• Writing this for anyone struggling with: Alopecia, hair loss, thin hair, diseases, etc A few people i know have alopecia, and I think it's beautiful so I wrote this.

•.Black female reader in mind, but no specifics except hair texture. Sanji x F!reader

• Word count: 1.9k

• ⚠️: Self doubt, self hatred, depression, body dysphoria. Goes through the process of losing more hair, and shaving it off completely.

"Do you need any more help in the kitchen?" You looked over at your boyfriend. Everyone left the dining hall an hour ago, and it was only the two of you left. Cleaning up the mess as usual.

"No, I'm ok baby" Sanji turned to you as he washed the last few remaining dishes. "You haven't had a bath yet right?" He puffed out some smoke from his cigarette. The cherry glowing on his slender fingers before he rubbed your back. "No, I haven't. I guess I should huh? I've been cleaning all day, my hair got messy too." He hummed. "Go relax Ma chérie, i'll take care of the dishes and then I'll join you in the sh—" You instantly shake your head to the request. He turns to you, taking out his cigarette. His eyes filled with concern. "Are you ok my love? Did I say something wrong?"

You shake your head again and rub your arm timidly. "I think I'll just bathe alone tonight. Besides, I need to wash my hair. It takes me all night, and you look tired so.."

He hums lightly before placing the clean dishes in the cupboards. He opened his mouth to speak, his eyes filled with concern before you left a tender kiss on the side of his cheek. "Goodnight Sanji, I'll see you In bed ok?" He nods, not really able to speak before you skip out of the kitchen and into the bathroom and lock the door.

You stretch your arms a bit in the mirror before taking off your long wig. The curls bouncing up as you lift it off your head. If it was up to you, you'd keep it on. But you needed to treat the matted mess underneath your wig cap if you wanted to see any progress. "Ok.." You mumble before pulling out your cosmetics bag. "I need to try Dr. Miracles enhance oil after I wash my hair with…Dammit where is it?!"

You move items out of the bag before you pull out a small shampoo bottle. The big fat label meeting your gaze 'Hair growth'..

"Perfect!" You exclaimed, before stripping the rest of your clothes off and dipping yourself in the comfortable water.

You peeled off your wig cap before throwing it to the floor. Your hands immediately snuggling over your matted hair.

"Holy shit— I actually think it's growing!" You smile a bit at the long feeling in your hair. A bit upset you didn't check first in the mirror of how much was actually growing. "Alright.." You exhale, before unraveling your braids, and dipping your head into the warm water.

Your thoughts drifted to a certain blonde, and how soon it'd be when youd face him with thick, long hair. Your real hair. Not that wig or the extensions you always wore with confidence around the ship. You definitely arent going to miss how hot it burned with it on in the sun, or how itchy it got at night when you cuddled up to Sanji in bed. Or how guilty you get when you turn down sanjis requests to run his slender fingers through your scalp with your favorite shampoo.

No, you weren't going to miss any of that.

But, they did make you happy..and comfortable. You wouldn't mind experiencing freedom and control with your hair though. In fact it was what you were hoping for.

You were starting to wonder what would happen if Sanji saw you without the wig as you are now. Large bald spots and thinning strands that kept you worked up no matter how many times you tried to fix it. Oils, body therapy, fruits vegetables, diets, shampoos, and therapy. You've tried it all. The routine you're building now, being one of the many attempts.

Was it all for nothing? Did your hair actually grow or were you just imagining things?

Would he be disgusted? Ashamed of you?

Honestly, you didn't want to find out. Good thing you have the wigs. For now.

"Ok…time for shampoo then I gotta braid my hair again!" You lifted your hair out of the tub. You noticed how after your hair met contact with the water, already some of it started to fall off your head.

"Shit…" you mumbled, a bit nervous to continue scrubbing your hair, but you comply. Lightly, and hesitantly scrubbing your scalp. Feeling all the open spots where hair should be.

It was disappointing, yet again another treatment didn't work. You weren't seeing progress. In fact, as you scrubbed more hair fell out. No matter how softly you rubbed, or how lightly you brushed your hair.

It still came out.

"No—nonononono" You stopped washing your hair once a huge chunk came out and into your palm. You get out of the tub and rush for the mirror, your breath heavier and your chest tight while you struggle to open the bathroom door.

"SHIT!! PLEASE—" You stumble your way from the bathroom to the mirror. Your hands gripping the edge of the sink.

Most of your hair was gone, only to be replaced by big spots.

You felt like you could faint. The hopes you had of having control over your hair are gone. In replacement is just…nothing.

Well, almost nothing. There's still tiny amounts of hair…but it's thin. It won't last long…

"FUCK…NO" Your breath hitches before you let out a sob, a scream? Does it really matter? Tears fall down your face while you examine yourself in the mirror. You felt like all the control you had, was gone. You couldn't help but let out a wail as you threw your hair products on the ground. Some cracking at the hard blows.

"Y/N, love…are you ok?" A soft knock could be heard at the door. Your eyes widen before you gulp down your broken voice, trying not to whine. It was almost painful to hold back. "S-Sanji…yes I'm ok..I'm fine" You breathed heavily, trying to put on your wig.

"You don't sound fine baby. Can you open the door?"

Your heart sank to your stomach as you let out a breathy "yes". You didn't have time to put the wig on, so you dumped it under a few towels before covering your head up with a large towel and slowly opening the door.

Your boyfriend stood in the door, worry plastered on his face as he looked at you. His eyes softened once he saw how puffy and red your eyes were. "Baby…" He moved swiftly inside the bathroom before locking the door behind him. His fingers instantly come up to your face as he wipes away the remaining tears.

"What's wrong? Are you hurt?" You shake you head softly before he starts checking your face and body for any marks or injuries. "Sanji wait—" You grip the towel wrapped around your head and body before he can pull it off. "What's wrong?" He rubbed his thumb on your cheek, the action making your throat clench back a whine..You felt dizzy, confused, hideous.

You didn't want him to see you like this.

"I just..I don't" You couldn't talk, the big lump in your throat grew every time you even dared. You sank to the bathroom floor, clutching the towel over your body. He kneeled down with you,his hands wrapping around your waist before pulling you into his lap. Your wet body dampened his suit, but he didn't seem to care.

He kissed your forehead repeatedly while rubbing your back. "Sanji…it's gone" He kissed your head more,his voice was low and soft. "What's gone, baby?" You hiccup as the knot in your throat finally lets go. Letting out a long wail.

He rubbed your back while his lips mumbled soft words of comfort on your cheek. "It's ok, it's ok…I'm here..let it out"

You shake your head against his chest. Your eyes were almost swollen at that point. "No it's not ok! Everything is-"

He could see you were distraught..but about what? He didn't want to force you to talk if you weren't comfortable. But what was he supposed to do?

He held you closer to him and rested his chin on the top of your head as you cried.

Minutes later you calmed down a bit, wiping your tears with the back of your free hand while the other gripped the towel for dear life.

"Sweetheart, look at me" He gently moved his hand under your chin, his slender fingers rubbing gently against your swollen throat. You peeked your puffy eyes up at him, he gave a small smile before kissing your cheeks. "There she is, that's my baby…"

You hiccuped again before letting your eyes rest closed. Your grip on the towel slightly less tight as you relaxed in his touch. He kissed your nose before rubbing the small of your back.

"My hair…" you bit your lip, eyes darting away from his. "It's gone..most of its gone"

"Your hair?" You nodded again before he hesitantly put his hand behind the back of your head. "Can I…? Take it off sweetheart? I promise you're safe with me."

Your grip on the towel instantly came back. You breathed out, his eyes looking at you worried. "Ok.."

He slowly took off the towel, seeing your hair... Your real hair for the first time.

You covered your face with your hands in embarrassment and shame before his gentle cold fingers pulled them away to give you soft kisses.

"Don't look at me…I'm hideous" the knot on your throat started to tie again. His brows furrowed before kissing your head all over. His long fingers coming to rub and massage the backs of your head and neck while you silently cried in his arms.

"Don't you dare say that…ever again. You're beautiful"

"NO- I'm not!! It's gone! It's all gone…"

You feel him take a deep breath and he kisses you on the temple. "Its ok love...its ok"

His soft words made you cry harder.

"Come here. Come on sweetheart. You need to sit." He lifts you up and places you on the sink counter while wiping your puffy eyes. "You're beautiful…" He mumbled against your head as he placed kisses around all your insecurities.

"You're everything to me, and I will never stop loving you...no matter what happens…ok?" "You're breathtaking..with or without hair Y/N"

You nod against his shoulder as he rubs a circle between your shoulders.

After a moment, when you felt steady enough to walk again, he takes the towel from your head. "Here..I'll help you get through this ok?"

He kisses your cheek. "What do you want to do? I'll help you sweetheart"

You thought for a second.

You wanted to try using something other than the care products. They either didn't work, or they made it worse...you were tired of seeing the patches of what was left of your hair. So you said the first thing that popped into your head.

"Cut it off…"

He nodded almost immediately before lifting you off the sink onto his lap again.

He gave your head a last soft kiss before taking the hair clippers and shaving off what remained of your hair.

His hand came to rest with yours as he kissed your head.

"It's gone….' You whine before burying your head on his chest. He rubs your back softly before the machine turns on again.

Your eyes instantly open as you feel soft petals of hair fall on your cheeks.

Blonde petals of hair.

"SANJI—"

He kissed your forehead repeatedly before the machine turned off again. He smiled down at you. You couldn't help but smile too along with a few tears down your cheeks.

"Thank you…"

“Alright, Sae. You’re ready?” You asked with a confident smile.

Your daughter clapped excitedly and braced herself when you turned on the hair clippers.

“Oh she’s gonna do it, she’s gonna do it. Drum roll” Eddie tapped on the bathroom wall like drums as Salem pressed the hair clippers against her forehead.

She slid the blade through her hair and yelled in excitement when her waist-long hair fell on the ground.

This was what your daughter wanted for her 19th birthday: hair clippers so she could shave her head.

“Ouch, it’s pulling on my hair” She winced in pain

“That’s because it’s too long to go with the clippers straight away, Lemmy. I told you it was better to cut it first” You chuckled and retrieved the clippers away from your daughter’s grasp.

Grabbing the hair scissors from the bathroom cabinet, you tied her thick, hazelnut hair in a ponytail before cutting it as close to the root as possible.

Along with doing the one thing she was craving the most for the past 6 months, Salem decided to also help those in need by donating her hair to a charity company that made human hair wigs for women and children who were undergoing cancer treatment or had alopecia.

For many years Salem’s hair was complimented, envied, desired, and a topic of heated discussion between hairdressers whenever she decided to chop off a few inches. No one could understand how someone with such long, thick, shiny, healthy hair was able to even think of cutting it short - let alone shave it off!

But Salem Kingston wouldn’t be Salem Kingston if she didn’t love to cause a commotion. And you wouldn’t be her mother if you weren’t already used to the fact that Salem - much like her father - would always do the exact opposite of what people want her to do.

Truth be told, you didn’t care if your daughter wanted to be bald or have waist-long hair as long as she was happy. And you could proudly say your husband thought the same.

Eddie’s words echoed in your mind “My baby girl will do what my baby girl wants to do and I support her rights as much as I support her wrongs. Just don’t tell her I said that otherwise, she’ll take advantage of me”.

“There we go, now it’ll be easier” You stated, laying her thick ponytail inside the grocery bag Eddie brought to you.

“Thanks, Mom” Salem smiled and continued to shave her head.

You quickly glanced at Eddie, who had tears pooling in his eyes already. A faint chuckle escaped your lips as you kissed his cheek “Hold it together, papa bear. I’ll go grab the Polaroid so we can take some pictures”

Before leaving the bathroom you stared one more time at Eddie and Salem side by side. Now, with half of her head shave, she looked so much like Eddie. The strong, thick eyebrows, the big expressive green eyes, and now the buzzcut. These two made up the two pieces of your heart.

“What’s wrong, Dad? You don’t like it? Do you think I look ugly?” Doubt could be heard in Salem’s voice as she looked at her father’s reflection in the mirror.

“Of course not, chickadee! You look gorgeous, baby! I’m just emotional because you’ve grown so fast and now look at you, you’re a woman now! You’re not my little princess no more, the one that came running after me backstage whenever I walked to the gorilla, crying and asking me to stay with you a bit longer because you didn’t want me to go out in the ring and get a boo-boo. You’re growing up and don’t need your old man anymore”

“Dad” Salem turned off the clippers and turned around so she could look at her father face to face, “I’ll always need you! I don’t know what I'll do without you the day I move out. You’re my dad, the one man I know will never let me down, you’re my teacher, my best friend, my twin” Salem smiled when Eddie chuckled at her last statement. “You’re the only person on earth who truly understands me. Because we’re the same… ‘two hearts beating as one’, wasn’t that what you always told me when I was a kid?”

Eddie nodded and Salem continued “It’ll always be like that, Dad. No one can ever change or replace it, no matter how old I am or where I am, you’re my father and I love you forever”

The dictionary definition of blush is: “to redden, as from self-consciousness, embarrassment, or shame/to make red; flush/a reddening, as of the face/rosy or pinkish tinge.” All copied directly from dictionary.com

While everyone is capable of the warm feeling in the skin, “blushing” does not show in all skin tones. Dark skin, for example, does not show the red or pink. And if you look in the comments of my post, you’ll find a ton of poc that explicitly say they do not blush. Some do, yes, but not everyone does and not everyone shows it the same. So it’s much kinder and more inclusive to say something like “skin warmed or tingled” instead of “blush.”

And not everyone has hair that you can run fingers through. Curly hair gets fingers stuck and it’s not possible to do that. Cradling the head is a similar tender gesture of affection that is more inclusive. And white peoole can have curly hair too btw, although curly hair is more synonymous with people of color.

When you only have one type of person in mind, you unconsciously tell others that they are not worthy and not lovable. The point of reader insert fic is to escape, and everyone deserves the same level of escapism. People of color, plus size people, queer people, older, those with curly hair, etc all should feel included too. Like I said in my original post, it’s a kindness. Why wouldn’t you want to show that kindness to people?

And I personally have a friend with alopecia. She isn’t super bothered by it day to day, but I bet that comment would be really hurtful to her. Plus, many people have shaved heads or a pixie cut. Shouldn’t they feel seen too? Not everyone has long straight hair.

Honestly, their feelings of BETRAYAL. They'd be so overdramatic. They love to brush and braid and style and do all sorts of stuff with your hair: hair masks, hair stylings, curlings, rollers, would platonic bathing even be a thing 🤔😳 seperated by gender or whatever, or maybe your reader is an adult and you're on that stepcest shiz and that's 🤌 a ok. god the Wayne money makes a sort of communal bathing activity possible for, them to have some sort of big ass tub room or some luxurious "marble bathroom with cascading water from the ceiling into a big square in floor tub that could fit like 15 people in it" type shit, or you mostly have some privacy bathing wise BUT they sometimes take you to a spa where you've got some of them with you and, you know, you're naked so, depending on context this is either mildly embarrassing (oh it's just "your family" but you're shy) or downright humiliating (you know they arent 'actually' your adoptive family or youre a kidnapping victim or whatever).

They all do so much and more and take you to high end salons, and, suddenly, what did you DO??? Where did it all go??? I've had haircuts before where I've gotten a good ten inches chopped off, going from like center of the back to just above the shoulders, and also, like, I've also been a cheap bitch and cut my own hair before a few times, nothing fancy or risky, just combing it out ultra straight after a shower and cutting it even length all around

They're going from being able to do all sorts of styles with it, to, maybe you can barely do a small ponytail and maybe it causes so much traction alopecia it ain't worth it. And you're either so casual about getting/giving the haircut ,or, feel regret later and try and hide it but, regardless, they find out for sure. God, like, have you see Catwoman and Batwoman because they might be the first to notice. Both of them have luscious hair and as your official "new moms" they're the ones who like to look after you and the other girls (Barbara, Cassandra, there's so many of these mf'in comic books I'm sure there's more, Carrie Kasey is from an alternate timeline so she isnt really here). Anyways Selina always being physically affectionate and running her hands through your hair and tbh idk a lot about Katherine but she seems cool and she was shown in the Young Justice show which tbh is kind of where I've been picturing this all to take place, or like, something similar. Both of them are also rich heiresses and, also, you know, women so, regardless of your gender they always get you such luxurious skin and hair products and insist on mothering you and pampering you.

Seriously do you wonder if like the entire family excluding you has to have secret meetings where they negotiate around a calendar who gets to spend time with you like "We wanted to take them to our favorite spa this weekend" "well, they told me that they wanted to go somewhere with lots of animals, so, I'm taking them to that new famous zoo overseas. You'll have to reschedule" "dibs on next Friday, we were gonna do a movie night" "that won't work because there's a convention they've really been looking forward to and I was going with them" and also, would they even snipe each other's plans like 'oh shit that sounds way better than what I had in mind'. They overhear one another, discussing planning to surprise you with something they know you'll like or want to do, and the eavesdropper will snag it first. But also like, not always in a toxic backstabbing way, they're all a loving family albeit with Tons And Tons Of Issues (welcome to the Wayne house, bitch)

But anyways, rambling aside before I immediately begin a rant about another idea, I imagine it'd be kind of contextual how they react to your drastic hair transformation. Are you 'stuck in the manor' cause you're a grounded young adult or a consciously aware kidnapping victim this is all kind of being imposed onto. Or I've also thought of, we've discussed the whole age regression memory loss adoption thing, and potentially just being scooped up, but I've also thought about option c: you were a legit sidekick but then genuinely want to leave or stop and like, they'll let you choose to stop crime fighting but they won't let you leave the family and be on your own. Either way, the fam's reaction could range from some of them being scolding, to being sad, to being disappointed in you and feeling like this is indicative of some sort of problem i mean like "oh no a sudden haircut what if this means they're feeling kinda down, not anything about the kidnapping tho" like, you know how it can be almost satirical where people will overanalyze the situation and suggest the most bonkers thinks instead of accepting the truth. They're rushing to "fix" all kinds of problems. You're getting your bathroom completely emptied of all products and replaced with a customized, expensive routine like hair growth promoting oils and shampoos and masks and leave in conditioners like, borderline treating the loss of your hair like a tragedy like some follicle 9/11, which, also applies super hard to the next idea I'm gonna share before 😅

There's kind of, a personal haircare problem I've been encountering but is kind of specific but I could also see it making like an interesting sort of story. I have seborrheic dermatitis (which, it's dandruff, most skin conditions are actually autoimmune disorders) and my scalp just likes to randomly go crazy sometimes and, well, i can't tell if it's the use of a "safe for daily use" clarifying shampoo in tandem with the potentially drying anti dandruff shampoo, or the seborrheic dermatitis inherently, or just a dry scalp that's being exacerbated by the wrong shampoo, or even years of my own high ponytails, but, I've noticed a recent change in my hair texture with some noticeable hair thinning, so. Onto the concept, what if the fam was obsessed with your hair but you insist on being able to buy or choose your own products and they aren't possessive enough that they're controlling what your personal hygiene routines and such are (yet), so, here you are experimenting with new products and routines and just trying to have fun and you. Accidentally fuck up your own hair, or notice a problem, and you're too nervous to go to them because 1. You'll feel stupid about it and you don't want them to look down on you 2. What if they have a weird reaction about it 3. Bruce would probably take you straight to a dermatologist and what if that doesn't help and maybe you have some internalized trauma from being poor in your old life that you don't like "wasting money/resources on unnecessary dr visits if I can figure it out myself 🥺 im sorry"

But like if you outright damaged your own hair I feel like that'd really feed into their whole all around neurosis on needing to take care of you. Infantalizing sort of "SEE, this is why you need our help, can't you see we just care about you ����". Some of them might be more invested or differently prioritized than others but none of them are happy, just, differing levels of being upset haha. The "iron fist" really comes down on regulating you, from what you to how you brush your hair to what goes in it and even how you sleep. Getting enough vitamins and minerals in your body while good rest is important, so, not only do they have to male sure you're eating and not having any deficiencies, but also, Bruce is occasionally checking those hidden cameras to make sure you're fast asleep when you need to be, him and, really anyone who can use the Batcomputer and has the will, tracking your sleeping patterns and seeing if you're sleeping soundly or if there's any nightmares or you're popping awake or, even maybe if your phone and certain things will have to be confiscated for you to rest, IF those are things you even were allowed to have in the first place.

But yeah these guys got me acting totally weird and on some self indulgent personal fantasy shit but ykw if you're subscribed to me you're probably a lil weird too and that's ok 👍

He probably just thinks you’re stylish. Once he figures it out though (and it takes a While) and realizes you’re insecure about it, he goes about trying to comfort you, to the best of his ability. He’s not great at comforting you, it’s Dan Heng, but he tells you he thinks you’re beautiful just the way you are, and it’s very sweet and you know Dan Heng wouldn’t lie to you. Especially not about something like that.

Gepard Landau: has always enjoyed hat and wig shopping with you in his free time, not realizing it was because you were actually super insecure about your condition. It doesn’t bother him at all. Until he learns it bothers you. Then he sets about trying to figure out how to make you feel more comfortable in your own skin. He tells you you look great just the way you are, and that your worth is not determined by your condition. It’s all very sweet and comforting, and maybe you feel more comfortable being around him without your hats and wigs.

Jing Yuan: the General has always been Bold. And he’s Bold in the way he lets you know he doesn’t care that you have alopecia areata, he thinks you’re beautiful regardless. He shows his affections by kissing your hair. It’s almost a little…embarrassing to be honest. But it does make you feel better to know he feels so strongly about this issue. He really does think you’re beautiful just the way you are, no hats or wigs necessary.

Blade: Blade is blunt, and he’s never been good at being considerate and affectionate, so when he first realizes you’re insecure about your condition, he really does try his best to reassure you. You’re struggling with a hat, almost late for a mission with him when he gruffly tells you that: “you look fine without it.” And honestly? It’s one of the sweetest things you’ve ever heard him say. You ask him if he means it and he nods and quickly tells you that you better hurry and decide if you’re gonna keep fighting with that hat or let it go, at least this once.

It's small enough to hide but big enough to be obvious that you're hiding something. Eddie swears to you that you can't see it now you've tugged it up into a ponytail, but Eddie's a huge liar. He'd spare your feelings before ever admitting he can see it.

"Are you lying?" you ask. He definitely is.

"Seriously, baby. You can't tell... and even if you could-"

"Eddie!" You scramble to the mirror and turn, trying your best to spot the bare patch by yourself.

"I'm just saying! I'm just saying, you don't have to worry. You don't have to hide it."

Eddie follows you to the mirror. He holds your shoulder firmly in one hand and brings the other to your head to smooth down your hair. He's careful as he encourages a band of hair over to the side, his fingertips unbearably kind. He tightens up your hair tie and takes your small can of hairspray into his hands, shaking it.

"You can't see it," he says as he sprays your hair flat. "I promise. Please don't worry about it, angel."

You bite your tongue, furious with yourself as a freak wave of tears wells in your eyes. "I can't not worry about it, Eddie."

"Let me worry about it."

"You- you'll tell me if it looks obvious?"

He puts down the hairspray and turns you by your shoulders. His eyes match his expression, fondness furthered by the puppy dog's he's giving you. "I swear on my life." His smile turns wry. He chucks your chin. "You're fucking beautiful, you know that?"

"I'd be much prettier if I weren't balding," you say hotly.

Eddie loathes your self disgust. His smile drops into a frown, his hands rigid over your shoulders. Slowly, slowly, they relax. His fingers trail down the lengths of your arms until he's found and stolen your hands.

"You couldn't get any prettier. Physically impossible. Unfeasible. Nothing will change that, ever."

You look down at his hands, ring-clad, callus-wrought. The juxtaposition of them isn't lost on you. He's the softest touch you've ever met.

"Are you sure?" you ask weakly.

"Yes." His response is immediate. He shakes your hands until your lift your gaze to his angled head, forehead inclined seriously. "I'm sure. Positive, sweet thing. You're aces."

You relax.

"We don't have to go, you know. We could stay here, spark up, let me show you how much I mean it?" He wiggles his eyebrows at you suggestively.
