Fairy Tale Musicals: The Sound of Music (1965), directed by Robert Wise
Read My Fair Lady: A Voice for Change by Marcie Ray before reading the post to understand the full analysis and references brought up.
Tumblr media
Subversion of the Pygmalion Narrative
The romantic relationship between Maria and Georg von Trapp in The Sound of Music has the potential to follow a Pygmalion-esque narrative due to their age, class, and wealth disparities. However, the film subverts this potential by creating a dynamic that appears equal and aspirational. While the real Georg and Maria von Trapp had a significant age gap, the film adaptation lessens this gap, with Christopher Plummer and Julie Andrews portraying characters who are both young-looking and attractive, possibly to make the romance more relatable and appealing to audiences.

The real Maria and Georg von Trapp (left) and the screen version (right).
This adjustment not only mitigates the implications of their differences in status and age but also portrays their relationship as more balanced and mutual. Dreamy dance sequences and romantic songs like "Something Good" further sell the idea of a loving partnership, blurring the lines between employer and employee. Unlike the traditional Pygmalion narrative, Georg is not portrayed as a woman-hating or cold-hearted figure; instead, his facade quickly melts away due to Maria's kindness and warmth.
Tumblr media
Something Good
Similarly, Maria is not depicted as a helpless or submissive character. While she may start as a governess, her journey throughout the film reveals her independence, resilience, and agency. She challenges Georg's views and traditions, most dramatically in the Rowboat scene starting at (01:13:04), ultimately becoming his partner in both love and life.
youtube
This departure from the traditional Pygmalion narrative reinforces the film's themes of empowerment, self-discovery, and the possibility of love transcending societal barriers.
In what ways does the film mark class through music, lighting, costuming, and performance?
The Sound of Music subtly conveys class distinctions through music, lighting, costuming, and performance. Maria's boyish innocence contrasts with the refined sophistication of higher social classes, symbolizing a clash of worlds.
Tumblr media
What differences do you see in how these characters are dressed?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The von Trapp house's elegant design reflects elevated status, while interior scenes reveal internal struggles despite outward wealth. The contrast between vibrant outdoor lighting and dim interiors underscores themes of freedom versus constraint.

Overall, these elements enrich the narrative with depth and complexity, subtly exploring social dynamics.

Femininity and Masculinity
The Sound of Music reimagines notions of femininity and masculinity by juxtaposing Maria's experience in the convent, where she has a supportive community of women, against the narratives of Echo and Narcissus, Eliza and Higgins, and Pygmalion, where women lack female support systems. Maria's journey begins in the convent, challenging traditional patriarchal hierarchies and presenting a world where women support each other. This contrasts sharply with the narratives of Echo, Eliza, and Pygmalion, where women are at the mercy of men for validation or advancement, lacking the camaraderie and solidarity found in the convent.
Maria and Georg's relationship further subverts traditional gender dynamics, as it is characterized by mutual respect and understanding rather than power imbalances. Maria's influence softens Georg's authoritarian demeanor, showcasing the transformative power of femininity. However, her eventual marriage to Georg, portrayed as a means of reforming her resistance to authority, suggests a return to conventional gender norms.
Tumblr media
Despite Maria's initial independence, the film ultimately presents marriage and motherhood as the epitome of happiness for women. Maria's song to Liesel reinforces this idea,
“Gone are you old ideas of life. The old ideas grow dim. Lo and behold you’re someone's wife and you belong to him.” (02:26:57)
youtube
suggesting that belonging to her husband is preferable to her old, free-spirited ideals. This portrayal can be interpreted as a form of "baby" feminism, where female agency is toyed with but ultimately subordinated to traditional gender roles.
Tumblr media
Racial Subtexts within the Film
The film The Sound of Music lacks explicit racial subtexts, as all characters are white and assumed to be of Austrian or German descent. Despite the main antagonist being Nazi Germany, there is no discussion of the persecution faced by Jewish people, Roma people, or other targeted groups. The film focuses on the von Trapp family as victims of Nazism, portraying their escape with little resistance. However, this narrative minimizes the broader reality of the atrocities inflicted on targeted individuals under the Nazi regime.
Tumblr media
By centering whiteness as the normative experience within cultural narratives, the film fosters the idea that idyllic stories like those depicted are only available to white characters, reflecting the limitations of representation within the context of the film's setting and time period.
Character Transformations: Then vs. Now
Character transformations in The Sound of Music held significance both during its release in 1964 and for contemporary audiences. The 1960s, characterized by the rise of second-wave feminism and societal upheaval, audiences looked for positive narratives of personal growth as a source of hope and empowerment. Maria's evolution and ability to be both a free-spirited novice to a nurturing mother resonated with viewers seeking optimism and agency during turbulent times. It gave women watching the movie a feeling that they could be outspoken and still have a thriving personal life.
However, both then and now, the film has faced criticism for its perceived simplicity, overly sweet tone, and adherence to traditional gender roles. While audiences appreciate its charm and musical numbers, some find its romanticized depiction of history and gender dynamics outdated or problematic in light of feminist and contemporary critiques. Maria is still a refreshing, joyful, and quietly rebellious figure to contemporary audiences but her lack of complexity, and honestly it is all characters who lack of moral or personal complexity, leaves something to be desired. The film is still a classic and just as enjoyable to watch again and again.

DISCUSSION QUESTION
1. How do the voices in The Sound of Music shape how we see men and women in the film? Julie Andrews sings her own songs, but Christopher Plummer's singing is dubbed. Think about what we learned from Ray about how voices reflect power in My Fair Lady.
youtube
2. In discussing Fairy Tale Musicals, what aspects of The Sound of Music qualify it for this category, especially considering the absence of a Cinderella moment seen in other musicals like My Fair Lady or Anastasia? Can you identify a particular theme, moment, or narrative within The Sound of Music that distinguishes it in this genre?
3. What is the role of fairy tale narratives like The Sound of Music in representing historical events or broader societal issues? How do these stories balance their feel-good simplicity with the responsibility to engage with more complex realities?
4. How does Maria's character development in The Sound of Music, transitioning from a spirited and independent governess to a wife and mother, intersect with feminist ideals and traditional gender roles?

I was thinking about Roger and how important he is for the one piece world without being alive.
What's your thoughts on him? I don't think I have ever seen you talked that much about him.
It's true, i dont talk much about him, but my overall impression is that: he was the funniest bitch
Become a legend on his field, pissed off the goverment, explored the world, made his nemesis raise your kid, had adventures with his friends, and on his dying breath he inspired a whole new worldwide moment and yelled out 'fuck the goverment' as he went. You dont get more Funny Bitch status than that
And i do believe he saw the world goverment and the mistery of the missing century and all, how fucked up that was and decided that a massive revolution was needed, bc fuck that shit
How you fight authoritarianism? Freedom. How you inspire literally the whole world to fight that cause? 1. You give them an icon 2. You use greed in your favour for the less idealistic ones. And boom The Great Pirate Era was born and at the cost of one dramatic execution. So yeah, he planned it all
Also it fucks me up to this day that Rogers died like 20 years ago. We are still seeing the direct consequences of his time, its very very early days on this era

Honestly, I consider my self "pro-israel" but still very critical about Bibis goverment, specially since fuckers like Gvir ad Smorvtich are in charge. I think that with Hamas finally gone and this fuckers either jailed for good or gone since they are actually hated by the Israeli population rn (The only reason they havent kicked them to kingdom come is because its the middle of a war) a good faith peace plan for both sides can be established with a third party of trust.
This being said, why the fuck do people root for Hamas? Ive seen this so called progressive even calling them 'resistance'. These fuckers are the main cause that palestinians are in the situation they are in. They use all the money they get from aid to try to attack israel, use their own population as shields because they dont care about them and indoctrictnated them to hate since children. Do they really want to leave them opressing Gazans like nothing happened after oct 7th? Because Ive havent seen any goverment willing to do this dirty work because, sadly, Hamas wont reliquinsh their "power" peacefully.
Honestly, in a past I considered my self pro-palestinian and pro-israel, at least publicly, but these loud minority of Hamasinks seemed to have hijacked a movement that started with good intentions. But sadly it appears that this minority is becoming the majority.
Is there anything that can be done to revert this? To alianeate these extremist from the reasonable voices?
"I think that with Hamas finally gone"
You make the assumption that Israel's ongoing genocidal attempt will succeed in eliminating Hamas.
What I think it's doing instead is feeding the fire for many more years of conflict.
"This being said, why the fuck do people root for Hamas? Ive seen this so called progressive even calling them 'resistance'."
If you're talking about (online and offline) Western "leftists," I can think of 3 reasons:
They're treating other countries' politics and conflicts like an abstract, intellectual exercise (at best) or football teams (at worst). As if actual people's lives aren't at stake.
They're falling for propaganda propagated by Hamas and backed by the religious fundamentalists of Iran--who have destroyed their own country and whose morality police murders women left and right; how quickly people have forgotten of Mahsa Amini--as well as their proxies, the Houthis in Yemen and Hezbollah in Lebanon.
They're antisemites and/or authoritarians themselves. Some of those people cheered when Hamas committed atrocities on October 7th. Suffice it to say, calling yourself a progressive does not necessarily make you one.
"I'm not an antisemite, I'm an anti-Zionist!!! Israel should be annihilated!!!"
Ok, answer me this then:
what exactly would happen to Israel's Jewish majority population in that case? Would it be killed? (That's what Hamas wants by the way.)
Would it be driven out? Where would they go?
"a good faith peace plan for both sides can be established with a third party of trust."
The United Nations, the West (the US, the UK, Europe) and Western-aligned Arab states are promoting the two state solution, sure. But is it feasible right now?
Then you have the one state solution (under an Israeli or Palestinian government). Except the majority of Israelis and Palestinians do not support it.
"But sadly it appears that this minority is becoming the majority."
You mean faux-progressive Westerners or Palestinian people?
Because Palestinians are not a hive mind. They agree with some of Hamas's decisions and disagree with others.
Most of them do not support Hamas as their government or the religious aspect of it. They know that Hamas is in Qatar and does not give a shit about them.
But they do want to be free from their oppressor and some of them think that Hamas's war could help end the occupation.
I'm not going to give it to Hamas under any circumstances, but in defense of the Palestinians who support Hamas's war, other strategies, like nonviolence, have not worked.
My point is, we shouldn't dehumanize people who are fighting for their freedom even if we disagree with them.
As for the self-proclaimed progressives in the West, try explaining to them that Palestinians have not had fair and free elections since 2006.
Show them pictures of Palestinians taking to the streets to protest Hamas and even burn their flags.
Hamas officials destroyed phones lest the "Not all Palestinians support Hamas" truth came out.

This is the SECOND post of this type that i've seen drawing a direct line between the tiktok ban (an aggregious attempt by the authoritarian goverment in the US to control information) and (((Israel))) because of fucking course anytime news is being controlled its somehow the jews fucking fault but its by far the more insulting of the two posts
Tumblr media
Because it literally has a republican representative saying the reasons they're trying to ban it (limiting their own citizens access to non state controlled media sources) and yet its STILL somehow the jews fault.
Even though they've been talking about banning it for YEARS now, long before the october 7th retaliatory strike. They wanted to ban it when it was chinese owned because of the wild sinephobia in the US and microsoft buying it only placated them for so long.
But despite the fact they've wanted to ban it for longer than the average US citizen has been paying attention to the genocide being comitted in israel, combined with the fact that a senator fucking SAID they were trying to take it down because they wanted to control their citizens news access. Its still a magical cabal of jews who are controlling the news. I just hope the US EPA doesn't decide to remove drinking water standards or leftists on tumblr are going to start accusing us of poisoning the village wells again.

Wooden heels clicked rhythmically against the tiled kitchenette floor, the sound dulling and mingling with the whistling of kettles, the bucking of pots and the clinking of cutlery and plates as dish after dish was prepared. The room was crowded as chefs and their assistants bumped hips, reaching and rushing between stations as they desperately yet skilfully attempted to keep track of each component as it was prepared — performing to their utmost abilities under the scrutinising gaze of the acting governess and head maid, Miss (Y/n) (L/n); a woman notorious for her high standards and no nonsense attitude towards the inhabitants of the estate, be they her colleagues or her young students. She expected nothing less than perfection in every aspect of the manor, hence why she was doing a third round of the area, sharp (e/c) eyes flitting dangerously amongst the workers before settling on a young new chef and flaring up with indignant disappointment as she approached the man, tutting as she harshly grabbed his wrist.
"The recipe calls for chopped red onions." She practically hissed, her tone causing the man to back into himself. "So why, pray tell, are you dicing them? Have you decided that you know better than the lord's previous generations of staff?"
"No, Ma'am." He responded in a hushed voice, averting his eyes to the floor beside her feet. "I'll start again, sorry."
"Sorry? You'd have been more than sorry if these had made it to the master's plate." she huffed, relinquishing her grip on his wrist and allowing it to fall limply to his side, "And to think that the lord's company could have been faced with such an egregious state of disobedience and stupidity. What a shameful display." Then, she turned sharply on her heel to address the onlookers with an authoritarian tone and an icy glare before hurrying off to watch over the collection of maids that worked beneath her.
"Now, would you kindly get back to work? Lest I need to speak with our employer regarding your collective incompetence. Good day."
————
Thankfully, her closest peers amongst the manor staff had managed to collectively complete their assigned tasks without so much as a hint of error or defiance. The competency of the maids had always been a source of pride for the (brunette, blonde etc), who valued the very traits they wholeheartedly embodied: dexterity, loyalty, levelheadedness, obedience and delicacy. It was a welcome break from the chaos she oft faced with the rest of her co-workers to say the least — and she treasured it immensely. Though, she didn't have the time to spend praising them as she was soon ushered away to welcome her employer's guest and his own staff members alongside the head butler, Mr Johnson — as was required of those in their positions.
So, there they were stood, still and silent yet acutely aware of their master and their surroundings as they waited. The foyer was quickly growing stuffy and uncomfortable, but she still managed to remain still, neatly folding her hands behind her back — occasionally reaching up to gently adjust the violet pinned to her breast pocket before hastily returning to her upright position. Then, finally, the front door creaked open, bathing the crowded room in a blanket of warm afternoon light as their master rushed forth to greet the young boy in front of him, paying no mind to the child's entourage as he fed him sickly sweet greetings.
"Earl Phantomhive, thank you for going out of your way to visit my estate this fine afternoon."
The boy nodded, addressing her master as they walked off into the bowls of the estate, followed shortly by the staff. As was her duty, (Y/n) stepped forwards and stopped the small group in their tracks, only allowing the earl's head butler past as she shared a stern look with her co-worker as she spoke.
"I'm afraid that only the closest staff members are allowed to attend the meeting." Her eyes flitted scrutinisingly across the trio as she gestured for Johnson to follow the other butler. "I'll escort you to your rooms. Please, follow me."
Her words left no room for question and they, albeit begrudgingly, followed behind her, carrying their bags as they navigated the barely lit halls and stairways of the estate. However, as she walked, the maid couldn't help but allow her eyes to wander over to the red haired Phantomhive servant, noting some familiarity about her before hurriedly shaking it off.
It would be one hell of a coincidence if it were her Mey, after all, so she felt no need to consciously dwell upon it.
————
After several awkward minutes of silent walking, (Y/n) came to a sudden halt and turned sharply on her heels to address her company, unable to stop her eyes from lingering on the red headed maid as she spoke.
"This is the secondary guest wing of our estate and you'll be staying here for the entirety of your stay." She gestured to two rooms to either side of her with one gloved hand, looking between the two men. "You two will be staying here respectively." Then, she turned to the maid and, after hesitating for a brief moment, continued. "You'll be staying further down the hall so, please, follow me."
The trio shared a wary look between themselves before the smaller of the men handed the maid her luggage and the two women set off once more.
————
"I don't think we actually introduced ourselves, we didn't." The woman stammered, causing the (brunette, blonde etc) to turn her head towards her, raising a curious eyebrow at her. "I'm Mey-rin, the shorter boy is Finny and the cook is Baldroy. We're —"
"The Phantomhive servants, yes, I'm aware." She pinched the bridge of her nose and inhaled sharply before suddenly halting once again. "I'm (Y/n) (L/n), before you ask, I'm the head maid of the estate and this is your room. I'll help you with your things."
"Are you going to keep pretending that you don't know me?" Mey spoke up after a few minutes of silent unpacking, taking off her glasses and placing them neatly on the nightstand. Her words caused the (brunette, blonde etc) to freeze slightly before she deeply inhaled and managed a low response.
"I don't owe you anything of the sort, Mey."
The redhead sighed deeply, stepping forwards to place a gentle, reassuring hand on (Y/n)'s shoulder. "I would have taken you with me if I was allowed, you know." Her voice was lower, calmer and more familiar to the other maid, causing her eyes to sting and blur with nudged tears as she brushed her ex-lover off.
"You didn't have to leave." She practically growled. "You didn't even say goodbye, I was worried sick about you — I thought you were dead, for God's sake, Mey."
"I wasn't myself," Mey-rin excused, hazel eyes staring kindly (up/down/across) at the other woman, "I realised it was a brilliant opportunity that I couldn't just pass up and —"
"And you realised you could just drop me like I meant nothing to impress whoever it was that you met that night. That's how it went, right?"
"No!" She insisted, tightly grasping (Y/n)'s hands in her own, staring earnestly into her eyes as she continued in a softer tone. "I wasn't thinking, but I realised what I'd done shortly after and asked Mr Sebastian to go and find you, but we couldn't. I would never hurt you, not intentionally."
(Y/n) smiled sadly, shaking her head as she spoke. "You never think do you, Mey?" another humourless laugh, "Just admit that you wanted to leave."
"I'm not going to lie to you, (Y/n), and I'm not going to leave you again — I swear."
"Don't make promises you can't keep."
"I can keep it this time, (Y/n), the young lord was talking about working permanently with your master. So even if you're certain that you don't believe me or that I'm going to leave, I can't. I won't." Honest hazel eyes looked deeply into her own, brimming with familiarity and kindness as she smiled shakily yet certainly. "I won't leave you again."
(Y/n) sighed, worrying her lower lip between her teeth, silent in contemplation before she slowly leaned (up/down/forwards) and chastely pressed her lips against Mey-rin's. "Okay. I'll give you one more chance — any mistakes from now and I'm done."
The redhead nodded gratefully at that, moving one hand to gently grasp the side of (Y/n)'s face before pulling her into another kiss — one that was sweeter, longer, deeper and even more familiar as they settled into the same old rhythm as they had years before. It was almost as if nothing had changed between them, and they were content with that, willing to pretend that was the case even though they were all too aware that this wasn't the case.
————
Unable to completely contain themselves after so long apart, they descended upon one another: the (brunette, blonde etc)'s hands moved to Mey's waist, pulling her closer before sliding up to unbutton her blouse and shove it off of her shoulders; lips, teeth and tongues clashed in a heated, overdue kiss as they each tilted their heads to deepen the gesture; clothed hips ground against one another as (Y/n) walked the redhead backwards until her calves collided with the bed frame — at which point she, reluctantly, pulled away and shoved her down onto the bed, only to be pulled down on top of her as the other maid grasped her upper arms. They fell in a heap on the bed, laughing quietly amongst themselves before hurriedly tugging their clothing away from one another's bodies.
Layer after layer of cotton, cheap lace and linens were discarded to the side of the bed, this flurry of activity only ceasing once they were left in their undergarments (their respective corsets having since been hastily undone and left to join the growing pile of garments on the floor). Seemingly entranced by her form, (Y/n) rolled them both so that she was straddling Mey-rin's waist, sliding one hand under the other woman's white chemise to gently squeeze and tease at the swell of her breasts, eventually pulling the thin garment up to her collar and leaning down to take the other nipple into her mouth — encircling the sensitive flesh with her teeth and tongue as Mey arched into her touch. After a few minutes of this, the (h/c) haired woman pulled away and began to trail a series of open mouthed kisses down her stomach until she reached the band of her drawers, only to be pushed away and down onto the mattress by Meyrin, who, panting and red in the face, hurriedly unbuttoned and untied her combinations, pulling them away from her entirely to reveal her (s/c) (figure) form to her lustful hazel eyes.
Their eyes met for a brief moment before Mey leaned down, connecting their lips briefly before trailing soft kisses down her jaw to the hollow of her throat — not so lightly nipping at the skin as she went — before moving further down to litter her collar and breasts with kisses and featherlight bites. This caused the woman beneath her to squirm and moan lightly as she moved her hands to grasp her hips, guiding her to grind against her thighs — an action that earned her muffled moans and whimpers from the redhead that moved to harshly bite down on the crux of her throat, suckling at the skin until a deep purple-red mark began to appear against the (s/c) canvas of her neck.
Though, before long, this proved itself to be far too little to sate their sinful hunger for one another and they came to an unspoken agreement as Mey-rin hurriedly ridded herself of her remaining clothing — her lightly sodden drawers and her stockings. Then, finally bare, she climbed atop her lover, wrapping her arms loosely around her shoulders as she leaned back onto the mattress, lips meeting briefly before they rearranged themselves — with Mey climbing completely atop her lover in such a way that her dripping cunt was mere millimetres above her face as she leaned down to press her lips against the other's thighs, teasingly kissing the areas closest to her womanhood and quivering with eagerness as she felt (Y/n)'s cool breath against her own soaked slit.
After several teasing seconds, they descended upon one another completely.
————
Mey's dexterous tongue dove between her sodden lower lips, devouring her whole as she slid the tip slowly along her, taking a few moments to encircle and suck on her lightly swollen clit before moving down to slip her tongue into her dripping entrance. She then spread the labia with two fingers, giving her better access to her lover's sensitive sex before sliding one thumb over her clit, harshly rubbing and stimulating it as (Y/n) continued to writhe and spasm beneath her. Meanwhile, the (brunette, blonde etc) was almost mirroring her finer ministrations: pulling her closer to her mouth by her hips with one hand, sucking on and encircling her sensitive clit with her tongue and pumping her talented digits into her tight entrance, scissoring and curling them in just the right way to get the woman atop her to moan and arch her back.
Hips ground down onto their mouths, desperately searching for friction as they swallowed every ounce of honey-sweet pleasure that seeped out of their spasming cunts, drinking it up like the finest nectar as they gradually became more and more erratic in their movements. Mey quickly fell into a rhythm of desperately bucking into (Y/n)'s fingers, grinding down onto her knuckles as she continued to harshly and hastily suck, rub and lick her most sensitive area - letting out muffled moans and whimpers against her. Similarly, (Y/n) began to grind against her lover's tongue, arching up and into her as she desperately yet skilfully filled her and stretched her with her fingers — shakily sucking on her clit as she moaned and whined against her.
With every passing moment, she could feel a familiar pressure coiling uncomfortably within her, knotting unbearably tight as she began to wantonly chase after her release. Though, before she reached her own peak, she felt the woman atop her began to writhe and spasm, feeling her moaning into her louder and more shakily, signs that she had just fallen over the edge of ecstasy and (Y/n), in spite of herself, tightened her grip on her waist and held her in place as she began to devour her with more fervour than before. Seemingly out of instinct, Mey-rin moved to tightly - almost painfully so — grip the underneath of her (size) thighs, digging her nails into the sensitive (s/c) flesh to ground herself as she continued to languidly slide her tongue along her lover's soaking slit.
Driven to her own release by the sight, scent and sound of her partner, (Y/n) was sent over the edge soon after: groaning, whimpering, grinding, bucking, moaning, writhing and swallowing every response and touch from her lover. Her eyelids were alight with glowing splotches of beautiful, bright white light — exploding in tandem with the spasming of the muscles in her abdomen. Muffled by the spasming, dripping cunt of her partner, her lips parted to release a throaty string of cries, praises and pleas for her as they continued to work one another through their releases - writhing and bucking as her senses were overwhelmed with Mey-rin (everything about her that was pressed against and inside of her), practically aflame with lust as she slowly came down from her climax.
————
After several minutes of grunting and groaning and moving shakily in sync with one another, they finally separated as Mey shuffled off of (Y/n) to lay beside her, red in the face and panting as she went. Then, she pulled the (taller/shorter/other) woman into her arms, offering a tired, but content smile that glistened with her release that (Y/n) couldn't help but mirror, leaning towards her to press her lips gently to hers — connecting the two in a breathless kiss stained with their flavours before they pulled away. In the aftermath of their orgasms, they almost seemed to glow, their sweat covered skin and cum slicked thighs and mouths glistening in the warm afternoon sun.
It was familiar and pleasant; a living dream that half mirrored the life they had once had together whilst holding a whispered promise of the new life they would start — no longer a sniper and her aid, but rather two maids deeply in love with one another and ready to move on. So, as the faint summer breeze slipped through a crack in the window frame, the (brunette, blonde etc) managed a small retort, panting slightly and offering a lazy smirk as she spoke yet holding a near-forgotten kindness and warmth in her eyes.
"This may very well be the start of a wonderful little secret."

i rarely giggle with glee over stuff, its gotta be like absolutely preem stuff to me, so theres this alt history thing (Kaiserreich, Hoi4 mod, got alot of lore in it, basically Germany beat the entente in ww1, France and Britain became syndicalist, Russian revolution failed, the British government was exiled to Canada ((👎)) austria hungary is still around, also the ottomans, Italy is in 2 or 3 pieces cant recall rn, all that stuff, and america is not doing good at all ((I’m a loser btw did y’all know that))) and I just found a youtube channel all about it, with a little series goin on, i think theres only 2 episodes of it? Ive only watched the trailer but its got me all giddy about it, gonna watch the actual episodes tmrw cause its 3 am and i spent an hour typing all this (i edited this part after finishing the rest lol) its about the second american civil war which happens in this world cause america is all kinds of fucked up since they lost the war, i think there was also the great depression still, but theres also black monday after that (german stock market crashes, everyone that isnt syndicalist or whatever gets fucked over), america splits into quite a few shards (im not yhe best source for all this btw cause i like to play the version that is wackier and less realistic) ((i think in normal kaiserreich theres 7 factions in america, maybe 6, in the wackier version there can ve like 11)) anywya im pretty sure its the pacific states, which is the pacifc states of america ofc, they are progressives, social liberals, that stuff, there might be the western command center, that has the rockies, which is a split off of the federal government, same side of the civil war as the federal gov, idk if they exist in normal kaiserreich, (if they dont its just the actual federal gov who control it), they seperate the PSA from the American Union State, who has the midwest with texas and stuff i believe, their leaders huey long, (one of 2 i remember) in game their ideology is authoritarian democracy or smth, i think theres a lil bit of socialism goin on in there, idrk what their deal is in the lore i havent looked at them much, then theres the Syndicalists, who have the rust belt, they are ofc syndicalists, and below them is the constitutional american republic that controls the south, religious, racist, nutjobs, just imagine the confederacy 2.0, very L faction honestly (they usually get stomped in game <3) , in Washington D.C theres the federal goverment, I think run by macarthur after he takes charge for the war, or coups if some of the other factions get elected, they are the legitimate government, macarthur is still macarthur, and finally (if i recall correctly) theres New england, they control the new england area, ( they are controlled by the feds until they ask canada to come help them out, canada walks in, establishes new england ((in game as a puppet usually, once again i. am NOT the best source for this, they are usually just like normalish i think, idk prolly like the democrats in america today, but 1930s (in the wackier version they typically get taken over by hp lovecraft and go insane but thats all very non canon).
.
.
.
I have no idea where j was going with this, uhhh, im just gonna leave the trailer here for it cause why not, did I mention I get no bitches btw? cause this prolly psychically repells people without either of us realizing. anyway if anyone actually reads all my dumb rambling thanks for taking the time, if you didn’t and your only reading this, thanks for reading any of it at all, yeah.

I know this may sound triggering, and it’s okay if you’re not comfortable to answer, but I have a headcanon that during the Brazilian dictatorship years, especially between the 70’s, Luciano would became very thin in an unhealthy way because of the Meningitis epidemic, since one of the biggest symptoms is the loss of appetite, but as the dictatorship did everything to hide it from the population, he kind of completely ignored his own condition. How would you imagine Port's reaction to Lu like that? Of course, after the fall of both authoritarian regimes
Hi, Anon!
I think Port would be beyond shocked. His goverment hid a lot of things during his dictatorship, his people were starving during WW2 because the goverment took their food and sold it. But after the end of his dictatorship in 74, he was slowly getting better and also trying very hard to join the EU, so he was at a point where he was feeling better but also very stressed because he needed to prove himself to Europe.
Luciano's dictatorship ended in 85, so Port was out of his for over 10 years and was really shocked by how skinny and frail Luciano looked. He'd start showing up at his place more often to make sure he rested and ate well, though I think Luci wouldn't want him there. Luciano also had to prove to the world that he was alright and strong.
But Port didn't care, and he kept showing up. Sometimes he'd made an excuse that he wanted to catch the newest telenovela and wanted to watch it with Luciano.

A mention of North Korean hackers typically conjures images of either crippling cyberattacks or, more often, massive cryptocurrency heists. But a new report on the authoritarian state’s capabilities and tendencies paints a different picture.
The report, prepared by cyber-intelligence firm Recorded Future and shared exclusively with Foreign Policy, labels espionage as the predominant motive of North Korea’s cyberprogram. Recorded Future analyzed 273 cyberattacks over a 14-year period linked to North Korean state-sponsored groups and found that information collection was the primary motivation for more than 70 percent of them.
“The narrative seems to be that North Korea is a bunch of cybercriminals that are backed by a state, but they’re just pulling off all of this financially motivated cybercrime, and that is one aspect of their strategy,” said Mitch Haszard, a senior threat intelligence analyst at Recorded Future and lead author of the report.
“But what this report shows is that they’re still heavily focused on information collection, or cyber-espionage, and they conduct more of those operations than they do financially motivated or financial theft operations.”
Pyongyang predominantly seeks to use cyber-operations to either “gain insight into how its adversaries think” or “access to information on technologies” that will help it in a conflict with those adversaries, the report said. Government entities are the most frequent targets, followed by cryptocurrency, media, finance, defense, and nongovernmental organizations.
“North Korea’s leadership appears to be much more interested in learning about what others think of them, gathering information that can help them develop nuclear and ballistic missile technology, and stealing money to fund their regime,” the report added.
However, North Korea’s obsession with cryptocurrency is unique, and the country’s cyber-operations are one of its biggest avenues to prop up its nuclear arsenal. Anne Neuberger, the White House’s cyber czar, said at an event in Washington last month that half of the regime’s missile program is funded by cryptocurrency and cyberheists.
“There aren’t really any other states or countries that are trying to steal cryptocurrency, so North Korea is unique in that perspective, but they still do a lot of things that other states do,” Haszard said.
The heists tend to make headlines, with North Korean hackers linked to thefts worth billions of dollars from cryptocurrency exchanges around the world in recent years, with two high-profile attacks on exchanges in Estonia and California so far this year. Beyond crypto, North Korea has been linked to larger and more disruptive global attacks, starting with the crippling of Sony Pictures just under a decade ago that put its cybercapabilities on the map. That was followed by a hack of Bangladesh’s central bank that compromised the global financial transfer system known as Swift, and a crippling of the United Kingdom’s National Health Service.
However, Haszard and his colleagues found that the vast majority of North Korea’s cyberactivity goes after targets much closer to home. Nearly 80 percent of the attacks for which geographic information is available took place in Asia, according to the report. Most of that is in its immediate neighborhood: South Korea accounted for just over 65 percent of the targets among the 29 countries where attacks took place. The United States is a distant second, at 8.5 percent, and no other country accounted for more than 3 percent of North Korean attacks.
Recorded Future found that Lazarus, the most notorious and high-profile hacking group linked to the authoritarian regime, tends to go after more global targets but is not the most common perpetrator of cyberattacks. That distinction belongs to a group called Kimsuky, which mainly targets Asian government and civil society entities and accounted for more than one-third of total attacks. According to multiple U.S. law enforcement agencies, Kimsuky hackers pose as South Korean journalists, exchanging emails with their targets on the pretext of setting up interviews before sending them a link or document embedded with malware. That malware, known as BabyShark, gives hackers access to the victims’ device and communications. “Kimsuky actors have also been known to configure a victim’s email account to quietly auto-forward all emails to another actor-controlled email,” a joint cybersecurity advisory by the FBI, National Security Agency, and South Korean authorities earlier this month said.
While Pyongyang has established its ability to disrupt critical infrastructure in the West and conduct ransomware attacks, it is increasingly less likely to conduct those types of attacks compared to other cyber-capable adversaries such as Russia and China. It prefers to go smaller, faster, and more frequently, deploying more basic techniques such as stealing passwords or phishing emails, which infect systems with viruses by fooling users into clicking on dodgy links.
“The thing that I see in my tracking of North Korean threat actors is an incredible amount of activity that is generally low-sophistication in nature,” Haszard said, adding that that’s likely a matter of strategy rather than ability. “They’re achieving a lot of success doing the kind of lowest-common-denominator cyberattacks. So if it were me, why would I change?”

pedagogy of the repressed (Learning Curve, s1 e16)
The kindest thing I can say about "Learning Curve" is that it wasn't meant to be a season finale. For better or worse, that honor was intended for "The 37s," with additional Season 2 episodes aired between. I find this episode so incoherent as a climax to the first season that I considered reviewing them in filming order, before rejecting the idea as deranged.
On the whole I really like Tuvok as a character. As the oldest officer on board, he brings experience and depth of memory to his interactions, and while his Vulcan persona is familiar and by-the-book, Tim Russ's performance makes it feel fully realized (with perhaps an edge of charm).
I guess making Tuvok a piece of shit authoritarian is part of the specificity of his character, even if flexing your power over your students isn't terribly logical. But by making his bad teaching methods representative of the Starfleet ethos, there's only one possible conclusion, and it's nothing the show wants to face: Starfleet sucks.
Tumblr media
The episode begins with a brief Janeway holonovel scene. It is inane. Why would anyone want to LARP being a governess? The obnoxious children make their appearance, but soon the whole exercise is happily interrupted.
A cohort of underperforming former Maquis is assigned to "field training." Let's remember, these folks never consented to work on this ship; their only obligation is to Chakotay as their former captain. After they walk out of training (a labor action if I ever saw one), Tuvok's next move is the enforcement of the Starfleet dress code. I was MAD when Gerron has to remove his Bajoran earring - so much is made of Ro Laren's earring in TNG, but here it's a passing moment of forced cultural assimilation that goes unchecked.
The episode wholly accepts that the view that these Maquis crew are undisciplined, lazy, and just can't cope with the rigors of Starfleet service. That their lives are anarchic-in-a-bad-way is underscored by Chakotay throwing a punch to put Dalby in his place - that's "the Maquis way," apparently! To which I say, really? Listen, I don't know the first thing about guerrilla fighters, I'm sure things get colorful between weapons drills and political philosophy debates, but wouldn't a large, sustained insurgency have methods for self-organization that don't involve frequent acts of violence?
Tuvok's training devolves into an episode of "The Biggest Loser," characterized by tough love and long-distance jogging. When his approach fails, an apt metaphor from Neelix makes him realize that he needs to build a relationship with his students, but it's too late. Only a crisis in the last act, in which Tuvok bend the rules, causes the Maquis to realize that they're willing to change as well(??)
It's just the stupidest ending - Tuvok and his students never demonstrate an ability to work well together, and Starfleet methods are never vindicated. In fact, nothing has changed by the end of this episode, as Tuvok has already showcased an ability to break rules in "Prime Factors." The episode's failure, in my mind, speaks to the failure of the show as a whole to tackle the Maquis/Starfleet conflict. After all, to deliver on its own premise would mean to complicate its belief in Starfleet heroism, and this show is too damn conservative to attempt it.
The only saving grace of this one is the cheese subplot, which is actually a hoot. There is no scientific mystery too ridiculous for this show, and I think that's wonderful.

I laughed out loud: "To discuss the patient's condition in front of the patient would be a serious breach of professional etiquette. It's been suggested that I cultivate a greater sensitivity to my patient's needs. Don't worry, my little friend."
Like a fermentation gone wrong, this one stunk. 1.5/5 infected alien cheeses.

You can't exactly directly comfront them; fans often swarm around them, cheering and sequel sight of highly admired citizen. However, it didn't prevent a slip of smile to see a simple life potray in the right make you feel like the dangerous stunt and dnager you took was all worth to see life play it role.
You decided to settle in close as a 'medium' covered your actual worth since you find various curse wandering around covered as a 'Pokemon' attack.
What if during your commission investigation you find yourself facing the Subway Bros that was assigned by the authority to examine the damage and condition.
It got worst when they see you in a middle battle of a curse. How will this play out I wonder.
Would you still play out as a regular 'citizen' just being all weird, nah can't be it especially with the freshly open wound drip like a raindrop by the window.
You were grateful having them patch you up, you wonder how will you ever explain now that they take you in. Or other senario you run from the scene and now try to awkwardly avoid any route and goverment circumstances. Hey who can't blame you from a traumatic ordeal that still exist even in other world, who doesn't want more thing on their plate. IT FIIINE, you have other favorite character.
