Honestly honestly the most romantic moment of the entire series is when Neil talks about how he'd never gotten to travel for fun before and the Foxes are planning to take him to the mountains, and Kevin starts to protest that they can't go on vacation but stops because Andrew is holding a knife on him 😭🥺😩 like I don't know that's just just a sweet little moment to me, Andrew threatening Kevin if he takes this little chance for happiness from Neil

Uhhhh literally Andrew “I-don’t-care” Minyard is the most romantic of ALL the foxes. My line of work revolves around intimacy and from all my training and studying let me tell you that man is a master at his craft.

Andrew’s touch is beautiful and sacred; this thing he does not take easily, or give out kindly whatsoever. Yet with Neil it’s as if he can’t stop himself. We see it in how gently he tapes the garbage bags around Neil’s injuries, wordlessly, without being asked. THAT’S intimacy. How he holds his neck to inspect his eyes when he removes his contacts, how he hands Neil cigarettes without a request, how he doesn’t say a word while touching Kevin with the point of a blade because Neil deserves a fucking break. Sure, by technicalities, the shower scene from TKM is intimate by definition, but really it’s in the kiss he ghosts across Neil’s hip, in how he pats dry his broken skin afterwards. How can you look at him wordlessly dropping keys into Neil’s palms, and think, yeah there’s no way Andrew could be romantic. Is he soft, is he gentle, as a person? No. But his minuscule actions are, his unmentioned gestures are. You just have to look and find them.

TKM just has some of the most subtly beautiful examples of a different flavour of love and intimacy that is so unusual and heartwarming it’s insane. That shower scene drives me crazy when I think about how caring Andrew is in it. He came in with the tape and bags on his own volition, knowing Neil needed a shower and couldn’t do it unattended. How he didn’t take away Neil’s autonomy by assuming he couldn’t undress himself, instead waiting until he paused and couldn’t go any further before he started to help. How he drapes the blanket over Neil’s shoulders, again giving Neil a chance to struggle before wrapping it around him. They practically don’t speak to each other really in that chapter at all apart from a bit of flirting in the shower. Because they don’t need to, because Andrew knows how to love, how to be caring, how to wrap up the boy he almost lost in bubble wrap because if he loses him again, it won’t be pretty. He washes Neil’s hair! He covers his wounds! He treats him gently when that is possibly the last word that could ever be used to describe Andrew. I feel like that scene was in part of course him just looking after Neil who can use approximately two square inches of his entire body, but in another part proving how serious he is about Neil. Everything changes between the two of them then, suddenly their actions more relaxed than hungry, not yet a given but instead now just a want.

I don’t know. I can’t help but see so much intimacy and romance in subtleties and things you’d barely even notice, regardless of the people/the characters and their circumstances. I wouldn’t use the word sweet to describe Andrew at all, but the things he does for Neil? The way that he loves Neil? The absolutely fucking sweetest.

Neil's actor being a huge Duolingo dork and in the behind the scenes while the other actors are fooling around between takes you can often see him with his head bent and hear the little 'ping!'s coming from his phone

also during late night shoots, as it gets closer to midnight he always has a point where he's like SHIT my Duolingo streak. and then just blocks out everyone while his fingers fly over his screen

(fans make compilations of him proudly showing his Duolingo streak to the camera and the number grows as the seasons progress)

(he definitely is the kinda bitch who cares more about maintaining the streak than actually learning languages)

actually omg while we're on the topic of languages

Kevin's actor tenderly reciting his French lines to Matt's actor and Matt's actor is just smitten. and he goes "say something else, love" and Kevin's actor strokes his cheek while saying another one of his lines and Matt swoons

(then Kevin's actor turns to the camera and goes "I just told him that he's a disappointment and is going to get his ass handed to him by ravens if he doesn't do exactly as I say" and, from the ground, Matt's actor goes "hell yeah you did. talk dirty to me any day of the week you sexy, sexy man")

coach's actor is always swearing to the point where they implement a swear jar...really it's just something for the kids to jokingly rag on him about, but he goes with it, and every so often they'll empty the jar to buy the cast and crew pizza

they're filming outside at night and it's cold and in between takes Matt's Aaron's and Renee's actors are all huddled together for warmth and Matt's actor gets pulled aside to get his makeup touched up and the other two just shriek at the absence of his heat and catch up to him to tuck themselves against him again

Andrew needs to snap his fingers in one scene but everyone finds out that day that his actor doesn't know how to snap so he has a little impromptu snapping lesson and of course it turns into everyone else trying to one-up each other with their snapping abilities

Nicky's actor telling everyone what he's going to steal from set (will literally say"[about Allison's bathrobe] damn that shit soft as hell. Ive been needing a new bathrobe actually. I'm stealing this" or "I'm stealing this lighter/bandana/sunglasses/etc") but because his humor is so dry everyone thinks he's joking. until months later. when the prop department can't find shit

Renee's actress is doing something completely mundane but Neil's and Allison's actors start narrating what she's doing like they're in a nature documentary (always with Australian accents for some reason??)

"and our specimen now reclines herself vertically on a piece of furniture us humans know as 'a desk.' this clearly less-developed creature seems not to understand the purpose of such an object. but given that this is her first time outside her natural habitat (the jungle) her lack of familiarity with modern technology is to be expected"

Renee's actress: *flips them off*

"ah and here we witness one of the most common behaviors of this specimen. specialists have dubbed it 'flipping the bird,' and explain it as a nonverbal expression of affection" "oh fuck off"

photo from another cold night-shoot and it's of Matt's and Dan's actors, she's standing in front of him zipped up in his hoodie, just her head poking out and they're having a conversation with other castmates like it's the most normal thing in the world, looking the very image of the couple they play

so much glorious content from shooting the dorm sleepover scene. the most popular thing to come from it is a picture from after they wrapped where the cast and some members of the crew had moved even closer to each other amid all the blankets and are asleep on top of each other

Andrew's actor will sometimes actually eat the ice cream he's given instead of just pretending to eat it, and halfway through the scene he casually mentions that he's lactose intolerant and sends the crew into a worried frenzy

if you haven't clocked it yet, these bitches are competitive. and one day, one thing led to another, and soon a bunch of the actors are all being filmed having a plank-holding competition. Dan's actress is the first to drop and she gets booed at for it because "you're an ex-stripper where tf is that upper body strength?"

she flips them off and goes to sit on Kevin's actor, hoping to squash his plank, but instead he starts doing push ups with her on his back. she grins

(Rikos actor wins that competition btw. and Neil's actor goes on a rant about "we succumbed to the ENEMY? a RAVEN? your characters would be ashamed of you" (he also lost?))

Allison's actress pretending to do a get-ready-with-me using all the stuff on Allison's vanity

Wymack's actor falling asleep in The Dad Pose™ when they're shooting a scene on the bus. and everybody gathers in to take pictures

when Kevin and Neil get all up in each other's faces their actors will pretend like they're going to kiss each other

not really a blooper but just all the actors for the foxes and the ravens mingling together in between takes and it looks so wrong

give me all the actors constantly taking the piss out of their characters

for ex during a scene where the monsters are in the car on the way to Edens, Nicky's actor looks towards the backseat where everyone is in character and goes wow what a fun crowd we are you'd never believe we're about to hit the club

night shoots are a. struggle. for Dan's actress. and the others love to take videos of her just standing on her mark with the most spaced out expression on her face

Andrew's and Neil's actors are shooting one of their typical intense, deep scenes and after one take, as soon as "cut" is called, Andrew's actor grabs Neil's face and starts serenading him with the song that's been stuck in his head all day

Renee's actress getting scolded for sneaking snacks into her costume

when Nicky's actor messes up a line (and he's the least likely of everyone to do it) he starts spewing Spanish

Andrew's actor constantly teasing his brother and Katelyn's actress whenever they have scenes together

like the two of them will just be talking together in between takes and Andrews actor will be behind the camera recording them and saying shit like "look at that MINYARD RIZZ" (or he'll use their actual last name) "hey btw [Katelyn's actor] I taught him everything he knows"

that scene where the foxes are rushing out of the dorm to check on their destroyed cars and Matt's actor just faceplants (Neil's actor: "wow. the dedication")

in one scene or other Allison's actress is drinking an iced drink and during one take she just keeps calmly shaking the ice around in her cup until one by one everyone cracks

in one scene Allison's actress is wearing sunglasses. and in between takes she lies down and on camera you can see Kevin and Matt's actors whispering trying to figure out whether or not she's sleeping because they can't see her eyes

Aaron's actor always using Neil's actor as a pillow during car scenes because they're always next to each other and they're actually hella tight irl

the kids love to steal any props that coach's actor needs to use (pens clipboards etc) before they start rolling just so they can watch him try to subtly fidget trying to find his prop before they get to the point in the scene where he actually needs it

all the actors just taking pictures together in the most brutal settings on set.

like Neil's makeup has his face all busted and everyone wants a selfie with him. they all have a photoshoot with the trashed cars. they have another one in front of the "happy 19th birthday junior" set. Neil is tied up at The Nest while they change his hair and Jean's and Riko's actors take selfies with him. another photoshoot with Neil handcuffed in the police car. all these settings in terrible scenes and the actors are in front of them with grins and peace signs

they're terrible.

I feel like it’s not talked about enough that early in the books Kevin is the only person we see Andrew initiating any type of physical closeness/touch with at all … also thinking about how they’re described physically with each other in Son of Nefes like. so much tenderness (@ your tags about how Andrew carries himself around Kevin and Neil)

I definitely think their closeness in the beginning gets overshadowed a lot by how close Andrew and Neil get later in the series. And that's not a diss on andreil! I think it's important to Andrew's character to see that while Neil played a very large part in letting Andrew explore his boundaries and grow comfortable with physical affections, there were others that helped in that healing along the way too.

One of my favourite scenes is the one where Kevin takes his glove off for Andrew to inspect his hand for any damages. It's written in such a way that implies they weren't paying any attention to the rest of the world around them. Matt had been carded, the play was over and a fight had broken out, and during that sliver of time, either Andrew had hailed Kevin over or he'd gone of his own volition to the goal for Andrew to give his injuries a one over. Kevin knew he was going to get swapped out, and they both turned somewhat surprised when Dan called out to Kevin, as if the game being in play was an afterthought. (Which, considering it's Kevin, seems somewhat ooc since he always knows what's going on on court).

And, although we don't have the exact words regarding Andrew's deal with Kevin, it was implied in the most basic terms that Andrew would protect Kevin from Riko. (There's obviously nuance here given Andrew's bodyguard tendencies when Kevin gets into later spats with people, but for the sake of how vague most of Andrew's deals are spoken aloud, I think it's safe to assume he promised to protect Kevin from his big bad not sibling in the same way he promised to have Neil's back). All that just to say... It wasn't really in their deal for Andrew to protect or look after Kevin outside of his affiliations with the Ravens. And yet, even after threatening to break his own hand before all this, because Kevin annoyed the piss out of him so much, here he was, inspecting Kevin's hand and putting the game on hold to do so.

This injury has nothing to do with Riko or the Ravens. So, in terms of their deal, he didn't really need to dote on Kevin like that. And yet.

And yet.

And this is really only one instance of them being glued at the hip. Andrew does a lot of redirecting of Kevin's person in the same way we see him do later with Neil. Like you said as well, Kevin's the only one for some pages that we see Andrew physical with that isn't necessarily reactionary or defensive. I know Andrew was still on his meds at the time, but this line came across to me as him literally shoving Andrew down court who didn't seem to take much issue with the it:

He doesn't make much mention of it, but if I had to wager a guess, these moments of familiar contact are not a new thing upon Neil's arrival.

(Also it's been a hot minute since I skimmed through son nefes (the ec and I are on cherry picking terms most days) but I know Renee saw it too.)

Like it makes me insane to think about how their deal didn't have to incorporate all that closeness. It didn't require Andrew to become intertwined with the rest of Kevin's life and daily going on's. He could have agreed to keep him on a leash from getting dragged out of the fox den by the Ravens and called it a day, but we can see clear as day that Andrew treats his relationship with Kevin far more delicately than that. In terms of canon, the best friend (platonic soul bond or whatever title floats your fancy) behaviour jumped out of Andrew so fast, I'm shocked how anyone could overlook it.

And I haven't even touched on how Wymack views their relationship, or Kathy's show, or the role Andrew plays as Kevin's other half post Evermore, or the first genuine smiles are the ones they give each other, or the pseudo threat of the butter knife scene, or whatever they had going on here:

Like, there are certainly motions that can be considered varying levels of tender, but I do think it's important to remember that Andrew's gestures should not be measured with the same scale as say someone like Renee. We can obviously see in later chapters that Andrew can be incredibly gentle (ie the hip kiss that ruined my life), but I think it's a disservice to Andrew's character to understate how close he and Kevin are through the series, both physically and emotionally.

After their first year in Palmetto, Andrew and Neil started exploring their relationship since they could both admit that they had one in the first place. Boundaries were not crossed, but they pushed gently on them daily, trying to make their something work. That night was one of those days. They had decided to share a bed for the whole night to see how it goes. Neil was really excited about being allowed to be beside Andrew at his most vulnerable, when he's asleep.

"Stop that" Andrew said, not opening his eyes to look at Neil.

"What?" Neil asked like he didn't already know what Andrew is referring to.

"Staring. Stop it." Andrew said in his monotone voice but Neil had a feeling he is not really annoyed so he pushed.

"Why?"

"I'm trying to sleep." Neil was amazed by the minute pout on Andrew's lips. Anyone else probably wouldn't be able to see it there, but Neil had spent hours studying Andrew's face to miss it.

"I'm not keeping you awake" Neil says in the tone of voice that Allison calls his 'innocent baby voice'.

"Yes you are. Stop staring."

"How can I do that?"

"Close your eyes, Josten" Andrew answered exasperated. Neil can't help but humour Andrew by doing what he's told.

"I did"

"No, you didn't. I can still feel you staring at me"

"But I did close them!" Neil tried to defend himself.

"Then it's not working." Andrew's brows furrowed. He opened one eye to see Neil on his side turned towards him with his eyes closed.

"Maybe it's my thoughts." Neil says after a while. "I can't get you off my thoughts."

Andrew could see his idiot's smile at the end of the sentence. He hated that it made him feel… that it made him feel.

"Shut up. Stop being sappy." Andrew turned to his side, mirroring Neil's stance. He opened his eyes fully to look at his boyfriend. Andrew was still in awe that he got to have him.

Neil gasped and opened his eyes as well.

"How dare you accuse me of being sweet. Take that back now!"

"Never." Andrew replied with a smirk. He rarely let himself break his emotionless mask, but this was Neil. Neil was safe.

"Well then I guess I'll keep staring till dawn and you and I both know that I can do that" Andrew knew his junkie definitely could and he found himself only half irritated about that prospect.

"If I cannot get rid of you, kiss me. Yes or no?"

"Yes, now we're talking." Neil leaned in.

"We aren't talking. We're kissing." Andrew said, a breath away from Neil's mouth before connecting their lips.

Kevin Day’s unfortunate run in with a Kiss Cam

The use of a ‘kiss cam’ had become a recent trend in the world of Exy. Ever since Penn state started doing one during half time and a video of it had gone viral, other teams had copied the idea.

Kevin hadn’t thought much of it. He really hadn’t. That was until the Jackals vs Tornadoes game.

He went with Neil, they tried to go together whenever they had the opportunity. Because really there were very few people Kevin would want to go see an Exy game with. Certainly not with someone who didn’t have a comparable technical understanding of the game.

So Neil it was.

Everyone in the Exy world knew who Kevin Day was, but especially now that he’d gone pro. Eyes had been on Neil ever since the interview with Kathy.

This led both of them to be recognized more than the average player. And while in everyday life they may only get the occasional excited fan asking for an autograph or picture, when it came to Exy specific events, showing up was basically like asking to be mobbed.

So they wore disguises. 

Neil with his hair pushed back, hidden by a sweatband and hat.

For Kevin, a baseball cap and sunglasses large enough to hide his tattoo.

And even though the disguises might have worked in a crowd of tens of thousands, it most definitely did not on a giant, blown up screen.

Kevin hadn’t even realized what was going on until Neil nudged his shoulder, pulling his attention away from his phone. He had looked at Neil in confusion, then glanced around them only to see people staring back and smiling at him. Then he looked up to meet his own eyes on the big screen.

People had obviously recognize them and the crowd began chanting “kiss” “kiss” “kiss”.

Kevin didn’t plan on doing anything about it.

The camera would get bored and move on to some other unfortunate people.

And it did. He thought he even heard some people sigh in disappointment. Kevin sighed in relief.

Except it came back. Multiple times. And then locked in on them, not budging.

Kevin wondered who he would have to talk to to get whatever cameraman or announcer or whoever ran this stupid ‘kiss cam’ fired.

The volume of the crowd kept rising.

And he realized at that point it was weirder not to do anything.

So Kevin turned, planning to give Neil the quickest and least homosexual possible kiss on the cheek.

But what he did not anticipate was Neil turning to look at him at the same time—probably in reaction to Kevin’s sudden movement—which in some horrible twist of events put his mouth right where his cheek used to be.

Kevin did not get the chance to flash his ‘just bros being bros’ grin, because his mouth was awkwardly pressed against the side of Neil’s, before they both immediately lurched away.

The crowd went insane. 

By the time he had recovered from surprise and thought to play it off as a joke, the camera that had been persistently focused on them was shut off. The second half was starting.

The first thing Kevin realized was that multiple people definitely got that on video and out of those people at least one of them would post it to social media.

His second realization was, Oh god Andrew’s going to kill me.

His crew gave him enough grief earlier. And Andrew would bet they'll still be on it when he gets back to work. The thought of going back in there now is... Well, not unbearable. But he's definitely not excited. At least Renee isn't the most annoying person alive.

Andrew looks at the basket’s contents. There’s enough sweets to last him a month. Well, a week at least. If he paces himself. Which he won’t. Why should he limit his chocolate intake when he could die in a fiery explosion at any time? Especially with this maniac he's talking to.

Thoughts on aftg/star trek?

oh god. so many!

vulcan andrew. he fits the mold pretty well, except for the violence. I could see him similar to spock in that case, a half vulcan, which would add to the way hes kind of seen as an unpredictable character by the upperclassmen -- working with the idea that people who are both terran and vulcan dont fit perfectly into easy behavior stereotypes. im thinking a lot about the pocket book "mindshadow" where spock's "inconsistencies" get expored. in an aftg to tos recast, id put him as spock.

that brings me to neil, who i think in said recast is a really solid kirk. There's this one tumblr post by @/na-nanu talking about kirk's alienation, and one line that has stuck with me ever since i read it: "Kirk, while personable, is a fairly Vulcan human." this strikes me as so so neil. until they really get to know him better, the upperclassmen tend to read neil in opposition to andrew. neil, to those outside, is the more personable of the two, the one who feels. as we all know, neil and andrew are incredibly similar -- which is why i referenced that quote just now. like kirk, neil takes andrew as he is, and never asks for more than he can give.

more kirk qualities: neil is ride or die (literally) for his team, self-sacrificing and quick-witted. he's not afraid to lie or trick his way into getting what he wants. lets be honest, both of these men love a good ruse.

going back to andrew for a moment, the way andrew is talked about as unfeeling and monstrous rings a very similar bell to the way terrans talk about vulcans and their lack of emotional display. kirk can read spock better than anyone, sound familiar?

this gets its own bullet point because i dont know where to put it. not all of my thoughts on aftg/st are so matchy-matchy (like, trying to make things line up), but i think the episode "The Enemy Within" and Neil-Nathaniel-Only-One-Of-Them-Can-Survive-Both-Of-Them-Want-To-Live have got some interesting similarities. Nathaniel dying in that basement too, and such.

I feel like people might want to cast Kevin as McCoy, because of McSpirk, and how they're the main trio. but because of Spock and Bones' frequent disagreements, similarities, and general vibes i really see him as Aaron, who's more explosive then Kevin when it comes to Andrews apathy. Bones and his wife and kid back home are also kind of Katelyn-esque.

renee and uhura... i think that this parallel works if spock/andrew, vulcan andrew what have you, is at the core of this thing. theres a lot of similarities for everyone, but god. he's the reason i'm even thinking about tos and aftg together. the "unlikely" friendship, everyone thinking they have a thing, bonding over a shared activity (but its music instead of beating the shit out of each other)

i can really imagine andrew getting into star trek. its a really good "what if?" show that i think he'd enjoy, given his feelings on the zombie apocalypse. renee could definitely get into the morality aspect as well. i can see them talking about the questions in the epsodes, like "so what would you do if your evil clone tried to take over the ship?" and the like. Andrew seeing himself in Spock, seeing someone who also can only deal with his emotions on the lowest volume, and him being loved nonetheless. Maybe seeing a little bit of his not-boyfriend-nothing Neil in Kirk.

another thing about spock/andrew. they are both surprisingly open! I'd have to go back and look to find the exact post, but someone made a great post about how kirk is actually not that forthcoming about his past/life, while spock, if you literally just ask him, will tell you a lot! this i think is hilariously similar to neil being seen as the more open one, when he is actually so cagey and full of false pasts, while andrew will answer most questions. people just never seem to ask (until neil, ofc).

There's definitely more where this came from, so ill add on to this later, but im battling a bit of a headache right now and need to end it here. Thank you so so much for the ask, im excited to hear what you think!!!!!!!!

He's definitely still figuring it out bc you know, romantic feelings weren't allowed in the Nest so he's figuring it out

Dan: bi sexual but, to her huge dismay, with a preference for men (super satly when she realized this but you know she got Matt out of it so it was okay)

Matt: he's also bi, I mean just look at him. If he wasn't so in love with Dan and was able to, he would probably kiss Neil. He and Dan definitely talk about the cute people they see and point out cute people because they're comfortable in their relationship to do so, no jealousy here

Allison: a bi sexual queen! She doesn't realize it until after Seth passed however. She definitely made out with girls while drunk and just thought it was normal (sure, keep telling yourself that boo)

I am loving your recent flood of AFTG posts, I have never been the same since I read that series and Captive Prince a few years back

Anyways I saw the one compiled with quotes about rage and Andrew and I almost cried

I really really love Nora for being like, fck it and she just wrote the characters she wanted and the story she wanted and nothing comes close to that experience

I really appreciate how Andrew fully is an unhinged and violent person and there’s no ‘redemption arc or forgiveness’ nonsense that most writers (I’m looking at the recent YA sickness and booktok monstrosities) —- would intent to write in or be forced to do so by their editors or whatnot.

He is unapologetically himself and even though in reality I would probably avoid someone like that (I am smol. I have all the rage of the world but I would snap like a twig in 2 seconds if he decided to just end me—-ala Allison and Aaron situation WHICH I HAVE SOME BEEF WITH IF YOU’LL HEAR ME OUT) —-I just appreciate his character so much I can’t explain

Neil is myyyy boyyy though I definitely experienced the series the way he also develops across the books. When he’s shookt I’m shookt, when he’s snarky I’m also feeling snarky, and when he’s driving into a conversation like knives I’m also with him (the scene after the assault in book 2, at the hospital where Neil confronts him about ‘doing nothing’ still sends chills down my spine)

I just love AFTG it’s tattooed into my brain

ahhhhh you have noooo idea how much joy this ask brought me. even after all these years i still get excited when people come talk to me about these books and the characters in it. i am all with you in the opinion that this series is made special by nora just writing what she wanted to write. it’s so unapologetic in that approach as well, which is why the story and the characters and the dynamics work for me. and omg don’t even get me started on andrew or neil, they are my sons. i have soooo many feelings about them it’s awful. i actually appreciate how messed up they both are and how they both don’t really lose that by the end of the story. they do get better in their own ways without fundamentally changing as people and that just feels so right for them (to me at least). for me, this story has always been about the after of trauma. it’s about the coping mechanism to deal with it and the adjustment you have to make to survive it and also that even when you’re never gonna be what society considers “normal” again you can have a life that’s worth living and full of love and accomplishments and success. a life that lets you be okay most of the time. in my opinion, none of the characters needed a redemption anyway. ((but you’re right, popular sensibilities often push editors to demand that from their writers. which is so stupid to me but another discussion entirely lol.)) like, with these characters, it’s all about perspective. you simply cannot meet them on a level that insists on “healthy” notions of ethics and morals because they operate on such other principles. principles that make sense for the characters based on their psychology and circumstances. and that’s where you have to meet them and the point from where you have to judge them, in my opinion. ((that’s also why i think aftg is not for most people because i get not wanting to stray from one’s own set of sensibilities when it comes to the stuff in this series.)) personally, these characters (and especially andrew and neil) are so interesting exactly because their brains are so different from mine. i find that fascinating. and nora characterises them well enough to give it all a coherent internal logic that works out for the story. so YES OMG i appreciate these characters so much as well. they’re truly so different in a way that i eat up. and PLS full-on shit-stirrer, people-dragging, truth-spitting neil is my FAVOURITE!!! love it when he lets lose and verbally attacks people like there is no tomorrow. makes me so proud in the weirdest way.

I woke up to like 3 asks omg I was very, very happy

First of all, Andrew is a fun example or "looks like he could kill you, would rather eat ice cream, but definitely could if provoked" and I think it's very fun

even when he isn't at palmetto, like when he's living in different cities and traveling a lot for his pro games, he still calls Bee twice a week

sometimes with Aaron if they're having issues, which by then are rarer but still happen, cus siblings

the only other people he bothered to keep in touch with are Kevin and Renee

She bullied him into getting a tattoo of his own, its a dagger with thorny roses around it, all monochrome, on his forearm, he gets it after his senior year, its wonderful, Kevin told him it was great and Andrew almost smiled at him

on the topic of smiling, he doesn't often, but when he does, he has a crooked smile, and its mostly teeth, and Neil loves it

The twins and Nicky because YES (I'm pulling these outta my ass rn, but know that I adore this)

First and foremost, both of them pretended not to know Nicky at any point in time ever. Mainly because they're both edgelords and here is their nice and flamboyant cousin, and they didn't want it to damper the vibes (y'know, of hostility and trauma)

In all honesty, it was mostly Aaron. I keep to my idea that he was actually pretty well-liked in high school before he met Andrew. he was always pretty quiet, but he was smart, and he didn't put up with anyone's bullshit, he'd get into arguments often, but if you weren't a dick then neither was he.

He stopped talking almost entirely after his mom died, both because of all the complicated feelings that brought, and because Andrew said he couldn't have friends anymore

Andrew showed up and immediately scared the shit out of everyone, so really, Aaron would've probably lost most of his friends regardless of this

Nicky can't cook, and these boys lived off of takeout or whatever Aaron made out of their scarce groceries

also, Aaron is the only one who CAN cook

kevin gets/makes andrew food totally randomly all the time. he knows andrew's orders at every restaurant on campus. when andrew is in a bad mood, kevin will go, "if i go get you starbucks right now, will you stop being such a bitch?" andrew goes, "you're not my fucking boyfriend" (even if he is), but just acts grumpy until kevin brings him starbucks. (kevin definitely does NOT find it endearing.)

kevin just likes to give andrew things--he feels indebted to andrew, and like andrew has given him something he can't replicate. so he does these little acts of service for him without being asked, and andrew glares at him warily every time, but he loves it. nobody aside from kevin and neil have ever made him feel served.

andrew loves to dress his boys up, but especially kevin--because, unlike neil, kevin loves to be dressed up. he feels like andrew's lil american girl doll and he loves it. when he goes to a function without andrew, he still asks andrew to pick out his outfit and do his hair for him. he knows andrew eats it up.

andrew loves watching neil and kevin bicker or roughhouse or get really competitive with each other. it gives him ridiculous butterflies. it's just not fair that he has to look after not one, but two hot boys, all the time. not fair.

they do love to watch movies together, but i think that andrew would love documentaries--maybe not, like, ken burns, but. they would def watch documentaries and they both yell at anyne who talks during movies, but when it's just them (or maybe +neil whos not paying attention/asleep), they discuss the movie throughout. they also cuddle. ill fight about this.

my absolute FAVORITE hc about these two is that they are each other's infodump buddies. they infodump to each other and listen to each other, even if they don't give a single fuck about what the other is talking about. they actively listen and engage in conversation about it. (if you are neurodivergent and don't have many people in your life to infodump to, you know how important this person can be!!!)

So to clear everything up:

Neil is in cahoots with the FBI. He helps them with the whole "think like a criminal" shit, in regards, they sorta shorten his sentence from time to time.

Neil is ALSO is cahoots with Ichiro. He's like "the eye on the inside" or something. The information exchanged using some doctors/nurses who work for the moriyamas. Ichiro gives him shit like clothes and such since paying with money is useless. He also allows Nathaniel to live so yeah

Ichiro calls Nathaniel "Niel" or "El" from so he can tell him appart from Nathan.

So yeah Neil is doing sorta fine yk

As fine as someone in his situation can do

Then he gets told that he needs to help understand the mind of this criminal. He's like "Eyo tell me all the gossip then"

And the fucking criminals are both him and his father.

He's says "weird but ok"

Then they bring in STUDENTS

"How am I supposed to work with kids, specially when talking about myself"

"Most of them are older than you, Nathaniel. It's part of the deal"

"I thought I was out of the fucking deal"

He ends up giving in after a quick call with ichiro and getting his authorization to talk as much as he wants as long as it doesn't involves the moriyamas because I never really liked your father anyway, talk shit about him if you want to

Then the interviews begin

They're absolute hell, until this blonde short angry boy gets in. He look at Nathaniel like he couldn't care less about this, and there's something that makes that fact so interesting for someone who's had to sugar coat his identity and past to everyone he knows so he can avoid ending up completely alone

"I'm Andrew, Andrew Joseph Minyard" and he's got a pretty, and tired voice.

"I bet you know my name, right?" Nathaniel answers back, because, well, that's pretty obvious, isn't it?

"Nathaniel Wesninski. Yeah, I'm pretty sure I know it by now" the blond sighs, and ruffles his hair.

He looks tired and damned, and Nathaniel wonders to himself if maybe this boy should get admitted in. He looks... not okay. He looks like that one girl that came in last week with the bandages in her neck and fear in her lungs. Andrew wears arm bands, and there's something something in Nathaniel's mind that reminds him that outside of this cold hospital, out there in the real world, is summer time.

How rare and suiting, all at the same time.

"Look, Nathaniel" Andrew doesn't sound hesitant, or scared, or petulant. He sounds like he's about to fall asleep when his voice interrupts the silence "I think you're pretty smart, right? I've read about you, of course. To survive on those conditions... you have to be very clever"

Survive. What a curious word.

Everyone else talks like Neil lived like a king, even when he bears scars that definitely don't look like the ones a monarch would have. Even when he tells everyone how much of a bitch Nathan was to him. Even when he screams and cries sometimes, because in one second he's on his bed and in the other one he's there with Lola and Nathan and knifes and please dad stop- I'll behave, stop and then-

And then Andrew keeps talking.

"So I'll explain this and you choose whatever the fuck you want"

There's a moment of silence, a moment for the pacient to calm. A moment for him to get his head back in earth.

"I'm interested in your story because it's, honestly, the easiest one to get, seeing how you're, you know, alive and such" Andrew gestures with his hand, signaling Nathaniel as a whole "That's why only a few of us have tried to interview you. There's a bunch of rules and bla, bla, bla to get to you. So what I can offer you is pretty much the same they can, with the difference of a promise"

Nathaniel tilts his head, interested. That sounds good and wrong at the same time, because he's been next to Andrew less than half an hour and he can already tell in so many ways how he is very different to the people that came to visit him before. But the promise parts sounds... promising. Hah.

"I have this horribly annoying doormate, he's got some money laying there, so I can get you outside stuff and you give me information. His name is like, Kevin day, and he used to be a star at exy and-"

And the world freezes when Nathaniel hears about that.

So he decides (he doesn't even think about it) to work with Andrew Minyard, because God fucking damnit he looks like an interesting person

Kevin Day’s gay awakening

Little bit of gay awakening angst. I personally head canon Kevin as pan, but that is just my personal thought so think of him however you want. Not really any triggers, but I did write Nicky differently because I don't like how Nora wrote him and I want him to be a good friend and person.

   He lay in his bed wide awake, despite it being close to one in the morning. He could feel his heart pounding in his chest, and the breathing of the boys around him. Dorms had been reconfigured a bit at the start of the year. Aaron, Nicky and Matt shared a room now and Andrew, Neil, and Kevin had the other. Andrew and Neil were curled around each other on the bigger bed across the room. Kevin laid alone in his loft bed. He had pushed his book shelf against his bed at the beginning of the school year, to box himself in more. Kevin enjoyed smaller spaces; they made him feel safe. He heard one of the boys, probably Andrew, move in his sleep. Kevin wished sometimes that someone could lay in his bed. He wished he could lay against someone and feel the warmth of their body against his, their breathing underneath him, hear their heartbeat as he lay his head on their chest, warm arms wrapped around him, holding him close. Kevin felt like his mind was eating him alive. The foxes had held a banquet that day, and Kevin had found himself spending most of it talking with Jeremy. The Ravens had attended and at first sight began to ridicule Kevin. He let it happen until Jeremy grabbed him away and dragged him to a table in the corner. They had made conversation with him the entire night. Kevin hadn’t felt so cared for in a while. He didn’t feel like he did though when Nicky hugged him goodnight, or when the upper class man finally invited him somewhere, or when Wymack invited him over for dinner and they talked about Exy and cars and Kayleigh Day. This care made Kevin’s stomach hurt and his head spin. He had never felt so comfortable about casual and genuine small talk. Jeremy made that easy and throughout their conversation Kevin had begun to realize more about Jeremy. The way his eyes lit up when he talked about his interests, his hair and how soft and fluffy it was, his deep blue eyes, the way he smiled and the freckles that danced across his face, the blush on his cheeks when Jean joined them. Kevin felt sick to his stomach when they bid each other goodbye.

   Now hours later Kevin found himself staring at the ceiling. His mind spun and he found himself questioning things about himself he had never questioned before. Kevin knew he found women attractive, but he also knew that he had found Jeremy attractive. Kevin crawled out of his bed as quietly as possible. He creeped into the living room and threw himself down onto the couch. Kevin couldn't risk Andrew waking up and seeing this. He pulled out his phone and searched up the word gay to start. Kevin immediately knew it wasn’t him. He liked women. He typed again. ‘I like women and men’. The search results he got seemed more relatable, but not quite right. Kevin found himself scrolling through articles and blogs, looking at flags and definitions. He finally found himself pausing upon a yellow, pink and blue flag. “Pansexual” he read. Kevin thought. He liked this. He realized he had never really cared about the gender of who he liked, and more or less just liked the person, but had only dated Thea who just happened to be a woman. Kevin found himself scrolling farther in the website and coming across a page labeled “Pronouns and how they work” He clipped on it hesitantly. Kevin read further and further, his brow creased with tension. He read about neo pronouns and gender neutral terms. How  the nonbinary umbrella worked and the labels under it. Kevin felt his eyes well up with tears. He had never known so much about himself so fast before. It was like a great tsunami wave hitting him at once.

   Footsteps broke the silence.

   “Kevin what the hell are you doing awake?”

Kevin dropped his found onto the carpeted floor in shock, hoping he had turned it off. Nicky stood in front of him wearing one of Erik’s sweatshirts he had stolen last time he visited Germany.

   “Nothing, why are you awake?” He responded.

He hoped Nicky couldn’t see the tears on his cheeks or hear the way his voice shook.

   “I thought I heard crying, wanted to make sure you were okay… Are you okay?”

   Kevin nodded quickly, hoping Nicky would just leave. To his dismay Nicky plopped down onto the couch next to him, touching shoulders.

   “What’s wrong?” He asked the green eyed boy.

Kevin let out a big sigh. He didn’t quite understand himself yet and Nicky was probably his best option for help.

   “How… how did you know you were gay?” He asked quietly.

Nicky’s brow furrowed. He was shocked by the question but answered.

   “I guess it’s just always been boys. Growing up, all my friends found girlfriends and had crushes on girls but I never did. I just didn’t like girls and then I kissed a boy and realized I was gay.” He responded, quickly following it up.

   “Do you think you’re gay?”

Kevin shook his head.

   “I definitely like women.”

   “But you like men too?”

Kevin sighed and nodded, looking down at his lap. He felt Nicky wrap an arm around his shoulder and rub his arm.

   “Do you think you’re bisexual?”

Kevin shook his head.

   “I think pansexual. I know bi and pan are similar but pansexual just feels more comfortably, I don’t know.” He finished quietly.

Nicky dropped his head onto Kevin’s shoulder.

   “Anything else, you can tell me anything?” He whispered back.

Kevin hesitated, but if anyone on the team would know about this it would probably be Nicky.

   “Do you know how he/they pronouns work?” He asked, feeling another teardrop fall down his cheek.

   “Yeah, Erik’s friend Michael uses them, so does Jeremy Knox. They’re all out by the way. I'm not like outing them or anything.” He clarified the last bit.

Kevin wiped his cheek.

   “I wanna try he/they pronouns.  I don’t know if I like them, but i just wanna try them out.” He admitted.

   Nicky pulled him closer.

   “Of course, do you want me to not use them around the team?”

Kevin nodded. He didn’t feel ready for anyone to know about him yet.

   “Yes. Can we just keep it a secret for now?” He asked.

Nicky nodded and said “take all the time you need.”

Kevin found himself doing something out of his comfort zone and reached over, grasping Nicky’s hand in his own scarred one. Nicky key responded by pulling into a tight hug. Kevin buried his head into Nicky's shoulder and felt his friend's warm hand rub between his shoulder blades, easing some of his stress.

   “Thank you” he whispered, muffled by Nicky’s sweater.

   “Of course. I’m very proud of you.” His friends responded.

Kevin and Nicky released each other from their hug and talked a little longer. Kevin found himself walking back to his room a bit later, and climbing into bed. He still longed to share it with someone else, but for now he felt a little more comfortable with the idea of who he would share it with. Kevin drifted off to sleep, his mind at ease over all the confusion he had experienced. Sure, he was still a little lost, but he felt like he had found a map to help him get the rest of the way out.

 I know a lot of people have different opinions on the bi and pan label. This is a personal head canon and I am venting through Kevin right now. I am a pan person, and the way Kevin describes just being more comfy with pan labels is how I feel personally although everyone’s experience is different.

the foxes + peircings.

neil: he doesnt really care for peircings in general because why should he add more holes to his skin? but he hears somone make a comment about andrews ear piercings and how there "not manly" and so he immediately sets up an appointment to get two for himself. he also gets a tongue peircing because he saw it on one of the posters in the shop and when he gets back to the dorms andrew just kinda looks at him and neil sticks his tongue out and it's probably the first time neil has ever actually seen andrew look slightly surprised. he gets a middle bottom lip peircing and a septum during his 3rd year because he saw matt get a lip piercing and wanted to match

andrew: got a bunch of ear peircings threwout his teen years and while he was with cass he got an eyebrow piercing and two lip piercings he keeps as balls insted of hoops because they get annoying. all of his peircings are black steel insted of silver. neil loves them.

kevin: probably got nipple peircings in the nest and when he got out and started dressing in the locker room nicky asked about it and kevin refuses to talk about it because he got them on a dare and he was extremely drunk so he didnt even relized he had them until two days later.

aaron: was most definitely an emo fuck in middle school and got an eyebrow peircing and a bunch of ear piercings. he also has a septum. he has one lip peircing that he keeps a hoop in because it's probably a defining thing between him and andrew.

nicky: standard ear piercings he got when he left luther as a sort of fuck you to him and he keeps small silver hoops he got as a gift from erik.

matt: eyebrow piercing his brother bullyed him into getting and a center bottom lip piercing because dan said it would look cool on him and he got it at the same time neil did so they could match

dan: nose hoop and two layers of ear piercings just because mat compliments her when she wears earings that match her outfits, she currently wears gold studs/hoops in her ears

allison: ears are f i l l e d with peircings, even more than aarons and andrews and she loves switching them out and buying random earings just because she can. her favorite one is a cuff neil bought her for christmas one year and its silver and has a tiny orange gemstone in it

renee: use to have her ears streched but doest use gauges anymore and insted has a hanging tiny cross in one of her ears and a lesbain flag in the other

wymack: like three hoops in one ear and two in the other he got because somone told him not too.
