Forgotten and Overlooked Cartoon Movies

On this week’s discussion we will explore two cartoon movies that you either may have watched when you were a child and got you disturbed giving you nightmares or you watched as an adult but probably had the same reaction as if you were a little kid. Or maybe it was just me who felt very confused watching it. This brings to my mind a thought. Are cartoons/ animation movies strictly designed for a young audience? Can a cartoon that is designed for children bring themes that may bring valuable discussions at home and teach good lessons to a little mind in development? Finding Nemo suggests to kids that step out of your comfort zone is important and to never give up even having so many obstacles on your life journey. Mulan is a great representation and inspiration for little girls to know that they can and should fight for their rights with confidence and independence. The list of animation movies that can be very inspiring for children is extensive. Although not all the cartoons/ animations movies have a young audience target. Titles such as “Fritz the Cat” (1972), “South Park” (1999) and the outstanding autobiographical “Persepolis” (2007) are definitely movies that probably wouldn’t be a good idea to have your child sitting next to you in the living room while you watch it.

Some movies sometimes either get forgotten or overlooked in the history of cartoon movies. Today we will give the attention necessary and deserved to two adult cartoon masterpieces; “Fantastic Planet” (1973) directed by Rene Laloux and “Watership Down” (1978) directed by Martin Rosen. Both movies are incredible on bringing to the table topics such as violence and power, authoritarian leaderships, division of social classes, democracy, the seek of home and belonging. We will cover that in a moment but excuse me on giving you some spoilers first. Both movies are modeled and gives to the audience historical lessons about specific times, events, and political aspects in society.

“Fantastic Planet” (1973) was a landmark in the history of European animation directed by Rene Laloux. The movie is a completely though-through science fiction vision which may be for many breathtaking or an unnecessarily experimental miserable detour. The movie resonates with historical allegories and radical politics based on European aesthetic principles. I personally find the aesthetic of this movie very surrealistic and resembles Salvador Dali’s artworks. The film takes place on the planet Ygam and shows two tribles of organisms that live against each other. The gigantic, intellectual, and blue Draags and the small and pinkish Oms that were removed by their masters Draags from their planet. The Oms are domesticated and enslaved by the Draags. The story unfolds and is narrated by Terr, one of the members of the Oms who grows and matures being domesticated next to the Draags. Terr learns about the culture of the Draags and their strange rituals of learning, meditation, wisdom, and development. Through mental inducement devices to transmit knowledge to future generations the Draags open the collective wisdom of their race. Terr escapes his captors and joins a renegade group of Oms. As the Draags try to control the radical Oms the film concludes in the final confrontation between the two groups and a satellite known as the Fantastic Planet.

In 1968 the film faced obstacles in the middle of its production. Soviet tanks invaded Prague, where the film was being produced, and occupied the city. After the invasion, the production of the film was extended for four years and was only released in 1973. In many ways the film represents these events. The communist occupation not only in Czechoslovakia but also in other Eastern European countries, is directly reminiscent of the convenient enslavement of the Oms by the Draags. In addition, the analogy of the relationship between owner and animal is effective between representing the relationship between the Soviet Union and its satellite states. While animals and Oms experienced modest degrees of autonomy, this was always monitored and limited by their masters. In both cases these masters maintained the fate of their servants. During that time, the illusion of this need was fabricated and often promoted to praise the positive attributes in the master. Besides that, the illusion of freedom has always been available at a distance, but it was collected in small doses. The masters reinforced and affirmed the hierarchical relationship that subordinates had with their servants. Two other elements are also symbolic of social and historical phenomena. Firstly,the tactics and techniques used by the Draags to destabilize the Oms and the camps where they lived that resemble the Nazi concentration camps and gas cameras. The film does an excellent job portraying the terror that the Draags cause in the Oms. The threat is greater than the attacks themselves. Didactically shows how to psychologically demoralize a society. Fear and oppression can have much greater causes and penetrate the coincidence of their victims. The film is then a provocative incursion into the state-sponsored psychological terror and its behaviors.

The second movie in discussion is “Watership Down” (1978) by Martin Rosen. The movie is a British animation based on the novel “Watership Down” by Richard Adams. The film was successful in the UK but not so much in the US. The controversy around it is what brings more attention. At first the audience may think it is a movie about cute bunnies living on a field. Well, its not extremely wrong but it goes far beyond it and its sensitive and explicit content is what labels the movie as an adult animation. The plot focuses on a group of rabbit living in the countryside. The group learns that their land is being invaded and poisoned by a construction company. They try to persuade the chief to evacuate. The chief refuses and they make a breakthrough with other members of their community. Many altercations happen between the group and makes the plot more excited and intriguing. The violence and the rage of the rabbits are shocking for many viewers. This film was U rated, which means it is suitable for all ages. And that’s what makes it more controversy. It creeps adults out and I can only imagine all the nightmares kids would have after watching it. The story is simply enough to follow with some tips of comedy in between the dramatic violent and swearing scenes.

What most of the viewers may not know is that “Watership Down” was inspired by its novel author Richard Adams real life personal experiences. He revealed that many of the animals in the movie were designed and based on officers that he, as a lieutenant, commanded in the World War 2. Not just the characters but many of the stories lived by the bunnies were also based on his real-life experiences and specifically the Battle of Arnhem, which he fought for over nine days in September 1944. Many soldiers were killed, and it answers why we see so many deaths and violent scenes in the movie. The character Hazel was inspired in his commanding officer Gifford. Gifford survived the war, and so did Hazel. According to the author, Bigwig was based on Captain Desmond “Paddy” Kavanagh. Adams describes him as “afraid of nothing and sensationalist”. “Good stories ought to be exciting and if they are exciting, they are inevitably scary in parts”- Richard Adams.

Learning more about the two films and its context, I believe it is easier now to understand and visualize the shared topics prior mentioned. Both movies are a tremendous critic to abuse of power and the use of mental and physical violence by the leaders in both fictional and real society. Our contemporary society lived and still experiences all these aspects. The movies simple used real-life events to base their narrative on. The division between social classes is clearly visible specially on “Fantastic Planet”. In todays age we still see and fight against this variance. Socio-economics class division happens in every and each country around the globe and it can be even more endured when we add race and sexual orientation for example. The seek of home and belonging are also very well covered in both movies. All the groups in both films wanted a place to be free from oppression and without fearing for their lives. I believe that everyone around this planet first goal in life is to feel secure, free and have a place that they can finally have this feeling of belonging inside their hearts.

Movements such as the Black Lives Matter are a great example of an oppressed community who is (and has always been) standing up for themselves, making them and their stories heard and fighting against an oppressive system in order to gain equality, safety and freedom.

In reference to the movie “Watership Down” I would like to also use the MST (Landless Workers Movement) as an example of fighting for the right of obtaining living and a sense of belonging. The Brazilian social movement defines it’s as goals access to land for the poor workers through land reforms.

We already know that in “Fantastic Planet” the system the Draags kept the Oms in is oppressive and limit their capability of learning. They were labeled as savage and domesticated Oms. This system pretty much reflects the society we live in. The system intentionally takes out the chances of the less fortunate on learning and growing as people. It creates a division either in the movie and in our society between the “intellectuals” and the “anti-intellectuals”. What happens is that most oppressed group does not even have the eager of gaining more knowledge and that is all a consequence of the system they live in. It is all meticulously orchestrated by the system and it only makes the so called “intellectual” group of society more powerful over the other groups.

To be able to overcome their reality, the Oms had to finally come together and unite against the Draags. They had to listen to the domesticated and now more educated Oms who had more information and knowledge at the time. Without uniting, the Oms would not be able to defend themselves and attack the Draags.

Back to “Watership Down” we also see how internal conflicts inside a group or community may ruin or delay a common goal. In the movie we have characters that could fall into the label of intellectual and anti-intellectual. The protagonist of the movie, Hazel, may fall into the label of “intellectual”. He is the lead of the group and his actions were always to benefit all the band of rabbits and specially protect the small ones. Blackcherry is Hazel’s main source of knowledge and guidance. For this reason, he can also be called an “intellectual” in the group. In other hand we have Strawberry, a large rabbit but with no knowledge of how to live in the wild. He wanted to learn, although his lack of understanding of the wilderness could always affect their group.

To make a quick correlation to our society, we could divide the rabbits into a younger and older group. For example, in the younger group we have Hazel, Fiver, Strawberry and Dandelion. A group of young but very loyal and fierce rabbits. All of them with their specific positive characteristics that could be substantially important to a success of a group. In the older group we have General Woundwort, Captain Campion, and Captain Holly. Although they may be strong and experienced some of their actions may be destructive to the well being of the group. The older group often questions if the younger really knows what they are doing by their lack of experience. It is often seeing in our society too. An example is how our society keep only trusting in old candidates for important positions in our government. Why not to trust in new faces and new ideas for our society? The chances to keep repeating the problems are high. Maybe new minds and new ideas can make a lot of positive changes.

December 29: The Wrath of Khan

Today’s movie watching was Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.

My overall impression versus TMP is that this is clearly a smoother and more consistently entertaining film. It has a definite story with very little filler, good pacing, a lot of great little dialogue and character moments, and a strong conflict at its center.

But its sci fi bona fides are much weaker. Like by a lot.

Mom and I are talking a bit about Genesis and the more we talk, the weaker it appears to me. First, it’s not really as believable, imo, as a lot of Star Trek. Maybe it’s because it’s not alien based, but I just have a harder time suspending disbelief to think this is possible. Second, it’s not clear why anyone thought this was a good idea. I mean, as McCoy immediately pointed out, it just seems so CLEARLY dangerous: an object meant to foster creation that could so easily be the worst weapon the universe has ever known--nothing could go awry there! Third, the reason for creating such a device isn’t obvious at all. Carol mentions the “growing population” and “food scarcity” but nothing we’ve ever seen of the Federation implies they’re running out of space. Or, frankly (Tarsus IV aside), food. And fourth, there really isn’t any point to Genesis in all its particulars in this film. Like, obviously, its actual purpose is a plot device to resurrect Spock. Within just this film, it doesn’t do anything. Khan wants it, for some reason I’ve already forgotten even though I just saw the film, and he gets it, but I didn’t even notice that happening, because it was so unimportant. His REAL mission is his single minded revenge fantasy on Kirk. Genesis is just a McGuffin/space filler/plot device for the next film.

And honestly that’s not such a big deal, except that when you compare it to TMP, ,and its central idea of a human made probe that gained so much knowledge, doing what we taught it to do, that it became sentient and then started searching for the meaning of life, and how this relates to the search for meaning experienced by the main alien lead, and how his search, in that film and throughout the series, is a mirror for humans and OUR need for purpose... well it just seems really weak. “We made this really dangerous and unrealistic thing for no reason whoops!”

Mom is now criticizing Kirk for being too slow on the uptake when he first encounters the Reliant, which is fair. That’s pretty OOC of him. The idea that he’s too old for space is both one that I must personally disregard, and one that the film would have you discard, since we’ve already heard from TWO characters, the people who know him best, that his best destiny is as a starship captain, and command is his proper role. And that he might be a little rusty is also not a great explanation imo, because the rust was supposed to have come off in TMP. So, plot hole probably.

We were trying to do some math--TMP is at least 2 years post 5YM and TWOK is at least 10 years post TMP, so at least 8 years post TMP. I can understand more rust growing but like... he was already an Admiral in TMP and the idea that he was out of practice with actual command was a big part of his arc there. So it doesn’t seem warranted to do that again.

Also, the way he was commanding poorly in TMP was very IC: he was pushing too hard, trying too much, caring too much about the mission and not enough about...the laws of physics. That’s very Kirk. Being slow on the uptake, caught with his britches down--that’s not Kirk. Plus, with no one to call him out on it, like Decker did in TMP, his poor command doesn’t seem like a big character obstacle to overcome but just like...sloppiness all around.

I thought Khan was over all... just not that interesting. I guess I’m just not into the obsession/revenge plot. Also...idk man he didn’t seem that super to me. He outsmarted Kirk, like, once, and Kirk outsmarted him like 4 times. He tortured some people--but regular humans can do that. He used those sandworm thingies, which is also something humans could do. Overall, he didn’t seem to have any particularly special skills. The only time he really seemed like a worthy adversary for Kirk was when Kirk wasn’t really being IC himself.

I’m also not into the fridging of his wife. Think how much cooler it would have been if she’d still been alive! The only non-super human in the bunch and she’s still there! Ex-Starfleet and bitter!

The K/S in this film is very soothing. Imo they are clearly together here, and the whole film is better if you assume they’re boyfriends and everyone knows. That Vulcan convo that Spock and Saavik have? Waaaaay funnier if you think she’s talking about his boyfriend (”not what I expected....very human” “Well no one’s perfect”). Every time they call each other ‘friend’ like ““friend”“? All the Looks? The birthday gift?

Also the “I have been and always shall be your [friend]” scene is a wedding I will not be taking criticism on this opinion. Could it have been written more like a vow? I think not. It’s not quite This Simple Feeling but it’s the best this film has in that regard.

I liked Saavik and I do think she’s one of the better later-movie additions (though I only like her, as far as I can remember, when played by Kirstie Alley). She didn’t necessarily strike me as super alien, though, at least not at first... But I appreciated how persistent she was about the stupid test, and her regulation quoting. I enjoyed her. I also liked how she was obviously Spock’s protege, which makes her Kirk’s step-protege, and they had just a little bit of that awkward dynamic going on. (”Did you change your hair?”)

The Bones and Kirk relationship was great in this film. You can really feel their friendship and their history with each other. Bones knows him so well and can be honest with him, just when Kirk needs it most.

I also love how Kirk has the SAME conversation with both Bones and Spock (re: being a captain again) but with Spock it’s sooooo much flirtier. In case you weren’t sure what the difference in these two relationships is.

Bonus: this bit of dialogue: Spock: “Be careful, Jim.” / Bones: “WE will.” Lol Spock people who aren’t your boyfriend do exist.

Obviously, I cried during THAT scene. Honestly AOS should have taken note about how to do emotional scenes like that: they come after the main action is over and the villain is defeated. Then they hit at the right time and to the right degree. Kirk just slumping down after Spock dies....like he’s boneless...like he doesn’t know what to do... I CANNOT.

I feel so bad for him that I’ll even forgive him that awful eulogy. Spock died for Genesis? Uh, no, he died for the Enterprise, and for YOU. Spock is the “most human”? You shut your whoreson mouth

I remember hating both Carol and David but I actually hated them less this time, Carol especially. My mom is being really harsh about her, though, which makes me feel less confident in my assessment. I mean first off, she’s the inventor of Genesis, which is a pretty big strike against her. Second...pretty lame to keep Kirk from David. Although I did some vague math and Kirk would only have been about 21, still in the Academy, when David was born, so you can see how that would work out. Also, she distinctly says “Were we together?” which means they were not--this was a fuck buddy arrangement for sure. More complicated. But it still feels weird to retcon that, like, he’s known THIS WHOLE TIME that he’s a dad and we’re only learning about it now, as an audience.

Anyway I’m getting off track. Carol. What to make of her? Is she unstable? Is she still mad at Kirk? My mom points out that she just decided on her own that David would want to join Starfleet if he knew Kirk was his father--whereas what seems to have happened instead is he didn’t just become a civilian scientist like his mom but became her specific protege--working on a project where everyone was probably handpicked by her? I would assume? Also..he hates Starfleet. Not to put everything on the mom, but how did that happen?

Also...going down the rabbit hole of this and feeling awkward about it... but David KNEW Kirk. As “that guy you hung around with.” That means Kirk was in his life for quite a while, long enough for him to have memories, and long enough for those memories to still be with him even into his 20s. But he was never allowed to know who Kirk was. That means Carol’s rule must have been “You can see your son but you can’t tell him who you are” which in some way seems meaner to me than just “please don’t contact us again.” If he was already on his way into space, that could even make sense--”I know you’re not going to be able to be a family with us, so let’s not pretend, let’s make a clean break now.” But that wasn’t what happened!

Anyway whatever not to be HAICG!Kirk about this or anything lol

David is mostly annoying because he’s so anti-Kirk lol. I found him least annoying when he came around to Kirk at the end. Another big strike against him: he wore his sweater tied over his shoulders in such a Preppy manner. I honestly don’t see what about him is supposed to be reminiscent of Kirk.

David/Saavik was definitely happening lol. I wish I could have heard that conversation. It sounds like she told him a lot!!! Not sure why she attached herself to this particular annoying human so fast but I guess she did.

....I think that might be all. The uniforms and general styling were much better than TMP (though less funny/entertaining), and it was certainly an enjoyable overall yarn. A lot to pick apart and critique but in a fun way. Will probably watch The Search for Spock soon.

PARASITE: My analysis (spoilers)

There’s so much to unpack in Parasite I don’t know where to start from. I have to say this was a magnificent thriller with that hint of horror that in my opinion really added to this film (and only Asian directors can so skillfully slide in without trashing the story by doing so). I don’t think I’ve ever been hanging on my seat as long as I did with Parasite. There are three narrative layers, one for each family: the Park’s, the Kim family and finally housemaid Moongwang and her husband. There is most certainly a descending social hierarchy between these people, explicitly portrayed by the location of their respective houses: while the Park’s live in a luxurious mansion flooded by light, the Kim’s share a semi basement enlighten by a narrow window at the street levels that not so occasionally becomes a toilet to drunk passersby and finally the housemaid hiding away her husband from loansharks in the underground bunker of Park’s house, where there is no light, no fresh air. I won’t recap the story since I assume you’ve watched it already, but I will focus on the dynamics among these groups of people instead and the symbolism this film is so rich of. I’ve found this movie incredibly dynamic as the director for two hours keeps taking us up and down a flight of stairs: we follow Mrs Park up to her kids rooms, and then we’re going down again to the living room; the housemaid takes us to the basement and then up again. As the movie gets to its core we go even lower through the asphyxiating corridors of the bunker and then out and away from its moldy walls. Beyond the blatant metaphor of stairs standing for a social ladder these people climb on and fall from, it was such a great device to create dynamism and tension in the story, which is set almost entirely in that single house. If we were to consider Parasite a play, then the Park’s house would be the stage, with the peculiarity of their owners being completely unaware of what unfolds around them and beneath their feet. They live in a blissful state and differently from anyone else around them, their concerns are minor. In a couple of scenes we find Mrs Park asleep and because of this condition, this sort of narcoleptic state, she becomes the emblem of the class she belongs to: around her is poverty, hunger, deception and violence, yet she is blind to it all and the moment it is all revealed before her eyes at the birthday party, she cannot stand the horror of the reality she ignored and she collapses unconscious. This is the undying reality of this world: so much misery is consuming this society yet those in a position of power and privilege more or less consciously ignore the existence of it.

So the real action takes place away from the Park’s eyes and even though this movie is a rollercoaster, the real climax is reached upon the discovery of the bunker. The Kim family is drinking together, watching the rain fall down as they daydream about their future: a moment of genuine happiness that is disrupted shortly after upon the arrival of the previous housemaid. To me this was the highest point of the movie and truly unexpected. The story moves into a different dimension and if up to that moment we have watched the poor slowly creep into the rich house through lies and deception, as we are visually taken underground to the bunker we switch from the parasite/host narrative to the parasite/parasite battle. It’s the beginning of a bloody conflict, the Kim’s on one hand, the maid and her husband on the other, fighting for the place of a slave.

There is a significative piece of dialogue that takes place between Moongwang (the maid) and Choongsok (Mrs Kim), right before the rest of Kim’s family accidentally reveal themselves, so making it clear to Moongwang what happened up to that moment: Moongwang asks Choongsok help, calling her “a sister in need” as she begs her to keep the secret and bring food to her husband, but Choongsok immediately refuses to identify with her, dismissing the title of sister in need and threatening to call the police as she stands in a position of power over Moongwang and her husband, even if only for so long. In that moment we can see how Mrs Kim is not willing to abandon what she considers her position of privilege in order to sympathize with the couple who shares with her more than she would like to admit. She shows no understanding for who happens to be lower than her (even if just by little): her only concern is to protect what she unrightfully gained. And in the lack of solidarity of fraternity we see the rich/poor juxtaposition being reproduced among the lowest classes. It only takes a bit of power for the one who holds it to abuse it on those below. It’s the survival of the fittest that knows no mercy.

The reason why I really enjoyed Parasite is the complexity or it, it is intense and holds a lot of meaning. It doesn’t simply come down to anti capitalism, because if it’s true that it shows us humans turning savages in their desperate quest for money and comfort, engaged in a constant conflict induced by a hierarchical structured society, it also portrays the fixity of that structure. Aspiring to reach the top of that pyramid, believing to fit among those staying at the top, is mere fantasy. And when Mr. Kim and his son Kiwoo realize that for themselves there’s no turning back to the tragedy. Starting from Mr Kim, it’s because of a smell, his smell, the smell of the corpse, that finally he stabs Mr. Park. For the ceo that smell crosses the line as it is the only thing giving away Kim Kitaek’s background. The Park believe him (just like everyone else in the family) to be an experienced driver, a professional in high demand, yet the only thing that brings them closer to the reality of that semi basement he lives in is too much for them and causes a great nuisance. Because that smell isn’t the sign of a poor hygiene but the symbol of his social status. And that status, the reality he comes from, will be stuck with him forever even if he was to sit on the highest throne of the world. If Kitaek strives to better his condition, right when he believes to have elevated himself, his smell clings onto him reminding him where is it that he really belongs to. It is impossible for him to become different.

Moving over to Kiwoo, by the end we see him in Dahye’s room, standing absorbed in thought by the window and asking her “Do I really fit here?” and few minutes after he is collecting the rock from his backpack and going downstairs most certainly go get rid of the maid and her husband, the only obstacle to his family ascending. But tragicomically enough, his chosen weapon ends up crushing his own head. I would say that stone is among the main actors of this movie. When he receives it from Min together with the tutoring opportunity, it becomes for him a sort of prophecy, awakening in him an ambition, a sense of hope. Perhaps the hope to climb the mountain that rock comes from. In the end he actually goes on top of that mountain, finally leaving the rock in the river, maybe hinting at the fact than rather than wealth it brought him misfortune. But until that moment that rock sticks with him all the time, just like his helpless sense of hope: at their lowest, on the night of the flood, he sleeps holding it over his chest. But ultimately that hope deceives him and his family more cruelly than they deceived anyone before.

There is no happy handing for them: his sister dies, his father disappears, it’s just him and his mother left exactly where everything began. The same house, a new host and Kitaek being the new parasite, the story repeats itself unchanged. Now it’s at the ending that the director becomes the most cruel. We’re made believe that despite everything Kiwoo could really save his family from the despair they lived their whole life, I believed it, you believed it, everyone believed it, only for our imagination to be crushed on the sight of Kiwoo in the semi basement, daydreaming about a better future when he will free his father. Personally I take it as an open ending: what condemned the Kim family to their tragic ending was probably the lack of morality they acted with. I want to believe that Kiwoo will get a second chance in life, hopeful that he will use this opportunity righteously. Being honest, just like being nice, is easy when you’re rich, but it takes courage when there’s no reason or reward for it.

I guess it's hard for me to feel 100% confident in Bellarke endgame because I feel like what has been said during interviews were not hopeful at all. I know viewers should not understand a show with interviews But you can assume actors know their character the best, right ? And that show runners have a deep understanding their characters too ? So why would Eliza say ''C will never be able to love someone the way she loved L/she was the one for her'' or that Jason said Cl*xa were soulmates??

No one is asking you to be 100% confident in bellarke. Watch the show. See what you see. Put the clues together. Enjoy the narrative tension.

If you were 100% confident, then there would be less tension, you would not feel real fear for the characters. But knowing what we know about the 100 and that all the characters are under threat of having their entire life, goals, dreams and loves destroyed, that means we are more attached to the outcome.

This is a narrative technique to make the audience care more. No one ever cares about the red shirts, because we know the red shirts are nothing but plot devices. But to make narrative matters worse, attempting to use red shirts to increase tension means that we never really FEEL tension or worry for our main characters. Because we know that redshirts will pay the price, not Captain Kirk or Spock or the rest of the mains.

In other words. JR WANTS you to be unsure. He’s doing it on purpose. And sometimes it seems like the social media is DESIGNED to cause worry, because the plot itself, the narrative, seems to indicate that Bellarke is assured, is true love, are soulmates. So the only thing they can do to make it uncertain is to say, on social media, “but are they really?” The other thing they can do is make us uncertain of the genre. We see a romance story in Bellarke and romance stories REQUIRE a Happy Ever After Ending or at least a Happy For Now Ending. But The 100 is ALSO a post apocalyptic action story where anyone can die. The subplot of Bellarke seems to be an epic romance, while the main plot of The 100 contraindicates the surety of the happy ending with the possibility of tragedy and loss. Thus we have doubt. Pretty sure that’s intentional.

We can’t be 100% sure about the ending of The 100 until we see the actual ending of The 100 next year and we have to make peace with the fact that WE CAN NOT READ THE FUTURE UNTIL IT IS WRITTEN.

Maybe that’s the problem with fandom. We want what we want and we want it right now, even if getting it right now would ruin it in the long run.

Oh. That is called lack of delayed gratification. Oh, fandom.

As for the social media and interviews, I have to challenge your reading of what you have seen on social media. Because you say that JR said Clarke and Lxa were soulmates, but you ignore the fact that he actually said that Clarke was Lxa’s soulmate, but Lxa was not Clarke’s soulmate. AND he said that Bellarke were soulmates (and then he showed us with season 5 and 6 as canon evidence of it.) So when you only take the JR quote that fills your heart with fear and ignore the part that confirms Bellarke, then your interpretation of the social media is both incomplete and biased. But since it is very hard to find all the various things that have been said in various places at various times, it’s hard to go back and get that more rounded POV. Listen, I may have pulled away from fandom now, but I spent years tracking down all the anti quotes to see what was said and the pro quotes too. None of JR’s quotes are as anti bellarke as the antis would have you believe. They are far more ambiguous and he has said just as many PRO bellarke things as he’s said ambiguous things. And far more pro bellarke things than he’s said pro other ships. But this is ignored by the CLs, the Blorke antis and the anxious bellarkers.

You just can’t ignore the things that dispute your claims, whether in canon or meta commentary. You need to take them into account, whether that means you accept that they dispute your claim or you find a way to have them make sense with your previous theories.

I don’t ignore any of the things I’ve heard, even if someone else claims they are anti bellarke. And even evidence. I search out corroboration. Evidence. Canon. Gossip and meta are not canon nor evidence. Someone’s authority is not enough to dispute canon.

For instance. When Eliza said that Lxa was Clarke’s true love and she would never love that way again, you must take a look at the context of the statement. First, you would have to realize that she said nearly the same thing about Finn after the season where he died. And then you would have to realized that Eliza was speaking as Clarke from the part of canon that had Clarke grieving and actually FEELING that, as an 18 year old suffering a traumatic loss. Also you should remember that Eliza did NOT have access to the future scripts and did NOT know what JR was planning. That was said after season 3. But what did Eliza say after season 4? She actually said that Clarke loved BELLAMY. Yes. She did. and I think she said they were soulmates, too, but I’m not sure. Since season 4 she has never said anything to dispute that Clarke loved Bellamy.

And then, as you look at the CANON (which always takes precedence over cast and crew commentary) you will see that her 2199 calls were directed at the person she loved who never responded. Not her mother. Not Lxa (and let me be clear, if she wanted comfort from her true love who she never heard back from then talking to Lxa would have served the same purpose as talking to Bellamy.) No. She talked to BELLAMY, and it was imagining HIM that kept her alive.

To continue with who Clarke loves in canon, in season 5, Clarke told Madi that yes she loved Lxa, but how she loves Madi surpasses how she loved Lxa. So in canon, Clarke loves Madi more than Lxa. Lxa is not the only love or most loved. As to the difference in love? Absolutely. She will not love anyone the way she loved Lxa. Her love for lxa was desperate and passionate and painful and political and tied up with the life and death of her people. This does not keep her from loving Bellamy as her soulmate, who she needs, who she trusts, who she has faith in, who keeps her sane and keeps her centered. Those are two different types of love. One does not keep the other from happening. Or from being real. This world does not actually DO the concept that you are only allowed one love and after that love dies you are doomed to be alone and incomplete. (witness, for a parallel, Jake and Abby and Kane.)

You cannot say that JR said CL were soulmates so that means Bellarke is in doubt without also then accepting that JR said Bellarke were soulmates so then that means they are confirmed.

How do the two conflicting statements work with the story we’ve seen is the question you should be asking, instead of hearing a doubt inducing statement and then forgetting all the rest of the analysis and canon and subsiding into a frenzy of “the sky is falling! the sky is falling!”

Relax.

Enjoy the story.

Pay attention to the narrative.

Look at the story from different perspectives.

Question the sm comments and theories and hold them up against canon to see how they fit, or don’t fit. When Eliza said L was the one, I remembered her saying F was the one. If there is only one, then how can she say that about two people? Because 18 year olds think that way. And broken hearts think that way too. It’s an unreliable narrator who thinks their momentary feelings are the truth of their entire life. And Eliza only knew what Clarke was feeling then, grief stricken and traumatized. She grew over the course of the rest of the season and if you ignore that, then your analysis is completely off base.

Remember that telling a story that engages us and keeps us guessing and addicted to watching means placing obstacles, doubts and real fears in the path of our favorite characters getting what they want. They are required, but they are not a sign that Bellarke isn’t the story being told. Rather the opposite. If Bellarke’s relationship is CONSTANTLY being challenged, and constantly evolving and developing, then that means Bellarke IS THE STORY.

If there is a romance that is NOT being developed, is not growing, is actually falling apart as the partners find their needs outside of the relationship then that relationship is NOT the story. Or rather, that relationship is not about bringing he characters together, but about whatever is tearing them apart. Whether that is a political dispute or his love for another girl or her independence and identity.

Ectober Week Day 7: Masquerade/Laboratory - This Is Not In Vain Chap.1: Familial In Vein

The weirdest things always happen to Danny. This time, apparently, his ectoplasm is sentient.

Danny walks down into the basement only to just seemingly get struck by two massive bolts of electricity. Promptly passing out on the floor.

Jack and Maddie only had a second to gape as the new invention both of them were fiddling with flat-out attacked Danny. Both passing out right after.

They come to before Danny, firmly confused by not being able to move their bodies....no, body actually.

Maddie: ‘what’s going on? Why does this body hurt and ache so much?’.

Jack: ‘not sure Mads, you sound like your bouncing around in my head’.

Maddie: ‘yours as well. I think, we were both holding the device right? Before it zapped Danny?’.

Jack: ‘yes, yes we were. But then. No that shouldn’t work? Danny-boy’s no ghost’.

Maddie: ‘he has ectoplasm in him Jack. That’s probably enough. But why does his body feel like this? It’s like he’s covered in tender bruising’.

Jack: ‘so we, are in, Danny’s body then? Since the SOS, Shadow Over Shadow, was supposed to let humans overshadow ghosts? And I don’t know Mads, maybe he was working out?’.

Maddie: ‘I think we are. But since Danny isn’t actually a ghost, I’m pretty sure it worked wrong’.

Jack: ‘of course! We must just be overshadowing the ectoplasm to a degree’.

Maddie: ‘then maybe...’.

Maddie tries moving but more fluid, tense up, and like muscles under-skin, rather than actually outwardly moving. Both of them picking up on a slight sloshing in Danny’s body that is decidedly very uncomfortable. Maddie mentally cringes as Danny jerks and snaps awake. Danny shakes out his arms, “what the?”.

Maddie: ‘maybe that wasn’t the best idea’.

Jack: ‘probably shouldn’t control any part of him. Except for communication maybe? Think he can hear us?’.

Maddie: ‘we’re likely in his ectoplasm not his mind. I’m sure sweetie can figure it out though...you did write down all the details right?’.

Jake: ‘uhhhhhh’.

Danny shakes his head and gets up, “okay that was weird”, looking around and tilting his head, “I’m pretty sure my folks were down here”.

Jack: ‘that was quick! That’s a Fenton for you!’.

Maddie: *chuckles warmly*

Danny walks over to the workbench -both parents noticing how his hip aches at the movement- and tilts his head down at the mess all over it. Grabbing a pencil and poking at one of the smoking devices, “okay, obviously that’s what zapped me. Let’s not do that again”, grabbing the schematics, which is pretty much just a drawing, no details or notes.

Maddie: ‘JACK! How is he supposed to even attempt to fix this?’.

Jack: ‘whoops, heh’.

Danny pulls out his phone and starts taking photos, “just in case there’s some side effects. Just reverse engineer some and fix the problem as needed”, chuckling, “hopefully Tuck won’t have to hack NASA again just to do that”. Slipping his phone back in his pocket and heading up the stairs, intending to snoop around for his folks some.

Maddie: ‘hacking? Tucker hacked the government?!?’.

After looking around for a bit Danny shrugs, “must be out hunting or something. Maybe I sho-”, Danny cuts himself off at feeling a chill through his body and feeling mist plume out of his mouth. Snapping his head to the side and crouching, moving forward silent and cautious.

Jack: ‘what was the cold? What’s he doing?‘.

Maddie: ‘seems like prowling? But I really don’t know’.

Danny sticks his head around the door, spotting Cujo and sighing with relief. Straightening up and walking forward, bending down to ruffle the pups' fur, “what’s up boy? What? Get bored? Let me see if I ca-”

Maddie: ‘Danny! What are you doing?!? That is a ghost!’, pushing and pulling to move away from the ghost.

Jack: ‘surely he knows....right?’.

Maddie: ‘it’s green and glowing’.

Danny jerks, wincing as his ectoplasm seems to spasm and splash against his vein walls, “OW, what the fuck?”.

Maddie: *mentally cringing* ‘sorry sweetie. It’s just, that’s a ghost’.

Danny waves off Cujo’s worried head tilt, “I’m okay. Body’s just being weird. No need to worry bud”, standing up and shaking himself off, “now let’s see about fetching your ball”, Danny hops up the stairs and digs around in his room. Tossing up a glowing green tennis ball, and chuckling as Cujo flings himself through the air to nab it.

Jack: ‘he definitely knows that’s a ghost. So why?’.

Maddie: ‘I don’t know, I just don’t get it. I want to make him stop, getaway. But...’.

Jack: ‘we can’t control him. We shouldn’t Mads’.

Maddie: ‘but...’.

Jack: ‘I know. But who knows what moving his ectoplasm around could do? And, and it’s Danny-boys life’.

Maddie: *sighs* ‘the thing’s probably tricking him. But I guess, sometimes we have to learn lessons the hard way’.

Danny smirks as Cujo leaps out of the window. Danny quickly rushing over and sticking his head out, looking down with a soft smile at the cute little head tilt Cujo’s doing. Chuckling, “ah a boy and his dog. Never been so damn ghostly. But hey, that works well for me”. Danny flings himself out the window and lands on the ground in a crouch, springing to stand upright quickly.

Maddie & Jack: !!!

Danny smirks down at the Cujo, “race ya? On foot though, body’s being weird”.

Cujo spits the ball at him which he easily catches as Cujo bolts off. Danny chuckles and shakes his head. Smiling wide as he gives chase, jumping over obstacles and occasionally sliding across the ground. Eventually springing past Cujo, turning his head to smirk at the puppy; who yaps back. As they make it to the park.

Jack: ‘I didn’t know Danny-boy was so athletic! Well, it’s a great skill for any future hunter!’.

Maddie: ‘......he never seems it’.

Danny throws around the ball with Cujo for a while, occasionally throwing it with some ghostly strength or jumping abnormally high to catch the balls Cujo spits back out at him. Both eventually tire of it and just lay in the grass. Danny absent-mindedly petting over the glowing fur. Watching the sky, “you know buddy, I think if you weren’t a ghost my folks would love you. Personally though, ghosts dogs better”, sighing, “is it odd that I’m on better and more friendly terms with ghosts than humans? I mean sure, Skulker shot me with arrows again and I might have punched him a few times more than necessary. But ain’t that half the joy? Sparing?-”.

Maddie: ‘WHAT!!!’.

Jack: ‘Skulker, whoever they are, is getting decked’.

“-And I mean really? There is something really satisfying in winning a tough fight. Plus, covered in my own blood, ‘plasm, and other assorted viscera, is a winning look for me. And at least Skulker, right, guy makes stellar lemon Creme pie. And humans, oof, how many of them consistently treat me well? Very goddamn few”.

Jack: ‘who’s treating him meanly? Bullies?’.

Maddie: ‘must be, school can be a hard time. I’m more worried about how he seems to like get injured....he doesn’t get hurt that much does he?’.

Jack: ‘he limps sometimes. What about his clothing? Any...blood, on them?’.

Maddie: ‘....I...haven’t done his laundry in years’.

Danny sits up with Cujo rolling around in his lap. Scratching the dog’s belly, “so fuck it. So what? Who cares... well besides my folks”, groaning, “do they have to be so bigoted and anti-ghost? And I kind of think that they’re trying to impress me with all the ghost hunter stuff”, shrugging, “which yeah, makes sense right? Not like Jazz is going to run FentonWorks in between all her schooling. And it’s not like they know anything about what I do with my time”.

Jack: ‘doesn’t get just hang out with his friends all day? Video games, going out to eat, that stuff?’.

Maddie: ‘we never actually ask. But that’s what I thought. Does he, does he really dislike how we are about ghosts? It’s not just some teenage rebellion?’.

Jack: ‘maybe we’ve been protecting him too much from the evil and harm they do?’.

Danny gets up and stretches. Cujo running in a little circle and yapping before just running off. Danny chuckles, “never much of one for my verbal bullshit huh?”, rubbing at his chest and sighing before checking the time on his phone. “Well I guess I should probably let my ‘plasm flow more normally”, prodding his chest again, “wound should be closed enough so that I won’t bleed any ‘plasm”, pushing a bit hard and wincing, “ahhh okay that’s still cracked. Damn”, before rolling his shoulders and letting his ectoplasm flow more normally through his chest. -both parents involuntarily jerking Danny’s ectoplasm from just how much pain is in Danny’s chest-

Danny shakes off the weird pulse or whatever, putting his hands in his pockets and starting to walk only to pause and tilt his head, “okaaaaay? This don’t feel right. It shouldn’t be this heavy?”, groaning and tilting his head, “wonderful, that whatever the fuck messed with my ‘plasm”. Danny turns on his heels and starts off home, grumbling, “probably should stick to the ground then. Don’t exactly feel like face-planting into cement today”, chuckling and shaking his head as he pulls out his phone to look over the photos.

Maddie: ‘what’s wrong with his chest? Why does so much hurt and what’s this cold ball?’.

Jack: ‘I...I don’t know Mads’ he tries to gently move around the ball, picking up that more ectoplasm seems to be being formed by it. ‘It, is this why Danny never seems to get less contaminated?’.

Maddie: ‘this, that, shouldn’t be possible’ poking at the ball and squeezing it a little.

Danny shivers slightly and looks down his shirt collar, quirking an eyebrow, “oh goddamnit, it hasn’t been that long since I’ve used you”, groaning and turning onto the street, “don’t tell me my Core’s also being messed with? I’d really rather not freeze over...again”. -at that the two make a damn point to leave the cold ball alone- Danny weaving through crowds while looking at his phone again. Easily able to sense where people are and how close they are due to his ecto-field.

Jack: ‘Danny’s got a core? Ghost core? How? And wow, he’s really good at navigating!’.

Maddie: ‘the shape, location, it makes sense. But it shouldn’t be possible-‘ she cuts herself off at feeling a chill go through Danny’s body again. This time clear it originated from the core.

Danny looks around and squints, quickly and smoothly navigating into an alleyway and waiting. Picking up that whoever is clearly following him.

Maddie: feeling the ectoplasm their possessing vibrate and grow staticy ‘what the?’, trying to make it stop.

Jack: ‘can, can Danny-boy control his ectoplasm you think?’.

Danny scrunches up his face and glances down at his, not invisible, hand. Growling at it, “oh come on. Now’s not the time body”. -both parents jerk, making Danny’s ectoplasm slosh, from the vibrating static returning and Danny’s hand becoming invisible- Dannh shake his head, “annoying”, before squinting at the alleyway opening.

Jack: ‘HE HAS POWERS?!?!??????’.

Maddie: ‘this, what, it shouldn’t, this makes no sense’ trying to return the ectoplasm to normal because this is just wrong.

Danny hisses, “for fucks sake”, and forcing his invisibility to reactivate. Then stilling and stopping his breathing as one of Vlad’s stupid vultures flies in and looks around. Danny rolls his eyes and slinks silently over to it.

Maddie: ‘Danny! WHAT ARE YOU DOING!?! YOU DONT HAVE WEAPONS!’.

Jack: forcibly stopping Maddie from moving the ectoplasm their sharing, ‘Mads don’t! He’ll be in more danger if we mess with him!’.

Danny pointedly ignores the strange feelings going on in his body, slowly moving his hands out before grinning wickedly. Grabbing the birds throat and blasting it in the face with a green beam, chuckling darkly, “boo. I have no time for you today”.

Maddie & Jack: !!!!

The bird squawks, startled as Danny hits it over the head with his thermos. Promptly sucking it in after a second. Danny smiles at the thermos and shakes it, “frootloops vultures are always so damn stupid”. Danny looks around quickly before jumping and scaling up the building. -the parents both confused and disoriented- Danny crouches on the rooftop and looks around.

Jack: ‘oh, oh my Zone. Danny’s vision, he can see so far!’.

Both make a point not to try moving as they feel themselves/ectoplasm tingling and sparking in Danny’s eyes.

Maddie & Jack: !!!! ‘How?’.

Maddie: ‘it, the town looks beautiful like this. The colours, they’re so...intense? Defined? Glowy?’.

Jack: ‘so many details and his eyes, they seem to focus on anything possibly threatening’.

-Both them jerk and slosh Danny’s ectoplasm- Danny leaps off the roof and rolls to land on another. Booking it off after spotting the two other vultures. Stopping and sticking his invisible head over the edge of one building to stare down at the two birds.

Jack: ‘he’s hunting them? That’s great! But he seems to really know what he’s doing? Why wouldn’t he tell us he’s doing this? We could help?’.

Maddie: ‘......maybe...maybe he doesn’t want our help Jack dear’.

Danny flips and drops down on the two vultures, quickly pinning them with his feet and punching them in the face. Spinning the thermos around and sucking them in. Standing upright and nonchalantly walking back out onto the street, visible again.

Jack: ‘because we don’t like ghosts? Like he was saying earlier?’.

Maddie: ‘I think so. But why? They should be disliked’.

Danny’s phone goes off, so he digs it out of his pocket and looks down at it. Chuckling at Tucker’s face before picking up the call, “what’s up Tuck?”.

“I’m bored that’s what”.

Danny shakes his head, “well then I've got no excuse to not bounce my ghost weirdness off you”.

“Goddamnit, I was hoping for a movie or some shit. What’s going straight strange in ghost ville?”.

Danny flips over his hand a few times as he avoids being touched by people on the street, “my ‘plasm’s being weird. Feels heavy, is randomly turning off my abilities, and it feels like I’m startling it. Which is a mind trip and a half”.

“Well maybe it’s gained sentience? That’s exactly the kind of weird that would happen to you”.

“Tuck, that honestly would be impressive but also really horrible. Just how weird do you think I am?!?”.

“Dude, you got turned into jello once”.

Maddie & Jack: !!!!

“At least that had an understandable and obvious reason? I’m pretty sure a little electrical shock shouldn’t create sentience”.

“Well why don’t you ask it?”.

“You just want me to make a fool of m-”, -the two, seizing the opportunity, make a point to slosh and run themselves/Danny’s ectoplasm around and through his veins- Danny pauses, blinking, “oh Ancients. Fuck you Tuck”.

Laughter, “am I a good guess or what?”.

Danny looks down at himself and promptly walks into an alleyway. Making a point to hold his hand over his phone's mic. Grumbling, “why me?”, clearing his throat, “okay then. Ectoplasm? Just, like, fuck this is weird, slosh around in my left foot?”. -the two do as asked-

Maddie: ‘Jack dear, you are so lucky Danny has strange friends’.

Jack: ‘I’m grounded from blueprints aren’t I?’.

Maddie: ‘understatement’.

Danny tilts his head back, “oh Ancients. It had to be that invention”, Danny rubs his face and mutters into his hand, “well I’m not about to undo or, I guess, kill sentience. So I guess this is just my life now”.

Maddie: ‘right, of course. He wouldn’t know it’s us instead of some random new sentience’.

Danny scratches his head and puts the phone back to his ear, “I hate you. I don’t even understand how my folks could make something that could create sentience”.

“Dude, impossible is kind of come by for your halfa ass”.

Jack: ‘halfa? Is that slang?’ Deciding to try something out, he wiggles.

Danny tilts his head at the pulsing feeling and facepalms, “I mean you’re not wrong but still. Also, I’m pretty sure I just got asked what halfa is or something”.

“Congrats dude, your ectoplasm is a child you’re stuck mentoring now, CW would be so proud. Hey Danny’s ectoplasm, vibrate Danny’s eyes if you don’t know what a halfa is”.

“What? No! Don’t do-”, Danny covers up his eyes, feeling them vibrating and zapping, -the two easily able to see green light reflecting off of Danny’s hand-, “screw you Tuck. Now you absolutely are helping figure out how this invention works. Yes I’ve got blueprints. Ancients you’re a dick, I’m in public dude”.

Chucking, “no one ever notices your shit dude. Chill. But yeah I’ll help. Does your ‘plasm know who CW is, just out of curiosity?”.

Danny sighs, holds the phone away, “well? Just do the leg sloshing if you don’t”. -the two, feeling even more confused, do as they’re asked- Danny sighs and puts the phone back to his ear, “nope. So obviously it doesn’t have my memories or access to my brain. Which is weird, cause my ‘plasm is everywhere in me”.

“Danny buddy, just cause it’s flowing around your squishy thought organ doesn’t imply it can actually read your thoughts or memories. So when you coming by?”.

“Right now you salted fuck. The weirder thing is, it seems to be getting startled by me using abilities. It turned off my invisibility twice”.

“So what? It thinks you shouldn’t be able to do ghost shit? That seems pretty backwards dude”.

“Exactly so-” -the two slosh around in his leg again, hopping the question gets across- Danny sighs, “okay, yes it’s confused by the abilities”.

Laughter, “well then, have fun playing a game of twenty questions with something that can’t actually speak to you. I’ll see you in however long. But on a serious note, Danny’s ectoplasm? Yeah don’t block or stop the dudes powers. The guy would be an utter mess without them”.

“Hey! I mean, fine, I would be. But I’m more concerned about my, apparently sentient now, ‘plasm acting up while I’m fighting”.

“Then get it familiar with you using your shit. And shit dude, you should probably be a glow bug so it knows what that feels like. Cause you losing your form in a fight would be worst-case scenario. Plus, that has to feel really strange”.

Jack: ‘form? Glow bug? This is all so confusing’.

Maddie: ‘seems kind of...invasive too. He doesn’t realise it’s us’.

Jack: *sighing* ‘yeah, I’d rather Danny-boy tell us things intentionally. Trusting us’.

Maddie: ‘but he’s so secretive? It’s clear his contamination does so much more to him than we thought’.

Danny sighs, “yeah, but I’m a paranoid bastard. So I think I’ll break the ice slowly, clearly it has access to my senses so I’m just not gonna look at myself. Fuck this is weird. See you soon you prick”, snapping the phone shut and looking around the alleyway. Sighing, “alright ‘plasm. I’m gonna be doing something with you, well more so my Core ‘plasm but still, somethin’ I do a lot so just roll with it ya?”.

Maddie & Jack: !!!!! Having to try very hard to not do anything or try to hinder, feeling the core vibrate and pulse before cold energy shoots out and over Danny. Seeing the very bright light pass over his eyes. As all the regular ectoplasm/them starts vibrating and flowing more readily and closer to the surface. Feeling Danny’s feet leave the ground. !!!!!!!

Danny rubs his neck, feeling sloshing in his leg again, while he slowly floats up. “I mean, you were warned? And you’ll have to excuse me not being forthcoming with information until I know more about you. If the wrong people find out about somethings I keep to myself, it would put me or my family in a lot of danger”.

Maddie & Jack: !!!!!

Maddie: ‘we should be looking out for you, not the other way around!’.

Jack: ‘danger from ghosts? Or humans? We can defend ourselves well. I don’t want Danny-boy worrying about us...’. Moving around in slow circles in Danny’s back.

Danny blinks as he floats above a rooftop, tilting his head and laughing, “are you, are you trying to rub my back?”, shaking his head, “okay obviously you have some knowledge of things”. Shaking his head and kicking off from the roof. Floating up through clouds and looking down on Amity. “So this town yeah? My home”.

Maddie: ‘we...Danny....is flying. HOW?’

Jack: ‘it’s, really wonderful. Everything’s so small!’.

Maddie: ‘but how?!?? This isn’t normal Jack?’.

Jack: ‘it’s not hurting his body, he’s having fun, I think, Mads. And it’s nice. Weird’s a Fenton’s normal. Danny-boy is just really weird I guess. It must be because of whatever he did to make his ectoplasm, us, closure to his surface and all vibratie’.

Maddie: ‘he shot an ecto-beam earlier. Invisibility. Jack he has ghost powers, many. He’s not a ghost, this doesn’t make sense’. Making them slosh in Danny’s leg.

Jack: ‘Mads...’.

Danny shakes his head with a sigh and dives down, twisting and turning, still invisible, through the alleyways, speaking quiet -the two are past their shock enough to hear how his voice echos, like a ghosts-, “so flying’s a weird thing to you. Okay. Slosh around again of that’s because you think I shouldn’t be able to do this”, Danny squints his eyes -the two sloshing around in his leg- Danny nods, “okay then. Is....is that because it’s something a ghost can do? Slosh for yes by the way”.

Jack: ‘this is an annoying way to communicate’ sloshing around as asked.

Maddie: ‘at least we can. But this is still so wrong. He’s clearly good at this....comfortable with it’.

Jack: ‘I’m more bothered he hid it honey. Probably because of how we feel about ghosts. Mads, I think he doesn’t want us to dislike this. Whatever it is. So he just didn’t tell us because...’.

Maddie: ‘because he’s afraid. Oh sweetie, sorry. I, okay, no matter how wrong, I don’t want him feeling we dislike something about him’.

Jack: ‘it still feels wrong finding out like this. Not earning his trust. But it is fun. I can see why he likes it’.

Danny nods, “alright. Hmmmmm. So then I should only be able to do what a human can?’. -the two slosh again, a bit aggressively actually- Danny twitches and snorts, rolls his eyes, “now since I know you’re not in my mind so to speak. What’s my name? Slosh at the right letter. A, B, C, D-”, Danny smirks at the sloshing, “okay, last name then. A, B, C, D, E, F-”, Danny nods at the sloshing. “Okay, you know who I am then. So you are not just randomly spawned sentience then?”.

Jack: ‘that’s my boy!’ Sloshing and jerking around a bit more excitedly than necessary.

Danny jerks in the air, “okay, first off, ow. That’s my veins and shit you are running around in you know. Second off, do you actually want to be in my body? Slosh for yes, don’t do anything for no”. -the two make a damn point of not moving- Danny sighs happily, “oh Ancients thank fuck. No offence or anything, but I’d rather not have another random person in me. Especially controlling part of me. I’ll see if I actually decide to believe you though”, Danny grins, seeing Tucker’s house, promptly flying inside.

Tucker waves at Danny -the two parents jerk, caught off guard by the light flashing over Danny’s eyes again and feeling themselves/Danny’s ectoplasm sink deeper- Danny holds up a hand, “before you say anything. It seems this is not random sentience, but at least one actual person. They’re not being a dick so clearly they are a Fan of me but I don’t cook in Frying Pans with them”.

Maddie: ‘? You cook with us? What does cooking have to do with anything?’.

Jack: ‘we’re definitely fans though’.

Tucker groans, “well that’s more complicated. Blueprints”.

Danny tosses his phone over and flops to lay down in a beanie-bag chair, “tell me about it. They claim they either want out or this was an accident. But well, people lie, no offence whoever you are”.

Tucker snorts, “well at least you can communicate to some degree”, pointing at Danny, “also this sounds like your ‘plasm is being overshadowed”.

“Pretty sure not even ghosts can do that and I’m sure that whoever is human”, twitching his leg slightly at the sloshing, “okay yes, human. Which makes less sense than if it was some really weird ghost”.

Jack: *laughing* ‘yes ghosts can do some strange things!’.

Maddie: ‘which you seem to be able to do too. But...you’re not a ghost so...I guess it’s sort of okay’.

Jack: *chuckling slightly* ‘he still can’t hear us’.

Maddie: ‘he’s going to figure out it’s us in here. We’re going to have to talk about this...what he can do. Not to mention all the pain his bodies in. We shouldn’t get our words wrong...I, I don’t want to upset him’.

Jack: ‘....yeah. He didn’t choose to tell us, show us, this. Least we can do is not bug him about it. Though I am super curious! How’d he get these abilities? Learn to use them?!?’.

Maddie: ‘don’t bombard the boy with questions Jack dear’.

Danny shakes his head, watching Tucker flip the phone around and zooming in on the screen randomly, “Danny dude, have you even looked at any of this yet?”.

Danny shakes his head, “naw, Cujo showed. Puppy gets what puppy wants. That whoever wasn’t to pleased about me getting close to the green glowing dog”.

Tucker looks up from the screen, looks to the side and pulls a face, before looking at Danny, “so let me get this straight. You got zapped, cause that’s definitely what this does, by your folks invention. Now you’ve got someone overshadowing your ‘plasm who is seemingly confused over the abilities and seemingly doesn’t like ghost”.

Danny raises an eyebrow, “yup. Sounds about right”.

“Danny, you’re a fucking idiot. Have you seen you’re folks today?”.

“This morning up, but not since after dinner”, Danny screws up his fave and goes wide-eyed, “oh fu-”, only to get cut off by something impacting the wall and blowing up.

Maddie & Jack: !!!!!! ‘DANNY!!!!’.

Danny quickly transforms and grabs Tucker, turning them both intangible and flying out. Depositing Tucker on the roof. Both look over the ledge, Danny grumbling, “Ancients shit, Walker. Damn”.

Jack: ‘who? What’s going on? Why’d that ghost attack Tucker’s room?’

Maddie: ‘I think he knows a lot of ghosts we don’t. I wish we could help’

Jack: ‘do you think he’s been using these powers to fight ghosts? That that’s an enemy of his? That’s what I’d do if I could fly and shoot lasers’

Maddie: ‘I sure hope not! That’s so dangerous! With us is one thing but clearly he doesn’t hunt with us’

Tucker grabs Danny’s shoulders and spins him to face him, pointing at Danny’s face, “before you go off”, gesturing at the rest of Danny’s body, “you, probably, two. Let him do his shit, he’s good at it”, pointing at Danny’s face, “fuck your life dude”.

Danny glares, “know that I am pushing off my mental freak out. Watch out for his goons”.

Danny jumps off the roof, invisible, and glides around slowly, watching Walker pick through Tucker’s room with a frown. Whispering with a bit of bite, which is a bit threatening with the echoing voice, “no controlling my ‘plasm. Talk later”.

Danny listens as Walker huffs, annoyed, “the little punks not here”, turning to two of his goons, “I thought the tracker said his signature was here”. One goon shrugs before all four freeze at the sound of Tucker’s parents coming home. Walker grins, “well all the same. It seems we have good bait”.

Danny clenches his fists and bares his fangs in a soundless snarl. Promptly lunging at Walker and uppercutting him, blasting ectoballs at the two goons, sending them flying.

Maddie: ‘were those fangs? And- LOOK OUT!’ She really has to try not to interfere as the ghosts start blasting at him.

Danny shoots up through the roof, avoid one of the goons strange blasts. Quickly getting punched in the gut by Walker. Danny just growls and kicks his stomach, blasting him in the face. Smirking for only a second as he catches Tucker capturing one of the goons out of the corner of his eye. -the two parents actively cheering over that- Danny spins and ducks, avoiding a pink ecto-beam. Snickering, “you’ve always been a bad shot whitey!”. Flipping around and making a shield as Walker teleports behind him and tries to blast him again.

Jack: ‘he’s really good at this! You kick his butt son!’.

Maddie: ‘he shouldn’t be...but I guess it’s good’.

Danny slams his feet on Walker’s chest, making the two slam onto a rooftop. Danny blasts him in the chest a few times and grins a fair bit maliciously, grabbing Walkers collar, growling, “you don’t come after my friends family”, and punches him in the face. Grabbing his arm and flinging him into a building.

Walker grunts and stands, pushing away bits of brick with his hands, glaring at the floating Danny, “if you would just stay in a cell where you belong half creature, they’d be left alone”, shrugging with a cruel grin, “maybe”. Before blasting another beam at Danny. Which he avoids easily. But apparently that pisses Walker off, as he changes sizes into a more massive form. Danny just flips around his thermos with a cocky grin.

Maddie & Jack: !!!!!!!!!!

Danny expertly avoids Walker’s grabbing hands and spins through the air, firing off blasts, “big target! More areas to hit!”. Flying down, away from more pink ecto-beams. -the two, startled and worried, try yanking Danny down to avoid a car that was thrown- Danny jerking, snapping as his flight just cuts out for a few seconds. Car sailing over him only to get hit by something that binds around his chest and arms, pinning them and yanking him towards the ground. Danny gritting out, “that was not helpful. Getting hit by the car was preferred. The goal actually”. -the two a little freaked and struggle a little as they find they can’t really move-

Danny hits the ground hard. Coughing and sputtering but rolling across the ground to hide in an alleyway.

Maddie & Jack: !!!!!!!!!!!! DANNY!!

Maddie: ‘s-sorry. Sorry sweetie. Ow. Be alright Danny. What is this? This feels awful’.

Jack: ‘son....’.

Danny pushes himself up the wall, going against the heavy gravity of the thing tight around him. “Okay, how to get this stupid thing off”, Danny manoeuvres around to try using a dumpster to get something out of his pocket. It’s obvious he’s making a point of not looking at himself. Smiling and grabbing what feels like a tube of lipstick before sucking and rolling through the open door of a building. Falling down the stairs and breaking his nose in the process. -which the two freak out a bit over- Danny chuckles, “well at least something broke my fall”, before adjusting the lipstick blaster to shoot off the bindings. Flexing his left hand and wincing slightly, “fantastic. More broken bones”, before flying through the roof as Walker goes to kick in the building.

Tucker’s shouting, “got the other one!”. Danny only chuckles as a response, before shooting at Walker again. Catching him off guard enough to slam his across the cheek with the thermos. Growling and punching him with his left hand, “stay out of my town”, then sucking him into the thermos.

Danny stands and pants a little, Tucker running up, “dude, why the Zone did you fly into the capture blast? You haven’t done that in years”.

Danny flips him off as he picks up Tucker and flies them back to his place. Both frowning at the destroyed mess.

Dropping Tucker on the ground and doing the light ring thing again. Tucker points at him, “hand, gimme gimme”.

Danny rolls his eyes as they sit on Tucker’s, thankfully intact, bed. “That wasn’t me Tuck. It’s fine though. Everything worked out”.

“Dude, there's blood and ‘plasm all over your face”.

Danny chuckles and grabs one of the towels, cleaning his face off but winces as he whacks his nose, “right forgot about that”. Tucker works on setting Danny’s hand bones as Danny sets his nose with practiced ease.

Maddie: ‘I, Danny what? You forgot?!? This, you’re too good at it. Danny...’.

Jack: ‘Tucker’s, he’s good at this too. We don’t even get hurt like this’.

Maddie: ‘we don’t fight like that. We hunt. That wasn’t hunting. It was a fistfight. A ghostly fistfight. And now he’s hurt’.

Danny sighs as he holds his nose, “so um, slosh if you're my folks. Could really use knowing that”.

Tucker raises an eyebrow, “slosh? Really?”.

“Oh fuck you”, nodding at the sloshing feeling before looking to Tucker, “yeah, it’s my folks and I’m a moron for not realising that sooner”.

Tucker chuckles as he wraps Danny’s hand, “a lovable moron who’s going to have one Hell of a conversation after we, or more specifically I, fix this”.

Danny just grunts with a frown.

Maddie: ‘he’s all broken and that’s what he cares about?’

Jack: ‘he must really be worried what we think then’

Maddie: ‘I think...that he gets hurt like this a lot. But how have we never noticed it?’ Sloshing and swirling around near his hand and nose.

Danny screws up his face, “okay that feels very weird. But don’t worry, I heal pretty, um, fast. And yes I get hurt kinda often, um sorry for not telling you?”.

Jack: ‘fast enough that we never even notice? Must be because of the ectoplasm’.

Maddie: ‘at this point, I think everything is affected by his ectoplasm. I don’t like it. But if, if he’s okay like this, I’ll deal. We’ll deal’.

Tucker snorts and starts laughing, shaking his head at Danny, “dude, maybe save the awkward conversation for when they’re not stuck in you, or where I have to suffer through it for that matter. Also, cats outta the bag so please fix my damn wall”.

Danny rolls his eyes, “pushy pushy. I thought you liked watching people squirm?”. Tucker chuckles, “not you, not like that. You’re supposed to be the tough one. You’ve earned the privacy”.

Danny blinks, “don’t go getting all deep on me”, before turning his head towards the gaping hole and flicking his hand. -the two mental gaping and trying not to react as they feel themselves/Danny’s ectoplasm feel like it’s stretching and bending. Only for bits of the wall and destroyed objects to start glowing and floating back to where they were. Seemingly healing as well. Both easily able to feel Danny’s ectoplasm was a bit depleted now and feeling tired-

Jack: ‘I feel like I need a nap’.

Maddie: ‘that must have used up a fair bit of ectoenergy. Telekinesis’.

Jack: ‘wonder just how much he can do! Mmmmm, hungry too’.

Maddie: ‘you’re always hungry dear’.

Jack: ‘think it’s his ectoplasm actually’.

Maddie: ‘....you’re....right? I’m hungry too. Ectoplasm gets hungry?’.

Danny looks over Tucker’s work before flopping to lay down, grumbling, “you know, I’m always reminded how glad I am that your rooms all ectoplasmicly rich”.

Tucker snorts, “yours is worse. Now nap you idiot. I highly doubt your folks will do anything weird. While I slave away like an overworked carriage horse”.

Danny flips him off but falls asleep anyway. -the two able to tell that he seems to be absorbing in ectoplasm, core processing it and replenishing his own ectoplasm-

Jack: *chuckles* ‘close enough to eating I guess! Slimy yet satisfying!’.

Maddie: *laughing slightly* ‘well let’s not run around much. Let him sleep, and let us, his ectoplasm, replenish’.

Tucker shakes his head at Danny and continues fiddling away, “now I highly doubt ectoplasm can sleep. Would be pretty strange if it did. And Danny would give me s-hassle for being protective”, Tucker pokes where he knows Danny’s ecto-field is around his foot, “Danny’s better for his weird. And you guys accepting him is kind of a big deal to him. I know you’ve seen some weird and confusing sh-stuff. Probably doesn’t make much sense and you’ve probably made your own theories. But if you think Danny needs to be ‘corrected’, just don’t. Drop it. That’s pretty well the worst thing you could do to him outside of trying to dissect him or something-”

Maddie: ‘WHAT!?! We would never!’

Jack: ‘he’s really attached then.... Glad he’s adjusted so well! If he doesn’t want it fixed then of course we won't’.

Maddie: ‘.....even if it’s still rather wrong’.

“-similar. His abilities are part of who he is. So if you hurt him by rejecting or trying to change him, I will never forgive you. Danny-dudes basically my brother. He’s saved my life and everyone’s lives more times than I’m sure I even know. He deserves to be treated right”. Tucker watches as Danny’s foot turns invisible. Snorting, “look at you, figuring out how he works. I’m assuming that’s you agreeing with me? Just do it again if so”. -the two promptly do. Even if it’s weird vibrating themselves- Tucker nods, “good. This is a pretty sh-stupid way for you guys to find out. And know that he would have told you on his own eventually. Someday. He wanted you to stop being so universally hateful to ghosts first”, getting up and grabbing a few extra screws, speaking as he sorts through all the different kinds for the right ones, “seeing as his pup showed, obviously you know he doesn’t hate ghosts. That he’s friendly with some. Well Danny probably won’t appreciate me saying this but I damn well am. He is friendly with a lot of ghosts. More ghosts than there are people in Amity. He will never accept or tolerate your hate for ghosts. So grow up and realise when you might be wrong, cause you don’t know shit”.

Maddie: ‘I didn’t realise he disliked how we were? are? so much. And he’s, he’s friendly with that many?’.

Jack: ‘I’m glad he meant to tell us. And Mads, Danny-boy’s good, he would never be friendly with cruel creatures. So what does that mean?’.

Maddie: ‘I’d like to say he’s being tricked, but....that many? He’s not that gullible. No one is’.

Jack: ‘so what then? I’m sure our science isn’t wrong’.

Maddie: ‘I don’t know Jack’.

Jack: ‘well maybe the animal ones can be okay easier? Like the puppy?’.

Maddie: ‘I’m pretty sure Tucker means more than just animal ghosts’.

Tucker smirks at the machine and grabs Danny’s foot, shaking it violently before springing away. Danny nearly grabbing him and snarling. -startling the two parents and making them a bit confused- Danny blinks before smirking at Tucker, “you’re getting quick. What is it?”.

Jack: ‘wow those are some reflexes!’.

Maddie: ‘he’s like a feral animal.....He’s that paranoid and on guard?’.

Jack: ‘with ghosts that’s good!’.

Tucker shakes his head, “you are such a nightmare to wake up but it’s great dodging practice”, lifting up the device, “just need another part from your folks lab then we’re good. Got a reverse switch already installed”.

Danny nods and gets up, clapping Tucker on the shoulder, “nice. You’re going to make some tech or engineering company very very rich”.

Tucker huffs, “excuses you? I’ll be running it and making myself very very rich. Though you know I’ll always be your technician. Now let’s get your folks out of you”.

“That sounds really messed up Tuck”, Danny wraps an arm around Tucker and flies them off to his house.

They phase through the lab ceiling and land on the lab floor.

Maddie: ‘I think he can do everything a ghost can at this point’.

Jack: ‘which is kind of cool. At least a little. I could see inside our floorboards!’.

Danny stretches and yawns some, “so whatcha need?”.

Tucker digs in a draw and fetches a weird glowing blue tube, an ectoplasm spinner, “this”.

“How, no seriously, how do you always no where everything is down here? Uh, no offence guys, it’s kind of a mess”.

Jack: ‘the sign of being put to good use! No worries Danny-boy!’

Tucker chuckles, “little easy to forget you've got tag alongs?”, Danny nods as Tucker puts the final pieces together and points it at Danny, “this is probably gonna hurt by the way”.

Danny just shrugs, “expected”, before Tucker zaps him and he promptly passes out.

This time Danny wakes up first, seeing Tucker’s face inches from his and nearly punches him in the face, “fucking Zone Tuck”.

Tucker shakes himself slightly, “dude, you weren’t just snapping awake. It was weird. But also kinda cool”. Danny flips him off before both of them look to the still unconscious parents. Jack groaning. Tucker finger guns at Danny, “and that’s my queue to leave”. Danny just rolls his eyes and sits in a chair, waiting for the pair to wake up fully as Tucker bounds up the stairs.

Maddie staggers up, slightly startled by Danny just suddenly being there to help steady her, him asking, “you good? Er, physically anyway?”.

Maddie nods as Danny helps Jack up, Danny coming to stand in front of them. Still short as ever and a fair bit wide-eyed. Danny rubs his neck, “soooooo, my body huh? Interesting place”.

Jack and Maddie Exchange a glance and promptly hug Danny, which they feel kind of bad over how he had tensed up, before relaxing and hugging back.

A LOOK AT DEATH STRANDING

A Look at Death Stranding

I accepted that this game would be no Metal Gear. I accepted that Kojima wasn’t going to restrain himself and just wanted room to creatively flex as he left behind his old life and his baby Metal Gear. I bought this game solely based on my familiarity with the Kojima brand, and I gave Death Stranding the old college try.

In the not so distant future, a calamity occurs. The dead begin to flood into our world, referred to as Beached Things or BTs. Death suddenly became tangible, it could be studied. There were no fluffy clouds, no halls of fathers past, but a beach. Though the chaos continued, any recently deceased bodies that weren’t burned soon after the fact caused voidouts, massive explosions that left devastating craters along the service of the Earth. And death only came faster for anyone unfortunate enough to be caught in the rain, the rain became Timefall, downpours of water that will cause drastic aging and bring anything beneath it to ruin in a matter of seconds.

You play as Sam Bridges, a simple courier traveling around and only living for the next delivery to keep him away from people as often as possible, but Sam is quickly dragged and coerced into a journey to fix America. One bunker at a time.

The purpose of Death Stranding is to make connections, delivering cargo between residents of shelters to convince them to join the information and printing network of the United Cities of America. Creating an infrastructure to increase the longevity of what’s left of the human race, to make connections.

And I find this fact ironic, because there is a distinct disconnect between what the narrative finds important and what the gameplay deems as important.

In Death Stranding, you carry boxes. You load Sam up with as many units of cargo as you can before he’s collapsing from the weight and walk him out into the outdoors. I found the gameplay loop rather relaxing actually, you pack your stuff, plan your route on the map, anticipate what problems you’ll be facing and print the equipment you think you’ll need whether you’ll need ladders for traversal, bola guns for bandits or anti-BT devices. I won’t say this was particularly “fun”, but I won’t deny there was a sense of satisfaction when I had the right tool for the right situation and I got the mission done without any particular disasters.

On the other hand, the cutscenes and narrative would say that the bigger obstacles to overcome are the BTs, Terrorists and extinction. By the end of the game, I can’t honestly say that my victories against bosses were properly lead up to by my treks with my many boxes. I probably would have thought differently had there been a visual representation of my progress like more NPCs chatting idly at UCA stations or seeing more of the communities in the underground shelters making structures outside.

There was only one point in the game where the terrorist threat became a challenge to overcome during gameplay. BTs were an obstacle to circumvent, they weren’t an active threat throughout the game and could be easily walked around if you checked for Timefall ahead of departing on your run, and the BT threat completely became a non-issue once I was given the cuffs to cut their umbilical cords. Mules were the most aggressive threat through my experience, but they were simply not important to the expanse of the game.

If this could have been fixed, I would have preferred the enemies the narrative emphasizes be aggressive, be present. Maybe not make the snowy mountains the most annoying part of the game, make it’s geography more diverse than some huge slopes to slog through. Bring back the audio recordings and let me listen to them while I walk around like in MGSV rather than making me read walls of text from NPCs I’m hardly invested in. At a point near the end of the game, there’s a final boss encounter. Above all, the game spent it’s length conditioning the player to prepare for encounters you’ll face, but at this point the story will dictate that you simply aren’t allowed to do so. That decision felt rather “player-dismissive”.

Additionally, optional temporal storms to enter would have been pretty cool.

On the matter of the online features, I won’t deny that there were times that the signs and structures of other players were very helpful. That is, when the features actually worked. My internet connection would die the moment my other family members woke up and started streaming tv shows. I’m actually hoping that Kojima won’t use these mechanics going forward because I just can’t rely on them all the time.

I think Hideo Kojima made a special experience with Death Stranding. I think in some regards, this game truly is a stand out, but at this point in time I’d argue that the lack of coordination between the different elements of the game prevent it from being a fluid, cohesive experience. Kojima has stated recently that if he were to make a follow up to Death Stranding, he would start from scratch and even focus more on making it a horror game. I’m all for that, focus, but I digress. I enjoyed various portions of Death Stranding and the game emphasizes the value of the imaginations of people like Kojima that thwart monotony in the video game industry.

S4 So Far: Fucking Why? A take on the use of emotions and romance as a character development/narrative device compared to past seasons

OK so I literally only slept 3 hours last night after watching the eps, and it was a shitty 3 hours, so apologies if anything is jumbled or incoherent. This post is about why Season 4 as a whole (at least with the character relationships overall, not just romance and not just Starco) feels to me like such a gigantic and unnecessary fundamental writing/focus shift compared to past seasons (especially 1 and 2, but also 3).

Curse was... obviously just a slap in the face, a full descent into “will-they-won’t-they” for no purpose other than dragging it out, since it CONFIRMED that Star and Marco have true mutual love for each other and basically directly stated to the audience in the dance that, no, this isn’t because of the curse, it’s genuine, but decided more love polyhedra and suspense and drama were needed. NOTE THAT I FULLY ADMIT AND ACKNOWLEDGE THAT THEIR FEELINGS ARE REAL, THEIR DANCE HIGHLY AFFECTED ME, AND IT WAS A VERY STRONG EMOTIONAL MOMENT. I’m not trying to imply that it meant absolutely nothing, not at all, I’m more talking about its purpose in the narrative than the emotions it contained as an isolated scene when I say “it had no purpose other than to drag things out.” Not sure exactly where we go from here, but I know Starco’s still endgame, and I also know that the route there is gonna be at least some level of disappointment to me. No way around that, but I think it’s worth looking at the rest of the season to dig into what just feels different in a bad way, because it’s really not just Curse. I feel like half the fandom is freaking out simply over just the fact that they claimed they didn’t feel anything anymore, and worrying about the suspense and drama over whether Starco would still happen at all, but that reaction is the goal of will-they-won’t-they, it’s why it works and why so few stories bother going beyond it, and I hate that. The point I want to tackle and criticize isn’t “I’m worried Starco won’t happen!” but rather a look at the overall handling of characters and relationships in the show narratively.

Let’s start with a look back on earlier seasons. I should hope that anyone could agree watching the first 2 seasons that Star and Marco’s relationship was very strongly built on a foundation of emotional intimacy, honesty, supporting each other and understanding each other, etc. Even if you’re not a Starco shipper, even if you’re anti-Starco as a couple and see them as entirely platonic, this much at least should hopefully be agreeable to everyone, because it’s like 80% of what the show contained until the middle of S2 actually got some plot going. Once we get into season 3, it becomes a lot more contentious among the fans, but there’s still a lot of this same stuff. Yes, Star and Marco spend less screentime together, but the majority of moments they share feel special, and have a strong emotional core with moments between them. Toffee, Lint Catcher, Sweet Dreams (sort of), Night Life, Deep Dive, Marco Jr., Booth Buddies, Divide/Conquer - every single one of these had a clear focus on why Star and Marco’s relationship, specifically, was important and special to them, and what made them work so well as a pair. Not just “they go on an adventure together to accomplish a goal.” Granted, not EVERY single episode in any season was like this, all three of the past seasons did have episodes that were just the basic adventure, but this was still an overall important part of the pacing of the show even if not omnipresent. And yes, absolutely, other characters had meaningful emotional moments and bonds with each other as well. Bonbon provided payoff on a genuine emotional honesty that Marco had been building up with Jackie in Sleepover and Naysaya, not just romance for romance’s sake but feeling like it had a purpose, it made total sense why Marco and Jackie had feelings for each other and why they did to some extent work together. Demoncism for Tom and Star was another such moment, capitalizing in some part on Star’s heartbreak, yes, but still serving as a turning point with a genuine purpose to both their characters as they tried to take steps forward as people first, and they bonded over that. Similarly, Is Another Mystery built off of Monster Bash for Tomstar and specifically Tom’s issues with caring about others. Things flowed as a whole across the season, even if not in a way that involved Star and Marco constantly on screen together.

Now let’s look at S4 as a whole thus far. As far as Starco is concerned... what moments like this have we had? When has their relationship been clearly special to them as a normal part of their day to day lives and not just in some epic WOW moment? I guess the end of Follies, and the hug in Ransomgram if you squint just a little bit, but even then, the actual emotional core of that episode really didn’t have anything to do with Star and Marco’s relationship with each other specifically. All their other episodes are just very basic “Star and Marco perform an activity for some episodic plot purpose” with no heart or soul put into their dynamic itself. Then we get to Curse, where apparently Marco’s feelings for Star are so strong that he’s constantly beside himself with emotion over them, and Star’s for Marco obvious enough that even dense as fuck Tom knows. In any past season, these things would’ve been firmly built up over the course of meaningful Star and Marco moments across a handful of segments leading up to it, so... why not now? We had a single tangential reference to it on Star’s end in Lake House Fever, and Marco saying how hard it’s been in Kelly’s World immediately beforehand, and that’s it. Not to mention that Marco apparently has budding feelings for Kelly (despite not having had any meaningful emotional moments with her Lava Lake Beach, a full season ago), after only one episode in Season 4. Bonbon had Sleepover and Naysaya for Jarco, Demoncism had Club Snubbed for Tomstar, what did Kelly’s World have? To me, right now, it feels like emotions/romance in teen relationships in the show 180′d overnight from a genuine part of their day to day lives and interactions that ebb and flow naturally and subtly to “le epic shipping drama with blushes and handholding to get people’s feely-weely uwuing to the max and ready to tune in for more,” and this feels like a HUGE departure from the storytelling method of literally everything before Season 4.

EDIT: Let’s not ignore Curse itself either, though. The idea of destiny vs free will, and Star and Marco choosing to be with each other on their own terms entirely is cool on paper. Issue is, LITERALLY NOTHING IN THE SHOW UP TO THIS POINT HAS GIVEN OFF THE IDEA THAT IT’S MAGICALLY FORCED. Many fans postulated it, but the show never brought it up as a problem to be handled later, and put explicit care into all their developments being entirely natural. The “Blood Moon Curse” was a problem with very little buildup in the narrative, created specifically to start an arc that as an isolated thing seems fine, but ends up just fucking with what they’d already developed and delays the outcome more and more.

Maybe, best case scenario, all of this is just kind of wonky pacing for no clear reason, the show is known to fuck that up even at its best, but the overall progression will still be kind of fine. Maybe we fairly quickly enter an arc where they try to live their new lives, free of feelings, and they allow themselves to get closer to each other without reservation because they think the feelings are gone and begin to find genuine joy and happiness in their relationship (as a result of the love which is still there, but the placebo effect that they think it’s gone makes them open themselves up to it after seasons of trying to hide from it). Maybe this results in Kellco not really going anywhere, with like one episode of them trying to make it work and failing because Marco’s heart still isn’t in it, and Tomstar also breaking up because they both finally accept that even the Blood Moon going away didn’t change anything, and we’re still set for a Big Moment somewhere around Cornonation-Beach Day to be Star and Marco fully accepting and recognizing their love, on their own terms, with every bit of denial and every obstacle behind them, giving us at the VERY least a handful of segments before the end to showcase some day-to-day canon Starco, show why it works for them and why it makes them so happy, and to show Tom (and Kelly too, maybe?) being OK with the situation and finding fulfillment in it themselves. Then the series finale could be the final push for Starco, from “our feelings are real and we want to pursue them without any doubts” to “I want to spend the rest of my life with you”. I’d still overall call this a lot of unnecessary drama and dragging, and still highly question everything about these first 8 episodes that I did, but I can’t deny there IS a symbolic/narrative benefit for Curse here. It could serve as an important milestone where Star and Marco finally put the heartbreak and hurt their feelings cause behind them once and for all, which is sort of what a lot of people thought it would be anyway, and if things still move forward quickly as part of an arc then it would still perhaps accomplish something meaningful and not just dragging for drama.

Or maybe the rest of the season will largely follow the pattern of what we’ve had thus far, with everything through Cornonation being almost devoid of anything special in relationships, just showing characters interacting normally without any real developments, Star and Marco spending time together and Tomstar and Kellco being almost entirely background, with maybe one segment apiece just for fun. Then Beach Day could be a Big Ship™ episode that compresses all the lack of emotion into one giant over-the-top romantic episode where they finally start realizing “huh after the last 8 episodes of our normal friendship, guess we do actually still maybe feel something special after all” and then the breakup(s) happen afterwards as a result of “welp guess it won’t work, it’s been fun” with the series finale being when Star and Marco finally get to say “YES AFTER ALL THIS I NOW REALIZE I LOVE YOU” and kissing once and that’s the end of the show. Which still would be satisfying if for NO other reason than the first 3 seasons lingering in my mind, I still will almost certainly love Starco as a whole no matter what. But holy mother of fuck this would be the dumbest shit ever, a complete reversal on how they’ve always handled everything, for seemingly no other purpose than because they wrote themselves into a corner where they wanted to force Starco to only be series finale, but they also made it so strong in the first 3 seasons that its natural progression would make it canon before then so they had to fuck with it, and would make me almost regret being anything more than a casual appreciator of the show.

So all in all I’m still, for the time being, at least willing to see where it goes I guess, because Star and Marco are still firmly embedded in my heart even if the show’s handling of them in this final stretch turns out to disappoint me in almost every way imaginable. Unless things TRULY go to shit, I have some plans for some fanworks post-canon that will, if nothing else, help me and maybe some of you make peace with the potential the show will likely waste in rising above romcom drama to portray Starco actually blossoming into a fully happy and healthy canon romantic relationship to rule them all. But I will almost definitely not be staying up into the morning watching and freaking out about episodes, if the show is going to appeal to the lowest common denominator of casual romance drama, I suppose I need to become a casual viewer to compensate.

Escapes did occur by increasingly clever means, but the DDR became just as clever at preventing them. If you go to Berlin, be sure to go to the Haus am Checkpoint Charlie, and give yourself plenty of time to see all the museum has on display. You´ll be amazed at the many ways people used to escape, mostly in the early years.

It’s also amazing the lengths to which a government will go to keep its people from leaving. All of the items pictured here were used, although not necessarily all at the same place. The devices to stop vehicles (anti-tank obstacles and anti-car trenches, as well as beds of spikes) served little purpose after the cement wall went up. Then most of the devices were aimed at individuals: patrol cars, search dogs, low tension fences, tripwire alarms, and various "walls" to give the person the deceptive feeling she had escaped before actually reaching the legal border. The most gruesome of all came late in the game, when fences were armed with shrapnel guns attached to trip wires. In essence, the would-be escapee shot herself!

A government that has to resort to such extreme measures is bound to collapse, and that´s just what happened. In October, 1989, the DDR celebrated its 40th anniversary amid great pomp and celebration. But all around the country, the protests were well underway, centering mainly in Leipzig and Dresden as well as Berlin. In a never-to-be-forgotten evening news broadcast on November 9, an unexpected statement was made that residents of the DDR no longer needed an exit-visa to leave the country. That was it!

In a very short time, all the checkpoints in Berlin were swamped with people wanting to "go West." They mostly wanted to visit relatives, sight-see, shop, and then come back. Thousands streamed across the border, and the department stores were wiped clean of things like microwaves, color TVs, boom boxes, and computers. At least one woman in labor came, so her baby could be born in the West. (Fortsetzung folgt)

Post Wall Facts

Things changed very rapidly in both East and West Germany. As the Mauerspechte ("Wall peckers"—a play on the word "Specht" woodpecker) chipped away souvenirs, and cranes took away large chucks of the Wall, the cement barrier almost disappeared. The DDR tried to maintain its independence through various changes in government, but it was almost inevitable that it would become part of the BRD, which already had unification built into its Basic Law. DDR money went out of existence quickly, and the official "Wiedervereinigung" (reunification) came on Oct. 3, 1990.

The euphoria, however, could not last forever, and reality sank in. You would have to read many books and watch many documentaries to come to your own opinion about what could/should have happened. Politicians made loud but unrealistic claims that misled thousands who took them literally. The East German economy all but collapsed since it had a highly deteriorated infrastructure and few quality goods to offer. The education system fell into disarray because many of the teachers had gotten their positions through political connections. It is fair to say, however, that many people were more "Opportunists" than "Communists." Life was tolerable and fighting the system had seemed hopeless, so they just went along and did the best they could. Wouldn´t most people in such situations?

Prejudices instilled by society (consciously or unconsciously) surfaced, "verified" by events of the day. "Westerners (Wessis) are selfish and think they know better about everything." "Easterners (Ossis) are lazy and greedy and just want hand-outs from the government." "Wessis are coming East and trying to take over our businesses and schools." "Ossis are coming West and taking our jobs and our hard-earned benefits." And, as always, a lot of the tension had to do with money. Who owned land or houses abandonded 30–40 years ago? The former owners who had made a good life for themselves in the West, or the current owners who had done all the upkeep? The government? Who was going to pay for all the rebuilding that was truly necessary in the East? Western tax money? Large private companies that were viewed with deep suspicion in the East?

These and other questions led more than one person to say, "The Wall in our midst has come down, but it will take a long time for the Wall in our heads to disappear." Maybe as the generation that never knew life with the Wall grows up, it will be able to overcome the prejudices of the past and feel itself as only a "German" once more, not "Ossi" or "Wessi."

Kara could have told Lena she was an alien. She could have been out as one.

I've just had yet another sleep deprived thought.

Kara could have tested the waters with Lena by simply stating she was an alien. This is actually something that Kara could have told Lena from day one. The big issue that effects Kara is that she is Supergirl, NOT that she is an alien.

Season one it wouldn't have been the best plan to come out as an alien because the DEO seemed to be very anti alien and apparently even though Superman had already been active in Metropolis Winn was on conspiracy theory sites claiming they had proof aliens were real and Kara even said there were 'no such things as aliens'. Probably the most ridiculous line to make the cut and it was the FIRST episode!

Exhibit A: Cat Grant states she needs to cut the Tribune because the Daily Planet had Superman and put him on the cover ALL the time. So people know that at least one alien exists. You could use the argument that maybe they didn't know he was an alien but that brings me to;

Exhibit B: When Supergirl has her first meeting with Cat Grant she talks about her escape from Krypton etc. And Cat is bored because it's the same exact story Superman told. So yes the world knows he's an alien.

Exhibit C: Kara meets James Olsen and immediately knows who he is because he's famously SUPERMAN'S best friend. James even talks about how Kara looks like him. Kara even sees the famous first photo that James took of him.

Exhibit D: Cat Grant talks to James about his connection to Superman.

So yeah the whole 'no such things as aliens' line is bizzare and I'm surprised it made the cut.

So yeah... Season one may not have been a good time for Kara to state she's an alien. Since aliens are treated with hostility by the DEO.

Season 2 however is different, more and more Aliens are arriving on Earth and it's common to have one as your next door neighbor. E.g Lena's detection device, that wouldn't exist if aliens weren't common place. Kara even talks about aliens living on Earth. Now it's not 100% OK being an alien in National City in season 2 since the alien bar is a big secret. But aliens being around isn't one. Look at the alien fight club?

Kara spoke up in defence of aliens, she awkwardly tried to tell Lena why she was against the device (which just to clarify NEVER went on sale and Kara and Lena saw each others point of views at the end of the episode.) I've often wondered if Kara would have found a way to destroy the device had Lena not wanted to show her how it works but that's a different story.

By season 3 though you have the alien amnesty act. Kara could have come out as an alien here. She didn't need to state what kind of alien she was, she could have just said she was one. Even if she didn't announce it publicly she could have told Lena her best friend. She could have waited to see how Lena would react. Personally I think Lena may have been surprised but it wouldn't change anything. Lena already proved she isn't Xenophobic. She went out of her way to save ALL the aliens of National City from being poisened and had helped Supergirl quite a few times. Lena being Lena may have been curious to know what kind of alien Kara is but she wouldn't have pushed if Kara didn't want to elaborate. Remember that Lena found out her good friend Sam was actually a homicidal world killer and it didn't change a thing.

Season 3 is where the issues really begin though. The Supergirl and Lena fall out. (More on that below)

Season 4? If Kara tells Lena she's an alien now Lena may be surprised that Kara didn't tell her sooner but she would probably still be OK with it. She would most likely be concerned for Kara's safety due to the COL. She has no reason not to be OK with Kara being an Alien, she's great friends with Brainy and she respects and gets on with Jonn etc. No the issue is that Kara is Supergirl.

Kara's secret from season one shouldn't have been about her being an alien. From season 2 onward she could have openly been out as an alien. No Kara's biggest issue is that she chose to be Supergirl and Clark is Superman.

Kara Danvers could have been an out and proud alien. She could have come up with any kind of story and called herself anything. How are humans going to know she's Kryptonian? She could have declared herself a Kryptonian but with no connection to Superman. A little harder to pull off because of the whole almost extinct race thing but doable. This being a secret identity show where glasses make you a different person means she could have been a Kryptonian reporter using all her powers but still a different person to Supergirl. "Oh Supergirl is from my home planet! What are the odds?"

Kara's biggest obstacle to being fully herself is ironically being Supergirl. Kara could have been Kara Zor El if she hadn't chosen to put the cape on. It's her role as Supergirl that puts those she knows and loves at risk.

But Kara could have still named herself as an alien. Kara could help more aliens as Kara Danvers if she came out as one. Franklyn works at Cat Co openly as an alien.

So Kara could have told Lena pretty early on she was an alien. If Lena rejected her which I seriously doubt she would have then Kara would have known that trying to be her bestie wasn't a good idea. But if Lena had been cool with it then they could have been happy like that until Kara felt Lena was trustworthy enough to know that she's Supergirl.

As I said above though, Kara wrecked any chance of the above being an option when she started to be an arsehole to Lena in season 2. The first time I feel she was an ass to her was when she looked at her like she was garbage when she and Superman landed at L Corp to talk to Lena and Lillian. This is where things between Supergirl and Lena started to go sour. If Kara had simply stated she was an alien she could have told Lena her boyfriend was one to and how Rhea had arrived. Kara wouldn't have had to tell Lena she was Supergirl just yet. Poor Lena would have just believed that Kara's boyfriend works with Supergirl, you know like she already thought! That way Lena wouldn't have been out of the loop and would know Rhea isn't trustworthy.

But then season 3 happened and Kara really believed that Lena was out to get her even though everything Lena was doing was to help save Sam. Hurting Supergirl never entered Lena's head but Supergirl kind of ignored Sam's issue of sharing her body with a homicidal world killer and just made it about herself. Accusing Lena of having ill intent towards her even though Lena had done nothing but help her and the aliens of National City since she met her. Kara made it even worse stepping over the line and getting James to break into Lena's vault. Kara moved outside of the boundaries of just having a Supergirl V Lena trust issue and decided to get one of the very few people Lena trusted to betray that trust. That's what hurt Lena the most, she told Kara she could never trust Supergirl again after that. Kara at least had the good sense to realise she messed up bringing James into it. Plus she shouldnt have trusted him, he absolutely threw her under the bus. James wouldn't have had to have come clean to Lena and feel like he needed to be honest if he had done the decent thing in the first place and just told Kara NO! Not break into L Corp (with Winn's help I might add, yet another person used against Lena) and get to the Vault only to grow a concience at the last second. He even lied to Kara and said he looked when he didn't. The decent thing to do was to tell Kara he simply didn't look and he wasn't betraying Lena's trust for her. Not half ass it, lie about it then drop Kara in it. James is the reason Lena knows Supergirl wanted to use him against her. Why tell her that at all? It only hurt her caused her more unnecessary pain.

Obviously Supergirl and Lena have reached an understanding and Lena absolutely adores Kara. But the big issue is Kara has let it go on for far to long. I don't think it's the lying about BEING Supergirl that would hurt Lena the most. I think she would be miffed about it and feel stupid but I think that is forgivable given the reasons Kara kept it secret. No it's the weird Jekell and Hyde act that Kara adopted in Season 2 and really came out in season 3. You cannot be someone's best friend one minute then go back to them as different person and treat them like crap the next. Kara should have picked a lane. If she didn't trust Lena as Supergirl she shouldn't have then gone to her and trusted her as Kara. Vice versa, if Kara trusted and loved Lena she shouldn't have treated her with hostility as Supergirl.

The betrayal isn't Kara being Supergirl, it's Kara's Jekell and Hyde act. It's Lena's best friend treating her like the enemy and even trying to get her boyfriend to betray her to. Then going back to her as Kara and being her best friend, listening to her problems with Supergirl. Showing faith and trust in her as Kara then suspicion and distain as Supergirl. Plus everyone else Kara knows being in on the secret to.

Lena would understand that Kara kept it secret to protect her the same as Lena kept secrets to protect Kara and James etc. But she won't understand and shouldn't have to understand that she was treated like crap by her best friend when all she had ever done was help her. Oh and never thanked for saving her life or for that bloody suit.

So yeah, Kara could have told Lena she was an alien much sooner. It's not like Lena is going to connect her to Supergirl since the writers won't allow it. The glasses as a secret identity thing is funny but only if it's consistent (Maggie ??) And only if you don't have almost every main and supporting character knowing the secret to. But not the woman who saves Supergirls ass and the city probably more than she herself does.

Lena Luthor wouldn't have cared Kara Danvers was an alien, but Lena Luthor will care that Kara Danvers is Supergirl and lied about it. Quite frankly I want Lena to be miffed at her for it, I wouldn't be so forgiving if my best friend had treated me like that. But I would eventually forgive her.

It's going to be even worse it Kara basically allows Lex or Lillian to tell her.

Kara should have pulled up her big girl Kryptonian pants and just told Lena regardless of consequences.

Chapter 141: The Eve of Parallels

So in this meta, I will try to explain my personal thoughts on the chapter for all the characters involved, and here I want to say that I do not share Viktoria’s opinion on HInami’s part in TG. For me she has always been of great importance and despite being used as a plot-device several times, her development and personal road are not to be neglected. Now here are my thoughts about these characters!

Tooru Mutuski

I’ve talked about Mutsuki’s twisted personality before, and this chapter shows just another step downwards the spiral of despair, the hopeless journey of Eyepatch 2.0. There was another meta floating around that stated the obvious parallel between Kaneki and Tooru, which differs only in its end - basically, it predicted that Mutsuki would die in a final battle against Suzuya. I adore that meta cause the symbolism is absolutely on point, but I will not expand more on that. I’m just pointing this out cause I will talk about parallels a lot now, hence the title.

Just like Kaneki, Mutsuki was associated heavily with eyes and eye-motifs. In chapter 141 of the original, the first words in the chapter are Kaneki’s last “dying” screams, after his eyes were gouged out by Arima. Well, this chapter starts with Mutsuki vs Yomo, and more specifically, Yomo’s eye being hit by Tooru’s knife.

We have seen this before already. Mutsuki always aims for the eyes in battle. They are his strong point, cause he has an amazing visual perception in battle, and is already wearing an eyepatch, so by blinding his opponent, he instantly raises his chances of winning a lot. In his confrontation with Torso in the taxi, he sliced up his eyes. He later gouges them brutally out after he escapes the cave in Rushima. He then makes his re-appearance by shooting Seidou straight in the eye with Juuzou’s knife. And now again, he aims for the eye of Raven-kun.

On this panel, we have emphasis on Mutsuki’s ghoul eye, or in other words, he is completely blinded by his psychotic urge to spread terror and kill everybody against him. This was what lead to Kaneki’s demise as well, he wanted to eradicate every evil ghoul on his way. This could mean that Mutsuki will frame-out soon, probably feasting on the almost surely dead Aura, and rampaging towards Touka, where he would find Juuzou who will have to kill him. That’s what I believe will happen, I do not have any evidence, it just feels plausible.

Shinsanpei Aura

Sigh, one of my least favourite characters, if I have to be honest. But again, his story is not to be neglected and for all we know, he might retreat to his old self soon enough, once he finds his inner peace, maybe by understanding the ghouls’ position.

This whole chapter has been about tragic paths and Shinsanpei’s path is marked by his suppressed inferiority complex. Once he was given the power to murder as an investigator, he gave in to it and embraced the pleasure of feeling stronger than the ghouls he killed. When I read this chapter I wondered, why did he not run away? Tooru was immobilized and he had little chance of defeating Yomo. Was he scared of the shame, the guilt? My theory is that his character’s role is a “Hide wannabe”.

While Hide offered his comfort to Kaneki while he was lost in the sewers (and maybe even let him take a bite out of him?), Aura saw Mutsuki becoming a mass murdered and decided to just play along - because that was a convenient way to get to Kaneki. It was too late to help Mutsuki, or at least that’s what he thought, so he just hopped on the “Kaneki will die” bandwagon and now we’re here. I am not saying that he follows Hide’s steps. He just fits into the role. Kaneki is to Hide what Tooru is to Aura. Not exactly though, and this is why they will both reach their endgame pretty soon, at least in my opinion.

And just something I noticed, I am almost 100% sure that Aura has been cannibalizing as well, cause there is no way he learnt how to use a detached kagune or form an eye on his kagune just by looking at Mutsuki.

Renji Yomo

As for Renji - ouch. All that beating must have hurt a lot. But anyway, with him there are less parallels than with the other characters. The only thing I can personally think of is this - he is Touka’s uncle, and even if Mutsuki doesn’t know this, he is still fighting so Touka can escape. Which makes him another obstacle in Tooru’s way to reach Touka, and by extension - Kaneki.

In a similar manner, Amon was in Kaneki’s way in TG and they both suffered severe wounds after their battle. Afterwards, Kaneki was defeated by Arima and Amon was defeated by Tatara. Now we have a similar situation. If Renji is Amon and Mutsuki is Kaneki, then the parallel is a bit grim, cause that means that Yomo will soon take part in another battle, only to be defeated there. I predict that he will be subdued by Suzuya Squad, and I am not sure whether or not he will see Touka ever again.

After all, his life philosophy is to “live while losing others” and if he loses everything, then he will not have anything to live for. I just hope that Mutsuki does not creep behind him in the next chapter while framing out,cause that would not be pretty.

Juuzou Suzuya

He is the new Mr. Reaper. I don’t really have anything much to add here, to be honest xD

There were already tons of metas about him and Arima and the overall parallel is pretty well-outlined. The only difference that exists here is that Juuzou has no personal motivations. I hope he gets to spare Touka and Hinami in the battle, but I doubt it. He will fight with whoever becomes the main threat, whether it is Touka and co. or Furuta starting to get on his nerves. Which means that if he encounters Mutsuki in a deranged frame-out state, he will not hesitate and will murder him on the spot.

I’ve always personally rooted for Juuzou going astray and becoming a solo player, because neither side fits him too well. He has said it himself, peace is not really his thing so I bet that he will play on his own agenda at one point or another.

Touka Kirishima

As for Touka, the poem about the rotten womb may still be in game, the fact that Hinami got a blow to the abdomen instead does not guarantee that Touka will escape totally intact from this fight. I am sure that somebody will come to the rescue and help Touka and Hinami, because otherwise they are done for. Ishida said it himself, a force that can stop the S3 Squad is not to be found underground.

I find it kinda ironical that this time Kaneki is above while Touka is underground, not the other way round. Kaneki is actively being kept away from the fight, but I think this will lead to his reunion with Hide, cause he is also above the surface this time.

And maybe, just maybe, Hide and Kaneki will both get to Touka in time, cause we don’t really know where Kaneki is during Touka and Juuzou’s fight (in that 6 hours interval).

So back to Touka, I think there are numerous ways the next chapter can go:

1) Hinami will fall down and Touka will have to rush to her side. Just as Juuzou’s blade hits her, somebody will intervene - Ayato, Kaneki, Amon, Akira, the list is long.

2) She will be forced to retreat and will wander in the sewers only to meet Mutsuki and we will have another epic fight and here the baby might be in actual danger. But still, we need to know why she brought flowers to Shinohara so I think she will stay where she is for now.

3) Juuzou will somehow change his mind and will attack Furuta, and here Touka and Hinami will both have a chance to escape.

Hinami Fueguchi

I saw many people saying that Hinami has been practically useless in the long run and has only been used as a plot device and a damsel in distress. I can see why some people think so - the Doves arc in the original and the Cochlea arc in :re were both centred around Hinami being saved/protected.

But many people fail to notice her amazing development and her overall place in the story. Strength-wise she has matured a lot and can now use her kagune better than ever.

Personality-wise, she has become the complete opposite of what many people bring her down to. She has joined Aogiri Tree for the sole purpose of learning how to be strong enough to protect her loved ones. She musters the courage to become an integral piece of Aogiri, as she is promoted to an executive in just 2 years. She appeared to save Kaneki from Takizawa, a very powerful ghoul as well, and despite the fact that she did not manage to defeat him, she smacked him well enough for him to use his kakuja. On several other occasions, she was the main protection as well. She defended Ayato and the others when fighting Kiyoko and Mougan, she defended Touka from Hajime and now she took another blow by Juuzou to help the others survive.

I find some symbolism in her kagune. She inherited both the defensive kagune of her mother and the attack kagune of her father. While we did not get to see her father fight, we saw her mother against Mado, and Ryoko showed that all she cared about was protecting Hinami. While every mother would do this, this left Hinami traumatized and made her lose her belief in her own strength until she had to defeat Mado on her own. And the fact that she has an offensive kagune as well makes her an even more dangerous opponent. And this is why she will live on, unlike her mother, cause she has been born into this world to become better than her parents. She will not only defend her loved ones but she will also live on for them and won’t become a tragic memory.

As for this chapter as a whole in her development, I think that she will recover from the wound and as I said, somebody will interfere. That’s just Ishida’s style ;)

And one last thing towards the Hinami-antis, I think that her role in TG :re is far from over, and she is not there just to serve as Touka’s walking “plot armour”. She will become one of the faces of ghouls in the future, serving as a bridge between humanity and ghouls. She has been more humane than most human characters and her weaknesses have always turned into strong points eventually.
