ATSV Fun Fact!! - Mumbattan Cultural Details
Gayatri & Inspector Singh follow the Sikh Religion
Tumblr media
Have you ever heard of Punjabi Sikhs?
If you don't know - Sikhism is a religion that originates in northern India, specifically Punjab.
The turban Gayatri's father wears - along with his last name 'Singh' implies that her father is most likely a Punjabi Sikh.
I notice this the first time watching ATSV and was like 'wow that's so cool :)'
It only hit me today that 'Oh wait I don't think a lot of people know about this very-specific, rarely-mentioned religion maybe i should say something,'
And because I LOVE yelling about world culture, LET'S GO!!!
[a SHORT essay where I explain the basics of Sikhism, a religion built on equality and justice. And details in The Singhs design, and exactly why Sikh Representation matters]
So What's Sikhism about?
Often mistaken for Muslims - Sikhs are actually a non-Abrahamic religion, with 20 million followers worldwide.
But even with so many visible practicing members, most people know very very little about this beautiful religion!
Tumblr media
Sikhs believe in equality and unity - and defending the oppressed. Their book of faith, The Guru Granth Sahib Ji, is called 'Guru' for a reason - Sikhs see the book as not just a code of conduct, but as a living, breathing teacher for every practicioner;
From Wikipedia on Guru Granth Sahib: Sikhs since then [1708] have accepted the Guru Granth Sahib, the sacred scripture, as their eternal-living guru, as the embodiment of the ten Sikh Gurus, the highest religious and spiritual guide for Sikhs. It plays a central role in guiding the Sikh's way of life.
The Guru Granth Sahib is the spiritual leader of Sikhism, and it's treated as such.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
That's why in Gurdwaras - their place of worship - it's treated as such, being clothed and held in ornate structure, constantly fanned throughout it's readings (the fan you can see in the left picture).
They believe that by following the Guru Granth Sahib Ji, they can cultivate compassion, peace, and harmony in their communities, while diminishing 'Mara' - concepts like hatred or violence.
Sikhs believe that every Sikh should revere themselves as champions of unity. And because of this many Sikhs have the same last name -
Kaur for women (Meaning Princess) and Singh for men (Meaning Lion).
Having the same last name also does away with the Indian caste system, making it another point of equality.
In ATSV Gayatri last name is Singh. However from my understanding, her name would most likely be Gayatri Kaur in reality.
I think they kept her last name as Singh as a deliberate choice to keep her initials as GS, like Gwen Stacy.
So is Gayatri Sikh?
Tumblr media
Maybe - most likely.
But we can't be sure. Mainly because of her hair.
Gayatri has a short bob haircut, and while that might not seem like it matters, it does!
In Sikhism there are the '5K's - different aspects Sikhs wear to show their faith.
Tumblr media
Notice the first one?
'Kesh' is the practice of leaving ones hair completely uncut. That's why you may see a lot of Sikh men with long, long beards!
Tumblr media
And hence, the large turbans.
It's done as respect for God's creation - leaving it unaltered.
[Fun Fact! - Rastafarians, a Jamaican religion, also don't cut their hair for this reason. Think Bob Marley. Rastas call God - Jah]
So, Gayatri having short hair means she doesn't keep Kesh.
However, Sikh is a super accepting and open religion, and it's main focus is on acceptance of difference, not conformity - so she could entirely follow the faith without doing all of any of the 5Ks.
Also, if you're curious about the steel sword K - Kirpan, yes that's a thing!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sikhs of all genders are encouraged to carry a small ceremonial blade with them.
Instead it's a symbol of the commitment to fighting for what's right - and defending those who cannot defend themselves.
A Kirpan can ONLY be used to defend the life of yourself or others, which is incredibly rare.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Why is this all so rad, cool, and important?
If you haven't noticed by now, Sikhism is a religion driven by justice. Not just in theory, but in really life as well.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
That's why you may see many Sikh police officers and politicians, even here in the West. Most of them wearing the emblem on their turbans.
In fact, Canada has SO MANY Sikh politicians, that in 2019 they elected 18 of them.
For centuries Sikhs have been dedicated to justice, and developing systems of support, whether that be political involvement or feeding those in need.
The biggest Gurdwara (a place of Sikh worship) The Golden Temple feeds over 100,000 people A DAY.
For FREE.
It's a practice called Langar. A communal meal anyone can enjoy. And of course, Langar food is vegetarian.
Making Inspector Singh a Sikh - and showing him saving people and being warm to his daughter on screen is great representation for a community so often overlooked! Despite the fact they are over 20 million practicing Sikhs.
It's a great detail for Indian and Punjabi representation in specific. It accurate shows their beliefs and commitment towards helping others, no matter the cost.
And from what we can tell, this choice came later in development. We know this because ALL of his concept art shows him with a turban, not keeping Kesh.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It seems like someone later on down the line said 'Wait if his name is Singh I think he's Sikh and if he's Sikh then we're gonna have to redesign him and make that obvious oops'.
That, dear audience, is why you always have an Anthropologist in the writing room. Or some amateur anthropologist like me :)
-------------
Tumblr media
I hope you enjoyed reading this, I really enjoyed writing it!! Sikhism is one of my favorite religions and if you have never heard anything from the Guru Granth Sahib I HIGHLY recommend it, it's very optimistic and compassionate. Sikhnet(.)com is also a great resource!
I have no idea if this will pique anyone's interest, but I hardly ever see Sikhs reflected in media and I know many many people may confuse them with Muslim, especially since many women Sikhs keep kesh and cover their hair as well.
But if you ever wanted to know the difference, here it is! If you read this far, thank you SO MUCH. And if you're a Sikh and reading this, I LOVE YOU SO MUCH.
As usual, here's a photo of Hobie for your travels.

The point of Into The Spiderverse is that anyone could be Spider-Man. It was the whole point of the ending speech. And Across The Spiderverse continues this theme perfectly.
The second Miguel started talking about things you need to be Spider-Man, things you have to do, patterns you have to follow, I knew he and everyone going along with this was wrong. I understand why they think this way but they’re wrong.
That miles wasn’t supposed to be a spider at all is so perfect for this. Because when you strip back all the standards and rules it does MATTER. They’re too in their own heads about it. Anyone can be Spider-Man, they just have to rise to the occasion.
And following these rules over that is where they went wrong.

Jess and Hobie: their defining strengths + their weaknesses
I had a thought about Hobie while I was writing, have been thinking about Jess for a while and then this post about Miguel came out and it made me kind of want to yap. I'll only talk about Hobie and Jessica here because I'm biased + Peter & Gwen have been talked about a lot + I linked a post about Miguel + Miles & Pav have simpler, more obvious flaws that basically come down to youthful naivety.
I also find it really interesting that their flaws are basically opposites, Hobie's comes from "inconsistency" whilst Jessica's comes from stubbornness. And again, both these flaws come from their greatest strengths.
TL;dr
Jess' defining strength is her resolve when it comes to fighting for what's right and tussling with destiny but it causes her to have a one-track mind, even if it comes to dedicating herself to something wrong (from being misguided).
Hobie's defining strength is his optimism (e.g. anarcho-communism) but the extreme difficulty of pursuing those ideals and the struggle against systems can bring that optimism to a breaking point, causing him to be inconsistent or, more directly, to give up.
Tumblr media
I think people forget that Jessica's pregnancy is by design and not just a 'feature' of Jessica Drew as a character. She was deliberately chosen to be represented in this stage of her life and I think it is so important to her character, even if it's not in the traditional way that pregnancy is typically portrayed as in media.
I think her pregnancy shows the kind of person she is: most obviously, it's cold, hard evidence that she's a bamf who takes care of spidey business even while pregnant.
More importantly to me, though, there's an implication that, as her universe's one and only spidey, she has been the one to save the day and been the change she wishes to seek, effectively enough that she feels comfortable bringing a baby into the world.
Unlike someone like Peter, she does not make the choice between bringing her child to work with her or leaving them behind. She just has to do what she needs to do to make sure her kid is safe, there's no failing for her. During her pregnancy, it's always going to be a matter of life and death. Jess is well aware and, instead of shying away from action, she's just committed to not making those kinds of mistakes. To get over her losses. She's going to take charge of her own world's destiny as she has always done and she's going to make sure it's good.
Her strong allegiance to Miguel's ideas is her most glaring flaw to us as an audience because A. we're seeing things through Miles' eyes, she's standing in the way of him saving his father and B. we know that Miguel can't be right about canon events - we know they wouldn't make the movies as bleak as that.
Of course, taking a step back from our perspective, it's also a flaw because she is being antagonistic to a teenager as a grown adult. It might make her seem cold and harsh.
However, Jess was the one to vouch for Gwen, to take her in, even though Miguel didn't want her to and they could have left things up to the web of destiny. Jess trusts her own capabilities but she doesn't trust the world to be kind. She doesn't assume Gwen can handle things just because she can, either. On top of being sympathetic, I think her dedication to being the change she wishes to see is why she accepts Gwen as a student; she trusts that a young girl can make the world a better place too, it's not a thing where she wants to micromanage everything. She just wants to know the multiverse is in safe hands. That's her "great responsibility".
The only reason she is following the anti-Miles agenda is because Miles, as far as she and anybody else in-movie knows, is jeopardising the existence of every universe (insidiously via the holes). Maybe, in another position, say, a bright-eyed teen who mainly worried about high school and puppy love, she would be more willing to risk things, to see how it goes.
She's not in that position though. Her world that she felt confident she had the power to keep safe has been made uncertain. One day, it could just go poof, along with her baby, and she wouldn't be able to stop it in the moment. If she makes the right decision now, if she doesn't make a mistake, she can prevent it. It's understandable that she's going to do whatever it takes to prevent anomalies.
What was the canon event chosen to represent her?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Her version of the moment from "The Final Chapter".
It comes from a story that largely focuses on Peter's personal life before spiralling into action to make up for a mistake that has made Aunt May fatally ill. In the panel, Spider-Man is trapped under machinery with the cure - the thing that will absolve the mistake - just out of reach. As the lair is flooded, drowning is imminent.
Against all odds, though, Spider-Man pushes past what should have killed him and rises to the occasion, with the thoughts of saving Aunt May and refusing to have a repeat of Uncle Ben.
Tumblr media
"I won't fail you. No matter what - I won't fail."
Jess has had to handle her own fate as well as her world's. Now that the multiverse is involved, it's not going to stop at her own universe. She has to stop this. She won't fail. As per the dialogue between her and Gwen in ATSV, she's made a mistake before (by getting too close to someone) but she tells Gwen "I got over it". Sounds so savage in the moment but she still gives Gwen a chance to make her own situation right before letting her get kicked off the team. Helping Gwen in spite of the anomaly would be a mistake if she couldn't handle this.
And when the Spot gets away and Miles enters the picture? The gloves come off. It's tempting fate at that point. Jess' no mistakes mindset pushes her to even prepare to roll up on a teenager.*
Her greatest strength is her resolve - I mean, hell, she doesn't let even pregnancy slow her down when it comes to saving the world - but it causes her to be stubborn and leads her down a misguided path.
*By the end of the film, she seems to be questioning Miguel's method, though. On top of the fact that BTSV is obviously going to end on a good note, I think Jess' fight against destiny is going to have her come around in the end as Miles is doing the same thing.
Onto Hobie:
I luv luv luv Hobie as much as everyone else, he's definitely my favourite but I feel he has his flaws too (which tend to make me love my faves more lol).
In fact, I think he says what they are when we first meet him, though they are veiled as jokes.
I find that the audience tends to position him as a perfect distillation of anarcho-communism at its best. I think the teen spideys see him in a similar light; they see him as effortlessly cool & charismatic, a wise mentor figure ("use your palms" + his play fighting with Pavitr featured him taking on the stance of a boxing trainer as Pavitr tried to punch his palms) but he's not like the adult adults - he's relatable, he's cool, he's anarchist, he's not always on their case like Jess and Miguel.
He neither calls himself a hero nor a role model... but he is the perfect hero and role model, right? He's the best! He's the only one who's looking out for Miles and, when Miles is getting chased down by the entire society, what does he do?
He... quits.
Wouldn't that perfect hero we all believe him to be swoop in with his cape, know exactly what to do and save Miles, the underdog? He can't have possibly known Miles would manage against the society and, if he knew it was possible, then why wouldn't he lend a hand? He didn't drop off the watch in Miles' dimension, he gave one to his bestie, Gwen, likely in the scenario that she wanted to quit or got booted because 'it [didn't] work out'.**
I think Hobie's major flaw is his lack of consistency, as he famously said himself.
He has a strong moral code - he believes in the right things for the right reasons... but communism and anarchy are pretty much impossible to properly/entirely employ in a system that is consumerist, capitalist and authoritarian. He riots, he fights, but it's never over. London isn't free. In my experience, people with strong moral compasses tend to have issues with themselves because they hold others to higher standards than most and hold themselves to even higher and impossible standards (think Diane from Bojack Horseman).
One of the first comic panels I encountered of Hobie was him getting real with Captain Anarchy about losing morale because, despite killing President Ozzy Osborne, the face of fascism in his dystopia, nothing changes. He wasn't able to save the world like a hero in a movie or like a proper role model. He 'failed'. When you give your everything and nothing changes, no matter how optimistic, clever or read-up on theory you are, it can be hard to keep going.
And what is chosen as his defining canon event?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
His version of Spider-Man quitting in "Spider-Man No More". Rather than being fed up with the world antagonising him as 616 is, Hobie is done with an antagonistic world.
The Hobie/Spider-Punk that has been built up externally, as far as I understand, would never give up. He'd keep raging forever and ever because that's the cool thing to do, because it's the heroic thing to do - because it's the right thing to do.
But under the mask, he's just a teenager, imperfect as any other.
He's still a Spider-Man too. Before the bite, he was another lanky black boy in racist-af, peak National Front, send-the-blacks-and-the-Asians-back, '70s England. He's a nerd, as evidenced by his ability to build such a high-tech watch, especially as a teenager who wouldn't have had access to anything like it until joining the society, meaning he had to pick it up quick. And I'm to think he didn't have any Flash-esque characters in his life? "Come out of it."
As Spider-Man with the mask on, he yells to the rooftops; as Hobie with the mask off, he mumbles and whispers. Sure he looks cool now but people don't tend to come out of the womb as Spider-Punk. On top of that, he's still so young and surely has plenty of room to grow.
I believe he joined the society in earnest, optimistic that he could help the multiverse but eventually reached his limits with actively facilitating death and trauma, with saving the multiverse not meaning freedom in his own universe, with being shackled to the web of destiny. I'm not convinced he made the watch in one day; I think he had been planning on quitting for some time and was waiting for the right moment (as he also wanted to support Gwen because friendship is important to him). That's why he tries to dissuade Miles from joining but, when he does leave, he doesn't go out in a riot, he doesn't even leave knowing that Miles has people on his side other than him. Hobie just quits.
I think his greatest strength is his optimism (his anarcho-communism & adamance about "love, joy and freedom" as per the un-permitted performance art pieces in his montage) but he's smart and he's been through shit - he isn't naive like Pavitr or Miles - the great heights of that optimism lead to intensely low lows.
**(I don't really see why or how he would have been able to predict everything that happened in the chase. I know that the watch is set to 1610 but if Hobie believed Miles would make it out of 928 and get back to 1610, would that not be things 'working out'? Or did he predict that he would get to the go-home machine but was the only one who considered that he would be sent to the place his spider came from. Why? And why wouldn't he set the watch to 42 if he knew Miles wouldn't be in 1610? I feel like the 1610 on the interface is just there to be there and that Hobie gave Gwen the watch so she could have the freedom to leave 65 if she wanted to, in the event that she quit the society because they captured Miles or because Miguel kicked her out as Jess kept warning.)

i know this has been said tons of times already in different ways but,
i just love the way Miguel and the Spider Society forcing everyone to follow the “canon” and telling Miles that he is not allowed to change the predestined story because “everyone else had to go through it” is an excellent metaphor for older generations re-enforcing to younger generations the ideology that the suffering they have to go through of whatever kind is normal and expected.
it’s like that saying “if i had to grow through hell, so do you.” but the thing is, Spiderman is the hero who is typically the one saying, “i’ll make sure you never go through hell like i did.” it’s such a cool way to show the conflict and disconnect between the two ideologies that Miles struggles with in the film
just….like the fact that Miguel and Jessica sort of symbolize the kind of parents who worked their asses off to make sure the world you live in will be better than theirs then feel upset and betrayed when their child who has the privilege to live a life they might have desired in the kid’s age. definitely didn’t find any relatability to that aha
I just love that it’s the fact that Spiderman’s story of losing Uncle Ben, losing the police chief, losing Gwen, are things Miles is told he cannot fight (the whole parallel between being told life = suffering and desiring a happier outcome won’t work). BUT THEN, Miles says fuck that! he says “no, why should i have to put up with that when i know i can change it!” and just 🫠
idk i love this movie and i hope this makes sense

I’m in love with the fact that Gwen looks absolutely devastated post-Guggenheim assemble where she successfully saves the people in the art museum and receives a nod of affirmation from Jess. The victory and the validation isn’t on her mind. I love the drums disappearing and leaving a ringing trill of her synth before she collapses on the floor in pain and exhaustion.
The drums are associated with intense focus and intense emotional turmoil. This is set up by the opening scene where Gwen “beats her feelings with sticks” while drumming. The drums represent the momentary ability to express her pent up emotions through action. So when the drums leave and the synth rings, musically, her adrenaline has run out. Spider-Woman did what she needed to do and Gwen Stacy is left. The synth extends to the next scene where she faces her father but it takes a soft, wavering tune. There are no drums to back it up. She is not spider-woman right now, she is Gwen and she needs her father to understand.
The drum returns like a heartbeat when she reveals herself and it goes badly. She’s Gwen but she’s Spider-Woman and the lines between the two blur. Her dad’s rejection of that part of her is as much a rejection of her, emphasised by the fact that in the background, the paint is dripping down in rapidly changing colours, reflecting her turmoil.
I love that Gwen looks devastated because, right from the start, we’re made so brutally aware of the suffering she goes through and has gone through. And this informs every interaction she has with miles - how he makes her feel okay. How when she’s Spider-Gwen with him, she’s inspired. So much depth added to her character with just one expression. I love this movie.

Okay, quick thing about ATSV to counter some of the opinions I've seen floating around on here:
There are plenty of valid criticisms to be made of Miguel in this movie, but at no point does he try to kill Miles. He has claws, and in his very first fight scene we see him take Vulture's wing clean off with them. Later, we see them go right through the metal of that train/shuttle thing Miles was running up. He got close enough to use them on Miles on multiple occasions and did not. He literally had his hands on Miles' throat at one point; it would have been the easiest thing in the world to just slit his throat then and there.
If we’re going with comic canon, then the claws are out by default and it takes concentration to retract them, so not only was he not trying to kill Miles, he was actively concentrating on non-lethal strikes.
TL;DR: If Miguel wanted Miles dead, Miles would be dead. Chew him out for his unnecessarily rigid worldview and extreme methods all you like, but he's not a child murderer.

so, then, what IS up with miguel o’hara’s moral backbone?
lol sorry if y’all’re sick of my 2099 soapboxing. anyways.
while i understand where the reading of “miguel is a morally bankrupt evil scientist and his spider-man is just a violent shitheel” comes from, i just... really can’t ever get behind it, based on what we see in the text of SM2099 v1 (1992-1996) itself.
like, don’t get me wrong-- from our first introduction to the guy, we very quickly learn that he has been a cog in the machine for one of the 2099 imprint’s Big Bads, the ruthless megacorporation in charge of the United States’ East coast: Alchemax.
..but. like.
the whole point of his origin story is changing that. the initial catalyst for his Spidering--getting roofied by Tyler when he tries to quit his job--would not have happened if he had no moral compass to speak of.
narratively, it’s less that miguel himself is changed, after he gets his powers, but that his perception of the world has changed.
just-- just bear with me, yeah?
see, for a lot of his life, miguel was a perfect cog in a shitty machine, and he did everything he was expected to without even thinking to stray from the path set down for him by his biological father and by alchemax overall.
and, then, suddenly, that’s all ripped from him in an instant. and miguel’s left floundering in the water.
he’s no longer on the winning team-- more than that, he realizes that he probably never even was on the right side of things, to begin with.
miguel o’hara’s most-quoted line is his response to the infamous “great power,” bit: Great responsibility? No. With great power comes great guilt.
he’s repressed, and he’s a hypocrite, but a guy can only turn a blind eye so far when something he knows is wrong is happening right in front of his face.
as soon as it’s even suggested to him, he immediately steps out of line and tries to put his foot down on absolutely not using a human test subject for his personal spider-man project. when stone brushes him off and makes them go through with human testing anyways, and then the subject dies, miguel doesn’t hesitate to turn up his nose and walk out right then and there on the spot.
his reward for it, of course, is an ice-cold dose of Reality.
from there, his blinders get pulled harshly off his face, and mig realizes that he really doesn’t want to keep being the person that he has been. his life has been wasted sitting idly by and letting bad things happen because all he knows is helpless compliance, right up until he goes and gets himself The Fly’ed into spider-man.
and once that happens, and he Realizes it, he starts to fight back.
that’s how the run is kick-started, in the very first three issues!
the first ten issues of spider-man 2099 (1992) follow miguel stumbling from a very sheltered life, having been thrust head-first into navigating a world that is not only deeply, deeply unjust, but also wants him very, very dead.
he don’t got a dead uncle to motivate him! all he’s got it his own fear and an inner desire to use his new abilities to try and make the world a better place.
hell, the first time he put on the costume, ol’ miggy boy wasn’t even doing so for the purpose of becoming a superhero in his off-time-- it was just an old spare in his closet that he threw on in a desperate attempt to Not Fucking Die as a bounty hunter tracked him to his home.
it’s only later on, after he’s had time for it all to sink in, that miguel realizes that he can actually meaningfully help the people who had been cast aside by the same society that had previously lifted him up above them.
as much as he whines and bitches and moans about it, he never seriously considers throwing in the towel and hanging up the costume for good. he may hate what has happened to him, but he never once seems to hate what he can now do with his powers, vis-à-vis challenging injustice.
mig’s often stuck between a rock and a hard place, what with the kind of world he lives in. it’s why he don’t work well when he’s stranded away from his dimension. peter can get his villains locked up just fine and dandy, but miguel’s world isn’t like ours like that. it’s brutal and it’s very very much established across the imprint that earth-928 (marvel 2099) is a kill-or-be-killed place to live.
despite how people harp on him not having a no-kill rule, miguel honestly hasn’t even killed enough people to count on one hand; the first was completely by accident, even, and the second told him to his face that if spider-man let him live he’d just keep being a cannibal gang-boss because no one else ever has or would try to oppose him.
is killing people the answer? not if you have any other option. but. mig ain’t a friendly neighborhood superhero. he’s just doing what he thinks is right in the moment while scared absolutely shitless for his life most of the time.
now, i don’t mean to defend his every action--miguel o’hara isn’t a saint, and, good god, but he’s made some questionable choices--but. at the end of the day, he’s still shown throughout the run to be trying to be better.
and, i dunno. maybe i’m just a sentimental little sap, but a story about somebody who finally “wakes up” and struggles to build a life worth being proud of after years of having shut down from heavy early-life trauma? that hits, man.
hits real close to home, to be honest. learning to Live after so long simply Surviving is fuckin’ hard, man.

Black Solidarity in Across the Spider-Verse.   Of all the meta analysis of this movie messages and layers to it.  This is by far one of my top favorite video on Across the Spderverse in regards to focusing on the more Black perspectives of this great movie themes and messages. Especially on the subject of Black solidarity going on between Hobie and Margo not even being super subtle with  it, with them clearly helping out Miles when he seriously needed it the most.   Especially with Margo who went against Miguel orders and didn’t try to stopped Miles when she had the chance to, also I knew Hobie was a real one from the very beginning with how he  that super helpful advice to Miles on using his palms instead of his finger tip when it comes to his electric venom abilities  or him clearly seeing Spider-Society flaws and not being down with it from the start.

I hate that now everyone is theorizing who has to die to replace Miles' father to keep the canon. "Well his mom did this and this" or "Gwen said this" or "Peter B. blah blah blah blah." NO. He's gonna save his father, he's gonna defeat the spot, and he's gonna be okay. You have basically missed the entire plot of ATSV if you are theorizing who's gonna die in the next movie.

If I see one more ‘Miguel is racist ’ thing or ‘Miguel is a metaphor for *insert racist/homophobic/transphobic system*’ I’ll lose it.
He’s not any of those things he’s not even the bad guy. He’s just trying his best in his own, albeit flawed, way to help save everyone. He wants to save people just as much as miles. He doesn’t hate miles either he just doesn’t want miles to destroy the whole multiverse. (Not saying miles is a bad guy either he’s not he’s just a kid who loves his dad and is to scared and stressed to think out what the consequences might be)
Y’all just can’t comprehend nuance want to pin all your troubles on the ‘angry latino man’.
also you all are crazy if you can’t understand that the only one who was evil or being mean or wrong on purpose is the spot. But y’all went noooo he’s just a silly little guy like bitch he wants to kill Miles’s dad and everyone else and he wants to hurt miles.
Gwen? Doesn’t want to hurt anyone.
Peter b? Also doesn’t want to hurt anyone.
Jess? Doesn’t want to hurt anyone.
Miguel? Doesn’t want to hurt anyone.
Stop blaming them they are all doing their very best blame the fucking spot all of this is his fault you guys just need a scape goat because you can’t understand complicated things.

So With Spider-Punk: Arms Race #2 right around the corner: .......I'm gonna say it
Hobie's New Design is Bad.
Incredibly bad. Like 'leave it in the drafts homie' bad. Fuck it, I'm about to start using words I ain't even know I knew - this shit is EGREGIOUS.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It ain't cute.
It's bad. It's ugly, bro. His hair is serving Coral Reef And I'm tired of pretending it's not.
And it feels SO subtly anti-black.
[A very SHORT essay where I basically say: Oh hell naw]
For one I feel like they're stripping Hobie's black features. Or toning them down a LOT.
Even if we aren't counting the blue eyes they gave in him in Issue One.
Now, over time Hobie's looked many different ways - but throughout his runs his features were 100% supposed to be interpreted as black.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And while his newer comic runs tone that down a bit, it still looks natural.
Tumblr media
And his hair has ALWAYS been natural. So much so that it's one of the defining features of movie Hobie as well.
Tumblr media
This.... Isn't that. Not only has his natural hair been shaved and died, but it was done into a style made to DIRECTLY ripoff an already popular WHITE character - Gwen Stacy.
And once again, BLUE EYES???
And it's so bizarre!!!! Cause his design hasn't changed, but it REALLY HAS!! LIKE LOOK-
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is supposed to be the same guy, making the same expression. This is not the same fucking guy.
They have the same brow shape and lip shape and nose, but that's not the same fucking guy and I can't articulate why.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Looking at his profile highlights this way more, especially when putting him next to Movie Hobie.
Notice how ALL of Comic!Hobie's features are RAZOR sharp?
Whereas, Movie!Hobie's features, his features are actually fairly soft.
His nose and lips are curved and soft - even his pronounced brow bone is still curved, DESPITE him having a sharper face shape than Comic!Hobie.
That's because Movie Hobie has Black People Features.
Comic Hobie DOESN'T.
I wish I was joking when I say -
I feel like they're genuinely using Johnny Storms model and coloring it brown.
It's just... too bad not too be.
This redesign is atrocious. It's worse than the Attack on Titan manga.
And from what we can tell - this is a HOBIE SPECIFIC problem. Riri Williams - IronHeart - looks FINE.
Not to be dramatic, but this is very much a disappointment. It's honestly impressive how they managed to fumble the design bag SO EASILY.
Marvel Comics only leases Hobie Brown character to Sony. Hobie is still their IP - they can plunder his SONY design as much as they like, so long as it looks reasonably Not Identical.
And still they decided to do a 180, tone down his black features, unnatural his hair, and give him blue eyes.
Marvel. Pack it up. You're chopped.

the spiderverse movies, especially across the spiderverse, are perfect stories to analyze through a metafictional lens (for context: metafiction is when a story deliberately draws the audience's attention to its status as a story)
it's almost inevitable for a spider-man story set in a multiverse to build commentary on what it means to be a spider-man story. itsv certainly does it, but atsv doubles down on it tenfold.
throughout all of the film we see characters imposing a narrative on miles, telling him not only what to do but also how to present and even think about himself and his place in the world. they want him to distort his story, make it palatable, to conform to the beats and tropes everyone expects from him both as miles morales and as spider-man.
his guidance counselor wants him to be poster boy for the stereotypical american dream "poor child of immigrants pulls himself up by his bootstraps to become a great scientist" narrative
Tumblr media Tumblr media
miguel insists on subjecting every single spider-person to the same traumatic tropes— sorry, "canon events" that (according to his algorithm) define the very nature of a spider-man story. he's like the comics authority of this spider-verse. any divergence miles attempts from the standardized narratives that are thrust upon him is heavily policed and disciplined
both the counselor and miguel are essentially saying the same thing: being who miles is is about sacrifice, and it's about suffering. to prevent that suffering or to acknowledge its absence means erasing his identity respectively as an afrolatino young man and as a superhero
Tumblr media
and he is having none of it. this is not a spider-man narrative, this is his spider-man narrative. he's not going to reduce himself to fit into a nice cookie cutter generic marketable version of his own life
Tumblr media
and in his literal main character moment he graduates from guy who is doomed by the narrative to Guy Who Dooms The Narrative. he's taken control of his own story. bet in the next movie he's gonna make the whole canon theory unravel. bet he's gonna break canon so hard it explodes.

Being Spider-Man isn’t about your trauma or a list of shared experiences. The only thing you need to be Spider-Man is to rise to the occasion. To always, always KEEP GETTING UP!
And it’s so interesting to see Miles be the one to do that while the others are resigned. That he’s the one to remind them.

I think at this point I might as well post my theory.
So where do the glitched out things go?
You know? When stuff starts glitching? Atoms don’t belong and stuff? And not only things, where did Gabriela O’Hara go?
“They cease to exist” I hear you say
“Bullshit” I say back
Physics is a great subject. I failed it in school, but it’s great nonetheless. And one simple rule of physics, the law that even most works of fiction, even fantasy tend to abide is the law of conservation of energy.
Things don’t disappear into nothing.
And there is something that even has been mentioned already in Spiderverse, established that it exists and functions, somewhere where things could go without creating collapses in physics as we know it.
HAMMERSPACE
In case y’all need a refresher on what hammerspace is, here’s a comic from the Wikipedia page for hammerspace that explains it better than I could
Tumblr media
And when was this concept mentioned? Well, at least once, it was mentioned by the most cartoonish character - Peter Porker, aka, Spider-Ham. I don’t remember if he outright called it hammerspace, but he used it most prominently.
And what was his parting gift for Miles?
A GOD DAMN HAMMER THAT CAN FIT INTO HIS POCKET.
“But maybe it’s only Spider-Ham that uses hammerspace, to signify he is a classic cartoon!” Some of you say, thinking you are very smart
“Where do Hobie’s hair go when he wears his mask?” I ask, and none of y’all smarties can answer.
Spiderverse has established that hammerspace is something that, knowingly or not, basically every and any spider-person can access.
So we have a vast space, where things that basically need to be hidden, usually go, and we have things and people glitching out of existence. Isn’t it logical that those two things are connected?
Wouldn’t it be really fucking funny?

miguel o'hara, relationships, & asexuality
i'm back with another character analysis because i can't be normal idk this is a take on miguel being asexual from the perspective of an arosepc aspec person and just discussing him for no particular reason
miguel o'hara is a generally sexualized character, shown constantly over and over again through media, you're often unable to scroll through any social media feed without finding something about miguel's ass or boobs or him half naked. he's incredibly hypersexualized in every aspect. much of this likely stemming from the "latin lover" trope and fetish. [this is not a callout type analysis, not everyone who finds him attractive has a fetish. this is just where i get to say random things because i feel like it for some reason] despite not being shown in any sort of sexual concept, shown anything related to romance, shown interest in romance, or even portrayed having an old relationship, the internet became obsessed with this man. miguel has shown no want or need for relations, romance or sex or not his driving motives, he has romance and sexual concepts forced onto him, not unlike many asexual people. it's one of the reasons that some asexual people may headcanon him as such, and may see themself in the way that he is constantly being sexualized for nothing. yes this is a character, who does not exist, but this aspect that seems made by more fanon parts of the atsv is incredibly relatable all the same. by no means does this headcanon mean that he as a character cannot participate in sex nor romance, asexuality and being aspec is a vast spectrum, some people have likes, dislikes, preferences and so forth. this isn't a headcanon because i might think he's a prude
regardless of whether you think that miguel is asexual, or if he is sex repulsed, allo, or aromantic as well, it can easily be said that having a relationship is not on the table for him. in regards to miguel's mental health, romance or sex is not an option really. while he does need to be taken proper care and get the help he needs, romance is a commitment that him getting into amongst all of this, simply would just not work. his immense anger issues, devastating grief, and unhealed trauma would simply not be good for a romantic or sexual relationship, and it would end up falling apart. rather he needs a kind of care and stability, from friends, maybe a therapist, those he can form a familial bond with over time. he doesn't need a relationship or to care for others, first he needs to learn how to care for himself and take a moment for what he needs rather then what his moral guilt is driving him to do.
as always thank you for reading my incoherent mess of words

//atsv spoilers
Do you ever think about the fact that Gwen, as the only spider-gwen is the only one who hypothetically would not fall for Spider-Man in her universe. And how she falls for a Spider-Man from another universe anyways, possibly making her feel like the Universal Rule that Gwen falls for Spider-Man transcends the borders of multiverses? Like she can’t outrun Fate no matter what? How she feels doomed because she knows “it doesn’t end well”. How she knows this but she falls for Miles anyways, and goes to see him even with knowledge of the consequences. And how these feelings are perfectly encapsulated in the lyrics of the song ‘Mona Lisa’? How Miles’ very existence makes her feel okay, and how he tells her that she’s not doomed, and how later on he comes to symbolise the very resistance of Canon. Because I think about that a lot.
