I'll try and make this short, so it's not a page long. the entirety of what Nana's (Kawaii~Chan) character is based on is one giant stereotype of japanese culture, her talking in a third person, having a high-pitched cutesy voice, the whole "shipping" thing, having a maid cafe etc. katelyn and a bit of nicole being abusers and it played as a joke, and travis and dante being creeps towards women in mystreet (mys). aarons entire character being there just so she can push her kinks on him (she's confirmed she has a thing about werewolves). jason getting jealous of literal kids shipping his wifes character with someone who isn't him (ein), so he made the incest plotline and then had to retcon it because it's weird. laurance's whole character getting dropped because jess ghosted Sebastian (laurs va) and allegedly mistreated a bunch of others. aaron and aphs age gap (aph being a freshman/14 and aaron being a senior/18) which was based off jessons REAL LIFE RELATIONSHIP AND HOW THEY MET, (🚩) jess butchering garroth and laurances characters (making them wankers) in diaries to try and fit in aarmau last second (someone pointed out this isnt problematic, theyre right this is her just being a dick). gene being weirdly obsessed with aph when she was 14 (i think he later admitted he liked her), and he was a senior. im sure theres more but thats all i can think of

like. okay. sonia’s a great example. off the top of your head what are her hobbies? probably learning about and researching true crime and the occult, and watching j-dramas/anime, right? but if you really think about it, her fascination with japanese culture very much feels like her just desperately wanting to fit in and massively overcompensating. so while i do think she probably enjoys those shows, theyre definitely not as popular in her kingdom as she claims (not that im saying she’s lying on purpose, just that. well, when you feel embarrassed about someones reaction to you liking something, sometimes you’ll try to make an excuse for why you do yknow), and plus, its not like they have access to a lot of entertainment media for a while post program. as for the occult/true crime stuff…

its not much better for the others, either. akanes hobbies were basically working out, doing parkour, eating, and sleeping. the first two are downright impossible for the first several months after waking up, and for the foreseeable future any kind of physical activity is going to be, to an extent, difficult just due to how much chronic pain and weakness she’ll probably suffer the rest of her life. she can get to a healthier weight and a stronger muscular build, but its not going to change the fact that she gets out of breath and sore much faster than before. as for eating… well. thats gonna be a sore subject for a while. so all she has left is sleeping, and sleeping all day is, as ive been told by many people, kind of a depression symptom? and theres no way the others would sit back and let her do that.

kazuichi, from what we can tell, had a few more normal hobbies. in game you can find him gaming with chiaki, and he seems to enjoy coming up with schemes and plans for silly stuff, but overall he just loves his tinkering. he may be the ultimate mechanic but first and foremost he just loves fucking with machines and engines and finding out what makes them tick. but even that isnt gonna work anymore. sure, he could game. if they had any fucking consoles. or a working computer network. or any games. but none of that is happening for a while, if ever. as for his tinkering, it’s gotta be a similarly sore subject to sonia’s training and tutoring as a princess. its too closely linked to what he did as a despair, too closely linked to his talent, to not make him feel like screaming when he smells machine polish. i think he definitely could get back to a point where it genuinely brings him joy again, and before that he definitely forces himself to use his talent and knowledge because they need it, but. its a complicated problem.

he probably had hobbies before the Horrors. right? he probably played some video games, maybe liked martial arts films, maybe sketched in the margins of his notebooks. rode his bike sometimes. but now? nothing keeps his interest that long. everything becomes monotonous after a while, and sure, sometimes thats the draw. with stuff like fiber crafts the point is sometimes making it muscle memory so you have something to do with your hands. but other times its not. and his ability to basically excel in most things you put in front of him has to be so fucking boring after a while. a lot of the point of having hobbies is that you arent perfect. the draw is learning, is getting better. even reading can become nothing when any nonfiction book has knowledge in it you already know and any fiction book you can intuit the ending from the first few pages. he probably reads Lightning Fast now too, so it cant hold his interest for long.

he probably has to constantly be switching hobbies and outlets. cant stay on one thing too long, or the ennui starts to set in. that sounds miserable.

Does the game ever mentions their nationality or country of birth?

I've seen some fanarts and headcanons depicting the friend group with being either from a different country they were born or Nationality, an example being headcanons I saw depicting Sunny and Mari as Japanese-Americans, Kel and Hero Mexicans, Aubrey as either German or Korean, and Basil either Swedish or British.

Is there a piece of information I'm missing from some random side quest in the game that mentions their country of birth or nationality?

nope. theres fucking one piece of evidence per family that might point to Sunny and Kel's nationalities maybe? but otherwise no ethnicity is ever directly stated ingame.

for Sunny and Mari, its the bonsai tree in their parents room that their dad had when he wasnt being a fucking deadbeat that you can find during the memory house section near the end of the sunny route.

and that, combines with sunny mari and their dads physical appearances (they all have straight black hair, theyre all pale as fuck [though even the mom is pale as fuck in the family portrait but whatever]), their family dynamic kinda matching the cultural stereotype of asian-american parents being strict and obsessed with academic success (this one sucks but ive seen it thrown out as a reason they think so by people before), and the fact that maris ghost kinda looks like an onryō leads people to think theyre japanese-american.

for Kel and Hero, its this picture alter at the top of the stairs to their house, which google tells me might be a Dia de Los Muertos ofrenda, since thats the only thing that comes up (though this system is white as hell so i defer to any hispanic people who might see this post to tell us what else it could be. either way its not stated ingame what it is.)

and with kel having darker skin then basically everyone else in the game (though the family portrait shows them all having kind of brown tinted skin except for sally), people came to the conclusion that theyre hispanic-american.

For everyone else? its literally just vibes. Aubreys house is a decrepit shithole with no notable cultural items in it, she and her mom look white, Basils house is kinda just a nondescript american suburb house full of plants and we never see his parents and he looks white, every fucking sprite in this game except for the Bread family, the npc Brent, his mom, and the pharmacist, is white as hell so we cant really tell with them. its almost all vibes.

and honestly its probably also vibes with kel and sunny too. both of the pieces of "evidence" i showed are easy to miss if you arent looking out for them (or if you arent obsessed with this fucking game like we are) so its just as likely that asian and hispanic players saw sunny and kel, saw traits that they shared with each character, and basically went "oh hey same". and thats probably what it is for the other characters too.

Yeah, there's this misconception of thinking that bc they dye their hair blonde and wear color contact, East Asian want to 'look White'. i think they definitely fancy the diversity of White ppl's phenotype such as the eye and hair color, but for pretty much all the rest, they cater to their own specific beauty standards (especially when it comes to bone structure and face proportion). White people tend to favor sharper bone structure while Asian are all about rounder and softer ones. I don't think Asians look up White people face structure (that make them look older and faster). This contrast was really striking with Kotakoti stunts in japanese magazines where she looked so out of place : despite her dolly blonde hair and blue eyes, she still had those strong adult Westerner features which were so different from her japanese pals' 🥴 (more soft and rounder)

rambling abt the shinra electric power company logo

i fucking love how absolutely egregiously ugly the logo is. im obsessed. everything about it is so bad and its SO funny because the rest of the graphic design for anything that shinra made is super topnotch and like, cookie cutter clean pretty sci-fi evil corporation stuff. and then the logo just stands out like a sore thumb. why are the japanese characters the color of chicken flesh? why the shadows trying and failing to make it look 3d? we know they couldve just properly pulled off a 3d look. why does everything white have some form of black outline except for the white slice on top? what is happening with the gradients?

and obviously the worst of it all is the SEC Shinra Electric Power Company. i didnt burn the shit outta this first off because obviously the japanese takes the first place and most intention however. the time has come.

IT JUST LOOKS LIKE A FUCKING AFTERTHOUGHT. COMPLETELY. LIKE SOME POOR DESIGNER WAS HANDED THE ALREADY COMPLETED LOGO WITH NO ENGLISH ON IT AND THEN WAS TOLD TO ADD THE ENGLISH

The way the font doesn't match the japanese at all and the way the letters are kerned so tightly together to get power to fit within the profile that they look like they have a variable baseline and the way everything is so tightly pushed together ONLY in that corner of the design. THEY JUST COMPLETELY SKIP A LETTER IN THE ACRONYM. it doesnt matter if none of the letters actually touch eachother they create tangents and ridicoulous tension in the design anyway. i love how it completely breaks any flow the design without english had. it just ruins it. its so good

i know nothing about designing for games like these so either 1. there's a reason for why the logo looks like this that i dunno about (very probable) 2. there was truly some incredibly poor design decisions made in the original 3. the english actually literally was an afterthought 4. the design is like this because its based off of the og game design (i couldnt find anything on that) and then the blame lays with the og game designers OR 4. the designers are mimicking a specific logo style and they're fucking geniuses. if anyone can show me the logo style theyre mimicking PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE this sort of design is my favorite i want to see more of it

- buying food for fans who wait outside music shows at 1am-5am to cheer for them

- the companies telling fansites when their flights are

i feel like there’s an addiction to meeting Thee idol, like continuing to go their fansign, following them to all their fansigns, seeing glimpses of them leave their cars

( ofc not excusing sasaeng behaviors bc that borders weird; tho ofc born out of Thee system + lack of ability to make repercussions )

so Thee fan has this idea in their head that they feel fulfilled after seeing their idol, a normal human being, that they can wait 2-3 days overnight on the sidewalk to get front row seats to [___]

(harries are like this too.) you saw your idol, that you have consumed, learned, feel like you /know/, but yet see as an… overarching comfort character? a deity? a phantom person?

3. Acceptance

with both sides of the relationship accepting their roles, is this thus a toxic or healthy relationship?

can it be healthy to have a powerdynamic so skewed?

will occasional fansigns demands/requests for aegyo, meowing, and humiliation, potential of large group boycotts for having a kid, pressure to stay single, straight, perfect looking, and perfect behaviors actually make the power balance given to the fans?

and thus comes how idols are different — the intimacy of dedication fans give to the idol in turn, because the idol is your deity you will sacrifice for, this supposedly creates an idol who has to give whim to the collective’s desires: what one gets one must give

4. Exhilaration

my conclusion to all of this is: this is kind of obsession obviously only applicable to a niche group, such as the GMA nct 127 overnighters who have too much time on their hands and exceptional will. but often i do think about the dynamics and the ultimate thought of not needing to deliver some Amazing Album/Performance (tho yes) (no one in this audience even had the GMA stream out/cared abt the 2baddies performance) but of holding the moods of a lot of people in precarious balance/riding the thin line of deity and regular person.

they are in a lot of ways creating a reason to live (seeing them/being entertained by/hope of a notice, a mention, reading vlive comment, replying to twitter question, making eye contact) , an all encompassing cycle that keeps a lot of people in the system of getting more hits of the high (seeing Thee idol) and getting Thee exhilaration, the suspense, the excitement, the adrenaline.

these are all emotions you can have perhaps, in love (romantic or not, wonderful experiences, etc) - but this Dynamic and their acceptance, encouragement, and Thee system creates those strong emotions when you have such a system that has such devotion, obsession, idolization.

this type of thrill + emotional turmoil is both a hit of happiness and yet the un-fulfillment of fully knowing/having perhaps… the ‘y/n moment of ur dreams’. but are these hits enough positive net for this relationship to be good? are they doing us a favor of continuing such a cycle of edging pure exhilaration? is this fulfillment the modern day catharsis?

also people who have that odd obsession with japanese culture and animanga and stuff or say they hate anime as a whole are just... aliens to me. i guess i sort of get it because there are so many options but also it just feels weird to me to group those all up?? theyre all just shows that happen to have been made in a different country theres still lots of different genres and things i dunno tho.

ive been watching a lot more recently mostly bc i dont really like live action, and all of the things made around here for my age group are just.... boring. and then my only other option is kids cartoons which also isnt really. the best. ok so to address the anons ive been getting here is kind of where it started,please don't reblog this and once again if you know who this is don't go after them,theyre are known for being shitty but i also dont want them swamped with hate either. i dont want drama i just want this to be over with i want them to just forget about me

so the first thing they are referring to is THIS post i made talking about things that bothered me with japanese troll and i was really heated when writting that post

they would always come to me to talk about other peoples trolls with japanese themes and wanted to constantly get trolls cancelled for having tat sort of influence which they would constantly label as appropriation which im saying right now it is not

now i got pretty sauced at this point as i have always been open with them about my struggles with being mixed and it effected me pretty bad growing up im Japanese Brazilian and took after my father but i grew up in japan so looking foreign in school was not great i got called a lot of stuff which led to me completly disowning the fact i was japanese till i was 17 pretty much becuse not looking japanese caused me a lot of grief

and heres where i was probably a little mean but let me explain. before this point i thought of this person as a friend cus it had been 2 years and they hadnt done anything truly bad so i had trusted them with some private information and this is when i found out during these 2 years this person had been already saying shit about me behind my back and telling people no to come to me for anything keep in mind we where friends during that.this person also had a history of taking my struggles and turning it into theirs. i lost my birth parents they're dead,i was fetishized at 15,i struggled with being mixed in a less then accepting country,my family disowned me for being mixed from my Brazilian dad and 9 out of 10 suddenly they had that problem to when never before did they mention it also they lied about a lot of little things to and constantly change theyre race. the small mention of my dad being brazillian and black then suddenly theyre parent was mixed black to??

im Japanese Brazilian i was adopted at 15ish by family friends who are Spanish which is why i live in Canada i have always been open about this and they knew that . also they say they where born in japan in a town that doesnt even have a maternity ward and they cant speak or understand any japanese in voice chat they never understood me if i said something in japanese and when it comes to them making sentences in my language theres always mistakes and its very poorly written and many times its just base level anime phrases. they also knew my biggest insecurity is my eyes which i have never edited (only my nose if im honest and i stopped doing that in 2017) this is me and this is also the picture they try to use to say i edit but neither of these are edited

also me liking anime and collecting it means im not japanese to them? i also havent been back to japan since 2016 17 ish and when i have gone after that is was only for a few days to take care of things . they constantly share pictures of me without permission and theyre pictures that have been deleted that they keep, they know i dont have much of my childhood pictures as they have literally seen me crying over how much stuff i left behind.they got to a point where the only time they would talk to me was to talk about japanese things i have never met somone so obsessed with Japanese culture who also claims to be Japanese but cant speak it,they never even cared about out friendship they just liked the fact i was japanese then went up on the defence when i said they where acting sus. they're selfish and childish

being an asian fan in the hs fandom is kinda, not great actually. in fact, it not only feels like we’re not here at all, that we’re erased, but its honestly? downright harmful. people treat the trivialization and fetishization of your culture to be,,, like a Big Joak. yall joke about weebs like these people havent been literally grooming and abusing asian girls, like we havent been made fun of enough for Their actions, like we aren't already viewed as the strange punchlines to jokes that still seem somehow acceptable. its somehow funny to joke about how you hate every sign of asian culture that shows up throughout the comics, like how dirk’s kotatsu was dumb and pretentious as if people in japan dont literally live with one and use it every single day!

even asian-coding in characters get swept away in favour of other headcanons. even the megidos, who are as close to canonically asian as they possibly can be in a medium like homestuck, are often drawn white or something completely different altogether. the stridlondes are also heavily asian-coded, and the fans who do pick up on that, who finally feel comforted by someone like them as protagonists? they often just.. give up on that, because they see so little representation in the fandom. (theres only like one popular artist i know of that draws the strilondes asian? but like, hats off to u pal, youre fighting the good fight). also, it seems strange, to be represented so little considering almost 3 billion people on earth is asian, which is, Quite A Lot to be not represented a lot. dont get me wrong, i adore the outpouring of more diverse art of the kids, but a hard truth to swallow is that pocs being weebs/fetishizing asian culture, is just as harmful as white people doing the same. there is a world of difference between japanese dirk, trying to interface with his lost culture by clinging to the most performative and popular parts of it, than another dirk, appropriating people’s cultures because he thinks its funny or interesting based off a show he watched once. i love how people are like "wow the striders like anime and care about traditions and use japanese words and overall just seem like diaspora kids" and the conclusion they draw from that is "clearly,, they cannot be asian" bc a non-asian person being interested in those things is better than an asian person whose interested in their own culture i guess??

in fact, a lot of these narratives are so much more interesting once theyre looked at through their coded lenses!

Dave’s struggle with coming to terms with his emotions strikes such an interesting chord when the striders’ concept of irony and never showing their emotions Correspond so well to the idea of honour/face, where youre not supposed to show that youre Ever Sad or anything that isnt a positive emotion because it shows that youre a Failure and You Failed and that makes you a Bad Person, which is exactly what dave struggles with because hes So Guilty about it, which ties to the guilt and shame a lot of asian people feel about not being able to live up to impossible standards set by their parents, which is another theme we see reflected in all four strilondes. 

rose’s strained relations with her mother are mirrored in so many of our second-generation lives and makes so much more cultural sense when looked at that way. the weird distance you hold from your parents, where you cant look each other in the eyes anymore, because every interaction feels more like a business transaction. you hand in your good grades and praise from teachers, talking about how mature you are, and they return with some present or gift that you don't really want. you dont know anything about them, and they dont know anything about you, Not the person you Actually Are, anyways. but there is a yearning, to be close, to know eachother, but you only feel it in return when its too late. as well as her Obsession to be mature, to be smart and adult-like because thats what shes praised for, because you Need to be academically the best always and that means reading dictionaries until the sun goes down, repeating each word until they are engraved into your mind. always finding competition, subtle or not, because if you are not the winner, what are you?  dirk’s wild performative love of japanese culture (which also, in turn, lead to non-asian fans literally trashing it like it was a funny joke to call someone’s culture lame and stupid) seems like ‘ironic’ weebism, but its also being Exactly the type of over-the-too performative reclaiming of our culture that so many asian diaspora kids do when they’re teens! they feel bad about pushing away their culture as youth, but they’re not quite mature enough to actually care about the rich history and ‘boring’ parts, so they cling to pop culture, to social media and something so much more easily consumable, like anime. which is not even to mention the idea of him trying desperately to connect to a culture that he has never grown up in, but still belonged to by consuming mass amounts of media, being Such an immigrant story. as well as his massive competitive streak and need to make other people as good as he is (but not better), is the type of internalized pressure that a lot of asian kids feel as well. 

and all the stridlondes have various anxieties about not performing well enough, of not living up to a standard that they have set for themselves, feeling like even a single step back or even one mistake is a catastrophic failure that’s branded to you for life. Which is just as much of a mental health thing as it is like,,, an asian thing

anime is so hard to get into because literally 99% of it is about horny teenagers, like dude I want to watch stuff thatll make me go “holy shit holy shit holy shit” but thats hard to do when you got 16 year olds obsessed with their underwear like god damn who in the world thinks that is fun to watch.  and its not like sex stuff should never be a part of shows, but the way theyre like “omg my BOOBS are SHOWING OH MY GOD” is so unsatisfying. who give a shit (who give a tit) about any of that I just want to see cool shit or complicated shit thatll get me thinking yknow. not to mention the shows that are like that have the most generic bullshit plot going for it, where they can only keep the series going by having another “unique” girl design for the show. like this has to be some sort of conspiracy theory that the majority of the anime industry pumps out repetitive boob shows for horny clicks. that isnt entertainment bro, that shit taints actual unique and beautiful ideas. its so bizarre looking at the most watched series on any anime platform too because there are just thousands of these weird ass generic boob shows (Ive coined the phrase by now) and every once in a while we will see stuff that stands out like jojo or hunter x hunter where they survived the onslaught of horny garbage to become a successful series. and its not a Japanese Cultural Thing™ either because there are shows out there who dont make horny women the focal point of the story. even in japan, people will ostracize weebs because its weirdo shit. anyway, the moral of the story is: Im fucking furious with boring women in anime who are only there to eventually wear a bikini in the dreaded Beach Episode™

a problem i face with hyperfixations is that i’m absolutely currently hyperfixating on cottagecore and dinosaur paleontology and the owl house and random little bits and pieces about things like looking up different types of charms in various cultures and what kind of fibre are handwoven baskets made out of and gradually becoming more obsessed with halloween as the days tick closer

but my executive dysfunction is so severe that even hyperfixations are just straight up blocked by ED

so i just sit there. thinking. about becoming a paleontologist.

like wouldn’t it be cool if i did a SHIT ton of research into dinosaur paleontology and archaeology and what it would be like to be a paleontologist and an archaeologist and learn how to carbon date fossils and then i could spam my mother with 3000 more texts about cool dinosaur facts apart from the most well known “dinosaur tail with feathers found in amber” and “99% of an ankylosaurus had been preserved and wow would you look at that the paleontologists that were trying to figure out what the creature looked like were right” and how pigmentation has been found fossilized and its more than just bones that are fossilized you just have to know where to look

wouldn’t it be cool if i did a shit ton of research into various cultures ranging from japanese culture to hebrew and arabic and icelandic and scandinavian and seeing how each culture thrived and teaching myself about how these people lived way back and how theyre still present in the world now so i could write better and more diverse characters from various places on earth

wouldn’t it be cool if i looked into mythologies ranging past greek and roman mythology and looked into norse gods and various different religions to study how they were formed and how they thrived and how christianity took over the earth for a solid two days

omg THANK YOU <3 okay so ive been thinking about this for all of 24 hours specifically in relation to My Tolkien Adaptation Plan In My Brain which is VERY vague but covers th → lotr → silm. and what i was thinking is that there is NO way to reboot lotr in particular with a score thats stylistically similar to howard shore’s bc it will just feel like a pale imitation!! he put an insane amount of work and depth into that music and the themes are soooo iconic you can’t not have them if youre doing a classic film score. so what if we did something completely different and had an orchestral psychedelic indie score? cue readmore of shame

i definitely dont want to use kishi bashi’s existing songs partly bc they are like. songs not a fantasy film score whsfkjf and a lot of them use more electronic instrumentation than i would want for this. and also bc a lot of them are inspired by very specific subjects like most of the omoiyari album is about japanese internment in the us and im not really gonna throw that into a tolkien movie. 

BUT in listening to his music i feel like there is soooo much potential to use all the different styles he works with to create the moods of different scenes and cultures in lotr like howard shore did. + the general structure of mr ishibashi’s music is also something that i think would work SO well as a film score and for tolkien specifically— it’s really layered and lush with varying levels of Full Orchestra and Chamber and Guy With A Guitar, and the richness and often like. shimmering quality? idk it fits so so well with my vision of tolkien based on the books and it has the lightness and playfulness that is maybe sometimes less present in howard shore/pj’s work, but also the ability to create really emotional Big Score moments with standout themes and orchestral layering..i think there is just such a rich world he could create with the music of all the different distinct cultures in middle earth that have nonetheless been influencing each other for thousands of years, and in my brain it’s a musical style that fits really well into my 2d animated silm concept too :3 

umm specific songs to illustrate some of this:

brandenburg stomp: this song (in a more acoustic arrangement) is so much like what EYE imagine the elves’ music could be like, like the silly songs in rivendell and mirkwood from the book that are more teasing and jolly. the fast vocals + high register/competing background violin line/playful rhythm changes all feel SO elvish to me, in the mischievousness and brightness and slight scariness that i picture for the elves. like it’s a musical flex! it feels like it could get faster and faster and take you to some other universe but it slows down again bc theyre just playing with you! anyway i have a whole little scene in my head of the hobbits and aragorn and arwen dancing to this with the other elves in rivendell the night before the council and it is very precious to me

annie heart thief of the sea polyvinyl version has a folk quality that i really love for some of the cities of men and maybe the hobbits as well. folk songs of rohan! laketown! i would fucking love to work with mr ishibashi on setting the songs from the book to music oh my godddd

for the actual Score moments rather than in-universe songs: violin tsunami, in fantasia, theme from jerome (forgotten worlds), and conversations at the end of the world string quartet live version are really good representations of the different emotions and recognizable themes he’s able to create with both simple and layered instrumentation. and those motifs could then be repeated and recreated throughout the movies in different arrangements! he’s also so good at using instruments to create a mood rather than a specific melody like in impromptu no. 1 and i would love that kind of music for other scenes too. ive also messed around transcribing his vocal lines for violin for fun in the past and i think his music works VERY well with a single instrumental line carrying the melody rather than a singer, which would work better for a score and also gives it so much musical flexibility to create different moods and sounds. idk i miss playing music with people and mr ishibashi is so good at music it makes me physically ill and im obsessed with this now help
