Hi! I have a question, you can ignore this if you want to but I’ve found myself really loving the way you write and the range of writing you can articulate as well. Speaking from someone who is nowhere close to that level of skill you possess, would you mind being able to explain your journey of writing, if you practiced any particular methods or anything else to get to this stage you are at right now? Unless you have been gifted the talent of writing from birth and didn’t need to try for much long or long enough to call it a journey. Could you also spare some tips and advice for someone who wants to start writing stories and what to look into/practice?

i don't mean this in a self-deprecating way, but i've never considered myself a gifted or super incredible writer, i just get hype about story ideas and try to make them as good as i can. due to that, i start sweating when people ask for advice because i don't consider myself qualified... i do have a writing advice tag, but take everything i say with a grain of salt!! if it's fanfic literally all that matters is that you enjoy whatever you're writing.

i'm more than happy to share my writing journey though!! it's kinda fun to reminiscence.

i've loved reading and writing ever since i was a little lock. while thinking about this ask, it occurred to me that what i've always been the most invested in are the characters. i'd think about 275894275 different storylines with them. i didn't start writing fanfic until i was around 11 though, everything was handwritten. or in flipnote hatena.

i did a lot of fanfic writing from 11-14 buuuut then my interest in it kinda fizzled out. it wasn't until i watched hxh for the first time that i took it up again bc chrollo is that powerful. that's when i started conceptualizing HWR. i looked at my early writing folder, the first HWR fanfic i wrote was in 2016 when i was 15 ?? here's a cursed excerpt:

anyway, once i started making googly eyes at chrollo, it was gg. i've been writing often ever since.

what's helped me the most is to focus on the elements i find interesting. for example, i like fleshing out my MCs, focusing on dialogue, and developing a universe around the main pairing. because i enjoy this so much it's (mostly) always easy to devote time and effort toward it.

so i think it comes down to finding out what niches you like and working with those. some writers prefer to write with heavy prose, others are more succinct, some writers like dialogue, others prefer to be more action based... etc etc. this does require a little time if you're completely new to writing, but you know yourself best. you'll eventually pick up on what part of the story you're most excited to write.

this isn't particularly mind-blowing or anything but i hope it helps some 😭 what completely Altered my mindset was when i realized i can be as self-indulgent as humanly possible. cringe is not in my vocabulary. write a MC where every single character is in love with them if you want. write a 100k word fic about your OC being isekaid into x world. post about your f/os, draw art of you with your fav, go ham.

thank you!! and yes i usually have at least a vague idea of what i want in the story before i start, though a lot of it didn't become concrete until i started writing/things evolving from there. i made a big (slightly) vague timeline of the entire fic from beginning to (almost) end, and then i keep fleshing it out from there as the ideas keep coming to me/evolving, and for each chapter i make an even more detailed outline, and THEN i get started on the final chapter. so its a bit of a process bahaha, but the brainstorming is really fun!! as for any advice, im not sure. maybe just brainstorm/write down scenes and ideas that you know for a fact that you want to put in your fic, and then try to find a way to connect them to other scenes from there and work backwards. basically WRITE WHAT YOU WANT TO READ, cuz like im my own biggest fan fr, thats the most important part LMAO

The door opens once again.

Nobody should be in your room this late. Not any of the brothers, at any rate.

“Hey, MC.” Solomon sighs, kneeling at your bedside.

Your heart thunders in your chest at the tender look on his face, eyebrows furrowed and lips twisted into a wry smile. If you didn’t know him any better, you’d say he found this amusing. That’s probably what he likes to think.

“It’s been a while. Three days too long.” he says, reaching out to you, “You’ll come back soon though, right? You wouldn’t want to leave me all lonely.”

He cups your face, brushing his thumb over the skin. He mumbles something about how you’re still warm and that’s good, but it breaks your heart because that means his mind is telling him you might be dead. You wish you could move, you wish you could pull him into bed next to you and thank him for everything he’s done for you. He’s put himself in the most dangerous of situations, even braving time itself to come back and save you. He made sure you weren’t alone and stayed with you when you needed someone the most, and yet he still feels as though he’ll never be enough for you.

At this rate, he’ll destroy himself for you.

But Solomon just laughs. He sucks in air through his teeth as if he’s in pain, and for a second you can see a grimace on his face.

“I’ll have some of your favorite snacks for you when you come back to me.” he whispers, leaning over your body like a safety blanket, “I’ll make them myself. I’ll make them just for you.”

He kisses your forehead, and you feel a cold drop of something hit your skin.

Tears.

Your heart shatters in your chest as Solomon leaves.

i honestly was a little worried that both the mc’s and soobin’s change was too sudden 😭 i still feel like i could’ve executed it better, maybe? or maybe i’m just overthinking things, idk. but seriously, that smut was genuinely one of the most insane one i’ve ever written?? i didn’t realize that i’d forever be cementing soobin to a life of nonhuman!aus after that— sorry soobin i simply do not make the rules.

ok. so! in the universe that WTBW is set in, Soobin’s species (that i am too lazy to go check the name of) are seen as absolute indestructible units by both other aliens/monsters and humans. Why is that? Because of their blood! it’s used as a weapon against other nonhumans because it’s toxic and deadly— thus, the reputation of the lilac blood gave the creatures the image of being insanely dangerous. 

as a matter of fact, there are operation sites that breed and harness blood from Soobin’s species because it’s such a sought after (and illegal. insanely illegal.) weapon! and that’s the reason why humans— more specifically, the mc and her crew— are so terrified of the Hexen species, (yes i did look up the name just now.) and more importantly, their blood— because it’s known to be used as a lethal weapon. 

Now, onto the main question; blood bonds, what the hell is up with that? lilac blood is lethal to every species but the one it came from— in other words, it doesn’t harm the hexen species. so, when they give each other / inject their blood into each other (i know, it sounds a little gross) it’s basically their way of bonding/mating— it represents them uniting and becoming one, and is a promise to remain together as long as they’re alive; yeah, they bond for life!

long story short, yes— however, they don’t affect him as much as they would a normal human, or another nonhuman that isn’t as strong as his species. would they penetrate his skin? yes, but it would be a surface wound at most; his species has evolved to be extremely strong because they carry lilac blood and are able to receive it, so their body should be strong enough to handle it, and also, they have like six other limbs to attend to— it takes quite a bit of mental and physical strength to be able to develop and strengthen everything properly, if that makes sense.

could the mc’s crew have taken him down? yeah, a headshot is a headshot and soobin would’ve been a goner askdlh,, but his threats were enough to bring them to their senses bc yk.. he has tentacles that can move at the blink of an eye and he would’ve most likely taken one of them down before getting killed. he’s not invincible, but you do have to put a little extra effort in harming/killing him.

here’s the fun part hehe— so lilac blood, when used on humans, doesn’t kill them. Instead, it acts as an aphrodisiac. originally, lilac blood was only used as a weapon against non-humans; in other words, before space exploration evolved into what it is in that universe. Because of that, the hexen species didn’t evolve to combat against humans— which means the deadly aspect is taken away from the whole injection of it all. on soobin’s planet, everyone is already strictly against interacting with humans— the hatred doesn’t run as intense as other planets however, which is why soobin is so indifferent when he encounters the mc without her pin— so really, none of them knew what would happen if you injected your blood into them. 

soobin simply thought it would work as usual; what he didn’t account for, however, was the fact that humans don’t die from it— which means that they’re able to sustain it, and now… soobin’s body and mind thinks he’s just bonded with another of his kind!

as previously mentioned, the hexen species bonds for life— meaning that, if soobin tried to kill the mc, his body would go haywire and immediately think that his mate— his other half— is dead. a life without your mate can be seriously detrimental to both one’s physical and mental health, so soobin wouldn’t have lasted long without the mc; he would’ve been immediately weakened, and the crew would’ve taken that chance to take him down— if they somehow chose to keep him alive, he quickly would’ve died after anyway. (that’s dark sorry.)

Therapy is great! Hardest part is to acknowledge you need it - anon, we would be in the same boat, I would def go crazy myself

From my personal experience, people that get into relationships young, tend to move through every step at a lighting speed. One of my closest friends got engaged within a year of knowing the guy, aaand she was 16/17 at the time? Now they are separated. So, yeah, insane, would not recommend.

But for TBV couple; JK was endeared since day 1 by our MC, within like 2 months all of their free-time was spent together. JK introduced her to the lavish life - first row in sold-out concerts, theatre plays all across the world with the fam, dinner parties with her favourite artists, and even the small things - getting collected from work, rather than using the public transportation; but on the other hand, MC showed him a side he was not accustomed to - drive-through cinemas, rave parties, watching football in pubs with her schoolmates.

If you spend that much time with someone, you get accustomed real quick, especially if it’s your first love. It wasn’t an over-thinker when he proposed, even less so when they got married. It just made sense. On the same note, he def introduced MC to his fams within a month; they were curious who’s the girl he’s sneaking out to, even more so when it took half an hour for him to say goodbyes after every theatre play. I imagine Jin teasing him the whole way back, and JK just proudly smiling, not denying anything.

Uuu, do tell how it goes when you read LIAG! Not sure if it will be your cup of tea, as it’s very different from TBV, and the first chapters are more or less for background building/character development. But along the way, it gets very serious, honestly the darkest story I’m writing by a long shot. But LIAG is a series, so it takes a while. And on the same note - I need to check myself and finally start writing the next chapter, TBV is living in my mind rent-free, and it’s about time it moves out 😭

why MXTX is my new most favourite author

So recently, I started watching The Untamed and then decided midway through that I want that bl so I tried to switch to the novel and that... was a whole fcking mess where now I have no clue what's canon and what's not cause I ended up finishing it by half watching through The Untamed, half through the manhua and half through the novel...

And then I decided to try Scum Villain (SVSSS) and then Heaven Official's Blessing (TGCF) as well because I enjoyed both MDZS and SVSSS. And 3 books later, I'm now writing a post just to express my love for MXTX's wonderful amazing writing. And just to scream into the void of all the reasons why I love her works.

1. Premises

Starting off, her ideas are just very unique and I absolutely love how hooking each of them are!! The world building, the plotting and the settings are insane in practically all of her novels and I'm just in awe of how consistently she keeps coming up with something fresh and interesting that will grab the interest of everyone who stumbles across it.

2. Genres

As somebody who likes to write myself, I consider comedy as the hardest genre to write. Followed by sexual/erotic scenes. And action too! MXTX somehow manages to do all of them so well and I just feel a lot of admiration for her as a writer for all the fun and the heartbreak that she puts into her stories.

3. Romance

MXTX's romance is just *chef's kiss*. There's no other word for it, it's just mind blowingly good. It never gets to the point of being "cheesy" or "cringey" or too forced. It always sounds natural, feels good and feels deep. There is a pattern to how she writes her main characters but I love it. I love that pattern. It's always the other MC (LBG, LWJ, HC) that falls first and falls deep while we see the story from the point of view of someone who falls without even knowing it (SY, WWX, XL). What that leaves behind is the constant thrum of anticipation, of knowing what their actions mean while the main MC is being dumb and frustrating lol. Her dialogues and scenes between them are always just 😵‍💫 [Eg. wangxian's first kiss?? hua cheng's 3000 lanterns??] There is so much love through actions and acts of service and it translates so well into what they have. She writes romance that is meant for the centuries.

4. Characters

MXTX's characters are just. so. good??? Like I'm not even talking about the main characters, it's always the side characters. Like she just has a way of writing such rounded fleshed-out characters with their own stories and own behaviours and own reasonings and you can't help but love them. Really, even the antagonists have so much in them that you can't help but feel for them, even if you hate what they have done. I love how her characterization for each of them is so distinct and clear and their conversations are always so so natural and real and I feel so in awe of the situations she builds up around them. Their problems are always something that can never be blamed onto a single person– they are deep and multi-faceted just like real life. The choices made by the characters are always right in their own terms and you can't even hate them for those choices because you understand the reasoning. That is how real life is and MXTX captures it so so well.

5. Side Stories

Also, what's with her side stories being so fcking angsty 😭 Like beefleaf (Shi Qingxuan and He Xuan) and Banyue in TGCF, XXC/SXC/Xue Yang in MDZS, Shen Jiu and Yue Qingyuan in SVSSS??? She does NOT hold back on the side characters and gives them so much depth that you just start caring for each and every one of them. You see them in a thousand different lights from their own monsters to the smiles they have on now. She writes her side characters like they are real people too and I absolutely love that. So much. That automatically made her one of my favourite authors ever.

Anyway, thank you for coming to my long rant for why I love MXTX and her writing so much lmao. I don't think anyone is interested but I had to get it out of my system. She's fcking amazing.

AHHH omg the thing about being a true pisces is that i love making imaginary scenarios in my head, to the point where i tend to build up on them and make imaginary worlds. so writing fics about a specific trope or in a particular universe is something i personally enjoy doing because i do it in real life LMFAO. so ahhh just hearing that you feel like you're being transported to the worlds/universe that i create is so good to hear. it's so hard to write a fic because you have to create the characters, but also the world/universe that they are in! ahh i'm just so happy right now :')

Hello. I just read the "A picture to burn" fic.

1. We love a TS reference and 2. I don’t think the words I’m going to write in here will make justice to the things it made me feel.

I’m gonna start with the obvious, it was an amazing piece of work, you are an amazing writer. You really know how to paint a picture and makes us feel the atmosphere. You had me in tears.

Of course you don’t need any kind of validation from me, but as someone who’s also broken, who was also abused, the way you write Gen’s feelings, let me tell you, it was just perfect. The way it feels to be this seemingly normal person, until something reminds us that we’re not.  

“She was tainted, in more ways than one”, “…afraid of what her broken mind will come up with”, “…after weeks of pretending like she isn’t wounded, he’s finally seeing the broken part”. Ma’am, I – seriously, I had no words, but I have a lot of feelings.

Look, do I love all the other MCs for being so confident? Yes I do. They’re amazing. 👏🏼

But those thoughts Gen had; I believe they’re also normal, even though sometimes we like to be wired differently. But I’ve seen her journey, I’ve seen her trying her damn best to be better. I like to think I am too.

Gen, in a lot of ways, is me and because of that I wanted to show that she's not perfect and has real problems. Her anxiety is a big part of her, as it is with me, and I wanted to have that represented. I wanted others who suffer like us know we're not alone and that even smart doctors with super hot husbands can have it too lol

Second, I'm so sorry you went throw a similar past, like Gen. I want to give you a giant hug. No matter what, remember that you're strong and brave and worth so much more the Ryan's of the world have said.

As you’ve mentioned that the mc would struggle with transforming into a demon, I’m really interested to know who you think would help the mc with her transition as a demon the most? So because she and Jisung now have a good relationship, would he be more inclined to help her or because she and Felix have such a good relationship would he be the one that supports her the most? Or would it be that each member of the clan would help with different aspects?

I love the idea that the mc will get on well with the younger clan members 😍😍

I also love the idea that the mc would act as a sort of storyteller due to her more recent life in the interior, definitely highlights that she would have a good relationship with the younger clan members! And I can definitely imagine the mc telling stories to the younger ones one evening and Chan just watching with heart eyes ����

I’m very interested to know what the gods would do in regards to the Lykos clan trespassing through their lands… and what the other demon clans would do knowing that an augur has turned into a demon as well… I wonder if they’d still be able to tell that she was an augur? i really like your thoughts on jisung being able to help the mc with their demon transition—it’s definitely true that they have a VERY different relationship at the end than they did at the beginning. the mc ends up meaning a lot to jisung (even tho he’d never admit it hahaha) so i like this idea a lot !! i think felix’s giving nature would also make him very inclined to help out the reader during their struggles with the transition period—in that way, i do think they’d actually all help out with any issues the mc might have! i can definitely see her going to different members for different things, but i don’t think any of them would mind at all—she’s one of them now, after all.

and omg you get it!! you see the storyteller vision…mc coming up with ~slightly embellished~ stories of interior life while chan looks on fondly in the background…oh lord i LOVE the way your mind works !!!! 😩😩

as far as the other demon clans go, i don’t think they’d be able to tell the mc had been an augur—hecate had been able to, but she has a much different connection to magic in the citadel than the demons do. i can, however, definitely picture some of the gods going after lykos, especially aeolus since they did kinda trespass through his village 😭 and i can see him spreading the word towards the other gods who might be more than happy to have something to do (antagonize a demon clan) for the first time in two hundred years…so to answer your question, i do think it’s entirely possible that our mc could still be in plenty of danger 💀

i so love your thoughts oh my goodness, thank YOU so much for being so lovely and sending in these questions about this series!! i also miss seeing you in my inbox every week LOL, there were a few chapters towards the end where i’d get excited thinking about what your reaction might be to a couple particular scenes (the act ii: part iv cliffhanger being one of them…) hehehe. but frw&d is certainly always there for any time you feel like rereading! there are actually a few spoilers/foreshadowing lines of the mc becoming a demon in the first few chapters that i wonder if anyone has caught yet ;))

I don’t think of myself as big on angst but this was actually a pleasure to write, as sad as it is. So thank you for the request and the quick follow up! 🙇🏻‍♀️ The cut below is 95% for length and sadness but there is a little bit of a tenderly spicy memory under it, fyi. Tense floats around here on purpose because the poor man is HURTING.

He has long loved her trembles. Her body has been expressive since their first meeting, always finding some silly reason to shudder. Fury. Food. Fun. Him.

He dared to admit only to himself that he was disappointed when she grew a little more resistant to him over time. Never very resistant. His mouse is a sensitive soul in a sensitive shell. And they both enjoy it when he teases her. There have been so many ways to tease her.

Nothing can convince Mitsuhide that she is not heaven-made. It was while he touched her that true feeling first came back to some of his fingertips. The ability to discern real sensation instead of only pressure. And of all things he could have touched, it was the miracle of the skin of her throat. He convinced her to let him spend an entire night loving it with his mouth and those newly reborn fingers, just so he could compare their sensitivity. The way she trembled then, all tight and vulnerable but open for him… he will never forget it.

Mitsuhide curses himself for ever being amused at those first fierce trembles in the early days of autumn. He could tell they were different, just not how. And the two of them had been so safe—as safe as he could make them— and so happy. Her laughter painted their every day. She even made him laugh. She did it the first time he tickled her and turned those odd trembles to full-body wriggles as she tried to escape. He never went fully off guard, but he told himself (as a fool tells himself) that they were safe.

They were not. She was sick, and she didn’t get better. And then there were no trembles, for awhile. Selfish demon that he is, he relished the ones that came back, even though he knew they meant doom.

Doesn’t everything mean doom? Mitsuhide has thought this a dozen times, sitting or laying beside her. Even underneath her, a few times, desperate to put her cheek to his chest. The question sounds like the logic of a man who has given up. It sounds like him before he met her.

Now he’s met her, and loved her. Woken up to her warmth. Felt the places she is softest when she sleeps. Known the flowers and patterns and scents she likes. Come to enjoy the flavorless but deep pleasure of sharing the desserts she loves most.

And now she is dying, because he dared to love her and he lived a very terrible life before she was part of his. Maybe because he’s done a few terrible things since he loved her. A part of his mind is trying to come down like a shield around his soul, but his heart shoulders giant stones into its path so it cannot land and close him off. He loves her. He’s not going to stop loving her when she’s gone. He’s not going to stop loving her until the day he stops living.

The wanness of her smile will haunt him more than anything he has ever done. More than the bruises he treated early in their time together. Is there a part of her he can capture and tie up so she cannot leave him?

There is not. A mouse is evasive, and one of her whisker-tricks is that she has always known when to fight and when to surrender. He’s been right there beside her to see all her fighting. He is right there beside her to see when her body begins to truly give up.

They are alone, so though he is more angry at all of this than sad, he lets her see a kitsune’s tears. Maybe she can barter them for comfort in her next life. He’s got her laying his lap since she can barely move, and she’s just staring at him intensely, eyes tired but alive. He knows she is trying to look at nothing but his face. If she were well she would be smiling, and her hands would be on his cheeks.

But she is not well. She can barely talk, and he knows she is exhausted. Whatever this is, it has eaten away at her, like a bigger and more vicious mouse. It has stolen her light away grain by grain.

She uses some of her precious energy to whisper words that come out of her like the last leaves of the year, drifting down. I love you. Hold me.

Mitsuhide slides her up in his lap so she can lean against him and he can hold her better. He tells her that he loves her, and to close her eyes and rest. As gently as he can, he eases the side of her face onto his shoulder and her hands onto his robe, to the places she might clutch if she were strong enough. He kisses her forehead, runs his nose along one of her fine eyebrows, and repeats that he loves her. He’s clearly losing control.

So he touches the tender skin on the side of her throat, and murmurs to her all his memories of the night when he touched that place and could suddenly feel her. He feels her relax against him, so like the way she used to snuggle. Trusting, comfortable. Peaceful. He keeps talking. More memories. At one point there is a little cough he’s sure is laughter. He doesn’t move his hand. He wishes she were well enough for him to hold her throat and tilt her head for a kiss that would make her sway. But she is not. He leaves his fingers where they are.

And because he has feeling in those fingers, he feels when her life flutters out and his world ends. He soaks her hair with a hushed flood of silver kitsune tears and wishes he could die rather than endure this. She never learned how to haggle. Who will protect her? How will he find her in the next life? How long will it take?

He realizes he’s trembling.

He hates it.
