Love Comes Quietly Ch 1

Future Alex Blake x reader warnings: language, minor talk of fbi type situations, alcohol consumption.
Alex always felt like it was a breath of incredibly fresh air whenever she got to get out of DC for something that wasn’t FBI case related. Since the divorce she’d almost started to feel a little antsy, like there was something else she should or could be doing to take up her free time now that the house was empty. She and James were still in touch rather frequently, everything had been completely amicable after all, just two people realizing they were going down different paths in life, even if they still cared about each other, they knew their part of the journey together was over. He’d stayed in the house with her while they sorted everything out and got papers signed and figured out who things belonged to and who wanted what before he moved off to Boston to accept the teaching position at Harvard.
Which is exactly how she had found herself on the Harvard campus for a week and a half guest lecturing in a handful of different classes. Despite James being the one to make the original invitation it was Daniela who’d convinced her into staying for the full week. They’d worked together at Georgetown when Alex had first started teaching and were hoping to finally be able to play catch up in between work hours.
Alex had done one lecture already today, using the free time before lunch to poke around the campus a little bit. There were more than enough interesting places, including a handful of bookstores that were home to a lot more than text books and required readings. She wandered the aisles, skipping the non fiction, she had enough of those kicking around the house already. She slowed a bit through the fiction books, though her face grimaced at the mystery and crime novels, there was no need for those, she saw enough of that in her every day life. The last thing she needed was to come home from a case and have that be her bedtime reading. She slowed when she hit the romance section, it was cheesy, she was the first to admit it, but sometimes they just hit the spot, a pleasant over dramatic sappy distraction from real life. Her secret guilty pleasure, if you will.
Her fingers trailed along a couple of books, nose scrunching when nearly all the covers featured a broad chested half naked man. Something, rather a person, caught her eye a bit further down the aisle. It was as if the two of you were both trying to outwait the other before going for the books you actually were interested in. She surveyed you out of the corner of her eye, you were old enough she knew the chances of you being a student were unlikely, especially considering you didn’t have any kind of bag with you. Key ring dangling from your fingers, bulge of your phone in the back pocket of your jeans. You were dressed just on the brink of business casual, but not nice enough that she thought you were a professor.
She watched as your lips moved into a tiny grin, as if a fond memory was waving through your brain and you reached out to the shelf, picking out a book that she recognized the cover of, ‘Love Letters. 2000 Years of Romance’. You flicked through a couple of pages, eyes scanning the text with a little smile on your face before you flipped the entire books worth of pages and she just knew you were inhaling that new book smell. You turned the book over, reading the dedication on the back before slipping it back into its place on the shelf.
“Oh now that’s a good one, it’s not a put it back book.” The words left her lips before she even really realized she was saying them. You practically jumped, despite being more than well aware there was someone else in the aisle with you, looking up to her as you laughed softly.
“Oh! I know, I’ve read it, one of my faves. My copy’s just getting a little worse for wear.”
“A little wear and tear means a book’s well loved.” She smiled softly, “my copy usually lives on the bedside table.”
“Perfect bedtime reading.” You smiled and for a moment you thought she was going to turn back to the shelves but she looked you over briefly.
“You’re… not a student here are you?”
“What gave it away.” You laughed, “and no, just..” you checked your watch, “waiting for a friend to finish a lecture. Need an expert opinion on something.”
“Anything I could help with?” She asked and it was your turn to survey her, the blazer, shoulder bag no doubt with at least a laptop and lecture notes in it, the smudge of white board marker on her right hand.
“Dunno, what’d’you teach?”
“Well, technically just guest lecturing this week, but linguistics.”
“Ah…” Before you could comment that you were waiting on a friend who taught forensic science a man popped into the end of the aisle, a small grin on his face as he wandered down to her side.
“Now why am I not surprised to find you in the romance novel section?” He greeted with a tease and her cheeks tinged pink as she turned to him, “ready?”
“Yes.” She nodded in your direction and you gave her a little salute once his back was turned before you turned back to the shelf of books in front of you with a soft sigh, checking your watch once more. You didn’t have long before you had to be back at the office, you were hoping Daniela would hurry the hell up. Letting out a little groan you rolled your eyes, maybe if you met her at her classroom this wouldn’t take as long.
**
Considering it was Friday, Alex shouldn’t have been surprised when she was roped into after work drinks and snacks with Daniela and a few other friends. She was at least thankful that they’d ended up off campus, not wanting to be plagued with students or follow up questions from lectures during the week. City Bar Back Bay was the perfect place for them, a trendy lounge tucked away in the corner of a hotel on Exeter Street. There were cocktails, a few glasses of wine, a jug of sangria and plates of chips, cheese, soft pretzel bites and more spread across the table for everyone to share. Everyone’s spirits were lifted at the knowledge it was the end of the week, laughter and conversation flowing easily throughout the small group.
“So?” Daniela questioned, nudging at Alex’s arm, “how’re you liking Boston?”
“You ask that like I haven’t been here before.” She replied with a laugh.
“But now you’re teaching here… and at Harvard, nonetheless. That’s gotta be at least some kind of bonus points.”
“Daniela…” Alex eyed her with a chuckle, “I didn’t move here when my husband suggested it, I’m not going to uproot my life just because you hate having to do certain parts of your lesson plans.”
“Yeah.” Caitlin cut in from her other side, “I keep telling you to just hire a TA.”
“Maybe I just prefer having a friend come to town a couple of times a year.”
“You’re lazy.” Caitlin replied, stealing a chip off her plate, “where’s Murphy? She mention bailing or anything at lunch?”
“No, she said she’d definitely be here. She’s probably caught up at work.” Daniela turned back to Alex with a near whine, “c’mon… what about splitting the year? Half in DC, half here?” Alex laughed, affectionately rolling her eyes.
“Two weeks at a time is my absolute max. I love my job, and as much as I enjoy teaching, it doesn’t jump higher, I’ve spent way too long working to get where I am.”
“Yeah, yeah.” Daniela waved her off with a playful groan, she was about to say something else when a voice rung in from behind her.
“I am so sorry I’m late!” You swept in quickly, hand on her shoulder as you leant around her from behind to kiss her cheek before dropping into the open chair at the head of the small table.
“Yeah, where the hell have you been?” Daniela asked.
“Ugh.” You rolled your eyes, “turns out when you kill someone there’s an extra forty five minutes of paperwork.”
“Should I be concerned?” Alex’s ears had picked up the words, turning back your direction with a tease in her voice and a laugh on her cheeks, pulling a loud laugh from Daniela.
“No, Murphy’s FBI.” She explained.
Alex’s eyes met yours from across the table and a tiny grin split your lips as both of your heads tilted in recognition from the bookstore that afternoon. You’d changed half your outfit from then, no doubt wanting to get out of work clothes, button up swapped for a cotton tank while the blazer was replaced with a plaid flannel, your hair pulled back into a sleek ponytail, soft curls swaying as you turned your head to glance back to Daniela.
“Y/N, meet Alex Blake.” She gestured between the two of you and you extended out a hand that Alex was quick to shake.
“Oh!” Your eyes widened, “Professor Blake. I’ve heard wonderful things.”
“All lies I’m sure.” Alex chuckled with a smirk.
“There’s an Agent in there somewhere too.” Daniela teased, pouring out a glass of sangria to slide over to you.
“Don’t forget Doctor.” Caitlin cut in, snagging another treat from Daniela’s plate.
“Three titles,” you mused, “now that’s impressive.”
“Gives me a nice rotation depending on who I’m talking to.” Alex joked with a shrug and you chuckled.
“So linguist in one column.” You ticked it off on your finger, “gonna take a stab in the dark and say PhD in the next.” She nodded, “but what department for the last?”
“Behaviour Analysis Unit.”
“No fucking way.” Your arm dropped to the table, a little harder than you’d intended.
“What?” Alex asked with a small laugh, taking a sip of her drink.
“I just put in papers for an application to fill the open spot on that team.” You laughed, “I’ve got an interview with an Agent… Prentiss? Next week.”
“Oh thank god.” She let out a huff of a sigh, “we’ve been too shorthanded for too long. I was barely able to get away for this week.”
“Okay, I’m grabbing another pitcher.” Daniela grabbed the empty jug of sangria from the table top, hopping off her chair and Alex was able to slide into it to continue the conversation with you.
“So you’d say there’s a decent chance then?” You raised a brow over the rim of your glass.
“As long as Prentiss thinks so.”
“Is she a hard ass?”
“No.” Alex laughed, chewing on her lip for a moment, “she’s…. driven, loyal, passionate, has high expectations but also incredibly understanding. If you look good on paper things will probably look good, but honestly to her it probably matters more what you manage in person.”
“How so?” Your head tilted, “obviously it takes a particular type of person to be a profiler, but you’re hinting at more than that.”
“Nicely done.” She nearly smirked in your direction, “our team is a family. I know most places when you hear that term it’s a red flag you should run for the hills, but that’s not true here. We spend more time together than with anyone else, our secrets and pasts come out when we’re getting into the minds of unsubs or trying to talk them down. There are things my team knows that some of my closest friends of family have never been told, and that makes us stronger, makes us work together even better.”
“Hmm.” You nodded, sucking back more of your drink, “good to know.”
“You said your interview’s next week?” She asked and you nodded again, “I get back on Tuesday, I’ll be sure to bring your name up to Emily.”
“That’d be amazing!” You beamed, eyes widening with excitement and Alex smiled softly back at you.
She wasn’t quite sure what it was, but even from the very brief moment in the bookstore earlier she already knew that she liked you. Something was simply drawing her to you, like the universe wanted you to know each other, that you were meant to cross paths. After all, you’d already done so twice in one day without even knowing the other existed when you woke up that morning. Now that you were actually getting to spend some time together the two of you clicked instantly, falling into conversation like you were old friends who hadn’t seen each other in years. There was no awkwardness or weird small talk, just laughter and little jabs as if you knew exactly how to tease the other person without offending them. She knew deep within her that she had met someone that day that would be an integral part of her life, no matter how the interview ended up going.
Alex was about to elaborate to you when Daniela came back to the table with a tray in her hand and a wicked grin on her cheeks.
“It is time for shots!” She shrieked and Alex rolled her eyes.
“You can’t be serious.”
“Alex, c’mon.”
“Yeah!” Caitlin joined in, passing shots from the tray to the table, “I mean we do have a reason to celebrate after all!”
“Exactly!” Daniela high fived her, winking in her direction before raising a shot glass in Alex’s direction, “we didn’t get to celebrate your divorce when it happened, so now is as good a time as any.”
“Daniela!” Alex half scolded half laughed and the other woman simply shook her head, pointing to the shot until Alex huffed, picking up the glass and you followed suit. Glasses clinked together before liquor was sunk back, little winces echoing through the group.
“Okay!” Daniela shook it off, “that’s the liquid courage I needed.” Her eyes searched around the bar, “try to find myself a man.”
“On it.” Caitlin scooped up their drinks, handing Daniela hers before the two of them disappeared into the crowd.
“You know you’re more than welcome to join them.” Alex prompted, her hand squeezing at your arm on the table top and you laughed.
“That would require me being interested in men in the first place.”
“I’m sure there’s a few nice girls out there too.”
“Meh.” You replied, sucking back at your drink, “not into it. Besides, they invite you out and then bail? Rude. I mean…” you glanced across at her, “unless you’d rather bail too, hit up the guy from your lunch date?”
Alex couldn’t help but bark out a laugh at that, her smile reaching her eyes as she looked back to you.
“That was my ex husband.” She laughed, “we’re still good friends, just, no longer in love.”
“I’m sorry.” You frowned slightly.
“Don’t be.” She shrugged with a smile, “it wasn’t anything hurtful or sad. We got married young, we’re both incredibly passionate about our careers and we spent a lot more time working than together. Things simply… fizzled out.”
“I’m glad you’re still friends.”
“Me too.” She smiled warmly back at you and the two of you slipped into an easy conversation.
Two rounds of drinks later and Caitlin had disappeared from the bar with her conquest while you and Alex were still trapped in an endless conversation that neither of you wanted to halt. Even when Daniela would swing by every so often to check in she could tell that the two of you were clearly fast friends and there was no worry about her leaving the two of you alone any longer. So she took full advantage after another tequila shot to bite the bullet and see if the man she’d been flirting with wanted to go someplace else.
Your cheeks hurt from smiling so much, having not connected with someone like this in what felt like years and Alex would tell you she felt the same. She had just finished a story when your phone buzzed on the table top and your face fell when you glanced toward it.
“Got a case?” She asked, knowing the feeling all to well.
“Not now.” You sighed, sucking back the rest of your drink, “but my weekend is officially no longer a weekend. Gotta report to the office at nine tomorrow.”
“Ugh.” She grimaced.
“Yeah.” You huffed, sliding off the stool, thankful at least that Daniela had taken care of the tab already. “It was really nice to meet you Alex.”
“Right back at you.” She smiled softly.
“Night.” You smiled, giving her a little salute.
“Hey!” Her hand wrapped around your wrist when you were a mere foot away, tugging you back and you raised a brow in her direction, “can’t just leave without my info.”
“Oh?”
“I want to know how that interview goes.” She dug into her pocket, pulling out a business card to hand off to you, “I was serious about thinking you’d make a good fit to the team. I’ll send a text to Emily in the morning, put in a good word.”
“Thank you. Really.” With a smile, you pocketed the card, “I’ll let you know as soon as I hear anything.”
“I’m sure it’ll be good news.” She assured with a grin, watching the joy spread through you as you finally did turn from the table, waving goodnight to her once more before you vanished through the bar door.

Love Comes Quietly Ch 2
Tumblr media
Eventual Alex Blake x reader warnings: mentions of usual CM case work/violence, mentions of alcohol.
Alex’s phone buzzed the next afternoon, a smile gracing her cheeks when she picked it up to see the message from an unsaved number, realizing it was you.
‘Woke up to an email from Prentiss, your word travels fast.’
‘Only for the best. Good luck. Let me know if you need to pick my brain for anything, I’m always open for help.’
‘You’re a gem. Have a safe flight home.’
You signed it off with a smiley face that made Alex smile, tucking her phone back into her pocket and continue on about her day. She had an open weekend to explore Boston and she wasn’t going to let that go to waste.
*
Alex was back in DC before she knew it, settling right back in at the BAU and unsurprisingly, she didn’t even have time to unpack before it was wheel’s up and they were off on a case. It was back up the coast she went, though this time the jet landing in New York City. There was brief chatter on the ride up about the rumours of the team getting a new agent, knowing that Emily was in the midst of doing interviews, and the chatter exploded when Alex mentioned she had met one of them already. It was one question after the other rapid fire style as she explained with a laugh that she’d only just met you and got as much of a read as she could over a few hours but honestly didn’t know that much. She did mention that she did really like you and thought you’d fit in well with the rest of the team though.
“Is she also a Professor?” Spencer asked, leaning forward in his seat, his attention fully on Blake.
“Better question is what was she drinking? Could she handle a whiskey night?” Rossi asked with a grin.
“Y’all are missing the main point.” Derek smirked, “she single? You have a picture?”
That earned him a swat on the head with the case file in Emily’s hand as she wandered back from the front of the jet.
“Would you hold off on the interrogation until I’ve actually hired someone?” She asked with a groan, “and believe me, I’m pretty sure she’s not interested in you, even if she is single.”
“How would you know that?” Derek asked with a scoff as she took a seat across the aisle.
“Who do you think is on the one doing the interviews?”
“Do you really have to ask those kind of questions in an interview? I mean, is that appropriate?” Reid asked, his brow furrowing and Emily let out a sigh.
“Personal relationships are something that they don’t have to comment on and I’m not really supposed to ask so its part of the pre or post small talk, but I prefer to know if someone’s married, if they have kids. It doesn’t sway my opinion on hiring at all, it’s just nice to know. Especially for someone like Murphy who’d be moving to a completely new state.”
“The question remains…. Is she single?” Derek raised a brow and Alex chuckled.
“You’re gonna have to give it up Morgan, she’s not into men.”
“I knew it!” Emily gasped, “oh I just knew it!”
“You really picked that up from just a phone call?” Derek asked with a laugh and Emily shot him a look.
“It’s like a sixth sense. We just know.” She turned back to Alex, “it drove me a little crazy all week, I was debating asking you if you knew but I didn’t wanna overstep.”
“Oh I knew.” Alex chuckled, “she seems to be pretty open about it, I don’t think she minds it being public knowledge.” Emily surveyed her for a moment, her head tilting as she examined the other woman.
“Did you two…?”
“Emily!” Alex laughed, a scoff taking over her face, “I was staying with James! I’m not that rude of a house guest. And no. When I say we clicked instantly I mean platonically, like we were best friends in a past life.”
“Waste of an opportunity, she’s a babe.”
“Oh come on!” Derek finally chimed in, leaving the other two women laughing.
“Calm down Morgan.” Emily teased, “I haven’t even hired her yet.” She turned back to Alex, “you know, it’s a shame he knows already. Would’ve been fun to see how long he would’ve kept hitting on her until she finally said something.”
“Oh that would’ve been too fun.” Alex smirked across at him, “she probably would’ve gotten a couple free dinners out of it.”
“You guys are just plain mean.” Derek shot back, picking up his head phones in an attempt to ignore them the rest of the flight.
Alex and Emily simply chuckled in return, picking up the case files in front of them.
*
They spent three days in New York chasing leads around Manhattan until they finally managed to catch the unsub in the far too early hours of Saturday morning. Emily insisted paperwork could wait until actual office hours, sending the team back to the hotel in the meantime. She was also insistent on them taking one more night in the city, both to help wind down and because the jet needed to refuel before it would be flown out to pick them up.
Insomnia and adrenaline got the best of Alex, tossing and turning for a few hours in the hard hotel bed before she gave up, flicking the television on to distract herself. She was at the precinct bright and early, second only to Emily, who by the looks of things also hadn’t actually slept. It was silently that the other woman poured out a fresh mug of coffee and slid it across the table as Alex pulled up a chair. She quickly worked through the required paperwork, letting out a sigh when she realized her mug was empty. She made the trip to the break room to refill it, but once back at the table she took a sip and let out a groan, glancing up at Emily.
“I cannot drink this shit anymore. There’s a shop around the corner, you mind if I take a quick break?”
“Blake, you’ve been here hours longer than anyone else, just take the half day.”
“You sure?”
“Yeah.” Emily laughed in return, “only reason I’m still here is cause I’m waiting on everyone else’s paperwork.”
“Oh thank god.” Alex replied, “thank you.”
Gathering her things she was quick to leave the precinct, wandering down the street debating if she was going to hit up the coffee shop originally planned or explore something else now that she had the rest of the afternoon. In a last second decision she crossed the street to the café, figuring maybe a coffee boost was all she needed, pulling open the door as the bell rang over her head. It was relatively empty inside, a couple of people sitting at tables with laptops or text books out, an elderly couple waiting for their drinks at the pick up station and a woman not much younger than herself up at the counter. It was only when the woman turned around that her eyes grazed up the legging and hoodie clad body to realize it was you.
“Alex?” Your brow furrowed for a moment.
“Y/N?” A smile broke out on her cheeks as the two of you quickly stepped together for a hug without even thinking about it, “what’re you doing here?”
“In town with some friends.” You shrugged, tucking a bottle of water under your arm, “I take it you’re here about that string of acid attacks?”
“You would be correct.”
“How’s that going?”
“Caught the guy last night.” She replied with a tired smile, “well, this morning rather.”
“Explains the midday pick me up then.”
You teased and she laughed, watching the way you spun around at the sound of your name being called from the pick up station and you moved out of the way so she could order. It was clear you hadn’t been planning on running into anyone, aside from the lazy, comfy clothes (that she wished she could be wearing in that moment) your hair was tugged up into a messy bun, it looked like you still had last night’s mascara on and there were sunglasses on the top of your head despite it being the middle of October. She ordered a large flat white and opted to add on a house made French toast bagel, considering she was in New York after all. She couldn’t help but chuckle when she joined you at the pick up station, the water bottle still tucked under your arm, coffee in one hand that you were currently drinking out of, and some kind of juice or refresher in the other.
“Got enough to drink there?” She teased and you practically scowled.
“Hydration.” You gestured to the water under your arm, “caffeination, flavoured hydration.” A pause while the barista called your name again, placing a bagel wrapped up on the counter for you to pick up after you transferred both drinks into one hand, “sustenance.”
“Late night, I take it?” She smirked, watching you miraculously open the bagel with one hand before taking a bite.
“Don’t wanna talk about it.”
“Grab a table before you drop something. I’ll stay and eat with you.” She chuckled. Though before you got the chance the bell above the door chimed once again and she turned toward the noise, her eyes widening at the sight of Emily entering the café. “Oh please don’t tell me something already came up?”
“No.” The other woman replied with a slight huff, “you put the idea of a good coffee in my brain and I couldn’t get rid of it.” She replied, walking up to the two of you, “who’s your friend?”
“Agent Prentiss?” You asked, your brow furrowing slightly, recognizing her voice from the phone interview previously.
“Oh shit!” She gasped in realization, “you must be y/n!” She stuck her hand out and Alex was impressed once again as you managed to shuffle everything around in order to shake it without dropping anything. “I thought you were Boston based. Sorry,” she suddenly winced with a small laugh, “that wasn’t exactly professional.”
“I am.” You replied with a soft laugh, “and it’s fine. Not exactly here for work, obviously.” You gestured down to your outfit the best you could with no hands.
“Hey…” Emily started, “if you’re here.. and I’m here why don’t we just do the in person interview today? Save you a flight out to DC?”
“Uh… Agent Prentiss… to be blunt? I am violently hungover right now.” You admitted and Alex barked out a laugh, “like, we’re talking I rolled out of bed fifteen minutes ago. Haven’t even showered, still covered in glitter under this hoodie.”
“Girls trip?” Emily asked.
“Bachelorette party weekend.”
“Ah.”
“And considering it was male strippers last night? My choices were to either bleach my eyes or get drunk enough to hope I’d be able to forget it.” Both of them grimaced at that, Emily pulling a face of absolute disgust.
“I’m not the hungover one and I’m pretty sure I just threw up in my mouth.”
“Yeah.” You laughed, “so I’m not sure if my brain is exactly prime interview ready right now.”
“I mean, the in persons are probably the easiest.” She offered, “I usually just have people run through a case and build the profile on their own and see what their findings are compared to ours.”
“I might be able to handle that.”
“How about…” she dug into her back pocket for a minute, pulling out a business card, “I let you get some caffeine into your system, maybe a shower so you feel more like a human and then you can call me? We’re here ‘til two tomorrow. Not that I want to intrude on your vacation!”
“Please.” You laughed, “if it gets me away from having to see any more penis confetti or straws, I’ll gladly take it. And the girls can’t complain if I can actually say it’s work.” You managed to take the card from her, slipping into the pocket of the hoodie.
“I’m honestly amazed you haven’t dropped anything yet.” Alex commented, pulling laughs from both you and Emily.
“She’s one of us that doesn’t need a bag.” Emily cut in with a grin, “pockets are all you need.”
“Exactly.” You laughed, “purses are the worst! I have two perfectly good hands! Okay, I’m gonna go hydrate and caffeinate, I’ll call you in a bit?”
“Are you close by?”
“Yup, Hilton just around the corner.”
“You have your creds on you?”
“Yeah.”
“Just come by the precinct whenever you’re ready. I’ll be there til five.”
“Okay.” You nodded, glancing back to Alex, “guess I’m not eating in. We could grab dinner? There’s an amazing Mexican place a couple blocks away.”
“That sounds great.” She smiled.
“You’re more than welcome to come too.” You offered to Emily, “but if the interview goes terribly you’re footing the bill.” Emily laughed,
“I like you already. We’ll see how long it takes my team to finish up.”
“Kay.” You smiled, doing your best to give a little wave, “I’ll see you later.” With a wave from the other two women the bell above the door chimed and you vanished from the café. Emily turned back to Alex with a smirk on her lips.
“Blake, I swear to god if you don’t hit that…”
“Are you gonna order your coffee!?”
“Oh… right.” Emily turned away with a chuckle, placing her order before joining Alex at one of the smaller tables, placing down a cup of coffee and a container of yogurt. “You know I’m not trying to actually pressure you into anything, right?”
“I know.” She replied with a chuckle, “you just find extreme entertainment by torturing others.”
“I’d say torture is pushing the bill a bit. You’re single now, you should be out having fun. I’ve gotta live vicariously through someone and it sure as hell isn’t gonna be Morgan.”
“If I remember correctly, you’re single?” Alex commented with a cocked brow.
“Married to the job.” She replied, eating a spoonful of yogurt.
“So why aren’t you asking her out then?”
“If I hire her, I’m her boss. If I don’t, a; I look like an asshole and b; we’re living in different states. Besides, as cute as she is, she’s not my go to type. And you got to her first.”
“Emily…” Alex warned, letting out an exasperated sigh. The other woman’s eyes narrowed, examining her for a moment and she rolled her eyes, sometimes she hated the fact that she worked with and thus was friends with, so many profilers.
“Are you nervous because you’ve never fully been with a woman before?”
“I have enough experience with women, both pre and post marriage.”
“Good.” Emily murmured over the rim of her coffee, “because I don’t want to have to coach you through that.” Her eyes gleamed with the tease as she grinned across the table and Alex tossed a balled up napkin in her direction as they both laughed.
“Would never have crossed my mind to even ask.”
“I could give you some excellent toy recommendations though.”
“Prentiss I’m not having this conversation in public or without alcohol.”
Emily’s laugh was interrupted by her phone going off on the table top and she frowned as she picked it up, eyes scrolling through the text.
“New case?”
“No, it’s Reid. Victims parents want to talk me specifically.” With a soft sigh she pushed up from the table, tossing the empty yogurt into the trash and picking up her coffee, “I’ll see you later.”
*
As it turned out, your interview went far better than you could have expected considering the brain fog you were still battling off. Though you knew Emily had to be cutting you some amount of slack, the entire thing was far more casual than what you were prepared for. You were sure some of that was due to it being the end of her current case and nearing the end of the day, the precinct bare but those required to work the weekend shifts.
Emily found herself drawn to you practically immediately, even more so than over the phone and she understood what Alex had been talking about. Something had clicked that day, whether it was in the coffee shop or later on, she knew that she liked you and that you’d make an absolutely perfect addition to her team. Even with the hangover you managed to put together a perfect profile in a short amount of time, and never once grimaced at any crime scene photos or unsubs histories. By the time five o clock hit she knew she was hiring you, though she didn’t say anything, it technically still had to go through the brass. She unfortunately ended up getting roped into consulting on a local pd case and said goodnight to you before you left the precinct to text Alex about dinner.
Alex was more than happy to see you in high spirits after your afternoon, excited that things had gone so well. She also knew in that moment that she could forever trust your food recommendations, the place you’d chosen for dinner was beyond incredible and she’d wished it was in DC instead of New York. If she was ever back in the city, there was no doubt she’d be returning. There were a few moments she couldn’t help but tease, suggesting a tequila flight that you instantly gagged at, glaring at her from across the table, a margarita was the perfect hair of the dog, nothing more.
Similar to the evening in Boston she couldn’t help but feel like she was on a cloud around you, that you’d known each other for a decade already and if she had asked you would’ve said that you felt the same. There was absolutely no way that the universe hadn’t intended for the two of you to meet, to be friends. Three meetings by absolute fluke already, there was no doubt in Alex’s mind that you would be showing up on the steps of the BAU within a couple of weeks. You were destined to be in her life.

Imagine the team thinking Spencer is so sweet and innocent, a total virgin and any sexual encounter he would’ve had must have been so vanilla.
Sweet innocent Spencer Reid, who rails you into oblivion every single night, who makes you forget your own name and scream his so loud the entire neighbourhood knows who’s making you feels so fucking good.

Appreciation for the BAU women
Unpopular opinion: most of the BAU women haven’t actually done anything to warrant the amount of hate that they get. People just hate them because internalised misogyny hates when women are opinionated and human

Love Comes Quietly Ch 3
Tumblr media
Future Alex Blake x reader warnings: language, some alcohol, thats about it. Eta: don’t come for me if the statements about DC aren’t accurate, i did my best to research, i’m just relaying what google said lol
Returning to DC was exactly like slipping back into the same old routine. Alex immediately tossed laundry in, then tackled the fridge, letting out a sigh as she tossed out far too much fresh produce. After transferring the laundry over to the dryer, she headed out to get groceries, it looked like they’d actually get to stick around homebase for a while so she would at least have time to prep stuff to toss in the freezer. She enjoyed her little reset nights as she called them, leaving a window open while she cooked to let the fresh air in, piling away Tupperware containers into the fridge and freezer before putting fresh sheets on the bed. By the time she was settling into the couch with a glass of wine and a book she felt accomplished, leaving her in a positive mindset for returning to the office the next morning.
Everyone was more than a little thankful for the fact that it was a paperwork day, finally having the chance to catch up on things that had started piling up. Emily ended up spending most of her day holed away in her office, sorting through resumes, reading recommendations and conducting phone interviews that she knew were basically pointless, but she had to at least look at all the contenders. She was so focussed on speeding through all of it that she didn’t catch the time, realizing she was about to be very late for a budget meeting, scooping up the appropriate files and her phone her office door finally opened. She was unsurprised to find everyone, Garcia included in the bullpen, and while it was still a professional level of quiet, it was very clearly a casual day.
“Hey Reid!” She called out as she made her way across the room and the man looked up, “I need you to clear those books out of that spare desk you’ve been using as a library by the end of the day.”
“But…where will I?” He started and she chuckled.
“There’s an empty shelf in JJ’s old office.”
“Does this mean we’re finally getting a new agent?” Garcia asked with an excited grin.
Alex had already put it together, her eyes glancing toward her phone and she couldn’t help but reach out to tap the screen, frowning when there was no notification from you. Emily caught the movement, especially when Alex looked up to her with a curious expression and she let out a small laugh.
“I just sent the email and she’s out on a case right now. Besides, I’m not even sure if she’s actually going to take the job.”
Without another word she slipped through the door, effectively leaving the team to excitedly gossip over the new team member. Emily’s wording, and direction directly to Alex had them all assuming the same thing, this mystery girl from Boston who happened to be in New York last week was going to be their newest profiler.
*
A few hours later, and a few hours up the coast; you were letting out a huff of a tired sigh, tucking into a stool at the kitchen island. Your laptop was open in front of you, phone on the island beside a notebook where you’d been scribbling out multiple ‘to-do’ lists to organize everything you had to get done and it seemed like the list was just getting longer and longer as the day went on. You’d just unwrapped your take out dinner when your phone began to buzz on the counter top. You let out a small whine, dropping your food back to the counter, praying it wasn’t work but Alex’s name flashed across your screen and a smile broke out on your lips.
“Hey.” You answered, popping the phone onto speaker mode.
“I believe congratulations are in order.” Her voice came through the phone and you could practically see her grin, letting out a small laugh.
“I guess they would be.”
“Drinks on me when you get out here?”
“Now that sounds like a plan I can get behind.” Standing from the stool you crossed the kitchen to the fridge, pulling out a bottle of wine. When you opened it the cork pop echoed through the room,
“I’m not interrupting, am I?” Alex asked and you laughed, pouring the wine into a fresh glass.
“No.” You settled back in your spot, “you just mentioned drinks and it made me realize I think I deserve a celebratory one.”
“Well cheers to you then.” Despite not being able to see it, Alex still raised her own glass before taking a sip, listening to you do the same.
“Mmmm. God, yeah, needed that.”
“Long case?”
“Nah. We wrapped this morning; my paperwork was done before lunch. Once I got Emily’s email I put in the transfer papers with the brass and took the rest of the day off.”
“Big celebration plans?” She asked with a tease and you laughed again.
“More like I have an entire apartment to clean out and pack up in god knows how short of time. I’ve already made three trips to donation and one to the dump, got as much as I can listed to sell.”
“Do you have to worry about breaking a lease?”
“No. Thankfully I own, so I can leave all that to my realtor and not have to worry.”
“That’s good!”
“Yeah.” You smiled, “hey… the weather’s not that different down there, right? Or am I gonna need a completely new wardrobe?”
“It’s relatively the same.” She laughed back, “but make sure you have at least a couple of things for extreme weather, you never know where a case will take us.”
“Right, right.” You muttered, picking up your pen to scribble down a couple of things on the notepad, “Prentiss said the usual business casual…”
“Yeah, no one’s really particular about it. As long as you look put together she’s not nitpicky about things.”
“Go bag’s like, a small duffle, what’d you use for daily?”
“Same over the shoulder I use when I teach. But if you’re a pockets and hands girl I’m sure you’ll be fine.” She teased and you laughed, playfully rolling your eyes before you paused to finally take a bite of dinner.
“Mm. Sorry.” You mumbled over the bite of food as you chewed and it was her turn to chuckle.
“So I did catch you at an awkward time.”
“It’s fine.” You waved her off, wiping at your mouth with a napkin, “like hell I was cooking today, it’s just take out.”
“What’ve you got? It’s chicken stir fry over here.”
“I stopped at Little Whale for a lobster roll, figured I should get as ‘em while I can.”
“Oh James was talking about that place, said it’s one of the best in town.”
“And it shall be missed.” You sighed before taking another bite, “okay…. Top places in Washington, romanticize me.”
Alex let out a laugh, the smile reaching her eyes as she sipped at her wine, thinking about the best places she’d been over the years living there.
“You know, I’ve become pretty fond of Founding Farmers, it’s all house made from scratch, absolutely delicious, including cocktails. But if you’re looking for something like Little Whale, a place like Plume, Monocle might be better compared.”
“Eh,” you shrugged, “I’m not really into the crazy fancy places, it’s just the freshest lobster in town.”
“Fair.” She laughed, taking another bite of her dinner.
“Best breakfast?”
“Oh Cracked Eggery, hands down.” She quickly swallowed her food, “it’s mainly sandwiches, but they’ve got these garlic parm truffle tots and they are the best fucking thing I’ve ever had.”
“Please tell me that’s on the morning commute.”
“From me? Yes.” She laughed.
“Wait…” you stalled, wine halfway to your mouth, “I think we need to backpedal a bit. You’re in Washington, yes?”
“Yes.”
“Okay.” You finally took a swig, “cause I won’t lie, I’ve only been to Quantico once and that was for my training fucking decades ago. It always confused me that everyone always says DC, but Quantico is in Virginia… like, I may be a federal agent but I somehow didn’t realize that DC wasn’t like, a full sized state.” You felt yourself cringe at the admission but Alex let out a playful laugh,
“It’s confusing, especially if you’re not from around the area or spend a lot of time here.”
“So like, should I be looking into information about DC, or should I be looking at settling in Virginia? Cause Maryland would be too far North and a bitch of a commute, right?”
“I mean, it’s all up to you when it comes down to it. Most of us are in DC, but like you said, a commute from Virginia might be easier on you. Traffic can be a bit of a bitch.”
“Okay, hold on.” You toggled on the track pad of your laptop to wake it up, “let me pull up a couple of places I’ve been looking at. How bad’s the drive from DC?”
“Nothing terrible.” She shrugged, moving from the table to scrape her plate into the garbage and put it into the dishwasher, “make sure you have an EZ pass if you plan on driving. I usually keep occupied with audio books, or just leave earlier to beat the rush. Public transportation is pretty decent, but again, crowded.”
“And inconvenient considering the hours we end up working.”
“Exactly.” She smiled softly, refilling her wine glass.
“Okay, bare with me as I sort though all this, I swear I have every possible window open on my laptop.”
“Okay.” She chuckled, picking up her glass and moving into the living room to settle onto the couch.
“Found a couple good places in Columbia Heights?”
“No.” Alex immediately shook her head, “heavy gang presence. Relatively safe during the day if you use your head but I’d be worried coming home late.”
“I knew it seemed too good to be true.” You huffed, un-favouriting the postings until you came across another one, your lips pursing. “Chevy Chase?” You raised an eyebrow before you scrolled down the page and let out a small laugh, “well, considering my salary that’s out.” You repeated the process, “okay, not as nice as the last but this one’s in Brentwood.”
“Absolutely not. Now you’re going in the wrong direction.” Alex said with a laugh and you huffed, rolling your eyes.
“You’re so much more direct than google ever would have been, bless you.”
“I told you I was more than happy to help, didn’t I?”
“Georgetown? That’s where you regularly teach, right?”
“Whenever I can.” She replied, “it’s one of the nicest areas in Washington, probably run into a lot of the younger demographic thanks to the school, it can be relatively pricey though. Their French Market on the weekends is not to miss though.”
“Noted.” You scribbled that down onto the pad of paper, clicking through the listing before double saving it with a star for later. “Okay last one I’ve got in Washington is in Petworth.”
“Ehh…” Alex grimaced, “high homeless population, which isn’t that much of an issue, but again, not very safe at night.”
“Ugh. Okay.” You let out a sigh, pausing to take the final bite of your sandwich, “I’ve got a couple of places in Alexandria to look at, I’ll check with my realtor and see if she can set me up with someone down there to get a better vantage point.” You minimized the page containing all the listings to reveal the Airbnb site and you let out another groan, “fuck, now I’m gonna have to go through all the Airbnb’s I bookmarked too…” Withholding a whine you took another sip of your drink, “why is this such a pain in the ass?”
“Better question is why are you looking at Airbnb’s? That’s gonna jack up you spending in a heartbeat, it’s not cheaper than renting!”
“Yeah but after comparing it to hotel costs in DC I think I’d rather have an actual kitchen and the mental security of knowing I’m the only person with a key if we’re away on a case, no numerous housekeeping and hotel staff in and out constantly.”
“Okay you’ve lost me now.” She admitted with a chuckle, “why hotels?”
“I’m not about to buy a place without seeing it in person first.” You laughed, “no matter how incredible a realtor is. And Emily warned that I might get less than a day in the city before we’re off on a case, it might take me a while to actually find a place I’m willing to call home.”
“While I understand that, it’s still completely ridiculous to waste your money like that.”
“It’s either that or flying back and fourth multiple times over the next couple of weeks and guess which is cheaper?” You sighed and Alex let out a huff, tugging her lip into her mouth, “so unless you’ve got another solution in that big brain of yours, Professor Blake…”
She paused for a moment, her eyes drifting across to the arm chair the James would frequent after dinner, now left empty every evening before they shifted in the direction of the kitchen where her single plate was stashed in the dishwasher, where she consistently was making a meal for one.
“Actually…. I do…” She couldn’t help but smile as the idea started to spring to life in her brain.
“Oh?” You asked, pausing in your scrolling through the Airbnb site.
“Come stay with me.”
“Are you serious?” You asked, suddenly sitting upright and she chuckled.
“Yes. I’m in DC, it’s a nice house in a good neighborhood, decent commute. I’ve got a guest room, there’s a home office and another extra room you could toss a desk in or do whatever you’d like with. James used it as an office but he took most of the furniture when he moved. It’s been sitting empty since.”
“Alex… I really don’t want to intrude….”
“You wouldn’t be.” She took a sip of her drink, “I’ve discovered I’m not too fond of an empty house. Despite the fact that James was gone a lot for work there was still a feeling of him here, now it’s just kinda lonely. I could use the company.” She laughed.
“You sure you wouldn’t get sick of me if we’re working together too? I mean that might be a lot…”
“It’ll make my commute to Quantico far less boring.” She teased and you let out a huff of a laugh, “there’s a backyard pool and hot tub…”
“Oh now you’re just tempting me.”
“You need a place to stay, and I have space just sitting here unused. I enjoy your company, it’s the least I could do.”
“Okay.” You smiled in the direction of your phone, finally closing your laptop, “but only until I find an actual place, promise I’ll be on my best behaviour and you feel free to kick me out whenever you’re sick of me.”
“I doubt that will happen.” She smirked and you rolled your eyes before your head turned to the beeping coming down the hall.
“Ah, fuck. I’ve gotta swap my laundry over.”
“Go.” She waved you off, “it’s getting late anyways. I’ll send you the address and some pictures in the morning, let you know what you’re getting into.”
“If it’s good enough for you, I’m sure it’s perfect.”
“Night y/n.”
“G’night Alex.”
With a soft smile on your cheeks you hit the hang up button on your phone before pocketing it and wandering down the hall to deal with the laundry. You let out a content sigh as you moved back into the main room, scooping up your wine and dropping onto the couch with considerably less stress tensing up your body. The move itself was already intimidating, but you weren’t about to let that stop you, you always powered through. Now, you had someone already willing and prepared to help you through things and figure out the details before the brass had even sent through your papers. Perhaps your move to Washington was not only going to go smoother than expected but was exactly what the universe had in store for you.
