The evolution of Morticia Addams (3)
If the 60s sitcom made her part of popular culture, it is the 90s movies that turned Morticia (there played by Angelica Huston) into such an icon.
Tumblr media
The two 90s movies (The Addams Family and The Addams Family Values) decided to return to the original drawings of Charles Addams, while also keeping some iconic elements of the 60s Morticia, resulting in a mix of the two incarnations. She is still a kind woman with a sweet tone of voices and some smiles from time to time, but she much “calmer” and “quieter” than her 60s counterpart. While not exactly back to the cold and harsh woman of the Charles Addams’ cartoons, she still barely expresses her emotions : her voice is aways soft and gentle, she is never seen openly angry or sad, it looks like she can’t feel physical pain, her smiles are brief and discreet, her fury is as cold as ice and her insults very subtle, every gesture of her has a slowness and a pose to it... The “corpse elegance” taken to a new level.
The movie did try to return to the original “ghoulish” look of Charles Addams, by making this Morticia more gaunt, paler and eerier than the one of Carolyn Jones - but her wearing jewels as an aspect kept from the sitcom. In fact, this incarnation of Morticia might be a bit more “coquette” (Tish, that’s French!) than the previous ones, due to what seems to be a greater interest in fashion: not only do we see her wear various kinds of jewels, but she also wears different dresses throughout the movie. Carolyn Jones’ Morticia wasn’t a stranger to accessories (ranging from a widow veil to sunglasses), but Huston’s Morticia is seen wearing different kinds of dresses too. All black, cut at the edges, and all tight-fitting, of course, but with varying materials, cuts and details (for example you can spy a spiderweb pattern on one). Plus, her makeup is here much more explicit and noticeable than the one of the 60s Morticia. (And let’s not forget that she is the keeper of Addams good tastes : “Debby... Pastels?”)
Tumblr media
Now, what the movie actually managed to do was truly bring back the full “glamour” into Morticia. This glamour that Charles Addams first tried but then discarded in favor of the “ruined beauty”, this glamour that was creeping its way up Carolyn Jones’ performance, this glamour is in full display here in one Gothic explosion. Her calmer and “colder”, yet loving and caring behavior makes this Morticia suave and fascinating. The passionate love and implied sexual life of the 60s also becomes in the 90s movie a full lustful relationship with Gomez - if not to say “kinky”. She begs sensualy her husband to abandon himself to feverish madness, her very behavior makes it seems like she tempts and seduces all those around her, and it is explicitely said that Gomez and Morticia regularly indulge in sado-masochistic games (where Morticia is the one usually ending up in the torture device - for her “torture” means “pleasure”).
Both adding to the otherwordly mystery of the character AND her dark witchy seduction is the peculiar light trick used on her during the movies: in most of the scenes her face is shadowed, except for the eyes. This light constantly glowing around her eyes is actually a nod to Bela Lugosi’s Dracula, who was filmed with such a similar trick to evoke the hypnotizing effects of a vampire’s gaze. In fact, where the sitcom seemed to lean on Morticia being a witch, the movies rather make subtle jokes at her being more of a vampire-like entity. Beyond the light-on-the-eye visual clue, she rarely gets out during the day, complains of being “hurt” by the sunlight in the morning, and when she smiles - as many pointed out - she never shows her teeth.
Tumblr media
Just like Carolyn Jones’ incarnation, this Morticia is the one that easily cares and gets concerned about the other members of her family. Most of the time, it is for Gomez, who is so prone to despair and anger, but she also is seen getting concerned about her children - of the two parents it seems she spends more time with them, usually overseeing their games. Mind you, her often being worried or seeking help for those she loves doesn’t mean she is a passive character, far from it. In fact, just like in the original Charles Addams cartoons, Morticia is truly the “head of the family” (or rather the second head). Every time the family is split, torn apart, every time Gomez falls into hopelesness and apathy, in front of every great catastrophy and when the father fails to lead, she takes the reins of the family, she holds together the clan, she tries to find solutions... and constantly she reminds people of the family credo, both a giver of hope and a subtle threat to their ennemies “We gladly feast on those who try to subdue us”.
Even with that being said, Morticia still seems to be a compassionate character in her own way, as she often ends up feeling empathy with the villains (due to completely understanding why they are such vile people and insane criminals) and usually wishes the enemies of her family could have been friends (again, due to the charm of them being usually vile people and insane criminals).
Tumblr media
They kept from the 60s a certain passion for gardening, though it is more subdued than in the sitcom. These are mostly just little nods here and there, as in the movies it is Lurch that seems to mostly take care of the greenhouse - Morticia is seen in one scene cutting off the blooming flowers of roses to only keep the thorny stems, like in the series, and in her bedroom she keeps a carnivorous-looking plant that hates the sun (and which might be a nod to the original Cleopatra - in fact if I recall well this sun-hating flower was referred as Cleopatra in the original script)..
I said that the movie threw hints at a vampiric nature for Morticia, but it doesn’t mean they forget the “witchy” nature of the character - they can play on both archetypes thanks to Morticia’s very nature being so unclear. In the second movie she mentions casually that her duties as a housewife, devoted spouse and loving mother have kept her away from the “dark arts” and from “hellish crusades” ; and in the first movie she is seen as one of the “leaders” of the séance to summon the spirit of Fester (though to be fair all the women of the family lead the séance in turn). Plus, there is the fact the hag-like grandmother is here yet again her mother: just like in the 60s sitcom Morticia is here the “outsider” of the family, having married into the Addams clan through Gomez, and the Addams manor actually belonging to Gomez and Fester. Though, unlike in the sitcom where we know Morticia comes from the Frump family, in the movies we never learn or hear about Morticia’s maiden name... In fact, the movie never hints at any kind of past of not being an Addams for Morticia, and her very mother seems to be fully part of the Addams clan - she even met Gomez at his cousin’s funerals... Knowing the Addamses, they are probably not above marrying distant cousins, but the movie leave it all creepily and disturbingly ambiguous.

Final Review!
For the final review in this line-up, I'm going to be looking at "The Addams Family"! Released in 1991, this film boasts an impressive cast with Raul Julia, Angelica Huston, and Christopher Lloyd.
Tumblr media
In this classic adaptation of Charles Addams famed New Yorker comics, as well as the equally classic 1960s sitcom of the same name, the film follows the Addams Family- a clan of macabre, eccentric, supernatural, yet warm and loving people. Patriarch Gomez (played by Raul Julia) misses his brother Fester who has been missing for over a decade after a falling out they had. Gomez's scheming lawyer, Tully Alford, realizes that the portrait of Fester bears a strong resemblance to the son of a loan shark that he owes money to, so the three crooks stage a plot to rob the Addams of their treasure- have the lookalike pretend to be Fester to sneak into the vault, with his loan shark mother acting as his psychiatrist. The plan goes south as "Fester" slowly integrates himself into the family and grows to love them as much as they love him.
Thoughts:
This movie is iconic and for a good reason. All of the actors are perfectly cast, with Julia and Huston being a standout as Gomez and Morticia, who are wonderfully insane and dramatic without being too much. Spiritually, it is ne of the most faithful adaptations of the Charles Addams comics, and even sneaks in a few cameo references, such as the gag of pouring hot tar on Christmas carolers. It's a film that you can enjoy even outside of Halloween.

7 Comfort Films
no one tagged me but I do what I want
1. The Cameraman (1928)
Tumblr media
I find comfort in all of Buster Keaton's silent filmography, but this film is a beautiful, artful masterpiece. You get some fantastic stuntwork, some hilarious gags, and most of all, you get Buster Keaton as the underdog you can't help but root for. His performance is hilarious yet also heart wrenching. He was vastly underrated at the peak of his career but has proved to be very much ahead of his time.
2. Pride and Prejudice (2005)
Tumblr media
Mathew McFayden's Darcy is my favorite. He's a perfect balance of awkward and grumpy which makes him incredibly relatable. The cast is amazing, the cinematography is gorgeous, and the story and dialogues are hilarious. Jane Austen would approve.
3. To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar (1995)
Tumblr media
The 90s were a long ass time ago. The actors (having some macho action films under their belts) took their roles seriously and didn't play them like a joke. It ends up being a surprisingly uplifting film about self-love and not being afraid to show the world who you are. This film is campy and cheesy as hell but it has heart and humor and I still love it as much as I did when I was 13.
4. Better Off Dead (1985)
Tumblr media
This is the best movie out of the 80s. Lane is suicidal after getting dumped for the Captain of his high school Ski team (that's not a real thing anywhere, right?). He finds friendship with the unfortunate French foreign exchange student Monique who is stuck living with his awful neighbor Ricky and throughout the course of this incredibly quotable ridiculous movie, he gains his confidence to take on the Captain of the Ski team and possibly win his ex back.
5. Kadhalum Kadandhu Pogum (2016)
Tumblr media
Vijay Sethupathi is incredible in whatever role he's in and Kathir is my absolute favorite. I wish I had the confidence to be as mouthy as he is. It's a sweet and hilarious film that I have seen so many times I've lost count.
6. Ever After (1998)
Tumblr media
A retelling of the classic Cinderella - one in which the lead doesn't need to be saved - is perfect. It's funny and dramatic. It's got beautiful costumes and sets. Leonardo da Vinci is the fairy godmother. Angelica Huston is a divine treat as the wicked stepmother who is as much human as she is awful.
7. Kadhalan (1994)
Tumblr media
Honestly, I could throw a dart at Prabhu Deva's filmography and find comfort in whatever I watch. As long as he gets to do what he does best - dance - I am going to have a good time. Kadhalan is iconic Prabhu Deva, it's soundtrack is infectious, the dance sequences are some of my favorites ("Kadhalikum Pennin" is top) and Prabhu Deva and Nagma are absolutely adorable together.

Morticia Addams: Wife, Mother and Queen of Darkness
By Missy Dawn
Tumblr media
The first incarnation of Morticia Addams during the 1930's in Charles Addams' comic strip in the New Yorker. Photo: Addams Family Wiki
"The real head of the family ... low-voiced, incisive and subtle, smiles are rare ... ruined beauty ... contemptuous and original and with fierce family loyalty ... even in disposition, muted, witty, sometimes deadly ... given to low-keyed rhapsodies about her garden of deadly nightshade, henbane and dwarf's hair."
- Charles Addams on Morticia
Dark, quirky and brimming with smoldering sexuality, Morticia Addams was ahead of her time. When she arrived as a character on television during the 1960's, Morticia stood out among the other TV moms. Her gothic appearance, casual weirdness as well as her sensuality were in direct contrast to the usually perfectly coiffed, cheerful, compliant TV mom.
Morticia Addams was born in the mind of cartoonist Charles Addams during the 1930's. The Addams Family began as characters in a series of one-panel comic strips published in The New Yorker. None of the characters had names until Charles Addams adapted his comic strip for television in 1964.
Morticia, nee Frump, is descended from witches. One of her many talents is "smoking" - causing smoke to rise from beneath her - which Gomez found quite amusing.
Tumblr media
Morticia engages in conventional interests with a macabre and eccentric twist. She loves caring for her pet, a carnivorous plant named Cleopatra, an "African Strangler," whose favorite meal is hamburgers. Over the years and in more than one incarnation, Morticia demonstrates an interest in knitting sweaters with three arms. She also loves roses with their buds cut off, leaving only the thorny stems.
Morticia shows an appreciation for music, playing the Japanese Shamisen. She also enjoys speaking French to her husband.
Tumblr media
In both movies and TV, Morticia is a woman who isn't adverse to open displays of affection. When Gomez covers her arms with kisses, she openly enjoys it. She also is a woman who isn't afraid to express her wants and needs to her husband. She tells Gomez: "Last night you were unhinged. You were like some desperate, howling demon. You frightened me. Do it again." She also tells Gomez to stop torturing himself - that it was her job.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Morticia and Gomez have an equal partnership and would be considered supportive parents. They attend their children's school events. Morticia casually displays her wonderfully macabre sensibilities. She scowls as she watches her son, Pugsley, perform the cheerful tune, "Getting to Know You" with his class.
When they attend a parent/teacher night, Wednesday's teacher expresses concern about her class project. The teacher shows Morticia the bulletin board which displays the students' projects. The project theme is"Our Heroes." One student wrote about the US President and another wrote about journalist Jane Pauley, to which Morticia replies, "Have you spoken to her parents?"
The teacher shows Morticia Wednesday's project, about an infamous ancester, Great-Aunt Calpernia Addams. Morticia responds with a description of Calpernia's accomplishments:
"She was burned as a witch in 1706. They say she danced naked in the town square and enslaved a minister ... but don't worry. We've told Wednesday college first."
Morticia and Gomez believe in honest parenting. When asked how babies are made, Wednesday says, "Our parents had sex."

Morticia also shows a strong sense of family values and loyalty, standing by her husband and his family, especially when Uncle Fester returns home after being lost for many years in the Bermuda Triangle.
Morticia always saves time for Gomez whether it's a stroll through the cemetery or a spontaneous tango in the living room.
Morticia also isn't afraid to ask for time for herself. She expresses a desire to Gomez to be able to make more time to "seek out the dark forces and join their hellish crusade."
Morticia Addams would appear in many different types of media from comic strips to TV to movies, theater and a recent animated film. She's been portrayed by many different actresses, most notably, Carolyn Jones on the 60's TV show and Angelica Huston in the films, "The Addams Family" and"Addams Family Values." She also inspired the creation of gothic icons Vampira and Elvira.
Who could ever forget Morticia Addams? Eccentric, dark, macabre and sexy, her image will last for years to come.

Which version of gomez and morticia addams would you say is the most well known/definitive?60s or 90s?
That's really hard to answer! It really depends on your generation or tastes honestly.
I would say nowadays people remember the 2 feature films more because of the iconic casting and Wednesday definitely became a famous Gothic figure from these movies, establishing her a darker personality. The 90s era really rescued the Addams Family from the grave with TV shows, cartoons and obviously the movies.
If I were to say which Gomez and Morticia is most well known, I would probably say Angelica Huston and Raul Julia, mostly because the actors are more well known I guess? But really this is so freaking hard to answer because Angelica and Jone’s interpretations of Morticia have subtle differences which are both perfect in their own ways. Same with Astin and Julia. The 60s show will always be my favorite adaptation of the Addams because Moritcia and Gomez’s relationship is so enjoyable and vibrant  but the 60s and 90s versions are both definitive in my book haha I love them.
This is sooo fucking hard to answer sorry for not giving a conclusive opinion. If anyone else would like to share their thoughts feel free to do so.

The inherent queerness the Addams family is probably one of my favorite things to discuss. Like, on paper, there's no reason why we, as queer people, should attach ourselves to a heterosexual couple. But by nature of the stories told using Addams family characters, we have attached ourselves to characters who were shunned by society by how they act or are perceived by mainstream society.
That and Angelica Huston is an icon as Morticia and ya.
