From "things you don't say reach me somehow anyway"
Buck shoots another curious look at Eddie and opens the card. His eyes scan whatever Chris has written there and then his fist comes up to his mouth and his eyes shine with unshed tears.
“Chris.” His voice breaks. He puts the card down, draws Chris into his arms. “You know I’m always gonna be there for you,” he murmurs softly. “Always.”
“I know,” Chris answers.
Eddie’s eyes prick. He backs out of the room and into the kitchen, telling himself he’s just giving Buck and Christopher a minute alone. But the truth is, there’s a flood of emotion welling up in his chest, and if he stays out there with them a second longer he’ll—well, he doesn’t really know what would happen, just that he needs to be somewhere else to breathe.
He stands in the kitchen, hands on the cool tile of the counter, staring vaguely out of the window above the sink but not really seeing anything in front of him. Instead he sees Christopher and Buck wrapped up in the gentlest of embraces. He’s always known that they adore each other, and it’s always made perfect sense to him. Why wouldn’t Eddie’s two favorite people in the world also be each other’s favorite?
But it hits him especially hard today. He thinks about that terrible night back in spring when he’d taken a baseball bat to his wall and freaked his kid out so badly he hadn’t been able to look at Eddie the next morning without tearing up.
But even scared out of his mind, Chris had known what to do. He’d called Buck. Because he’d known, the way Eddie knows, that Buck would take care of them both. Eddie knows Buck doesn’t take that trust lightly, but he wonders if Buck fully grasps what it means, for both Eddie and Christopher to trust someone that deeply after the way they’ve both been hurt before.
It’s kind of a miracle, if Eddie thinks about it. But then, a lot of things about Buck feel that way.
Eddie’s still dabbing at his eyes when he hears Buck enter the kitchen.
Ahhhh thank you for the ask!
So if I remember correctly, this was a bit of an unplanned moment in things you don't say between Buck and Chris. In that first scene with Chris, when Eddie tells him he's going to tell the people in his life what they mean to him, Chris kind of just went "oh I wanna do that too!" Which felt really right for the moment and as something Chris would do because he is just a sweetheart (like his dad)! And it also shows how, right off the bat, Eddie deciding to do this kind of vulnerable and loving thing also makes room for those people to also be vulnerable and loving.
I was really pleased with this moment because along with just being a really sweet moment between Chris and Buck, it actually serves as a great way to emphasize Eddie's dilemma: because CHRIS can easily tell Buck how much he means to them, but Eddie can't. And even though Buck and Chris's relationship doesn't fit into a neat box, he's still able to effectively communicate to Buck the place he holds in his life. Which, again, is not something Eddie is able to do yet.
Another aspect to this scene that I thought worked well was that we don't actually get to see what Chris says/writes to Buck. I thought this served two (well, three) functions: 1) it saved me from having to write it (haha) 2) it kept the moment as something kind of private and special between Buck and Chris. It makes it clear that they have their own unique relationship and dynamic outside of Eddie. and 3) it mirrors and emphasizes the way that Eddie doesn't have the words to tell Buck what he means to him.
But the truth is, there’s a flood of emotion welling up in his chest, and if he stays out there with them a second longer he’ll—well, he doesn’t really know what would happen, just that he needs to be somewhere else to breathe.
This is one of many times Eddie has to cut him off mid-thought in this fic. Because once he lets himself complete that thought (or any other thought about how much Buck means to him) the truth just becomes way too obvious. I think in this moment Eddie knows what he's feeling and he's just unwilling to identify that feeling to himself, so he has to justify it with something physiological (needing to breathe) vs. an actual emotion he can name and categorize.
Ok, listen, I am STILL not over Eddie's breakdown scene. I will NEVER be over that scene. It was such a stunning display of trust from both Chris and Eddie. And we all I think have discussed Eddie's trust issues and how his trust in Buck is somewhat miraculous given his past, but Chris's trust in Buck is also pretty miraculous. For a kid who's been left, at various times, by both of his parents, he's able to completely and unreservedly put his trust and his belief in Buck, someone who came into his life by choice, who really has no obligation to him. I just love that so much.

The Will
Buck and Eddie will not be able to talk about The Will until they are both ready to talk about what it truly represents.  Also they can't talk about it until they talk about all of the other things that happened between them which proceeded it.
The Will represents everything that happened between them up to the well but Eddie's reveal of it didn't explain why he did it.  He has many questions to answer not just "you'll fight for him and that's what I want for him".
Before they can discuss what it means, they also have to talk about the tsunami; the lawsuit; them making up twice (firehouse and Buck's kitchen); the well (Buck above it screaming and crying for Eddie, while Eddie was in it thinking mostly about Christopher and Buck) and the shooting because that was the moment when they truly believed they were going to lose each other for good.
Questions
1. Why did Eddie decide to name Buck as the legal guardian after the well?  They had only known each other for a little more than 1 1/2 years.
2. What does it mean?  Remember Eddie changed his will after the kitchen scene and the Christmas scene when Eddie was staring at Buck like he was his entire world.
3. Was it only supposed to be temporary?  Probably because Eddie knew then and still knows now that his parents will fight to get Christopher away from Buck. Based on the flashbacks Eddie had while he was in the well, his parents seem like the type of people that will challenge the legal guardianship. That's why it seems like it was a temporary solution that Eddie had set in place until he could execute his long term plan. It seemed like he was planning for something more permanent, i.e. Buck adopting Christopher or Buck becoming Christopher's step parent after Eddie and Buck got married.
4. What was the plan if Eddie was going to start a life with someone else? Would he keep Buck as the guardian or change it?
All of these question have to be answered because they why is just as important as the reveal.
Eddie is a planner and he never does things without preparing especially when it involves Christopher.  He may not be able to accept that it's ok to want something just for himself yet but he prepares very well for the important things.  Which leads to the question of why Buck and why the specific time frame?  Season 3 was all about the two of them and their "relationship".  Neither of them had love interests outside of each other (remember the sky diving episode where the lady asked if either of them was single?) They looked at each other, then at her and back to each other like "no, we're not single because we're together".  Also the infamous kitchen scene where it's crystal clear to those with 👀 they wanted each other and not from a brotherly or platonic standpoint.
The "Petty Eddie" persona always shows up whenever Buck's with the reporter or when he first met Abby at the train wreck.  He hates them but he won't tell Buck how he really feels about him; therefore any discussions about "the will" will have to wait until they are both ready.
Finally, KR saying it was discussed off screen is ridiculous because how is the audience supposed to know that? If it did happen off screen how come no one, not even Christopher has mentioned it? The perfect time would have been either of the times during 5x13 or 5x14 when Eddie and Christopher were talking in the kitchen. Eddie could have reminded Christopher about how Buck would look after him if something happened to Eddie or Christopher could have said "Dad, I remember Buck will take care of me if anything happens to you". Or Eddie could have reminded Christopher in 5x10 after he said "you could be dead next year". But that didn't happen. So a discussion about the will still needs to happen even if only for the audience's sake.

a day late but not short on fic. ready to get my heart destroyed on monday.

waiting for the hint of a spark by fallingthorns
Therein lies the crux of the Buck problem. Eddie’s in love with Buck, he knows it and thinks he has subconsciously known it for a while now. And he thinks that Buck loves him, too, knows that if he didn’t, he wouldn’t be spending every night at Eddie’s home and caring for his son as if he was his own, wouldn’t offer to drive Eddie to and from physical therapy appointments without making it seem like a hassle. But Buck deserves someone who can give him everything he needs, who can have his back all the time, and Eddie knows that he can’t be that person right now.
Because Buck deserves to be completely enveloped in love and affection, and Eddie can’t physically give him that, his constantly aching and useless arm an ever-present reminder. All he has to give is a one-armed hug, a broken mug, and a heart that wants too much that he doesn’t deserve. -- Or, when the bullet severs the nerves of his right arm, Eddie realizes the road to recovery doesn’t always have to be made of gravel.

“What’s wrong, Chris?” Eddie asks, his fingers slowing their combing.
“Dad, remember when you asked me what I wanted for my birthday?” Christopher asks, as if he hadn’t given Buck that list. Eddie hums in acknowledgement. “I think I’ve got it.”
“Hmm?”
“I want you to get a wife.”
Eddie chokes on nothing. “What?”

Buck goes.

The first time is unexpected but convenient. It's fun. Eddie's still technically married, and they're just learning how to become friends.
The second time is comfortable but exciting. It's warm. They're best friends, and Buck starts to believe they can maybe become something more.
The third time is inevitable but convulsive. It's heartbreaking. They're further apart than they've ever been, but Buck's heart is in it all the way.

Looking back, Eddie doesn’t really know where it all went sideways. It was a simple task given to him by two seemingly desperate, worried parents along with the promise of a hefty check to fund his burgeoning PI business.
They play the part well.
He knows better now.
Eddie can’t deny that he misjudged the situation. Any preconception wound up smashed to pieces from the second he laid eyes on Evan Buckley. And somehow, days spent listening and learning and living beneath the Peruvian sun led him here.

“I know,” Buck sighs. “And the sooner I fall asleep, the sooner it is.”

“Time is fake,” Buck says. “It feels sooner. That’s what matters.”
“Okay, I see your point,” Eddie says. “But, counterargument—what are you wearing?”

Buck breathes for a moment, then sets his shoulders. "Eddie, there's something I have to tell you."
"Do you?" Eddie asks flatly, still alarmed and doing his best to hide it. "I would've never guessed."
Buck swallows. "Eddie, I love you."
"Are you softening the blow, or buttering me up? Because, I've got to tell you, I'm still very worried regardless," Eddie tells him.
"No, you don't understand. I love you. I'm currently in love with you," Buck says as evenly as possible, and even then, his voice wobbles precariously there for a moment. He exhales. "You don't have to worry about it, though, because I've processed it and decided to—to find relief in telling you before moving on and moving forward."
Eddie stares at him. No response at all.
Well, at least he's not freaking out.

He loves the kitchen sink and the drying rack on the counter, because he always washes and Eddie always dries and sometimes when he dries he chips the grey bowls and breaks the white plates, but it doesn’t matter because he bought the set second hand and really, they don’t need more than three plates, three bowls, three mugs, and three forks.
“Just three?” Maddie asks.
“Yeah, me, Christopher, and Eddie,” he says, like it’s obvious.
Maddie gives a knowing smile. “And Taylor?”
He shrugs. “It’s not like the four of us hang out."
“So who’s plate is she borrowing when they leave?” Buck stays quiet. She sets her mug on the table. “Moving out might help, but no matter where you go, you’ll only have three plates.”

War was easy.
Eddie knows the sound of violence better than he knows his own voice. Knows it like a song he’s played so many times it’s burned into all the ruts and curves of his brain like a scar. Because it’s always been easier to sew on a severed limb under a spray of bullets, heart in is throat, than it is to look at someone he’s hurt and beg them to open up their heart up to his wreckage again. So yeah, war was easy. But this thing with Buck feels like a war in itself, only it’s not easy. It’s fucking brutal. Every step feels like a minefield, feels like being one step away from being blown to bits."

Another analysis, if I may
So, it's been established in 5x01 that Eddie's panic attack was brought on by the conscious idea of a future with An*. Speaking as someone with anxiety, I can't believe I didn't make this connection sooner.
The first thing most medical people tell you to do in the midst of a panic attack is to find an anchor point. The whole idea of this is to detract focus from what has triggered you and coax you back into reality. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Panic attacks don't generally last that long but the emotional repercussions can affect you even hours after.
Now, what's interesting about this is how the writers are structuring Eddie's arc for this season. He exhibits clear signs of PTSD (something I'm also intimately familiar with) which we've known from S3. However, Eddie's character is designed around a person who dismisses their problems because (a) they don't have time to deal with them, (b) there are more important things [Christopher, work, being a single parent, establishing a romantic relationship], or (c) because they consider the problem trivial and therefore it does not need attention to be dealt with. We know why Eddie has PTSD. We have a basic idea of his triggers, which I'm sure will develop more in upcoming episodes. What we don't know is what brings Eddie back from the brink - and no, video game therapy only gets you so far.
Tumblr media
Considering Eddie's past for turning to unhealthy outlets for trauma (underground fighting rings, impulse purchasing, verbally lashing out) and not finding clinical therapy effective, the writers have made it clear that things do not help Eddie recover. So, what does that leave? The answer is simple: people.
We've seen Eddie slowly open up to the 118 over the course of S3+. While a great portion of S4 was dedicated to Buck's arc, we still see Eddie confiding in his best friend as an open channel of communication (reuniting with An*, concern about advancments in technology and how they affect his family's security, challenges of being a parent). Being Captain and the oldest, Bobby has already been established as the 118's 'father figure'. We've seen Eddie confide in him and seek life advice in a mentor-mentee relationship dynamic - and by extension, Athena as a 'mother' figure ("can't really ask him what he knows without revealing there is something to know"). We've seen Eddie converse with Hen and Chim on personal but still family-friendly matters. These relationships are all significant as part of Eddie's support system, but who is the foundation? Who was his first connection in the 118? The one Eddie revealed the first piece of personal information to (that he has a son)? Buck.
Tumblr media
Buck has always been the cornerstone of Eddie's LA support system. He linked Eddie in with Carla for Christopher's sake. He drove Eddie to pick Chris up after the earthquake while reassuring him all day that schools had been upgraded to protect their students during natural distasters. He's clued in when Eddie's acting off ("There's definitely something going on with her. Eddie too." , "Eddie's sleeping with her but he's lying about it. It's like he's having an affair with his own wife."). He's the one looking after Chris when Eddie's goes on a date with An*. He's risked his life multiple times to save Eddie. He even knew about Eddie's therapy before he did his own sister's. Which brings me to the point that Buck is more than Eddie's cornerstone. He's Eddie's anchor to reality. Hear me out:
Tumblr media
Eddie's panic attack is featured early on in 5x01. We've already established in 4x06 that his love language is closer to touch (and acts of service), so it makes sense that he grounds himself through physical connection, right? He may not like leaning on anyone emotionally but there is certainly physical support via Buck. Don't even get me started on how many times they do rope rescues or manoeuvres on a harness and how metaphorical that is for tying oneself to another in more ways than one.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
When Eddie is shot, the entire sequence is filmed in a specific way to capture physical expression. The close-ups between Buck and Eddie (which is how the episode ends) are extremely intimate and foretelling of how Eddie brings himself back - physically and emotionally. He stretches his arm out toward Buck, not in a physical 'please pull me to safety' way but rather the emotional 'I'm slipping, please ground me here' way. Interesting, then, that Buck responds to this silent plea with the befitting "I'm gonna come! I got you!" which reads like 'I won't let you slip away' in his endeavour to physically touch Eddie and pull him from harm's way. "Stay down!" then also works as 'stay grounded, because I'm coming to get you'. Note here, also, how Eddie has already closed his eyes (read: resigned to his fate) before Buck reaches him, but when Buck finally pulls him under the truck, Eddie is startled awake again and brought back to consciousness (read: reality). Yes, this would be from the sudden and immense pain response, but this response would only occur if something triggered it, such as the grip on reality Eddie needs: Buck, in more ways than one. Buck, who continously tells Eddie, "I got you" (read: I've physically reached you) and "just stay with me" (read: I'm here, don't slip away). It's only appropriate then that Eddie asks "are you hurt?" because if his cornerstone is hurt, what does that mean for Eddie? What does that mean for them if they can't support one another? Judging from the law suit arc, I'd say it wouldn't work out well.
Tumblr media
This brings us to the Eddie's panic attack and ultimately, An*. Some of you have already pointed out the significance of how we see An*'s face blurred when she's trying to reach Eddie admist the chaos of his panic attack compared to Buck's clarity when Eddie is lying injured in the street. For me, this definitely reads that An* can't reach Eddie the way Buck can, but it's more still. If we're to hold on to the theory that Buck is Eddie's reality in some form or another, then it makes sense that he panics thinking of a *supposed* reality with An*. Why? Because she's not reality. She's a fantasy. She's what Eddie is *supposed* to want because she fits into what has clearly been broadcasted to Eddie by his parents of the perfect heteronormative family. However, we've already seen Eddie begin to chip away at the teachings of his youth by making Buck Christopher's legal guardian in the event of Eddie's passing. I know very little about Eddie's culture so I'll leave that for others to interpret but I get the vibe that his parents wouldn't entirely be accepting of their children straying from a heteronormative path. Just look at the way they picked apart Shannon for everything, and she was a woman. The thing about a fantasy is that they're fun. They're products of our idolisation. What they're not supposed to be is real, or at least easily attainable. Eddie has An* but she's reaching for a future he's learning maybe he doesn't want. Judging from his reaction to her tie suggestion (and getting a new suit altogether when it's made clear twice he didn't need one), An* is trying to design her own image of a happy family. There's nothing wrong with that, except it doesn't fit Eddie's, which means they need to go their separate ways. This is only reinforced in the subsequent hospital scene ("well, it wasn't a heart attack" "it sure felt like one") when it becomes clear that Eddie's used to feeling things that may not contain actual truths, such as deluding himself into having feelings for An*. If that's the case, then it's no wonder he needed her reassurance that "everything has been great, right?". Eddie sees her as a 'right now', unaware he's been subconsciously making plans for a different future already. So, we come full circle back to Buck.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The thing is, that small hand-on-the-shoulder-gesture in 5x01 mattered because there was a truth in it. I know we're still just feeding on crumbs right now but we're well aware this isn't the first time Eddie's reached out to Buck for some form of comfort to channel between them - no matter which one of them needed it. It's no coincidence that Eddie's second panic attack was onset during a call where elevated stress levels as the result of a near-death/panic experience led to three air traffic controllers passing out. The only reason Eddie's attack diminishes is because Chim reminds him he has a job to do. This stops the attack, but the feelings are still coursing through Eddie. It'll only take a hairline trigger (at this point) to re-activate those feelings in the form of a full-blown panic attack. So, Eddie does his job, but his mind still isn't in the clear. What does he need to do? Stabilise himself. Bring some focus back on reality. Sure enough, that's when Buck appears beside him. What are Buck's first words during the scene? "It's okay. Just breathe. You had a heart attack". Yes, he was talking to the patient, but he was well within Eddie's earshot, who was recently convinced he had a heart attack. The only difference with the first time was that Eddie didn't have the person who grounds him there beside him. But he does now. So, what does Eddie do? He acts on his need to stabilise himself emotionally by reaching out and touching Buck - a feeling of comfort and home, because Eddie (whether he knows it or not) has built a home for him and Chris around Buck. But that's not all. Note how (and yes, I'm getting very specific here) Eddie actually touches Buck just as he begins to notice another employee feeling unwell? We're literally seeing a heart and/or panic attack about to resurface. With Eddie's anxiety still humming beneath his skin, of course he's going to need that instant reassurance before another one comes. The air traffic controllers may be the ones having heart attacks, but it's definitely meant to reflect Eddie's situation like a crystal-clear mirror.
Tumblr media
So, with the framework of 5x01 in mind, it's pretty clear where the writers are taking Eddie's narrative for S5. Even if Buddie doesn't become canon, there is a clear trajectory for where EddieAn* is headed. In extension, we've already been given a preview into what is sure to escalate a tenfold on the BT front and their issues, what with Buck ready to maintain an authentic, romantic connection with someone and T focused on her career. I'm certainly not going to ever shame women being strong and motivated in the professional sphere, but I cannot see how this relationship is going to play out in the long run any more than EddieAn*. The writers have already laid the groundwork from 2x01, and I think they're finally read to build that skyscraper, beginning with Eddie's recovery arc.

once you find it (it can never be replaced)
Wrote this as a little late birthday present for @diazchristopher! I hope you like it Neethu! Happy belated birthday!
Summary: It’s not an earth shattering realization, there’s nothing dramatic about it. It’s as simple as it is inevitable (also read on AO3)
Buck realizes he’s in love with Eddie three days before Halloween. It’s not an earth shattering realization, there’s nothing dramatic about it. It’s as simple as it is inevitable. It happens on a Monday morning at the station. The coffee maker breaks on the first cup of the day, and nobody's happy about it. Chimney makes a run to the coffee shop to get them through, but he’s not back yet, and Eddie is glaring daggers at the broken machine, as if he can intimidate it into working again.
“Hey, Bobby, can we get a Hildy?” Albert asks.
Eddie whips around before Bobby can say anything. “Oh, no. No, no, no, no. It’s bad enough I have one of those hell machines spying on me at home.” He glances at Buck. “I refuse to let Hildy infiltrate the station.”
Bobby chuckles. “Calm down, Eddie. We couldn’t afford a smart coffee maker anyway.”
Eddie breathes a sigh of relief, and Buck can’t help the smile that pulls at the corner of his lips. “You’re ridiculous,” is what he says out loud. “God, I love you,” is what he says in his head. It doesn’t take him by surprise, doesn’t freak him out like maybe it should, given that he’s dating someone who isn’t Eddie. He’s always known his feelings for Eddie were more complicated than simple friendship. He hasn’t let himself dwell on it, has always had good reasons for ignoring the flutter in his chest when Eddie looks at him a certain way, or the warmth that cascades through his body when Eddie finds a reason to touch him (a hand on his shoulders as he passes by, an arm brushed against his, a knee pressed against his thigh in the truck). It was always there, a faint hum in the back of his mind.
Easy to ignore, until suddenly it’s not.
Buck breaks up with Taylor on a Tuesday in November, two weeks after the hum in his mind has graduated to an all encompassing buzzing under his skin, three days before their six month anniversary. It’s not dramatic, or even very painful, for either of them, and Buck knows he made the right decision. He likes Taylor, but he doesn’t love her, and as sad as she is to see him go, he knows that she doesn’t love him either.
He’s not sure why it takes him so long between the realization and the decision to break things off with Taylor. Maybe it’s because breaking up with Taylor means actually acknowledging that he’s in love with Eddie to someone other than himself. Not that he says it, but he knows it’s implied in the way he says, “I just don’t think this is what I want,” and the way she just nods, like she’s seen this coming. Which she probably has. Subtly has never been Buck’s strong suit.
He announces the breakup the next day at work because Chimney is asking when he’s free to babysit Jee-Yun next and mentions something about not wanting to get in the way of Buck’s relationship and Buck assures him that there’s no relationship to get in the way of. Chimney pats him on the shoulder sympathetically.
“I’m sorry, Buckaroo,” he says with a small smile.
“I’m okay,” Buck insists. “I was the one who broke it off.”
“Oh.” Chimney sounds dumbfounded, which Buck supposes is fair, given how often Buck talks about being lonely. “Why?”
Because the universe has a cruel sense of humor, Eddie choses that moment to step out from the otherside of the ladder truck. “Why what?”
“Buck broke up with Taylor,” Chimney says, like he’s not stepping in the middle of an emotional minefield--after all, none of the mines will blow him up.
Eddie’s eyes widen almost imperceptibly. But Buck knows him well enough to see it.
“We wanted different things,” Buck says, shrugging. The bell rings before Eddie or Chimney can ask more questions. Buck sighs in relief.
By the end of shift, everyone at the station knows about the breakup, because Chimney knows, and Chimney loves gossip, and Buck told Chimney he could tell people. It saves him the trouble of having to acknowledge it, lets the word spread without him having to have the same conversation a dozen times. Instead he focuses on his work, pretending not to notice the sympathetic looks his coworkers keep flashing him. Poor Buck, they’re all probably thinking, alone again.
Well. Almost all of them. Buck has no idea what Eddie is thinking, but he’s sure it’s not the same sad sympathy everyone else is exuding because Eddie never even liked Taylor. He’s probably relieved he doesn’t have to make awkward small talk with her again, if anything. Eddie watches Buck like their other coworkers, but the look in his eyes isn’t sympathy. Buck pretends not to notice Eddie’s looks, too.
A week after Buck’s breakup with Taylor, he’s leaning against Eddie’s kitchen counter with a beer in his hand, and Eddie’s at the sink washing dishes (only fair, since Buck cooked dinner). Christopher is in his room working on homework, and the house is quiet, which only serves to emphasize the tension that’s been building between the two men for the last week, like a rubber band slowly pulled taut, just barely held in place between two fingers.
“So,” Eddie starts, in a tone of forced casualness. “How have you been doing since your breakup?”
Buck takes a swig of his beer. “Fine. It was my choice, and I don’t regret it.”
“Your choice,” Eddie echoes, placing the last dish on the drying rack, before turning to face Buck. “Y’know, you never really told me why.”
Buck gulps. “Eddie…”
“Why did you break up with Taylor?” Eddie asks, dark eyes boring into Buck. The rubber band stretches even further. “And I don’t want the lie you told Chimney.”
Buck sets down his beer, and crosses his arms. “Why did you break up with Ana?”
“It wasn’t what I wanted,” Eddie doesn’t hesitate. “She wasn’t who I wanted.”
Buck’s arms fall back to his sides. “Who-what do you want, then?” He tries to swallow the word “who” in the back of his throat, but it comes out anyway. His palms are sweating and his heart is racing and oh, God, what if he’s wrong about this?
Eddie just takes a step forward, expression unreadable. “Don’t you know, Evan?” His voice doesn’t shake, but it’s quiet, almost a whisper. Like he’s forcing the words out before he loses his ability to speak completely.
It’s not even really an answer, not entirely. There’s just enough plausible deniability that Eddie could walk it back. Maybe. If they weren’t six inches apart. If Eddie wasn’t looking at him like every hope and dream he’s ever had rely on what Buck does next. If the last time Eddie used Buck’s first name wasn’t in a hospital room. If Buck didn’t know Eddie so completely.
The rubber band snaps.
Buck practically lunges forward into Eddie’s space, wrapping his hands around Eddie’s neck and pulling him into a kiss. He kisses Eddie hard, pouring every ounce of pent up emotion from the last three and a half years into it, and Eddie kisses him back with equal intensity. Eddie’s hands on his waist, callused and warm, and Buck pushes Eddie up against the edge of the sink so their bodies are pressed together as firmly as their lips are. Buck’s fingers find their way from Eddie’s neck into his hair, and he tugs gently, earning a moan from the other man. Seizing the opportunity, Buck slides his tongue along Eddie’s lower lip, which falls open further to let Buck in. Time moves slow as honey around them, as they melt into each other. Nothing else in the world seems to matter except getting more and more of Eddie.
Buck’s giddy with the feeling. He’s kissing Eddie. Eddie is kissing him back. Eddie wants him. He has to pull back, unable to stop himself from letting out a small giggle.
“What?” Eddie asks, breathless. He sure is a sight, hair mussed and lips swollen. He looks wanton and a wave of smugness bubbles up in Buck’s chest because he did that.
“Nothing, I’m just happy,” Buck says softly, leaning down to rest his forehead against Eddie's. “I thought you might--but I didn’t want to get my hopes up.”
Eddie’s brown eyes soften with fondness. “Me too.”
Buck swallows. “Should we talk about this?”
“Probably," Eddie says, and then continues in that casual, matter of fact tone of his, "I’m in love with you."
“Oh, well, good,” Buck ducks his head and smiles bashfully. “I’m in love with you, too.”
Eddie sucks a breath through his teeth, moving back just so he can move in again at the right angle for a kiss. “Well, then. Are we done talking?”
Buck pretends to think about it for a moment. “Hm, yeah. I think we’re on the same page.”
He barely finishes his sentence before Eddie’s lips are on his again, and this time he’s the one pushed up against the counter, the cold tile digging into his back. He knows they have more to talk about--how to tell Christopher, how (and when) they want to tell the team, what this means for their working relationship--but that’s all secondary. They’ll figure it out, together. Because he’s Buck and Eddie is Eddie, and they’ve both been all in since the day they pulled a live grenade out of a man’s thigh together.
Right now, all he needs is for Eddie to never stop kissing him like this.
(Eddie never does.)

Hiyaa!
just because i came across the fact (idk if it's true. Idc because it's beautiful) that if 2 people look into each others eyes, their heartbeats sync.
i just thought that would be a lovely thing to write about with buddie. Or maybe you already have one like this already.
Just trying to give you inspiration or something.
have a lovely day!🤗
Thank you so much for this idea. I might have went down the rabbit hole and looked into it and it seems legit. I'm pretty fascinated by it, and it really is perfect for them. I hope you enjoy 💜

"Hey, Eds?"
Buck looks around the house as he kicks off his shoes and hangs up his jacket. There's no sign of Eddie, but Buck can hear his voice coming from down the hall.
Buck doesn't follow the sound, though. Instead, he walks into the living room where two heart monitors have been set up. It's something Buck would expect to see in a hospital, not the middle of Eddie's living room.
"What the hell?"
"Yeah," Eddie says, startling Buck when he appears suddenly behind him. "That was my thought too."
"What is Hen going to do to us?" Buck hisses.
When Hen had first mentioned needing Buck and Eddie's help with a project for school, Buck hadn't hesitated to agree. Now, looking at the machines, he's starting to wonder what exactly he agreed to.
"She assures me it'll be painless," Eddie says.
"And you believe her?"
Eddie shrugs. "It's Hen. It's not like she's going to drain us of our blood and watch our vitals as we bleed out on my living room floor."
Buck tilts his head as he watches Eddie. "That's oddly specific, Eds." A teasing grin spreads across his face when Eddie looks away. "Have you been watching horror movies without me again?"
"Of course I have to watch them without you." Eddie crosses his arms across his chest and raises an eyebrow. "You hate horror movies. They freak you out."
"Yeah, and they freak you out too," Buck says. "Especially when you watch them alone."
Buck knows that for a fact. He's gotten plenty of texts from Eddie late at night after he decided it was a good idea to watch some horror movie after Christopher had gone to bed.
There was one time Buck had to assure Eddie no one was lurking outside his house, and when that didn't work he drove over and checked it out for him. Turns out what Eddie had been seeing outside his window was a tree branch. Which Buck only teased him about a little bit.
So yeah, Buck knows what Eddie gets like after watching a horror movie.
"Alright, you boys ready?" Hen asks.
Eddie eyes the wires in her hands warily. "What are those for?"
Buck leans over and whispers to Eddie, "Still sure she's not going to kill us?"
Hen rolls her eyes and gestures to the couch. "Of course I'm not going to kill you. This is to help monitor your heart rhythm."
"What are you doing to us that you need to monitor our hearts?" Buck asks.
"An experiment," Hen says. "I can't tell you what exactly that is until after or else it could skew the results."
Eddie nods and moves to sit on the couch, leaving Buck no choice but to join him.
"Alright, shirts off," Hen says.
Buck and Eddie share a look and Eddie shrugs, stripping his shirt off in one swift movement. Buck has to make himself look away from the newly exposed expanse of skin, and takes his own shirt off.
"Now what?" Buck asks Hen.
"Now I need to put these electrodes on your chest," Hen says.
"I can do Buck," Eddie offers.
Buck almost chokes on his own tongue and he sputters. "What? What do…? What?"
"The electrodes, Buck," Eddie says. "I know where to place them."
"Right," Buck says. Of course that's what he'd been talking about. But then... "If you know what the wires are for why did you have to ask?"
Eddie smirks. "Because you didn't know."
"Asshole," Buck mutters.
All Eddie does is laugh.
Buck isn't sure if he wants to slap him or kiss him. Maybe both. Or neither. He's just going to be cool. He sits as still as he can as Eddie moves closer, one of the electrodes in his hands. He can do this. He can totally sit here and act like a normal person as his best friend, who he's secretly in love with, touches him. No big deal.
He jumps at the first touch of the sticky backing of the electrode in his skin. "Shit. That's cold."
Eddie sniggers. "Sorry. Did I forget to mention that?"
"Thought you would have known, Buckaroo," Hen says, easily placing the electrodes on Eddie's chest. He seems completely unphased. "You've been in the hospital enough times."
"I was never conscious when they put them on," Buck says. "Or you know, I had other things to worry about."
"Fair enough," Hen says.
Eddie sighs and shakes his head. "This will go faster if you sit still."
"Right," Buck mumbles. "Sorry."
He does his best to remain still as Eddie places the remaining electrodes on his chest. After the first two, it's a little easier since he knows what to expect. Once they’re all on, Eddie clips the wires onto each electrode, and Buck watches as his heart rhythm appears on one of the machines.
"Alright, so what next?" Buck asks.
"Now I just need you two to sit facing each other for three minutes and keep eye contact," Hen tells them. "I'll monitor the time and tell you when to start."
"That's all?" Buck questions.
Hen nods. "Yep."
Buck shrugs. "Okay. Sounds simple enough." He turns to face Eddie better and smiles as he holds out his hand. "You ready?"
Eddie rolls his eyes but returns the smile as he takes Buck's hand. It's not part of the experiment, but Eddie doesn't question it. "Ready."
"Excellent." Hen looks down at her phone and then nods her head. "Alright. Starting on three, two, one."
Buck didn't need the countdown. His eyes were already fixed on Eddie's. He's looked into them loads of times, often found his gaze lingering there. But never like this. Not with Eddie gazing back so intently, his palm warm against his. It's strangely intimate, even with the beeping of the machines, and Hen in the room watching them. All that falls away. All Buck can focus on is Eddie.
On the flecks of gold swimming among the brown, that until now Buck's never been able to appreciate. Buck could get lost in them. He wants to.
He leans in, his eyes not leaving Eddie's, needing to be closer. Eddie mirrors his movements. There’s a look in his eyes that never fails to take Buck’s breath away, even he can’t quite pinpoint what it is. He has a feeling if he looks long enough he’ll find all the answers he needs.
"Eds…"
Beep beep beep
Buck jolts back at the sound of the timer going off, but his eyes don't leave Eddie's, even now. Eddie doesn't seem ready to look away either.
"Well?" Buck asks. "What'd you find out?"
"That even science knows how in love you two idiots are," Hen says.
Buck does look away then. His hand drops from Eddie's as he turns to face Hen. "What?"
"Research shows that people who are in love and gaze into each other's eyes for three minutes naturally experience synchronized heartbeats," Hen says. "And you two," she points between Buck and Eddie. "Synced up perfectly. Eddie's heart rate was in the 80's when we started and yours was 78. The moment you two locked eyes both of your hearts started to slow and then stayed at 68. Your respirations matched up too."
Buck's sure his heart isn't slow now. In fact, it has to have shot up at Hen's words. He looks at the monitor to see he's right. He's pushing 80. But Eddie… Eddie's has remained steady.
He glances over at Eddie, to see him looking fondly at him before he starts to peel off the electrodes. "Can you get these off him, Hen?"
"You got it," Hen says. She starts removing the electrodes from Buck's skin, but Buck barely pays attention, too focused on Eddie.
"You don't seem surprised by this," Buck says. "Why aren't you surprised?"
Eddie sighs. "Because I'm not. I've heard of this before. And I…"
"What?"
"I think this is something you two need to talk about alone," Hen mutters. She tosses the last electrode aside and then stands up. "I'll get the equipment later. You two… talk."
Eddie starts to get to his feet, but Buck grabs his arm, stopping him. "Wait, Eddie."
"I'm just going to get a washcloth, Buck," Eddie says, offering him a reassuring smile. "Trust me, you don't want this to dry on your skin."
Buck winces. "Good point."
His skin already feels gross and sticky. Something he doesn't want to feel when he has this talk with Eddie.
Eddie returns a moment later with two washcloths. He hands one to Buck as he takes his previously vacated seat next to him. Buck smiles when he presses the washcloth against his skin and feels how warm it is. Of course, Eddie would be thinking about comfort.
When he's done, he puts the washcloth aside and turns back to Eddie.
"Why weren't you surprised?" Buck asks softly. Eddie looks up at him, before glancing away. Something Buck is used to when it comes to Eddie talking about his feelings. Normally, Buck would let it be. But not today. Not with this. Buck gently tilts his chin up with his fingers and ducks his head to meet Eddie's gaze. "Eddie."
"Because I know how I feel about you," Eddie says. "That's why my heart sped up when Hen told us what we'd be doing."
"But you were calm when it was over," Buck says.
Eddie nods. "Yeah. And you weren't."
"I was afraid I gave myself away," Buck admits. "I didn't want to risk losing you."
Eddie smiles and leans down, pressing a soft kiss on Buck's palm. "Buck, you know the experiment only works if it goes both ways."
"Oh," Buck says. Then, "Oh."
Eddie chuckles and moves down, kissing Buck's wrist over his pulse. "Yeah."
"You love me," Buck whispers. It’s a question. Buck is sure of that. As sure as he’s ever been of anything. Eddie loves him. Buck suddenly understands just what it was he saw in Eddie’s eyes before. Not just today, but so many times over the years, and he never let himself hope. Until now. It’s love.
Eddie sits up straighter until their faces are level. He brings his hand up to Buck's face, his fingers caressing his skin with a softness that matches the look in his eyes. There's no looking away now. "I do," Eddie says. "I love you, Evan."
Buck kisses him, unable to hold back in longer. Eddie laughs happily and kisses him back with matching enthusiasm. "I love you too," Buck murmurs against his lips. And it's perfect. Buck doesn’t need a heart monitor to tell him that. Together in this moment, like with everything else, they're completely in sync.

bad enough for you
find it on ao3
“Itʼs a good look on you.”
Itʼs Friday, lazy evening after a long, very tiring shift; theyʼre at Eddieʼs house sprawled on the couch, watching some movie played on TV. Itʼs nothing new, really. Lately, it has become kind of a tradition—because Buckʼs here almost everyday. Eddieʼs not complaining; in fact, heʼs the one who invites him to his house with a simple you coming with me? Buck agrees excitedly and they usually end up on the couch with Christopher, watching TV or playing games
—and his excitement to spend time with Buck is priceless to see.
This evening was no exception. The only thing thatʼs different is that Christopher is already asleep in his bed and theyʼre alone in the living room. Buck stepped out of the shower like ten minutes ago and he smells like Eddieʼs favourite body wash. His hair is quite disheveled and still a little wet which made them more curly than usual. Thereʼs a nice stubble on his cheeks because Buck hasnʼt shaved for two days and Eddie wonders how this stubble would feel between his thighs. His cheeks are burning at the thought. He tries to think about something else, something other than his best friend in different positions in various states of undress. Itʼs hard, though. Not like his dick when he wakes up in the morning, covered in sweat and frustrated because of the dream heʼs had but still. Itʼs hard because Buckʼs sitting next to him and the dim lights of the lamp standing in the corner make his skin glow. Heʼs in his sweatpants and Eddieʼs old shirt (he has his own in Eddieʼs house but he just likes that particular shirt) that is a little too tight for him but it doesnʼt bother either of them. It does wonders for the blonde because it highlights his broad chest, his biceps and now itʼs a little rolled out and exposes Buckʼs skin.
“What?” Buck asks sleepily and opens his eyes. Eddie realises he said those words out loud.
“Uh... I said itʼs a good look on you. Yʼknow, the curls and the stubble.” He replies sheepishly. He didnʼt want to lie and besides, itʼs completely normal to appreciate your friendʼs good look, right?
Buck runs his hand over his hair nervously but then smiles shyly.
“Thanks.”
Itʼs only one word but itʼs filled with so much joy, Eddieʼs glad he shared his thoughts with Buck.
Eddie wants to kiss him.
 Days later, Buck shows up at the station and Eddie almost drops his phone when he sees him. His friend is already in his workʼs clothes (this navy t-shirt really brings out Buckʼs eyes) but he looks different. His hair is extremely fluffy and very curly. He also has a nice scruff—a little more visible than the other night—and it suits him. And when he notices the Texan is staring at him, he winks.
“Eddie, youʼre drooling.” Chim laughs and he pretends heʼs wiping off the drool from Eddieʼs chin.
He should be embarrassed, horrified that Chim caught him checking Buck out. The thing is, heʼs not. He doesnʼt care if the rest of 118 noticed that too. Heʼs too happy, too giddy because apparently Buck likes this.
“Funny thatʼs coming out from your mouth.” Eddie teases. “Youʼre the one whoʼs drooling over another Buckley.”
“Hate to break it to you, Howie, but Eddieʼs right.” Buck laughs and goes to the kitchen to pour himself a cup of coffee.
“If youʼre looking for coffee, itʼs already waiting for you on the counter, red firefighter mug.” Eddie informs him.
“How domestic.” Chim mutters, rolling his eyes. Diaz pretends he didnʼt hear it but the tips of his ears turn red. Buck takes a sip and groans with pleasure because the coffee is exactly how he likes it. His friend knows him too well.
“Youʼre the best, Eds.” He says and sits right next to Eddie. Theyʼre so close their shoulders and legs are touching even though thereʼs still a lot of space on the couch.
“I know.” Eddie mutters. He enjoys their closeness, maybe even a little bit too much. He can smell Buck’s—wait, is that his favourite body wash? It definitely is. And from the smirk on Buck’s lips, it seems like his best friend knows what he’s thinking about.
He feels the heat is slowly taking over his whole body and suddenly, he’s more aware that he sits with Buck like they’re glued together. And they are in a way. It has always been like that. Personal space? Never heard of it. He just didn’t pay too much attention to it at first but over the years he discovered that Buck’s closeness, touch and smile have a huge effect on him. Sometimes it’s still hard to admit it and he tries to deny it but his traitorous body has a different opinion.
Jesus, he desperately needs to regain control over his own mind and not picture Buck sprawled on his couch again. Fire station is not the best place to fantasise about his best friend.
“Earth do Diiiiiiiaz!” Chim waves his hands right before Eddie’s face and Eddie immediately snaps out of his thoughts.
“You were saying?” He asks and takes another sip of his coffee.
“Actually it was me.” Hen answers; there’s a very knowing, smug smile dancing on her lips and Eddie suspects this woman really can read his mind. “I was asking if you’re free this Saturday, Denny wants to meet with Christopher and I thought it’s an amazing idea. They haven’t seen each other for a while.”
“Oh, it is a good idea. And we have nothing planned so we can definitely meet.” Eddie states and then turns to face his best friend. “Buck, you’re free too, right?”
Chim looks at him incredulously.
“What do you need him for?”
“Buck is Christopher and Denny’s favourite and they haven’t seen him in a while too so I figured they would be happy to see him.” Eddie shrugs nonchalantly.
“Wasn’t Buck like literally yesterday at your house? Because I swear I heard you inviting him over. And I definitely saw you two getting in Eddie’s car. Just like everyday.” Chim inquires, looking suspiciously at Eddie.
“Do you keep notes on how often I go to Eddie’s house?” Buck asks, clearly amused.
“No, but it’s hard not to notice that you basically live together. Albert claims he rarely sees you anymore. He told me that last time you didn’t even sleep in your own bed because he checked it and you didn’t come back!”
“I should’ve known that Albert would be just as nosy as you.” Buck mutters, shooting a very murderous glance at Chim.
“You and Hen have never heard of a sleepover? Never had one?” Eddie asks with a dose of sarcasm in his voice.
“Ha ha, very funny, Edmundo. We have sleepovers... Just not every night like you and Buck. Those kinds of sleepovers I have with Maddie.” Chim responses with a smirk.
“Oh, you donʼt want to know what we do during these sleepovers.” Buck blurts out. Both Chim and Hen freeze like they didnʼt expect this kind of response. Eddie stifles a laugh because they look hilarious with almost identical expressions on their faces. Heʼs glad Buck found a witty response to shut them up because this conversation was getting more ridiculous. And it was getting harder for him not to think about inappropriate things again.
“I think we broke them.” He gathers.
“Finally.”
Buck’s grinning at him, obviously very proud of himself. He’s usually the main topic of Chim and Hen’s jokes so when the tables turned, it must have been a nice feeling.
Eddie feels the urge to kiss him again and he has to physically restrain himself from doing it.
This is getting more ridiculous too. He needs to keep it together. Somehow. He has to.
“Whatʼs with the weird faces?” He hears Bobbyʼs voice who just came up the stairs and looks at his coworkers with curiosity.
“Oh, Hen and Chim just had a taste of their own medicine.” Eddie explains and points at Buck.
“Part of me wants to ask. The other part says knowing would be more disturbing than anything I could ever imagine. So I wonʼt ask for details.” Bobby says carefully.
 The whole shift is a nightmare. Oh, they donʼt have too many awful, difficult calls. Itʼs just a nightmare because Eddie is quite distracted.
“Wise choice, Bobby, wise choice.” Chim mutters and just shakes his head.
Itʼs all Buckʼs fault because Eddie canʼt keep his eyes off him (which is not that uncommon). Hen only rolls her eyes when she notices that he stares at his best friend again. Chim just pretends not to see this even though heʼs clearly curious and he opens his mouth from time to time as if he wants to ask but he decides not to.
It seems like Buck knows about Eddieʼs inner conflict and he does things  to torture him.
 He definitely loses his control when theyʼre back at the station and they change their clothes.
All of the touches, looks and smiles are nothing out of ordinary—they share it on a daily basis—but it still feels a little bit different. More intimate, more private. Itʼs just the way Buckʼs lips curl in a smile when he catches him staring and he subtly changes his position to be more seen, like he wants Eddie to have a full view. Itʼs the way Buck shoots him a quick look whenever their arms brush. Itʼs the way Buck bites his lip while looking directly at him. These are all small things, almost a details but Eddie pays attention to every one of it.
Eddie can’t help himself but glance at his best friend when he unbuttons his uniform. He’s seen him shirtless countless of times already but it’s not like he will be complaining about it.
“See something you like?” Buck asks teasingly, noticing that Eddie stares at him.  Again.
“Oh, for the love of—” Chim mutters under his breath and he definitely looks like he’s about to hit his head against the lockers but Hen pulls him away and whispers something in his ear. Then, they quickly make their way out of the changing room and Eddie’s all alone with Buck.
This is definitely not helping with his internal crisis. He doesnʼt trust himself and he feels like heʼs just one step away from dragging Buckley to a more private place where they could release the tension that has been building up between them for years.
Hell, he could easily just come closer, push him against the lockers and—
“Cap says you two can clean up the fire truck before dinner.” Donnellyʼs voice snaps him out of his thoughts quite harshly and he feels like he was just caught red-handed. He nods at his coworker and turns his head to see Buck.
“We should be quick, I heard Bobbyʼs doing carbonara today.” He says, trying to sound as normal as he can. He hopes that his friend wonʼt notice the blush on his cheeks thatʼs definitely here.
“Will you just kiss me or youʼre only gonna keep staring at me?” He asks, his voice teasing and amused.
“Please, when were we not quick?” Buck asks with a smile. “Letʼs just get to work.”
 Cleaning up the fire truck goes quite smoothly. Buckʼs right; they are a very good team and they always work very well, no matter if itʼs a rescue or doing more mundane things. They work in silence, solely focused on finishing the cleaning soon. Eddie really tries to keep his mind off Buck and things he wants to do with him but he fails. He glances at him discreetly—or at least he thinks itʼs discreet but after a while, Buck stops working, leans against the car and turns to face him. Thereʼs a very mischievous smile on his lips and a spark in his eyes.
“I—” Eddie wets his lips and looks at Buck. The question catches him off guard and for a while he does nothing. Buck just waits patiently, still smiling like he knows Eddie wonʼt back out.
And Eddie doesnʼt.
He takes a step closer until Buck is pinned against the fire truck completely and crashes their lips together. Itʼs definitely better than all of his fantasies. Buck tastes like cinnamon gum and his lips are incredibly soft, softer than heʼd ever imagined. He can feel Buckʼs hands on his belt, tugging him closer. Eddie gasps when Buck rolls his hips and they can both feel how turned on they are.
“Jesus, Buck.” He says, voice all hoarse when they break apart to catch a breath. Buck doesnʼt give him time to think because he already starts to kiss his neck. His stubble scratches a little but itʼs not a bad feeling. In fact, he even enjoys it and closes his eyes, letting Buck do whatever he wants to.
“You know, I kept thinking...” He tries to say but itʼs very hard to focus and not to moan loudly when Buck moves with his kisses near his earlobe. “I really wanted to know how your stubble would feel.”
His best friend stops and raises an eyebrow.
“Oh, really? Good thing I didnʼt shave then.” He grins and thereʼs something in the tone of his voice that Eddie picks up immediately.
“You planned this, didnʼt you? You were fucking with me today on purpose?” He asks with disbelief.
“Hey, the fucking part is still ahead of us.” Buck corrects him, still grinning. “But yes, I was flirting with you and I did keep the look because I figured youʼre really into it. I just wanted to push you a little and convince myself that I didnʼt make up all of this.” He says, pointing out their swollen lips, flushed cheeks and their bodies tangled up together.
“You know how hard it was for me to keep my hands off you and not to drag you to the nearest bathroom or closet and do all the things I had in my mind just because you were all cute and flirty? Youʼre a menace, Buckley, you know that?” Eddie says. He still cannot quite believe that he was just making out with his best friend, that it wasnʼt just a dream. But he wants to repeat it, though.
“You and I both know you like it anyway. Just FYI, you can drag me whenever you want and do whatever you want, Iʼm very much interested.”
“Good.” Eddie comes closer again and before he kisses him again, he adds. “Because Iʼll definitely do it.”
They kiss again for God knows how long; itʼs like once theyʼve done it, they just canʼt stop. Eddie feels like heʼs a teenager again, all giddy and excited and definitely horny but he doesnʼt mind it. Kissing Buck definitely lands on top of the list of his favourite things to do and he suspects he will add a few more very soon. Heʼd do it even now but he still remembers—somehow—that theyʼre at work and they need to wait just a little longer. He does not remember that theyʼre not alone in the station, though, and Chimʼs voice definitely surprises him.
“Guys, where are you? If you donʼt hurry up—Oh my god.”
Chim sounds almost horrified and both Buck and Eddie look in his direction. He covered his mouth with his hand and his eyes widened when he realised what he walked into.
“Sorry, Chim, weʼll be done in a minute.” Eddie promises. He doesnʼt even care that Chim caught them kissing and neither does Buck.
“I really wanted you two to finally resolve this sexual tension but I definitely didnʼt want to witness that.” Chim scowls. “Now I need something to erase this image from my mind.”
“Consider it a repay for all your never-ending teasing.” Buck says smugly. “Just be glad it was only kissing.”
“Ew, Buckley. Next time Iʼll send Hen, I canʼt be the only one traumatised by the two of you.”
“Youʼre suspiciously sure there will be a next time.” Eddie notices.
“Weʼve seen you dancing around each other for three years, three years of pent up sexual tension doesnʼt disappear suddenly after one making out session. I doubt youʼll be able to keep hands off each other for a long time. Do what you want to but please, give man a warning first.”
“I think we can do that.”

Weirdly the first Buddie vibe I got was when Eddie said he had a kid and Buck did that goofy "I LOVE kids" line. Like...who cares that you love kids, Buck? It's not like he's asking you to live with him! 😂
Buck was so impressed with Eddie after he got over his initial jealousy. I'm convinced Eddie has been his bisexual awakening. He played off that "boy crush" comment from Maddie but inside, I'd like to think that Buck was secretly wondering why he couldn't stop talking/thinking about Eddie (while also slowly acknowledging that Eddie wasn't the first time he'd felt that way about a guy). While Buck is very open about a lot of things, I think that because he has always had that voice saying he wasn't good enough, being attracted to men would freak him out a little. So, as long as he was also attracted to women, he might ignore that attraction to men or put off thinking about it or chalk it up to really strong hero worship.
Under the cut is how I would go about outing both Buck and Eddie as bisexual in the same episode
Anyway, Buck has this far assumed that Eddie could never be anything but straight so his crush on him (like all of his other crushes on guys throughout his life) can remain irrelevant until it fades. But then the topic somehow comes up early in s5 while the whole 118 is in the firehouse and Eddie just...admits to everyone that he's bisexual. He's known since high school but where (and when) he grew up, there weren't any actual gay couples to emulate. And all the high school guys he messed around with were closeted and wanted to stay that way. It was easier then (and after taking custody of Chris) to date women.
Buck is shocked af because...well, he doesn't know why. It just never would have occurred to him that Eddie was anything but straight. However, because Eddie is so open about it, during that same discussion with the 118, Buck maybe asks some things that suggest he's questioning. Eddie is surprised, and Hen gives Buck some answers while Eddie is still stunned. Before Eddie can recover and say something, they're called out to a fire/emergency.
Then, towards the end of the episode, Eddie and Buck are together by the lockers (lmao, and there's your Glee reference in this meta) and they have a...conversation that is charged with longing from each side but where nothing concrete is said in regards to possible crushes. Eddie gives the advice he was too shocked to give earlier. Buck reacts in his usual straightforward fashion. But they're more hesitant around each other than they typically are and you can see them kind of feeling each other out. It ends with Buck saying that even though he doesn't plan on dating any dudes right away because of Taylor, it's nice to know this thing about himself. And Eddie says "Know? I thought you were just questioning" And Buck just kind of smiles and shrugs, then leaves. He has a date with Taylor.
And it's finally at that date with Taylor that he admits that he thinks he might be bi - is that a problem? Taylor says no and means it genuinely - as long as this doesn't mean he's going to start sleeping with guys while he's with her (it's a joke but not really because the widening crack in their relationship is that they don't trust each other and, at best, trust the other one to be untrustworthy - Buck because Taylor is loyal to her ambitions and Taylor because Buck is loyal to the 118). They have a laugh at the idea of Buck cheating, and then once they've recovered, you can see Buck is lighter and happier because of his admission. But then Taylor asks him what brought this revelation about and Buck looks thoughtful. We don't get an answer but instead cut to the next scene which is Eddie getting Christopher ready for bed. I'd include a brief scene where Eddie either came out to Christopher or where you could infer from the bedtime story he was going to tell him that he was about to come out.
And that's it. In a following episode, I'd have Eddie interact with Michael and his husband, maybe take Christopher for a play date with Harry. At that point, I might have Eddie confide in Michael about Buck (or at least hint that there's someone he's interested in). But since so much of the series has been devoted to Buck growing up, I like the idea of him going from questioning to bi over the course of an episode. I like Eddie playing a role in it. And I like Eddie having accepted his sexuality but not being super open about it for reasons that have more to do with his current situation than with shame or guilt (shows never approach homophobia in minority communities with any nuance and I doubt 911 would be an exception, so I would almost rather they not talk about any homophobia Eddie has faced in that context).

And part 2.  Part 1 is here.  Also on ao3. See, I said you could trust me.
Eddie feels like an asshole.
He hates fighting with Buck, inevitably regrets everything he says when tensions are running high—and they had been. He’d been blindsided the night before when Christopher had stopped him before bed and asked dad, are you dating someone? He’d been avoiding that conversation, hadn’t been ready to have it, hadn’t even known how to start it. And even though he stumbled through it successfully enough, he was still—
He hadn’t slept well, spending the night staring up at the ceiling stewing, uncomfortable and upset for reasons he didn’t even really understand. It was just—what the fuck?  Buck can go out with whoever he wants, including apparently Taylor Kelly, and that doesn’t warrant a conversation about what that means for his own relationship with Christopher, but he felt the need to put himself in charge of talking to Chris about what Eddie dating means?
Eddie’s not going anywhere, he’s the parent. Buck’s the one who doesn’t have to stick around, the one who can walk away whenever he wants to, who can fall in love with whoever he wants and leave—
It’s not fair. And on some level he knows that. But—what was it Buck said after everything with his parents and Maddie? That it’s easier to lash out at the people you know will forgive you?
...yeah, it’s easier to fight with Buck than look too hard at why exactly he’s so upset at the idea of Buck not always being there.
But after the shift, he doesn’t feel any better. He just feels like hell. And as he sits in his truck thinking more about why he hadn’t wanted to tell Christopher in the first place, he pulls out his phone and makes a call.
It’s easy. Simple. There’s no yelling, no drama.
He tells Ana she’s a wonderful woman—which is true—but that he’s just not in the best place to be dating—which is mostly true—and she says she completely understands and wishes him well, and that’s the end of it.
It ends and he’s not sad—it barely even registers—which really says about all there is to say. And Eddie goes home and thinks about how the hell he’s going to fix things with Buck.
He still doesn’t have a clear plan the next morning, but he figures starting with coffee can’t hurt. He knocks on Buck’s door just before eight—he has a key, but with everything...well it’s easier to knock.
Buck opens the door looking rough, unshaven with dark circles under his eyes, and stops.
“Hey.”
Eddie swallows hard and holds out the coffee cup like a peace offering.
“I broke up with Ana,” he says, and Buck takes the coffee, stepping aside to let Eddie in.
Although, that doesn’t stop him from asking—
“Before or after you bit my head off yesterday?”
Eddie winces. “After. Last night.”
“I’m sorry,” he adds after a beat.  He and Shannon never said that much, more often than not fell into the don’t apologize, just sleep it off school of fighting, which rarely fixed anything, just let things get pushed down to fester until some future barb cut deep enough to uncover them again.  But he wants to say it.  He needs to say it.  So, he does.
Buck looks down at the coffee cup, takes a sip in the silence—then he shakes his head.
“You didn’t say anything that wasn’t true.”  His voice is hollow, accepting, and Eddie hates it.  Because he doesn’t want to be right, he doesn’t care about technicalities, about accuracy.  There have been times when he’s needed to play the I’m his parent card—usually when he needs his parents to back the hell off—but it’s not something he likes to do.  It’s not something he’s ever enjoyed doing.
Especially not with Buck.
“Maybe, but—I still shouldn’t have said it like that. So. I’m sorry.”
Buck looks at him for a moment.  “I’m sorry, too,” he says finally.  “Whether he knew or not, you’re right that how he feels about you dating—that’s something for the two of you to discuss and it wasn’t my place to bring it up.  I overstepped.”
“I want him to be able to talk to you,” Eddie replies.  “I know that there may be things that come up sometimes that he won’t want to talk to me about and I want him to be able to talk to someone he trusts if I’m not it, I just also don’t want you to feel—”
His tongue ties itself in knots as he looks away, searching for the right words, but they’re all a mess in his head and his throat, a tangled snarl of thoughts—I’m afraid that I’ve been leaning on you too much feeds into I don’t want to lose you which twines through I don’t know what I’m doing—all too much to spit out.
Buck has a strange look on his face when Eddie looks back.
“Obligated?”  Buck fills in, and his tone is unreadable.
Eddie shrugs.  “I’ve been doing this alone for a long time,” he says.  And I’m tired, he thinks.
The strange look doesn’t go away—Buck’s brow furrows like he’s trying to figure out a complicated puzzle.
“You know you can trust me to stick around though...don’t you?”
“I—”  It’s dangerous, the highwire he’s walking on, the thin line between I want and I shouldn’t, the whisper reminding him that he never gets to keep the things he wants.
“Eddie?”  Buck prompts.
“I don’t expect your next serious girlfriend to be super comfortable with you helping to parent someone else’s kid, no,” Eddie admits, and waits for the other shoe to drop.
But it doesn’t.
“You’re an idiot,” Buck says.  And Eddie blinks.
“What?”
“I said you’re an idiot,” he repeats.  “If you think I wouldn’t pick Christopher over some random hypothetical woman—and they are all only hypothetical right now—if you think I would get serious with someone who refused to understand that you’re in my life, that he’s in my life—I—you’re an idiot.  Why wouldn’t I put him first?”
“His own mother didn’t.”
“Yeah, well—I’m not Shannon,”  Buck’s voice is steady, and his eyes soften as he adds— “You let me into his life.  You let me be part of your family—you’re my best friend and I know I’m not his dad, but I’m not just going to walk away from that.  I love—”
Eddie’s breath catches.  Buck cuts off and looks away, clearing his throat.
“—Christopher,” Buck finishes.
Eddie’s pulse is racing, blood rushes in his ears, and he tries to breathe and put his world right, return it to the balance that existed before he thought Buck was about to say—
It was a stupid thought anyway.  He has no reason to think it, but he can’t stop wondering—
“Why did you break up with Ana?” Buck asks.  The question cuts through Eddie’s reverie and his throat closes for a moment.  Because he’s been turning that question over in his head for hours and while the answer is simple, it also feels...messy.  Especially in this moment.  Like it leads down a path he’s afraid to examine too closely, a slippery slope that goes...he’s not sure where.  But he owes Buck honesty, so he swallows hard and admits—
“I realized I didn’t want her to meet Christopher as my girlfriend. And I didn’t think I ever would.”
Another odd look flickers across Buck’s face.
“She seemed kind of perfect for you,” Buck says.  “Pretty and smart and stable—”
“Yeah,” Eddie agrees.  “But she wasn’t what I wanted.”
“So...what do you want?”
A single word whispers through his mind, catches in his throat.  And maybe he is an idiot, because he can be brave when it comes to any number of other things—running into burning buildings or downed helicopters, scaling walls and talking down impersonators who steal firetrucks—and yet, when it comes to this—
“I—”
Buck sets the coffee down and takes a step forward, then another, closing the distance until he’s close enough to touch, until Eddie can feel the heat of him.
“What do you want?”  Buck repeats quietly, his gaze searching, and Eddie still can’t manage to make the words come.  But something flickers in Buck’s eyes before they settle on resolve and he nods.
“Okay.”
“Okay?”
Buck laughs and Eddie doesn’t have a chance to ask why before he’s being kissed.
Oh.
And words may be difficult, but that he can do.
“For the record,” Buck says when he pulls back.  “I don’t want to date anyone but you.”
“Well, that’s convenient,” Eddie replies, and pulls him down to kiss him again.
When they tell Christopher, they tell him together.

love is not designed for the cynical
The new recruit, Buck, is a mystery to Hen and the rest of the team. So what happens when they find out he’s a father? Well, they find out he’s married, too.
army!eddie + firefighter!buck secret marriage au
Hen hasn’t known Buck for long, but she likes to think she at least understands him. Somewhat.
What she doesn’t understand is what he just told her.
“You lived in Texas?”
“Yeah, I mean that’s where we were before LA,” Buck answers innocently enough.
We?
“Why Texas?” Hen asks and Buck looks at her funny.
“It’s where we went after I left the Navy. To catch our bearings.”
Who’s this ‘we’? Wait.
“Navy?” Hen looks at Buck like he has six heads. “You were in the Navy?”
“Huh? Oh yeah, SEALs. About eight years.”
“You were a Navy SEAL?” Hen asks again, slowly this time, because she can’t be hearing this right. Buck’s like a golden retriever.
“Yeah. You okay, Hen?” Buck chuckles and pats her shoulder as he walks away to head upstairs to the loft.
“He just said that right?” Hen asks Chimney as he walks up next to her.
“Yep.”
It doesn’t fit, it doesn’t.
Until it does, two weeks later, when Buck does a rope rescue they definitely didn’t learn at the academy.
~~~
Hen likes to think she’s intelligent. Hell, she knows she is. But something about Buck still evades her and she wants to know what it is.
“Hey, Buck. We were gonna go get drinks after shift, do you want to join us?” She nudges Chimney and he nods enthusiastically.
“Oh, I would, but I can’t after work. Maybe we can schedule something else?” Buck asks hopefully and Hen nods.
“Sure, I’ll see if we can get a sitter for Denny and I’ll bring Karen.”
“Great! I can’t wait to meet her.” Buck bounds down the stairs and Hen turns to Chimney from where he’s shoveling food into his mouth.
“That was weird right?”
“Maybe he doesn’t drink.” Chimney shrugs but Hen doesn’t think that’s it.
“He would’ve said that. Bobby’s already told him he’s sober so wouldn’t Buck have said ‘oh hey, me too’?”
“Maybe. What’s your deal with him?”
“Nothing. We just don’t know much about him,” Hen says after a moment.
“Hey. We know he’s great at his job, if a little reckless, the rest will come with time.” Chimney pats her shoulder.
“You aren’t curious?”
“Oh, I am. But you’re doing enough snooping for the both of us.”
Hen resents that, because she’s not snooping. She’s not.
But she is curious.
~~~
Luckily, for her, she doesn’t have to ask Buck about his family, because it shows up one day in the form of a cute little boy with curly blonde hair.
“Papa!” A young voice shouts and they all turn toward the bay door where they see the young boy walk in on crutches, followed by a woman who’s smiling at him, who looks vaguely familiar.
“Christopher!” Buck shouts as he runs towards the boy and lifts him up in a huge hug. “What are you doing here?”
“Aunt Maddie said we could come surprise you cause I got an ‘A’ on my test!”
“You did? Good job, Superman.”
“She also said we could get ice cream,” The boy, Christopher, stage whispers. Buck laughs and then mock glares at the woman, Maddie.
“She did? Well you still have to eat your dinner tonight.”
“I will, Papa.”
At that Buck smiles and sets Christopher down as he turns towards everyone. He smiles a little sheepishly and then introduces them.
“This is my son Christopher and my sister Maddie.”
“Hi,” Hen shakes Maddie’s hand and then smiles at Christopher. “Hi, Christopher. I’m Hen.”
“I know! My Papa talks about everyone here.”
“You’re adorable. I’m gonna have to see baby photos of you Buckaroo because I don’t believe it,” Hen teases.
Buck laughs as his cheeks turn red and then Chris and Maddie are walking away with Bobby as Chimney stares after Maddie.
“Quit it,” Hen elbows him and Chimney just shrugs.
“What?”
“Did you know he was a dad?” Hen asks and Chimney shakes his head. Hen looks on as Christopher tells Buck about his day and she smiles. “It looks good on him.”
~~~
Hen has never seen Buck so jittery, and that’s saying something. Ever since he found out the address of the accident, he’s been quiet, checking his phone constantly, and worrying his lip between his teeth.
The truck has barely pulled to a stop before Buck is running out.
“Shannon!”
A woman, Shannon, steps out of the house and into Buck’s arms.
“Buck! It’s my mom, she fell, and…”
“Hey, hey. It’s alright, we’ll take care of her.” Buck calms Shannon down and then she nods and heads into the house with the rest of them following.
“Janet? It’s Buck,” Buck crouches down next to the woman on the ground, who, while in pain, looks at him and smiles.
Chimney and Hen load Janet into the ambulance and Shannon goes to grab her car.
“Christopher,” Shannon says quietly.
“I’ll tell Maddie. Call me once you know what’s going on. I can bring him if you need me to.”
“Thank you.”
“‘Course.” Buck smiles and Shannon kisses his cheek as she drives away after the ambulance.
“Friend of yours?” Hen asks as they put their things away.
“Yeah. She’s Christopher’s mom.”
“Oh. Oh. Really?”
“Yep,” Buck laughs. “She moved here to take care of her mom and we followed.”
“That’s good you two stayed friends,” Hen comments.
“Oh, no we’re - ”
“Invite her to the barbeque next month. If everything’s okay with her mom. Family’s family.” Bobby pats Buck on the shoulder and Buck smiles.
“Sure, Cap. She’d like that.”
~~~
Hen loves their monthly get togethers. It’s rare that they all have a Saturday off, so when it happens they get together as a group. Denny loves getting to see Harry and now Christopher so she can’t complain.
Buck arrives with Christopher, Maddie, and Shannon. Maddie makes a beeline for Chimney and Hen secretly hopes they work out.
“Hen!” Buck comes up and hugs her and she smiles. “This is Shannon, Christopher’s mom.”
“Hi,” Hen shakes her hand. “Sorry we didn’t get a chance...”
“No, thank you for all you did for my mom.”
That seems to be all Buck needs because he bounds away to where the kids are playing.
Hen chuckles. “Has he always been like that?”
“A big kid himself? Yeah.”
“It’s great that you two are such good friends. My ex and I – ”
“Oh, no. We’re not…”
“Momma! Aunt Maddie’s here!” Christopher yells and Shannon smiles apologetically and goes to hug Maddie.
“It’s nice they’re all so friendly,” Karen says as she sneaks up behind her.
“It is,” Hen responds as she kisses Karen.
She can’t help but wonder if she’s missing something though. That’s the second time one of them has started to correct her.
“Will they be at the cookout?” Karen asks after a moment of watching Denny and Christopher whispering with their heads together.
“If Buck hasn’t said anything yet, I will.”
~~~
The one eighteen’s annual summer cookout brings the entire station together, the shifts lining up so the B and C shifts catch the beginning and the end.
They sell hamburgers and hotdogs, the kids have a lemonade stand going, along with some activities for families. It’s a way to bring their families and the community together and Hen loves it.
She’s busy helping the kids with the lemonade stand when Buck comes over, smiling, absolutely in his element.
“Hen!” Buck crows. “Want me to take over? I think I saw Denny by the face paint.”
“You know what? That would be great, thanks.”
Hen’s just about to step around the stand when they both pause at Christopher’s shout.
“Daddy!”
Buck whips his head around so fast Hen is afraid he’s going to get whiplash.
Christopher walks over to a man, who bends down and scoops him up, hugging him tightly. That’s when Hen notices the Army fatigues he’s wearing and duffle bag that he dropped on the ground.
Hen looks at Buck and notices he has tears in his eyes. He turns to Maddie and Shannon who are both filming this, with hands over their mouths, and the same tears in their eyes.
“Did you two know about this?” Buck asks them incredulously.
Shannon and Maddie both shrug but they have a twinkle in their eyes that makes Hen laugh.
Before Buck can say anything else, Christopher calls for him.
“Papa!” Christopher waves at him and it breaks Buck out of his stupor. He strides over quickly and engulfs both of them in a hug.
Hen can hear the whispered ‘Eddie’ and then Buck is kissing the man, Eddie, and Hen knows. This is Buck’s partner, not Shannon, and it wasn’t long distance so much as Eddie was deployed.
After they break apart everyone claps and Buck smiles sheepishly at everyone. Christopher stays close to them as Buck brings Eddie around and introduces him to everyone.
“So...this is what you were trying to say at Bobby’s?” Hen asks Shannon after she stops filming and walks over to the lemonade stand.
“Yeah. Eddie and I had Christopher young, and we were not meant to be married. We got divorced pretty soon after he was born and then Eddie left for his first tour. He came home with Buck and they’ve been together ever since.”
“Wow, that’s…”
“Impressive? Yeah, Eddie’s stubborn.”
Hen can’t help it, she laughs, loudly. “Yeah, well Buck is like a golden retriever, I’m sure he just wore him down.”
“That’s exactly what happened,” Eddie says as he comes up to them. He smiles at Hen and then he hugs Shannon.
Hen raises an eyebrow at Buck. “So, you’re married?”
“Yes,” Buck squeaks and Hen chuckles.
“I’m happy for you.”
“Thank you, Hen,” Buck breathes out. “Eddie, come meet Hen.”
“Hen, this is my husband, Eddie.”
“It’s nice to meet you,” Hen shakes his hand and Eddie responds in kind.
“I hear you’d like baby pictures of Evan,” Eddie says cheekily while Buck squawks and Shannon laughs.
“Oh, I think we’re going to be fast friends.”
Just Friends
Evan Buckley x Eddie Diaz
Warnings: mentions of disagreements and one kiss
Category: fluff/angst
Word Count: 1.9k
Author’s Note: this is part one of my buddie fic :) part 2 will be coming sometime soon. I have the idea, I just need to write it. Also, absolutely no disrespect to Ana, like at all. I love her but I just wrote it this way.
Part 2: Soulmates In This Life & Another
------
The day was quiet but of course no one used the ‘Q word’. They were on hour 16 of a 24 hour shift. The time was 3:56am and only Chimney and Buck were awake. Chim was dozing off on the couch when Buck nudged him to go to bed.
“Man, I'm not tired. I don't know why you think-” his sentence was cut short by a yawn. Buck gave him a pointed look, “still not tired ?” he asked him, his hand resting on his friend’s shoulder as they walked towards the bunks.
Chimney stepped in first, he made himself comfortable on the bed beside Eddie, Buck who followed Chimney in, took a seat on the end of Eddie’s bed. Buck glanced over his shoulder at the sleeping man, a smile on his face. Eddie looked at ease, there was no frown on his face or furrowed brows that were starting to cause little wrinkles on his forehead- he looked relaxed. By the time Buck returned his attention to his sister’s boyfriend, he was fast asleep. Buck let out a little chuckle.
A hand on his shoulder startled him, behind him stood Hen. She gave him a small smile, “I'm gonna make some tea, are you going to bed?” she whispers not wanting to wake any of her sleeping teammates. Buck shook his head, “I'll come with you”
The pair walked to the kitchen, Buck made himself comfortable on one of the stools by the counter while Hen filled the kettle with water. “Eddie seemed a bit on edge earlier, is everything okay with him ?” She stood across from him, Buck’s brows furrowed - he was developing the same little wrinkles Eddie was.
“Yeah, he had promised Chris that he was going to go with him to Abuela’s yesterday but he forgot he had work so Chris was a little bit upset” Buck replied. Hen studied Buck as he spoke, he didn’t hesitate to tell her what was wrong- that was because he trusted him but he instantly knew what's bothering Eddie because Eddie had confided in Buck.
If it were anyone else, Buck would have had to stop and think why they were upset.
If Buck wasn't Buck, Eddie wouldn't have told him what was wrong.
This wasn’t the first time she noticed this either- wherever Buck and Eddie were concerned, you'd go to the other to find out what was wrong. If Eddie was upset, you turned to Buck and if Buck was upset you’d turn to Eddie.
The most recent display she witnessed was when Buck’s parents came to town. They are about to have dinner and Buck hadn’t showed up yet which was strange, considering that he was always first at the table. Bobby asked for Buck and Eddie seemed to be the only one with an answer as to where and what he was doing. Eddie also had gone so far as to give a piece of his mind to the Buckleys while they were at the station about what an amazing man Buck was.
“Buck ?”
“Hen?”
“What’s really going on with you and Eddie ?”
“What do you mean ?” he head cocks to the side. Hen let out a chuckle, of course he was oblivious, he always was. A look of confusion displayed on his face, Hen shook her head and let out a sigh.
“Let me ask you something” She paused for a moment, looking over at her friend, his blue eyes staring back at her brown ones.
“Do you think Eddie loves Ana?”
Hen’s question caught him off guard, he thought it was obvious that he loved her but he paused, thinking about his best friend and his new girlfriend. Sure, they had known each other for a while before when she was Christopher’s teacher but how much can you get to know a person when they’re your kid’s teacher ? They started a relationship rather quickly but Eddie seemed happy and who was he to interfere with his happiness. Nonetheless, he glances back at Hen, “yes, he does. Why are you asking?”
“Okay one more question, you ready?” he hums when she asks.
“Are you an idiot ?”
“What ?” the offence visible on his face, “why would you ask me that ?” he rebutted. Hen laughed, “it was more of a statement to tell you the truth.”
“I’m not an idiot” Buck pouted watching Hen move around the kitchen. She hummed, her back turned to him as he reached for the tea and the mugs. He thought about her first question - what’s really going on with you and Eddie ?
Nothing was going on, they were just friends. They had always been friends. I mean, yeah they didn’t get along when he first arrived by the end of the shift, they were attached at the hip. Buck’s phone chimed, he swiped away the notification to see a picture of him, Christoper and Eddie from a day at the zoo, he had sent it as his wallpaper a while back. His heart skipping a beat at the smile on Eddie’s face in the photo
Nothing was going on, they were just friends.
----
A weekend of rest would do a person a lot of good, unless that person was Eddie Diaz. He entered the station looking worse than he did when he left. His displeasure was no secret as he wore it openly on his face and Buck was the first to notice. Hen followed Buck’s gaze to the man in the locker room and Chimney followed hers. Bobby shouted from the kitchen that breakfast was ready, Hen gave Buck’s shoulder a squeeze as she passed by, her and chimney leaving him by the truck watching Eddie.
Her touch made Buck think back to their conversation a few nights ago.
“What’s really going between you and Eddie ?” her words replayed in his head over and over again, the entire weekend he spent thinking on and off about every single thing that happened between the two of them. Pushing the thoughts aside, he approached the locker room. Buck’s hand knocking on the wall, getting Eddie’s attention.
“Hey, everything okay ?” Buck asked softly, stepping further into the room. He took a seat on the bench in front of Eddie. Eddie was mid changing, his bare back facing Buck as he tumbled through his locker for a shirt. Buck’s eyes raked over Eddie’s skin, soft and tan- a few freckles along his back as his eyes moved lower. Eddie pulled the shirt over his head, Buck’s eyes snapping back up towards his friend’s face.
“Yeah,” the man sighs, “I’m fine.”
“If you’re going to lie to me at least be better at it” scoffing before patting the seat beside him. Eddie turned to Buck when he sat. “What’s really going on?” The blonde man questioned and Eddie paused, taking in his best friend. His blue eyes staring thoughtfully at him. Eddie had always had a liking for Buck’s eyes, they were so beautiful and if he could stare into them forever, he would. His eyes trailed down to  Buck’s lips- pink, soft, full, perfect.
Oh if he could kiss him right now.
“Eds?” Buck’s voice pulled him from his thoughts.
“Hm?”
“What’s going on?” he asked once again, Eddie let out another sigh.
“It’s Ana, man. We got into a fight when I got home on Saturday.”
“About?”
Eddie didn’t mind that Buck pried. If it were anyone else, he’d probably storm out and brood for the rest of the day because someone was poking around in his business but because it was Buck- he didn’t say anything. Buck always listened, didn’t matter what he had to say, he listened.
“She wants me to meet her parents. I told her it was too early to meet them but then she brought up the fact that she’s met abuela and I kind of let it slip that it wasn't intentional that she met her.”
Buck’s heart skipped a beat, something about Eddie saying it wasn’t intentional that Ana met Abuela made him feel a glimmer of hope. Surely if Eddie didn’t want them to meet, it couldn't be serious. “You didn’t want her to meet abuela?”
“I did, but not so soon, you know?” he groaned. Buck’s hand reached for Eddie instinctively, giving it a small squeeze. Buck leaned towards the man sitting in front of him, Eddie had a hold on Buck - something had him gravitating towards him. He wanted to comfort his friend so badly, he hated seeing him sad.
Something urged him to move his hand up to Eddie’s face. His hand seemed so pale in comparison to Eddie’s tan skin. Eddie watched as Buck shifted towards him, his hand on his face. He’d be lying if he said he didn’t like the way it felt. Buck’s hand was much bigger than Ana’s - it held his face just the way he liked- the way he had imagined.
He froze in place as he watched Buck lean towards him, their lips inches away from each other. Eddie’s heart felt like it was beating out of his chest- beating so loudly that everyone in the station could hear it.
Buck’s lips met his and Eddie’s heart decided to skip a beat, the smell of him intoxicating beyond reason. Butterflies fluttered in his stomach and it would a lie to say he hadn’t thought of this exact moment a thousand times over. The warmth Buck radiated was the only thing that filled Eddie’s head, his hands reaching forward to pull Buck closer to him. Just as he did, the alarm blared causing the two of them to abruptly end their kiss.
Lips swollen and faces red, the pair smile at each other. Buck walks out first going to get his turnout gear. Eddie replays what just happened in his head again, fingers coming up to touch his lips- the same place Buck’s lips were only a moment ago. He stepped out and got his gear as well. They all loaded onto the truck, the drive was quiet except for Bobby giving them instructions.
“Hey man, how was your weekend ?” Chim breaks the silence.
Eddie's chest drops as does the smile from his face.
He had forgotten all about Ana during the brief time he spent with Buck. Everyone noticed the drop in conversation, all eyes in the truck burning into Eddie, waiting for his answer. Buck noticed the change in expression, he went from being happy to a state of worry.
“It was fine.” The three words would be the beginning of the downfall of their friendship in the upcoming weeks.
Darling, feel better love
A Buddie 9-1-1 Fanfic
Summary: Eddie catches himself before he can say something he’ll regret, and sighs. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to snap. You just worried us. You worried me.”
“Come on, it’s not that bad,” Buck says, obviously trying to lighten the mood. “The doctor said all my bleeding was internal. That’s where all the blood is supposed to be.”
-
Or, Buck gets injured (again) and it forces Eddie to confront his feelings for Buck.
*
Eddie absolutely hates hospital waiting rooms.
More specifically, he hates how useless they make him feel. There’s nothing to do but patiently, and anxiously, wait for further news on Buck’s condition after his latest accident.
Buck’s doctor had been out about an hour earlier. He’d reassured them all Buck was stable, and while it would take time, he would in fact recover. It was a massive relief, but still, Eddie couldn’t quell the need to see Buck and assess his injuries for himself.
It’s the seventh time Buck has been in hospital in just under three years. And that’s just in the time Eddie’s known him. Based on the stories he’s heard from Bobby and Maddie, he’s always been disaster prone.
This latest injury had happened while they were on call to a building fire. In typical Buck fashion, he’d disobeyed a direct order to evacuate, deciding instead to do one last sweep of the floor he was on.
That, of course, was when the floor collapsed beneath him.
They’d barely had time to pull Buck out, battered and broken, before the rest of the building collapsed.
Eddie’s not too much of a man to admit that the whole situation had scared the shit out of him. As soon as he’d realised that Buck had not followed him out, cold dread seized him. It was only compounded by the dead silence when Eddie tried to raise him on the radio.
While it had only taken them a few minutes to find Buck and pull him out, for Eddie it had felt like hours. When Buck emerged lifeless and unnaturally still, it was like Eddie's heart had stopped, and only started again when Hen had said there was still a pulse.
Although, if Eddie’s being honest, the accident itself didn’t really surprise him. Buck has a habit of being a self-sacrificing idiot, with no regard for himself or his own safety. But if Buck keeps on this road, keeps doing things like this, there’s a real chance that it’ll kill him.
And Eddie isn’t sure how he’d survive that.
He’d grown used to being alone, given that for so long it’d been just him and Christopher. But then came Buck, who’d somehow managed to worm his way into their lives and carve out a space in his heart since pretty much day one.
Eddie isn’t sure at what point he fell in love with Buck, but in hindsight it’s painfully obvious.
And it tears him up, that Buck almost died, and he’s never told him how he feels. Because Buck deserves to know. Buck deserves to have someone brave enough to tell him.
Most of all, Buck deserves to have someone he wants back.
Because honestly, Eddie is pretty sure that Buck doesn’t feel the same way he does. After all, Buck gives 100% to everyone he cares about, and lives with his heart on his sleeve. Eddie’s also heard enough about Buck 1.0 to know that if Buck wanted him that way, he’d know by now. But throughout their friendship, Buck has never shown any inclination that he feels the same way.
The last thing Eddie wants to do is make his best friend uncomfortable, and ruin what they’ve managed to build together. So, he pushes it down, determined to move on.
But, every now and again, there’ll be a moment. A moment where their eyes will meet across a scene, or they’ll be watching a movie and Buck will lean into him. In those moments, Eddie thinks there might be a chance that Buck feels something more .
Needless to say, Eddie feels torn.
Eddie’s thoughts are interrupted by a nurse, speaking to the assembled group in the waiting room.
“Family of Evan Buckley?” the nurse asks. He’s not the only one there. Maddie’s there, of course, along with Chim and Bobby. Both Athena and Hen had been there earlier as well, but had to leave. “You can see him now. Dont stay for too long though, he needs rest.”
They all follow the nurse through to Buck’s room.
His skin is pale and he looks completely exhausted, but he’s alive, and that’s all that matters. Buck instantly perks up the moment he sees them, his eyes lighting up as they file in.
“Hey guys,” Buck says, his voice raspy. There are no words for how much relief it fills him with, to see Buck alive and well enough to speak. The perpetual ache in his chest abates slightly, and Eddie hangs back as the others rush forward.
Maddie rushes straight to his bedside, quickly wrapping her little brother into a fierce hug.
“Hey,” Chim greets, perching on the end of the bed. “How’s our favourite disaster magnet feeling?”
“I’m the favourite?” Buck replies, always first out the gate with deprecating humour.
“Who else would it be?” Chim states. “You should ask them if they have a frequent flyer program at this hospital. What is this, like your sixth stay in three years?”
“Seventh,” Eddie corrects.
“Seventh?” Buck repeats, as if it’s only just now occurring to him that he’s spent an inordinate amount of time in hospitals over the last few years. After a moment, Buck breaks into a joking smile. “Two more and then the next one's free, right?”
“How about no more?” Maddie suggests as she pulls back slightly, her eyes glassy. Eddie wholeheartedly agrees.
“How about you listen to your sister?,” Bobby says. “Let’s try to avoid hospital stays in future.”
“Okay,” Buck says, and Eddie knows this is the closest thing they’ll get to a promise in regards to this. “Seriously though, I’m fine. The doctor thinks I’ll be home in a week or so.”
Even so, Maddie still fusses over him while Chim and Bobby keep up the conversation. Eddie, meanwhile, continues to hang back, trying his absolute best to shove down a conflicting range of emotions, and work out just what he’s going to do about them.
Bobby is the first to leave, obviously relieved to see that Buck is conscious and stable. On his way out, he pauses next to Eddie.
“You’re overthinking it,” Bobby says quietly, so that only Eddie hears. “Just be honest with him. I think you’ll be surprised at how well it goes.”
“Is it that obvious?” Eddie asks, more than a little panicked that he hasn't been hiding it as well as he thought.
Bobby doesn’t respond, instead just giving him a look before he leaves, and it’s answer enough.
If the Captain knows, there’s a not small chance that Hen and Chim know, and probably Athena too. And if Chim knows, then Maddie definitely knows, and Dios, that’s a realisation all of its own.
Eddie hazards a glance to the others. Maddie is too busy with Buck, but Chim notices, and gives him a look as well.
They definitely know.
Eddie barely has any time to come to grips with the fact that his massive crush on his best friend is apparently public knowledge at the firehouse before Chim and Maddie begin to leave as well.
“I’ll be back first thing tomorrow!” Maddie promises, as she and Chim make their way out.
“Looking forward to it!” Buck says, with as much enthusiasm as he can muster.  As soon as she leaves though, Buck deflates, no longer needing to keep up his energetic charade.
Eddie knows that Buck considers himself a burden to others. He sees it in the way that he always puts others first, and how he’ll always try to make others feel better at the expense of himself.
It speaks volumes about how far they’ve come, that Buck is comfortable enough around him to let his walls drop. To be vulnerable.
Eddie takes the spot right next to Buck that Maddie was previously occupying, making a mental note to not stay too long. Buck really does need to rest, but Eddie just needs a bit more time to convince himself he’s really okay.
As he sits, Eddie puts his hand on Buck’s arm, just above his wrist. It’s grounding, to feel his warm skin, a reminder that he’s alive.
“Tell Chris I’m sorry I’ll miss pizza night this Friday.” Buck says, sounding genuinely remorseful.
“I’m sure he’ll understand.” Eddie says, because he will. He’s such a good kid. He’ll bring Chris to visit him in a few days, when Buck has more of his energy back.
It says so much though, about the kind of person that Buck is. Even in a hospital bed, he’s still thinking about others first.
As bad as it sounds, it frustrates Eddie sometimes, seeing just how selfless Buck can be. Like he doesn’t think he’s worth the worry.
And now that he’s seen it for himself, that he knows that Buck’s okay, Eddie starts to get just a little bit angry. He can feel it, how the rage simmers just beneath the surface of his skin.
How could Buck do something so reckless? Does he really not see what it does to others, to those around him? Or does he just not care?
His internal strife must be pretty obvious, because after a moment, Buck asks, “Is everything okay?”
“Really?” Eddie barks out a humourless laugh at the absurdity of the question. “You almost died, Buck.” His voice drops to a hiss, sharper than he intended it to be. He catches himself before he can say something he’ll regret, and sighs. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to snap. You just worried us. You worried me.”
“Come on, it’s not that bad,” Buck says, obviously trying to lighten the mood. “The doctor said all my bleeding was internal. That’s where all the blood is supposed to be.”
And just like that, Eddie’s furious all over again. How can Buck joke about something like this? “Buck—“
“Eddie.”
“This is serious. You can’t just do things like that.”
“What was I supposed to do?” Buck asks, crossing his arms. “I thought I’d heard something, so I went and checked. What if someone was still in there? Am I supposed to just leave them behind?”
Yes, Eddie wants to say, but he knows that Buck is right. He probably would have gone back to check as well. He’s not going to win the argument on this front, so he changes tact.
“You almost died, again,” Eddie repeats, because really, that’s the important part here.
“But I didn’t,” Buck insists.
Eddie sighs again. They’re just going around in circles. He looks down, to where his hand is still holding Buck’s wrist. Now is the time for honesty. How would he have felt, if Buck had died and he never told him just how much he means to him?
But this isn’t about him - if nothing else, Buck should know that somebody loves him, the way he deserves to be.
“You can’t keep doing this, Buck. I don’t know what I’d do without you.” Eddie confesses. "I can't lose you.
"You won't." Buck promises, as if he could ever keep a promise like that.
He could take the easy way out, and just leave it there, especially since words so often fail him. But he refuses to back down, this time. Steeling himself, Eddie reaches out to grasp Buck’s hand, twining their fingers together. His skin is rough, calloused from hard work, but the pulse that beats against Eddie’s palm is comforting.
Buck's eyes go wide at the contact.
He meets Eddie's eyes, realisation dawning on his face.
"Oh."
His gaze flicks down to Eddie's lips and back up.
Taking a chance, Eddie leans in, closing the last few inches of distance between them. The kiss is gentle and chaste, but full of promise. Eddie breaks away after a moment, cognizant of Buck’s injured state. But before he can pull away, Buck reaches up with his free hand and pulls him right back in.
Their second kiss is just as good as the first, and Eddie melts into the softness of Buck’s lips against his own.
A pained exhale snaps Eddie back to reality and he reluctantly pulls away. “You’re not well.”
“I’m fine,” Buck says, slightly breathless but not seeming to mind. “Besides, I’ve really been hoping that would happen for a while now.”
“Me too,” Eddie says, heart thrumming in his chest. After a moment, he adds, “Why did you never say anything?”
“I didn’t want to ruin what we had, not when I didn’t know how you felt,” Buck admits. “I know that I have a reputation, and I didn’t want you to think that’s all it was about.”
“I never would have thought that,” Eddie says, his heart clenching at the words. He may not have ever met ‘Buck 1.0’, but in the time he’s known Buck, he’s never been anything less than loyal and selfless. He doesn’t like that Buck thinks he’d judge him for his past. “But, same. About not wanting to ruin it.”
“I love you,” Buck blurts out. “Sorry, I know that’s a lot, really early, but it’s true.”
“It’s okay,” Eddie quickly reassures. “It’s not too much, at all. I love you too.”
Buck lets out a shaky laugh. “God, we’re both idiots.”
“Yeah, we are.” Eddie ducks his head to hide his fond grin. “So what happens now?”
“I’m going to date you so hard.” Buck states, absolutely beaming.
“Well first, how about we work on getting you out of here?” Eddie starts. He can’t seem to pull himself away from Buck, although Buck doesn’t seem to want to let go either. “And then I take you out to dinner?”
“If you insist.”
***
He woke up hearing faint sounds of conversation from the kitchen. He immediately knew that Buck had to come over, since he was the only one who had a key. Then he heard his laughter, which only confirmed what Eddie thought. The only thing he was a little confused about was why Buck was there so early. And why didn’t he or Christopher wake him up.
He picked up his phone to check the time. It wasn’t even 9am yet. They had a day off after the 24-hour shift they’d just finished. How the hell did Buck get out of bed so early on his day off after a 24-hour shift and having spent the evening before with them?
Eddie stretched, putting his phone away. Then he sighed and got out of bed. He quietly made his way to the kitchen, where he saw Buck and Chris making breakfast. It immediately brought a smile to his face. Buck was so great with his son, and Chris loved Buck so much.
Eddie leaned against the door frame, watching Buck put another pancake on the pile on the plate, while Christopher was sitting with another plate in front of him, decorating a pancake with fruit and whipped cream that could be seen all over the table.
“What’s happening here?” Eddie asked, and both Chris and Buck looked at him, startled.
“Happy birthday, daddy!” Chris yelled, laughing. Eddie was a little surprised, as he kind of forgot about it. But in his defense, it was early.
“You were supposed to be asleep. We wanted to bring you breakfast to bed.” Buck said, trying not to smile.
“Sorry.” Eddie rolled his eyes with a chuckle. He walked towards the table, leaning down to leave a kiss on Chris’ head.
“Happy birthday, Eddie.” Buck said with a soft smile, handing him a plate with the pancake that Chris was preparing on it.
“Thank you both. You shouldn’t have.” he said, not able to take his eyes off of Buck, whose cheeks got a little pink.
“It was Christopher’s idea.” Buck shrugged. “Now, sit down and eat, Chris made them, I just fried.”
“Oh, really?” Eddie looked back at his son. “When did you learn how to cook?”
“Buck and abuela taught me.” Chris laughed. Eddie could listen to that laugh forever.
“Good. You can cook for me then.” Eddie smiled, taking a place at the table next to his son.
“Buck can cook for us.” was Christopher’s answer in such a tone, as if it was the most obvious thing in the world. Eddie looked up and his eyes met Buck’s. “Right, Buck?”
“Of course, buddy.” Buck smiled, his eyes not leaving Eddie’s. A long moment passed, with them just exchanging a fond look, before Buck cleared his throat and turned away to start cleaning up after cooking. “So, what are you gonna do today?” he asked.
“Spend the day with you two.” Eddie shrugged. That’s honestly all he wanted to do for his birthday. He didn’t care what they were gonna do, he just wanted to be with Christopher and Buck. “But first would you sit down and eat breakfast with us?” he asked Buck, as Christopher grabbed a pancake and already started eating. “We’ll clean up later.”
“I will clean up.” Buck clarified, taking a place opposite Eddie. “It’s your birthday, you’re not doing a thing today.”
“Fine with me.” Eddie smiled widely. He observed as Buck took whipped cream and poured like half of the bottle onto his plate. Then he poured some straight into his mouth before noticing that Eddie was observing him, and blushing a bit.
“What?” Buck asked. Eddie just shook his head. He wasn’t going to say that he was staring because he thought Buck was adorable. And he was scared that if he opened his mouth, he would say just that.
“I want more whipped cream too!” Chris exclaimed, and Buck was happy to help.
Eddie just sat there, observing his two boys make an even bigger mess in the kitchen. Fortunately, he wasn’t the one who would be cleaning that.
***
They didn’t do much. They went to the park, played with Christopher on the playground. They got ice cream. They ate lunch. And then they went back to Eddie’s and watched a couple of movies. It was like their ordinary day off, but it was perfect. Eddie had fun and that’s really all he wanted for his birthday.
When it got late, Buck and Eddie put Christopher to bed together, per his request, and then Buck was about to leave. But despite spending the whole day together, Eddie did not want him to go. So he invited him for a beer.
They sat on the couch, drinking their beers in comfortable silence, until Eddie spoke up.
“Hey.” he said, and Buck turned his head to look at him. “Thank you.”
“What for?” Buck frowned with a little confused smile.
“For today.” Eddie shrugged, taking another sip of his beer.
“We literally did nothing special. It was what we always do.” Buck rolled his eyes.
“Well, you and Christopher were there, so it was pretty special.” Eddie said, not looking at Buck.
“Just wait for next year. I’ll plan something really special.”
“Like what?” Eddie asked with amusement, his gaze back on Buck.
“Don’t know yet. I have a year to figure something out. But it’s gonna be awesome.” Buck leaned his head back on the couch and looked at Eddie.
“I’ll hold you to it.” Eddie smirked, mirroring Buck’s position. So now they were just sitting there with their heads leaned on the back of the couch, staring at each other. “But seriously, today was great. You being there was all I needed. You and Chris.” he clarified and swallowed hard, hearing how it sounded. But the truth was, all he needed was his son and Buck. They were the two most important people in his life, which was kind of crazy because he’s known Buck for such a short amount of time… but as cheesy as it sounded, he believed they were soulmates. He just couldn’t imagine what his life would be like without Buck in it. And Buck was so great with Christopher, and they already acted like a family, and Eddie wondered… what if Buck feels the same? What if he wonders about them too? He never really dared to let himself think that far, but what the hell, it was his birthday and he could daydream a little. Even if Buck was right next to him.
“What?” Buck asked, when Eddie’s smile widened a bit. They kept looking into each other’s eyes, and at that point that wasn’t even weird anymore.
“I love you.” Eddie sighed, lost in Buck’s eyes, and just content to be there with him.
And then his brain caught up with his mouth, his eyes widened, and he started to panic. He raised his head and sat up straight, looking back at Buck with horor.
“You do?” Buck asked, and there was a hint of something in his voice… like hope? He blushed and seemed surprised and a bit nervous, but he didn’t move. He just kept looking at Eddie.
“Yeah.” Eddie breathed. He figured, if he’s already said it, he can’t just backtrack now.
“Okay.” Buck bit his lip, pouring a bit of his beer into his mouth, raising his head a bit to do that, then leaning it back again and looking up at the ceiling. “Good.”
Eddie was confused now. Buck looked confident now, and there was a hint of a smile on his face. “What?” it was Eddie’s turn to ask.
“I mean, I’m in love with you.” he said slowly, glancing at Eddie. “And apparently everyone could see it but you. And me, before I realized, with some help, to be honest, like-” he started rambling, and Eddie cut him off with a kiss. It was quick and rushed, and nervous, it was like testing the waters. “Or we can do that, instead of talking.” Buck nodded, as Eddie pulled away to look at him. “We can definitely do more of that.” he sat up to put his beer away, and then they were making out, more confidently now.
Eddie could not believe it was happening. He felt like he was floating. Buck was such a great kisser. And their hands started exploring each other’s bodies, and the kiss was getting more and more heated, with a lot of tongue and teeth, and moaning… God, Eddie loved to hear the small noises Buck made.
And then they heard a voice.
“Daddy?” Christopher said, and Eddie and Buck jumped off of each other and looked in the direction of the voice. Chris was standing there, looking at them with an unreadable expression.
“Hey, buddy, why aren’t you asleep?” Eddie tried to play it cool, but his voice was shaking and he was a little out of breath. He ran a hand through his disheveled hair and attempted a smile.
“I can’t sleep. Buck, can you read me another story?” he asked, and for a second Eddie thought maybe he somehow didn’t notice them making out. Which was not possible, but he could hope.
“Sure.” Buck said, sounding similar to Eddie. Eddie looked at him and saw his red face and flushed lips. He wanted to kiss him again. “Just give me a second and I’ll be right there, okay?”
“Okay.” Chris smiled and turned around. “Oh, by the way.” he added, before starting to walk back to his room. “I’m happy that you two are finally together.”
Eddie and Buck looked at each other in shock. Why the hell would Christopher say that? They were pretty obvious to everyone else, apparently, but a ten year old kid? Well, he might have been more perceptive than Eddie gave him credit for.
“I guess I have to go read him a story.” Buck said, still not moving.
“Yeah.” Eddie nodded. “I guess you do.” he took a deep breath, his eyes dropping down to Buck’s lips again. “And after you’re back, we will, uh, talk.” he said.
“Talk.” Buck repeated, sounding as if he has never heard that word before.
“Yeah, talk.” Eddie bit his lip, and Buck chuckled, leaving a quick lingering peck on Eddie’s lips.
“Sure. We’ll talk.” he got up. “I’ll be right back.”
And, well, after they made sure Christopher was really asleep this time, they sat down to talk. But it ended up with more making out, and promises that they surely will talk in the morning.
They fell asleep cuddled on the couch, still half sitting, and their backs were killing them the next morning. Eddie thought it was more than worth it. Because now he got to kiss Buck whenever he wanted, hold his hand, just do all the couple-y things he had wished he could do. And he could tell Buck he loves him, and that was just such a weight off his shoulders that he was carrying for most part of the past couple of years. And the best thing was, his son was completely fine, or even more than happy, than Buck and Eddie were together now.
***
“Hey, you know what?” Eddie asked a couple of days later, as they were cooking dinner together (well, Buck was cooking, Eddie was tasked with chopping the vegetables).
“What?” Buck asked, stirring in the pot.
“We got together on my birthday.” Eddie frowned.
“Yeah.” Buck looked back at him, an amused expression on his face. “So what? Are you scared that you’re only gonna get one gift from me?”
“No.” Eddie rolled his eyes. “But it’s not fair. Our anniversary should have its own day to celebrate it.”
“Anniversary? Wow, it’s only been a couple of days and you’re already a year ahead.” Buck teased, shaking his head. “How do you know it’s even gonna last?” he asked, but Eddie knew he was joking. They knew that what they had was special and they would fight to keep it.
“Oh, shut up.” Eddie chuckled. “I just mean…” he drifted off. What did he mean?
“I personally like that it’s on your birthday.” Buck walked over to him. “That way our anniversary is just all the more special, because my second favorite person in the world was born on this day.” he hugged Eddie, hiding his face in his neck.
“Second?” Eddie scoffed, trying to sound offended.
“I mean, I love you, but Chris will forever be my number one.” Buck said and Eddie felt a fond smile tugging on his lips. He loved that Buck loved Christopher so much.
“I love you.” Eddie said quietly, as Buck raised his head and left a quick kiss on Eddie’s lips.
“So you’re gonna let this anniversary thing go?” Buck raised his eyebrows. “We can’t just choose another day, that would be cheating.”
“Cheating?” Eddie frowned, a small laugh escaping his lips.
“I would feel bad celebrating on another day.” he walked back over to the stove. “It would be a fake anniversary. Besides, one day maybe we’ll have one on a different day.” he added more quietly, and even shyly. And Eddie’s heartbeat sped up. Was Buck suggesting… that one day he would want to marry him? “But that’s far, far in the future.” Buck added quickly, laughing nervously.
“Yeah.” Eddie breathed. They just got together, it was a long way to marriage. Although they were technically raising a kid together already… But Buck was right, that was way far in the future. That they will definitely have, because now that he had him, Eddie was not going to let go.
“You done with that?” Buck gestured to the half-chopped vegetables in front of Eddie, as if the conversation didn’t happen. But he was still a bit red in the face.
“No, give me a sec.” Eddie said, realizing that he was just standing there for the past few minutes, doing nothing.
There was no rush. They had time. And they had each other. He could not be happier.
I'm so sorry, it's such a horrible day all around and I'm sending you al the good vibes I can find. I've never really sent a prompt before, but if you felt like writing some Buddie 2.01 AU, where their first meeting wasn't actually their first meeting, that might be fun? Or literally anything, everything you write makes me smile! Hope it gets better soon!! ❤
Hey! Thank you for sending this. Tonight has been an absolute shitshow of emotions but having something to focus on definitely helped.
So, yeah. This is a First Meeting AU of sorts. Again, thank you for giving me something to do other than cry. I really appreciate it.
Dear Eddie,
Thank you for being my bunk buddy. I had a really good camp with you. Please write me from Texas.
From, Buck.
 Dear Buck,
Hi from Texas. Thank you for the bracelet. My sister said bracelets are for girls but I don’t care. I also had a really good time at camp and I can’t wait to go next year. Will you be there, next year? Maybe we could bunk together again. School starts soon and I’m a little nervous because fifth grade is my last year at this school and I don’t want to leave my friends behind. What’s your favourite subject in school? Mine
 Dear Eddie,
Please tell your sister than anyone can wear bracelets and that if she tries to make fun of them again, the ghost of Camp Kuriakas will haunt her dreams. I tried that on my sister but she just laughed at me so maybe you’ll have better luck. Mom says I can’t go back to camp next year because we’re moving and it will be too far away. But don’t worry, you can write me from camp and tell me all about it. I don’t really like school but I do like the library. I’ve been reading this book called
Dear Buck,
Camp wasn’t as fun without you but you were right about Suzie Pecoski, she had to leave a day early because the popcorn got stuck in her braces. Jose laughed but I told him not to and he told Counselor Lia that I punched him. So after dinner, I did. He didn’t tell that time. I still missed you though. I hope your new house is nice. What is your room like?
 Dear Eddie,
I can’t believe I start high school tomorrow. I tried to call Maddie and ask for advice but she didn’t pick up so I guess I’m on my own for this one. Except I’m not alone because I have you. You’d answer if I called, right, Eddie? Anyways, I’ve been thinking about your theory about the island being purgatory
 Buck,
I have no idea what I’m doing but I definitely think I just asked Kylie Wilcox to the dance. I am freaking out! Kylie’s nice and she’s so pretty but I didn’t mean to ask her. I just meant to ask if she needed someone to help on the committee. But I guess I have a date to the dance. What do I even wear? I’m not asking Sophia. One: she’s two years younger and would just make fun of all my choices and Two: she would definitely tell Adriana who would tell mom who would tell dad and then I’d never hear the end of it. Help me, Buck, you’re my only hope!
 Eddie,
You do remember that these letters take weeks to get to me, right? Didn’t the dance already happen? I hope you didn’t trip over your two left feet and fall flat on your face. Oh wait. Yes I do. That’d be so funny. And you need to have more fun, Diaz.
 Buck,
Have you ever had feelings for a guy that you thought you could only have for a girl?
 Hi Eddie,
Isn’t email so much better? We’re one step closer to communicating like human beings. Welcome to the 21st century. Anyways, graduation’s coming up and my dad keeps asking me where I’m going to go to college and I don’t know how much longer I can keep avoiding answering him. How do I tell him I failed? How am I going to face him? He’s going to be so disappointed in me. Maddie and Doug are driving in for the ceremony and I haven’t even told her that they’re letting me walk across the stage out of pity. I’m scared.
 Dear Buck,
Greetings from El Paso! Remember when I said I was never going to work for my father? Guess who’s the newest employee. I suppose it’s a good thing. This thing with Shannon is getting serious and I know I should have a stable job. I just thought I’d have a little time, you know? I thought I’d get to be me for a little bit. Sorry Seattle didn’t work out. Hey, maybe you could try Texas next. Try all four corners of the country, right? That wouldn’t be so bad.
 Dear Eddie,
I am writing from an internet café in Guatemala. Don’t ask me how I got here, I’m not entirely sure myself but I know it involved tequila. And possibly the guy I woke up next to (I think his name was Nico?) but who knows. Congratulations on Shannon getting pregnant!!! I know you’re freaking out. You don’t have to tell me that you’re freaking out because I know you. But you’re going to be a great dad. Hell, you’ve been half-raising me since you helped me learn my times tables at camp. I can’t believe what losers we were that we stayed up all night doing math. Anyways, I’ll let you know when I’m back in the states. And STOP FREAKING OUT.
 Dear Buck,
I’m sorry it’s taken so long to reply. The WiFi’s shit over here. I’m actually typing this from a hospital bed. Don’t worry, I’m okay. Or at least I will be. They said they’re sending me home and (you’re the only one I can tell this to) I got scared. I don’t know what’s waiting for me back in Texas. I don’t know what I’m coming home to. The officers keep telling me that it was an honor to serve my country and Shannon keeps telling me that she would rather I serve my family. I thought I was doing that but I was wrong. I was wrong about a lot of things, Buck, but there’s one thing I do know. Only one of us is throwing our life away for a worthy cause.
 Eddie,
You are a pretentious asshole, you know that? You don’t know what the hell you’re talking about. Just because I don’t have a wife and a kid and a white picket fence, you think I don’t know what I’m doing with my life. You’re wrong. You think you know me because we shared a room one summer when we were kids but you don’t know me, Eddie Diaz. You just want me to be like you.
 I’m sorry, Eddie. I didn’t mean any of it. The truth is I’m lost. You were right. You’re always right. I know I’m just a screw up but please don’t tell me I’ve screwed this up too.
 Eddie, I’m so sorry. Please respond.
 Hey Buck,
It’s been a while (two years, I think?). I just wanted to see how you were doing. A little update on my life. Shannon left me. Sort of. It’s complicated. Christopher and I actually just moved to California so I could start a new job. I’m hopeful that this is the right change for us. I hope you’re doing well. I know I never said it but I forgive you and I’m sorry. You were my best friend, Buck, and I hope we can be friends again. I didn’t realize how much I relied on you until you were gone. I know I’m the one who shut you out. I really hope you can forgive me for that because I miss you. I miss my friend. Anyways, if you’re ever in Los Angeles, let me know. You know after all these years, I don’t know what you look like. I still remember the skinny kid with the birthmark over his eye who tried to go skinny dipping in the lake but slipped on the docks and bruised his elbow. I wonder what he’s up to.
 Dear Eddie,
You’ll never believe this, but I ran into a guy at work who has the same name as you. What a coincidence, right? I think I was in denial for most of the day that, of all places, I would reunite with you at a fire station in Los Angeles. But I’m really glad we did.
 Buck,
I’m sending instructions for Christopher’s birthday party (I know, I know, you are the party planning expert but I’m the father so you have to at least pretend to listen to me). He’s really looking forward to it. It’s the first one without Shannon so Buck? Please make it perfect for my kid? I could really use a win this year. And no ice cream cake (don’t think I don’t know he’s been trying to talk you into it). I’m already going to have to deal with a room full of hyper nine-year-olds, I don’t need melted ice cream on top of that. What am I saying? You’re the party planner, you can clean it up. What would I do without you?
 Eddie,
I was going to text you but that seemed too informal and there’s too much pressure on a phone call so I thought I’d go back to what we do best. You were right when you said I was afraid. I’ve never felt this way about anyone and it’s you. We’ve known each other our whole lives and it never occurred to me that I might be in love with you. But that doesn’t mean I’m not. Eddie, I think I’ve been in love with you since we were nine years old and you kissed my bruised elbow. When you kissed me tonight, I don’t know, I froze. I’m so sorry, Eddie. If I could do it over, I’d still be kissing you. God, I really hope I haven’t screwed this up for good.
 Hey Buck,
Turn around.
Love, Eddie.
better than this
Eddie’s had a crappy day, so he bakes. Also, Buck’s hugs are magic.
The sun’s just starting to set and the house is silent. Christopher with Pepa because he’d begged to get to go to a sleepover with some cousins, and even if it hadn’t been a crappy shift on the heels of an awful week, Eddie wouldn’t have said no.
When they’d moved to LA, Eddie had worried that Christopher wouldn’t ever be close to his cousins there. Worried that they’d look at him differently because of his CP. Now it seems silly. None of the kids have ever treated Chris differently. They’ve asked questions, sure, and Chris has happily answered them - just like he always has.
His phone buzzes with a text notification from its spot on the kitchen counter, but Eddie ignores it. He doesn’t have even the smallest desire to talk to anyone - and he knows it’s not Pepa for or about Christopher because she always calls.
The ingredients he’d set up on his counter when he’d gotten home silently beckon him. Everything is laid out for the chocolate chips cookies he’s going to make. It’s mindless and familiar and exactly what he needs tonight.
His phone buzzes again as he’s sifting the flour, but again, Eddie ignores it. It’s Buck or Lena, and they’ll both understand his need to just be for a night.
He mixes everything together, including a little of cayenne at the end because that hint of spiciness is his favorite thing about this recipe.
Eddie drops tiredly onto the couch after the dough is safely tucked into the fridge and a timer for 25 minutes is set.
He tries to force his mind to turn off, force himself not to turn over every single decision he’d made on shift. It’s all too easy to torture himself with what ifs. Most days don’t get to him. Most days, he’s good at leaving the job at work. But sometimes, like today, the failures eat at him. The ones they couldn’t save try to cling to his heart.
Digging the heel of his hand into his eyes, his frustrated groan fills the silent house. Pushing himself up, Eddie finds himself back in his kitchen. In front of a sink of dirty dishes.
Eddie knows there’s still at least 15 minutes left on the timer. Which means he has plenty of time to wash the dishes and hopefully lose himself in the repetitive task.
Everything is sitting in the drain, and the counters are clean when the timer finally goes off.
Eddie flicks on the oven to preheat while he scoops little dough balls onto the cookie sheet. He has enough cookie dough to make two batches...maybe three if he makes the cookies on the small side. More than enough to share with Pepa, an unspoken and entirely unnecessary thank you to his aunt for taking Christopher for the night. There might even be enough to share with Buck.
Though his boyfriend has cooked for him plenty of times, he’s never shared anything he’s baked. As he’s setting little balls of dough on the baking mat, he realizes Buck probably doesn’t even know he can. It’s a well known and documented fact that the doesn’t cook well - unless you’re talking about mac and cheese, grilled cheese, and abuela’s chicken noodle soup.
He’s putting the first batch in the oven when his phone rings. Wiping his fingers on the back of his jeans, he answers without looking, assuming it’s Chris calling to say goodnight.
But the voice coming through the speaker is Buck’s. He’s only half listening to Buck’s story - something about shaving cream when he cuts the other man off.
“Can you come over?” He’d been so sure he didn’t want anyone in his space tonight. So sure he needed to be alone to process. But hearing Buck’s deep, calm voice makes him want the other man in his space.
The line goes silent for a moment before he hears Buck’s agreement. “I can be there in like half hour?”
He almost tells Buck he loves him then, but catches himself. They haven’t said it yet. And he doesn’t want to say it over the phone just because he’s grateful that Buck can apparently sense when he needs him.
“See you soon,” he says instead before hanging up.
When he hears a gentle tapping on his front door a little more than half hour later, his kitchen smells pleasantly chocolaty, though he can smell a hint of cayenne too. The first two batches of cookies are cooling on the counter, and the last batch is in the oven with just a few minutes left. He feels slightly more at ease than he had even just a half hour ago.
When he pulls open his front door, Buck immediately steps into his space, arms wrapped around him like it was second nature. And Eddie didn’t realize how much he’d needed a hug until right now. He melts into Buck’s arms, the tension he hadn’t fully realized he’d been carrying melting away.
He means to say thank you when he pulls back. “Do you want a cookie?” is what actually leaves his mouth.
Buck’s brows shoot up his forehead, but after a moment, he nods.
Taking Buck’s hand, he tugs him through the house and into the kitchen. He glances behind him once, sees the questions on Buck’s face that he doesn’t seem to know how to ask.
“It’s been a long week. I don’t want to talk about it,” he says as he drops Buck’s hand and continues to the counter to grab two cookies. They’re still warm, so he knows they’ll be perfectly gooey when they bite into them.
“Sometimes, I bake. It’s....” He starts to explain but realizes he has no idea what to say so he trails off, settling beside Buck at the table and holding the plate out to him instead.
He smiles slightly when Buck’s eyes widen in surprise when he takes a bite of the cookie.
“S’good,” Buck mumbles around a mouthful of cookie, surprised.
Eddie hums softly, offering him the other half of the cookie in his hand, which Buck eagerly takes.
They sit in silence, Buck’s knee nudging against his. It’s a barely there touch, but it’s appreciated even if Eddie can’t quite bring himself to say that.
The oven timer going off a few minutes later breaks the comfortable silence, startling both of them slightly.
He can’t keep himself from trailing his fingers lightly along Buck’s arm when he gets up to get the cookies out, delighting in the faint shiver that runs through the other man at the touch.
When he turns around, Buck is pushing himself out of his chair.
“What are you doing?” he asks, confusion coloring his face.
“I’ll help you put stuff away.” Buck says it like it’s simple. Say it like he doesn’t have questions. Maybe for Buck, it is simple.
He’s hit with a rush of affection for the other man. It’s not an uncommon feeling. He’d been worried he was falling too quickly. That things were going to crash and burn. But he’s finding that Buck is worth that risk.
“I love you,” he murmurs, stepping into Buck’s space and wrapping his arms around the other man’s waist.
He feels Buck stiffen in his arms for a moment before he goes boneless. They haven’t said it before. And maybe he shouldn’t have said it now, but Eddie doesn’t regret it.
Especially not when he hears Buck soft exhale, his own soft murmur of, “I love you too.”
