’s the thing with narcissists the whole fucking world revolves around their own selfish needs who cares about the lives they pillage just to get what they want?

I was 16 when I met my first narcissistic boyfriend Chris he was 19 at the time this man I moved in with me at the time as he was my “protection” so I called him forgetting how violent he really was at the time Just like my father however he worked and did semi pay his way but my dad saw him as a threat, I worked 12 hour shifts in a mail sorting office to survive, they never got along and my father would say my ex Chris was sleeping with any of his girlfriends he had living with us at the time I don’t know how true it is still as my father is a pathological liar. I was just 17 when I woke up one morning and couldn’t handle the conditions I had been subjected to for 5 years, I was exhausted, drained and battered.

My father kicked Chris out I had only been with him a year, and I was heartbroken but I just couldn’t handle any of it anymore so I packed my things a small suitcase with minimal possessions as I had hardly anything I then got a bus to Leeds coach station And begged a coach driver to let me on the coach for free and I’d arrange payment at the other end 9 hour trip back to my mothers luckily the coach driver was empathetic let me sit at the back and even bought me something to eat at the service station.

I got off the coach and I didn’t have a mobile at the time with credit so I had to use somebody else’s I rang my mum and told her I was at the coach station and she must come and get me I was in bits. My father had conditioned them to believe I was the problem and convincing her and my step father was the hardest thing I had to do. “My mum just kept saying 2 things well I shouldn’t of let you go but you wanted to and this is why it’s ended like this”

My downward spiral continued for years to come all my wounds From my father were never healed properly from the age of 12-33 I ended up dating 2 more narcissists the last one being the worst. I talk about this in my book I’m currently working on it’s so important to understand why we end up repeating patterns.

Moral of the story here is Narcissists do not coparent, children are used as weapons to isolate and control their victim they don’t have children because they want them, they have children because there’s something in it for them on many occasions. If there isn’t then they will abandon them and you until one day they think well I could gain something by Showing up in my child’s life again after years of neglecting and confusing them. They don’t give a shit and if they gain custody of their children it’s an explosion waiting to happen just like my story I learnt the hardest way as I chose not to listen to the reasons why my mother kept me away from this evil man I thought was supposed to be my loving, doting father who genuinely cared because he spent years tracking me down for his own selfish reasons not because he loved me or cared.

I urge anyone who has children to the narcissist please fight for custody and keep them away from their father it’s the best outcome, I don’t have children of my own and can’t have them but I wouldn’t wish the abhorrent abuse I endured at the hands of my father on any child or mother of their child. Your child will be better off for it in their adulthood not knowing that their father was an monster and a disgrace of humanity who never had an interest in the wellbeing or existence of their child unless there was something in it for them!

Pete Brungardt do not represent him in Congress, Larry Halloran said he felt he had to drive from Mulvane to Salina to join in on what his website called the “Great Kansas RINO (Republican in Name Only) Hunt” at the Salina Area Chamber of Commerce candidate forum Saturday. “Just because they don’t represent me doesn’t mean they don’t affect the state I live in,” Halloran said. Halloran, chairman of the Wichita-South Central Kansas 912 Group, joined Salinans Bob and Brenda Bowser and five others on the “safari” in an attempt to inform citizens about the voting records of the Salina Republicans with literature they handed out at the door. One woman attending the meeting wore an orange button with the picture of a rhinoceros inside crosshairs. The sheets detailed votes on social and financial issues on which they disagreed with Brungardt and Roth. Brungardt and Roth both declined to comment on the group or the literature. Brenda Bowser said the group handed out the literature until they were stopped by the representatives from the chamber. Don Weiser, senior vice president of the Salina Area Chamber of Commerce, said the candidate forum is not a place for people to campaign against representatives. He said the handing out of literature “won’t happen again.” RINO Hunt Bowser said the group that attended was a coalition of grass roots tea party leaders that get together and tell voters about their representatives across the state. Halloran said Roth and Brungardt have shown they are not Republicans, despite having the party affiliation. “They belong to a party with a platform of principled positions,” Halloran said. “Yet, these two vote consistently against those positions. When a person says they are representing principled positions, they should uphold them.” Halloran said candidates have little room to negotiate, unless it is deciding whether to pay for a project with cash or credit and what rates and terms should be used. Bowser said the group of tea party members are going after Republicans they believe are pretending to be party members. “We are on a RINO Hunt,” Bowser said. “We are going out to let neighborhoods know what their representatives are doing. We are basically handing out their voting records and saying here is what they say and do. It is not consistent with being a conservative.” Sending a message While Roth and Brungardt were the main “targets” of the group, Bowser said the group is watching Reps. Steven Johnson and Tom Arpke closely. BIOGRAPHY:

They weren’t anything special, at least not at first.

The Weston family was completely ordinary in every way, and Alex Weston was no different. Alex was smart, but not too smart, quiet, but not too quiet, and kind, but not too kind, just as their parents taught them. They were raised to keep their eyes to the floor and stay out of trouble, spending more time on their computer than they did with other people at their parents’ encouragement, with the purpose of being prepared for a nondescript tech job at the company their father worked at when the time came. Things were simple, and they were happy.

They didn’t understand, as a child, that their parents were afraid of that which was other.

Perhaps if Alex had been special in any small way, if their family had been anything other than utterly normal, utterly content to accept the lies that were fed to them, perhaps their path would have been different. Perhaps they would not have been forced to face the reality of the world. Perhaps they would have had that tech job, would’ve still been known as Alex Weston.

Alex saw human cruelty early on in their life. They saw it in the way their parents spoke about the extraterrestrials who lived on Earth alongside all of them, the way they told them to stop talking to that Luytan. They saw it in the otherness that was created by the government between people nearly the same as them, in the bullying they endured at the hands of their peers because of their intense interest in these others. And then in their peers’ refusal to accept them because of their own differences. They learned how much human beings loved to hate when they were young. They learned that anger was beneficial. Anger could keep them safe from becoming like all of the others.

And it changed them.

They could pinpoint down to the millisecond when it changed. It might’ve been before, if they were someone else; it would have been when they saw the way their peers liked to taunt and beat extraterrestrials, it would have been when they first heard their own parents muttering slurs against their friends when they thought Alex could not hear. Someone else would have become a hero.

But Alex was not noble. Alex was selfish.

It came when it was personal, as if something finally clicked once the hatred was turned on them. They were a teenager, when their human friends started to whisper about them, whispering that they wanted to be like the aliens, that they’d probably even grow up and try to marry one, as if that was something disgusting. They made the mistake of speaking too loudly, of making certain that Alex heard.  At that moment they understood what anger was good for. Those humans would never say anything of that sort again they made certain of it, first with their fists, and then, at home over the course of a few weeks, in the darkness of their bedroom on their laptop, as they destroyed their lives with a few keystrokes.

After that, they made themself into something special, different from other humans, with the express purpose of making certain each and every human was punished for their hatred. First in simple ways, but with the ultimate goal of complete destruction.

It happened in steps. They knew that they could not do what they wanted as Alex Weston. So they started at creating their new identity, setting themself up for what they wanted. Small hacks, ransoming private data for small sums of money, more annoyances than any real danger, practicing for more from the comfort of their parents’ home, always making certain the victims knew who their attacker was. They moved out, heading to the center Albuquerque where they knew they would have better opportunity to accomplish their goal. And on their way out, they created several false warrants for their parents’ arrest due to tax fraud, just to give them a little taste of what happened to those humans who were cruel, and full of hatred.

It was a long game, but it was ultimately worth it. Deimos Nox had a reputation amongst the hackers and cyberpirates before Alex Weston was, for all intents and purposes, dead. Deimos Nox arrived in Albuquerque with a reputation that preceded them. Humans and extraterrestrials alike whispered about them, not in mocking now, but in fear. The feeling was intoxicating.

Nearly as intoxicating as it was to be truly free and independent for the first time, no more expectations but their own, the ability to be more than ordinary suddenly easy. They were able to do their work without the threat of judgement, but, perhaps more importantly, they were able to live. No matter how much they wished to distance themself from humans, it was impossible not to fall prey to human wants and desires. In the beginning it was just a few nights out, a bit of fun, perhaps sometimes at the expense of others, but the longer they were there, the more it grew. Their hunger grew and it grew as they experienced more of humans, more of the others, just like their anger, a strange dichotomy that soon came to define them. Every moment they did not spend diligently working toward their ultimate goal, they spent indulging in every desire and fantasy that they could dream up.

And it was good.

Deimos’ ego grew along with their reputation. Word of not only their skill with a keyboard spread, but also of their defiant and often rambunctious personality. There were rumors of the fights they got into with others while under the influence of drink or sometimes drugs, more often than not for the fun of it rather than because of any real slight against them. When not hidden behind their screens, they became more than just angry, they became mischievous, taking delight in any inconvenience they could cause, especially to those smug and wicked humans who hated so passionately.

And if their ultimate goal suffered even a little bit for the fun that they liked to indulge in, well, they did not mind taking a little longer bringing about the descent of humankind, since their fellow humans seemed to be doing so well at the job anyway. Especially not when the opportunity to strike seemed to be lining up in their favor, with an android finally willing to work with them, and the interspecies cooperation council bringing so many important figures to one place. They can feel the breakthrough on the horizon. They can feel their moment coming, and they will not allow it to pass. They have seen what humans can do to any poor soul left vulnerable with them, and it is time for it to stop.

After all, Deimos is not noble. Deimos is selfish.

MUSING + HEAD-CANONS.

HEAD-CANONS:

+Originally, their so-called grand plan really just consisted of destroying as many human lives as possible with the skills that they had acquired from their years of cybercriminal activity. Why they took that task upon themself was most likely because of the imagined importance they placed upon themself from a young age, the need to be something special. They didn’t really have specific ideas for how to do what they wanted, though, but they mostly assumed that they would know when they found the right thing. In the interim, they spent their time creating viruses, testing them on smaller targets, local government officials and the like, and trying to find an android who was willing to let them actually take a look inside things. They felt, for some reason, that that would be the key. And it turned out they were right. The idea came to them as they read more and more about the failed androids, specifically the Android 2.0. They realized that was their opportunity. Find the remains of those androids, or the ones who made it out somehow, and finding a way to create more. At the very least, figure out just how to reprogram and hack the current androids to become more like their morally-ambiguous predecessors.

+Contrary to what a lot of their peers believe, they don’t wish they were an extraterrestrial. They’re smart enough to know that the same hatred that humans possess in spades is rampant in every other species that’s made it to Earth as well, but they’re not quite as bold with their hatred of anything different. They simply feel more kindred with nonhumans because they’ve always felt other as well, and they’ve found that extraterrestrials treat them better than other humans do.

+It is not rare for them to fight on behalf of the slights of others, but not because of some sense of righteousness, more so if they see someone else in a situation they have been in. They’ll fight humans for calling extraterrestrials anything less than polite, etc. They don’t discriminate, though. They’re just as likely to punch a rude Centaurian as they are a human, it just so happens that humans are usually a lot more openly impertinent than any other species, which is exactly why Deimos sees their destruction as necessary.

+There’s that John Waters quote about hackers having no style: “Now if you’re a rebel, you’re a hacker. But there’s no hacker look. What is hacker chic? I can’t think of it, you know? Bad posture from being in front of the computer?” WELL DEIMOS HAS A STYLE. They’ve got their own version hacker chic, to the point where it’s almost become a uniform; it’s rare for them to be seen wearing anything different. This uniform of theirs consists of well-tailored suits, usually in leather, velvet, or metallic materials, usually in flamboyant and flashy colors. These expensive, custom-made suits are more often than not paired with their favorite pair of black platform heels, despite their height without heels. Often times, they dye their hair to match whatever color suit they currently love the most. They wear a silver choker with a rose charm around their throat at all times, always a little too tight as if to keep themself focused on their task. One of their favorite aesthetic indulgences is getting their nails done; long acrylics painted metallic, shiny colors. They’ve always been a fan of how their nails sound while typing, but they wouldn’t tell anyone that.

+Also they wear sunglasses even when they don’t need to, and no one really knows if it’s because their eyes are sensitive to the light since they spend so much time in the dark hacking and planning, or if they’re really just that much of an asshole. It’s definitely the second one.

+On a similar note, over the years they have collected dozens of tattoos that cover the majority of their upper body, except their face, most of which are tech and space related. Their latest is the solar system and sky that surrounds their head like a half crown, not quite as visible with their hair grown out.

+Deimos wouldn’t consider themself an addict by any means, but they do enjoy indulging freely in alcohol, and on particularly intense nights, recreational drugs as well. It takes their confidence and makes it even more outwardly focused. They get louder and brasher, and definitely more annoying along with that. This is when they become a joker, but perhaps not in the traditional sense, as their “jokes” often end up more mean-spirited than funny.

+Despite their years of hacking, or maybe because of it, they’re cocky. They don’t think about the consequences of any of their actions, because they had never had to face any of them before. They’ve never been caught for the lives they’re ruined, and they are confident that they won’t be caught in their attempts to create human-hating android software.

PLOTS + CONNECTIONS:

{hell is empty and all the devils are here.} Something big happens, something that makes their dislike for their own race spiral downward, something that makes them start acting rashly, less careful about what they’re doing. Maybe it causes them to draw unwanted attention to their experiments. I’m really interested in pushing them to extremes, making things uncomfortable for them when they kind of felt invulnerable to be honest.

{have more than you show.} I want to see them work so hard and so single-mindedly on achieving their goal, that they get out of hand when they actually do let themself relax and they possibly end up self-sabotaging by going too far, either in their actual research, or in accidentally telling someone more than they would want to, because as cocky as they are with their average hacking, up until now they’ve been keeping the details of their grand plan secret.

{crack me open.} I’d love to explore some sort of plot where Deimos is actually given the chance to start experimenting with androids and their software, in an attempt to better understand and possibly start work on their own software. This obviously goes with their connection with THE SYSTEMS, but I’d also really love to see how this could become something bigger, like maybe someone else gives them access to something they’ve been looking for, possibly attracting some kind of attention from either the government or someone with more power who wouldn’t approve. I want to seem them get in trouble, man.

{the more I hate, the more he follows me.} Who doesn’t love a good unrequited? This would be someone who genuinely likes Deimos, which could take the form of about a million different things, but whatever it is Deimos doesn’t like it. Maybe they almost idolize them and their ideals, maybe they’re really amused by all the petty fighting that they do when they party, whatever it is, they’re interested in them, and Deimos is having none of it. At least for now.

{the more I love, the more he hateth me.} Same sentiment as above, but reversed, and probably something that would cause even more problems for Deimos than the former option.  I’d be interested in exploring some sort of romantic/emotional connection, probably with a human, that would make Deimos question, even just a little bit, what they were planning on doing. Nothing grand, but just someone who manages to plant a seed of doubt in their head that maybe they’re not doing the right thing, all because they accidentally started to care about someone. I don’t like my characters to have happiness, though, so fuck it actually being a completely mutual thing.

{the matrix.} Considering the goals that THE MATRIX has of figuring out androids and possibly reprogramming older generations of them, I’d love to have some sort of plot that involves some sort of partnership with the two of them, probably begrudging, because of Deimos’ ultimate goals. It could go any number of ways, though, and I think it would be really fun to explore a relationship like that and what it could mean for either of them.

Deimos used to love lavender.

Loved lavender in any and every form that they could find it in. They wore lavender perfume, they painted their room lavender, consumed anything that had lavender in it, would steal their mother’s lavender nail polish and paint their toes, even wanted to dye their hair lavender, although their parents didn’t allow that last one to happen. The smell of lavender, the sight of the color, made them feel safe, warm.

It reminded them of their childhood, a time before they realized the reality of humankind. It reminded them of late springs in the suburbs, their mother pruning the lavender bushes that their father had planted the very first year they had moved there, even before they were born. Spending the warm months eating lavender bread, drinking lavender lemonade, sneaking out in the middle of the night to lie amongst the lavender bushes and try to make out the constellations in the sky.

Now it reminds them of something else.

Now it reminds them of the night they came home and told their parents about the friend they had made, as they all sat around and drank lavender tea, their father telling them to grow up and stop associating with freaks from other planets, or that they would end up in trouble. Now it reminds them of their mother catching them trying on her lavender pumps, of her telling them to “act like a man,” that they’d never have a normal life if they kept insisting on “being different.” Then lavender started feeling strange. Then the color of their walls started feeling oppressive and judgmental, the smell of fresh lavender wafting through open windows in the summer was suffocating instead of comforting, the taste made them feel sick to their stomach.

Now, they prefer roses.

iLearn.TW Magazine: A Response from Taichung Skeptics in the Pub

Let me never fall into the vulgar mistake of dreaming that I am persecuted whenever I am contradicted. -  Ralph Waldo Emerson A new English magazine can be found on the racks around Taichung. It’s a magazine that is concerning to Taichung Skeptics in the Pub. Yes, for some of it’s content, but more so for the style of thinking it represents.

The magazine, ilearn.tw Magazine, makes claims like the Earth being flat and 9-11 being an inside job. They are claims which have been addressed elsewhere, so we won’t go into them here. If you’d like to learn more, please follow these links.

More important than addressing the claims made is to address the underlying thought process behind the magazine. Before I do though, let me take a second to explain who skeptics are and why we do what we do.

Scientific skepticism is not a set of beliefs, like ghosts aren’t real or that Elvis is dead, for example. Skepticism is a process that uses critical thinking and scientific evidence to evaluate whether something is true or not. Many who engage in skepticism are motivated by a compassion to help people think better and avoid scams, frauds and cons. Skeptics also believe in changing one’s mind when they are provided evidence of them being in error.

You might say that skeptics will believe in anything, given the right evidence. But skeptics will subject that evidence to reliable, repeatable methods of verification, a robust kicking of the tires, so to speak. If the evidence holds up, the skeptic will accept it as true, at least tentatively, as there is always the chance that even newer evidence could overturn it.

In many ways, skepticism is a great unifying and democratizing force. Who you are, regardless of race, nationality, age, gender, level of education, or special qualifications, is irrelevant to the skeptic. All that matters is the evidence and arguments you bring to support your claims.

Compare this line of thinking with that on display in the iLearn.tw Magazine, which one could describe as conspiratorial. That label is not meant to be dismissive, as stated before skeptics will consider any and all evidence, Instead, we use the term to be descriptive. Critical freethinkers, or truthers are also common names used by people who subscribe to these ideas and far be it from us to tell people which labels they should use for themselves. For ease though, we’ll continue to use the term conspiratorial thinking, but again, we do not use it do deride, dismiss, or degrade, merely to describe.

Conspiratorial thinking is characterized by several things; (Lewandosky 1-6 https://youtu.be/0TELiwR0Olk 7-8)

1) The suspicion of nefarious intent, real or perceived. 2) Perceived victimization, either of oneself or of a community. 3) A denial or refusal to believe any facts that do not agree with one’s beliefs. Sometimes called confirmation bias. 4) A denial of things occurring by coincidence. 5) Holding or switching between beliefs that are contradictory or mutually exclusive, but are perceived to refute an official or generally accepted version of events. 6) Reasoning that holds any evidence against the conspiracy to be in fact evidence of a conspiracy 7) An unwillingness to revise or update one’s beliefs 8) Attaching one’s identity to the position one holds and a definition of an in-group and out-group based on who does or does not hold certain beliefs.

While reading the magazine, and we do suggest you read it if you are interested, pay attention and see if you notice any of these lines of thinking on display. We believe you’ll find most, if not all of them.

Now, we are happy to discuss the facts in the magazine, or just agree to disagree with them as suggested by the magazine, at least for the sake of this article. However, we must take a stand against the kind of thinking used to reach the conclusion in the magazine.

Some people have talked about living in a post-truth society, and claims of fake news used to dismiss any and all facts that do not agree with one’s beliefs are rampant. The problem with this, and the conspiratorial mindset, is that once you accept it as a valid way of thinking, there is literally nothing you can’t believe. You can believe that the world is both flat and hollow, or that globe spanning conspiracies are both highly adept at what they do and are constantly making mistakes that show what they are up to. Not only does this way of thinking make it possible to hold any number of mutually exclusive beliefs, it offers no way to correct any errors that were made in the process of reaching those beliefs.

The old saying, “if you don’t stand for something, you’ll fall for anything,” comes to mind. In this case, perhaps the saying should be adjusted to, “if you don’t anchor your ideas to something, then you will be able to believe in anything.” When the only anchor one holds to is being contrary to the “official story,” there is no end to the kind of things you can believe and the actions you will be willing to take and justify based on those beliefs.

The greatest factor leading to people engaging in conspiratorial thinking, is exposure to conspiracy theories. In a time of looming health and climate crises, clear, evidence-based thinking is needed more than ever. Unfortunately, magazines like this one have the chance of creating more people who are willing to dismiss these and other important issues as hoaxes or conspiracies.

Of course, a short aside concerning the publisher of this magazine is warranted. Skepticism should not be about directing ill-will toward people for their ideas, and we do not hold any ill-will towards the publisher of this magazine. In fact, many people have spoken of his good nature. He has a right to his ideas, and the right to publish them. If you get a chance to speak with him,  go and talk to him about his ideas and what his motivations are. See what he thinks and why he thinks it. For our own part, we have extended an invitation to him to come and speak at a future Skeptics in the Pub event so that we can understand him and his ideas better.

Still we must behoove the Taichung public to not take part in the kind of thinking to be found on display in the magazine. If you find yourself engaging in this kind of think or notice any of the characteristic listed above present in your own thought processes, we would suggest you take steps to find a more reliable method of coming to knowledge.

What you believe, should not become who you are. You should be able to admit when you are wrong, revise your beliefs, and be happy to know fewer and fewer wrong things as you learn more and more. Skepticism is a path that leads in that direction. It doesn’t mean you have to accept each and every part of an official story. It doesn’t mean that you can’t have suspicions about people in power. A curious detail appears in the press release announcing the arrest of Ghislaine Maxwell on charges of conspiring with Jeffrey Epstein to sexually abuse minors. On Thursday, Audrey Strauss, the newly appointed acting U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, announced that Maxwell had been charged in a six-count indictment accusing her of enticing and transporting a minor to travel to engage in criminal sexual activity, conspiracy to commit those offenses and perjury in connection with a sworn deposition. Jeffrey Epstein’s ‘Madam’ Ghislaine Maxwell Is Behind Bars. Who's Next?The charges were not a surprise in light of comments by Strauss’s predecessor, Geoffrey S. Berman, last year after Epstein died of an apparent suicide in jail. Berman pledged to the victims of Epstein’s alleged sex trafficking crimes that “our investigation of the conduct charged in the Indictment—which included a conspiracy count—remains ongoing.”The unusual part of Strauss’s announcement is that the case is assigned to the office’s Public Corruption Unit. The case against Epstein had also been assigned to this unit, which typically focuses on crimes committed by government officials, employees and contractors. Elie Honig, a former prosecutor in the Southern District of New York, told Law and Crime that sex trafficking cases are typically handled out of the office’s Violent and Organized Crime unit. So why would this case be assigned to the Public Corruption Unit? Prosecutors assigned to such a unit are trained and experienced in handling some of the nuanced issues that arise when government officials are targets of investigations. Charges often involve sophisticated bribery, extortion or fraud schemes in which the parties deliberately speak in coded language to maintain plausible deniability. The case law is replete with gray areas in which quid pro quo arrangements breaching public trust are spun as mere horse-trading politics. Public officials hire top lawyers, and, as natural risk-takers with much to lose, are less inclined to plead guilty than other defendants. As a result, public corruption prosecutors must have the skill set to not only investigate a complex case but also to take it to trial. Maxwell is not herself a public official, but maybe she is not the last to be indicted in this case. The assignment of her case to the Public Corruption Unit suggests that the investigation may touch on subjects who are current or former government officials. Facing a potentially lengthy prison sentence if she is convicted, Maxwell has a strong incentive to cooperate with prosecutors by providing substantial assistance in the investigation and prosecution of others in exchange for a recommendation of leniency. Last year Alex Acosta resigned as U.S. Labor Secretary over his involvement in the case when he served as U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Florida in 2008. He negotiated a deal with Epstein that allowed him to plead guilty to a single count of soliciting prostitution and serve a 13-month state prison, most of it at his own office on work release. The agreement also included provisions not to charge some of Epstein’s employees or “any potential co-conspirators,” highly unusual language that releases from criminal exposure even defendants whose identities and conduct are unknown. When he negotiated the deal, Acosta ignored the normal practice of notifying the victims. Although no criminal allegations have been filed against Acosta, if the investigation were to include examination of his conduct, that could explain the involvement of the Public Corruption Unit. In addition, the reference to “potential co-conspirators” suggests that there may have been other people who assisted Epstein in recruiting, grooming or transporting underage girls to engage in criminal sexual activity. This description could also include anyone who engaged in sexual conduct with the underage girls. It is a crime to knowingly patronize a person under the age of 18 to engage in a commercial sex act. Because Acosta’s non-prosecution deal bound only the Southern District of Florida, the Southern District of New York is free to charge any of Epstein’s co-conspirators. Again, the assignment of the case to the Public Corruption Unit raises a fair inference that these subjects could be current or former government officials. The charges against Maxwell allege that her crimes occurred in New York, Florida and London. Anyone who traveled with Epstein to these locations or who visited him there and engaged in commercial sex acts with girls they knew to be under 18 could be charged with a federal offense. Epstein was friends with many prominent people, including former President Bill Clinton and President Donald Trump, who once said of Epstein, “It is even said that he likes beautiful women as much as I do, and many of them are on the younger side.” While Clinton and Trump would both qualify as public officials, their friendships with Epstein alone are insufficient to merit investigation without articulable factual allegations of criminal conduct. Such an allegation has been made about Britain’s Prince Andrew, whom the Southern District of New York has sought to interview. One of Epstein’s victims, Virginia Roberts Giuffre, has accused Prince Andrew of having sex with her when she was 17. In June, Berman issued a statement that the British royal had not been cooperative with his prosecutors. Berman stated that Prince Andrew was seeking to “falsely portray himself to the public as eager and willing to cooperate with the investigation into Epstein, even though the Prince has not given an interview to federal authorities, has repeatedly declined our request to schedule such an interview. . . If Prince Andrew is, in fact, serious about cooperating with the ongoing federal investigation, our doors remain open, and we await word of when we should expect him.” Prince Andrew, whether as witness, subject or target, would certainly qualify as a public official such that assignment of the case to the Public Corruption Unit would make sense. In the coming months, we will see movement on the Maxwell case, as she either goes to trial, pleads guilty or otherwise resolves her case. We may also see additional charges against others who assisted Epstein or who patronized the girls he abused.
