Zuko (and Sokka) in Avatar Chibi Short - Bending Battle

Watching the Avatar Chibi Short - Bending Battle was such a weird experience. The animation itself is nice and cute, but there is something truly messed up when Book 1!Zuko - the antagonist - is the only one non-abusive bender toward Sokka. And Katara, Aang and Toph are literally Sokka’s family and friends!

The short animation is about an argument between Katara, Aang and Toph whose element is the best (Sokka tried to join their bender game but his boomerang skill wasn’t taken into account). 

To prove her point, Katara - Sokka’s younger sister - froze him and literally shattered into pieces.

Toph used Sokka as a ball in a flipper-like game created by her earthbending. 

When Sokka outright said he is tired of being used as everyone’s dummy,

Aang used his airbending to turn him into a balloon.

and once Sokka fell down into lake, Aang was just laughing, so proud of himself and his element.

And there is Zuko (and I can't stress enough, in his Book 1’s outfit of the antagonist) who joined the argument by throwing a flame at Sokka…

except there is no visible sign that Sokka was scorched. Only the fish he held in hand catched the fire and was burned (cooked). 

And there is something to say about that scene, because the animation could easily mark that Sokka was burned in a comedic way - a bit of smoke or smoldering flame here and there - but it didn't. And yeah, in previous scenes there is no permanent damage done either, but we can see Sokka's distress (and pain in cause of Toph's bending?) but it is absent from the fire scene; Sokka's expression does not change at all, while the fish is literally on flame. Which is why I think Zuko's bending did not harm Sokka, and fire was actually aimed at the fish.

A fish that Sokka actually ate at the end of episode.

And even once the benders had another contest whose power/skills is the best, when Zuko was using his fire, he is the only one to actually warn others to stay away

while Aang, Katara and Toph just used their respective elements without any warning.

Look, I know this is chibi and not serious animation but damn, it truly hits hard how Zuko (and by extension, Iroh) is the only one person that did not use his element to abuse Sokka, the one non-bender in the group and actually seems to be caution of how dangerous the fire is (and how he couldn’t be aware if his face was burned with fire?) which fits nicely to the original source material and how Zuko did not use fire to burn people on purpose (as could be seen with Zhao during Agni Kai and how he apologized to Toph for burning her feets by accident).

All while Zuko is presented in his Book 1's outfit, when he played the role of antagonist.

On side note, this little animation would be great propaganda material for LoK's Amon and his Equalist movement, wouldn't it? Benders proving their might by abusing non-bender person? Oh yeah, that would be perfect propaganda.

Netflix doing all this lowkey zutara promo is tickling me. Idk what decision they’ll go for but I’m just getting throwbacks to when the cartoon was airing and all the love triangle bait and shipping promo.

If you weren’t there you missed out. It was great. The chibi shorts, the avatar extras, the magazines literally going who will Katara end up with. Them throwing Jet and Haru into the mix. It was a mess. Literally reliving 2006 all over again I love it 😭💕💕

Nah Zutara is def happening. Two of the writers (Omashu and Into the Dark) are Zutara shippers and liking Zutara content all the time esp about Kiawentiio and Dallas. The Netflix accounts are pushing Zutara like crazy. Albert Kim is an enemies to lovers enthusiast and said that the original endgame ships are up in the air.

I am trying so very hard to be objective about this and so I am going to tell you what I'm seeing in the nicest way possible but I'm really sorry if I can't:

I've checked the official Netflix account, I follow it on twitter, nothing afaik. The closest I found was picture sets but they did it for Dallas and Gordon, Dallas and Ian, Elizabeth Yu and Kiawentiio too, and obviously Gordon and Kiawentiio, all the duos. There's a video clip of Kiawentiio throwing out a question card about if Katara likes Zuko and their first immediate reaction is laughing (and not in a way that's confirming it- like Dallas was about to clap and Ian gave a thumbs-up, not encouraging and they conclude it with saying a lukewarm 'no kinda well' likely because it's spoilers for season 3).

Kiawentiio right after an interviewer mentioned Zutara, she said and I quote ; "What Avatar are you watching?"

Albert Kim on Kataang:

It's being delayed to S2 because the age difference looks way too obvious in live action. It's still happening, just later when the actors look closer in age. They heavily hint towards future Kataang by comparing Aang and Katara to Tui and La on-screen (Yue saying the ocean will forever search for its counterpart while panning between Aang and Katara whos is reaching out for him, and Sokka and Yue where Sokka's begging Yue to stay- it's very on-the nose).

The OG show also had creatives who like Zutara, they inserted bait for it in the chibi shorts but nothing came of it in any canon and everything is steadfastly for Kataang. Heck, currently the cast are pushing Zukka all the time, doesn't mean it's going to be canon(Dallas Liu and Ian Ousley saying "hey ship our characters!" word-for-word does not equal Zuko and Sokka are going to date for real in the show).

It's disappointing that fanon ships aren't canon, but that's just what you sign up for when shipping fanon. You are not going to to get what you want, neither am I.

Kataang is the heart of the show, nothing will take that away and I think it's best to just, make peace with that instead of looking too hard into behind-the-scenes and cast stuff hoping THIS is when it's going to happen(I play along with the Zukka bait because it's funny, not because I think it's going to be real).

Also, writers liking Zutara content? Fine, do you, have a blast! It DOES get weird when they're sincerely promoting Dallas and Kiawentiio as an item though because they met when she was like 15 and he was 19/20, and now she's 17 while he's 22 now. She's a child, he's an adult pretty much their entire work relationship. That's really freaking weird. EDIT: Dallas and Ian, who are the actual adults in the cast have been actively redirecting all ship-related conversations towards themselves and their characters because they CAN handle whatever flame wars erupt from that, meanwhile Gordon and Kiawentiio are children so they shouldn't even be in the discussion as actors when it comes to the fictional ships.

Avatar News exclusive: Avatar Studios is developing an animated preschool show!

Today, we can fill out more of Avatar Studios’ animated slate, with the important caveat that as we move past the earlier projects we’ve already revealed, things become more and more likely to change since they’re further out. So keep that in mind!

With that out of the way, we can reveal that Avatar Studios is developing an animated series aimed at the preschool demographic! Currently, this should be what fills the 2026 show slot in Avatar Studios’ one animated movie and series every year plans. I say “should” because, again, as you get into those further years things just naturally become more likely to change.

To me, the big takeaway is the fact that they’re exploring a project like this at all, not necessarily the exact date it’ll come out in the next half of the decade, you know?

That’s also all the details I have-- no word on what era it’ll take place in, or even whether it’ll “take place” in any era or be more of a fun definitely-not-canon thing like the 2007 chibi shorts, which is what the image I’ve used above is from!

This new preschool series will likely stream on Paramount+ as is the main intention for Avatar Studios’ shows, although it’s possible it could air on TV on Nick Jr. or Nickelodeon as well! Just guessing on that aspect.

This is part of Avatar Studios’ ambitious “multi-tiered” plans to grow the Avatar franchise to new mediums and audiences. Up until now, I’ve referred to this 2026 show as a “spinoff series”, so now you know what that was. With that, we’ve filled in four out of six of their current planned projects-- tomorrow, we’re bringing you one more.

ok so now that everyone who will realistically ever give a shit has seen this:

well, hear me out, there's something very interesting about these chibi shorts beyond the superficial content;

they're *not actually canon*; what they are is characters reacting *to* the events of the arc. events that asuna wasn't there to witness

in the main canon, all she knows about what happened in that game is a few bits of BoB footage, and whatever sinon and kirito told her afterwards (which will have been rather bare-bones, considering both of their characters)

so the end result is that in these shorts we basically have an AU version of asuna who *does* know

and that got me thinking

the ggo avatar was *randomised*! the way she had fun with it speaks volumes of course, but it being there at all was a coincidence

but here's the thing: so was the original ALO avatar! (the second one wasn't)

so then...

what if the "random girl avatar" thing happened *then*?!

^add pointy ears and change the outfit a bit and there you go

this would've genuinely been just as likely as what happened in canon!

but the *consequences*!

because in this scenario she'd just end up saving asuna and kicking sugou's creepy kidnapping nepo-baby ass *looking like that*

and on top of that she'd probably end up behaving just as femme with leafa before that as she canonically did with sinon; but the different is leafa is *suguha*. her *sister*. and the moment they figure it out there'd be questions sugu would probably be asking!

and from the chibi shorts we already have official confirmation on how asuna would react; and i suspect sugu would be *very* in on it, especially because she and kirito do in fact still live with their mom in the same house irl

they wouldn't just "knowingly wait it out" like sinon does (because she absolutely knows)

conclusion: the only reason kirito's egg hasn't been cracked by force yet is because of the fact the most blatant egg shit happened in the one game the gang wasn't there to witness it

babes new pgr Oc just dropped. She’s actually just a PGR version of my usual avatar lol, I’m gonna give her lore and a better illustration but this is all I got for now.

I do have this full body non chibi illustration but no colours

Her name is Kouryuu or Kou for short and she’s with the WGAA, she’s a seamstress. She specializes in making construct coatings and her weapon is a giant pair of scissors Kill La Kill style. Her little bunny plush on her hip is named Yves, she uses it as a pin cushion. The eye between her horns (inver devices) is an advanced scanner that allows her to get the measurements of any objects, as well as reveal any obscured objects. It can also display a 3D hologram. She mostly uses it to scan the measurements of her clients and visualize her pieces though.

Her whole concept is from @rei-dragoness who suggested the idea of a fashion designer construct, honestly he cooked the most here.
