jody scheckter and his f1 career: a case study
how does one go from crashing every race to winning the world championship? ask jody scheckter, because that's exactly what he did in the 70s to eventually win the title.
his first foray into formula one was not very auspicious. he caused a massive 8-car starting accident in one of his first races (at silverstone) and was almost banned from racing altogether as a result. several drivers questioned his suitability for formula one (and this was made all the worse by the fact that he'd pretty much left all behind to move to england and pursue a racing career).
this encapsulates what he was all about as a '73 mclaren driver.
he continued this reputation when he crashed with françois cevert at the canadian gp in 1973. understandably, françois was not happy about this. his next race was watkins glen—and unfortunately we all know what happened there. after françois cevert's fatal accident, where jody was first on the scene, he rethought his driving ethos and refocused his aggression into speed and a renewed look at safety.
also of note: his fabulous helmet and sideburns.
in 1974 he joined tyrrell, a sad move considering that he was supposed to have partnered françois that year. instead, he became teammates with patrick depailler, and had a fairly successful partnership for a number of years. the one fumble: our deeply beloved six-wheel tyrrell, which was not deeply beloved by those who actually had to drive it. jody did score its only win!
i just can't help myself. anyway, the podium for the 1976 swedish grand prix!
in 1978, the maturity he'd gained as a driver led him to break away from the tyrrell team and join ferrari instead. he became fast friends with his new teammate, gilles villeneuve, and their partnership led him to the 1979 world championship, where he combined his natural attack with smart manoeuvers to win three races and snatch victory. he left formula one after 1980, having got what he wanted after a really, really wild ride in the sport.
he was also friends with george harrison and james hunt (here a rare picture where james is in fact wearing the most clothing of anyone in the shot).
so he really did it all: being a crashmaster extraordinaire, going through some grueling years in a cumbersome car, and winning a championship to top it all off. an inextricable part of that is the loss he experienced on the circuit, from his first season all the way past his retirement to 1982, and how that shaped his racing in an intelligent and more careful direction.

i get that pushing harder/blowing your nose actively makes a congested nose worse via increasing sinus pressure but not for me though. if i just keep blasting it will work and my nose will clear up for me. this is how im reaching heaven through violence.
