In late August I had the pleasure of watching what I believe was this lovely butterfly flittering & fluttering around my yard. She’s was a gift, gracing my yard every day. I know that butterflies have too few days to live but they take each day as an adventure, pure discovery . . . The sheer joy of simply fluttering & seeking out nectar from gardens & more flittering in their journeys. I didn’t see her for several days. I was on the last leg of one of my morning walks when I glanced down at my feet & there she was. Just as you see her here. Can I just say that I was a little heartbroken over this creature? I gently picked her up & brought her home. I set her near a bird nest in my studio & paid her homage every day for weeks. Look at her tattered wings. The scratches, the missing parts, the tatters & tears. She was worn out. Hers was not an easy life. Perhaps she escaped birds several times a day hiding in briary, out-of-the-way places where birds could not get her but where the thorns did. Perhaps she tangled with other insects or fluttered those wings so hard they split.
