When Bucky heads off to join in the war effort, left behind is the woman he intends to make his wife.

The automobile blared its horn as it barreled past her, a warning to the woman before its wheels splashed the puddle of water left by the morning showers into her well-shined shoes. A glance up was spared through her tumble of loose curls for the offending vehicle's retreating form before she resumed trudging along, weaving her body through the flow of people pushing the other way. Her feet now squelched as the after work crowd bustled to return home. She however, headed towards the outskirts of the city, to that spot beneath the lamppost that overlooked the harbor—the place Bucky first kissed her. The place she had watched his battalion ship out from. And now, the place where she allowed herself to collapse.

She slid down the pole to sit on the damp concrete. Here, there were few people to skirt around her and those who did were too busy with their own lives to pay mind to the woman sprawled on the corner of the Brooklyn streets. The dull clouds trembled in anticipation of a coming shower and her own eyes welled with similar purpose in mind.

Her fingers pulled at the corners of the little yellow paper that had been collected in her fist the entire way here to shield her from its message. The words were smudged from tears and crumpled from the half dozen times she decided to throw it away and retrieved it yet again.

'Sgt. Barnes killed in action.'

There were other words of condolence. Words of how he went down bravely. Steve even wrote a letter to accompany the official one. It was still folded on her desk at home where it had been sitting the past week and she doubted she would ever have the courage to open it—that would make it real.

If she just waited here, surely he would show up with a charming explanation about the mix up. He was simply missing or just injured and lost in the sea of soldiers. He always showed up eventually even the days they fought and furiously wished he would not.

This is where they met after work. When her long shift at the local café ended he was always waiting with his arms outstretched expectantly and a dopey grin on those beautiful pink lips. Surely she would see that smile again.

Reaching into the front of her dress, she drew out the locket they'd stumbled across in a flea market downtown one day. He'd insisted on taking the most ridiculous picture to fill it with, to capture James Barnes in the natural state. His arms were flung wide, eyed screwed up, nose wrinkled adorably. The black and white did nothing for the rosy hue constantly dusting his cheeks when he was around her and she doubted any amount of voodoo she used on it would conjure him back even once more.

She thought back to the last time she had seen her intended in person, to his last night state-side.

"No, no, no! You can't just wiggle the antennas a little bit and settle on some horrible, scratchy station. You have to be gentle with it. These new radios are sensitive."

Bucky leaned on the kitchen island fiddling with the newfangled radio her parents insisted on getting them for an engagement present while she swirled their pasta sauce around the pot. After a few tweaks and tugs, its singing static settled on the lively jazz station she lived for.

He turned grinning proudly, offering up puckered lips expectantly. She tapped them with the wooden spoon, giggling when his tongue swept out to taste their simmering meal.

"Well, I didn't die," he congratulated after the sample settled in his stomach.

"You're such a sweet liar. Also, Steve did not come over here earlier and make this. And I'm definitely not just reheating it and taking the claim for his work." She grinned provocatively as Bucky barked with laughter.

He walked behind her, wrapping his arms around her apron and burying his face into the sweet junction of her neck. It was nice the see him at home, out of uniform, not worrying constantly about Steve. It was even nicer to have him completely at her disposal. His muscles torso fit just into the curve of her back, hips pressing in above the swell of her rear. The nightlife beyond their doors was just beginning to pick up, but she had every intention of turning in early for the night, though not alone.

"I got you something," he murmured.

"No. You already got me a ring. That enough. Plus, I get you for the rest of my life once you come home. That's more than enough, maybe a little too much to be frank." She spun in his grasp catching his chin between her thumb and the crook of her index finger.

"Didn't cost me anything," he swore, holding up his right hand to prove his point.

"If you brought home another stray cat…" she narrowed her eyes as the tabby strolled past her calves, rubbing its sleek fur against the bare skin as if to back her up.

"You love Angus and he'll keep you company while I'm gone." Bucky leaned to kiss her lips chastely, turning off the stove as he did. "Come on," he was tugging her towards the bedroom.

She felt her stomach knot at the thought of being in there alone with him. They only bought this apartment a week prior and propriety kept them from being alone after certain hours. But with him shipping out tomorrow, she did not give one care what the rest of the world thought—they were too busy fighting a war to worry about her virginity. She was getting as much Bucky time as possible before the dreaded months apart.

Inside the cramped bed quarters that would serve as their shared bedroom post an exchanging of vows was a single writing desk, shoved into the corner without a chair to sit in. The bed squeaked when one even looked at it wrong and the paisley wallpaper desperately needed to be torn away and replaced by an elegant neutral paint job.

Bucky swept something off the navy duvet and fiddled with it a few seconds before holding out his open palm. It was a cut out round picture of him.

"For your locket," he explained. "So you don't forget what your fiancé looks like."

Her hands floated to her mouth, masking a startled gasp. Eyes welling up in appreciation, she carefully plucked up the photograph and inserted the picture into the locket, letting it slip back beneath her dress to rest right beside her heart, where Bucky resided anyway.

"I love it," she whispered. "I love you."

He opened his mouth, always ready with a doting comment, but she stopped him by pressing her mouth over his. Eons away from their earlier kiss, this one had blood rushing to every spare corner of her body and settling in a place just south of where any decent girl should permit.

His kiss was chaste, familiar, and not enough. He had promised her a forever and tonight she intended to withdraw as much from the account as he allowed. Her tongue slid out, tasting his lips, slipping into an only somewhat hesitant mouth. She felt his eyelashes on her cheeks as they fluttered open in curiosity. He exhaled, breathing her in directly, hands shifting to her face to frame the moment like its own damn picture.

Each of her advances was accepted in stride. When her hand fisted strands of his dark hair between it, his returned the favor, still entirely too gentle. Her teeth caught at his bottom lip, a daring move she had only performed once before and on accident because he had startled her by kissing her mid laugh. But she remembered the reaction it had elicited from him in that diner with only the low lighting to disguise the darkness that had pooled in his eyes from other innocent patrons; tonight she was leaving their ranks and rising still to heights she had only ever reached by her own hand.

His breathed staggered out a staccato beat, his touch fluid and lyrical along her back as he sought out her yellow light, any faint sign that this was not her intention. The base of her spine served as neutral territory as he reclaimed his mouth and closed his eyes as if to conceal his thoughts behind them.

"We've waited this long," he mumbled. Only slivers of blue appeared when he met her gaze, contrasted by the red heat settling in his cheeks; these telltales prevented her from allowing a single denial to sway her.

"You're going to a different continent."

"I'm going to come home, darling. Sex now will just feel like goodbye and I know I'm gonna see you again." He attempted to place a placating kiss to her forehead but it burned clear through her senses and wrapped itself around her heart so the already soaring pace reached embarrassing levels.

"Hello," she whispered, pressing her lips to his clean shaven jaw. She felt him grin and his soft, sweet laugh bubbled to fill the room.

"That's not what I meant. I want to wait. Christ, don't do that." She had migrated south, flocking to his throat to suck a mark for his commanding officers to see tomorrow. She hummed, nosing the collar of his shirt further down for still more skin access. "I'm serious. This isn't me trying to be a gentleman. I'm not. God, I'm not, especially not with you. I want everything that is you. And you're beautiful, so goddamn beautiful and offering yourself up. Will you wait for me to come home?"

"I don't know. The sex was kind of a deal breaker."

"You're so mean to me," he grumbled, head falling to her shoulder. "I just want something to look forward to. I know that's stupid and cheesy and…"

She shushed him with a kiss to his hair. "It's you, Bucky. I love you for your heart. Of course I'll wait. Don't expect my letters to be clean, though. If you're leaving me for months on end, they are going to be my outlet. Seriously, stop smiling like that, you can't read them around other people."

"And that's why I love you. Can I stay, though? I have no arguments against sharing a bed."

"If you do the dishes when we finish."

"Considering you slaved away over that hot stove for hours on end to cook me a homemade dinner, I think I can."

"The sarcasm is pushing it a little, Buck."

His eyes sparkled, his laugh danced and his hug consumed her.

When she looked into the photo, nothing had changed. He was a few blocks over hard at work, her heart was whole and the only fault on the horizon was probably his stinky socks hidden somewhere she could never quite seem to find.

But she could wait as long as she wanted and he would not return. He rested inside her heart, but his no longer beat. Bucky left his own mark on her, though it was not one outsiders could see. And as the skies thundered away, she knew that when the first raindrop fell, she would fall apart along with it.
