ok this sounds insane but in 2018 i went to a few carnivorous plant talks at the botany conference in minnesota. i got caught up in conversation with one of the guys there who was a huge nepenthes guy who told me a story about another collector in the pacific northwest who'd been buying poached plants, like a huge amount, and eventually got staked out by the fish and wildlife service and arrested and had all his plants seized and went to prison for it. idk if i ever talked about this on this blog before-- i know i liveblogged a lot from that conference but cant remember what all i posted-- but ive avoided talking about it since then because i was never able to find like, news articles or anything covering it, but behold.... we now have proof it was real, and im like 80% sure this was this guy he was talking about. the raid happened in 2016 and they'd been staking them out since 2013. he had nearly 400 plants and had been sourcing many of them from poachers in indonesia and borneo.

remember folks: poaching happens with plants too! it's a huge problem not only in carnvirous plants (nepenthes especially, which this piece is dedicated to talking about) but also in native plant populations in the US, including native carnivorous plant populations (north and south carolina's venus fly traps, california's darlingtonia, and sarracenia from the east coast), native orchids (historically one of the most poached categories), desert plants/cacti/succulents, and slow-growing woody ornamentals (cycads, for example). never buy bare-root plants off ebay or facebook! your best bet is local nurseries (which usually purchase farm-raised plants that do well in a wide range of conditions, and as a result have a healthy population in the wild) or specialty greenhouses (more expensive, but at least in the case of carnivorous plants offer young plants bred from established adult plants in-house, raised in captivity).

hey guys btw there is actually never a good reason to loudly and publicly talk about how much u dislike a fanfic!! Like. let's break this down for a sec:

i don't like it

ok, understandable. i've dnf'd lots of fics because i didn't like them. but the people writing fanfiction are doing it for free and for fun, and you don't know anything about their lives. they could be a young writer just starting out! they could be an older writer getting back into writing after years of being unable to! they could be someone going through a rough patch whose only source of joy right now is writing their silly little stories! talking about how much you dislike a fanfic literally does nothing except hurt the person writing it. that's it. it is not productive, it is not necessary. even strangers on the internet deserve basic human empathy.

babe, i feel u! i'm a hater too. rant about it privately. shit on it in private messages or group chats with friends. u can dislike something without dragging its creator into the town square to throw tomatoes at them, yknow?

talk about those fics then!! post about how much u love them!! uplift those writers!! ur tweet or tiktok or tumblr post is not going to suddenly make a popular fic lose all popularity, no matter how undeserving u perceive it to be. if this is actually coming from a place of frustration because you feel like there are other fics that deserve more attention, then just give those fics attention.

mmm ok. let's sit with this one for a second. i want you to ask yourself--is it really, really problematic? is it perpetuating harm against a marginalized group? remember, this is fanfic; it is outside the consumer economy, and the stories it tells will almost never make it to a mainstream audience. so is the story actually hurting people, or is the author just exploring something that you're uncomfortable with? because if you're just uncomfortable, then assuming the work is tagged properly, the best course of action is to just click away. as uncomfortable as it may be, people are allowed to write stories that you might find upsetting or gross or weird, and those stories existing is not inherently harmful in and of itself.

it is actively reinforcing harmful stereotypes/rhetoric/etc

okay! ok. if you are deeply concerned because you feel that this fic is genuinely harmful, then go to the writer. leave a comment. send them a message on tumblr or twitter or tiktok or wherever. explain your situation and see what they say! nine times out of ten, i'd bet that an ao3 writer means no harm and would be willing to listen and address your concerns. in fact, they might even be grateful to you for being kind enough to make them aware of a problem and educate them on it. every ao3 writer i've ever spoken to is an incredibly kind and thoughtful person; you don't need to immediately go on the attack

the writer is unreachable/nonresponsive/not willing to address or change the problematic thing

alright. if you truly feel that this fanfiction is actively harmful and can't reach any kind of conclusion with the writer, and you want to warn others who might read the fic, then do that. do that. make a post that says hey guys btw, x thing in this fic is not a good representation/perpetuates a harmful stereotype/whatever the problem is. and leave it at that! you don't need to go further and insult the writing or the person who wrote it. that is helpful to exactly no one, and if your goal is actually to make the world a better place, then you should learn how to draw attention to an issue in a way that encourages actual dialogue instead of dog-piling and personal attacks.

anyway the next time you feel the desire to post about how bad you think a fic is, feel free to use this as a guide before u do! xoxo

#mp answers #i've been trying so hard not to be annoying to my bnha friends but if you will allow me to push this for this ask let me say 🙏 #if you're afraid of the episode count for one piece the manga is a lot quicker read while being just as enjoyable because the art style is #an actual delight. its great its fantastic im absolutely in love with it #the series is soooo good and i know luffy can seem unappealing to people before they start but he's just SUCH a great character & continues #to be even now. the story is SO GOOD the characters are SO GOOD... theres so much lore and world building that its insane #if you read the manga we get 'cover stories' on what's going on with previous characters to see what theyre up to even though we moved on #from where we left them. a lot of these cover stories blend into the main story so well its just seamless #there's one where we get introduced to a character we dont see hundreds of episodes into the anime and they show up like; during the second #saga. the series is about traveling to other islands and every single arc has been tied to another in some way or form that shows up later #even if its sagas and sagas later- it still becomes relevant again!! it's a huge ongoing story and there isnt a single arc that feels like #it has no purpose (sans filler in the anime-but even then!! some filler arcs are really entertaining!) #it's emotional! its sad! its downright stupid and silly but GOD... you can feel the love that oda put into this series and his characters #and the emotions in the expressions and the messages the story gives off it just makes me UEUHGHHAHGHH!!! #it's all about the adventure and the romance of it all! its about the freedom it brings and bringing freedom to others! #its a series where treasure should be a focus given its pirates and the its a giant treasure hunt for the one piece and yet! and yet so man #of the characters treasures are things that are not coins and gems but people and promises and family and and #im going to EXPLODE i love one piece

i don't know if this is an unpopular opinion or anything, but does anyone agree with me on this: i like enj and grantaire to be horribly awkward around each other more often than they're arguing and getting into fights. maybe it's cus i've read so many enjoltaire fics at this point but like, to no fault of the authors, if it starts out with arguing that feels like something i've seen before (not because they're being copycats or whatever, just because it's understandably a very common enjoltaire trope, and just because i've read so many enjoltaire fics), i'll usually click out just cus, again, i've read so many enjoltaire fics. gotta just use my own version of them for examples lol, hmm what are good examples for this hmm. so basically i don't mean awkward as in awkwardness from liking someone and trying to hide it, even though there's that too and that's great, but more like awkwardness cus they clash and get under each other's skin and they can't ignore each other. the kind of awkwardness where you misunderstand someone and they misunderstand you so it's just awkward and annoying, i guess. and obviously this is only one part of their dynamic of course. basically, it's the causes of how you'd see them arguing all the time, but just to me it feels more natural that more often the effect of that would be them just bringing out the weirdest things about each other, if that makes sense. also banter and bickering and stuff like that of course. basically, i just get bored of actual serious arguing all the time (or really just much at all, i dunno if they argue i want it to be about silly things lol), and plus it makes me like them less as characters lol and not think they're as cute together. oh man gotta think of examples cus i feel like this doesn't make very much sense. yknow what oh well who cares lol. but yeah let grantaire and enjolras just be really weird and awkward around each other, it's very funny

I finished the first volume out of the two Ace light novels and I wanna share my favorite moments with y’all !! >:)

I’ll divide this in multiple categories because there’s a lot of moments and a lot can be put together.

Also the first light novel is in the point of view of Deuce, the first member of the Spade crew (so Ace’s crew) !!

Everything I’ll say here is from Deuce’s pov, NOT ACE !!!

Ace’s effect on others, his charisma and his similarities with Roger (and Luffy)

One thing that I love about light novels is that you can see the real impact characters have on the thoughts of others, and this light novel is full of that. Also many moments made me think « he’s really Roger’s son »/« he’s really Luffy’s brother » so I put them all here.

« Observing his athletic body, I tell myself that he was made for adventure stories and the sound of waves. »

« This man exuded a truly unique atmosphere, never seen elsewhere. »

« But then, the real ace, what kind of person is he ?

He was able, despite being hungry, to share with an equally hungry stranger what little food he had.

The son of Roger that I had in front of me, this Ace in the veins of which flowed the blood of the pirates, was this kind of man.»

« Still firmly clinging to the hull, I looked up at Ace. He laughed. Proud, his chest bulging and his eyes fixed on the horizon, he had a candid smile hanging on his face.

Then he told me about the decision he had just made. 

- You'll see ! The king of the pirates, I’ll surpass him ! »

« There was something attractive, bewitching about him. A little something that the words "charisma" or "virility" are not enough to express in their complexity. »

« Ace doesn't judge people on their looks, no, that's not his style. He is one of those who look at what his interlocutor hides deep in his heart. That too, probably, without realizing it. »

« - Raah, seriously ? We’re going to be held here for three days ?

Ace looked sulky saying that.

To see him, like that, making this funny face with a map under his eyes, he who however was not in the habit of reading maps, I could not help but find this spectacle both strange and little suitable. Nevertheless the terms "to be held" which he had used instead of "stay", for example, sounded a lot like him. »

« To find Ace, you must first look where there are crowds. »

« - Ah, I'm sated… I ate well, then I ran. Ah, but since I ran, now I'm hungry. »

Ace and Luffy

The way Ace talks about Luffy always bring tears to my eyes, it’s so obvious that he loves him more than anything in the entire world.

« - Me, my only family is a little brother. We are not of the same blood, but…

Saying these words, Ace looked far to the horizon.

- He’s so loud, he’s like a real monkey. When we were together, I wasn't really aware of it, but it's the fact of being separated, of finding myself alone, that makes me think of him... he then said, a smirk at the corner of his mouth. »

« Ace was a naturally jovial person, but when he talked about his little brother, he seemed particularly happy. »

Ace’s struggles

I strongly believe that at least until he joined the Whitebeard crew he was unstable emotionally, he didn’t know where he belonged and who he was because of his father. And these just makes it more obvious.

« In his eyes lost in the bottom of his glass, I saw the color of the seabed float. The color of rejection, cold and stagnant at the same time… However, Ace was not drunk. »

« - Renounce piracy to join the Navy… No, I don't think the question is even worth asking.

When Ace turned around, I could see that his eyes were filled with that deep sea color that we know so well. But our captain immediately found his smiling face again. »

« Ace had always tended to believe that he had no right to be loved. So when reality reminded him, in this form or another, his face and the apple of his eye were crossed by a dark shadow. »

Ace flirting

You just know I needed to put this category. It’s always with the same character, Iska, a really beautiful Navy that is determined to capture Ace and later on to make him a member of the Navy directly. You can’t convince me that he wasn’t flirting, even if it’s not consciously.

« -Fire fists, don't shirk ! Any resistance is useless, you are wasting your time. Surrender !

- And if I resist in a useful way, will that do the trick ? »

« - Fire fists, what a fool you are… Where are we going if the bounty hunter and his target start acting together, huh ?

- I don't know, it's up to us, he replied with his mischievous look. »

Ace and the sun

I loved this moment so much that I want to make a whole category just for it. Ace being compared to the sun is the most relevant thing ever said about him, just see for yourself.

« Ace was a sun-like man.

Everyone was attached to him and respected him, even his opponents. No matter what, he was the center of everything and everyone.

But the sun, because it is too blinding, is doomed to spend it’s life alone. He cannot hold close to anyone, and no one can hold close to him. Quite simply because by standing too close to him, one burns. »

I know this post is hella long and I understand if you didn’t read everything but it’s important to me to give everyone the opportunity to know and understand better a complex and amazingly written character.
