so um anyway jiang cheng canonically does not consider wei wuxian a servant—let alone “just a servant”—and does not treat him like one. idk where this idea came from but it is factually untrue.

in fact, jc repeatedly indicates that he thinks wwx’s station is on par with other gentry, that he likes the idea of being part of a pair with wwx, and even jokes with wwx, mocking the notion that wwx could be a servant.

after wwx was taken in, they were functionally raised as equals, and there is nothing in their interactions as youths that indicates or even hints that their relationship was master/servant instead of simply childhood friends.

and obviously wwx is not sect leader, so yeah, he is expected to defer to jc after the war, (and that’s not an inherently bad thing, that’s how leadership works) but jc lets him get away with SO much shit that Would Not Fly if wwx were a servant (or treated like one). if jc only regarded wwx as a servant, there is literally no reason to be as lenient as jc was with wwx’s loose canon tendencies.

i’m sorry, but there is simply no valid reading of their relationship where the dynamic of their relationship is master/servant. their relationship simply is not built on obligation, as much as they both try to act like it. this assumption undercuts a huge amount of context and motivation, leaving nonsensical character decisions and gaping plot holes. there is no mdzs unless they care about each other as individuals.

Imo, the thing about novel lwj is that he's literally written to be wwx' perfect half. That's his whole character. We don't have him morning his brother as others; we don't have him struggling with class power as others; we don't have him searching revenge for what he lost; we don't have him struggling with the knowledge that someone he dearly loves has killed someone else he also dearly loves. His function is loving and protecting wwx, being there without much past or problems for him. And that's what he does! He puts himself between wwx and every danger! still kind of insane to me that people talk shit about jiang cheng without fully understanding what he has been through so lets just understand what his mental state is like BEFORE canon begins:

born via a dysfunctional marriage to be the sect heir

father doesnt care for him, mother expects too much from him/everything he does is not enough

has his three dogs just kicked out randomly with no notice because of some kid he's never heard of by the father who never gave him love and/or attention

said father then favours this kid more than him, to the point that the entire world basically thinks that this kid is biologically your father's son as well, which causes even more family dysfunction

despite this still learns to love this kid as his unofficial brother

works his absolute hardest but is always second-best because his new shixiong is naturally talented

nobody appreciates the hard work he puts in at being second place despite the fact wwx literally doesnt work hard for it

masks his emotions with anger as a coping mechanism to minimise the amount of hurt he feels

ok great so now lets actually take all of the above and apply this mental wellbeing to canon events FROM HIS PERSPECTIVE (keep in mind this is literally what jc is seeing/experiencing because he DOESNT KNOW what the reader knows):

brother is off being the protagonist and getting in trouble and gets their sisters marriage ruined

comes home from a year away and then almost immediately has to go and be a hostage where brother continues his protagonist behaviour

gets trapped and nearly dies in a cave with a 400-year-old monster, is in charge of finding a way out and making sure everyone else escapes

brother and a guy who maybe hates him get stuck behind in the cave so now jiang cheng has to boost it home ON FOOT, without food, to get manpower to rescue them, which takes a minimum of a few days likely without any food or sleep

no appreciation or thanks for doing that since brother was more heroic and killed the 400-year-old monster

gets scolded by his father for being annoyed by this

parents immediately get into another fight about father loving wwx more than jc

because of the above shenanigans their sect is targeted next

tries to defend brother against being whipped to death and/or having his hand cut off by mother

witnesses his entire sect being burned and murdered

loses both his parents

decides to sacrifice himself to save his brother's life, instead of dying he is tortured and has his golden core melted

on top of his inferiority issues, the ONE THING he was expected to do was be the sect leader for the yunmeng jiang. the sect that no longer exists. he is now a sect leader with no sect and no golden core. no shit he wants to mcfuckin die

miraculously gets a new golden core but loses his brother

immediately plunged into a war and he's only like 17

spends 3 months trying to find his brother only for his brother to show up doing the Forbidden Magic and necromancy which is Super Disrespectful in their culture like holy shit what are you doing

brother refuses to use his sword in favour of the Forbidden Magics and kind of keeps undermining jc's orders as sect leader which makes jc look weak in front of all the other sect leaders when he's actively trying to rebuild their sect and be respected as a leader

fights a war for [handwaves] an amount of time, certainly a few years minimum, while watching his brother descend further into Unhealthy Behaviour but brother refuses to do anything or talk about it

ends up lowkey being a war hero

the other three great sects (of which there are now only four) swear brotherhood, leaving out ONLY ymj/jiang cheng, which, what the Fuck dude

is now a teenager who has lost his parents who now has to rebuild his sect from scratch with fuck all money, supplies, and support

brother, who promised to always be at his side helping, is not helping, and in fact is actively just getting drunk and being a nuisance and STILL REFUSING TO SAY WHY

entire cultivation world starts to turn on his brother who is now looking like a loose cannon bc he has Forbidden Magics that are Terrifyingly Powerful and also it has been proven that he does not give a fuck about jc's opinion since he's constantly doing whatever the fuck he wants

literally out of nowhere said brother decides to piss off everyone, start fights, and then KILL JIN GUARDS at a camp and MAKE OFF with like fifty people who are part of the family that he just fought a war against and were responsible for slaughtering his family/sect

go to the terrifying haunted mountain where wwx and the wen remnants are and sees that he's essentially starting a new family with a kid and crops, doesn't seem to care that jiang cheng is still trying to keep the ymj afloat and look like they have any strength

brother is still doing Forbidden Magic and refuses to explain why, and now says he'll secede from the ymj so his bad reputation doesn't reflect on jc like he HASNT BEEN DOING THAT THE WHOLE TIME

so now shixiong wants to just abandon jc completely after jc has lost his parents, had to rebuild everything from scratch, while ignoring the promise he's made their whole life? ok fuck you

jc also can't defend him in public because that would turn the ymj into a target and please keep in mind he is a teenager who was expected to do this ONE THING by his parents and he has poured his heart and soul and blood and tears into rebuilding the ymj and they are So Vulnerable Right Now

by the way did i mention this was done via an entirely unconsented experimental surgery

and now the brother of the doctor who did the unconsented experimental surgery is ?? mad at jiang cheng about it ???? like he was supposed to KNOW ABOUT THIS when wwx was KEEPING IT FROM HIM ON PURPOSE???

Honestly, it looks like at least after the Guanyin Temple, WWX is actively resisting understanding that JC still cares about him. JC takes a Stab to the chest for him, asks him why he didn't keep his promise & stay by his side, has a full breakdown over his sacrifice, gives him back Chenqing that he's kept for all these years, gets angry at JGY on his behalf, JGY spells out for WWX that JC is angry because he feels WWX was wronged, and that JC must have come to rescue not only JL, but WWX too, & targets WWX in the middle of the fight, fully trusting that JC would rush to his rescue, and he does. JC even thanks LWJ and holds a fallen WN. & I think one reason that WWX might be subconsciously fighting against getting all these clear signs and still avoiding JC might be that as much as he thinks he can’t handle JC’s wrath and blame and wants him to forgive him, he actually can’t afford JC’s forgiveness and unconditional love. Because he still blames himself for JZX’s and JYL’s deaths and even the massacre of Lotus Pier. & JC is the only one who has the right to be angry at him for all of these. He and JL. JC’s the only one who knew JYL & genuinely cared about her. WWX doesn’t think he deserves JC’s forgiveness. In fact, he looks terrified of it. Just look how quickly he turns from JC after thanking him for giving Chenqing back to him (Chenqing that after all these years still sounded like he had first used it. A very telling sign of JC's affection in itself.) Even though even JL who was watching from afar could say that JC had something to say to WWX:

JC is an outward force blaming him and being angry at him. WWX can tell him that he doesn’t know what to say to him when asked for an explanation, he can tell him that it’s all in the past. Let it go. he can beat the shit out of him. He can apologize to him and be judged by him. He can avoid him. Pretending that by ignoring him he doesn’t have to face the past. JC blames WWX and is harsh to him so WWX doesn’t have to fight himself and blame himself all the time. post-resurrection WWX keeps misinterpreting everything JC says and is unwilling to listen to him and get the hints JC keeps giving him about how he just wants WWX to come back home & interprets everything JC even doesn’t say in the worst ways he can bc it’s not so much about JC than it’s about WWX projecting onto JC. Because he thinks JC MUST be thinking that way. BC WWX thinks he deserves JC’s hatred. And judging by how he keeps misinterpreting JC even pre-time-skip, and in true WWX fashion fully believes himself to be right & doesn't second guess himself and or makes any effort to understand JC, & JYL is always the JC translator for him, from the moment she says to him that despite his tantrum JC is happy to finally have a playmate, to the moment she says that JC was the one who offered WWX name JL, and without JYL there to take their hands and pull them to meet each other in the middle the brothers can't communicate, Jiang Cheng has never been so much his own person in Wei Wuxian's mind as WWX's interpretation of him. WWX's shidi. An open book to WWX in WWX's mind. When he was not WWX's fragile shidi who needed protection (which @cerusee has written a great meta about here.), then he was WWX's betrayed, angry shidi who blamed him & resented him. If JC forgives him and continues to be his loving brother then it’s clear that the only one who can’t forgive WWX is WWX. and what is he gonna do about that?

In the scene where jl was upset talking about his father's sword and berating himself during a breakdown after a confrontation wtih wn, jc arrives and immediately assumes he is being bullied. He doesn't tell him to suck it up and man up like you'd expect from a man of that time. He instead immediately rushes to his aid, ready to throw down with whoever "bullied" him and seems to express great empathy for his nephew's anguish.

And then, jl himself tells wwx that jc would never hurt him. He's all bark no bite. And jl doesn't seem to be walking on eggshells around jc unlike jc sorta was with his mother. Jl is kinda sassy and open with him in fact, something jc never was with his mother.... he would have never given her some of the insolence and back chat jl does with jc sometimes XD.

Jc is also the first person jl often calls for whenever he's in trouble. He doesn't seem to call for jgy or anyone from the jin sect which I find interesting. He obviously loves jgy and was devastated by his betrayal. But based on this alone, it's fair to assume that he must have been closer to jc.

Jc being an uncle from the maternal side doesn't even have to bother with jl as much as he does, really. He could happily live his life without the burden of a child to constantly look after and yet is still very much involved in his life, following him on night hunts, training him and jumping to his rescue at a moments notice. This tells us a lot about his character I think.

Sure, he inherited his mother's tough love and no nonsense attitude, but I do think he also learned from her behavior and adopted some healthy coping mechanisms too. E.g allowing jl to cry and be open about his feelings. He seems to spoil and smother him more in that aspect than his mother ever did. Jl himself seems to have turned out well too under jcs care. I suppose that is something else for jc to be proud of, knowing his little nephew has turned out so well ^^

Who is going around saying JC would have raised A-Yuan better?!

Can they not read? Have they hit their head and are concussed? Do they need medical assistance?!

There is so much wrong with this whole scenario I don't even know where to begin!

Let's start with the fact that JC is the reason A-Yuan has no living relatives left…

That JC actually brought a horde of blood thirsty people to where the child was living, totally unperturbed by the fact an innocent toddler would most certainly die. People think A-Yuan should live with the guy that did that?

JC hates all the Wens, even those who were innocent and not only helped save him, but secured his parents' remains for him! He abuses his own nephew, slapping him around and making him feel unworthy. If he does that to his own flesh and blood, what type of life would A-Yuan have had if in some skewed, illogical alternative universe where JC actually had a heart and not only actively spared the toddler but raised him himself?!

What an awful upbringing the poor child would have had. He's already lost everyone, why are some intent on making him suffer any more?!

LWJ did an absolutely incredible job raising A-Yuan. WWX is not only instantly drawn towards the boy but he has nothing but praise for whoever raised him! As opposed to his impression of JL, where he ponders why the boy has turned out so arrogant, ill-tempered and brimming with hostility - much like his uncle and father.

Just look at the evidence!

LSZ is a well adjusted, kind, caring, smart young man who gets on with others and has great cultivation and leadership skills. Whereas JL, harbours so much unnecessary pain and resentment in his heart thanks to JC outright lying about the circumstances around his mother's death, encouraging him to embrace the hatred within him instead. JL puts himself in danger and does not care about dying as long as he's able to prove his worth and abilities to JC. Not to mention how lonely the poor kid is. It's heartbreaking to see what has become of JYLs baby - and this is with the boy only living with his uncle half of the time!!

Thankfully WWX is trying his best to rectify these issues and JL is showing promise due to the influence of WWX, LWJ and the other juniors.

I honestly don't know how LSZ could be any better than he already is in canon. Whoever stated this is utterly delusional and doesn't understand the plot or characters at all.

MDZS: analyzing the Cloud Recesses Lectures Brawl, and Jin Zixuan's uncaring attitude towards Jiang Yanli

I know a lot of people tend to think JZX's insulting JYL, and the subsequent brawl during the Cloud Recesses Lectures arc, isn't really a very big deal, and I sorta get why? his insult seems pretty lukewarm, and boys will be boys, and so on… but honestly, if you start reading more Chinese novels, you'll pretty soon pick up that the brawl had a very good reason to happen.

I was talking with a good friend about it, and we ended up breaking it down. They suggested I might as well post about it.

let's start with Chinese Historical Customs: a married lady would have near total reliance on the backing and favor of her husband to have any power whatsoever within her household, or even be able to live comfortably -- without his backing and support, she'd be cut off from money, essential materials such as winter gear and heating fuel, even good food; the servants wouldn't bother listening to her (she'd have a few of her own brought from her first home, but not many); and being bullied (read: anything from humiliated to actually hurt) by her new family wouldn't be uncommon (and we all know what a pit of vipers the Jin Sect was even then).

doublespeak, face, and reputation, all meant that, intentionally or not, JZX was setting JYL up for a MISERABLE future life: by badmouthing her in public so everybody knows that her future husband thinks she's mediocre and unsatisfactory, he's saying he doesn't respect her (or her family! more on that in the next bullet point). if he doesn't respect her, he won't support her or help her if she needs him, because he doesn't care about her reputation, and therefore neither does he care about her comfort, or, well, about her... anything.

more Chinese Historical Customs, or, the Natal Family's Protection: a married lady's last backup defense is the fact that disrespecting her means disrespecting her family, who the husband has allied himself with by marrying her. the more they care about her, the more the natal family will respond to slights to her. they respond through retaliation -- by making the husband pay for disrespecting their daughter.

thus WWX's and JC's immediate answer of punching JZX for his remarks may have seemed disproportionate, but was actually not incorrect.

(They even gave JZX the chance to retract his words first!)

Stressors and Magnifiers: JZX isn't just being this dismissive in front of the two of them, which is already grounds for STRONG retaliation -- he's disrespecting their family's daughter right to their face!!! -- he's ALSO saying this to every single important peer they have, all of whom will go back home and tell that JZX, whose mother is dear friends with JYL's mother, and who visit each other all the time, and who thus must know her best... thinks she's so worthless, she can even be badmouthed in public. he's not only saying he will allow her to be disrespected by others, he's also drastically lowering her value to every other gentry prospect!!!

punching him was a brute and unrefined response, but it was a tradeoff: it traded away "face" for JYL's sake and protection. which she desperately needed right then. it sent the answer that disrespect towards JYL would be met by the strongest and most immediate retaliation the Jiang could possibly make;

and JFM agrees with the whole thing, because he finishes the move and breaks the engagement: "if you don't value her, then you don't get to have her".

(obligatory note that WWX was not expelled for his actions that day, and chose to return to Lotus Pier with JFM on his own... after finding out that LWJ had gone into seclusion and would no longer be around for him to tease.)

(obligatory note that it's extremely unlikely JZX was a malicious mastermind doing anything on purpose during this scene. we don't get a lot on him, but he was probably, honestly, just being a stupid teenager about a situation he was upset with. unfortunately, the above consequences still apply.)

(final note that neither JZX, nor, apparently, JYL, learned anything from this whole debacle. the Wartime Soup Incident is the exact same damn thing, except about ten times worse, and with much greater damage potential to her prospects and reputation.)

I've seen a few comments flying around about WWX and JC being close at one point and I just have to vent a little because I think so much is overlooked.

Let's simplify every so the people at the back can understand. Take away all the history they have, reverse the clock and lets have WWX grow up in a different sect or something like that. Now let's have JC and WWX meet...

Okay, now how are these to people ever going to be friends? They are almost polar opposites in every sense - and yes, while my friends are very different to me at times, our core values are similar, whereas JCs and WWXs are not. JC is always threatened by those who make him feel inferior - it's another reason he dislikes LWJ. So there's that hurdle to get over. Not to mention JC is a classist snob who does not like those he deems of a lower birth. Let's also note the fact WWX likes to stay positive and JC is a negative cloud of absolute mood killing vibes. They are simply incompatible and only got on because they were thrown together.

Those cling to the comment WWX said about always thinking JC would be by his side, that really should be taken with a pinch of salt in my opinion. WWX often glazes over things that are painful for him. WWX probably did think he'd be at the sect his whole life, but that wasn't necessarily out of fondness towards JC, it was out of duty and debt more than anything. He never really imagined a real future for himself until he got a second chance at life!

There is a very contradicting line when JC arrives at the burial mounds, when WWX thinks about a falling out was a long time coming. Because they are different and not that close. He didn't even expect him to help (even though it was his debt to pay), he already took Suibian (a sword he can no longer wield!) and his small amount of personal belongings to the burial mounds prior to that! It's a major clue he knew JC would be a dick about it all.

WWX meets JL and instantly notices all his bad traits, blaming JC and JZX. I'd say that's pretty damning evidence to the contrary to be honest.

It doesn't make WWX a bad person because he wasn't really a true friend to JC, people are allowed to not really get along with others and still be a nice person. Of course WWX cares for JC (a little) but it's hard to muster up such feelings when someone is pretty abusive towards you and doesn't support you at all. WWX is kind, but he's no fool.

WWX's actions when it comes to JC are mainly from a place of debt and there is nothing wrong with that. WWX makes the most out of a bad situation, and unfortunately this is no different. He's obligated to get along with JC in his first life, he chooses not to in his second, because that obligation is no longer there and he's had enough of the self centered ass.

Who does JYL marry? There is absolutely no question in my mind that the best option in terms of inter-sect connections, and a desire on JC and WWX's parts that she be safe and cared for, is for her to marry Nie Mingjue. She would have had a chance to get to know him during the Sunshot campaign, and we all know NMJ drinks respect -women-juice for breakfast - and is a big softie, like look what he lets his brother get away with >.< So yeah, JYL goes to Qinghe and gets a spare didi out of the deal!

But why does she marry? Because yes, she still has feelings for JZXuan, but he's still a man-child who doesn't know a good thing when he sees it ;) But seriously, we have YMJ which is still rebuilding after the war and likely getting more and more in debt to get the supplies and manpower to fix up Lotus Pier, not to mention attracting new disciples to feed and clothe, so they'd need an alliance with another great sect - one that's stable financially and could even help YMJ. Gusu is still rebuilding as well, so they're out, and we've eliminated the Jin. THankfully Qinghe is a solid option all around (as stated above). And JYL has known from the time she was young that she would marry for an alliance, not for love - she would be the one to sit JC and WWX down to tell them it needs to be done (when they hear her suggestion of NMJ, that's the thing that gets them on board - they would have fought just about anyone else).

So at Koi Tower, things might be a little more uncertain because these clans are based on hereditary hierarchy, and without an heir along Jin Zixuan's line, his position is uncertain even if he's the only legitimate son. So JGS pushes for a marriage - even worse when he sees Qin Su's pursuit of JGY, because he'll be DAMNED if he allows JGY to marry before JZXuan. Sadly, I have no idea who he'd marry, probably the daughter of a smaller sect's leader (Yao or Ouyang maybe), but it would be a rushed deal and will make poor JZXuan miserable - but he'll do it because it's what's expected of him, and even though he will not love his wife, he will still give her far more respect than his father gave his mother (I know, low bar, but the boy is TRYING).

So with JYL engaged to NMJ by the time of the Phoenix Mountain Hunt, things go a little different - yes WWX will bust out the Wen remnants and fuck out of dodge, but JYL will go to NMJ and ask him to help WWX (at the very least give him a chance to explain instead of denouncing him with everyone else). This turns the tide for many things because once NMJ sees the conditions of the Burial Mounds and what's left of the Wen, he will be amenable to helping - but will do so under the condition that WWX give up demonic cultivation (and in fact he suggests Nie cultivation as an alternative - this will lead to a sad moment when WWX FINALLY comes up with a proper story and claim that WZL melted his core to explain that he's core-less, and after much crying all around, they can finally move forward from this mess).

So the Nie will lend their protection to the Wen in the Burial Mounds and actually suggest they move up into Qinghe - not by the Unclean Realm, but he will give them land to live on that isn't full of resentful energy, and they will have QHN's protection. This is good, and in return, a certain doctor meets NMJ and will start researching his condition to treat (and hey, if you wanna have fun, have her join NMJ & JYL, I'm easy ;)

So yeah! One change and everything changes like dominos :D

I get the appeal of wanting to make things nice and give tragic characters a happy life but if you try to do that with a series whose appeal is intense interpersonal drama and tragedy, it just gets incredibly boring to see everyone happy and getting along and being supportive of each other and shit. it makes them so generic, stripping away what made them interesting and compelling in the first place

#the fact that jc left wq and her family to die while wwx saved her and her family #is in fact a very important part of their relationships woth each other #jc and wq dating would never happen in canon even if she actually liked him #likewise jzx stayed with his family and jyl stayed with him #putting them at odds with the wens and wwx no matter how much jyl and wwx loved each other #and jc and wwx have this tragic tortuous relationship marred by parental abuse and rife with cruelty and sacrifice #and these things really matter to their characterizations and personalities #mm and wn arent just one-note side characters they're people with convictions who fought back against #contempt and brutality for themselves and what they thought was right #ugh everyone is so bland in this AU. why do I can about them at all #all mm does is make uhaul lesbian jokes and wn is just a shy and nice aroace guy #which. dont think I dont see that. thin fucking ice #anyway these things are rly important to their characterizations and identities #and idk who these people are or why I should care about them #...still have to finish it tho. I've read meta about how in Chinese culture jc's owed the wen siblings a debt and he should have saved them, but I've also read meta about how he owed a hugger debt to his own sect. I've read how jgy killed whr and nmj, people who he owned his educations (debts). I thought that mdzs was more about "Who is wrong? Who is right?" so that everyone is a bit wrong and a bit right but this kind of meta make me doubt myself and think that maybe in mdzs someone is really morally right (wwx and lwj) and everyone else is wrong. Regarding your question about debts and what is "owed" in relationships, I think it's important to clarify that like, presumably if someone saved your life you'd also owe them a debt of gratitude, a life debt, or however and whichever other 'debt' terminology you'd care to use there. So this concept of "debt" because you owe someone for doing something for you is not in and of itself a 'unique to Chinese culture' problem, and I think looking at "oh this person "owes" this other person a thing" is not entirely a great? way to analyze how character relationships "should" or should not go. There are lots of ways we as people in a society owe other people in our society and the characters in this book, much like us, are trapped in a confluence of factors that pull them in different directions regarding what they should or should not do.

The book itself (at least from my own opinion) is meant to read as "everyone is both right and wrong at various points in this text because this is a book with complex characters and not a morality lesson" because lest we forget, WWX made a woman eat a chair leg at one point, which. We cannot say this was correct in really anything except the most reductive main character centric interpretation.

Regarding debts themselves that say, WangXian might owe their families in accordance to their society that sound just about the same as the examples mentioned above, we can say things like "since Wei Wuxian was raised by the Jiang, he should've been helping Jiang Cheng rebuilding Lotus Pier instead of sitting around drinking or running off with the Wen!" or "how dare Lan Wangji injure thirty-three of his family elders, doesn't he know he should've been filial to them and owed his education and position in society to the Lan Sect?" and "why is it that WangXian got to go fuck in a bush at the end of the story when other people who arguably did fewer crimes end up dead? Does this mean they owed less to society or made all the right choices compared to say, the other people who are still in fact super dead and don't get to fuck their beloved in a bush?"

Does this start to look like this concept of "debts" doesn't,,, actually explain anything about the moral complexities of the character's situations? That's because it isn't a good indicator of if character x made a moral choice or not.

But again, this whole concept of "debts" to explain why a character does a thing and why they're morally good or evil and reprehensible for not doing this other thing is entirely a thing fandom does in meta to make their fave look good or character they're an anti about look extremely bad under a case of "well ACKSHUALLY morality says they SHOULD HAVE done this!" None of these characters exist either as Perfectly Moral Beings or Perfectly Evil Immoral Beings inside a decision making vacuum.

It...also doesn't really matter if your fave is right or wrong either :D just for context. They're all fictional blorbos upon a page and or screen. No real person was harmed in over the course of the story. No woman deep throated a chair leg, no child was tossed down the stairs, no groups of people were massacred, no brothers were abandoned, no one was poisoned with rage disease until they died, nobody committed incest... etc etc and honestly debating about if fictional characters were right or wrong fascinates me a lot less than "what does the story tell us about what drove them and made them tick?" and "what adaptational and translational choices did other people before me make about this story and do I agree with them on their adaptational choices."

I just don't think the "did this character repay their debts -> is this character a good person -> a morally good character therefore doesn't owe anyone anything anymore and if they do owe someone something that doesn't count/no they don't." pipeline is particularly useful from an analyzing the story standpoint.

How reputation works in MDZS is quite representative of the novel's themes.

Reputation in MDZS, much like in real life, does not accurately represent the truth about a person, but rather it represents how they are perceived. And how they are perceived in cultivation society has a lot more to do with status and power than what their personality is like or what they actually did. More importantly, it has to do with how well they adhere to societal expectations (a lot of which are based on status).

That's why people like YZY, whose attitude was terrible and who never did anything impressive in the novel (at any point that we're told) had a reputation as being impressive and powerful, and yet she liked to whip little boys and lost the only battle we saw her fight. She couldn't even stop WLJ of all people from sending off the signal to initiate the invasion of Lotus Pier - and we're explicitly told that WLJ was so weak she couldn't even wield a cultivation sword and had to make do with a branding iron. WLJ was absolutely not a fighter. YZY was also an incompetent leader, who failed to prepare for an attack everyone knew was coming - refused to believe the Jiang sect would be attacked despite what had happened to the Lan clan just because of her delusions of superiority born out of her classist world view - and once the Wens did arrive at her door, she handled the situation in the worst way possible by escalating it and finally choosing to sacrifice the sect for the sake of her own personal pride, again, born out of classism. To me, this means that we're supposed to notice that YZY's reputation is empty, and it actually comes from her being born with a hight status.

We also have JZXun, who we all know was an imbecile and cruel, arrogant and mean person, whose deeds can all be summarized as abusing and preying of the weak while overestimating himself. He was the one who ambushed WWX with 300 archers by his side, and yet he was seen as a victim by society as the victim, and defended as such, and his flaws were consistently ingnored.

Then we have JC, who built up his reputation by slaughtering the Wens in the burial mounds, people he himself had identified as the weak, the old the women and children. He then went on to spend the next 13 years kidnapping, torturing a d killing people he suspected of being demonic cultivator, and didn't let go even when proven wrong. I won't bring up the life debt he owed the Wen siblings and the golden core he owed WWX because society at large didn't know about those. The point here is that even with all that despite not being liked by people who actually met him, being known to have a bad temper, to not protect his own people unless it either brought him glory or somebody died first, and being known to act like a tyrant, at the time of WWX's resurrection into MXY's body JC was known as a war hero. That's because he was a sect leader. Had JC not had his status, he wouldn't have had anything else either.

Then we have WWX who was always righteous. When he was fighting for the sects in the SSC, everyone approved of him, when the war ended and he didn't act submissive, they feared and hated him. During the Phoenix Mountain Hunt, WWX took down one third of the prey and NMJ took down another another third, and yet, everyone was criticizing WWX, accusing him of breaking the (inexistent) rules and disapproving of him for acting above his status. On the other hand, nobody thought there was anything wrong with NMJ doing the very same thing WWX did. In fact, the thing the cultivation society hated the most about WWX wasn't his cultivation, evidenced by the fact that nobody cared that the Jin sect had XY experiment with demonic cultivation until XY went and murdered a whole clan (and even then, only NMJ did anything about it and it was only the murder he seemed to have a problem with), and nobody had any qualms about using WWX's knowledge and inventions. In fact, what the cultivation society hated the most about WWX was that he dared to act above his status. Just like this, WWX who was a truly good man had a much worse reputation than all those men mentioned above, all of whom were incomparably worse people than he.

We see a few cases like LWJ's, whose reputation was quite accurate and whose exalted deeds were true. Crucially, LWJ was a member of the Lan clan, the son of a sect leader and then the brother of one. He was famous for going where the chaos was, and helping anyone regardless of their identity. The pinacle of what a cultivator should be like, a truly righteous man. And yet, the moment he sided with WWX, the man they had previously slandered to death, cultivation society was ready to turn against him. It was only by the intervention of NHS that LWJ and WWX even got the chance to prove their innocence and expose the true culprits. Crucially, NHS was a sect leader who had real power (unlike LWJ who was the brother of a sect leader and therefore had high status bit little power).

NHS himself had a high status but a reputation as an incompetent and useless brat. However, NHS's case is different from WWX's because NHS had such a reputation intentionally, and used it as means to achieve his goals.

Anyway, I'm just ranting here because I got tired of seeing JC and YZY stans using their reputation of all things to claim that they were "badass" or somehow good or heroic when it doesn't match the actuality of their actions and capabilities in the novel.

some thoughts on the jiang family and classism:

i feel like the jiangs’ have one of the most interesting relationships with classism in MDZS, because the beliefs they espouse don’t necessarily align with their actions.

there is this perception that ymj is kind of this wild and free (...untamed perhaps? ba dum tshhh) land that doesnt subject itself to the same standards of classism as the rest of the jianghu, which is why wwx was able to thrive there. but there is also a cognitive dissonance because wwx is not treated particularly well due to in part his status (there are many other factors but thats a different post!)

one of yzy’s most constant criticisms of wwx is that he’s the son of a servant, and although jfm elevates his status--he never expresses any illusions of actually making wwx his heir or attempts to adopt him. jfm is the cause of most of the contradiction here.

jfm doesn’t actually elevate wwx, not in the way he thinks he does. he gives wwx the status of being jc’s personal attendant, expecting him to grow alongside and take care of jc and jyl. however, this is the status wwx wouldve already had if his father wcz had stayed in ymj. so he wasn’t really giving wwx anything that he wouldn’t have already had rights to. but at the same time he elevates wwx’s status in other ways: allowing him to eat with the family, letting him study in gusu with the other young masters, letting him choose whether or not he wants to go to the wen indoctrination camp. (notice i do not list him being head disciple here. that’s because i very much so believe wwx earned his position as head disciple through his own merits.)

and the reason i think jfm gave wwx these privileges is because they’re the privileges he wishes he could give to wcz. removing social barriers between himself and his best friend so that they could be as close as he wanted. and this goes along with jfm believing that he isn’t classist. 

but the thing is jfm doesn’t realize that he is actually just practicing exceptionalism. he doesnt actually take issue with the system itself, he just thinks that wwx (and wcz and cssr) are too great to be limited by the system. they’re the exception to the rule. and this internal dissonance causes further issues with his family, particularly jc and yzy.

yzy has no illusions about her stance on classism. she IS classist in the way society would expect her to be and she shows no desire to change that. she is sticking to the status quo!

jc however recognizes that he (and his father) are practicing exceptionalism. he just doesnt care. he shows favoritism! he doesn’t treat all people equally because 1) he doesnt care about all people and 2) society doesnt expect him to either. it is not unreasonable of him to have a vested interest in the people closest to him and to prioritize them over other people (His Family+WWX --> YMJ --> Literally everyone else.). In fact this is what most people tend to do. But this causes tension between him and jfm, as well as tension between him and yzy!

bc jfm is an idealist who thinks jc should do MORE and be more like him, and yzy is a realist who thinks jc is already doing TOO MUCH. he is caught between them both physically and philosophically, because he is actually representing the middle ground between them.

I don't get why there's so much hate for JC. Fanon JC is still JC and there's realism to him too. Realism can be subjective but that doesn't mean its depiction is wrong or unrealistic. It is factually correct and righteous.

Are you new to the fandom? Because let me tell you, no one had a problem with JC until the fanon version of him started to pop up everywhere and people started to indirectly or directly undermine the series protags to lift him up.

And no one bothered to tag it. We don't care if you worship the ground JC walks on or relate with some of his character traits. We just don't want to read a fic for Wangxian only for everyone in the story to lift JC up, who is a canonical antagonist, and bash on WWX. Nothing was tagged. We just ended up being bombarded with fanon JC everywhere.

You know the feeling when you stumble across JC bashing and feel hurt because of it? Well, it happened all the time for us, without warning or consideration.

At some point, people started to rebel against the fanon narrative and started writing fics or seeking fics where THEIR FAVS AND CANON PROTAGS weren't needlessly bashed to just make JC rosy.

Do that if you want. But we reserve the right to create our own space without all of the elements undesirable to us. Which is why we choose to have a separate tag. That's why we generally mark our fics as not jc friendly.

Which isn't a courtesy given to us in return. We are expected to just deal with it because your interpretation of his character is more popular. We tag our posts and fics, you don't bother to do the same in return, and we end up stumbling over shit and have to work harder to keep our space clean because JC fans can't take the extra effort to just label their stuff properly.

The fact is simple. We're not interested in JC. We're not interested in redeeming him or elevating him, or worrying about his woes. In fact, we'd like to be as far away from that as possible.

But this fandom makes it *impossible* by not tagging things properly.

I'm not going to other people's inboxes and urging them to reconsider their stances on JC. I frankly don't care. I have loved bastard characters and antagonists that are worse than what JC can pull off in his lifetime. Itachi comes to mind, so does Aizen and Sesshoumaru, or Sephiroth.

Do your thing. But don't pretend this was started by us just because we didn't quietly submit to the popular stance on JC.

I won't argue on what's canon and what's not. We have done that to death already. At this point, I don't even care. I don't read fanfics directly, I just write them and read the books. There is no chance of me stumbling across a JC positive fic when I am reading only glittering or some other other I trust.

And there's no need to try to explain JC to me. I am a whole ass adult leading a relatively difficult but successful life. I know right from wrong pretty well.
