💛💙SPIRK FIC REC - MY FAVOURITES💙💛
As a follow up to my recent post about how few fics make it to my favourites list, and how special they are to achieve that distinction, I decided to share my current list.
I’ve shared some of these individually in the past but here you’ll have them all together.
If you've read any of these already then I'd love to hear your thoughts on whether you loved them as much as I did! 🥰
(NB: these are not listed in any order of preference. Mostly it’s the reverse order in which I read them)
Leave No Soul Behind by whochick Words: 258,951
AOS, AU Canon-Divergence. Spock, Kirk and the other valiant members of the Emergency Personnel Ambulance Service fight to save lives and turn the tide of the ongoing war against Nero and his fleet before it’s too late. Such a beautiful slow burn for Spock and Kirk.
Atlas by distractedKat Words: 135,529
AOS. Follow on from 2009, Kirk, Spock and the rest deal with the aftermath of Nero’s attack and rebuilding after the decimation of the ‘Fleet and Academy. An exciting tale with twists and turns involving black ops, bad-mirals, action, love and fierce loyalty.
The Lotus Eaters by aldora89 Words: 93,594
AOS. Stranded on a planet together, with multiple dangers and very little hope of rescue, Jim and Spock have no choice but to rely on each other to survive. Spectacular plot, amazing world building, fabulous original character and an epic slow burn Spirk love story!
With Your Feet on the Air and Your Head on the Ground by flippyspoon Words: 39,188 @flippyspoon
SNW. A phenomenal Spirk fic in which Kirk is stuck in Spock's mind while the crew work to find a way to retrieve his body. A wonderful getting to know you/falling for you hard tale. Wonderfully written and highly entertaining.
Evolution by Rhaegal (RhaegalKS) Words: 149,293
AOS. Covering the first year of their 5 year mission, this is totally flawless. The character voices are perfection, the prose spectacular. The whole thing plays like an AOS movie. It’s phenomenal.
Emotions by LadyRa Words: 35,569
TOS. Spock gets drugged on a shore leave and is overwhelmed with its effects. Kirk tries to pick up the pieces. A beautiful, and wonderfully grounded, story of realising how much they mean to each other.
And When the Bond Breaks by LadyRa Words: 24,631
TOS. Spock takes out a shuttle to investigate an anomaly and returns to an Enterprise that’s not his own. Time travel shenanigans with such emotional depth that it will traumatise you in the best way. Stunningly good!
All Our Tomorrows Come Today by flippyspoon Words: 18,156 @flippyspoon
SNW. A newly introduced Jim and Spock accidentally get a glimpse into the future and see what they’re going to be to each other (a.k.a. Spirk’s Greatest Hits). A stunningly told story about finding the great love of your life.
I Won't Make That Mistake Again by Moreta1848 Words: 69,402 @jennelikejennay
SNW/TOS. An epic story detailing Spock and Kirk’s love throughout their lives, beginning from their meeting on Pike’s Enterprise (SNW) and continuing on to an eventual  Generations fix-it happy ending. Wonderful!
No Going Back, No Before by spirkme Words: 78,486 @spirkme915
SNW/TOS. Timeline shenanigans, spies, twists & turns, pining, angst, sacrifice and so so much love!
The 1,000 Hour Sleep by spqr Words: 27,227
SNW. Jim’s been infected with a pathogen that means he can’t sleep, but it he doesn’t he’ll die. Cue Spock and his Vulcan telepathy helping Jim to achieve the sleep he needs, while they get to know each other within their shared mindscapes. A sweet and exciting story about falling in love and overcoming your own inner demons.
First Best Destiny by Ophelia_j Words: 387,733
TOS/TNG. Such a very special fic. Epic in its scope, it covers the entire timeline of Spirk from their very first meeting through to a  clever and satisfying Generations fix-it ending. It provides extra scenes, additional dialogue and internal monologues to expand on existing canon in a really compelling and effective way. Truly this is my new TOS canon.
The Steadfastness of Stars by itsnatalie Words: 61,566
AOS. After Beyond, The crew investigate sudden climate change on a frozen planet and find more than they bargained for. The perfect mix of great plot, fun original characters, action, mystery, world building and deep deep love.
Let Forever Be by gunstreet Words: 43,446 @gunstreet
TOS. A really compelling character study of James T. Kirk. An excellent companion piece to City on the Edge of Forever. Exploring what Jim and Spock got up to, and all they had to overcome, while trying to find Bones and their way back home.
Time After Time by spaceisgay (ChancellorGriffin) Words: 138,921
SNW. Kirk spends a 6 month rotation on the Enterprise as part of his command training. OK, if there’s a favourite of my favourites then this may be it. It’s such a stunning version of their love story, with a beautifully constructed plot. It runs the emotional gamut from moments that will have you laughing out loud to moments that will have you in floods of tears.
milk and honey by spaceisgay (ChancellorGriffin) Words: 28,651
SNW. Kirk and Spock meet for the first time when they wake up in a prison cell together. A really fun, and extremely clever, version of the ‘aliens made them do it’ trope. It’s intriguing and funny with a real depth of feeling throughout.
The Promised Land by gunstreet Words: 58,260 @gunstreet
TOS. A story that explores the time Jim and Spock spent apart between the end of the 5 year mission and TMP. It’s a beautiful story of reunion and renewal of love. Sometimes achingly sad, but it’s worth it for the happy ending.
Again, if you've read any of these already then I'd love to hear your thoughts on whether you loved them as much as I did! 🥰

Snw spoilers about SPIRK
The CHESS GGAAAAAAMMME
Spock playing the game so fast with Chapel struggling to keep up, while they literally talk about Spock wanting to make their relationship official while Chapel clearly struggles with commitment and giving up/showing emotional territory
I can’t help but KNOW this is where their conflict will always be rooted, that Chapel is slow to fall in love, and so she’ll turn down Spock too late, too painfully late, and by the time we get to TOS he’s going to be hurt by her but she’s still falling in love and her past actions kill her
Tumblr media
BACK TO THE MOMENT
Tumblr media
THEM NOT BEING ABLE TO MATCH PACE WITH KIRK LITERALLY WATCHING FROM AFAR, LURKING AND BEING DEEPLY INVESTED IN THE GAME AND STRATEGY
Kirk then IMMEDIATELY telling the first person who sits next to him about their game, that he’s know EXACTLY what to do. He can not only keep pace with Spock, but maybe even beat him, something that would prove to be difficult. They move at the same, rapid pace. Because they’re both deeply feeling beings and when they feel it’s with their whole body and essence, and with neither pumping the brakes it’s inevitable that they become entwined. And because it’s them, because it’s fucking kirk and spock, they never face any need to let go

✦ MARLEY AND ME SERIES MASTERLIST
you’re a single mom just doing the best that she can to make ends meet. ellie can’t help but think that you're the kindest, most beautiful girl that she’s ever met. compared to taking care of a little girl that's in her terrible twos, coming to terms with the fact that you’re a lesbian is a walk in the park. awkward first encounters, ellie’s broken gay-dar, and her overwhelming urge to take care of the care-giver. . . the road to domesticity is a long one, but it’s well worth the pining that it takes to get there.

✦ INVISIBLE STRING THEORY SERIES MASTERLIST
the marines didn’t ruin ellie. ellie ruined ellie. after being medically discharged she feels lost. being sent to live with joel is more of a last ditch effort to save her and less of a fun reunion for the father-daughter duo. jackson is worlds different than chicago, but the fresh air and sprawling countrysides are a welcome reprieve. ellie finds herself finding comfort in more than just the change in scenery though. after losing your girlfriend due to an accident you feel as though you’ll never find love again- but that was before meeting ellie williams. the two of you figure out that you have more in common than just the fact that she and your girlfriend were both marines though. tethered by some invisible string, the two of you meeting has to be fate. who would have known that you were the golden ticket to ellie’s recovery?

✦ CHERRY FLAVORED MINI SERIES MASTERLIST
your guitarist was carted off to rehab after just one month into your recent tour. fuck. there’s only one thing you can do, and that’s hire a replacement. your band thinks it’s going to be nearly impossible to find someone that is on the same level of talent as your “beloved” guitarist. you don’t have high hopes that anyone can nail the songs quite like he did either, if you’re being brutally honest. enter ellie- she’s a mega fan. the girl knows every lyric and note like the back of her hand. . . and everything about you, which isn’t creepy at all. her apparent obsession with you is something that you and your tour manager can overlook if it means carrying on with the rest of the tour. forced proximity with a stalker-level fan . . . what’s the worst thing that could happen?

I want better for Sybok.
I want a world where he got a fighting chance to do anything but become a cult leader. I’ve seen aus where he becomes a counselor and I can’t stop thinking about it.
No gods, no Sha-Ka-Ree, no cult. Just a kid who knows his history. Who researches Surak, and the world before him, and finds himself dissatisfied with present day Vulcan’s interpretations of his teachings. Unable to see the logic in following one ancient man’s words with no additional input or thought. Is this truly the best way for them to live? His mother didn't think so. He doesn't think so either.
He’s young, and he has big ideas and a lot of charisma, and a lot of inner pain from losing his mother and being suddenly told the way she was raising him was wrong. He quickly earns a reputation as a troublemaker. Indulging in blatant displays of emotionalism, just to prove his point, that he smiled and nothing bad happened, he cried and he felt better after.
He’s dissatisfied and ostracized and convinced there’s a better way to be living.
He fucks off at 18-not quite banished, but so strongly encouraged to leave that he might as well have been-and goes to a college on Earth, because the federation is a post-scarcity society so he has his basic needs met and he just wants to figure himself out, and where better to do that than a college campus, as far away from Vulcan society as possible. On his step-mother's home planet, where he knows at least a little of the culture, the language, what to expect.
He sees the school counselor a lot, and gets a lot out of their sessions. Takes some psychology courses and ends up getting really passionate about it.
Teaches himself to embrace his emotions while acknowledging that it’s very easy to be ruled by them. Utilizes aspects of traditional Vulcan control combined with the human practice of mindfulness to understand his emotions and control his strong impulse to act on them, without completely rejecting them. Knows he is choosing not to control his emotions, but he can and should control the actions he takes in response to them to avoid hurting himself or others. Knows that understanding why he feels a certain way can help him understand himself better.
Lives his best life and studies psychology to help other people find the same joy and peace he has, in whatever form that takes for them.
Then he finds out his baby bro basically told the VSA to fuck off and that dad more or less disowned him for joining Starfleet. Feels so damn proud of him for standing up the their parents like that.
Reunites with his brother after years of separation.
It’s rocky at first, but after both being disowned they’re all the family the other has left now, and they both do really care about each other.
Spock doesn’t understand Sybok’s choices, but he doesn’t need to understand them to respect them; Sybok is clearly still exercising some degree of control over himself, he even still meditates, he’s just controlling himself less, and differently, and his mind is more at peace than it’s ever been before. Sybok doesn’t really understand Spock’s continued dedication to logic either, but he respects it too, because clearly it still means something to Spock in a big way.
They make peace with each other, and their differences, and with the fact that their parents and society have rejected them. That Sybok did everything “wrong” and Spock did everything “right” and yet they both ended up in the same place; on Earth, with mom ignoring their calls, because she loved them both but she loves her husband more.
And ultimately he enrolls in Starfleet medical to become a ships counselor, because he still takes great joy in doing things he knows dad would hate, and because he wants to specialize in trauma and grief counseling and Starships need a lot of that, and because getting a new perspective on life from being around humans helped him a lot and he’s rejected a lot of philosophy that he found unhelpful but IDIC is something he still believes in; he wants to be around as many different ideas and perspectives as he can to improve himself and his practice, and Starfleet is a great way to do that.
Getting to follow his only remaining family into space is just a bonus.

TOS headcanon reacting to finding your nest in their quarters
Ostaran!reader (I mean the implication of nesting is kinda fem, but no pronouns or real description used for reader, so take it as you will)
Jim
Losing his mind
Like OMG, You put your nest in his room?!?!
Loves it so much
can’t believe you feel comfortable enough to put one so near his bed
tries so friggin hard not to even breathe in its direction
if you invite him to snuggle in it he will die
if you let him, he’ll start collecting you more blankets and pillows and things
like you’ll come to your new nest and find a new pile of materials near by
Spock
Honoured, but a little put off by the fact that you made it right in the doorway
Still won’t move and avoids stepping in it like the plague
will ask very kindly if you might move it to a more convenient location
would even help you to move your nest if you allow it, otherwise he’ll just read his book and let you do your thing.
the internal mushy feelings are real though
like won’t let anything happen to your nest at all
if you invite him to snuggle in your nest he will await your explicit instructions so as not to mess it up
Might start brining you little pieces for your nest that you express any interest in
Bones
Okie dokie
Doesn’t mess with it, but won’t bring it up unless you do first
it if you wait too long to bring it up he’ll look at you over the edge of the bed with a raised eyebrow as you snuggle into your nest
“Did you wanna join me?” He just shakes his head, “not what I meant,”
his words do not however match the action that is instantly plopping into the nest with you
he won’t go super out of his way to bring you more material, but he does think your nest looks a little sparse so if he sees something he thinks you’ll like he’ll get it for you.
he also definitely leaves little snacks next to your nest for you.
seriously, you accumulate a whole stash

S2 episode 26 (Assignment: Earth)
- 🎵Gotta go back in time 🎶
- Guy with a cat. Probably the best thing to randomly beam aboard
- Bones gets so worried so fast
- SPOCK PETTING A CAT
Tumblr media Tumblr media
- I like how the doors open just enough to let the cat in
- wtf is up with that vault door portal mechanism? No other show would do that, especially not new trek
- I like that the computer is sassing this guy
- That is the most ridiculous hat they’ve given Spock
- I like Miss Lincoln…“Very Groovy.” Omg I love her
- he just appears in a government base petting his cat
- OH SHIT THEY BEAMED THE POLICE UP
- goddamn Spock and Kirk in suits
- Spock in an increasingly ridiculous hat
- OMG MISS LINCOLN
- she’s talking to the cube. yeah I’d do that
- ya know I’d like a show that’s Lincoln, Seven, and the cat going through shenanigans
- “I have never felt so helpless.” Really, Kirk? There’s so many impossible situations you’ve been in, and this less lethal one takes the cake?
- So what I gather from this episode is they decided to make a rocket and now it’s basically not blowing up in space but rather in Europe and Asia, so they’re in deep shit.
- Kirk’s being an idiot
- “It is difficult to know which is best, Captain.” That’s so helpful Spock. So helpful.
- Kirk and Roberta squinting at the bright light while Spock and Seven just stand there
- SORRY?!? They just randomly show a goth woman sitting in a chair. And then I realized it was the cat (Isis)
- I think Roberta and Isis have really nice contrasts in costumes. I’d like to draw them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
- Spock and Kirk are practically finishing each others sentences
- The way they were talking I bet Lincoln and Seven would think, “What strange gay men from the future.” And each would mean it in a different way
- Can’t explain why but miss lincoln is now one of my favourite characters. Bring her back. Please.
Hello everyone. We’ve come to the end of another episode, and another season. I’d like to say thank you to everyone for whatever support you’ve given (‘specially comments, I love reading everything y’all have to say even if I don’t respond). I hope to see you again for the next season of thoughts.
On the next one :D

snw episodes rated by Una
in which Una is my unit of measurement, not that this is what she would think of the events
All from memory bc who has time
SPOILERS FOR EVERYTHING
1x01: she’s literally the catalyst for getting Chris off his butt and the whole episode. Barely in it but she did all the detective work for everybody. “Somehow I knew you would” with the little smile and “La’an!” in the softest voice immediately established both relationships and my abiding love for her. She’s literally driving the plot but still not there much; 6/10.
1x02: she shares some LooksTM with Chris. Chris was slightly subdued at one (1) dinner party and Una went something is deeply wrong. Chris is sad and Una tells him to live his gosh darn life. Pretty sure she flies the ship a bit. She’s here. Can’t complain. 6/10.
1x03: OOOOHOHO here we go. Whatever camera angle it is that shoots from the floor to watch people walk away and makes them look tall was excellently utilized. Girl was STRIDING everywhere. Hauled a grown man over her shoulder and was greeted with the shock and awe she deserved. Told her biggest secret (!!!!) to help the crew!!! bc she would sacrifice herself for them!!!!! also she googled her glowworm episode like it had not happened her whole life (which I will accept as a writer thing. but she really looked at a picture of someone glowing bc of an infection and went 😮). Girlie managed a whole ship of sedated/crazy people and did not let anyone jump into the sun/warp core. Had a deep talk with La’an and revealed more of their shared history. Stunning. 10/10.
1x04 another case of I can’t complain. As my favorite character I want her to be happy, but I will take some internal bleeding and other catastrophic injuries. As a treat. The sheer power of ordering the medical staff to give away her blood transfusion and then knocking herself out before they could argue. Unparalleled. Had no impact on the main plot but what she did do in her sphere of influence was important and exemplary. I’ll take it. 7/10.
1x05: back at it again with the b-plot but I AM HERE FOR IT. GIVE ME LA’AN AND UNA BEING GOOFY. Loved the death glare at Joseph so he would confess and how she pretended not to be huffy about her nickname. La’an went can we… play a game… and Una went YEs sounds educational. For science. The look of absolute shock and betrayal when La’an shot her and her little “ow.” “People are idiots. You’re fun.” La’an went lol my childhood was a bleak horror scape and Una went absolutely NOT I’m going to commit crimes to rectify this. I like people having wacky misadventures while the plot is plotting somewhere. 8/10.
1x06 Chris forgot her name. She had to leave so she wouldn’t verbally tear him to shreds in front of his crew. Most likely explanation. Where was she I miss her. 4/10.
1x07: she locked the pirates out of the ship!!! We love a competent first officer shooting people on her bridge. She shook her head half an inch and Spock went absolutely whatever you say. Chris was thrown to the floor in front of her and she crossed her arms and watched him get up. “We’re starting a mutiny.” "Someone's breaking the rules today." Legitimately appreciated her teamwork with Chris in planting the mutiny idea. Would love to see it again sometime. 7/10.
1x08: bow and arrow. She checked on Joseph after and I appreciated that they carried that through from her finding out about Rukiya before. Una was here but she wasn't Una. Also. If we're real she wasn't really there. I liked the eye shadow though. 5/10.
1x09: "you should really try the omelet." The breakfast scene is my favorite and in fact the only scene. Nothing else happened with Hemmer or Spock or anyone. Really short episode. I would have liked to have seen her face when Chris snapped the tongs. She tried to follow the shuttle to the surface with scans and Chris went nah babe we're fine. Let her do her job Chris. Breakfast scene 10/10. Episode 5/10.
1x10: notable by her absence. She checked on Chris and once again told him to live his life. She's not there in the future but I won't take points for that because Chris immediately went where is my bestie. I cannot function without my work wife where is she. Her arrest kick-started the series and for our cliffhanger she was arrested again. I'm sensing a theme. What will they incarcerate her for next and how will Chris break her out this time. I will always appreciate Chris going absolutely feral for his first officer/life partner. 9/10.
2x01: prison. She tells Chris not to be stupid and he goes don't tell me what to do *cough* I love you *cough* Not a strong start for our girl but I trust her to overcome. Once again Chris is going off on a mission to save her. Lost points for the brevity of her appearance and the weird black jumpsuit. 4/10.
2x02: Girl sat in a chair and watched her friends say nice things about her for days. I would shrivel up and die. Una looks teary. Her lawyer put some heat on a guy who said he would NEVER hire Una if he knew her real race and Una said that was too mean leave him alone. La'an confessed her feelings in public. Spock gave the whole courtroom a heart attack to make Una smile. Chris hugged her looking panicky. please don't go away again. Una looked at Chris like she wanted to kiss him or perhaps sip one milkshake through two straws. The whole episode is about how great she is. 15/10.
2x03: unfortunately for most of this episode she did not exist. Liked the professional and sassy attitude towards Pelia but I must reduce points for Una not existing. 2/10.
2x04: Una succumbed to a disease she should canonically be immune to. Fridged almost immediately. Chris said I need some good fighters and took his doctor instead of his super strong first officer who was familiar with the terrain. Una called Chris out on relationship nonsense like the og she is but this cannot repair the damage. Drove me to writing fix-it fic. -10/10.
2x05: Una is canonically one of the girls. She hangs out with some very specific junior officers including her emotionally constipated son and her traumatized daughter. She laughs very loudly and I like to think the writers are purposefully making her more open now that people know her genetics secret. Tells Mr. Spock how to be a Vulcan. Part of a lineup to talk to Spock and is a head taller than the rest of the line. All in all a great time. 9/10.
2x06: she yells at her former professor who is also thousands of years old. I would simply perish. "yoU HaVe CruMBs oN yOuR uNifOrM" Starfleet said we need someone to get this defunct and thus far unmanageable station up and running. Send Una. "Oh good, I was afraid I'd miss the speech." Rebecca Romijn note- she is nine inches taller than Carol Kane, but she manages to look/act a lot younger and smaller than normal. Pelia takes about 14 seconds to get Una teary eyed. "My final paper was METICULOUSLY researched." 8/10.
2x07: "That's ridiculous, we can't just 'Not Look.'" "Like... a p i n - u p p o s t e r?" Girl is constantly baffled the whole time. One (1) young man was unnerved by her and she went he knows how I die. She then winked at him and he almost had a stroke. We see a picture of her as she is idolized in the future. Excellent. Different flavor than 2x06 but still 8/10.
2x08: lots of Significant Eye Contact with Chris. She said if you don't get this ship where it's going asap I will revoke your command and drive us there myself. "Everyone is on their own journey." I feel like she knows Joseph murdered a man in sickbay but we don't know for sure. She's out here being a competent first officer and telling the captain how the crew is feeling. I like the reminder of her priorities. Chris is here to explore and it's Una's job to make sure he has a functional crew to do so. 6/10.
2x09: Una Chin-Riley, musical theater nerd, had the absolute time of her life and I am so happy for her. Girl JUMPED into that first song with much soulful pushing of buttons. "A surprisingly beautiful baritone." Chris asked Uhura the singer how musicals work and Una answered. Is feeling her feelings so much these days she started singing about her job. Waltzed through the halls with James T Kirk. La'an went I would like to not do this please and Una said feel your feelings. Fly away with me. Accept yourself. Love yourself. "You came in here hot. On fire. It's making me sweat." The whole ship is singing and La'an is making friends. This was the best day of Una's life. 1000/10.
2x10: Una volunteered for a dangerous forbidden mission to save her husband's gf and spent the whole time stalking around the bridge like a tiger or a mom looking for sales at Target and giving hopeful speeches. She did tell Spock his gf might be dead but if you want to look for her go for it champ. "ORDERS CAPTAIN" Chris is hanging on by a thread. Una is the thread. Not a great end if I'm honest but she did look fantastic walking around murderously. 5/10.

2nd Place Vote 2 (other final votes)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
propaganda and summaries are under the cut (May include spoilers)
Doctor Who (2005): 5.10 Vincent and the Doctor
Tw: is about Vincent Van Gogh so does deal with self harm, depression, and suicide (but not graphically, just this is what happened in his life and they acknowledge it)
The Doctor and Amy travel back in time to meet Vincent Van Gogh and face an invisible monster that only the painter can see.
Not the showiest or even the best episode of Dr Who, but the one that I can’t watch without tearing up at the end. Really well written and performed and generally gorgeous to watch as well. I first saw it when I was ten and the speech at the end has imprinted on my brain and given me a language to help understand the ups and downs that life brings. It’s just a lovely one.

Star Trek: The Original Series: 2.05 Amok Time
In the throes of his Pon Farr mating period, Spock must return to Vulcan to meet his intended future wife, betrothed from childhood.

I made the decision to be extra-judicious on deciding what constituted a spoiler for the new season of Strange New Worlds and I'm sticking with that.
But I have thoughts and I’ve spent way too much time thinking about them for a season and a half and I can’t hold them in anymore. So here you go.
Definite spoilers for episode 5 and everything before it under the cut. TL;DR at the very bottom of this way too long post.
Episode 5 was an absolute banger of an episode in terms of Hollywood entertainment value. But, and this is a big BUT, what the actual hell are the writers doing?
The Christine/Spock/T’Pring love triangle is tarnishing the gift that was given to Trek fans when Strange New Worlds was announced and it's becoming way too obvious not to comment on.
It’s maddening that they’ve decided to take a thirty second scene of a one-sided crush from the original series (Chapel confessing her love for Spock in The Naked Time) and turned it into a two-sided love affair that's part of a love triangle. It is, quite literally, derailing what is otherwise an incredible show.
I hear you asking… Seriously? Aren’t you being extreme? How could a consensual affair do that? Or.... You're a Spirk blog. Aren't you biased? Oh boy, I wish it were that simple. This is coming from a literal lifelong Trek fan who had Trouble with Tribbles memorized before I had an inkling what romance even was, and who - fortunately - was taught by my Trekkie father what made good writing.
The love triangle is not good Trek or good writing.
For reasons that likely have to do with Spock being arguably the most well known character in Star Trek canon (pop culture wise), the writers have chosen to focus on him. And what kind of storyline can they give us since Spock goes through a massive, decades long character arc in the original series and movies? (Spoiler alert, I answer that at the end and it's not a love triangle.)
For reasons that likely have to do with Peck’s appearance and natural charisma, they’ve decided to give Spock love interests - not just one but two.
Let’s ignore that Spock doesn’t show interest in either Christine or T’Pring in the original series. Really, that’s the least of the problems and easily explained away.
Where the problems arise are two fold - Spock’s emotional journey and the minimization of two strong female characters to love interests.
Spock’s emotional journey - As great as parts of this episode were (looking at you, Amanda), what it achieved was Spock coming to terms with his human side in a way that the Spock we know from the original series hasn’t accepted. It takes original series Spock until The Motion Picture (perhaps not until after The Voyage Home), to be comfortable in being both human and Vulcan. So the ground Spock gained in this episode? Strange New Worlds, if it continues as part of the prime timeline, can only result in character regression for Spock. As a fan of Spock in all iterations, that regression will be a heartbreaking and horrible way to end a hopeful show.
Christine and T’Pring as love interests - Dear god, can these women exist without being defined by a man please? It’s 2023. This shouldn’t be something female characters have to ask for. Sure, there was more about Christine in this episode, but her arc still revolved around Spock. And not only that, but we got the Korby name drop in this episode (her future fiancé). I'd love to think that this isn't headed in a direction where Christine will hook up with Spock then he’ll pull away and she jumps ship to Korby only to be defined again by a man. But for fuck's sake, this last season and a half hasn't given me much hope. Jess Bush is amazing as Christine. Is it too much to let Christine be her own woman? And T’Pring? I adore T'Pring way more in Strange New Worlds than I expected to. So, please, help a Vulcan woman out. T’Pring is already relegated to nothing in the narrative after Amok Time.  If there’s going to be an insistence on bringing her into the story can she please not be defined by Spock then Stonn? I'm BEGGING the Strange New Worlds writers - let these characters and actors shine as fully realized women.
But the larger problem is that this single decision for a love triangle has not only fated these three characters to regression and minimization - IT'S DIMMING THE POSSIBILITIES FOR EVERYONE.
When Strange New Worlds was announced, there were so many possibilities. A whole new part of canon to be explored and expanded. NEW CHARACTERS, NEW PLACES, NEW MORAL QUANDARIES, NEW EXPLORATIONS.
But we only get 10 episodes a season, right? Not the 26ish we got with the original series, The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager, and Enterprise. (Discovery, I'm looking at you and weeping too.)
So, why are the writers insisting on episodes focusing on an unnecessary love triangle when they could be doing this:
Uhura - Hello? SHE'S RIGHT THERE AND CELIA IS INCREDIBLE. The original series is notorious for brushing Uhura under the rug and other people can speak way more intelligently on Uhura meta than I can. But, I mean, she didn't even have a canon first name until 2009. So. Yeah. Good news, Strange New Worlds can change all of that. Build her history, show us her successes, her fears, her failings, glimpses into her past. Give her a chance to have a dalliance with the "alien of the week." Uhura is a beloved character for so so so many wonderful reasons. Give us the stories about her that deepen that love.
Erica - Oh, Erica. My beloved Erica. Paramount PR keeps saying that last week's episode was "Erica's Big Moment" and if it truly was her biggest moment of the season, then I weep for her and Melissa Navia. All we learned in that episode was that she's Erica Ortegas and she flies the ship (and, well, that Navia has a depth in her they haven't let her show with Erica so far). Erica does pilot and flies really goddamn well, but we already knew that. What about her time in the Klingon War? What about her family? Her friends off the ship? What was it that either made her determined to become the best pilot or that happened in her past that inspired her to become that pilot? How does she feel about being on the Enterprise? How does she feel about soup or carpet or art? There's nothing, literally NOTHING, in future canon about her and right now her Memory Alpha entries for her life before Strange New Worlds is seven sentences. SEVEN SENTENCES. All of this for a fan favorite character. *sigh*
Sam - The potential for this character is limitless and all we've really gotten is him touching something he shouldn't have, being xenophobic to Spock, and that he doesn't pick up his dirty dishes. Seriously? We know more about Jim Kirk in Strange New Worlds and he's not even on the Enterprise or in the same timeline! When we rewatch Operation Annihilate, give us a reason to mourn with Jim. Make that episode a billion times worse because Sam is a character that we know and care about outside of being Jim's brother.
Pike - Okay, so admittedly, Pike is probably the most fleshed out character besides Spock in canon and they're not shying away from the future he knows is coming. That's been handled really well. And they've also done a great job of showing how much Pike cares. But, what makes Pike one of the "great captains" and how has his past turned him into who he is today (the canon pieces with his father have so much possibility) and what is he doing behind the scenes to fight for his crew and his ship? I feel like we got more of the "great captain" in Discovery than we've gotten in Strange New Worlds. And, dear god again with the "romance," can his love interest get a canon first name please? Hard to buy he loves her when he calls her Captain Batel even in his personal log.
Una - She was pretty much a canonical blank slate going into Strange New Worlds and they've done some incredible episodes with her, but I'd love to see her actually be the XO? Making that a question because she absolutely is, but we have yet to really see that in practice. The relationship between Pike and Una deserves so so much more screen time. Let them be captain and first officer. Explore Pike mentoring her, and give way more of her mentoring crew. Let her be more than Illyrian. What are the unique challenges she faces as the highest ranked woman and non-Human on the ship? Is she a fighter or a negotiator or some secret third thing? Does she have an intricate knowledge of some space anomaly or ship function that no one else on board does? What are her future goals and plans? I'm rambling now, but the point is that she's a character who disappears from canon after Strange New Worlds and she's the goddamn FIRST OFFICER OF THE ENTERPRISE. Let her be that until she isn't anymore.
La’An and M'Benga - Honestly, I'm not going to put much here for La'An because out of all the "new" characters in Strange New Worlds, La'An has been fleshed out the most. And, out of all the "barely exists in canon" characters, M'Benga is the same. But I'm listing them because they make my point. La'An and M'Benga are good examples of what happens when the writers focus on characters who either don't exist in canon or barely exist there. We know pieces of their backstory and their motivations. We know what keeps them up at night. Both actors have given performances that tie the audience to their characters emotionally. And yet, there's seasons worth of more material for both of them.
So. To come back to my original point - why are the writers focusing on a love triangle that tramples on canon and minimizes female characters when they are wealthy af with primo characters?
I mean, there are so many other ways they could have gone with Christine (making her bisexuality more than a one-off line, having her struggle with what happened on the Farragut, exploring her role during the Klingon War, family, friends, facing moral quandaries in her research...), and Spock (his relationship with Sarek, Vulcan rituals and practices we've never seen ((double parentheses here to emphasize that to us, as viewers, Vulcan *is* a strange new world and there's still a hell of a lot of Vulcan stuff that's veiled in mystery)), and MICHAEL ((remember Michael, his sister, who got a one line mention in the first episode then nothing?? Yeah, that Michael)), Spock's grief over losing Hemmer and Michael so closely together, etc...). Poor T'Pring is pretty much relegated to love interest and plot device at this point unfortunately. Instead of the love triangle route, they could've cut the sex scenes and made her a cool, calculating advisor to Spock and the Angel/Sybok plotline could've still happened. But alas, was not meant to be.
I've written a lot of words and taken up way too much of my day with this, but I seriously couldn't hold it in any longer. Look, I love Strange New Worlds, but I also seriously grieve for the show that it could've been and I seriously hope it will become that show in future seasons.
Strange New Worlds is gorgeous, the sets and special effects are A+, the actors are all pretty too and know how to command a scene. There's a lot to work with. But let's not forget that the original series was put together with styrofoam, glitter, and a prayer and it birthed this 60 year franchise. What kept people coming back to Trek were the relationships and a found family working together to explore, not a forced love triangle.
TL;DR
The insistence on the Christine/Spock/T'Pring love triangle is dooming all of their characters to massive character regression and minimization *and* cheating us out of learning about and loving the characters who are practically unknown in canon.

Note
I can’t get enough of that alternate universe we glimpsed in Strange New Worlds s2e3 Tomorrow and Tomorrow where Vulcan Captain Spock requests that United Earth Fleet Captain Kirk help fight the Romulans (and Kirk says no cuz they don’t want to fight on two fronts).
Someone please write smut for them. 🙏 No mental trauma, just a sexy meet cute. Maybe it’s an accidental bond. Maybe pon far or sex pollen or sheer magnetic attraction. Maybe an alliance sealed by marriage. You decide! Let them bang, please and thank you!
omg i love that episode, that would be an awesome story.

Star Trek Las Vegas 2023
It's been almost a week and I finally typed up my convention experience! I'm not going to go into the 2600+ word level detail but there are certain moments I really want to share. I'm wholly hyperfixating on Ethan, so I'm sorry I didn't get more of Anson's thoughts and comments!
I talked with Anson Mount once and Ethan Peck twice. Both of them are extremely kind! I told Anson that Hell on Wheels is one of my all-time favorite shows and finding out he was involved with "a certain show we can't name" made me so happy. He kind of did an eyebrow thing and said, "You can talk about the show," and I laughed. Obviously, I'm not the one on strike!
With Ethan, I showed him a Spock playing cello piece of fanart, and told him I also play cello. We talked about that for a little bit. My second time meeting him, I asked a question I had intended for his panel with Anson: what is a moment you might have spontaneously erupted into song that you're comfortable sharing? He replied very quickly that it would probably be a situation where he's ribbing his friends.
Random things from Anson and Ethan's panel on 8/6/23
-Ethan was all over the place as a child. His father gave him a rock that said "focus."
-Ethan claimed he only learned to act "like five years ago."
-When Anson gave Ethan compliments, Ethan thanked him and hugged him. When Ethan gave Anson compliments, he mentioned SNW by name and heavily regretted his lapse in the strike protocol.
-In response to a fan question, Ethan said "The Umbrellas of Cherbourg" is his favorite musical.
-In response to a fan question, Anson said he eats "whatever the fuck I want." Ethan added pretty much the same, but he really likes candy.
The next two I wrote down verbatim from my videos.
A fan asked about what they hope would remain after losing their memories.
Ethan: So the question is… you lose your memories, so what are you? (Pause). Huh. (Fan apologizes). No, that’s a great question! So, we all experience ourselves experiencing, right. There’s no singular awareness, there’s almost two. There’s the thing, the construct that interacts with the world, Ethan, for instance. And then there’s something in my that experiences Ethan experience. So maybe that other perspective, that awareness deep inside that seems to observe Ethan experiencing, that might be what’s left. And would hopefully be amused and continue to be thrilled, and surprised by the things that happen, right. I think it’s a wonderful goal to be present in the moment, so maybe it would be something like that.
A fan asked about organizations they're part of.
Ethan: …And they are working to restore the California wetlands, which is a very important agricultural space and um, you know, I’m still working to become better educated on how exactly they do it, but they work with an enormous team of biologists, and a lot of water has been pumped out of these natural aquifers in California. And it has compressed the soil so when it rains, they call it a hard pan, the water just runs off and there are floods and then droughts. So they are working to restore those underground water vaults, essentially. It’s an amazing organization. River Partners.org. Hopefully I’ll be working more formally with them upcoming. I think it’s just a really– you know, I’m a California, my father is, my grandfather (people cheer) (Ethan makes a laughing “chaaa” sound) I guess it’s something to applaud. I love California. It’s affecting my immediate geography and my home. And they’re working really intelligently to fix this problem which has major effects. You now, there’s a lot of produce that comes out of California to the rest of the country, a lot of water that comes from California to other parts of the country as well. So, check it out. Furthermore, I’m hoping to work more with JPL actually, Jet Propulsion Laboratories, in Pasadena. Because I want to, if I can, help spread interest in rational thinking (laughs). (can’t understand). And it’s a natural fit, you can use your imagination as to why.
Random things from Zachary and Ethan's panel on 8/6/23
Both Zachary and Ethan seemed absolutely thrilled to be on stage together.
According to Ethan, they hadn't ever met in person, and had spoken only briefly. Ethan said, "This is tripping me out."
Zachary talked about losing his father at a young age. Ethan shared feeling emotionally unsafe in certain circumstances as a child, and how he felt the need to intellectualize or tamp down those vulnerable emotions. Zachary said, "Similar!" Both referenced doing a lot of work (Zachary specifically said therapy), to counter these tendencies.
Zachary asked Ethan if he's done any stage work. Ethan confessed to being terrified of live audiences, which elicited a chuckle from the audience. Ethan added that because of this fear, he should probably do it.
One fan in line to ask a question ended up getting a free photo op with the two of them because she said she couldn't afford it!
That same fan asked about their hobbies. Zachary talked about plants and how he not only wants to keep them alive now, but propagate them.
Ethan: I started sailing lessons this year.
Zachary: That tops plants.
Ethan: I don’t know about that, plants are incredible. I hope it’s (sailing) something I can do as I age.
Zachary: Were you nautical?
Ethan: No (chuckles). Not at all.
Zachary: Any interest or exposure to that before?
Ethan: No, not really. I’d been sailing once or twice but it’s funny, I kind of hate the beach. I don’t actually hate it. I hate sand, I hate sand being in my bed. That’s the main thing. It’s hard to avoid. I like looking at it from either the shore not in the sand, or on a boat.
Zachary said many positive things about the ST fandom. He also shared how important his relationship with Leonard Nimoy was. That Leonard passed the torch to him, and now he gets to pass it to Ethan.
IT WAS ALL AMAZING.

since snw s2 is over, i want to recap some of my favorite moments from this season because it was so good to me:
neera ketoul being a badass lawyer who i want to be like when i graduate law school and pass the bar soon. seriously, being a law student and seeing a black female lawyer in my favorite sci-fi show where i don’t expect much law-type stuff was so exciting for me.
human!spock— literally just everything about him. he was so cute and watching him grapple with human emotions in a more intense and upfront way without being able to keep them at bay as well as normal. and him being able to tell his mother how much he loves and appreciates her, and speaking of that..
amanda grayson making an appearance in this season was such a treat. she’s so beautiful and graceful and she loves her baby boy so much. it was wonderful to see her coming to his aid and then discovering that he was temporarily human.
jim & la’an falling in love in the alternate universe. even though it broke my heart in the end, it was so beautiful to see la’an letting her guard down and being open with jim and trusting him and falling for him. it was truly a wonderful little love story.
jim and uhura becoming friends because as i stated previously, their friendship was done perfectly and it really showed how jim is just a good guy who cares about helping others, which is why he’ll make such a good captain who is worthy of following.
pike hugging una, hesitantly at first because he was so relieved that her trial went the way it did. their relationship is so good because they work so well together but also have this personal connection that is essential to things running smoothly on the enterprise.
uhura’s song + saving the crew in the musical episode. i got chills and i cried and i just loved uhura being the star for the moment, which really showed how important she is to the crew now and will continue to be in years to come.
scotty!!!! i didn’t see it coming but i was so happy that they introduced scotty in the finale. martin quinn was great casting and i feel like the essence of scotty’s character was captured well. i can’t wait to see more of him.
i grew to love dr. m’benga so much more this season and he was extra sexy, starting with he and chapel fighting klingons in the first episode which was hot let’s be honest, and then there being more focus on him and his trauma from the war, a slight thirst trap in the shower, but showing that despite the fact that he can kick ass when needed, he chooses to be a person that heals rather than hurts others. a truly great and interesting character.

Handshakes as rebellion: Star Trek Discovery thoughts
So I’m watching Star Trek: Discovery (finally) and I just watched the episode where Sarek nearly dies and keeps going back to the moment Michael was supposed to be admitted to Vulcan Science Academy, and at the end she’s pushing to be more human and reintroduces herself to Ash Tyler with a handshake and a smile. Up until this point she’s been very no to handshakes cause Vulcan raised, and while it’s not logical, it is fun to imagine what her hand thought process is.
Star Trek loves to back track the Vulcan hand shit they built in, ya know to make Spock and Kirk less in love, but it’s there and Michael’s whole resistance/aversion to handshakes is so stark. Like you could argue she grew up with touch telepaths so it’s just polite to not touch hands, but touching hands is also an intimate thing (See Vulcan kisses) for Vulcans, that the mind tends to wander.
After learning her Dad (fuck you Sarek, blood or not, that’s your daughter you fuck ass) basically did a big betrayal, and then nearly let himself die rather than show her, AND LET HER THINK FOR YEARS THAT SHE LET HIM DOWN, one of the first things she does (after giving Sarek what I like to call, the oldest daughter shake down), is go talk to the new cute boy and offer to shake his hand again with a smile.
If we’re talking text that was definitely a rebellion for Michael. She’s shed some of her Vulcan conditioning because it doesn’t serve her healing process, she realizes now that her and Sarek were never going to live up to what the other wanted from them, and she’s embracing her humanity.
But if we’re just little gremlins for a second it looks like Michael went up to a cute boy and asked to make out after her dad almost died.
It’s fun to imagine, in a cracky sense, Michael holding hands with boys in her teens and Sarek finding out and giving lectures about propriety and shit. Amanda walks in from picking up Spock from school and the vibes are tense, Spock immediately knows whats up because he’s the one whose been keeping look out for Michael (idk if that’s accurate to them yet but I hope it is) when she sneaks off and meets with idk Salvir, the neighbors son who she really thinks is boring but has nice hands.
Amanda hears what the problem is tries not to laugh but truly thinks this is dumb, and can’t help but be brought back to her own dad chiding her about going around with that Vulcan boy (they were full grown adults, but still) and how it looks unseemly. And she says as much and Sarek goes green, and Michael and Spock are watching and he drops it. Michael doesn’t hold hands with Salvir anymore…she holds hands with Chu’lak, who lives two roads over and studies at home so Sarek never finds out.

It’s All Coming Back to Me Now (Spock x Female Reader)
Version 1
Word count: 1,067
A/N: this takes place after Spock returns to the Enterprise after coming back to life. Reader is his wife, and is exhausted from trying to help him remember their life together, and contemplates divorce. I have 2 versions, one where Spock is more calm to the news, and one where he is slightly more confrontational(no violence don’t worry).
T/W: slight smut at the end, 18+
Tumblr media
Y/n: My heart was conflicted at the thought of divorcing my husband. On the one hand, I wouldn’t have to deal with the stress of him not remembering our life together. However, on the other hand, I was devastated to lose my T’hy’la. I knew that I was being illogical and letting my human emotions get the best of me, but I was tired of crying. I cried when Spock died, I cried when he came back, and I cried when I showed him our family photo album.
Suddenly, the doorbell to our quarters chimes. “Come in,” I say.
Spock walks in. “Hello, wife,” he says, voice monotone, almost sad.
I reply simply, “hello, Spock.”
He sits down on a chair across from me. “I have overheard that you have been thinking of a koon’ut’kal’if’fee. May I ask why?” He asks.
I swallow hard. How can I tell him my reasoning without upsetting him? Even though he was still half Vulcan and half human, his human side was more dominant since he was resurrected. “Honestly, Spock, I’ve just been struggling with this. I know you can’t help that you can’t remember anything, but I’m having a really hard time telling you all of our memories. I know I should be grateful that you are alive, which I am, but I’m just having a hard time accepting things how they are. I-I’m sorry.” Tears well up in my eyes.
His expression softens. “Please, do not be sorry for how you feel. If this is really what you want, I can get in touch with the Vulcan council tomorrow. I just want you to be happy.”
Happy… that broke me. Would this really make me happy? At the current moment, I can neither live with or without Spock. “C-can I have some time to think before we make any decisions?” I ask.
“Of course. I would not want to make a decision unless you are certain,” Spock simply replies.
“Good.” I throw on my jacket. “I’ll probably be out late, so don’t wait up for me.” Maybe I can clear my mind on the observation deck.
—————————————————————
Spock: Y/n was right in saying she would be out late. At around 22:00, I decide to head to bed. Yes, I was saddened by the possibility of divorce, for I had gotten used to having her around. Wether or not I had any previous memory of her, I still found her very pretty and kind.
Sleep comes easy at first, but then becomes littered with vivid dreams. The first dream, y/n and I are stuck on a foreign planet, and are forced to share a sleeping bag to keep warm. Her small body fitting like a puzzle piece against my chest.
In the next dream, I’m experiencing Pon Farr. Y/n mates- makes love- with me, giving me her virginity. I am filled with an excitement and love I have never felt. Y/n looking like a beautiful goddess, I wish this dream would continue.
Finally, a bitter dream fills me. Y/n is pounding on a glass wall, crying and repeating my name. I soon realize this is my death, risking my life so that everyone aboard the Enterprise would be safe.
“I remember!” I wake up in a gasp. I had not just experienced dreams, but in fact, memories. Y/n, she is not only my wife, but my Ashayem. It’s all coming back to me now.
I jump out of bed, and run to y/n’s room. I knock on her door and wait. After a moment of no response I knock again. The door opens, revealing a sleepy y/n.
Y/n: “Spock, it’s four in the morning. What do you want?” I ask, rubbing sleep from my eye.
“Ashayem, sit with me,” he says, leading me to the bed.
I obey, and sit on the bed, asking, “ what’s this about?”
“I remember,” Spock says.
“Remember what?” I ask.
“Ashayem, I remember everything,” he states. His voice sounding more like his old self.
Could it be true? Could I really have my husband, my logical, Vulcan dominant husband back?
“Okay, what names did we have picked out when we decided to have children?” I test him.
“We decided on T’Ral, if we had a son,” he begins. For a daughter we agreed on Sh’vha.”
“Alright,” I breathe. “Where were we the first time we made love?”
I could see the slightest smirk on his face, the first smirk I’ve seen since before he died. “We we’re on Vulcan, of course. I was experiencing Pon Farr. I risked death or you risked losing me to my betrothed if we did not mate. You were willing to give me your virginity and be my bride just so that I wouldn’t die. For that I am forever grateful… no matter how illogical it is for me to feel such way.”
“Oh Spock!” I hug his neck. “You really are back!” A tear falls from my cheek. “Oh, T’hy’la!”
Spock: I gaze deep into her eyes, and I allow myself some vulnerability. “Oh, Ashayem,” I take her hand in mine, with a passionate Vulcan kiss. I have longed for her touch for too long. Y/n leans in to share a human kiss, that is just as passionate. The combination of both kisses fills me with a deep longing. It had been a long time since y/n and I had been intimate, and I could tell she was longing for me just the same.
Y/n undresses for me, and I do the same for her.
“Are you ready for me, Ashayem?” I ask, climbing on top of her.
She nods, “ just as ready as the first time we made love.” She smiles and kisses me.
I slide inside her, knowing that she will always be my beautiful bride, my Ashayem.
We share the most passionate night of love making we have ever experienced, when we are interrupted by our alarms going off.
Y/n gasps, “I forgot I had duty today!”
“Do not worry, Ashayem. You get cleaned up, and I’ll tell the captain you cannot make it today, and I shall spend the morning cuddling with you, just like we used to,” I reply.
She kisses me once more. “You’re the best Vulcan husband a woman could have.”
“And I suppose I must be the happiest Vulcan alive,” I reply, hooking my fingers with hers.

spones - older fics recs
seeing that people are interested in older fics, let me link some more that are not on ao3 but on personal websites (sometimes the formatting is a bit... you’d better just copy it into some text editor in order to read it comfortably) and that were written prior to 2010, but mostly in early 2000s. It’s not all of them (of course), I’m just linking those I at some point in the past three years enjoyed and that are long-ish. They can be a bit dated and sometimes a bit weird. Most of them are mature to explicit. If you want more warnings, you can message me.
Diagnosis and Treatment of Ply's Disease (explicit-ish at the end) - it deals with a disease, obviously, so proceed with caution if it isn’t something you want to read. Mention of McCoy/OC(m)
The Prayer of St. Francis (E) - I haven’t actually read this one, but one day I want to. The summary is “the triumvirate as we know them”, but it’s spones flavoured. And it’s spones who are bonded. It spans the series up to Spock’s death.
The author’s page in case you wanna read other fics by them.
Nets in the Wind - mirror!spones, has Sybok, set after Spock kills Kirk, in case you mind. It’s a bit open ended.
The World Bewitched - mirror!spones, interesting world building imho
The Other One (E) - “After the encounter with the Mirror universe, both men have some problems they have to deal with.” (I actually don’t remember this one, but I have it saved... but don’t judge me if it’s weird; read the author’s notes) sequel Sugar Magnolia. These were written in 1998.
On Vulcan genomic engineering and love - this one though is a bit weird (proceed with an open mind), but the premise is quite interesting - McCoy becomes a half-Vulcan (I think this was actually the only fic I’ve read with that theme). “Spock has wanted for a long time to become fully Vulcan and finally devices a formula to allow him to manipulate his genetic structure to do just that. But in a freak accident, he injects McCoy with the formula, causing the Doctor to become half-Vulcan. Now with pon farr on Spock's heels, he must help the doctor learn to deal with his Vulcan half, while the two of them both try to live with their feelings for each other.” some hints at McCoy/Vulcan OC(m)
My Little Town - takes place after TUC, I’m personally very fond of this one for some reason. It has a completely different background for McCoy than what’s common. “McCoy’s mother just died, and McCoy goes to deal with the house. Spock tags along.” McCoy’s parents had a huge age gap, so if you’re bothered by it, maybe don’t read it.
stories by Tempest - Blackbird has trans!McCoy, Yon t'Ashaya - McCoy and Spock both serve on a Vulcan ship, Spock goes into pon farr [these two fics are what stuck with me after reading them three years ago, but the author has a lot more]
now you can also go through this list, but a lot of the links are broken, some can be accessed through wayback machine, some can’t.
and then you can also look through the Spiced Peaches list, which has fics from 2005 and up. Just in case you’ve never heard of the online spones zine.
---
also a bonus tos!mirror!mckirk because why not. It’s a wip, unfortunately, but it’s still worth it because it’s tos!mckirk~ And like most other mirror verse fics on this list, it isn’t as dark as what’s written these days. It’s actually pretty tame. It’s by the same author as The World Bewitched and Nets in the Wind above.
The Getting or the Having & Dust - “In the Mirror-Universe Kirk finds out that his counterpart has a sexual relationship with McCoy. This makes him thinking things over.”

Logos and Pathos (Book 2) Chapter Twenty-Eight
Spock x Empath! Reader
Chapter Twenty-Eight: Emotions Revealed
Summary: Spock and the Enterprise Crew work against time to save (Y/N) from the evil empaths
Mouse Note: Thank you all for all the support on this book! I hope you guys enjoyed this final chapter. You guys have really made my day and made me so happy seeing that even in such an old fandom that people are still out there loving Spock, and I'm so thankful for the opportunity to work on my writing with such a supportive audience. You guys are the best! I can't wait to see you either in the next installment of this series or on another series of mine.
As illogical as it was, Spock could have sworn his heart stopped when (Y/N) collapsed to the ground unconscious. In an instant, he was fighting towards them, even as the Novisans forced pain through him. Every Vulcan and human instinct within him demanded he get to his t’hy’la’s side and protect them.
            “Keep him down!” ordered Caesarius.
Honoria turned her powers on Spock as well, and he gritted his teeth as he was forced to his knees by the twists of pain coursing through him. Spock fought against the Novisans, but with their powers enhanced through (Y/N)’s, he too was reduced to pain. He and the landing party struggled valiantly, but they were subdued.
“Take them to the jail. Ursula, Paschalis, keep watch!” ordered Honoria.
Spock, Kirk, Bones, Uhura, and Chekov were dragged to the prisons and locked into a cell. Finally, they were released from their pain as the aristocrat empaths left to keep watch.
“Captain, what are we going to do?” cried Uhura. “We can’t let (Y/N) marry that madwoman!”
“It wouldn’t hold up in court, would it?” questioned Chekov.
“It doesn’t matter if it would or wouldn’t,” said Bones grimly. “They are able to manipulate people with (L/N)’s abilities, somehow, and with that, they’ll be able to get whatever they want. The marriage is just to create legal trouble if we try to help (L/N).”
“We have to stop it, then,” said Chekov forcefully.
“Yes, we do, but we have no phasers and can’t fight them,” said Kirk, pacing. “Bones, Spock, how can we stop them from using (L/N)’s favor? How are they even using it in the first place?”
“I suspect it has to do with the potentiate stones they wear,” said Spock, his voice clipped and sharp. His mind was running through every scenario, every possibility, every opportunity to help (Y/N). “It likely links the wearers’ psychic abilities together into a ‘locus’ they can all draw on.”
“So if we get that ring off (L/N)’s hand, the Novisans won’t be able to use their empathy?” asked Kirk.
“I don’t believe so,” said Spock, crossing his arms. “But getting to them does present an issue.”
Kirk’s eyes softened at the obvious worry and distress on Spock’s face. It was subtle, but Kirk was his friend and knew his habits well. Not to mention, he knew how Spock felt for (Y/N), so guessing what was going through his mind at that moment was easy.
“Spock, we’re going to save them,” said Kirk.
“Captain…You can’t know that for sure,” said Spock, his voice hoarse as logic dictated a possibility he didn’t want to admit.
“Yes, I can,” said Kirk, gripping Spock’s shoulders. “Spock, (L/N) is strong. They’re fighting right now. They’re pushing themself to their limits to get back to you. And I know you. You won’t rest until they’re safe. You won’t stop until they’re saved. Between your determination and their strength, there is no way you won’t make it. I know it. So, all we need to do, is get to them. They aren’t giving up, and neither are we.”
“No, Captain. We are not,” said Spock.
l
(Y/N) felt like they were floating. Their mind was a cloud, and they were just drifting along, completely at the mercy of the Novisans directing them. (Y/N) grasped at any bit of power they could find, but each time their consciousness breached the fog of blank emotions the Novisans were forcing into them, the gentry pushed them back.
The ring on their finger glowed sickeningly violet, like poison seeping into the very air around them. The purple contrasted starkly with their golden eyes, further demonstrating how out-of-place it was on them. The entire world was dictating the wrongness of the situation.
(Y/N) hated that they couldn’t do anything but watch themself be decorated in jewelry like a doll. Dafni and a new woman, Kleio, had to do their hair and prepare them for the wedding. (Y/N)’s heart broke for both women. They were forced to work by the empaths, manipulated just like (Y/N). If they could help the non-empaths, they would, but they were in the same position.
“Oh, you look lovely,” cooed Honoria.
(Y/N) wanted to cringe away from Honoria as her hand skimmed their face, examining them. It made them sick, and they wanted to lash out and scream that they weren’t a puppet, they were a person just like everyone else they used and tossed to the side. But (Y/N) couldn’t. Honoria’s power pressed down on them like an immovable weight.
“Kleio, Dafni, put them into their wedding dress,” ordered Honoria.
Of course, she’s just going to sit there and make sure I can’t break free, thought (Y/N) ruefully as Kleio and Dafni guided them to a closet.
They pulled it open, and (Y/N)’s stomach dropped as they saw the dress. It was beautiful, yes, but all it was to (Y/N) was a sign of the gilded cage they were being forced into. Every moment the Novisans’ control seemed to deepen in them. It was getting harder and harder to think freely as the fog of emotionlessness rolled over them.
            Spock…please…save me.
l
“Doctor, it is no use. The bars will not bend, no matter how much you try to force them,” said Spock, pacing back and forth.
Bones huffed and stepped back. “Well just because you are just ‘thinking’ and not ‘acting’ doesn’t mean I won’t.”
“I can assure you, Dr. McCoy, if there was a way to act, I would,” said Spock, clipped and annoyed.
The more logical and cold Spock became, the more worried he was. It seemed counterintuitive as a Vulcan, but that was the truth. And Spock was becoming dangerously logical as his concern over (Y/N)’s safety mounted.
“Let’s not start fighting.” Kirk sighed. “It won’t solve anything.” But even he was growing restless, and he wasn’t a patient man to begin with.
“But Captain, time is running out!” said Uhura. “We need to help (Y/N)!”
“The marriage could occur at any moment. Russian weddings take some time to prepare, but even this is starting to cut it close,” said Chekov.
“He’s right,” said a new voice.
The landing party whirled to find Elias standing before them. He had a platter of food in his hands, but he put it down as he approached.
“The servants are all talking about it. It’s going to start soon,” said Elias.
“You have to help us leave,” insisted Kirk instantly. “I know you’re afraid of the empaths, but (L/N) is kind, and she’s our friend.”
“The royal family will only grow stronger if you don’t help us,” said Spock, stepping forward. “It is in your planet’s best to help us.”
“We know,” said a second voice. Prince Regulus walked into the room. The landing party tensed.
“You! What the hell do you think you’re on locking us up and hurting (L/N)?!” cried Bones.
“It’s alright,” said Elias. “He’s not an enemy.”
Spock, Kirk, Chekov, and Bones blinked in confusion. Uhura, in her ever-present wisdom, stepped up. “Ah. I see.” She smiled.
“See? What’s there to see? Old Princey here is manipulating Elias!” said Bones.
Uhura sighed and put her hands on her hips. “Isn’t it obvious? They’re dating.”
Kirk’s head snapped to look at Elias and Regulus. “They’re…What?”
“We are,” said Elias, taking Regulus’s hand. “And that’s why we’re going to help you.”
“We’ve always hidden our relationship,” said Regulus. “The dichotomy of Novis, between empaths and non-empaths…it keeps us apart. I knew what my family would do to Elias if they found out. I thought…”
“We thought,” interrupted Elias, squeezing his boyfriend’s hand. He looked at Regulus. “Don’t put it all on you. We both agreed to this relationship, and we both decided to keep it a secret. For your safety as well as mine.” Regulus’s eyes softened as his love continued. “We didn’t think anything could ever change. We thought Novisan culture was the only one that could exist, that empaths and non-empaths had to live separately.”
“But seeing you all together,” said Regulus, “…it showed us things could be different. It showed us that empaths and non-empaths can live in harmony. The way my parents and their parents and every generation of Novis royals have ruled is wrong. There is another way. And I want to bring peace to Novis.”
“And that starts with saving your friend,” said Elias.
Regulus pulled a key from his pocket. “I managed to knock out Paschalis and Victorius. But the biggest threat is my family. They’re drawing on (L/N)’s power. They’ll be strong.” He unlocked the cell door, and the Starfleet Officers walked out.
“How are they using (Y/N)’s abilities?” questioned Spock.
Regulus gestured to his earrings. “Potentiate.” He sighed. “The truth is, although the aristocrats here on Novis are extremely proud of their empathic abilities, none of us are really that strong.” He nodded to Uhura. “It’s like you described: we can only really understand the strong emotions of people close to us. The potentiate we harvest from the Vitality Locus acts as a link between our abilities. It’s like a pool of power we can all draw on.”
“They added (Y/N)’s to it when Theresia forced the ring onto their hand,” realized Spock, crossing his arms.
Regulus nodded. “Yes. Without their power, my parents will be easier to handle. Still dangerous, but not like they are now.”
“So we just need to get the ring off of (L/N), like we thought,” said Kirk.
“Hate to say it, but how are we supposed to get near them while the royal asses still have (L/N)’s abilities at their disposal?” asked Bones.
“We could distract them,” said Chekov.
“You’d be running right into danger,” warned Elias.
“For (Y/N), I’d do it,” said Uhura determinedly.
“It’s possible that making them spread out their use of (L/N)’s power would weaken each of their individual abilities,” said Regulus. “Like stretching it too thin.”
“Alright, then. We’ll do it,” said Kirk. He looked at Spock. “We’re going to save them, Spock. We’ll distract the Novisans; you get to them.”
Normally, Spock would argue this plan was reckless and put them in too much danger. But when it came to (Y/N), all the usual rules went out the window. He just wanted his t’hy’la safe and back with him.
l
(Y/N) couldn’t quite figure out what was happening. Everything was fuzzy, faraway. Why were they in this room? Who was the woman standing across from them? What was happening?
They furrowed their brow—or, they tried to (or were they just imagining it all?)—as their head ached. (Y/N) couldn’t focus on the words floating through their head.
Something soft enveloped their mind. It lulled the ache, letting them rest in a cloud of numb uncaring. It whispered to them to let go, stop struggling, just go along with everything.
The remnants of (Y/N)’s mind tried to break the surface, but with every moment it was getting tougher. Their emotions were drowning.
l
“What the—How the hell did you escape?!” cried Ursula, her eyes widening as the landing party and Regulus approached. She raised a hand and furrowed her brow, clearly prepared to use the power she had to cause them pain.
Regulus was quicker. His earrings glowed, and he countered Ursula’s power. Narcissa attacked next, but Kirk threw her over his shoulder as Regulus blocked her psychic force. The two aristocrats were strong, but with the royal family monopolizing (Y/N)’s power, they were handled.
Bones threw the throne room doors open. Inside, the curtain was pulled to reveal the Vitality Locus, a large purple stone glowing with the amassed psychic power within. Spock’s hands curled into fists knowing (Y/N)’s empathy was trapped in it as well.
His eyes traced past the aristocrats gathered for the sham of a wedding to where (Y/N) stood on a dais before the Vitality Locus. His breath caught. They were beautiful. A golden gown floated around them, offsetting their golden eyes. They were a pure beam of light, the warm ray of sun he chased.
Their radiance was contrasted by the violet glow of the ring on their finger and the blank look on their face. The ring was a shackle; the emotionless expression sickeningly wrong on (Y/N). Spock felt a swell of emotion rise within him. He wouldn’t leave (Y/N) like this.
“Regulus! What do you think you’re doing?!” cried Caesarius, outraged at the interruption of the ceremony.
“What someone should have done years ago!” declared Regulus. “This is wrong, Father! Let the officer go, and we can figure out how to live peacefully!”
“This is our ticket to power,” hissed Honoria. “You will not mess it up!” She snapped her fingers. “Courtiers…handle these fools! Theresia, finish the ceremony!”
Chaos broke out. The royal family was proud enough to not let (Y/N)’s power leave their hands, which made their council weaker. The Starfleet Officers, motivated as Regulus supplied them with what little protection he could against the cruel empaths, pushed forward, fighting to help (Y/N). Unfortunately, the combined abilities of the Novisan gentry forced pain through them. Even Regulus was forced to his knees.
But Spock…Spock pulled his Vulcan strength and shielded his mind against their attacks. He could feel the pain trying to force its way in, but he was determined to get to (Y/N). His friends were counting on him, but more importantly, (Y/N) was.
“(Y/N)!” He surged forward and grabbed (Y/N) from Theresia. His brow furrowed as they didn’t react.
“Too late. I wouldn’t be surprised if all their emotions are gone at this point,” jeered Theresia. Her necklaced glowed, and pure pain jerked through Spock.
Spock’s hand curled into a fist, balling in (Y/N)’s gown as he gazed at them. Pushing himself through the agony, he reached for their face. Closing his eyes, Spock tried to sense their consciousness with a Mind Meld. His heart twisted and anger rolled over him when he felt…nothing. There was barely anything left, just twinges of emotions trapped within (Y/N)’s mind.
“(Y/N)…You must fight this,” said Spock. Nothing. No change, no response, nothing, nothing, nothing. They needed something strong to bring them back.
“Just let go! We win!” cried Theresia, her necklace blindingly bright. “You stupid Vulcan! You can’t help an empath!”
Spock gritted his teeth and narrowed his eyes. He wouldn’t let them win. He wouldn’t let them take (Y/N) away. “Yes. I can.” In one fluid motion, a final burst of strength against the psychic attack, Spock reached down, pulled the ring from (Y/N)’s finger…
            …and kissed them.
Spock poured every emotion he felt for (Y/N) into it. His hand intertwined with theirs, Vulcan and human kiss equally passionate. Spock made them feel all the love he had for them, for the warmth they had brought to him, for the light they were in his life.
            I love you, T’hy’la.
l
            I love you, T’hy’la.
A flood of warmth coursed through their mind. The cold emptiness of the fog was helpless against the pure light of love filling them. (Y/N) felt alive with the beautiful truth of the emotion filling them.
Their eyes opened to the world again. They could feel the sunlight on their skin, the softness of their clothes, the chaotic emotions around them. But so much more, (Y/N) could feel Spock. They could feel his hand in theirs, his lips, his love.
(Y/N) gripped his hand tightly, reached up with their other hand, and pulled them deeper into the kiss.
I love you, I love you, I love you.
(Y/N) pushed the love they felt for Spock into every moment. They could nearly cry with how strong everything was, how deeply their heart beat for him.
Spock and (Y/N) drew apart from each other, breathing deeply.
“Spock…You came…” They nearly sobbed for joy.
“I would not leave you,” said Spock. He spoke plainly as he always did, but the truth of his words were still significant.
(Y/N)’s brow furrowed. With Spock’s hand cradling their cheek, their minds were connected, and they could feel the Novisan empaths pressing pain down on him. (Y/N)’s hand curled into a fist. They stepped away from Spock and faced Theresia, who stared at them uncertainly, unsure of what they were planning.
(Y/N) knelt, picking up the fallen ring Spock had freed them from. Standing tall and straight, they glared at Theresia. “You tried to control me.”
The aristocrats and royal empaths froze as their voice rang out. Kirk, Bones, Uhura, and Chekov quickly grabbed their phasers back from Ceasarius, who had confiscated them when they were thrown in jail.
“I—We—We needed the power,” said Theresia.
“You want power?” (Y/N)’s head cocked, and their eyes blazed with golden light. “Here.”
(Y/N) held up the ring in front of them. Narrowing their eyes, they focused on the shard of potentiate. It shone with purple light before being taken over by gold. The aristocrats gasped as they felt (Y/N)’s pure psychic power run through them. The potentiate jewel shattered, unable to contain (Y/N)’s full strength. The Novisans flinched at the display.
            But (Y/N) wasn’t done.
The Vitality Locus shone gold behind them as their power built up again. The Novisan empaths grabbed their jewelry as they felt psychic energy build up.
“You steal your powers! You abuse your abilities! You lord empathy over others!” declared (Y/N). “This is a gift, and you’ve squandered it! You don’t deserve the power given to you!”
The Vitality Locus exploded into golden light. Each shard broke apart in the jewelry of the gentry. Each fragment left was dull, holding no more power to tie their abilities together. The Novisans were left with just what they were born with—weak empathy.
“Learn to use what you’ve been given,” said (Y/N), looking down at them. They were words of guidance, but a warning rested below the surface. (Y/N) had shown their power, and the Novisan gentry were afraid.
Their expression softened, and they gestured to Regulus and Elias, who was opening the door alongside other servants to see the outcome of the fight. “Look. There are ways for you to live in harmony.” Regulus and Elias held hands, gripping them tightly in comfort as all eyes turned to them. “We’re all people,” said (Y/N). “Empath or not, we all deserve respect. Let go of your prejudices, your fear of being seen as weak. They—” (Y/N) pointed at the men “—are stronger for their love.”
“We are,” said Regulus, looking right into his parents’ eyes. “I’ve never felt more self-assured or certain in myself than by Elias’s side. We can live in peace.” He looked around. “I want Novis to be a planet of harmony and joy. We can only have that if we learn to exist together.”
“But we’ve taken the first step,” said Elias. He gestured to the shattered Vitality Locus. “Yes, you won’t have the power you once had. But that’s for the best. It’s time for Novis V to change.”
“And we will change for the better,” said Regulus. He turned to Kirk. “Captain, I trust you’ll report that more Ambassadors and guides will be needed for Novis V? I want to start the transition to peaceful relationships to begin as soon as possible.”
Kirk smiled. “Of course.” He bowed playfully. “Your highness.”
(Y/N) relaxed. Regulus was taking charge. The Federation would send people to help with the transition. Everything was going to be alright.
l
“Are you sure you want to change out of that?” said Uhura as they walked back to their quarters for some well-deserved rest.
(Y/N) looked down at their golden gown. They chuckled. “Well, I don’t really think it’s regulation.” They paused before their door and glanced back at Spock, their gaze shy after what had happened between them. “What do you think?”
Uhura, realizing they needed a moment (she needed them to get together, finally), continued on. (Y/N) and Spock were left together.
“I…You remind me of old human paintings,” said Spock. (Y/N) cocked their head in confusion. “You are what my logic cannot explain. You are…art.”
(Y/N) breath caught in their throat. They had been called attractive many times and in many ways. Spock’s version was the best. “Spock…” they breathed, unsure of their words. “I…I don’t know what to say. Thank you.”
“You do not have to thank me for honesty,” said Spock.
“Then at least let me thank you for saving me,” said (Y/N). They shifted uneasily. “The Novisans…They were drowning me in emotionlessness.” They shivered. “I hated it.” Their gaze met his. “And you brought me back.”
“You would have fought your way out,” said Spock. “You demonstrated your power is quite formidable.”
(Y/N) laughed nervously. “I guess I did go a little crazy there.”
“Well, I cannot say it was particularly logical,” said Spock. There was something impish in his tone that told (Y/N) he was teasing them.
A full grin broke out on their face. “No, it wasn’t. It was pretty emotional, wasn’t it?”
“It seems emotions were necessary today,” said Spock.
“They certainly were,” said (Y/N). Taking a risk, they brought up what had happened. “Without them, you wouldn’t have saved me.”
“No, I wouldn’t have,” agreed Spock.
(Y/N) took a deep breath and burst out, “Spock, were those really your feelings for me?”
Spock’s gaze softened. “Yes. I apologize if they are unwanted, but I needed to bring your mind back. I was willing to try anything.”
(Y/N) burst out laughing. “You idiot!”
            “ ‘Idiot?’ ” questioned Spock.
“Yes, idiot. I’m in love with you, Spock,” said (Y/N). “I have been for a very long time.”
Spock’s heart could have stopped as emotions overwhelmed him. He cleared his throat, trying to remain composed. “Well, then, I suppose the next thing to do is to go on a date—”
            “Spock,” interrupted (Y/N).
            “Yes?”
“Shut up and kiss me,” said (Y/N) with the most adoring look in their eyes.
A small smile appeared on Spock’s face. For once, he didn’t think and just acted, pulling (Y/N) closed and kissed them. (Y/N) pressed two of their fingers against Spock’s. Pulling back slightly, (Y/N) leaned their forehead against Spock.
“I love you, Spock,” said (Y/N) with a wide smile and adoring eyes.
“I love you, too, T’hy’la,” said Spock.
            “ ‘T’hy’la?’ ” asked (Y/N).
            “Beloved,” translated Spock.
“I like it,” said (Y/N), curling their fingers around Spock’s.
“Good. I don’t plan on changing in,” said Spock.
“I wouldn’t have you change anything,” said (Y/N), leaning in to kiss him again.
            And Spock returned it lovingly.
Logos and pathos were opposites; the heart and mind were parallels, but (Y/N) and Spock were two parts of a whole.
