Levitating - Head Engineer Mark x Captain Fanfic
“I am sure of nothing so little as my own intentions.”
—Lord Byron
Part Fifteen:
Scene: Invincible II, Captain’s quarters
[MARK feels a little uncomfortable eating breakfast in the CAPTAIN’s room, though he doesn’t quite know why. The CAPTAIN sits a couple feet away from MARK, looking a bit uneasy as well.]
CAPTAIN: So... I’ve never seen the crew quarters. Is your bed as big as this one?
MARK: [glancing down at the queen-sized mattress the two are currently seated on the edge of] Um... ours are more like cots than real beds. I suppose they work well enough for their intended use, but there’s not much extra room.
CAPTAIN: [nodding] Ah, I see. Uh, if you wanted, I could maybe pull some strings and see if I could get you a better room.
MARK: [with a small smile] Oh, no thanks. I’m flattered but I like my room. It’s... cozy.
CAPTAIN: [skeptical] Really?
MARK: Yeah, seriously. And besides, I don’t want anyone to think I’m getting special treatment just because we’re friends.
CAPTAIN: Right...
MARK: [looking over at the CAPTAIN] I know we haven’t officially planned a date yet, but this is kind of like one, isn’t it? Just the two of us, alone, enjoying a meal together.
CAPTAIN: [considering] Hmm... I suppose it kind of is.
MARK: [with a chuckle] To be honest, this is probably better than any date I could’ve planned. I, uh, haven’t had the best luck with dating in the past.
CAPTAIN: [with interest] Oh?
MARK: [with a nervous laugh] Yeah... the last time I dated someone I was still on Earth. Turns out that it’s kind of difficult to pursue a relationship with a person while you’re stuck on a spaceship for... well, however long I’ve been stuck here.
CAPTAIN: I see. So did you try doing the long-distance thing at first?
MARK: For a while, yeah. Needless to say, though, it didn’t work out. Sometime in between the first Invincible blowing up and going back to Earth to start work on this ship, my, uh, ex found someone else.
CAPTAIN: Ouch, that’s rough.
MARK: [shrugging] It’s whatever. I just... I kind of wish I hadn’t walked in on them screwing in our bed.
CAPTAIN: [with raised eyebrows and an incredulous laugh] No way! You really walked in on that?
MARK: [chuckling] Yeah. I mean, I can laugh about it now since it happened so long ago, but at the time it was.... it was devastating. I felt so... betrayed.
CAPTAIN: I can imagine.
MARK: Have you ever... experienced anything like that, Captain? If you don’t mind me asking.
CAPTAIN: Hmm... I don’t think I have. My memories of the past are... fragmented still. Different timelines and all that, I guess. I think there’s a reality where I dated a mayor or something.
MARK: Oooh... fancy.
CAPTAIN: [chuckling] Yeah. Y’know, it’s so weird to have memories of a life I haven’t really lived through. Makes me wonder if this version of me is missing out.
MARK: On what?
CAPTAIN: [with a shrug] I dunno. I just feel like... [the CAPTAIN trails off and shakes their head] Like there’s more to all of this, somehow.
MARK: [confused] What do you mean?
CAPTAIN: Well, I do the same thing every day. I get up, get showered and dressed, grab some breakfast, head back to my room to eat it alone, go to the control room and work until lunchtime, grab lunch and eat it while I’m busy working on stuff, work some more until dinner, eat dinner while doing even more work, finish up the day’s work in the control room until it’s finally time to go to bed, head back to my room and take off my uniform, plop down on my bed and fall asleep. Same routine---every single day. It’s so... monotonous.
MARK: [frowning] What about me? I keep you company.
CAPTAIN: [giving MARK a shy smile] That’s true, I suppose. You’re the one thing that makes my job on this ship tolerable.
MARK: [blushing slightly] Really?
CAPTAIN: Yes, Mark. Sometimes it feels like you’re my only real friend here.
MARK: [flustered] Well, I mean---
CAPTAIN: And, if I’m being completely honest, it’s not hard for me to see a future with you.
MARK: Um---
CAPTAIN: Does that make me sound pathetic? God, probably. This isn’t even a real date and I’m already making a fool of myself.
MARK: No... no, you’re not. Um, Captain, if now is a time for being completely honest, I think I should mention that I, uh, really like you. Like, really really.
CAPTAIN: [with a grin] Yeah? You mean that?
MARK: [nodding] Mhm. I do.
[The CAPTAIN stands up and moves to straddle MARK, wrapping their legs around his waist. He wraps his arms around them so they don’t fall backwards onto the floor. The CAPTAIN then leans in and kisses MARK softly. The two are both fully clothed and neither seems to make a move to remove the other’s clothing. This kiss lasts longer than their first, MARK makes a mental note of.]
MARK: [breathlessly, once the CAPTAIN pulls back slightly] Wow. Isn’t it a bit early in the day for this?
CAPTAIN: [smirking slightly] We can certainly stop if you want to.
MARK: [shaking his head vehemently] That’s not necessary, Captain.
CAPTAIN: [smugly] I’m glad to hear it. Oh, and you can call me Y/N when we’re alone. I think we know each other well enough to skip the formalities in our... private time together.
MARK: Okay, Cap---Y/N.
CAPTAIN: I have half an hour before the rest of the crew expects me to give my morning report. Think we can make the most of our time together before then?
MARK: [with a firm nod] Absolutely.
CAPTAIN: Great. Now how about you show me how well you can follow your Captain’s orders.
