BIONIC READING is so fucking cool
🎊HELLO HELLO🎊
I was shoving all my saved tabs into folders so my desktop wouldn’t be such a fucking mess and it has come to my attention that the bionic reader website I’ve had saved for a while now lets you paste text, upload files, and link websites to convert to bionic text!!!
For those who don’t know what bionic reading is, it essentially bolds the portion of words that your brain needs to know what the word is, which increases reading speed and efficiency! The remaining word is filled in in your brain, so you’re spending less time trying to process an entire word. This is especially huge for people who have reading disorders and other neurodivergencies! I’ve never been formally tested for dyslexia, but I have ADHD and struggle immensely with reading text, especially on a screen, so any difficulty with reading often results in distraction. The first time I tried bionic reading, I was literally in awe because not only was I not spending excess time getting through each line, I actually processed the information I was reading. The fact that this is now accessible to anyone with an internet connection genuinely makes me cry happy tears.
AND THERE’S AN APP! I get to read Wikipedia articles on my phone with dark mode AND bionic text! I don’t have to choose!
Even if you don’t struggle with reading, please consider trying this out—it improves efficiency for everyone—so bionic reading is shown support and becomes more accessible and normalized! It’s so important for our community to have access to tools that help us navigate the world, and this is a huge step in the right direction. I’m so grateful to live in a time where this exists.
HERE is the site!
HERE is the app link!
P.s. You can copy+paste bionic text on Tumblr! Please use this on your long textposts!

I'd like to take a moment to talk about Essentialism.
In the simplest terms possible, Essentialism says that everything has a core aspect. An essence. It argues that a person's essence determines their behavior. It says a person did not simply steal, they are a thief.
Essentialism is problematic because it oversimplifies complex human behavior and reduces individuals to one-dimensional caricatures. It becomes a tool for fascism, breaking down nuanced understandings and fueling bigotry.
For example, if someone has had a negative experience with a person named Matt, it's tempting to attribute that experience to some inherent "Matt-ness" rather than considering the individual circumstances that led to the conflict.
Essentialism also aligns conveniently with ideas of criminality and punishment, perpetuating the notion that certain individuals inherently deserve harsh treatment. This perspective ignores the systemic factors that often contribute to criminal behavior, such as poverty and lack of opportunity.
In reality, the criminal justice system frequently creates crime by perpetuating cycles of poverty and discrimination. The notion that we can eradicate crime by simply getting rid of criminals is a dangerous and ineffective oversimplification.
Tumblr, in particular, has struggled to address dogpiles, which are often policed by punishing the accounts that initiate them. This approach, however, fails to address the underlying issues of large follower counts and a lack of effective moderation tools.
Even the CEO of Tumblr, amidst succumbing to the process that turns one harassment into another, had a brief moment of lucidity, realizing that the tools available to the user do not empower them to manage this mob cascade.

For my fellow neurodivergent people:
I found a chrome extension through tiktok, that bolds half of the word (= bionic reading). It's called "half bold" and it actually is also usable for tumblr
It helps me now with reading papers and court decisions!

Bionic reading facilitates the reading process by guiding the eyes through text with artificial fixation points. Simply, some parts of the words are displayed in bold text.
As a result, you are focusing on the highlighted text (usually initial letters of the words) and your brain completes the rest.
(via Have you tried bionic reading already?)

This "bionic reading" better not start being everywhere without the option to turn it of...
If you are going to use it on your posts, tag your posts as something specific (besides just 'bionic reading' because people still need to be able to talk about the issues) so people can filter it.
One person's accessibility tool is another person's literal headache.

Hey @staff can we talk about bionic reading?
because jester found out about it *yesterday* and stayed up all night and now it’s implemented into counter.social. Like as an option, for those who want/can be helped by it.
Is this on your radar at all? People there are loving it. It’s helping them read faster, and more accurately.

ANNOUNCE: Yesterday I heard about something cool called 'bionic reading'. I tweeted about it & a lot of folks were stunned. Today, 24 hours later, real-time 'Bionic Reading Mode' is fully integrated into https://counter.social as a preferences option in our app & desktop browser. 👍

Bionic Reading is a new method facilitating the reading process by guiding the eyes through text with artificial fixation points. As a result, the reader is only focusing on the highlighted initial letters and lets the brain center complete the word.
In a digital world dominated by shallow forms of reading, Bionic Reading aims to encourage a more in-depth reading and understanding of written content.
(and nah this isn’t me schilling for CoSo. I’m well aware it’s not the site for everyone. dude just has great response and turnaround)

can we get an ao3 skin that is like bionic reading?? idk how to use it and it doesnt seem free so help a little autistic guy
CSS is annoying in this because I can only target the first letters of a paragraph, and not the first letters of a word. (it’s a fairly requested feature tho) So, no, it can’t be done with skins.
But I know of this one bionic reading alternative which is free: https://not-br.neocities.org/ They are also in the phase of testing a chrome extension in early stages.

Bionic Reading (https://bionic-reading.com/) has come out with extensions. What’s good to know is that there IS a paywall after a number of readings done a day.
A free alternative is Not BR: https://not-br.neocities.org/
Chrome extension currently on trial***
