been binging a show that is bad (both dated and handles some episode topics poorly) good (characters are fun) confusing (shoehorned religious [read christian] element that doesn't mesh with the scifi plotline [or like isn't done well enough to work]) but am enthralled enough to have made it to the final season (so many different plot points crammed in out of nowhere because they were trying to get another season approved) and it's bad in the way i can't reccomend it to anyone i know but has a good enough premise that i want to rip things to shreds over what it could've been if it were better
#i only started watching it cause it was on the front page of the website#which i think is cause there's a reboot/sequel that literally just came out.#but AAGUHHHH i am so mad about little things in the autism way.#i keep having to do my jogging stim. esp over the second to last and last season.#''oh character a won't remember this at all. so sad. oh well it's for the better''#AND CHARACTER B IS THE ONE WHO SAYS NO!!!!! only a few episodes later!!!!!!#and. like the confusing characterization of one guy. he's a good character and like says he's been to protests and stuff for good causes#but like make him homophobic. like i kno i'm not putting detail here but. it's not congruent with what his character should be.#yea yea it's a show from late 80's early 90's. but still!!!#one episode that has a plotline involving a gay guy in the military. the character starts the episode not wanting gay ppl in military.#main char is like. not cool with that. and end of ep guy says he was wrong. ok character development? i guess? but only for that ep??#BUT IN LIKE ONE EPISODE B4 THAT THERE WAS A LESBIAN THAT NOTHING WAS SAID ABOUT. NOT EVEN A ONE LINER.#(which is relevant bc he says a lot of one liners.) but that ep was from s1#and s1 is fairly different from the rest of the seasons#also they go back on him having character development in that one ep anyway later because he makes an ew noise when some ladies are#gossiping abt a guy who left his wife for a dude.#GUH I'M FRUSTRATED but mostly i'm stalling going to sleep rn bc i have something i need to wake up for tomorrow.#please please please talk to me about this (if u know what it is. or can deal with the problems and want to see it. ur life.)#also i'm tired. biggggg issues in my life am i rite? (i am blowing this out of proportion. or not. i only exist right here right now)#key's lockbox#pomegranate rant#tag got erased bc of using a quote mark oopse#char a remembered event and asked char b if he remembered it

Hello all Happy Tuesday. We venture towards the end of S1. Thank you all for the love been getting makes my whole day/week. This episode is a gif desert legit one I can use haha So it'll be all screen-caps with my phone except one gif and this desert one haha My assumption is this will change as we get into later seasons. This one was lacking for sure in the gif dept.
Tumblr media
1x17- The Shake Up.
This episode has Chenford separate which explains the lack of gifs tbh lol It's still a really good Lucy wise. We get a look into her family dynamic by meeting her father. We also get to see Nolan get the Tim treatment LOL Off we go.
Tumblr media
Cold open gets me right in the feels. Nolan spotting Capt. Anderson’s grave during an arrest in the cemetery. Talia gives him a moment to pay his respects. A really nice scene. God she was so young. Love the nod to her after last ep. She deserved it.
Tumblr media
A opportunity comes up during roll call to watch a protected witness. Nolan jumps on the chance. Talia instantly shuts it down. Says it's like watching paint dry. Grey tells him he's out of luck. Then Tim jumps in. Surprises the hell out of everyone. Says he'll go with Nolan to protect this witness. Heh you know Tim’s doing this to get a rise out of Nolan. Test him see what he’s made of. He’s ridden with the other two rookies and not him. John seems nervous af LOL it makes me laugh so hard how uneasy he looks.
Tumblr media
Tim’s face LMAO I can not. Disgruntled with him from the get go. I’m fairly certain he doesn’t think much of Nolan. It has nothing to do with his age. It has to do with his personality I believe. Its the rambling he can't stand the most. I think he wanted to test drive Nolan see how he would do cause well Tim be Tim. He is going over the acronym and procedure with him as they’re leaving. Instantly thrown in deep in with Tim. Nolan goes on a rant and Tim just cuts him off by getting in the car LOL
Tumblr media
They arrive on scene and meet with the DA. Tim is slightly offended when Delmonte thinks Nolan is in charge haha Let’s him know right away he is a rookie. Also cutting off Nolan’s convo with the DA about Jessica. It’s funny Tim is such a hard ass with everyone except Lucy. Now that is much more true towards the later seasons but still holds true in S1. He's softer with her than he was beginning of the season, but you can see the contrast between Lucy and anyone else easily. Watching Tim with John total night and day difference in his demeanor.
Tumblr media
Also needs to be noted how vastly different these two are. This shot alone shows they're complete opposites. Their outfits show this more than any words ever could. John is dad clothes all day and Tim is a sight to see let’s just say that. Heh.
Tumblr media
Something that is a plus about this ep is Talia/Lucy riding together again. I do love seeing them being paired up. This is a much better result/dynamic this time around. More of a mutual respect there. No Nolan garbage looming over them. On their first call they rescue a teenager from his mother. His girlfriend called it in concerned and rightfully so.
His mother had been torturing and dehydrating him in order keep him from his girlfriend. Doing some religious ritual or exorcism of sorts. Pretty damn awful to watch. Lucy asks if he’ll be ok. Talia says physically yes but mentally not for a long time. Good setup for the rest of the ep Lucy. Bit of foreshadowing with her father being brought into the picture.
Tumblr media
As they're walking away she gets a call. Lucy asks if its ok to take it and Talia seems more than fine with. Its about her father. Talia overhears Lucy was going to wait to end of her shift to see him. She lets Lucy go right then and there. Talia is pretty great about it. She is the entire time for Lucy. Tells her it’s family when Lucy asks if it’s really ok they go and see him. Much more redeeming pair up this time around.
Tumblr media
We get a first look into Lucy’s dynamic with her parents and it’s not a pretty one…Her father is a therapist and was attacked by one of his patients. Lucy naturally wants the guys name so she can go arrest him. Her first instinct is justice for him. He fights her on it says was just a dissociative episode. That his patient didn't mean to hurt him. Lucy battles back and says thats irrelevant, the law is clear and she should arrest him.
He doesn't respond well to this....Tells Lucy that the law is broken. That she is working for a broken system. Very combative with her from the jump. Lucy tries to use some reason. Tells him this isn’t the solution though. To pretend he didn’t break his arm. He goes on to say this is better this than arresting his patient for it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then after he's insulted her profession does a one-two punch to her gut with his words. He knows this is going to hurt her and it bugs me to no end. The guilt trip being laid down here. I have parents like this. When you aren't doing what they want they do this. The way he tears down her job and her concern for him in response angers me. She isn’t doing this to upset him but to help him. (not that he can see that) Lucy is a loving and protective person. She wants to do right by those she loves. What should be received as her caring is defensive in return. He’s attacking her every step of the way.
Tumblr media
Melissa kills me in this scene. Honestly the entire episode with all her interactions with her dad. That look of devastation on her face ugh. I can relate. That emotional dismissal and really almost abuse she’s taking from him. That hurt she’s feeling in his disappointment. I just want to hug her. I too have parents like this so it hits home with me little harder.
I said back in 1x14 with plain clothes day how it seemed Tim was the first person to really fight for her. Believe in her. Support her. Why it meant so much that he did what he did that day. Tim probably has no idea the impact that made on her. By standing by her side the way he did. She obviously has little to zero support from her father in the career she’s chosen. That much is very clear in this exchange with him.
Tumblr media
Even Talia can sense the tension from outside the room. Makes a comment to Gino while looking in. Its very evident you can feel chills coming in waves from her father. Lucy is still such a good daughter and stays anyways. Not that he deserves it….
Tumblr media
We head back to Tim and Nolan. They have a credible threat for the safe house. Their witness Hayes starts to give a little mouth about his safety. Tim gets into ultra hard ass mode. I don’t hate it not gonna lie haha Doesn’t let this guy get under his skin. Shows no sign of backing down. Mmm. Don’t mess with my Tim.
Tumblr media
The episode title lives up to its name and an earthquake ensues. Rocking the hospital in a bad way. I admire Lucy’s gut reaction to cover her father. I just love her so much. So loyal and willing to protect family even when they really don’t deserve it. This resonates with me so much. I too am the same way. Have that Italian familia loyalty drilled into to me. Taking care of family even when they really don’t deserve it.
Tumblr media
Shortly after the quake the safe house is under fire. Something about watching Tim in action is so sexy. It’s like watching confidence in motion. Especially in this scene. Also very commanding and sure of what he wants to do. Tells Nolan to take their witness out back. If he doesn’t they’re sitting ducks. Nolan asks what if there is a shooter out there too? His reply is the best. ‘Then you’ll shoot them.’ LOL love this man.
Tumblr media
They make it out and head to the beach. Assuming this is a good a hiding spot as any. This is such a good scene. Apart from fact Tim looks fine af just leaning against that railing. Its not long before they're found. They soon figure out Hayes has a tracker on him. That the men that attacked the safe house weren't there to kill Hayes but to rescue him. Hayes makes a crass comment about Capt Anderson. How they should just let him go or they’re gonna lose another buddy in line of duty. Tim knocks him out instantly. Get em' Tim! What a schmuck. Tells Nolan hook him up for them to find as a lure.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
They dispatch of the rescue team fairly quickly. Once again love watching Tim in action. There’s a nice little nod between Tim and John once they’re done. Nice to see. He knows how to reward good work. He was crucial in their take down. Tim makes sure he gets a little attaboy hehe Lucy has softened him up a bit for sure.
Tumblr media
We go back to Lucy at the hospital. She breaks my heart in this scene. Melissa crushes this 110 percent with the way her voice breaks getting emotional. Telling her father how she was taught to be true to herself. That this job is who she is, that it makes her so happy. (that should be enough) She goes on to say she knows he hates the system. That it’s designed to punish people and not care for them. Then strongly defends herself as a person. Basically pleading with him to accept/and understand her and her job.
Tumblr media
I commend how strongly Lucy backs the fact that she can make a difference. That the system can't change unless there is someone in it to fight. After this statement her dad relents a little. Earlier he heard her talking to the victim of that first call her and Talia took. He was in the hallway listening. He heard how the kid's mother was going to face charges but her frame of mind would be taken into account.
That if the son could be a character witness on her behalf they could get her the helps she needs. He tells her she was honest and kind. That he was impressed. You think hey we’re making progress. He’s finally understanding her and her choice in career. Won’t be going after her so much now. Hoping his perception of her has shifted a little.
Tumblr media
Then his patient who broke his arm walks in….At first Lucy has no idea who this guy is. Her father keeps trying to shoo him away. Then Lucy being the smart cookie she is puts it’s together. Immediately she has to do her job and arrest this man. You can see the regret on her face but it’s her duty to arrest him. She has no choice. Something her father is failing to understand.
Tumblr media
It’s insane to me he could use logic just moments ago. Then turn on her so quickly. He could do the same thing that mothers kid is going to do. Be a character witness and get him the help he needs in the system. He’s so cold to her when she says she’ll be back after his surgery. Tells her not to bother. He would rather her compromise her own ethics and morales for his needs. Sacrifice his own daughter and her career for his patient. She like Tim has a moral compass she refuses to corrupt even for family.
Tumblr media
That heartbreak on her face devastates me though. Now don't get me wrong, I’m with her dad with the system being broken. It is. Mental health needs to be addressed more especially in situations such as this. What upsets me is how her father treats her the entire episode. He should be proud of the fact that her morale code is so strong. That she isn't willing to be compromised. Instead he scolds her. Ridicules Lucy. Making her feel small and shameful for her job. When he's just upset she wouldn't bend the rules cause it was his patient.
Basically saying Lucy is part of the problem when she takes William away. When she is one the most empathetic humans to wear a badge. She’s desperately trying to reach out for him to understand. To accept her. All she gets in return is discouragement and emotional abuse. I know that intense reception of disappointment/guilt/shame you get from your parents. It guts you. When they should be building her up and supporting her they do the opposite. She’s so resilient and then you meet her parents and see why she is.
Tumblr media
The look of utter devastation as she leads this guy out. Logically she know her father is in the wrong. But that emotional part of you that wants that approval so badly doesn't care about logic. Worst part of that scene is she had it for a split second till it was about HIS patient. When the same procedure can be followed for William. Will it be easy? No but it can be done, things put in place to help his patient. But he can’t see it that way. Only see how its affecting him. Then just like earlier casts her away because he disapproved of her decision.
Tumblr media
Talia see’s Lucy writing up the arrest report and checks in. Lucy says she wants to add a mental health report addendum to it. Talia asks if she really thinks that or trying to get back in her fathers food graces? Lucy is firm in her reply. Says she’s pretty sure that’s impossible but knows he’s not wrong. That this guy doesn’t need prison he needs help. (she knew this before and helped out that kid's mother same way but Talia doesn't know that) Tells her was she’s going to do whatever she can to get it for him.
Tumblr media
Talia approves and tells her 'Good' Once again being a good person despite her parents. Lucy then asks was that a test? Her reply is too funny haha As I said earlier this pair up was much better second go around. Not dominated by the Nolan BS. They had good rapport and even got a “test” she passed. Rough rough episode for Lucy emotionally though. She at least gets to end it with a laugh and a smile.
Tumblr media
This ep gave us some insight to one of her parents. Little bit of her upbringing. We can see why she’s so damn driven to be a good cop. That instinct to prove your parents wrong can be a great motivator. You want to show them how capable you are. So they can be proud of you. Sadly despite her best efforts they seem to only feel disappointment.
Or as we see later with Lucy's mom her thinking this is a 'hobby' for Lucy. Like this was just dress up and a game. She wants her to come back to reality. Once again belittling her dedication and passion for her job. That's a discussion for a later ep though. Sucks when it’s both parents and not just one. Something I can also relate to. Both discouraging and not supportive whatsoever. Trivializing Lucy and her life choices just because it’s not what they wanted for her. Fastest way to drive your kids away and have them never return.
~~~~~
Side notes- Non chenford Didn’t really have much tbh. Whole ep didn’t have them lol I was just hot for Tim this whole ep hahah What else is new I know. They both had really good SL's in this one, but I always miss them when they’re apart the whole time.
That’s all she wrote for 1x17 thank you all for your interest. Blows my mind. Will always shout you all at for your likes, comments and reblogs. They make my whole day when I get them :) see you all in 1x18
🦝 Wanted to know, do you think Camilla being more frequent in the story serves for something? Besides adding to Luz's character (which I didn't really feel significant towards for other reasons). She's the protag's mom, she cares about her kid, she's a good person with no bad bone (kinda bland). I'm just thinking after Eda being pushed twoards the motherly side so much do we even need Camila to fit that role anymore? She seems on board with Luz's shenanigans just because, no restrictions what so ever.
Camila… is the opposite of Raine. Amazing character who's actively detrimental to the story almost just by existing? Especially as she is. Because she is a practical saint at this point with how much understanding she shows about everything… And that's a problem when it comes to Luz's character.
And one I'm not going to talk about because criticizing Luz gets you lit on fire by this fandom and I don't feel like it.
Instead, let's talk about the rest that has to do with her. Like your point with Eda! Why does Luz grab onto Eda so much when she has a mom who shows her such love and care? Who, as far as the show has depicted, has literally only ever once tried to repress her child and that's after Luz accidentally assaulted her principal with snakes. So, you know, did her job as a mom by being like "Child, you do not bring dangerous animals you cannot control to school. Here are consequences." Meanwhile, Eda is her magic teacher but it takes close to Adventure in the Elements for Eda and Luz to even have a truly amicable relationship. Before then, it's fairly transactional and with Eda not being all that on board with the idea of actually taking care of this weird human thing. It's not actively hostile (always) before then but it takes a WHILE and the show doesn't really let them actually spend a lot of dedicated time together. How many episodes do they spend where their story is about the two spending time together in S1? This same question goes for King btw and is really detrimental to the found family angle of TOH.
Amphibia got around this problem of giving Anne a loving set of parents and a found family by having the show actually be about the fucking Plantars and Anne. At least like three quarts of season 1 of Amphibia is just dedicated to their growing relationship and understanding of each other. How they conflict, how they better each other. By the end of S1, you understand why they call each other family because they've been through so much. They don't even have to have almost died for each other to earn that claim. TOH… Honestly kind of does really need to be able to say "I sacrificed myself for you so we MUST be close."
Because otherwise… What does Eda give Luz that Camila never did? Eda judges Luz WAAAAAAAY fucking more than Camila ever did. Eda mocks Luz more. Eda dismisses Luz's interests and eccentricities more. I know this may sound wild because of 'mama Eda' but more of you need to remember how often Luz ran off from Eda in S1 because Eda wasn't doing something Luz was interested in or was just not willing to actually do her job as teacher.
The other side of things I'll touch on is her turning out to be a secret nerd. I think this was a terrible choice on SO MANY LEVELS. It creates an almost us vs. them feel where Luz appears to think Camila can only ever have shown her understanding by being the same as her, all the backfill and retconning to make it happen makes Camila look like a questionable parent because while supporting your child is one thing, NEVER being willing to criticize them is an entirely different one and… It also took away perhaps the most unique thing about Camila:
She was a good parent who showed her child understanding… While being one who could never relate.
In most media where you have the outcast child, you have one of two parents. The quirky older generation that is very much so just like their child and so if they don't get along, it's because they do it the old ways or are a bit too caring. That or you get Stoic and Hiccup from How to Train Your Dragon. The parent who doesn't understand and doesn't approve of their child's outcast ways until the child proves the effectiveness of their ways and gets their approval.
Now, both of these aren't bad. I love Stoic and Hiccup and the generational thing can often provide good comedy and its own unique frictions, even if it's done less. Camila was genuinely special though. She appeared to be someone who'd never properly understand fandom or Luz's obsession with things being online or how she'd obsess over one character and she was FINE WITH THAT. She was okay with Luz being the way she was so long as it didn't hurt anyone. And when it did, what did Camila focus on?
Not the life skills. Not the attempt to make her more normal. Camila focused on the fact that it might bring Luz more friends. Because Camila didn't want those odd parts of Luz gone, she wanted her daughter to be happy and she didn't think the things that gave her success would lead to making Luz happy. But friends? Friends are a good bet for anyone.
But no, just, you know, throw that out. She's always been a nerd. She's always had some in to Luz's world. Maybe not a perfect one, she still doesn't watch anime, but she knows the struggles and joys so why wouldn't she be able to support them? Why wouldn't she support them in the first place? I mean, they COULD have actually gone with "I don't want her suffering the same pain as me," which they try to claim, but… Camila would have had to be more condemnatory then. If being a nerd and an outcast hurt her, and she doesn't want Luz hurt, why didn't she do more to stop Luz from developing these weird hobbies and interests?
And here is where we get to the biggest problem with Camila: She is a subversion without a point. The Isles are VERY obviously meant to be Luz's real home. It is where she is meant to be spiritually. Most media that decides to make the magical other world simply the more appealing option, the one that is across the board better for the main character, makes their home life shit. This is so favoring that world and eventually staying there permanently makes sense for the character and the narrative. You root for them to do so.
Making Camila so good complicates that a lot. It raises a lot of questions that could be explored… With a lot of time and a LOT more criticism of Luz. Vee is RIGHT when she calls out Luz for being a fucking terrible person for running away from her mom for the reasons she did. That she did have it good and had the potential to have it be a lot better. I have a blog saved in drafts about how Yesterday's Lie irrevocably changed my opinion on Luz because it pointed out blatantly the fact that lie referenced… Is a lot of what Luz claimed was other's faults when they were her own.
But the show doesn't have the time nor the interest to actually tackle the questions. Instead, Camila continues to be such a saint that she barely has a character. She'd live in the Isles if it made Luz happy.
Because like so much of the show, Camila starts as a good idea that feels like they were made that way to claim they were special without doing anything special with them. Also still talked about Luz more than I meant to. Kind of hard with the character's mother I guess. Can't wait for this to be the post to gain traction then. *sigh* ======
Your fanfics have given me life and continue to do so, thank you so much. And I always find that reading your posts and ideas and thoughts about the show are much more grounded and realistic than a lot of criticisms out there for whatever the show does - the internet makes it very easy to feel like the show can only do wrong, but your posts are always refreshingly understandable and relatable in terms of how you're approaching this new WOT content (like the rest of us are) and I love it.
You're great.
aww, thank you so much!! <33 i'm so glad you've been enjoying my fics and my show posts & thoughts! i started with the show, season 1 was my first-ever intro to wheel of time (i'd never even heard of it before let alone read it) and i read all the books after s1 but before s2, so i think those of us who were in the show-to-book pipeline naturally have a different perspective than those who were in the book-to-show pipeline! i will be the first to admit that i'm very biased in the show's favor and always leap to its defense and talk about how things are better in the show than in the books..................aka, the natural bias of My First Version Is Best that many longtime readers have in the opposite direction!
i'd been worried that might not hold true for the seasons after 1 since for all of these ones the books WERE my first version, but i'm thrilled to report that, in fact, i'm still loving the show just as much as, if not more than, i did as a show-only during s1! while reading EOTW, i have a vivid memory of reading the scene where rand tells mat he won't leave him after the lightning strike when mat is blind and immediately going "oh!!!!!! this must be the scene that the 'no matter what happens i'm here' barn scene from s1 was adapted from!!! how exciting, instead of only one scene of rand professing his devotion to mat, i now get TWO!!!" and i think that really informed my approach to having two different mediums. i care about emotional beats more than specific events, so if the show can capture the same emotional beat by using a different event/scene than the books, that's fine by me - not just fine, but excellent, because now i have TWO scenes to love!
and of course there's nothing wrong with feeling differently or with feeling very loyal to the book version of things! it's just not how my own brain works, personally, at least for WOT. i will never and CAN'T ever have the same kind of 20-year read-these-books-at-a-formative-age attachment & loyalty to the books that so many readers do, and thus my reactions to and takes on the show are often different from theirs. and i'm glad you've been finding them relatable! <3
(plus, i just really love thinking about how to adapt the books to screen, i love thinking about how practical concerns (actor & set availability etc) might affect the story, i just geek out about all that stuff and find it so much fun to think about haha but i didn't start thinking in that way until fairly recently and it's really been a game-changer for parsing out book-to-show changes!)
So, having just finished both seasons of Stranger (kdrama) and I can definitely recommend it, though would add a few caveats.
Firstly, you really do have to pay attention to get the most out of this series. It's not really a chill series to have on whilst doing other stuff. Obviously this applies to the plot stuff but it also applies to the character arcs too because a lot of it is much more subtle than the standard fare.
Secondly, season 1 and season 2 are their own beasts. Their focuses are different though a lot of the cast is the same and their character arcs can clearly be followed across. Season 1 is a lot more about characters outscheming each other, the audience finding out things from different people and keeping track of who knows what. Murder mystery/character drama. Season two by contrast is much more grounded in real life politics of the prosecution vs police rights. It's a lot more about the realism in what moving up in a corrupt system entails and characters having their ethics around that challenged over and again. You can watch s1 without needing to watch s2 because it's fairly self-contained. I do like both a lot but think objectively s1 is better and early s2 is intentionally frustrating at times.
Rest below cut:
The series follows the prosecution (with hwang simok) and the police (with han yeojin) as they start to investigate a murder that is more than it seems at first glance. This has a domino effect greater than anyone could have realised.
Hwang Simok is fairly emotionless due to brain surgery he had as a teenager to treat oversensitive hearing (yeahno just go with it). Minor spoilers ig that he's not entirely emotionless but he is very muted in his expression and has other side-effects from the surgery. He doesn't always get on with people and often either misses or intentionally ignores social cues if he thinks they're not important.
Han Yeojin meanwhile is much better at the social side of things and so comes off more professional, but she definitely has her endearing sides without it removing her competence. She likes manga and to doodle but isn't necessarily good at it (this is important to me okay).
The dynamic between the two mains is one of my favourite things. There's an underlying trust and they both help the other to open up and to figure out pieces of the puzzle. And tbh watching their characters develop is all in the nuances.
Other characters include the shadiest guy you can imagine who is also unfortunately charismatic; a mentee to hwang simok who has her own agenda; and many many glasses wearing prosecutors.
The main focus is on trying to figure out what's going on and it keeps you guessing whilst leaving enough pieces to suspect nearly every character at some point or another.
I wanted to finally start listening to redacted but I have NO idea where to start 😭 do you have suggestions?
*sucks in deep breath* There’s a couple ways to answer this.
My first instinct is to literally just say “go to the playlist titled ‘Everything’ and start at the beginning and work your way up” because Redacted’s lore can be confusing if you haven’t heard it in the order it came out in. I listened to Geordi’s first video the day after it dropped as my first video and had no idea what was going on. Then went to Elliott’s playlist and was even more confused because that playlist is major story heavy unlike some of the others
But I understand that the Everything playlist (while most useful for lore digesting and didn’t exist yet when I found the channel and wasn’t an option for me) can most definitely be overwhelming. It’s long, I won’t deny it. But it also gives you the space to get to know each of the characters a little bit at a time
If you don’t want to go that direction though, I have two decent options:
Start with Freelancer, Season 1. You get a fairly good rundown of most of the rules of the magic system, and the difference between daemons/demons, and humans. Redacted’s d(a)emons use the word in the old, more Fae connotation than a Biblical interpretation. They’re more akin to simply supernatural magical entities rather than creatures of evil and damnation or whatever.
So Freelancer S1 isn’t a bad place to start before moving on to whichever characters strike your fancy
But the other of my aforementioned two options is Avior’s story (the playlist is now titled “Sovereign State”).
Now, anyone who’s reading this and has known me for a while is probably chuckling like “of course Star is recommending her favorite character that she never shuts up about loving” but hear me out: Avior’s story has a lot of heavy, heavy worldbuilding lore all dumped into one place for quick access, but is almost entirely separate from the rest of the world Redacted has built, so it’s less complicated than jumping right in with, say, trying to keep track of the three werewolves and how they all connect to each other but also the vampires. Avior’s story is self-contained for the moment and season 1 of it is wrapping up right now so there are going to be some resolutions to a few things hopefully
Heed my warning though: Erik (Redacted) isn’t afraid of tackling some darker topics and heavy situations. If that’s not something you’re comfortable with, pay attention to the Content Warnings he puts in all of his video descriptions with applicable warnings. If you’re not into Yandere characters be mindful that he has three-ish. One of the three has mostly had his story finished but will occasionally pop up for a random reappearance. One of the three hasn’t seemed super Yandere to me yet but I’m sure it’ll get worse. The third is definitely one to be mindful of too because it’s much more magic-based.
Also Inversion and both seasons of The Imperium AU are dark and heavy so if you’re gonna listen to them you might wanna be cautious
So, TL;DR, either do the Everything playlist, Freelancer Season 1, or Sovereign State (technically season 1). From there you should have mostly enough information on the worldbuilding and such to pick and choose whatever catches your fancy from there. Though I’d recommend maybe the werewolves first after those three because they’re less story heavy and just kinda slice of life and also Milo is sexy moving on
If you have any questions about the lore or the plots please feel free to come back. I get questions all the time looking for explanations (usually from another video that the asker just couldn’t quite remember). There’s no shame in it. I’m the resident Lore Gremlin anyway and love helping people understand the world as best I know it
Erik also has a timeline (it’s in his Linktree in the video description of all his videos) but I don’t recommend reading it outright just yet. Because you will be confused and overwhelmed. Let the videos guide you first and then go to the timeline for clarifications
good omens s2 episode reactions: 6
i just finished good omens season 2.
you know how people say "screaming crying throwing up" jokingly? i'm literally at least one of those (screamed into a pillow) and kinda close to another (partly unrelated life reasons making me feel like crying but it counts)
it's not supposed to end like that!!!! crowley and aziraphale going their separate ways!! they kissed but not at all in the way most people imagined it would be!!!!
okay i will attempt to give a summary of my thoughts for the whole episode the way i have for the rest of the season. (see other posts: e1, e2, e3, e4, e5.)
shax is surprisingly good at hitting people with their deepest insecurities. it's a little inconsistent with other parts of her character, like not understanding sarcasm, but it works well for her being the main antagonist of this season. good on maggie for standing up to her!! bad on maggie for accidentally letting her into the bookshop.
it's a nice touch that aziraphale has battery-powered candles and lots of fire extinguishers to make sure the bookshop fire never happens again. also quite a reasonable justification for having multiple fire extinguishers for nina and maggie to use as weapons. lesbians fighting demons!
interesting revelations as crowley in heaven reads/experiences gabriel's file. i was confused at the time about why gabriel would say no to armageddon 2, but it makes sense after the beezlebub montage.
the gabriel/beezlebub shippers were right!?!!?! massive win for them. they really speedran aziraphale and crowley's whole arc, with making an agreement out of convenience, spending more time together enjoying human things, falling in love, realizing their own sides weren't as good as they seemed, ultimately running away together. the use of the song "every day" was sweet. it seemed kind of out-of-character for s1 gabriel and beezlebub but i suppose people change.
the "war" aziraphale started was over fairly quickly. bit anticlimactic.
the metatron was a plot twist. he seems very similar to aziraphale in a lot of ways. if aziraphale had had him as a mentor-figure from the beginning, things would have turned out very differently.
nina and maggie are so real for calling out crowley and aziraphale on meddling in their love life. they recognize how similar the two pairs are! probably a good choice that nina and maggie aren't going to immediately date since nina just got broken up with, but it's made clear that they care for each other and will probably date once nina is ready.
oh gosh we have to talk about the conversation between crowley and aziraphale. crowley has finally gotten up the courage to confess his feelings after six millennia!! only aziraphale is intending a completely different conversation about the metatron's offer. oh aziraphale can't you see why being an angel again and being your second in command isn't crowley's dream scenario??! it would mean crowley giving up his whole identity. when aziraphale was talking about how heaven is good and right, i could practically hear crowley thinking "you still believe that?!" it feels like aziraphale is taking a step backward. from his perspective though, it must sound like the perfect offer, and you can see how excited he is to tell crowley, and how devastated when crowley doesn't like it. and they revert back to their millennia-old dynamic of crowley wheedling aziraphale to go off and choose their own side, and aziraphale retreating to the safety of his moral high ground. bravo to david tennant and micheal sheen for their acting, but also they broke my heart.
the kiss. i'm screaming and internally sobbing. i had it spoiled for me that there was a kiss in this season (unfortunately, it's one of the first suggestions when you type good omens into youtube), but i wasn't expecting it like this.
bentley, now is not the time to play "a nightingale sang in berkley square."
to be clear, i'm not exactly mad at neil gaiman and the writers. they're obviously setting up a season 3 (which amazon better give them) and hopefully have a happy ending in mind for aziraphale and crowley. but that will take years and in the meantime i'm shaking with frustration!
i'm off to write a post-s2 fic maybe? or just unblock all the good omens spoiler tags and reblog a flood of posts. or cry.
Hannigram and Wishbone by Richard Siken
I love this poem so much , and I need to talk about it for a second , especially since certain lines can link so well with hannibal and will , I tried to keep each part as short as possible ,,,
all the quotes are straight from the poem :]
' I took the bullet for all the wrong reasons, I’d just as soon kill you myself '
ok , so starting out with a fairly obvious one , this aligns well with their overall dynamic , especially on will's side in the earlier seasons when he had more conflicting emotion towards hannibal . like in s2 when he sends mason after hannibal but ends up saving him before he can be fully lowered into the pig pen , this idea of wanting the other dead yet not wanting it at the same time , ' can't live with him , can't live without him '
' I say I want you inside me and you hold my head underwater, I say I want you inside me and you split me open with a knife '
' I want you inside me ' can easily refer to a number of things , though in the poem it does mean it in the literal more nsfw sense ( which does also work for will and hannibal ) , it can also refer to the more obvious comparison of cannibalism , and also the idea of being behind the veil or between the stitches of the person suit that they both wear , I want you inside me as in I want you to be within me to be able to properly see me and know me .
this line from the poem works well in the context of s2 when they are both attempting to kill each other as a way of flirting , especially since will sent matthew brown to kill hannibal when he was swimming , hence the ' and you hold my head underwater ' . and then also in mizumono when hannibal guts will , this aligns with ' and you split me open with a knife ' . the line shifts from hannibals point of view at the end of s1 and the start of s2 where he has framed will and wants him to understand and see him , and yet he is rejected at first as will is very determined to have him killed or convicted , this is the whole ' I want you to see me and be with me behind the veil and you need to be here in order to understand that ' and yet will ultimately tries to kill him for it at the start . then as the point of view shifts to will at the end of s2 when he realises this is what he actually wants and he returns to hannibal and chooses him in the end , it is too late and his betrayal is too great , and so he is also rejected as punishment for his actions .
they both clearly want to be seen and understood by eachother at this point , especially in s2 as they begin to interact with this part of their relationship more and more , even if it is still part of the honeytrap plot , its undeniable that will had awoken something inside himself and saw something in hannibal that led him to choose him and continue to follow him .
' I swear, I end up feeling empty, like you’ve taken something out of me, and I have to search my body for the scars, thinking Did he find that one last tender place to sink his teeth in? '
s1 will graham through and through , the vulnerability he ended up having with hannibal , the manipulation , how hannibal began isolating him and became his main support structure . will sleepwalking and losing time , having to 'search [his] body for scars ' when he comes around again because he doesn't know what has happened , and even more so from an audience perspective when we see things in s2 like hannibal putting abigails ear down his throat while he isn't conscious
also the idea of ' sink his teeth in ' is very visceral and I love it , shows the more animalistic sense hidden behind the person suit while also being a haha cannibal joke
' I’ll be your slaughterhouse, your killing floor, your morgue, and final resting '
hannibal and will have a form of obsessive love for one another that becomes all encompassing , hannibal even moved to a whole other continent with a different person and yet all he could think about was will , and the same goes to will when we consider how he was able to find hannibal and how he always went back to him .
this line really speaks to their relationship as a whole , its somewhat grotesque yet powerful and alluring , and there is a sense of quiet peace , like the calm in the eye of a storm . they could only ever die by eachothers hand , and neither would have it any other way , they will always find each other , and in a way , they were eachothers ' final resting ' . whether you believe they survived the fall or not , they definitely were able to find that peace within eachother in the moment before they fell off the cliff , that sense of belonging and that this could not have gone any other way , this was always what was meant to happen . they are equals , and they were predestined to die by eachothers hand , either during the fall or long after
' Don’t you see, it’s like I’ve swallowed your house keys, and it feels so natural, like the bullet was already there, like it’s been waiting inside me the whole time. '
will realising how he is so alike to hannibal towards the end of s2 and the whole of s3 , these acts he commits feel so natural to him and its as if he has tried to conceal this part of himself for so long , hidden behind the cold and off-putting exterior he puts on for his job , yet beneath it he knows what he is capable of , hannibal saw it and will saw it ripple beneath the surface the moment he pulled the trigger on hobbs . from that point onwards , he has an internal battle with himself until admitting to hannibal that what he did felt powerful
furthermore , in s2 , when he kills and displays randall tier with hannibal as part of his becoming , it seems to be no bother to him , he doesn't at any point seem to regret his actions or think about any repercussions he may suffer from them , he is already comfortable with this nature of killing and he willingly then eats tier alongside hannibal , it comes easily to him , as if its ' been waiting inside [him] the whole time '
' Do you want it? Do you want anything I have? Will you throw me to the ground like you mean it, reach inside, and wrestle it out with your bare hands? '
I think that this quote can be likened to hannibal in s3a where he is so desperate for will , and he is able to see how far will has come in his acceptance of this part of himself and they each gain eachothers forgiveness , now that hannibal knows about will and knows that he's still chasing after him , even after the events of mizumono , he so desperately wants to be wanted by him , and seeing will doing so is such a relief
the part ' will you throw me to the ground like you mean it ' after will in s2 saying how often he wanted to kill hannibal himself ' with [his] (bare) hands ' alongside the idea of will now being able to as he is much more comfortable with this part of himself in s3 , and hannibal wants that , he wants to see will kill and he wants to see him mean it fully . especially after his betrayal at the end of s2 , hannibal needs to know that will is no longer fooling him and that he can indeed be the person that belongs behind the veil with him . they aren't kidding around anymore and will isn't honeytrapping , they are able to be themselves
' If you love me, Henry, you don’t love me in a way I understand. '
will being confused by his own emotions towards hannibal , from s1 right through to the end of s3 , going from annoyance to reliance to need to fear to anger/hatred to realisation to acceptance to betrayal to sadness to forgiveness to love . ultimately culminating in the line ' is hannibal in love with me ? ' and bedelia confirming that he does have a very unique way of loving will , and yet it is still the most all-encompassing thing , will is very unsure about his own feelings towards hannibal in s3b up until then when he pieces it all together and I do believe that is when he realises that he does love him back . will's silences tend to speak louder than words , and his silence after bedelia essentially asks him if he also loves hannibal , speaks volumes , and almost definitely shows him having this realisation and finally coming to terms with it even if he does not fully understand how or why these feelings have come about
' There’s a bottle of whiskey in the trunk of the Chevy and a dead man at our feet staring up at us like we’re something interesting. '
this links back to s1e1 with will claiming ' I don't find you that interesting ' and hannibal replying ' you will ' , this line links to them later on in the show , perhaps with randall tier in s2 or later in s3 when they do eventually kill together or have some resemblance of that , the idea that they are now so much more intertwined with eachother and now they are much more ' interesting ' to one another
also will drinks whiskey so uhh , there's your other link
' This is where the evening splits in half, Henry, love or death. Grab an end, pull hard, and make a wish. '
this is reminiscent of their dinner the night before the kitchen scene of mizumono , hannibal knowing about wills betrayal and still offering him that chance to confess and suggesting that they leave that night and not leave a trace except for a note for alana , he gave will an opportunity to choose between ' love or death ' , and when will did not end up confessing , hannibal toasts ' to the truth then , and all its consequences ' , a thinly veiled way of showing his knowledge and how the future events will proceed , that is where the evening splits in half , that is when hannibal had to make his decision about how the next evening would plan out , even though will was technically still undecided about whose side he was on , he had unknowingly sealed his fate with hannibal
.
bam , I highly recommend reading the full poem , here is a link if you would like to :
there's obviously a fxck ton more I could talk about but I shall leave it at that snvdsbdb
fabina h/cs?
Oh yes I was hoping someone would ask me this. Warning this got very long I have a lot of thoughts and feelings
They are so sweet it makes everyone wanna barf sometimes
In S1 some of them (Mick, Mara, Alfie, Patricia) place bets on when they're gonna get together. Mick wins
During S2 Amber tries to get them together in a multitude of different ways. She tries mistletoe, the old "trapping them in a small dark room together" trick, conspiring with Patricia and Alfie to ensure they just so ~happen~ to find themselves alone together, etc.
Throughout S3, they literally never stopped thinking about each other
After graduation, it's a really turbulent and transitionary period in Fabian's life, and he has to assess what he really wants. And he realizes he never stopped loving Nina, and he wants to be with her again
Amber actively encourages him to go after her, saying he'll regret it for the rest of his life if he doesn't
Nina realizes the past year without him has been miserable. It's been awful not having her best friend by her side to talk to and confide in and do things with, and she's missed him so much. So when he reaches out, all of her feelings come rushing back with an intensity, and she decides she doesn't want to lose him again, and they get back together. For good this time.
They go to college in America together, and Fabian ultimately moves to her hometown of Cleveland to be with her
After college they work at a museum together looking at historical stuff all day long. They get to nerd out and they work together well; it's a dream job
Nina tries her best to introduce Fabian to American culture. Some of it is a bigger culture shock than others. Nina is always incredibly amused when he doesn't get words right or he gets flustered and confused at certain customs
He's not sure how he feels about American fast food
American pie, however, is his new favorite thing. Especially Nina's gran's pies
The Fourth of July scares him. But barbecues are nice
Nina is a fan of Cleveland's baseball team. She takes him to a game, and by god is he confused. He has trouble following. The first game is a lost cause. But once Nina points out how dependent the game is on math, then he starts to get the hang of it. A little bit
American driving, however, is horrifying to Fabian. Nina's a pretty good driver, and Fabian's fairly good (if not a bit stiff and nervous) at driving in the UK, but in America it's a whole different animal. Not only are they on the other side of the road, but the drivers here are fast and aggressive. It's very scary. The ONLY reason he eventually learns to do it the American way is because he wants to be able to take Nina out and be a competent enough man to drive a car around
Speaking of cars: one summer they definitely go on a cross-country road trip, just the two of them. It's meant to bring them closer and be romantic, and it is. They love looking at all the sights together, and Fabian is amazed by the sheer diversity of landscape and how gorgeous parts of the country can be. He TRIES to split the driving 50/50, but America is just so goddam BIG, like intimidatingly huge, and he's not used to driving for that long. The driving ends up being more like 70/30 in Nina's favor, but she doesn't mind. She gives Fabian the responsibility of making a road trip playlist, and he knocks it out of the park
At home, they enjoy cozy nights by the fireside, reading and snuggling under blankets
Sweaters! They are sweater people and I enjoy the image of them snuggling together in sweaters
Handwritten letters! They write each other handwritten letters all the time, especially in the summer between season 1-2 and the period of time between graduation and Fabian making the move to America. They both keep every single letter they receive and each keep them stored in a sentimental little box
They like to frequent old/used bookstores and antique shops. Their place is filled to the brim with odd knickknacks and collectibles that they find, and they have an entire wall with shelves piled high with books
They don't need a lot of fancy stuff, and they don't care about being high-class; they don't care much about appearances, and they don't need a lot. All they care about really is being together.
They learn to get better at communication and not let anyone else's opinion about their relationship impact their relationship. They're the only ones that know what's best for them, and they take things at their own pace
Nina can get overly emotional and stressed sometimes, and Fabian's her rock. That's how it's always been, and that's how it always will be
They love to watch the discovery channel and the national geographic channel, along with netflix documentaries
They fuckin LOVE escape rooms, they use every excuse they can to go to escape rooms
Nina takes Fabian to the rock and roll hall of fame, and he's like a kid in a candy store
They are frequent patrons of their local coffee shop, to the point where all the baristas know who they are
They are very cheesy and sentimental all the time. Most everything they do is very thoughtful and has some kind of meaning
They like to write cute notes to each other and leave them around the house
It takes Fabian forever to actually propose to Nina, to the point where he gets calls from Amber just about every day asking when she's getting an engagement announcement. He just wanted to be careful and deliberate about it and make sure everything was perfect
He makes sure the proposal is simple and romantic. He sets up a candlelit dinner, the lights are low, he talks to her softly and sweetly and tells her he loves her and pops the question
Nina, surprisingly, does not cry. Fabian, however, definitely does when she says yes
He proposes with a family ring; his grandmother's ring. It's very sentimental and has a lot of history behind it, and we all know Nina loves that stuff, and the history and story makes her very emotional
He does what he should have done in S2 instead of writing a poem: he writes her a song and plays it for her on the guitar. It's her favorite thing he's ever done for her.
After the engagement they tell Amber before they tell anyone else, because she'd kill them if they didn't
They surprise her with a video call, and they don't tell her at first, but then Nina surprises her and shows off the ring, and Amber screams so loud they're convinced she's going to break glass.
Amber is even more excited than they are, she talks with them absolutely non-stop about their wedding. She even tries to take control of it at some point
Their wedding is a fairly small wedding; it takes place at an outdoor venue in the spring, at a beautiful location just outside her hometown in America. Mick is the best man and Amber is the maid of honor. Amber gives an incredibly emotional MOH speech and sobs buckets. Gran walks Nina down the aisle
Her wedding dress looks a little something like this; definitely something with long lacy sleeves
They have 3 kids, all girls
The oldest is Evelyn, named after Nina's gran. She's got dark hair, Nina's curls, Nina’s light blue eyes, and she looks like Fabian. She got Nina's courageous leadership side, she's very adventurous
The middle child is Sarah. She looks like someone legit photocopied Nina. Same hair color, same curls, same eyes, same general facial features. She got the intellectual and bookish side of both of them
The youngest is Eloise, kind of a little bit after Sarah's mother but mostly they just liked the name. Often they call her "Lou" and she definitely goes by that when she's older. She somehow got to be strawberry blonde, has less curls than her sisters, she has Fabian's blue-green eyes, and is a mix of them both when it comes to facial features. She got the part of them that liked to sneak around and break the rules; as she gets older she becomes very rebellious, and Nina jokes "are we sure this child came from me and not Patricia?"
All 3 girls are little troublemakers and they're partners in crime
At some points when the girls are a bit much Fabian gets stressed and shouts "we're outnumbered!!!!!"
Amber is their aunt and showers the girls with expensive presents all the time, especially clothes, which all of the girls LOVE. Nina and Fabian accuse her of spoiling them and she says "If I can't spoil them then what's the point of being the rich beloved aunt?"
The girls do indeed love Amber, all three of them adore her
When the girls get older they find the boxes of letters their parents wrote to each other, they think it's very sweet
Even as they get older, the two of them always set aside time to be romantic with each other
And they remain each other's best friend and confidante forever and ever
yo please feel free to keep sending me these! or asking me my opinions on stuff! this is a lot of fun!
Do you think G&S had any serious fights/arguments after they got together? And who is more likely to say sorry first?
hi, anon!
i honestly don't see them having serious fights or arguments.
that's not to say they never occasionally disagree—because of course sometimes they do—but rather just that when they do, at most, i think they bicker, a la what we see in reboot episode 01x02 "honeymoon in vegas," rather than out-and-out "fight."
the thing is, for as much as they have a reputation for "poor communication," once they're finally a couple, on the few occasions in canon when we see them disagreeing (both in the original series and in the reboot), they actually demonstrate some fairly decent discussion skills in order to resolve their problems.
see, for example, the events of episode 07x06 "burn out" in the original series: between grissom having a migraine and being upset by the nature of the case, he's got a short fuse. he ends up taking his frustrations out on greg, chewing him out for playing loud music and for suggesting a nontraditional experiment as part of the investigation (which grissom feels will be a waste of time dead end). sara watches this exchange go down and clearly isn't pleased with it, particularly as she is aware that greg's nerves have been a little fried lately from dealing with the fallout from the demetrius james incident. while she could confront grissom straight-up about being a jerk to their son, she waits until they're alone together and instead very quietly and calmly reminds him of greg's situation and gives him a chance to express his feelings before offering him up a new lead in the case in order to assuage his anxiety. grissom, despite his fatigue at the time, then accepts sara's admonition without complaint and from that point forward (throughout the rest of the season) shows special care for greg, treating him with kindness and consideration.
smart man listens to his wife.
see also the first several episodes of s1 of the reboot, when grissom and sara disagree both about the possibility of hodges's innocence AND about whether or not they should remain in vegas or return to their boat. while they discuss these issues several times, they never escalate to real “fighting” even though they have a clear difference of opinion. instead, they both straightforwardly communicate their feelings (i.e., "you can just say it," "i'm mad at you and doubt right now," "out to sea, where we should be") and attempt to make their cases to each other using measured claims supported by evidence. though there is obvious frustration on both of their parts at various points, they keep things civil and communicative between themselves.
so why don't they fight?
as stated above, it's certainly not because they always 100% see everything eye to eye.
rather, i think it's a conscious choice on their parts.
sara grew up in a house where her parents screamed at each other and fought (both physically and verbally) all the time (see episode 05x13 "nesting dolls"), and she never wants her own marriage to be like theirs was. that so, no matter how upset she might get with grissom, she's not going to yell at him or get in his face. she's going to make the choice to talk.
along those same lines, grissom knows what sara's childhood was like—he knows about her father—and he would rather die than do anything that would ever make sara feel scared of him. he is mindful of the fact that big, loud male aggression is triggering for her, so he won't raise his voice at her* or stomp around or slam doors or do anything to make her feel small.
* while he will sometimes rant to her about other things that upset him (see, for example, their interaction by the mailboxes in episode 02x05 "scuba doobie-doo"), he never will actually yell at her if something she's said or done is what's upsetting him because he knows she wouldn't be able to feel safe around him afterward if he did.
to my mind, part of the reason why sara is attracted to grissom is because he's generally very soft-spoken; is a committed pacifist; he's not domineering; and even when he's mad at her, he doesn't yell at her.
in general, i think they both strongly believe that there's never any reason for adults who are capable of civil communication and who are committed to having a positive relationship with each other to resort to that kind of behavior anyway.
again, that's not to say they never disagree or get on each other's nerves; it's just to say that when they do, they talk about it rather than scream about it.
their conflict style is to be a bit sarcastic with each other or passive-aggressive or even to give each other the silent treatment until they’ve cooled down but never to be outright aggressive.
sara will move the gloves to where she likes them just to show grissom she's annoyed (see reboot episode 01x02 "honeymoon in vegas"), but she's not going to yell or call names or storm out. grissom will reprimand sara for being reckless (see reboot episode 01x08 "pipe cleaner"), but he won't raise his voice at her or get in her face.
that's just not how they operate.
—and especially because i don't think the stakes of their disagreements (when they do end up having them) are typically very high.
the thing is, they pretty much align in their views on all of the big stuff: their ethics and values are incredibly similar; their moral compasses point in the same direction.
again, that's not to say that there are never any issues they see differently from each other but rather that whatever issues they do disagree on probably tend to be "small potatoes" as opposed to big picture kinda stuff.
it's not like they're going to come to loggerheads over politics or religion or social issues or their ideas on what constitutes basic human decency, because down those lines, they're mostly in accord already*. rather, it's going to be more on the level of "excuse me, dear, but when you walk out of the room mid-sentence, it's irksome. could you maybe not do that to me anymore?"
* and even if they were to see things differently on the particulars, i think they share enough of a common foundation that they'd be able to have a rational discussion about these issues, where they could build based on a lot of shared assumptions. it's not like they'd be completely at odds.
probably the most fraught discussions they tend to have take place when they're both still working at the lab and they clash over cases—but by the time they're actually a couple (between s5-s7), even those kinds of disputes between them are genuinely rare, given that they've developed such a good working rapport together by that point.
to be fair, i also believe that particularly during the run of the original series, in order to avoid conflict, they sometimes let issues fall by the wayside without having any sort of real discussion about them at all even though said issues really should be discussed (see, for example, sara's frustration with grissom's behavior during episode 07x23 "the good, the bad, and the dominatrix")—so, again, it's not that they necessarily have perfect conflict management skills so much as it is that "fighting" just isn't their style.
still.
i think that, overall, conflict is rare between them, and what little conflict there is tends to be mild by nature. they love and respect each other and care about each other’s feelings too much to ever truly want to be nasty.
i mean, just listen how they talk to each other in the reboot: they are so habitually polite with each other (more so than one might even expect two people who have been married for a very long time to be), and they are constantly affirming each other and saying sweet things.
grissom, in particular, can’t go two sentences in a row without calling sara by an endearment.
all of the above so, even during the most fraught days of the divorce during s13, i just literally cannot picture them having any kind of blowouts with each other.
sad discussions, sure. somber discussions, sure. maybe even snide ones (particularly coming from sara’s side).
but not the kind of knock-down drag-outs where they’re raising their voices or saying horrible, “i’m trying to hurt you”-type things.
even on the worst of worst days between them, when they’re breaking each other’s hearts, they still both love each other, after everything.
as for who apologizes first in the instances when they do bicker, i think they’re both pretty quick to apologize; seldom do their disagreements reach the point of standoff.
anyway, while ymmv, that’s my take:
ultimately, they’re lovers, not fighters, and their communication patterns with each other reflect as much.
thanks for the question! please feel welcome to send another any time.
ive been doing a s1 rewatch and honestly im appreciating the whole show sooo much more now that im in my 20s and was like 15? when it came out. like firstly the effects and story are great, the story was super fresh at the time and fairly unique in terms of other media coming out, and the child actors are so much better than what had been being used on a lot of other shows w kid characters-like these kids were great at like 11. and not just that but looking back the release was literally the catalyst in such a change in terms of streaming and streaming services developing their OWN shows like once this dropped every studio started scrambling and it really shows looking at the media from the past few years and all the new streaming services. plus idk if its just me but the individual episode arcs in s1 also seem a lot different than traditional episode arcs in like tv shows? like the van flip scene happens within the first 10/15 mins of episode six and it strikes me as something most other shows wouldve placed as an ending scene in an episode rather than one of the openers. i have like a whole new appreciation for this show especially considering i didnt Love s3 but im excited to rewatch it and see how my opinion on it will have changed!
ahhhhh yes omg!!!! this is so fun for u i LOVE rewatching st!!!! you're right, stranger things really is exceptional for a variety of reasons, and so many little structural things (like the van flip!!) really set it apart from other television shows.
st has such a cinematic approach to the episodic format that it honestly sometimes feels disingenuous (to me at least) to describe it as a tv show. like you pointed out, st really helped pave the way for streaming service exclusives and especially big-budget streaming service exclusives. i think that so much of what made st such a milestone show is the fact that they had this cinematic approach. television is traditionally serialized, and streaming sorta... shifts that definition. like, "serialized" means that something is delivered in regular installments. st isn't! whole seasons premier at once, and those seasons aren't delivered regularly. but stranger things is built with this in mind. each season is somewhere around 8-9 hours long, yet the episodes flow into each other perfectly, the entire structure optimized for bingeing. you can watch a full season of stranger things in one day if you want to, and it Feels much like watching an extremely long film, as opposed to watching a season of television, as episodes don't typically (looking at u lost sister) have self-contained arcs or plots. this, combined with st's thematic influence (classic eighties films) means that the narrative's structure takes full advantage of the show's means of delivery!! stranger things carved out a space for media somewhere between film and television, a space that had been widening ever since, and i think that's very neat.
idk sorry i went off on a tangent but ANYWAY i love the observations you've made and i hope you enjoy the rest of your rewatch!! pls share any more thoughts you have, i'd love to hear them :)
i don't know if i've made it clear how much i hate how they write women on this show (and it's getting worse? as time goes on?? in the year of our extended plague 2021???) but i really, really do. unless they plan to address it in s6, i will be fighting roberto in pop's parking lot once the snow is gone in canada for the year (i wasn't built to fight in the snow, i'm from southern california) over all of it.
and listen, we know that evan is actually being a shit human for trying to make people believe something different from what they saw and heard. i'm...he said that varchie was hooking up (like "we said b/a was" but like, archie said it? betty said it? the characters said it!) and not really together but the characters, again, said that they broke up, right? so. i mean. it's not just that he's lying, it's that he's lying when we can literally watch the characters saying otherwise.
and yeah, having the tbk call betty and it being right after the polly thing with no real pov on her part is just amazing. who are these people? we don't know them. and betty doesn't really get much of a voice during the whole ending b/a scene. whether that's by design for plot reasons or because the writer's have decided that this season is the one where they start giving betty her worst comic traits, i don't know.
it's gross tho.
another anon below the cut:
i know people don't like to admit that jughead is flawed in ways that means he can be a bad boyfriend or friend at times but jughead throws himself into things and immerses himself, even if he's not prepared or truly committed the way he should be fairly often.
i think the first time we really saw it was with the serpents and southside high. he wanted to become the person he thought should be after (i'm sure overhearing the conversation between archie and fred in s1 didn't help) and with his dad's reputation (and his own, let's be real) transferring schools and knowing his dad's legacy could become his own. so he went all in.
do we all remember this?
Tumblr media
he always goes all in. it's not the worst trait to have (and betty shares it so she's not exempt) but the point of it is, after the time jump, we got an adult version of jughead with an actual addiction instead of his quirky teenage addictive personality that was always well intentioned if not sometimes executed badly.
we see it with his drinking, with his drug use. all in the name of writing. because that's supposed to be who he is, right? and then he was back in town and he was a teacher (a better one than the rest, that's for sure) and that was who he was. he had solutions. he knew how to get writing done, he was teaching. he was working. he was investigating. he probably really felt like he was in his element.
i love jughead's willingness to always fly a touch too close to the sun, tbh.
when jughead isn't apprehensive about something because he's decided it's who or what he should be in that moment, i'm always braced for disaster for him. that impulsivity rarely serves him well. so yeah, i think jumping into a relationship and living situation with tabitha is probably going to blow up.
whatever he's holding onto or diving headfirst into next is bound to be a sticking point for them.
Are there any s1 Santana or Brittany storyline/scenes you think would've been different or perhaps never happened in the first place had Santana and Brittany been main characters from the start? Personally I think Santana wouldn't have slept with finn. Or if she did they would have at least written that entire storyline a little differently.
Oh it would have been totally different. Them starting out as background characters initially is integral to Brittana, as a couple and as individuals. So honestly it would have to be a whole season 1/later seasons rewrite haha.
The way main cast works on Glee can be pretty inconsistent but with the kids at least and in the first three seasons, it's fairly straightforward. It's best illustrated with Mike imo. So Harry Shum was a regular in season 1 but with on an episode to episode basis and then a more "proper" cast member in season 2. Not dissimilar from the contract Naya had in the back half of season 1, I believe. This meant that he had more lines and more of a story, but he still wasn't a main character so Mike didn't really have his own plots and focus. And then in season 3 he does become a main cast member and gets a whole plot to himself with his career and family. Obviously I'm no one's agent or lawyer so I don't know what the contracts said, exactly, but from a story perspective we see through Mike how it affects what they get. How it should, anyway. Jenna was a main character for all of seasons 1-5 and Tina rarely got her own plot, but I digress into justice for Tina territory.
I'm a big supporter of taking a critical look at framing anyway, and always keeping in mind whose story is being told and who is the true focus of a given scene or storyline. Glee discussion would be less exhausting if more considered this, methinks. Now, to bring this back to Brittana, they weren't the focus for any of season 1 because they weren't main cast. Naya's season 1B contract gave her more of a role but that still meant getting to support the actual main characters. Case in point, her storyline with Finn like you mentioned. So if we were to have a season 1 where Santana and Brittany were main characters to begin with, lots would change, not the least of which is that they actually have stories focusing on them.
Tumblr media
I'm tempted to say I'm glad they started out as bg characters because, putting aside that we'll never know what ifs, I don't think their sexualities and the Brittana storyline would have happened. Certainly not in the way it ended up being. I mean really all of what I'm saying is pure speculation but I think it's a net positive that they started out as small as they did. Okay so tumblr ate the rest of what I said here, nevermind imma persevere and rewrite but uuuuugh. Anyway.
So based on everything that did end up happening when they got larger roles, including the Quinntana rivalry to be the Alpha Bitch, I think Santana would have been a further foil to Quinn, the cheerleader the writers begrudgingly redeemed. Brittana were there in the first place to be dumber/meaner and more shallow than Quinn is I think that would have been amped up. Maybe Britt would have had friendly scenes with ND like Bad Reputation, maybe she’d have been more of a henchman. Main characters should have their own stories but even before it expanded its main cast, Glee could barely handle that in season 1. So yeah, that’s a pretty pessimistic look at things, them just being more of a cheerleading mean girl stereotype and Santana especially going down a “bigger bad than Quinn” road, but that’s what I see realistically happening if Naya was a main character to begin with.
A more optimistic view and what I’d actually like to see is a Quinntana rivalry not unlike (but perhaps more pronounced) the one in season 2, yes, but also actual UHT friendship scenes. Maybe even Brittana helping Quinn through the pregnancy, just a wild idea. Them being main characters would give a reason to really see their perspective throughout all of it, not to mention the whole spy thing. Other than the UHT friendship that’s the main thing I’d want to see in this alternate season 1, them being spies actually leading somewhere or just not having the shoddy writing it did.
That’s the thing, Brittana didn’t actually have storylines in season 1, not any that were their own. Questioning whose story it is and all that. I guess we could say them starting out as spies and genuinely growing to like being in Glee Club is their story but even that is secondary to the Will and Sue conflict and Quinn’s own journey. The UHT being in the crossfire of the Schuevester war is rarely even talked about and never actually explored so that’s something that could have been done with them. I have a meta planned on this topic, if I ever learn time management and don’t have to type answers out twice for tumblr.
Just to touch on the Finn thing, that depends on so much. I think they might still have slept together but instead of it being entirely about Finn, Santana hopefully would have had more focus. Here we again fall into the trap of what would become of her sexuality storyline. Would it still happen? Even if we assume yes, she’s still a lesbian, I’m not sure more focus on her here would have done her character much good. It just so happens that I think everything Santana had story-wise before becoming a major character, everything in this regard anyway, was an insanely lucky coincidence and retroactively made her sexuality storyline even better. Wish I could link to Santana Lopez in the early seasons: a case study in compulsory heterosexuality, Part I here but alas, time management. Someone please force me to write that.
Bottom line is, I think so, so much would have been different. Overall I don’t think it would have been better, not of the writers just looked at the two as generic cheerleaders like they very much did in season 1. Like I say their rise form background to having their own story is key to Brittana in a way that I think taking that journey away would alter them too much as characters. Even if the writers planned with them falling in love, with the main beats in later seasons we ended up getting, I wouldn’t trust the writers to know what to do with them in season 1. As much as the lack of these two in season 1 pulls it down on my Glee seasons ranking, it was probs better this way so they could bloom later.
This is very interesting to think about because Brittana’s story is very unique to the way it developed organically and pretty much accidentally, so I genuinely believe that the writers wouldn’t have planned anything better than we actually got. I do sometimes wish they were mains to begin with but it’s a ripple effect that I don’t think would have been worth it. Fun to think about though! I haven’t explained every thought here, maybe we could do a part two with an actual rewrite.
Season 14 and the Green Ninja
me? thinking about ninjago? it's more likely than you think.
Season 14 of Ninjago, Seabound, introduced the concept of the elements of Water and Wind not belonging to the First Spinjitzu Master(FSM), and instead to the storm serpent Wojira. While they could still be passed from parent to child, as seen with Maya and Nya, they were of different origins than the other elemental powers. (The Wind Dragon does exist in the First Realm and that's still weird. Maybe it's just super rare for dragons? Play off of Jay using wind back in S1 and say the Wind Dragon was a mutated Lightning Dragon like Stormbringer since they look similar??)
And we know there are four primary elemental powers (The "Elements of Creation"), being the ones held by the main ninja: Fire, Lightning, Earth, and Ice. There were obviously many more beyond those, ranging from power copying to controlling time itself, but those four were the base "blocks" for building Ninjago. It makes sense for Wu to recruit the Elements of Creation, as Creation would fight Destruction.
And really, it's been a bit odd since the start that it was Ice, instead of, say, Water. Water is essential for life as we know it, yet FSM used Ice to create the world. The meta explanation is probably Avatar: The Last Airbender, since that ended in 2008 and the first sketch of what would become Ninjago was done in 2009. Even with the pilots airing in 2011, ATLA would still be pretty fresh in the mind so keeping it to Ice makes sense.
But there wasn't an in-universe explanation. Just that "Ice was one of the four elements used to create Ninjago".
Until now, obviously. Because FSM never had Water. It was not his to control.
Circling back a bit, there's the Green Ninja prophecy. "One ninja will rise above the others and become the Green Ninja, the ninja destined to defeat the Dark Lord." Classic stuff. Kinda funny to look back on once you realize the ninja have distinct eyebrows and notice the dream version of the Green Ninja has Lloyd's eyebrows.
The only characters we ever see actively tested for Green Ninja Properties are Morro, Nya, and Lloyd. Nya's happens offscreen, but we know it happened. While Wu claims he thought one of the main four was destined to be the Green Ninja (and was surprised when Lloyd did have the power), I... kinda doubt it. At least in the context of the rest of the series.
The ninja were in fairly close quarters with their weapons, so if any of them were destined to become the green ninja, Wu would've been able to tell. They would have shone with wispy, green energy, even if they wouldn't float while being held. The last shot of the pilot is the team high-fiving with the weapons. If any of the four were going to be the Green Ninja, they would've likely started to glow right there and then. Wu claims in episode 10 "When the four weapons are laid out before the destined one, the weapons will react, revealing the identity of the Green Ninja", which could indicate holding them close wouldn't reveal anything.
However, the weapons aren't "laid out" before Lloyd, and are instead held up nearby until they begin floating. At least, they aren't laid out in the same way Wu lays them before Morro and Nya. This seems to indicate simply holding the weapons close to the Green Ninja will reveal their identity, though it's not entirely clear.
The prophecy also contains no specifications on how they'll rise above, or what powers they will have. While there is a later addition to the prophecy from Misako("For once the Green Ninja finds the instrument of peace, he will strike it and know the power of the Ultimate Spinjitzu Master"), there is still no statement on what the initial powers might be. Thinking back on it now, it makes sense that it wouldn't be one of the main four. Their elements were part of the same "group", being the Elements of Creation. You need all four combined to perform the Tornado of Creation. Together, they could face Destruction. Beyond that, they were elements FSM had.
After all, why would the Green Ninja wield one of the Elements of Creation, and not one of the elements FSM never had? The Dark Lord would be more likely to expect an element the man had, not one he could never wield.
Which is why Wu may have thought Morro was destined to be the Green Ninja. Though he had no other ninja for Morro to surpass, his powers were not from FSM. The same explanation applies for why he would test Nya, and not the other ninja. Knowing her mother's power (as of later seasons) was Water, the other element not belonging to his father, it made sense to see if she would take on the legacy. Nya's fighting was different as well, as she wished to prove to be just as strong without elemental powers. Which she does, through the use of her Samurai X mech, rising above the ninja and "defeating" them.
But neither of them were destined for the title. The powers inherited from Wojira, in one way or another, were not the key to destroy the Dark Lord.
It was the one who inherited the remaining essence of FSM in the form of Energy and the associated Golden Power who was destined to overcome the Dark Lord. Ultimately, the power used to help create Ninjago would take on forces hellbent on destroying it.
#ninjago#ninjago theory#morro ninjago#nya ninjago#lloyd garmadon#am i overthinking this? absolutely#advantage of ninjago being long: lots of cool lore intricacies and connections to the past#disadvantage of ninjago being long: new lore keeps coming and changing context/known information#earlier seasons get moments that are more interesting or logical (sometimes) or confusing with current context#ex: wind and water were introduced in the same season and it turns out they're connected much later on#but then there's the wind dragon in the First Realm#or Lou disapproving Cole becoming a ninja instead of a dancer but it turns out that might be bc of Lilly#which only gets weird with the S8 flashback compared to Cole's pilot explanation#(personal explanation: he lied to the others about testing himself because he didn't want to think about the real reason)#it's still weird that Misako said she knew Lloyd would be the green ninja back in 'The Stone Army'#like. how. was it the scroll with the 'strike the bell and become the ultimate spinjitzu master' which is only something fsm had#and she thought because lloyd was descended from the guy and wu and garmadon didn't have the power that lloyd would???#also how DID wind and water make it to humans. was someone blessed with the amulet? did nyad die and her power found a suitable candidate?#was morro actually the descendant of a master of wind or did wind look at this kid and go 'surprise power time'?#i have several questions and probably won't ever get answers#unless morro shows up in s15 if they reveal the new master of wind#cause he could've escaped the departed realm during Kaiju Protocol while Wu and Pix weren't looking#hypothetically anyway#long post
♡ Final Space Quinn x Gary ♡
♡♡ Quinn x Gary’s Journey Links & Commentary ♡♡
This is a long ass post. I believe that it may be the most comprehensive Quinnary post on the site.
I combed through Final Space in order to chronicle this relationship. The most detailed portions might have taken place during a manic phase. The less detailed parts were probably done during a fairly normal (for me) state of mind. I didn’t work on it during any bouts with depression, despite having a few during the course of this project. For the most part, this oughtta all be accurate.
FOR THE HOMIES @space-finally Happy Super Belated Birthday! @shslargue @andromidagalaxie @daintyurbanprincess @sleepyfangirl18 @simplyender
One note: Some of these links are clips on YouTube, some are gifsets created on Tumblr (most of which come from @chookity-dookity and @jlassijlali), and some are to other miscellaneous posts. I didn’t think about notating which are which until I was pretty far into the record, so clicking each link will be different formats of the scenes. Most are either gifsets or clips. If I can’t find one, there is just me blabbing.
♡♡♡ SEASON 1 ♡♡♡
Boy Meets Girl: This initial meeting is super weird out of context. Gary seems like a complete and utter creep and nobody in their right mind would have been interested in this man if this was how he approached them. Of course, since then, we’ve learned that Gary has limited people skills from having only one decent parent who died when he was young, and also abandonment issues from having an indecent parent. He’s fortunately learned better since then.
I Don’t Want to Wake Up: This scene is one of the main reasons that Cookie Wife really didn’t make any goddamn sense in S2, but anyways, Gary really said that he didn’t mind not waking up if it meant him being with Quinn again, and this is before she’s ever trapped in Final Space or anything. Gary simply had her in his psyche as his greatest desire and she’s just there, missing him and wanting to be with him.
The Reunion
I.G. Takeover Command:
Tumblr media
Quinn: For some reason, they’re trying to shut down my investigation.
Gary: What a bunch of nerds.
Quinn: They’re after me.
Gary: You, why? You’re perfect.
Quinn: (Tells them what the problem is and everything bad that transpired after that)
Gary:... (Tries to fucking flirt with her)
The Fighting/Flirting Scene of YIKES!: Soooooooooo... I can’t seem to find a clip of this or a gifset, but it was that part where the ship is being taken over by the Infinity Guard, the Sames are turning on the crew, and Quinn is literally punching Gary in the face while he insists that they’re flirting. What can you do besides like... be turned completely off. That was terrible. Thank goodness he’s grown.
Tumblr media
Arguing over who saves the day... SHE knows exactly what needs to be done, but Gary is trying to prove himself and OMG. Like... I don’t understand how people didn’t understand Quinn’s frustrations with this man in S1. Lol.
“Alright. We wait for Gary.” I NEED y’all to understand the compromise that was made here. Quinn wants to leave Gary behind. Quinn explains WHY leaving Gary behind is the best thing to do for billions of lives. The rest of these fools talmbout they not leaving without Gary, and so she agreed... I INSIST that y’all acknowledge that Quinn has literally become an enemy of an intergalactic superpower to carry out this mission, standing up to not only her superiors, but all of the reinforcements that they’ve sent after her... but instead of fighting them on it (and we know that she doesn’t mind doing so, even when outnumbered and outgunned)... She AGREES. She states her case the one time, they say “No,” and she doesn’t push it. That’s actually a huge show of compromise for her. Would she have gotten her way if she pushed back? Probably not. But she wasn’t above pushback and she still chose not to in this situation.
Girl Remembers Boy: This man literally gets his finger snapped for not respecting boundaries.   Was it WORTH IT GARY?
Painfully Short & Clear I actually LOVE this spot in their development because of a couple of things that happened here. 1. He asked her why she wouldn’t give him a chance. 2. She answered, very clearly and reasonably. 3. He “broke up with her,” but more than that - his FOCUS when interacting with her became the root issue that she named “That doesn’t inspire a lot of trust.” After this moment, Gary repeatedly focuses on getting Quinn to trust him (and not so much asking her out or asking for another chance), but WORKING ON himself, in a way that he has been clearly told what problem she has.
Corruption Stew - So, okay... I like this little tidbit too, because it shows that Quinn, for all her genius and all her common sense, her faith in the Infinity Guard is so well constructed that she doesn’t even CONSIDER that they’re corrupt. But Gary, for all his bumbling and borderline inefficiency in a plethora of things... Can see it for what it is, and is outspoken.
She Don’t Trust You Knuckas.
Quinn Tries to Send Gary Away.
(This is Gary and Quinn’s first adventure together! )
Gotta go around...
Quinn confronts the Infinity Guard about the Lord Commander (Okay... I can’t tell if the clip is messed up or my computer is having issues, so... I mean... sorry if it’s janked up.) Her Face
Gary Begs Quinn Not to Join the Infinity Guard
Destroying the Laser
The Trust Save
“Healthy People Trust”
Chapter 6 is one of my favorite episodes of this show. So many things take place, but for me, personally, I care the most about the development/revelations of Quinn and Gary in it.
Quinn VS Avocato:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sidenote: As much as fandom pits Avocato and Quinn against each other, I certainly hardly ever see the two clips in the show where they had their big disagreements.
It just feels like such a crucial piece of lore.
Like... this is so close after the whole, "Healthy people trust," and Quinn's first response to this disagreement (which is a huge and world threatening disagreement), is to pull a gun, then they're basically in a life threatening situation and her takeaway ultimately was, "I can't believe I trusted you." It made me laugh a little bit the first time, because I was like... "Dawg... you pulled a gun," but also like... it IS a situation worth pulling a gun over.
And Idk if I would ever trust somebody again after that, but definitely after tying me to a chair. Lol. A MESS. Gary was right when he said there was really no good rebound after that... but he was also wrong, because there actually was and it took place in this episode.
TRANSMISSION BINGE WITH MOONCAKE!!!:  Where I credit the origin of Quinn starting to fall for Gary. I love that you can tell that she’s changing her mind about him, even though she doesn’t SUDDENLY become into him or immediately loses her common damn sense over him, or anything like that.
  “You can trust Gary.” - HUE
  “That idiot” (affectionate) and the Incoming Transmission.
Quinn: H.U.E. Where’s Gary?
H.U.E.: Unclear. I have lost communications with him.
Quinn: Then, we’d better get down there and find him. We’re coming Gary.
(She doesn’t say that they’re going to go get “them” or name Avocato and his son. She specifically states that she’s looking for Gary and declares to Gary that she’s coming for him). Whenever she resumes communication with him, he says, ‘Oh Quinn, you really do love me,” and though she’s concerned about him, saving him and warming up to him, she quickly corrects that - even though the connection wasn’t great. Lol. Which is another reason that I hate whenever people suggest that Quinn just became a Gary prop when she “suddenly” caught feelings for him - because her feelings started developing as early as Chapter 6 (her feelings of trust, or at least trying to in the previous episode). IT DIDN’T JUST SUDDENLY HAPPEN WHEN THE WORLD WAS FALLING APART YOU HEFFAS.
Rescues Gary and the first exchange of warm smiles... you know... before Avocato ruined the moment by getting blown up!
J/K... But he did really get his ass blown up shortly after. Seconds 30-about 1.00 tho? - Quinn being super happy to see Gary alive. Her focus is solely on him as he and the others board, and she watches him, smiling (one of her BRIGHTEST SMILES THUS FAR, MIND YOU), and after he greets Mooncake, he looks up at her and they just... smile at each other...
She isn’t mad at him anymore. She hasn’t left the ship to go on her mission alone. And, she is happy to see him alive (after she saved him). I’m reiterating this because a lot of folk try to act like Quinn only beat and bullied Gary up until the moment that they went on a date, and while those stupid people are probably not here, at this PRO-QUINN post in this QUINN LOVING environment, I really love punctuating that Quinn showed emotional acceptance of Gary AS EARLY AS this event.
It wasn’t because he lost his best friend. It wasn’t because she was stuck with him. She could have left. She chose to watch his transmissions, chose to save HIM, specifically, chose to stay and obviously was pleased with that decision after he made it back safely.
She was soft with him when we next saw them together in 7...
(Image: Quinn comforting Gary when Little Cato shuts him out) Gary’s Message to Avocato
Quinn sends Gary to talk to Little Cato. She doesn’t always have the emotional maturity it takes to ease the problems, but I love the fact that one of the aspects of Quinn’s personality is that she tries to get the best person to comfort others that she can find. (As she later does this when Gary is anguished over Fox’s death and she knows that he “needs” Avocato, instead of her. And to a certain degree, also Nightfall, who encourages Gary to step things up with Little Cato).
Sidenote - I think its interesting that in this instance, when she looks around the room and there’s Mooncake, KVN and some Sames, SHE is the one to approach Gary and comfort him. I love the thought of her assessing the situation and knowing that this is the time when she IS the best person to do this, and that she’s willing to (because she cares). And it makes me wonder if she hadn’t already tried to be there for Little Cato too, because she was right behind him whenever he went through the vent and I believe that she’s been keeping an eye on him.
The Good Stuff: “H.U.E. What is he doing?” PLEASE NOTE how Quinn only EVER asks about Gary, specifically. You might say, that’s because he’s the only other human there, but she does this a lot, whether or not he is. She ONLY ever asks specifically about Gary when he’s involved in group shenanigans or danger. Quinn calls for Gary when they hear explosions from the ship. “What was that? Gary are you okay? Gary?!”
Nightfall rescues them and reveals herself to Gary right as Quinn comes in to check on things. Quinn and Gary argue... well... Quinn fusses at Gary for doing some very ridiculous and immature shit. Though, between us, I think that Nightfall’s presence and Gary’s acknowledgment of her as Quinn was a sore sport that caused her to bounce back into her abrasiveness as a defense mechanism. Gary is being quite nonchalant, despite having just gone on a suicide mission with a young boy, in which, someone else had to rush in and save them and the kid wound up injured.
Quinn seemed more hurt than angry, to me. She’s avoiding even looking at Gary as she lashes out at him, and when he suggests that he leaves, this is one of the few times that she agrees with him in this season. She’s not agreeing with his ass. She’s upset and doesn’t want to see him right now, and her tone is totally different than it was whenever she first entered the room, saying his name. Quinn didn’t show up to fuss at Gary. She showed up to check on things and Gary was goofing around with some flirtatious chick who had not only just saved him but was acting all cozy with him. She was probably actually upset with what had just happened, but you can’t convince me that she didn’t have jealous rage prompting some of her anger in this moment. To the point where she’s about to let Gary leave and sign on for raising Little Cato while she’s on this mission. “Quinn, Gary can’t leave.” - Nightfall
When Gary leaves the mission...
Quinn VS Nightfall.: Nightfall binds Gary, is caught and confronted by Quinn about what she’s up to, tells Quinn Gary’s typical fate in every timeline, and tries to kill Mooncake.
Quinn Needs Gary/Team: “Gary Rescues Little Cato” I would like to point out, as some like to forget A LOT of the time, that Little Cato meets Gary and Quinn on the same day. Gary signs on to take care of him, because he’s Avocato’s best friend and Avocato asked it of him, but Quinn is there, instructing Gary on a few parenting things, being EXTREMELY upset with him when Little Cato gets hurt in the process AND, was about to let Gary LEAVE Little Cato with her, since in her words of anger, he had allowed this to happen to Little Cato. And Little Cato heard their conversation (because as soon as they left he got up to use Nightfall’s time traveling ship), so he also knew that Gary was getting prepared to leave him there with Quinn and he accepted it.
In this scene, Little Cato clearly cares about her, too, and we know he was fond of Nightfall, and had her around for 60 years. So, listen... Long story short - Little Cato loves Quinn and sees her as a mom figure. She never actually officially signs on for that in adoption, so he doesn’t ever call her mom or anything like that. But, realistically - that’s his mom-head, and his parental ties to her are very much so real, despite her not being a formal mother to him on paper.
This Entire Episode, Really...
Gary having his ability crisis with Nightfall/Quinn
“We are not flying into a sun!”: Okay, okay, okay... I think about this a lot, because it highlights my thought process that Nightfall and Quinn were never the same Quinn. She’s an older Quinn, yeah - but not THIS Quinn as an older person. But... the way that Gary is talking to Sis in this episode... He don’t be talking to Quinn like that. Even in this episode, where he is highly distressed the entire time and full of anxiety, the snippiest he gets with her is sarcastically thanking him for not believing in him.
Fly Into the Sun: I love this scene because Quinn shows that even though (we know, as I pointed out in earlier moments, that she has feelings for Gary at this point), Quinn doesn’t suddenly become some passive prop that is just there to go along with Gary’s shenanigans. She tells him the truth - he’s not a good pilot, but she also gives him a chance to prove himself - please do not screw this up. Earlier Quinn would have fought Gary until he got out of the seat!
Bolo’s Mind Palace: Nightfall wishes him good luck. She’s always really cheerful and nice to Gary, despite him not really returning it and I have to wonder if some of Gary’s learning to pipe down a little with the over the top clinginess to Quinn wasn’t aided by seeing how uncomfortable it was for him whenever Nightfall seemed into him.
Quinn asks, “What’s going on with Gary?” which winds up being how they’re allowed to see the interaction between Gary and his father.
The Talk with John: Quinn’s facial expressions whenever Gary is talking about her goes from being pleased that he said he loves her “to the max core,” to being saddened when he says that he doesn’t think that she likes him.
Gary Loses His Dad (Again) ☹: You can see the pain on her face when she has to see this happen to Gary.
Tumblr media
They KNOW it's about to happen. Even if they didn't know before today, they knew from watching it unfold. Their reactions aren't reactions of shock and horror so much as hating to see Gary go through this tragedy. Because they care about him. She clutches her pearls and says, "No." This isn't the first death she's seen, in her career nor in the time we've seen her on the show. This hits different. This hurts her. She hates seeing this happen.
Whenever she consoles him with Little Cato, she chooses similar wording to the very thing that the person he loved most had just said to him.
Gary and Quinn are on the same page 😊 I presume this because Nightfall goes away. I think that she realized that Quinn was finally where she and Gary were in tuned enough that she didn’t need to stick around.
After John’s transmission and Quinn’s speech (I can’t find a clip or gifset), Gary tries to ask Quinn “something” during battle. (It’s to go on a date) 🥺🥺🥺
He’s persistent about it, but not in that way that he used to pester her. Instead, this is more like... He chose a bad time, but then again, they might not have had time in the future. So, persistence is endearing here, in my opinion. PLUS, he wasn’t so distracted that he couldn’t still save her from danger. (Gary saves Quinn during discussion)
KVN’s save & “Gary, give him a little something”
Quinn agrees to go on a date with Gary. Worth noting: Yes, they think that they’re about to die. That’s actually what makes this even more meaningful to me. Before she dies, Quinn wants to know why Gary even likes her, and whenever he answers, he includes his definition of love. Quinn, in what she believes are her last moments is ready to agree to go on a date with Gary. She knows that they can’t go on a date. They’re about to die. What she’s really agreeing to in this moment is to be willing to take a chance on Gary. She could have said that there is no love here or too bad it’s too late, or something. But, she tells him yes, for once, to one of his inquiries about them, after he speaks about love and before what they think is their certain death.
The fact that they live wasn’t something they expected. I’ve already said that I think that she had her feelings long before this, but several things happen this episode in which those feelings are brought out of her, into the light, into Gary’s awareness and into the rest of their relationship. I think this was the moment that their path together truly started. When she finally said “Yes” to him.
Gary & Quinn’s “First Date” I really appreciate that even though everything is about to go to hell, they still get this moment in the place where they first met.
Honestly, this was simply funny to me. Y’all tryna save the world and Gary is tryna “bring it.” And Quinn looks like she’s into it. 😉
First Hand Hold 💘💘💘
Quinn becomes playful with Gary and allows him to flirt with her. She ALSO seems to want to say more to him. Whenever they’re underwater, she seems like she is going to say something else, but decides on, “This is actually a pretty good first date...” immediately after which, she rescues Gary from getting harmed and takes the blow herself, which knocks her unconscious.
Tumblr media
* It is very important for me to point out the fact that Quinn rescues Gary here, placing herself in danger in order to save him, because I never see this scene anywhere outside of watching the show and I hardly ever see it discussed, either. The narrative that Quinn doesn’t care about Gary or that he’s always saving her, or that their relationship is one sided now has another example against it. For reference, I can tell you that it happens in episode 9, at the 14:30 timestamp, but I couldn’t find a clip and I can’t remember if there’s a gifset that I ever saw for it. My friend made this for me specifically for this post.*
The World is Falling Apart... Now... I’m also gonna simply challenge the idea that Quinn suddenly became a totally different person in this episode and suddenly was interested in Gary without reservations... That shit ain’t happen. Quinn very much still had some reservations about Gary and their relationship, despite having already began feeling deeply for him, she still doesn’t bend to every whim he has. (Hard maybe) They once again think they’re about to die and while Gary does ask her to be in a relationship and she doesn’t say no, there’s not a huge proclamation of love or a big kiss or anything like the descriptors that people have claimed here. All they do in what they think are their last moments is hold each other.
Mooncake. “He stays with us” 🥺 Gary and Quinn are next to each other, ready to go to war together. GOD I LOVE THEM!
SEASON 1 FINALE:
This episode is very important, because not only is it the last time that we see Quinn for a really long time, but it is the place where Quinn makes some hard decisions that I believe that she was contemplating before they got to this point. She always intended to be a hero. She always intended to save the world... She never intended to fall for Gary. But, that happens and now she has this journey. This journey with Gary, that she can tell is coming to an end.
When Gary gives his speech and he says that they’re “family,” Quinn nods her head and when he says, “We find each other,” she smiles.
A death sentence. The plan with the hawk. “Make us proud.” She puts some faith in Little Cato.
“Why are you fighting me?” Gary has actually been following Quinn’s lead for a little bit, swooping in to save her when necessary, but listening to her plans and leading whenever he sees fit. He hadn’t straight up went against something she set out to do, and hadn’t even argued with her in a while. And here... there is SO much going on. Nobody says “I love you,” even though the conversation makes it clear. His struggle to both support her but also to save her. Her insistence to carry out this mission because she knows its her life work, but still knowing that most likely she won’t make it out of this. His vow to make sure that he helps her. And that kiss...
The kiss was like... Let’s just revisit it in the way that I have so many times.
Tumblr media
She MIGHT have known that this was goodbye. We can only presume. Look at her sad look afterwards. She told Gary “Don’t die on me,” but whenever he tells her that he wants more when she gets back, she doesn’t say anything about coming back. She knows, scientifically, what she’s up against because of her equations and this, for real, for real, this time... for her... this is likely goodbye. She doesn’t know of any possible way that this ends up in some type of rescue for her. “It’s both of us. Always has been...”
Losing Earth/Quinn’s Sacrifice Whenever she contacts him, her voice is so soft. Gary has just literally watched the Earth be taken. She has just watched the mission fail... She KNOWS what has happened in the past lives. She is already apologetic. She is apologizing to Gary. He expected her to come back. She knew better all along, and now she’s run out of time. Gary is more upset by her decision than what just happened to the Earth. It’s one of the most heartbreaking goodbyes...
“Which Way is Quinn?”: Gary sets us up for the ENTIRE MOOD of the next season with this line of questioning that he has. His body is ready to die, but he has this energy inside of him - call it thought processing, call it a soul, whatever - but Gary is determined not to die, because he has things worth living for, searching for, fighting for. His family. Which way is Little Cato? His son. Which way is Mooncake? His beloved... companion? I don’t like to think of Mooncake as a pet, but we know that technically he holds Avocato as his “best friend” so I can’t really call him that. Which way is Quinn? His soul mate... and with that... he comes back to and spends the rest of his time reuniting with them.
THIS WENT ON FOR SO LONG that I’ve decided to give it in parts. Seasons 2 and 3 will be separate from this post. After I’ve posted them, I will come back to include the link(s) to them here.
Thank you for your time! I intended to have this posted for a friend’s birthday, but halted work on it for the months that I was without a laptop. Final Space is over, but Quinn and Gary are forever for me.
yo should i watch star trek? i've been thinking about watching it but there are so many shows and movies and it's verrry overwhelming.
star trek and ncis have both been in my list of shows to watch for a long time, but i never got around to actually watching them. watching u post about them makes me wanna binge watch them but it's SO overwhelming and idk where to start
Okay, first off, you should ABSOLUTELY watch Star Trek. It's GLORIOUS and absolutely bonkers and thoughtful at the same time. You should also definitely watch NCIS because for a show about murder, it is surprisingly comforting 😂
This post got VERY VERY long because I learned I have a LOT of thoughts about how to watch large amounts of television. Uh, sorry 😂I split it up into NCIS and Star Trek, and then....the Star Trek section is still really long. I hope it's not too much rambling, and that it is possibly helpful?? I feel really honored you asked me about this <3
NCIS
NCIS is pretty simple to binge - I just finished watching it for the first time. Pretty much, I'd run straight through NCIS (the original, not NCIS:LA or NCIS:NO) from season 1-13. A few caveats: I enjoyed s1-s2, but I have some friends who were bothered by a few episodes that were transphobic. I mean it's kind of expected, since the show started in 2003 and some of the characters weren't written as the most accepting people, at least at the start But that doesn't make it easier to watch. If you think that will bother you, I'd be happy to give you a list of episodes to watch/skip. :)
From season 3 onward, I'd really just watch in order (you can skip some of the more gruesome ones *glares at two specific season 3 episodes*). I wandered off sometime around season 13/14 but you can conceivably continue on to season 18 which just finished like a week ago, I think?
Oh, and then you can try the spin-offs. Neither have really been able to hold my attention but you might have better luck!
Star Trek
Okay this one is a lot less simple. Yes, there is SO much Star Trek and asking yourself to binge all of it is very very confusing because....this timeline is a good explanation.
Tumblr media
Yeah.
Sir, what?
So! There's no right way to binge Trek. I'd definitely start with a TV show. Yes, there are a lot of Star Trek movies and some of them are fabulous, but Star Trek was born on TV and the TV shows are still the bread and butter of the franchise.
There are maybe five good entry points for Star Trek. If you don't like the first one you try, try a different one, since they are similar but every entry in the franchise has a very different feel.
I'd say there are maybe five good entry points for Star Trek:
Star Trek: The Original Series (1966-1969) The classic, very first Star Trek. Kirk, Spock, McCoy. Absolutely ICONIC. Has a few fabulous, classic high-concept sci-fi episodes and a few absolutely HILARIOUS episodes. If you choose this one, be prepared for a show that's VERY 60s in color and style, thinly-veiled Vietnam War allegories, and a lot of William Shatner.
Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987-1994) My personal favorite. Episodic, absolutely brilliant acting, and the RANGE! Literally has a cross-dressing Wild West romp one week and a deep, "machines develop a sense of self-preservation" plot the next. Some of the very best television ever made. The only problem with TNG is it starts reallllly slow. Most people don't really enjoy season 1, and it really doesn't get good until halfway thru season 2. So I'd recommend watching the pilot, then maybe skipping through a few s1 episodes as they strike your fancy. There are a few good ones but also many duds. The nice thing is it's entirely episodic so you can skip without worrying about losing the main thread of the story. After the pilot, I think the only season 1 episode that's crucial for plotty reasons is Skin of Evil (1x23)? Then starting with A Measure of a Man (2x09) I'd watch straight through. The rest of the series is EXCELLENT and quality is, on average, fairly high. (Okay, you can skip the last episode of s2 since it's a clip show. A writer's strike happened. XD) If you choose this route, be prepared for the slow start. And the VERY 80s sci-fi costumes. :)
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (1993-1999) I'm not a huge DS9 fan, but I really, really enjoy their comedic episodes. If season-long arcs and a more gritty, politick-y feel strikes your fancy, this is the show for you. Again, this one has brilliant acting (most Trek does tbh) and a LOT of range. DS9 is set during wartime, so it's definitely got a different feel. I like it but don't love it, but this show has changed the lives of a lot of people, I think, so it's definitely a good option. I think DS9 starts better than TNG, and this is definitely one you want to watch in order. Seasons 1-3 are a little more episodic and then the series-long war arc begins in earnest.
Star Trek: Voyager (1995-2001) I have an outsized love for Voyager entirely because of fandom. (J/C fandom has a very large overlap with Sam/Jack fandom!) The premise of Voyager is that it's a ragtag crew (half military officers, half rebel terrorists) trying to get home after being flung 70,000 light years from Earth (which will take roughly 70 years for them to traverse). This is the only show with a female captain and it is TERRIFIC. I'm just saying, if you watch this one, be prepared to ship the captain and the first officer. Because...you will. :) Overall quality of Voyager is, IMHO, not quite as high as TNG. It's again more episodic with some occasional multi-episode plot threads. But the two shows have equally strong captains, and Voyager is definitely a more scrappy ship than TNG's Enterprise. The characters change a LOT over seven seasons, so definitely watch Voyager in order. I think this show actually has one of the better pilot episodes of Star Trek, in a franchise full of notoriously poor pilot episodes.
Star Trek: Discovery (2017-) If you want a "modern" show - y'know, fancy effects and such - I'd roll with Discovery. But it's definitely a controversial entry in the franchise, and one of the less consistent ones, IMHO. But I really like the pilot, and also enjoyed season 2, so you could definitely start here if you're looking for something that's more recent and less, y'know, of whatever era it was made.
For people who love SG-1, I'd probably start with TNG or Voyager? I'm not sure. Discovery is a lot flashier but I think you'll probably enjoy the other four more, if you like SG-1. Totally a matter of personal taste, though.
I hope you got to the end of this, and honestly, if you want to get into either of these shows and are still confused, just message me? I will happily give advice :)
TL;DR
Just binge NCIS from episode 1 onward. If you are very sensitive to transphobia, message me and I'll tell you which season 1 eps to skip.
For Trek: If you love SG-1, I'd start with The Next Generation or Voyager. But honestly, you could start with The Original Series, The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager, or Discovery, depending on what you like in your TV.
