i think the appeal of juri to me is that women do not often get to have the comically edgy, so-far-gone it loops around to being kinda cool again visual designs, like she has a dyed hair streak and a spider tattoo and heterochromia and one eye glows bright purple its really a lot.

but also shes just a really depressed angry person who lashes out at anyone around her, especially people who try to get closer to her. which is kind of an interesting place to take a design like that. its more understated than just “i look evil and i am”

i have a big soft spot for characters who try to compensate for the lack of control and/or security they feel in their lives with anger/violence and thrillseeking. i know i’m talking about fucking street fighter here but i really am just still thinking about how at the end of your master missions with juri, after she’s kind of opened up to you and spoken frankly to you a number of times with a lot less of an emotional wall up, she abruptly pushes you away and tells you to not bother her again. idk.

there’s nothing after that. that’s just the end. you finally take two rounds off her in a fight and she just tells you “I just thought if I could get some meathead to copy my moves… maybe, just maybe, that’d be fun. But I’ve had enough. I’m sick of it.” there’s no resolution here. in her arcade mode there’s also no resolution, even though she acknowledges the fact that she feels awful — she has no idea how to fix it. she resents chun-li for her ability to heal and grow and for encouraging juri to do the same.

she lies to you about how influential and powerful she is, lies to you about her friendly relations with others, tells you the truth about her family and childhood trauma then tries to pass it off as a lie, candidly expresses her dissatisfaction with life to you. and then that’s that. it’s over.

obviously, speaking in terms of real-world motivation, her visuals were made with horny/rule of cool first and tying in with that characterization second, but in the context of that characterization it feels more like a deliberate attempt to project volatility and unapproachability. it’s kinda interesting to think about.

have to say I really loved how Shiv brought up the waiter. Does she give a shit about him, or that Kendall killed him? Nah, not really. Will she weaponise it to appear more moral in the moment? Yeah, absolutely.

It's like she said to Mencken: she's flexible. She LARPed as progressive to get her career in politics and genuinely believed she believed all these things--it's easy to believe you believe nice things, when the shit you actually do care about isn't in conflict with those beliefs. But then she wrangled Gil and Logan into a handshake, and she played her card as a woman to silence a victim--and, by shooting the one with her head above the parapet, many more victims--of institutional sexual abuse. She has even hurt herself by sailing too close to the wind in her girlboss liberal lean-in shit sometimes, with her dinosaur cull comment at Argestes, or with overplaying the hand she thought she had at Tern Haven.

She was viscerally angry at having to take the photo with Mencken, and perhaps angrier still when ATN called the election for him. Not because he's a fascist, although he is, and not because she dislikes him--although she does! She was angry primarily because the photo nuked any chance of a political career for her going forward, and because the call for Mencken hurt her chances with Matsson.

Did she ever make any of that clear in the moment, though? No. She talked about fascism and morals and things do happen, Rome. It is easier to wear that cloak that sometimes helps her--the woman cloak, where she claims to care for the group that she belongs to and steps upon its members at the same time--than it is to admit personal rage or vulnerability. That would be hysterical, and grasping, and not CEO material.

Shiv's relationship with womanhood is like Peter Pan's with his shadow. She used to be able to cast it off, or feel like she could, and now it is sewn in to her very fabric: it's everywhere she fucking walks.

She hates that there is not a play she can make that will separate her from the group of women-who-experience-misogyny. And still she makes use of that group, because it's one of an increasingly limited set of options she has. She was never allowed to gain experience--so she's inexperienced, and implausible, and shut out. It's the treehouse, again, Kendall up there playing king of the fucking castle. Shiv must have spent some holidays like that: Roman might have stayed with his mom in England on shorter breaks from military school, and Shiv was left to snotty, whickering horses and fucking tennis, throwing rocks up at Kendall whenever she saw a limb emerge from a window or doorway.

Anyway, if Shiv can't have the high ground, at least she can try to claim the moral one when it suits her. That's what I see as the context for her jab about Andrew Dodds.

Since work has been very stressful lately I don't have anything new to show, but there's one character I never posted here - Petra! A gem Dragonborn (black topaz) who's a necromancer warlock to some ancient lich creature. The second drawing is her form of dread - a sudden burst of hardened crystal all across her body (oh the poor clothes) and a bit more wild draconic instinct coming on top.

She was initially offered as a sacrifice by the lich's cult, but hatched from her egg before the ritual could be finished. This was taken as a sign to keep the baby dragon and raise it instead. Around the same time a tiefling boy was born, and per the tradition of the cult, the two were taught together and raised together to become the perfect duo of mage and his protector. Petra is his shield and blade while he's the tongue and the soul of their cause. Recently, they were both sent out into the world to share the teachings of their religion and find their "god" if possible.

At least that's the theory, I didn't get to play her yet, but maybe soon! The tiefling will be played by my partner, and we totally didn't try to copy the necromancer - cavalier tradition from the Locked Tomb series. Nope, not at all!
