Sketchbook Practice : Insects

With the long summer nights in the northern hemisphere giving us lots of extra sunshine at the moment I've been trying to put that time to constructive use. I've got a habit of always being busy, always trying to finish what often seems like a never ending to do list. This often means that I forget to create for my own enjoyment. This doesn't mean I don't enjoy running my little illustration business. But it doesn't always allow for creating in a way thats relaxing and free of purpose.

So I’ve rejigged my daily routine to make it balanced and healthier. The days I'm working on my illustration business I have work hours blocked out to prevent me from mindlessly working away in to the night hours and feeling rubbish the next day. I have also gave myself space for being creative for myself. I get my sketchbooks, paints and pencils out. Then I create whatever on my mind to make. Over the last week thats been bugs!

What shall I paint? I have been itching to do some fun little project just for the fun. It won’t end up on my wall, I won’t wear it - it’s purely for the joy of creating and playing with color. ⚜️ Quarantine is getting on my last nerve! Even my very favorite things in quantity can get to be too much! Help! I need to play! I’ve also been dealing with some back pain lately and so I was not quite ready to bend over my loom to get her warped up for a new project. So I pulled out paint and paper to play. ⚜️ I have a fine art degree, but that doesn’t mean I always know what to paint... and I have fallen in love with the work of @lisabakerart because she is a color genius! And these abstract shapes lend themselves to all kinds of fun and funky happy accidents that are really wonderful... (when she does it). ⚜️ So, as a creative exercise, I pulled up one of my favorites in her instagram feed. I played with the colors and shapes and even the placement that she did - and then added a bit of charcoal and prismacolor pencils to it. It was great fun! I loved being able to create without thinking too much or too hard about what to create. And while it is still much less textured and interesting than hers, it does have its own charm. Naturally I’m not going to become a Lisa Baker clone, but she is doing a bang up job with her work and I freely admit that I am a fan! 🧡❤️💜 ⚜️ Now... next time I pick up the paint brush... what shall I paint? Oh, THaT old question! LOL! I’ll just pick my favorite colors and play.
