The Ostrogoths
Tumblr media
The Ostrogoths are one of two major groups which made up the Goths. The word literally means “the eastern Goths”. It is assumed that classical writers divided the Goths into east and west as a reference to where they lived, and not as tribal identity or origin story.
Archaeologically, there are plenty of similarities between the Ostrogoths and the Visigoths. For example the so-called eagle brooches (image above) are very similar. However the Ostrogoths were more generous in grave goods than their western “cousins”, with most finds being exceptionally decorated.
The earliest cultural expansion of the Goths was located in modern Ukraine. Hunnic expansion forced the goths further south to southwest into Rome. The Ostrogoths were caught between the Huns and the Romans and often switched sides. After the Hunnic empire fell, the road to Rome was open.
Theodorik entered modern day Italy with his troupes and made Ravenna the capital of his empire (instead of the city of Rome). The Western Roman empire had “fallen”, a Germanic king ruled Italia and the mythology of Theodorik was born.
Grave goods found in Cesena, Italia. 5th century.

He who rides between the Nine Worlds,
Eight legs moving swiftly,
my horn is raised to you.
For in your arms
I find my solace,
and in your words I’m free from harm.

your one eye guides my sight,
reading ancient script

jörmungandr, the world serpent (asteroid 471926)
Tumblr media
Jörmungandr is the son of the god Loki and the giantess Angrboða. Jörmungandr and his siblings, Hel and Fenrir, were living in Jotunheim when a prophecy was brought forth to Odin that one of the children of Loki would cause devastation in the future. With this knowledge Odin ordered that they be removed from the enemy land of the giants while they were young; Jörmungandr was hurled into the sea by Odin, Odin had hoped that the ocean would destroy the serpent. Jörmungandr grew to be an extremely large serpent as he consumed the sea - he was so large that he could encircle the entire world. Jörmungandr is often thought of as the original ouroboros. Jörmungandr is considered the archenemy of Thor. Thor's hatred of the creature stems from a myth in which Thor and company visited the land of the giants - the gods came to the gates of a castle but could not open the gates. The bars were luckily widely spaced in the land of the giants, so they were able to slip in - the king of the castle was put off by their unexpected arrival and said to them if they wanted hospitality, they would have to complete three tasks. Lift the king's cat from the ground - Thor was incapable of completing the task, he was only capable of lifting a paw from the ground. The next task was to drink the entirety of the castle's drinking horn - Thor who normally could handle his drink was not capable of completing this task again. Thor was irate and demanded that he fight one of the king's fiercest warriors as the final task. The king stated he could fight the castle's nurse who was an old woman - he failed this task too. The king confessed to them that he had used magic to trick the gods: the cat was Jörmungandr who Thor nearly pulled from the ocean, the horn was linked to the ocean and Thor nearly drained the ocean, and the old woman was actually the personification of age which no one has ever beaten. Thor was angered by this and went to swing at the king, but the king and his castle disappeared; from then on the king and Jörmungandr were considered enemies of Thor. Some believe this king was Loki in disguise who was attempting to free his son from his confinement. In one myth recounted in Prose Edda, Thor fishes for the serpent and fails to pull him up and kill him. During Ragnarök all three of Loki's children would join the chaos and battle against the gods - Jörmungandr would be killed by Thor at this battle, but Thor is thought to have died from one of Jörmungandr's poisonous bite. IN MY OPINION Jörmungandr in a chart can symbolize a) unknown and unexpected transformation, b) where you are large than most things, c) where people constantly try to end you, d) your connection to the ocean, and/or e) how banishment changes you.

Wild Hunt
When I previewed the anthology of Romantic poetry and noted a chapter focusing on Gothicism and surrealism, I immediately thought of writing a poetic exercise about the Wodan/Odin and his ghostly companions in the Wild Hunt in the harshest nights of winter.  As I finally got around to writing this exercise, I also decided to alter the structure from what I’ve seen within that anthology.  I’d get around to trying internal rhyme across lines again instead of strictly using ending rhymes.  I used four stresses per line instead of five stresses.  During the process of drafting this, I was pleased with how this seemed to turn out, though it’s best if I leave the judgement to those who see this.
They say that during the darkest coldest
Winters, when the harshest storms blow,
The god Wodan rides his steed,
Leading spirits inside the gales.
Sometimes, the phantoms are said to be Valkyries,
Finding Adam’s dying descendants.
Sometimes, ghosts of humans themselves
Are said to be the ones riding with Wodan.
Other say that elven hunters
Wielding longbows chase game.
All accounts convey danger.
They say that great rewards are promised
To those who demonstrate power and reverence
In willingly bracing against the rush.
The prevailing winter alone can be deadly
With its stinging, chilling toll on the flesh,
Yet the rush of the phantoms can sweep the soul
Away to whatever eldritch sphere.
Any who endeavor to so personally
Face the mythic warlord Wodan
Would need a more compelling reason
To venture outdoors into the tempest.
Stories of the Wild Hunt are told
Mostly as curiosities from the Old World.
Would anyone gamble life and limb
To be entangled within a spooky story?
An impoverished father may desire abundance.
A persecuted lesbian may desire acceptance.
Those are merely two examples.
Surely hundreds more exist.
What if the tales contain ample
Grains of truth of nature and life
Even for perfectly sane minds?

The Langobards
Tumblr media
The Langobards/Lombards/Longobards are an Italic-Germanic tribe with origins in southern Scandinavia around the first centuries B.C. and A.D.
Their steady migration southward can be retraced by archaeological artifacts, which show their Scandinavian origin.
Their early connections to (the geographical city of) Rome made them very influential in the Western Roman world; on financial, military, religious but also law practice and kingship levels.
The Lombards were quickly christened and were the founding fathers of many religious institutions in northern Italy, ruled Italy, and adapted/adopted Roman Law, making for a culturally rich period. Their capital Pavia is located in the Italian province of Lombardy, named after, you guessed it.
It has to be said (it sounds like a fake fact but is not) that their name means “Long Beards”. In many European languages the descriptive name can be heard in “Langobard” also written as “Longobard”.

WODAN, a Japanese studio founded by veteran game designers Kenichi Iwao and Tatsuya Yoshikawa, has announced Shinonome, a roguelike game based around the concept of a haunted house from the Edo period. It will launch in Early Access for PC via Steam on November 11.
Iwao previously worked at Capcom, Square Enix, Studio 4°C, DeNA, and Oriflamme, while Yoshikawa was previously employed by Capcom, DeNA, Nintendo, Oriflamme, and Sanzigen.
The Early Access version of Shinonome will feature all three main game modes. While each mode shares many commonalities, they will grow more distinct over the course of Early Access. User feedback will allow the developer to offer a more “multifarious experience with improved tutorials, a wider range of enemy types including bosses, additional tools, and a more engaging storyline.” The Early Access period is expected to last two to four months, but may extend further based on feedback.
Here is an overview of the game, via its Steam page:

I’m kind of thinking about making a third tumblr account dedicated to Germanic and Viking archaeology. Viking stuff is often romanticized, Frankish stuff gets all the attention while Merovingian stuff is hugely under appreciated. And if you look for anything Anglo-Saxon, you only get to see Sutton Hoo results.
Would anyone be interested in that?

Fill me heart with hope,

It is you who I hail,
who I drink my mead to,
and who guides me hand in magical might.
Wishmaker,
Wise One,
Allfather Above,
I shout your name is praise,
and raise my spear high.
