I don't know if you've answered something like this before, but when did you start to become attached to Lor and/or Nova? Is there a history behind it or did it just happen and kind of spiral. I love your stuff by the way, stay hydrated.

It’s kinda difficult to explain without delving into some personal stuff, but I’ll try to explain it as best I can. I can’t add a read more on mobile, so be warned this is going to be a long post. I’ll tag it as such. By long I mean I’m scrolling back up to add I’ve been typing for over half an hour. Might as well just call this half of my life story. Anyways...

Nova was the first of the two I developed a big interest in, hence why all my social media is named what it is. At first it was something I kept to myself because it was during a very difficult time in my life. To be frank, if it weren’t for me deciding to draw Nova one night, I probably wouldn’t be here. What started out as what I thought would be a temporary distraction turned into my first source of legitimate interest and motivation; I saw the drawing I made that night, what I thought would be my last contribution to the world, and thought, “Well this doesn’t look great. I can do better.”

And so I begun trying to do just that. Constantly drawing Nova, slowly letting the idea of him being just a mere distraction from the inevitable choice I thought I would make fade away. Because, for once, I actually had a solid interest, something to focus on that I could keep improving at and show others I was improving at. And when you start to improve at something, suddenly you feel a bit better about yourself.

In that journey of realizing I had more reason to live than I thought, I started getting attached to Nova as a character, and one I could relate to for a very long time. While most say Nova looks sleepy, I’ve always seen it as tired; not in the physical way, but in terms of emotions. Tired of waiting, of existing; lonely, too. I felt that.

I also connected strongly with the way Nova was always treated by the fandom, as I started interacting with it. Always in the background, overshadowed by others, and in general ignored; just like how I felt constantly. Everyone around me seemed to excel at something, or was popular and beloved, or otherwise was at least something. They were the Marxes, the Galacta Knights, the Dededes, Meta Knights, Kirbies.

I, on the other hand, was not. At best I was a collection of little somethings in a trench coat, stuff that didn’t matter but at least gave me some semblance of identity. I liked bugs, I liked video games, I liked going outside, things like that. A random assortment of different, miscellaneous parts, but no real idea what those parts made or what I was without them. Sound familiar?

Nova became a huge part of my identity in a matter of months. I lived and breathed Nova, I wrote bad Nova fanfic, I made doodles of Nova on possibly every paper assignment in school. I was, honestly, entirely obsessed.

That’s kinda when things started to change, some ways for the better, some for worse. Obviously, I had a massive level of interest in one specific random character that nobody else really shared. I talked about almost nothing but said interest, made content only of said interest.

People began getting annoyed, but I didn’t notice until it was too late. Suddenly people I was close to began to express dislike towards Nova because of me. Me, who identified in every way as something tied to Nova. People talked about me behind my back, vagued about me, and ultimately some made it abundantly clear that they didn’t respect me. Some of those people I still can’t avoid today.

That became another low point for me. My depression got bad again, as did my anxiety. Not quite as low as I was that fateful night, at least, but low enough for my self esteem to plummet to levels it still hasn’t reached again. That wasn’t helped by the fact that I constantly associated myself with a character that was lonely, depressed, and tired in general.

Eventually I had the unconscious realization that I had to find something else to split my focus with. For a little bit that was Star Dream, but ultimately it didn’t stick. I’m very close to someone who really likes Meta Knight, so I tried to fixate on him, too. That didn’t last either. Marx was a definite no, given past experiences with several Marx fans sending me hate and death threats for not liking him.

Eventually I realized the problem was that I didn’t relate to any of these characters in a meaningful way. There was nothing to latch onto for me. So, I went back to square one in having to figure out what my identity was, just minus Nova. Which was a lot harder than I’d like to admit. Seriously, even my favorite color was because of Nova.

My goal eventually became to find someone that had aspects of Nova that wouldn’t encourage me to identify as lonely and depressed at all times, who was strong and independent and likable and maybe even not a background character! Like... MAGOLOR!

And then I fell in love with his pretty boat instead.

But! All that gave me something to work with; Lor was, in essence, a blank slate; had the bare minimum qualifications to be considered a character. Kinda like how I felt I had the bare minimum things to qualify as a person. It became a case of doing exactly what I did with Nova, but with the goal of making her like someone completely different and unexpected. I slapped on random personality traits I had or had had and decided, hey, this works, I can trick myself into being a new person by pretending it’s a character! Which was in essence exactly my process with Nova, just in a conscious manner this time.

It was around this time I first figured out I was asexual, thanks to my oldest sister, and how perfect was it that both my old and new obsessions were machines? Bam, they’re ace too, so now I have a medium to explore what that really means for me. Same thing happened when I realized I was panromantic. This happened with a lot of stuff as I learned more about myself via treating myself as characters that needed a happy ending.

Nowadays I’ve managed to separate myself a bit, and made Nova and Lor more than just The Staples Of My Identity. It still hurts a lot when people are mean about them, especially when it comes to old trauma, but not as much as it used to. Nowadays they’re just my big faves/comfort characters, but they’re still extremely important to me either way.

10.  ( INSPIRATION FOR MUSE ) ——   Hmmmm well, i’ve been writing so many au’s and headcanons as well as some fics for the past couple of/several(?) years now; so it’s a bit hard to pinpoint. depending on the au or headcanon, he might act different n stuff--it would all depend on the plot and environment, etc. however, for this particular rp blog, i try to stay more on the canon side of things; except i try to write him more how i wish he acted in the series. he’s a total sweetheart but sometimes the way he’d react to something etc made me think no that isn’t andre!!>:( (like that time he found out rosalie loved oscar and he just says oh don’t worry u’ll get over her and find a man to really fall in love. NO. that is NOT the andre i know!!>:( he’d never say that he’s a big gay bi disaster too. he’d be more supportive and they’d help each other because man oscar is oblivious--i love her sm tho lol). and i guess i put stuff i like unto him like being kind to others and stuff i’m just....a sucker for cute, fluffy, sweet characters gehuiffej also my current obsession with animal crossing has made his sweetness factor go 100 times higher; especially since i put him in as a character lol but either way, i always found andre to be a very kind character. I also take insp from other characters that i like.:P but like even without all my head canons he's a very kind character and i just love him.;_;

11.  ( STORY BEHIND URL ) ——  i got inspired by the soundtrack from utena; sunlit garden.:-) i’ve always loved that particular song and have used it for inspiration for many scenes/aus/headcanons for not just andre, but for other characters and oc’s as well.:-) i felt like it’d be fitting for him; especially since he’s a bit of a country boy and i like to think he likes to garden and that him and oscar would often just lay underneath the trees n stuff.:-) unfortunately, someone beat me to the punch; i could have put a bunch of dashes in my url but...idk i’ve personally never liked putting dashes in my urls for some reason (ever since i was like, 10 when i had my first website). so i wanted to find an alternative instead. i was going to put it fully in french, but i didn’t like how it sounded; so i just put garden in french instead (jardin). not my ideal url i wanted sunlit garden very badly but i think this is also fitting; especially since andre is french!:-)

what’s your favourite flower/tree/plant? I love nature wow. My favorite tree is definitely a Weeping Cherry Tree or Willow. My favorite flowers are sunflowers and roses! Plants in general, I just really love cacti? It’s a product of having family I adore in Arizona haha

how do you take your tea/coffee? With plenty of splenda and some milk

favourite candle scent? Vanilla, mostly. just sweet things

Whats your opinion on the headcanon that bakugou is hard of hearing because of how loud his explosions are? If you dont mind my asking

I think I answered this q on this blog already? Maybe? But anyway, I don’t exactly mind it, but I can’t say I share the headcanon myself - for one, because I’m of the opinion that their bodies are built to withstand a safe use of their quirks (a bit like you can’t break a leg by simply walking, you know), so in general I’m not a fan of headcanons that include damages caused by simply doing what their bodies were born to do? 

But also because generally, even under the assumption that his body isn’t made to hold up with his explosions, isn’t it awfully convenient how only his ears take damage in these scenarios? What about his eyes? How come he can still see with no problems even with the continuous exposure to the explosions’ light? How about his hair? How come he can stand so close to fire without it ever being damaged by it? His palms have thicker skin and we know that thanks to his UA file, but what about the rest of his body? How come he can stand smack in the middle of an Howitzer Impact without getting even slightly burnt? When you say “only his ears aren’t made to withstand his explosions” what you’re telling me is that his whole body is tailord to deal with his quirk but his ears, and that just feels unrealistic to me - by which I mean, when this is the scenario we’re talking about, you can’t give the fault of the damage to Bakugou’s quirk. It’s a problem his body has, not a natural consequence of having that sort of quirk. And imho with those premises you sort of end up with a different kind of story, you’re supposed to write it differently - that’s what I think, at least

Ah, this is also another reason why I’m not a huge fan of the headcanon - don’t get me wrong! If you like it then go on, I’m not trying to stop anyone from enjoying ideas and possibilities!! But personally I like Bakugou not having any reason to be loud-mouthed and rude, that’s just his personality and how the environment he grew up in made him, and lately I’ve seen the hc used to justify his behaviour more than I like? Bakugou being an asshole is just who he is, and I love it! I love that his life made him like that and I love that he’s working hard to fix that flaw, giving him an external reason, something he has no control over, to justify his personality changes the core of his character too much, and that’s not something I’d ever want to do tbh

And it’s also cool to think that he was somewhat genetically engineered to be better in a fight to compensate for a lack of earing (though again, why only his ears and not his eyes or his sense of tact too), but that goes to cut on all the hard work he put in becoming as good as he is, right? If that’s what you like than who am I to stop you! But Bakugou’s hardworking nature is one of the things I love about him, I don’t really feel like taking away from him all the effort and work he put through the years in becoming as good as he is now

Uh, well, it’s not like I “haven’t considered” doing it, but more than a collage it’s… just how I always draw? Only usually I cut the pics for each of them to be a different image so they’re easier to see, while yesterday I was too lazy to do that and left them all on the same canvas haha so I guess yeah next time I’ll feel like drawing krkm if you’d like I can leave the drawings all in one pic, that’s just less work for me after all lol

all alone just started playng this is terrible lets get it

so day6. a band i only found out about in late june (thank u boxy) and before this i only ever listened to bts and mx bc my friends stan them so i thought i was gonna expect boys dancing, the usual. 

i clicked i smile and i lost my fucking shit as soon as i saw the instruments because prior to day6 i was a big 5sos fan so this was rly resonating to me tbh and i was just !!! so fukcng excited??? i never intended to even get into day6 honestly??? but after witnessing how good they are and watching about all of the available mvs at that point i was completely in awe so i caved a created a stan twitter for them.

now, this isnt even the most of it. after becoming a fan i realized how much more these 5 boys are. they compose (if im not wrong) and brian writes lyrics for the songs each month because of their everyday6 project and again, im wow-ed because??? the amount of dedication???? they went from releasing 2 title tracks in 2 years to releasing 12 title tracks and 12 bside tracks in a single year. they havent released the december song yet but haviing to work on 2 or more songs in 4 weeks is fucking amazing if you ask me. 

theyre really talented and theyre just so versatile (am i using that word correctly) and each month their songs sound different. this project has given them the opportunity to try new things and you can hear the steady improvement in each of their vocals (dowoonie not so much since he barely gets lines, but we all know hes working hard) and if you listen to their debut song - kongchu and compare it to the version they released along with sunrise it just???? the drumming has even changed from the original version nd its so noticeable that whenever i hear kongchu from 2015 i know its the old ver

to add to those, they do vlives every week and although those vlives are always scheduled it still makes my day seeing them and watching them do the usual. 

one thing im upset about is that how they barely promote themselves, they rarely get on variety shows (the most is individual schedules) and we, as mydays never really get to know the boys so its harder to fall for them as a whole. i dont know if its jyp or day6′s decision but if this is how they want to be known for - their music only, then so be it. we still have jae’s presence on youtube, music access and asc. thats the most we can get and it makes it difficult for us to learn about the rest but thats okay.

another thing. their concerts are something i always look forward to (even though my interest has died down a bit;) their concerts are just so fun to listen to?? there’ll always be mydays who stream the concert so everyone else can listen to them play and they sound so good live it drives me crazy. mydays are always so hyped and whenever mydays sing along it just gives me goosebumps??? bc theyre so???? good????? 

tldr; day6 deserve more, following wise and promotions wise because they work so hard and once this project ends i hope they’ll manage to rest but still remain as a presence that will be known instead of returning to jyp’s dungeon.

Introducing JAKE KELLER -- the product of Linc’s late-night journey through GIFs of sad boys™ earlier this week! Below the cut you will find a brief history, fun facts, and my general blurbs about this artsy lil mofo. ( Also me being a trash biscuit but honestly what’s new. )

Once upon a time, an infant boy was given up for adoption in Texas by a nineteen year old mother who, after much thought and consideration, deemed that her abilities to parent wouldn’t suffice. It was, perhaps, a selfless act in guaranteeing her child a shot at the best life -- but that doesn’t mean said child, now twenty-two and in the spotlight, can’t resent her for it.

With striking green-blue eyes, the child was taken in by foster parents in the suburbs of Austin within a few weeks, and that baby boy came to be known as Jake Keller. Bright-eyed and curious, he dazzled the Keller family and their friends, even managing to befriend their neighbor’s parakeet after it escaped. Synopsis: young Jake Keller was a fucking charmer. Intelligent, adventurous, observant -- by the time he was three, the Kellers had led him to memorize all of the major world capitals. And, quite impressively, the young boy began to give whimsical water color paintings to anyone and everyone with whom he crossed paths. ( One day, when Jake was five, he got screamed at by a neighbor for riding his bike on their lawn and crushing their flower bed. The next day, he tacked a painting of nearly identical flowers onto the ground he’d ruined. )

In elementary school, Jake was the type to draw on his friends’ hands, arms, and jeans. Layla King even asked him to doodle in Sharpie on the toes of her brand new hightops. Pictionary was Jake’s calling -- the other kids loved when it was his turn to draw.

Up until his ninth birthday, his family life and school life couldn’t be better. That is, until his foster parents noticed how much time he was spending with Colin Redford and caught them linking pinkies in the back yard. To the Kellers’ dismay, other parents at the fourth grade open house gushed about how strange it was when their children, bewildered, came home on the first day of school describing how Jake had kissed Colin on the cheek at recess.

So, what’s a foster family to do when they discover shit they don’t like? Play the system. When Jake returned home from riding his bike around one night, he overheard his foster parents -- really parents, to him -- frantically discussing what to do with him. “We’ll get him gone, Karen,” his foster father had reasoned, “I’ve got a plan.” The next day was Jake’s last day at school before he was taken away by DCF and plunked into a group home for children struggling aggression. The nine-year-old was asked to testify, on record, about attacking his foster mother -- allegations, of course, he truthfully denied. However, the agent overseeing his case didn’t believe him, so in the group home he stayed. Forced to grow a thick skin, Jake learned that the only way not to get hurt was to burn through people before they’d attempt to burn him. He became involved in numerous fights, often sporting scraped knuckles, black eyes, split lips. Because of this, he was moved from the group home to another foster care situation when he was 12, after his social worker finally deemed him “unfit for group life.” At his subsequent foster homes, however, Jake never lasted long -- being without a real family led to teasing, to threats of harm, and... well. He learned not to let people push him around.

After being suspended from school for breaking another kid’s nose and arm, Jake entered school-mandated anger management classes. He completed his GED through online courses, moved again from group home to group home with stricter, more militant rules. In the anger management courses and meetings, Jake rekindled his love for art.

One of Jake’s few friends from foster care reached out to him about a trip to California when they turned 18 and were finally out of the system. They road tripped from Colorado, where they’d both ended up. On a whim, Jake auditioned for the role of Charlie Taylor in Zenith’s Suburbia. It was more of a joke than anything, but just before they were about to leave California a week later, Jake got a call saying he’d received the role. So he scrounged up enough money from his savings to buy a small studio apartment in Hollywood and began living life as an actor.

The fame has been interesting for him. He’s always been charismatic, but due to his childhood/teen years, negative press advances put him on edge. He’s come close to smacking paparazzi a few times for getting too close, but so far he’s been in the clear. Still has a short fuse, though.

Recently he upgraded to a larger loft apartment, designating the largest room to be a studio where he paints, sketches, and creates regularly. It’s a hobby for him more than recognition, but a few of his paintings have been sold and circulated.

He loves cinnamon rolls? His fave breakfast in the history of ever, I swear. He’ll never admit it, but it’s because that’s what he’d always have with his first foster family on Sunday mornings, before things went to shit and he, well... went through hell and back.

Um like I don’t wanna make a big deal out of this bUT! HEHASANADORABLETEXANACCENT. <3

Allergic to pet dander? He gets all sniffly and his eyes get itchy. Not anything a Benadryl won’t fix, so.... Yes. He will still snuggle with your dog. He’ll just be sniffling a lot later.

Obviously his character on the show doesn’t have it though so a lot of times on set he’ll speak with a plain, blank slate American accent. But once he’s off set? Southern charmer. At the bars, people eat it up. This ain’t his first rodeo. (Tbh I don’t even think that fits, I just wanted to say it... @me please stop.)

Wanted Connections:

People he met along the way as he hopped from group home to foster home, etc. I feel this this would’ve taken him all around the Midwest. 

That friend from foster care!! One of the very few people he kept around from his past, honestly.

Someone who gets under his skin. Jake tries very hard not to lash out but this person really pushes his buttons.

Squad!!! He’s like, really charismatic most of the time? Sociable. Especially now, since the fame’s more of a chill fact of life.

PR relationship. Jake is good at separating his personal life from his professional life, but it’d be cool if we could fuck with that a little. Cause some #drama.

Coffeeshop/thrift shop/general excursion pals. I imagine Jake’s really into the #aesthetic of photographs, even though painting/sketching is his main thing? So someone who’s willing to scope out dope photoshoot places and pose 15 billion times for him -- and vice versa.

Chapter One: Life As It Is

I'll be honest. My life pretty much sucked.

Maybe it was because I had asthma, or the fact that I was just born small, but no matter the reason, I still remained an easy target for bullies to torment. Not that I ever complained back to them, of course. If I did, I'd be in much more trouble than I already was.

Often, I thought about standing up for myself. To face the bullies, or to confront my father who completely avoided me, and tell them all what I really thought. I sure had a lot of things to say. But the moment I reached my school, or saw my father's sour expression when he saw me, my courage immediately vanished. I couldn't change the way things were. That was just life as it was.

And, soon, I learned to live with it.

Sure, some days were more painful than others, and sure I often grew irritated with my surroundings, but I kept going. My mother was the reason why, actually. She'd whisper encouraging words into my ear as she checked up on me at night, when it seemed that no one else cared, she'd always be there just to listen, and she would always stick up for me when my father's language was too harsh.

Oh, my father… Stoick Vast Haddock, Mayor of the quaint little town of Berk. He had only been given the job a few years back, but that was all it took for him to forget that I existed. I missed my father a lot these days, with the bullying going on at school and whatnot. He used to set aside some of his time to talk to me, or spend a day fishing at the pond when I was down. He used to. Now, I barely ever seem to see him, and when I do, we usually just share a quick "hello" and "goodbye", but he'd never even look me in the eye.

Mom always said we'd spend more time together in the future; she promised that, if I wait only a little longer, his schedule would die down.

But it never did.

In addition to family problems, I had school problems as well. No surprise there. It wasn't that I was failing my classes. No, not at all. It just had to do with the other students. And the bullies.

First, there was the giant boy, Simon, who absolutely despised me- but everyone called him Snotlout because of a rather disgusting incident from the year before. He was the worst out of all of the other bullies, never ceasing to make fun of something I did, or cause me to trip on my way to the next class. And to top it all off, he was also my cousin, with a father that had serious anger issues teaching gym class at my school. How I was related to such people, I still had no idea.

Then there were the prankster twins, Remy (Ruff) and Tom (Tuff). Whenever anyone saw a loose guinea pig in the hallway, or a science test tube exploded confetti, the twins were always behind it. Unfortunately, they had taken a liking of using me as their "experimenter", and I often came home with my hair smoldering with smoke, or wearing a sign that said KICK ME! on the back.

There were other bullies as well: Alvin, Dagur, Savage, and a few others. They never seemed to tire of humiliating me throughout the years.

Next was Fishlegs. Now, he wasn't exactly a bully, but he did hang out with the group. He never personally said something offensive to me, yet it hurt to know that he would always just stand there and watch me getting beat up without helping.

Finally, there was Amanda Hofferson- but she preferred everyone to call her Astrid, due to her love of asteroids. She was a breathtakingly beautiful girl, with a stunning blonde braid and shimmering blue eyes that would captivate anyone. But I wouldn't want to get on her bad side any day. She was the toughest girl in the whole school, and I knew she wouldn't hesitate to punch or kick somebody if she felt the need. I had had a crush on Astrid ever since I first laid eyes on her, and I still dreamed of her noticing me and giving me one of her rare smiles. But how could that ever happen? I didn't even think she knew my name.

Still. Underneath all my… well… myself, I had some interesting qualities. First off, I could draw. I could sketch, paint, doodle away for hours without a care in the world. And my art wasn't bad at all. My mother keeps on saying my art is one of the most prettiest things she's ever seen- but then again, she's my mother. What else could I expect her to say? I was also pretty smart for my age, and excelled in math, science, and languages. I don't believe I've ever gotten below an A for a grade.

Now that all these introductions are done, you're probably wondering who I am, why I'm here, and wondering just what kind of story I have to share.

Well, I'll answer for you.

My name is Hiccup Haddock, and despite what everyone else believes, I'm more than I seem to be.

I let out a tired sigh as I entered the school building. Almost automatically, I hunched over, trying to keep as invisible as I could. I wasn't in the mood for bullying today. I had had to stay up late the night before studying for a math test, and I would be too tired to try to fight back against the bullies.

Well, not that I would win, anyway.

I made it to my homeroom on time, which just happened to be math class itself. I exhaled in relief when no one tripped me in the hall. Maybe today wouldn't be that bad.

After finding my seat, I tossed my backpack on the floor and dug out my math book. The room was almost full by now, but my teacher, Mr. Ryker, still waited with obvious impatience. I frowned. I had never liked him, as he was always trying to prove me wrong or get me in some sort of trouble. And it just so happened that his younger brother, Mr. Viggo Grimborn was the principal of the whole school. That meant if I got in trouble in math class, I'd get in trouble with the principal too.

Mr. Ryker gave the clock an annoyed glare, like he wanted it to speed up. There was still one more minute before the bell rang, and he wasn't happy that he still had to wait. Finally, the steady stream of students died down, which meant everyone had taken a seat. The room was full- except, there was still one place empty.

I felt myself blushing when I realized just whose desk it was. It was hers.

"Sorry I'm late, Mr. Grimborn," I heard her say as she entered the classroom. "My dog, Stormfly, got sick last night, and my mom had to take her to the vet before dropping me off here."

My head turned in her direction, and I could feel my bright green eyes widen with awe. Astrid Hofferson was standing right there. I tried to seem relaxed, but that was impossible. Astrid is right there. Ten feet away from me. Living. Breathing. Being her beautiful self…

Mr. Ryker snapped me out of my trance with a sharp comeback to Astrid. "See that it does not happen again, Amanda."

"Astrid," Astrid corrected, shifting her backpack on her shoulder.

My math teacher rolled his eyes. "In my class, we go by our birth names. We don't go by nicknames of such."

"But what about Hiccup?" Astrid pointed out. "He has a nickname."

I froze. Astrid had said my name. She knew I existed… that I was in the same room as her…that I was someone worthy enough to know the name of... heat rushed to my cheeks. "Um, actually, it's not a nickname," I said, surprising Astrid by speaking. I doubted she'd ever even heard me talk before. "I was given the name Hiccup at birth."

Astrid blinked, studying me. I was acutely aware of her dazzling blue eyes piercing into my soul. "Really?"

All I could do was nod. She was talking to me.

"Please take a seat, Ms. Hofferson," Mr. Ryker quipped, shutting the door. "We're already late enough as it is."

Astrid nodded. "Of course, sir." She made her way through the sea of desks until she reached her own, which was on the other side of the room. I tried to make eye contact in case she wanted to acknowledge me, but she was too busy getting out her books to notice. Besides, Snotlout was in the way- and that was when he noticed I was sitting right next to him.

Snotlout glared over at me, his fists tightening on his math book. Just the way his sneer was twisted made me shiver. "You don't stand a chance with Astrid, Hiccup," he hissed, keeping his eyes on Mr. Ryker in case he would be called out. "Face it, Useless. No one likes you. And certainly not Astrid."

Oh? And she'd prefer you more? I wanted to say back, but I held my tongue. Arguing with Snotlout would only get me a sure black eye later on, and I didn't wish for that. Still, the words hurt, so I forced myself to drop my gaze and stare down at my desk, silent. I heard Snotlout snicker in triumph from beside me; my heart sunk. Yet another battle lost...

Sighing, I looked up at Mr. Ryker, not at all eager to learn the things I already knew.

As I said before, life sucked.

But it wouldn't be until later on I would realize just how much.

When I was in high school and college, I remember feeling bored. The world was wide open and the possibilities of creating and recreating myself were endless, but everything good in life seemed to be ahead of me. I was always waiting for that good part.

Now, I’m no longer preparing myself for the future. Perhaps I’ve already arrived.

101 Hobbies to Start in 2019 – Listed By Types of Hobbies

As much as we love our work, lately our work has become a problem. With travel blogging, there isn’t much separation between work and life, and we’ll admit that we’re both workaholics.

We got swept up in the busyness of NYC and only realized recently how much we started to value work more than anything else. One day we made it a goal to take the evening off, and when we realized we didn’t know how to fill our time, we went right back to work.

This might sound simple, but for us, it hasn’t been so easy. We also need something that we love to do for ourselves and not so we can post about it, which is weirdly a prevalent part of the present human experience.

The Benefits of Hobbies

A few reasons I want to find some new hobbies next year:

To play and relax – We need to find hobbies that can make us zero money and that might possibly bore everyone. haha

To sharpen my mind – I have such terrible memory now and may well be on my way to having early onset Alzheimer’s (it’s in the family and it freaks me out).

For personal growth, enrichment and emotional health – something I’m constantly needing work on.

For better physical health – we already rock climb, but I think we need some activiities with cardio.

Other benefits include:

Also, with our blog, you may already know we’re all about exploring our hometowns and greater backyards. We firmly believe that adventure starts within yourself by cultivating a spirit of adventure. Many of these can be done at home. How much more local can you get?

Some of our friends are peak baggers, which is a form of collecting where you summit a list of peaks of your choice (ie the 14ers in Colorado). Also check out our 25 best hikes in the world.

Rock Climbing

It’s a great way to exercise without feeling like you’re exercising. Frequenting the local climbing gym has also been one of the best ways for us to make friends as we move from city to city. Here are some beginner climbing tips for getting started.

Canyoneering

Get started by going on a guided canyoneering trip. This is also a great guide to get started.

Slacklining

A lot of climbers also slackline to work on their balance, but there are also people who only slackline. This is the kit we want to set up at home once we move out of our tiny NYC apartment.

Mountaineering

Mountaineering is taking hiking to the next level by adding in more technical aspects. You can pick up gear at REI, and they can always show you the best gear. They also have the best return policy.

Mountain Biking

Explore the outdoors on two wheels. Pick up some mountain biking faves here.

Camping

Camping can be as relaxing or as extreme as you want. Just as an example, we have this cheaper tent for car camping and this one for long backpacking trips.

Glamping

If you want to experience the outdoors but still need the comforts, glamping is the way to go. This is one of our favorite glamping trips.

Kayaking, Canoeing, or SUP

Kayaking, canoeing, and/or SUP are great when you travel because it lets you explore areas most people don’t get to. This was one of our first times kayaking.

Rafting

Try this out by going on rafting trips with guides. You can then pick up some gear when you’re ready to take it more seriously.

Skiing or Snowboarding

We’ve met quite a few people who move to a new city just because of their love of skiing or snowboarding. If you’re worried about the cold, just be sure you have solid winter clothes and you’ll be all set.

Scuba Diving

We had always been interested in scuba diving and finally took classes and got certified in San Diego. We’re whiskey divers now.

Fishing, Crabbing, or Lobstering

Here’s a great beginner fishing kit to get your feet wet. We also wrote this guide on how to go crabbing on the Oregon Coast.

Archery

A great way to start is by taking lessons at a local archery club.

Bowling

Regardless of how serious you take bowling, if you go more than a few times a year, you should pick up your own shoes to save money (men’s and women’s).

Cycling comes in many different forms and is a great way to explore and challenge yourself. Check out cycling gear here.

Golfing

Golfing is great hobby to pick up and something you can do while traveling around the world. Read this book on stuff all golfers should know.

Horse Riding

Whether you want to become a full fledged equestrian or just horseback ride when you’re traveling, there are plenty of different options to get into this.

Ice Skating

Lutz Jump, Twizzle, and Salchow Jump around the ice. Or if you’re like us, just try to learn skating backwards first. If you’re in NYC, here are the best ice skating rinks to visit.

Martial Arts or Kickboxing

I’ve been taking kickboxing with a gf of mine on and off for a couple years. I would borrow gloves, but I always had my own hand wraps.

Parkour / Ninja Warrior

Ever since Ninja Warrior became popular, gyms have been popping up everywhere for free running and NW training. You can even start to build a homemade course.

Paintball

A couple of our friends were semi-pro paintballers. There are arenas all over the world and you can even pick up your own paintball gun to practice at home.

Running

Jacob used to run a 10k every year with his dad and has done a half marathon. Neither of us really enjoy it any more but we have a lot of friends who do. We love these shoes (men’s + women’s) since they’re great for travel and running.

Skateboarding

We picked up one of these pennyboards to learn this year but have been intimidated by the car and pedestrian traffic in NYC.

Surfing

We’ve been surfing a few times and even took surfing lessons while we lived in San Diego. We’d love to get back into when we’re closer to the ocean.

Swimming

Swimming is one of the best forms of exercise especially as you get older since you don’t put as much stress of your joints.

Join a Sports League

Join your local rec league, whether it’s basketball, tennis, ultimate frisbee, or Jacob’s latest obsession – pickleball.

Yoga

We’ve never gotten into yoga, but our yogi friends swear by these yoga mats.

I did not know this was a thing until one of our friends got into it before his kid’s birthday party. All it took was a basic kit and a bunch of YouTube videos.

This is another great hobby that has a ton of resources and kits so that you can do it on your own.

Finished my exercise obligations and whatnot.

July 2

Got up around 8:30-ish this morning. Annoyed about the alarm not going off, apparently. Even though the van arrived fortuitously later than usual, I still had to leave in a rush.

First thing I did at the facility was preparing what notes I could before Seeking Safety Group. We did a fun game responding to prompts from a hat.

Then, I got to therapy. Mostly talked about HW stuff, reasonably productive, I’d say. I also slimmed down my night routine checklist, which I had thought about doing before but now seemed more worthwhile? Less stuff to worry about accounting for.

The last thing I did while at the facility was socialize and do the DD. 40 plank rotations with EC. Did think to do it once home after a false start, but I think getting over it over with was better.

Got home, got roped into playing rummy and making the family dinner. Also spent time on the usual before getting in the rest of my exercise for the day.

First, Day 28 of the NC. “Precision“, meaning shoulder taps. I went for 1′ and counted 58 reps by the time was up. That was just about doable.

Last, Day 28 of the PUP. Lower body work. It took A LOT of willpower to keep my legs up for their whole sequence. But like the last few days, I was watching SaSi to get me through it. It was very helpful and I was amused by having brief jelly legs afterwards. :,D

Okay, I’ll never not snort at “heeey prude, your art is baaad.“

Though I did think to draw-stream today... I was too overtired to be up for it. So much so that I wound up getting to bed BEFORE midnight.

July 3

Because I got to bed at a reasonable hour, I got up at one today (~8AM.)

One of the first things I opted to get done today was my exercises.

First, today’s DD. 2′ knee strikes with EC. As usual, I enjoy this kind of exercise! I counted 84 reps by the time was up, and I did get a little winded at that pace, too. :D

Second, Day 29 of the NC. “Courage“, meaning overhead punches. Pretty easily managed to go for 2′, I counted 208 punches thrown for the durations, and like the DD, I enjoyed it! :D

Last, Day 29 of the PUP. Upper body work, involving knee push-ups. Nnng, my push-ups were sooo sloppy today. But I’m just going to accept this performance as a compromise. The later half got quite challenging to get through in between that and the overhead punches.

Then, I did the dishes, gamed, and watched some more Good Omens before getting a therapy journal entry drafted.

After all that, I started streaming some art, before getting to bed.

July 4

I woke up a bit before noon, today.

One of the first things I did today was most of my intended exercise...

First, today’s DD. 40 knee-ins & twists with EC. This was pretty tough, but manageable. :P

Last, Day 30 of the Ninja Challenge. “Commitment“, meaning squat hold punches. I went for 1′, today. And I thought this was a very fun to go out for this challenge! I do like this exercise a lot, and it’s pretty intense! :D

Didn’t have enough time after that to do my program before needing to go with fam to the grandparents’ place for festivities. (And after all was said and done, it got too late and I had pretty low energy to do it.)

While over there, we had some dinner and played some rummy. I also doodled Remus, as seen in that recent photo post. Then, we went out to see the local fireworks show.

Most people were in the parking lot of a strip mall, rather than at river-side, closer to where the mortars were set up. So streetlamps did mar things a bit (that and the understandable regulations in CA). But I found enjoyment, nevertheless. And the smell of people letting off various fireworks in the lot was kinda nostalgic (if mildly overwhelming at times, due to caffeine and some being very bright/noisy.)

I mostly spent the rest of my night doing a bit of art research.

July 5

I woke up a bit after 11AM today.

As far as exercise went, I had to play a bit of catch-up despite it being an “active rest day.“

First, today’s DD. 1′ plank punches with EC. I counted 50 reps by the end. That was pretty fun to do, mostly for the punching part! :D

(After getting roped into playing more cards...)

Last, Day 30 of the Power Up Program. The last day and the last day involving those side planks. Multiple drops for recovery happened. I did NOT enjoy that. But I’m just glad that I finished it.

I later made the fam some dinner. Intend to try to do that draw-stream after I post this with a summary of experience & my plans for what to do next.

Summary of Experience

I ALMOST managed to get my program and challenge done on schedule and in sync. But oh well.

I finished the Ninja Challenge in July 4. I generally enjoyed doing this one! I rather liked the variety of exercises - with a few personal faves sprinkled in (like “balance”, “grip”, “mindfulness”, and all the combat stuff). My levels of challenge were:

Level 3 (brutal - 2′) for 14 days

Level 2 (hard - 1′) for 14 days

Level 1 (normal - 30″) for 2 days

I finished the Power Up Program in July 5. I wound up having to make compromises for ~7 days of this program (modifying exercises and/or taking brief breaks; maybe more if I counted the balance days). But I liked MOST of this program, despite how much burn was involved. As usual, I’m going to rank the types of days from most to least liked again.

Upper Body (Grip) - These really got the forearms burning, as well the rest of the arms - but I did enjoy pressing through them! Especially because I know I need to give my wrists more TLC. :D

Upper Body (Standing) - As with above, I didn’t drop the arms once! I think for both of these, knowing I have been able kept my arms up for around & more than 5′ before in DDs really shored up my confidence. By no means a cake walk, but doable! \o/

Lower Body (All Fours) - There was a lot to like with these days. Also tough, but I didn’t need to take more than a couple compromises - and they were mostly near the start.

Lower Body (Balance) - I rather liked these days because of the balance work. I’m not super sure if I should count them all as compromised - given I allowed my foot to tap ground for the swings, to maintain ROM. But I think I managed to stay balanced for all the holds.

Lower Body (Seated) - These were definitely reminiscent of the Iron Bar Workout and got pretty brutal! I managed to keep things moving, even if it meant rocking back to assist the lifts (But I will count it as close enough to the spirit of the program.... because oof.) :,D

Upper Body (Knee Push-Ups) - I appreciated that these were all KNEE push-ups. But for the durations/loads involved... my form got frequently sloppy. :P

Lower Body (Side Elbow Planks) - Honestly? These were the only days I really didn’t look forward to doing. And most of the days I had to compromise with were these ones. orz

What Next?

Tomorrow, I think I’ll run the Target 10 & Core Control Challenges. Seems to be a pretty good balance and variety of work in between them! May also do an extra set of the former modded down for warm-ups (High knees > march steps, jumping jacks > step jacks, etc.).

I have been debating on whether to do Hell Week soon... I’ll think about it again after these arrangements. I think I need to shore up my cardio before I jump in that one (which I think Target 10 will help with nicely). :P

2: do you like the feeling of cold air on your cheeks on a wintery day? Yes, but only if it’s snowing big fat snowflakes.

3: what random objects do you use to bookmark your books? Receipts, Grocery Lists, and Candy Wrappers, lol

4: how do you take your coffee/tea?I like it very sweet, with one dollop of cream. Or just black hazelnut.

5: are you self-conscious of your smile? Yes. It’s very big, and I really dislike drawing attention to my mouth.

6: do you keep plants? No, Each time I try, I wind up killing it. Even the hearty “hard to kill” ones.

7: do you name your plants? Nope.

8: what artistic medium do you use to express your feelings? Magazine Collage, and music.

9: do you like singing/humming to yourself? Yes

10: do you sleep on your back, side, or stomach? I’m a right side sleeper. 

11: what’s an inner joke you have with your friends? One Word. Macarena.

12: what’s your favorite planet? For reals? We’re supposed to have a favorite? Earth…I guess?

13: what’s something that made you smile today? Not a damn thing, actually. I haven’t laughed or giggled or chuckled, either. That’s unusual.

14: if you were to live with your best friend in an old flat in a big city, what would it look like? That depends on which best friend you’re talking about. Like, I actually don’t have one best friend.

15: go google a weird space fact and tell us what it is!   *Do constellations look different other planets?*  The planets of the Solar System do revolve around the same central body, but they do so on different orbits, so they will observe the stars from slightly different angles. This will make the constellations we see from here slightly different from the ones you see from there.

16: what’s your favorite pasta dish?Chicken Fettuccine Alfredo

17: what color do you really want to dye your hair? I’ve always wanted to go completely blonde, or smurf blue.

18: tell us about something dumb/funny you did that has since gone down in history between you and your friends and is always brought up. That fucking time I sat on a goddamned apple pie. It was a Christmas party, and I had excused myself to the porch to have a cigarette. I sat on a chair, and it occurred to me that it was warm, and didn’t pay it any mind. I don’t see well in the dark, and there was a towel on the seat, covering the pie, so I didn’t notice it until I got up. SO fucking embarrassing since I knew literally, two people, at this party.

19: do you keep a journal? what do you write/draw/ in it? I tend to doodle spirals, or repetitive lines, kind of like concentric circles. I write about how I’m feeling in that moment, the things that are randomly floating through y head, stuff I need to remember, grocery lists, phone numbers and appointments, and other random bits. I carry a hard covered spiral bound book or a children’s school notebook at all times with a pen.

20: what’s your favorite eye color? I really do enjoy all eye colors. No one in particular. Each eye is different, and I rather enjoy looking into them and noticing the variations. But I rarely do this.

21: talk about your favorite bag, the one that’s been to hell and back with you and that you love to pieces. I don’t have one in specific that I think of in these terms. I pitch any bag that carries a major association with. I do, however, have a green duffel bag that I’ve had since my first trip to the states with my first husband. That’s nearly 20 years old now.

22: are you a morning person? I can be. But I prefer waking in late morning.

23: what’s your favorite thing to do on lazy days where you have 0 obligations? Nap. Listen to soothing music. Watch the leaves moving in the trees. Curling up on the couch. Watching a favorite movie. Eat yummy food. And then nap some more.

24: is there someone out there you would trust with every single one of your secrets? My followers, of course. I haven’t given my tumblr address to anyone in my family, or my close friends. There’s actually only two people whom I’ve shared this site with that I know IRL. You’re all privy to my worst secrets.

25: what’s the weirdest place you’ve ever broken into? An old Jail? I dunno, breaking into something isn’t really my forte.

26: what are the shoes you’ve had for forever and wear with every single outfit? Nada. Crocs from the dollar store, hahaha. Not a fashonista at all, and gave up matching shoes before I had my second child.

27: what’s your favorite bubblegum flavor? Excel Green. Whatever flavor that is. Spearmint I think?

28: sunrise or sunset? Depends. If I’m with someone I love, Sunrise. If I’m real fucking down, Sunset.

29: what’s something really cute that one of your friends does and is totally endearing? Christ. This is a thing?! I dunno, they banter back with my sarcastic insults.

31: what is your opinion of socks? do you like wearing weird socks? do you sleep with socks? do you confine yourself to white sock hell? really, just talk about socks. OMG. I’m a toe sock junkie. I prefer the fuzzy, soft kind of socks if the floors are cold. I like Toe socks because I can wear flip flops with them, and I call them my campfire socks. Less Mosquito bites if I wear those during an evening campfire. I have a lot of crazy patterned socks because my ex and the kids tend to steal them if they’re plainly colored.

32: tell us a story of something that happened to you after 3AM when you were with friends. Uhhh…I sobered up? No, really. There aren’t a whole lot of people I’ve stayed up all night with. It’s my time. It’s private.

33: what’s your fave pastry? Strudel.

34: tell us about the stuffed animal you kept as a kid. what is it called? what does it look like? do you still keep it? I have two stuffies I got as gifts as a kid. I don’t know why I keep them. There’s no association with them at all. Maybe because most of the things I had as a child were so often thrown away…Huh. I haven’t named them. Both are bears. One is on all fours, on is sitting on it’s backside. Now that I think of it, I really should just pitch them out.

35: do you like stationary and pretty pens and so on? do you use them often? I <3 comfortable, smooth writing pens. And when I find one, it stays with me until it goes dry, and then I miss it for months, and mourn it’s loss. I once had a pen I kept for seven years before it dried out, no joke. Stationary makes no diff to me at all.

36: which band’s sound would fit your mood right now? Umm. The Cranberries.

37: do you like keeping your room messy or clean? Clean. I feel good when my room is clean.

38: tell us about your pet peeves! I fucking hate wet towels on my bed. When people refer to the USA as “America” and not the United States, they aren’t the only goddamned country on this continent.

39: what color do you wear the most? Black. I love bright happy colors, but when I had my first child, my husband and mother in law insisted they help me build my wardrobe. It was all pastels or white & black, and a lot of khaki. So, I gave up my own sense of style. I wear a lot of black.

40: think of a piece of jewelry you own: what’s it’s story? does it have any meaning to you? I have a diamond and Ruby ring that my kinds’ dad gave me as an “I’m sorry” gift. He didn’t take my side in an argument with his parents. He didn’t agree with me.

73: what are some of your worst habits? I chew my nails, and I text paragraphs before I consider how it sounds when people are hurting and I’m comforting//advising.

74: describe a good friend of yours without using their name or gendered pronouns. They listen without judgement, give as much affection as I need, and let me cry. Then they cheer me up and make me laugh until I cry again. And finally, they feed me and put me to bed.

75: tell us about your pets! I have a white, Californian bunny, named Mr. Benjamin. One of my children is allergic to cats and the other dogs, and I had a terrible experience with a Hamster once. Traditional pets really aren’t our forte. Mr. B travels well, and is typically well behaved until you piss him off.

76: is there anything you should be doing right now but aren’t? Finding something for dinner, since mine was scooped by one my sons’ friends. Or cleaning because our home will be shown by a realtor tomorrow.

78: are you in the minion hateclub or fanclub? I think they’re cute, but only because they’re yellow.

79: what’s one of the cutest things someone has ever done for you? Hm.I really don’t know. Someone sent me a jar with sand and shells in it recently, but that was more thoughtful and sweet, not cute.

A Celiac's Creative Cooking Tips: How to Escape a Gluten Free Food Rut

Have you ever reflected on your last two weeks of meals and realized you've been eating the same handful of recipes? It can be easy to slip into a routine of eating, especially if you have celiac disease, food allergies or a certain dietary lifestyle (like paleo or vegan). I know from experience; as my Instagram shows, at least 85% of my body is probably made up of smoothies, snack plates, granola and stuffed spaghetti squash! 

As much I love routine and am addicted to these fan-favorite recipes, though, I still sometimes crave change - especially now that I have some extra time on my hands. So what's a celiac to do? Break out of her food rut of course!

If you're ready to embrace more experimentation in the kitchen - even with a "restricted" diet like gluten free, vegan, paleo, etc - here are five tricks anyone can use to break out of a food rut! 

1. Commit to a certain amount of new recipes per month - and keep it realistic.

Have you given up on making New Year's resolutions because you can never make them come true? Don't apply the same mindset to experimenting more in the kitchen. Research shows that people are more successful reaching goals - in various aspects of life, from weight loss to education - when they establish a set goal. Writing down your goal seems to push the odds in your favor even more! 

So, before you even start thinking about new recipes, decide what you're striving for - and keep it realistic. Instead of committing to two new recipes a week and feeling overwhelmed, start more conservatively - like four new recipes every month. Base your goal off of your time commitments, cost for ingredients and how much you really want to change up your diet in the first place. 

Or even write it in your planner!

Write down your goal, stick it on the fridge and move on from there. And, who knows. If you fall in love with experimenting, you can always increase your target number of new meals after a few weeks!

2. Reflect on what you actually like about your staple meals. 

What is it about your go-to meals that makes them, well, almost too delicious to not make? Looking at my favorite recipes - like smoothie bowls topped with granola and raisins or nacho spaghetti squash with homemade chips - I've realized they all have a common variable: lots of different textures and flavors. I'm not a "one-pot dinner" kind of gal - and that's OK. It just means I probably shouldn't try a ton of new one-pot dinners, since they usually aren't my favorite. 

Now it's your turn to analyze your favorite meals. Do you like spicy or just spiced? Vegetarian, vegan or lots of meat? High carb, high protein or high fat? Classic American comfort food or tastes from all over the globe?

I'm all about that creamy/crunchy/chewy combo!

Sure, the goal is for you to expand your diet with new dishes. However, by keeping some aspects of your meals the same, you're increasing the odds of actually liking your edible experiments. And what could be better than cooking a new dish and having it become a new favorite? 

3. Look for inspiration - on Instagram, in food magazines or from your favorite blogs. Even if you're the most creative person on the planet (or even just in your house), you can run out of culinary ideas every once in awhile. That's when outside research can come in handy. 

As a food blogger, I read my fair share of other food blogs. Want to know a secret, though? I only follow a handful of recipes step-by-step. Typically, I'll see a recipe - like one for black bean hummus - and I'll use it as a jumping off point to make smashed black beans served with a BFree Food's pita bread, roasted veggies and avocado. Or, I'll be scrolling through Instagram and see a killer plate of enchiladas - and I'll make some sweet potato Mexican nachos instead.

The point is that you don't need to look for the "perfect" recipe that sounds just like you; you can just skim recipes until you find one that you can easily adapt or one that sparks your culinary creativity. At the same time, you can also find inspiration in activities that have nothing to do with food. According to the shower effect, sometimes people's best ideas come when they aren't expecting them. Studies have also found that creativity can be triggered by taking a walk or simply doodling. So, if you really want to come up with a killer new meal, you might want to get out of the kitchen! 

4. Get organized and create a list of prospective recipes you want to try.

I don't know how many bookmarked recipes I have on my computer, but I'd guess I'm way past the 1,000 mark. As a result, looking for a new dinner can take a long time and feel so overwhelming, I just give up and bake a potato. To make experimenting easier, I created a new folder: Recipes to Try ASAP. Whenever I find a recipe that calls my taste buds' name, I (digitally) throw it in there. 

What my list looks like lately...

Regardless of how you find your recipes, you can - and, in my mind, should - adopt a similar strategy. If you set a goal to cook four new recipes every month, spend 15 minutes on the last day of each month to find some recipes that sound like you. Bookmark (or pin, print out, etc) around 10 of them, preferably ones that provide plenty of variety. This way, if you get home from work early or wake up in the mood to cook, you can scan your short list of possibilities, find one that meets your cravings that day, and get cookin'! 

5. Realize that eating the same meals is OK - and don't pressure yourself to change. I've eaten the same dinner for three nights in a row this week: leftover pizza on my fave homemade vegan crust with a side of avocado, green beans and lettuce. And you know what? Even though part of me thinks I should make something new for dinner tonight (if only just for Instagram), I'll probably have the exact same thing.

'Cause why wouldn't I eat this four nights straight?

And why should I feel like a "bad" food blogger or foodie because of that? Some people hate leftovers; some people (AKA me) thrive on them. And, if you're in the latter camp, don't feel obliged to completely change your ways. 

Getting out of a food rut can be as complex as trying to make a souffle for the first time...or as simple as putting BBQ sauce and pork on your sweet potato sliders instead of salmon and pesto. Experiment in the kitchen because you love food and want to expand the meals you regularly enjoy - not because you "need" to eat a more "interesting" diet or "need" to be a "true" food blogger.

The truth is, I'm a creature of habit - in my daily activities, my sleep schedule and, yes, my food. Sometimes, though, I want to taste something a little different or add another recipe to my revolving menu - and that's where breaking out of a food rut comes in handy.

And, as hard as adding some dietary variety can feel at times, the taste of a new, delicious meal makes the work 100% worth it!
