The jam is awful looking… it looks like a chunky chutney!
https://www.tumblr.com/the-cat-with-the-emerald-tiara-1/747918390559129600/time-for-the-eyeroll-it-looks-fucking-gross
My qualifications for the analysis you’re about to read is 9 years of PBJ school lunches and a lifelong addiction to jelly biscuits. (These gorgeous things, not the dry hockey pucks you Brits call scones.)
Preserves have big chunks of fruit, like whole or half pieces. They’re mixed with sugar and usually combined with jam, like so.
Tumblr media
Jam is fruit that has been crushed into a spreadable consistency. It’s still kinda chunky. This is an example:
Tumblr media
Jelly is fruit that has also been crushed and strained for its juices, which then get mixed with pectin or gelatin and heated. This is our jelly.
Tumblr media
Chutney isn’t really a thing here in the US as it may be in the UK. A lot of people will use chutney interchangeably with preserves, even though the spices are different. This is a tomato chutney.
Tumblr media
We tend to use preserves, jams, and jellies for sweets whereas chutney is used more for savory treats. There is also a version of chutney that gets strained smooth, but most of us over here wouldn’t call that chutney; it’s either jelly or butter.
We also have marmalades, which is preserves and citrus rinds boiled in sugar and water:
Tumblr media
And fruit butter, which is fruit cooked down to a paste, strained, and sweetened. You can use any kind of fruit. Apple butter is very popular. (My family actually makes apple butter in the fall. We do a pig-out and everyone goes home with jars of apple butter and containers of pork bbq.) This is apple butter.
Tumblr media
So this is Meghan’s product, courtesy of Delpfina’s instagram. Supposedly it’s strawberry jam.
Tumblr media
That doesn’t look like jam to me. Nor does it look like chutney, as anon suggested, to me.
That looks like preserves; big chunks of fruit with terrible spreadability.
Anyway. I’m hungry.

I'm interested in what the trains in your humanization prefer to eat (What if Henry loves apple charlottes?)
yes!!! eating is one of life’s biggest joys! always love talking and learning about food and watching people cook and eat and express their happiness, so this was a fun one to answer.
thomas a. billington: thomas needs something to chew or suckle on in the break room. think of any candy that your grandma would store on her detailed glass bowl. tootsie rolls, werther’s hard caramel candy, jolly ranchers… you get it. he doesn’t have any particulars when it comes to filling dishes and most of his diet consist of snacks and candies hence his thinner and shorter build.
edward pettigrew: he loves a good hot black tea with a side of rich tea biscuits or scones. he’s the guy who knows too much about tea. stomach ache? ginger tea. sleep aid? chamomile’s the way. for the more filling dishes, edward prefers light savory dishes with feta cheese involved. he’s really fond of fërgesë from his home country, but there’s no place on sodor that could make a mean one, so he settles with making it at his own home.
henry stanier: sliced apples! when he’s in a good mood, he’d shape them into little bunnies. he likes anything savory with a strong taste too, like his mother’s curry. henry loves a full course, hearty meal that tastes and feels good, and growing up, he’s always had a large appetite (fast metabolism). henry doesn’t like anything greasy or deep fried because it’ll make his stomach acid flare up. I had to look up what apple charlottes is, and yeah, I can tell you that henry would love it.
gordon j. gresley: gordon has a sweet tooth but he’s self conscious about it and has an image to uphold so he’ll tell anyone who’s making him coffee to make it black (he adds a packet of cream and sugar when nobody’s seeing) without anything added (his friends see right through him). his favorite dessert is orange float with a big scoop of vanilla ice cream on top. gordon also likes food that is usually eaten together with friends or family (something something lazy susan) like pork roast or kway teow or thick beef stew with mashed potatoes. big portions are necessary!
james a. hughes: sweet margarita is james’ favorite drink to have during outings with his friends. he also loves a good french onion soup, especially paired with croutons (do not make them too hard or he’ll riot!!). speaking of croutons, james loves fondue and he always fights over it with thomas. really, any food that looks good and makes him look well-off would be on his favorites list (please, james, why does most of these dishes involve alcohol in one way or another). he also likes sweet danish pastries.
percival “percy” avonside: he’s a simple man when it comes to food he likes. sandwiches are the way to go! carbohydrates, proteins, the tasty stuff — it’s all there! eggs benedict (he puts another english muffin on top so the sauce won't spill everywhere) is his most favorite since it makes him feel special and fancy. percy also loves good coffee, usually mixed with condensed milk or mocha, since he delivers the night mail train.
tobias “toby” holden: tiramisu is his favorite dessert and he prefers it made with more coffee content. he has helped out henrietta many times with making it to the point he’s has the process memorized. for savory dishes, he loves some good lasagna with extra beef content in the sauce. it’s gotta drench. really, toby loves his layered food huh
montague “duck” collett: he’s not picky when it comes to food given to him, so he just eats what any average joe would eat (eggs on toast for breakfast, sandwich for lunch, sausage with potatoes and peas for dinner). normal person food. duck makes sure he has his meal three times a day and follows the motto; “eat before you’re hungry, stop before you’re full.” also diesel made mango panna cotta once for him as a desperate token of apology and duck fell in love with it.
donald and douglas dunalastair: like thomas, they don’t really have much preference for filling meals. dessert, though? now that’s the stuff. donald loves cranachan so SO much he wishes he could eat it every day. douglas likes candies more instead of softer, silkier desserts, like black licorice or peppermint candy. they also eat only twice a day since they get full super quickly. amazing how so much strength for shoveling snow is stored behind their lanky bodies. they also drink irn bru
oliver t. swindon: oliver loves shepherd's pie because it’s practical. everything he needs is right there, fitting for someone who doesn’t like complicated things. as for the sweet stuff… even after forgetting some of his memories after his rescue, oliver remembers the feeling and taste of halo-halo on his tongue clearly, something he missed dearly.
giovanni vin diesel: diesel loves bruschetta. he puts some pepper flakes on top for that spice kick. he also loves sfincione, specifically the way his family would make it, but, like edward, nobody on sodor knows how to cook a decent one (too much sauce, too thick of a bread, or too soggy) which makes him a bit sad. diesel’s kind of picky when it comes to the meals he can consider “favorite” because he believes he’s the most qualified in the culinary field on sodor due to his upbringing.
mavis hawthorne: a slice of blackforest cake always makes her heart sing. not too heavy on the whipped cream, though, because she doesn’t like her desserts too sweet. she also likes baumkuchen. whenever toby cooks lasagna, he’d make another portion to give to mavis, which quickly became her favorite and something she looks forward to during lunch breaks.
rebecca nassif: rebecca likes snacking a lot. she finds joy in eating! she grew up surrounded by meals. like diesel, because of her upbringing, she’s always been an enthusiast of not only food, but culinary arts as a whole. she loves cold desserts that usually remind her of her old neighborhood like this pistachio kulfi that she would made when she was younger. rebecca also missed having knafeh and mafruka since moving to sodor (it’s been like... a week.)
nia e. wanjala: whenever nia feels like treating herself to something good, she’d make her own version of the gatsby sandwich at her house. she’s especially keen on the french fries and enjoys extra hot sauce with it. it’d take two meal times for her to finish it all. lately, nia’s also been enjoying pastries like chocolate muffins and bombolone (chocolate fillings are her favorite).
lady: as part of her mission to understand humanity and their intrapersonal relationships, lady developed an affinity to eating. she’d eat anything as long as it’s acceptable by human standards even though she doesn’t have to. lady wants to understand that people eat not only to survive but as a way to show their love and culture. isn’t the greatest blessing to be bestowed upon living things the ability to consume to their heart’s content? does her lack of mortal needs indicate her lack of personal desire? anyways her favorite foods are fish and chips with sweet mayonnaise on the side and soft serve vanilla ice cream.
diesel 10: his go-to is black coffee mixed with red bull (added with some other weird concoction if he feels like it). some scrambled eggs with a dash of hot sauce for breakfast. some fried bacon if he has some self respect for the day. some dried sardines if he wants to feel miserable. some baklava with extra syrup and pistachio if he wants to treat himself because the sound of the crunch eases his stress

Covenhead Baked Good Favorites 🍰
I love to bake so here are my headcannons on what the covenheads favorite baked goods are. Tagging @dopp-likes-yanderes because we've discussed this before
Belos: Bread pudding or Scones are his favorite as they remind him of home but he will eat anything you bake with a small smile. He's secretly a large sweet tooth and adores your sweet treats. If he's in the kitchen while you're baking he is teasing you as you bake making it hard to finish.
Hunter: He enjoys whatever you make but loves Pies and Fresh Baked breads. Hunter isn't a fan of a lot of icing/sugar unless it's Cinnamon rolls or something slightly savory but he's grateful for anything you bake for him. He'll sit patiently on the counter top and kick his legs as you bake. He can be really quiet but other times he's excitedly telling you about his day or infodumping.
Lilith: As head of the Emperor's Coven she often brags about her self control and how sweets aren't a temptation. However she has a soft spot for anything chocolate. Red Devils Chocolate Cake is her favorite and she can be bribed with said cake. She likes to sit in the kitchen as you bake and read. Sometimes she reads out loud so you can both enjoy the story and other times you both just sit in silence after a long day.
Kikimora: She steals all the cookies like a gremlin. It doesn't matter how many cookies you bake if she's alone with them they'll disappear. She isn't a fan of anything super gooey but if no one's around she'll take a piece of whatever you baked for herself. She skitters out of the kitchen when she sees you coming.
Raine: They love all sweets but have a strong favoritism towards anything made with Apple Blood. Cinnamon rolls and muffins are their favorite but if you make apple cobbler they're happy for the entire week. They love to bake with you standing behind you as you stir ingredients. If you don't need their help they'll serenade you or play music so you know you're not alone in the kitchen.
EberWolf: Anything literally anything you bake will be eaten with a happy smile in a very messy way. (Do not let them near the Chocolate they'll get sick.) Eber really loves when you make biscuits and cookies though because of their texture, they like the crunch and bite. They don't tend to stay in the kitchen while you bake but if they do they demand the spoon when you're done mixing and eat a lot more than they help bake.
Vitimir: Potion cakes, particularly lemon or licorice ones are what he adores. He's actually quite picky but will eat anything you bake as he doesn't want to be rude. Lemon flavored things make him smile under his cowl, the strong citrus taste being his favorite. He could eat an entire tray of lemon bars in a day so keep your eye on him. Surprisingly he's an excellent baker if he decides to help in the kitchen. But what he really loves to do is hug you from behind and just sway as you go about doing your own thing.
Terra: As someone who's known for tea time lunches Tea Cakes and Tarts are her favorite. A bit old fashioned perhaps but she enjoys them as they make her nostalgic. Mint is one of her preferred flavors but she's more into the type of sweet than the actual taste. She likes to sip tea in the kitchen as you both chat about your days. The sweets take awhile so she thinks of this as precious alone time and just enjoys it.
Adrian: As someone with a slim figure he tries to act picky about his sweets consumption. He claims to only eat a small slice of Coffee Cake or Cheese Cake on a treat day. But if no one is looking everything will be devoured. It doesn't matter what it is, Adrain's always hungry and he adores sweets. No self control. He can't be in the kitchen while you're baking because he wants to try everything but if he is in the kitchen he's teasing you the entire time. Loves to dot your nose with sugar and kiss it off along with other similar pranks.
Hettie: As a doctor Hettie knows how dangerous too many sweets can be. That being said Carrot Cake and Banana/Pumpkin bread are her favorites. While she tries to lean towards more healthy options that's not always the case. She is a hefty woman and doesn't plan on slimming down so if she takes a giant portion size don't judge her, your baking is amazing. She doesn't typically help but she'll remind you to eat regular food and drink water before having any of your baked goods.
Osran: This man is old fashioned. Tarts and Turnovers being on the top of his list. Any flavor works but he loves anything blueberry flavored. He's not a baker but he loves being in your company so that doesn't matter much. He'll sit and listen to you hum as you stir or do other things in the kitchen.
Darius: The covenhead is a man with fancy and refined tastes. Cheese cake bites, macaroons, and cake rolls are among his favorites. Cold desserts with hot drizzling sauces are what he prefers as he likes the cold and warm sensation at the same time. Outside of his fancy desserts he does like the occasional slice of warm pie with an ice cream scoop. He will put on an apron and help you bake if you ask. He's an excellent baking assistant and enjoys sneaking kisses between doing jobs in the kitchen.
Mason: This man loves anything that is chocolate or fudge flavored. Fudge Caramel Brownies, Monster cookies, Chocolate Peanut Butter bars, and chocolate chip cookies are some of his many favorites. If you bake him doughnuts I promise they will not stay around long. He's laughing and telling you stories to keep you entertained in the kitchen as you bake. He himself can't bake but he doesn't want you to be lonely so he stays with you keeping you company.

(since you reblogged the bother me with asks things, i’m sending you an ask instead of texting)
i feel like biscuits shouldn’t be allowed to have stuff in them
(there’s context for this but i think it’s funnier without)
The following assumes you are talking about the American biscuit and not the British biscuit. I have opinions on both, but the latter is for a different time / ask.
Broadly speaking, I agree. There is something so fundamentally good about a buttermilk biscuit or any other well made plain biscuit that further additions take away from it. Also the plain biscuit is so versatile! Want a savory snack -- eat with savory things. What a sweet snack -- eat with honey. Additions are limitations in this case.
That said, I think I would still consider a biscuit that had a reasonable amount of cheese, herbs, or other small what not (e.g. bacon) a biscuit. These seem very reasonable in the less structured drop biscuit (which, honestly, is biscuit in mostly just name -- delicious never the less).
I think the tipping point is when one passes from flaky and airy goodness to something more like a scone or short cake (which is what drop biscuits are closer to in my opinion). Too much of any inclusion makes that biscuit structure harder to achieve and you end up with a still delicious crumbly snack. Either it will be too dense or unlayered and just fall apart (I have had blue berry "biscuits" like this and they were amazing...but definitely closer to short cakes I have made. I should make blue berry short cakes...with compote...in the summer...)
This line of thought did make me wonder where the classic biscuit came from, and this was a very interesting read from KA flour. From this, it makes sense that early on inclusions in biscuits were either not worth the effort, increased the chance of spoilage, or was a waste of ingredients. Even after the development of leavening agents, I wonder if the pre-established notion of a biscuit was too solidified and versatile.
Another area I didn't have time to explore was what meal were biscuits longest associated with? My guess is savory with dinner. The rise of the sweet "biscuit" would be something to examine. Maybe whenever fresh fruit was more accessible.
The Red Lobster Cheddar Biscuits came in 1992 and probably falls into the category of drop biscuits -- so not really biscuits, but close.
This is long and rambling, but the result of a 20 min exploration during lunch....
(I am super curious to know what led to this question....)

Fueling those café au’s in my head... Part 2!
This time let’s look at what baked goods they would enjoy. 🫶🏼 (based on what I offer in shop & some new ideas!)
Part One: Drinkies!
Hitoshi S.
Will buy the cute seasonal sugar cookies, especially the cat themed ones during the spring & fall. Otherwise a blueberry muffin will suffice. If he’s really hungry a baked cheese & plant “sausage” turnover.
Denki K.
Frosted muffins, loaves & scones. The frosted matcha & vanilla crème Swiss roll is a favorite of his. But the frosted strawberry scone is a good second choice. Will be the one to order a breakfast bagel when super hungry.
Katsuki B.
He enjoys spice over sweet that much is true. He’s not one to order baked goods often, but there’s a hatch chili bread released during the later fall season that he will buy a slice or two of. If not, a savory maple sausage pull-apart roll every once in a while never hurt.
Izuku M.
Flaky pastries!! Always always. Chocolate croissant? Yes. Spinach feta croissant? Also yes. Spiced ham & pepper Jack cheese blossom? … yes. Quiches with buttery crust. Biggest yes. It’s used in so many dishes and so yummy in his opinion.
Shoto T.
Plain/simple flaky pastry or biscuit. Usually something to go along with his tea. There’s an orange blossom and currant biscotti that he’s grown fond of thanks to midoriya’s suggestion. Will have some quiche if offered. Not the meat heavy ones though.
Eijirou K.
Sweet boy loves some sweet loaf slices. He will indulge in pumpkin spice during the season. Otherwise the spiced loaf or apple crumble loaf are great choices. Will get the warm breakfast sandwiches on fresh bread.
Hanta S.
Contrast to his drinks and similar to bakugo, Sero likes the more savory pastries. The rosemary & tomato tart is the perfect snack. While the chili, egg & spinach blossom is a good breakfast option in his eyes.
Tenya I.
Cinnamon roll, no raisins but yes to cream cheese icing. Only once in a blue moon though. He allows himself to enjoy this with his classmates. Otherwise a buttery croissant will do, there’s no need for the excess sugar all the time.
Dabi
Again this mf doesn’t go to coffee shops… Will take warm bread, he likes the softness of it when it’s freshly baked. The topped toast options are usually what he goes for. The special spices Ogura jam with everything bagel seasoning is a go to.
Hawks
Learned to like the Ogura jam pastries because of Dabi. Will get the baked Ogura & sea salt stuffed rolls. There’s also a seaweed flakes croissant he enjoys with a sweet plum jam.
Mirio T.
Loves to try just the most American sounding baked goods. Apple strudel with cinnamon, strawberry & rhuebarb blossoms, Canadian bacon and cheddar boomerang? All yeses! Tamaki has told him countless times that two of those things are decidedly not American but Mirio is too busy ordering to hear him.
Tamaki A.
Is less shy when it comes to ordering pastries from his favorite bakery. Enjoys trying the new seasonal items. The sweet Sakura dango was a big hit with him. Will also get the milk bread toasted with a semi-runny egg & chives on top.
Shota A.
A bagel. He enjoys trying to different toppings but prefers having something easy to eat between classes and napping. Open to trying different kinds of bagels as well. Hizashi once bought him a breakfast bar and he enjoyed it. Still gets bagels though.
Hizashi Y.
Much like Tamaki, Hizashi likes trying the seasonal pastries. It only makes sense if he’s trying the seasonal drinks too! It’s the full experience. The toasted coconut & pineapple loaf was a surprising new favorite. So was the miso & cucumber tea sandwich.
*based on my view of them & their personalities*
Might do this for JJK or another fandom next. This has also given me new ideas for some trial goods in the bakery next week…

List 5 things that make you happy, then put this in the askbox for the last 10 people who reblogged something from you! Get to know your mutuals and followers♡
tysm for the ask!! I've been kind of bummed out lately so this is an important reminder that I should try to verbalize more of the good stuff that's going on re: being a human person, lol.
one: tea and sweets. I drink a lot of tea but I really love sitting down with a mug or cup with pot and a slice of cake or a scone or whatever. it feels like a special little treat even if it's just a couple digestive biscuits. I also like afternoon tea with savories too but I'm usually too lazy to make a whole spread myself.
two: casual cosplay. also regular cosplay, but I like finding excuses to get dressed up in more subtle ways because it's easier to pull off on the regular lol. I love wearing outfits that have references to stuff or are like functional pieces that look very obviously like a particular character's outfit or aesthetic. it does create closet space problems bc now I have things like a fuzzy princess mononoke vest from her universe that I rarely have reason to wear, but it makes me happy when I do wear it.
three: finally finding a thing you've been looking for for years on ebay/mercari/a thrift store/wherever. I have a lot of active collections and there is something so satisfying about finally!!!!! getting a piece you've been wanting forever but it's hard to find or usually quite expensive. I also love love love doing this for other people, like my brother broke his favorite mug - a long out of production dark blue disney mug with goofy on it - and being able to go online, keep an eye out for it and finally track it down was fantastic. one of my best friends collects nancy drew books and ephemera and I always send her pics of ones I find just in case its an edition she wants or something she's missing.
four: the fact that @heystovepipeboys has her 10 year green card!!!!! this is sort of silly bc she got it last year but the process was sooooo delayed because of covid and the department being understaffed and underfunded, so we were waiting and waiting and waiting and she had to take her passport everywhere and sometimes people wouldn't understand the documents she had proving she's a permanent resident. it still doesn't feel real that we're finally done with that whole process. if anyone ever has questions about the fiance visa process I am happy to give the rundown lol, 90 day fiance is not an accurate view of how simple the process is.
five: cats, I love cats. have never met a cat I don't like. they're all so funny and have such distinct personalities and weird rich inner lives despite their walnut sized brains. we have two cats and they're both weird little beasts and I love them. C:

Can I ask if you have a good recipe for cheese scones on hand? I have only made sweet ones before and would like to try cheese scones
typically i just take the basic scone recipe and add about 1.25 cups of grated cheddar cheese. straight out of the fridge and freshly grated is best for it and you fold that cheese in and then sprinkle some more on top before putting it in the oven.
Actually thinking about it mine might be more of a cheesy tea-biscuit situation it's sort of on the cusp lol
i think im gonna try these ones they look good as hell. i think swiss wouldbe nice too

Hi it is roadtrip hc anon! i hope the hcs have indeed been a balm, or that you’re feeling better ✨
if not, i wanted to share another hc i had about how the buff ladies would bake, bc who doesn’t love bread and also bc i have too much baking knowledge in my head. I included Soma bc she’s a cutie:
Eivor appreciates the indulgence and honest simplicity of quick breads. Think buttermilk pancakes, banana breads, flaky biscuits, scones. For Eivor the allure is in the tenderness of the crumb and the versatility of the recipes, each pillowy bite a love letter to the art of home baking. She could try her hand at whipping up something fancy for you, but she chooses to prioritize bringing these sweet morsels over to you as soon as she can, so she can feed them to you in between soft kisses.
Blessed with the stamina of the gods, Kassandra relishes the rough, repetitive slap-and-folds that give structure to gradually tightening sourdough. An early riser, she puts on coffee and proceeds to proof the dough, humming as she dusts the top of the delicate mounds ready to be scored and baked bien cuit. When she craves novelty – which is often – she’ll alternate her slow fermentation work with the finest sablée and lavish confections designed to make you moan into the very first bite.
Only Soma has both the patience and the mastery for the most intricate of viennoisserie. Intense, silent focus writ large on her handsome face, she measures out each sheet of butter-laden pastry, bent almost flat on her expansive wooden workspace, one eye shut for precision. To her the reward of such exacting work is in the mere anticipation of watching your eyes close with unadulterated pleasure as your teeth shatter the immaculate flaky folds of her pain au chocolat.
Dani Rojas is not a baker by nature, but she will never pass up the opportunity to get her hands dirty with you. Typically accustomed to tasting the salt of the sweat streaming down her face, she finds the toothsome satisfaction of savory pastries a welcome change. Dani revels in the tactile process of using her fingertips to blend fat into a pie dough, or dolloping the filling onto a pastelito – more so if she gets a chance to add her warm tattooed hands to yours inside the mixing bowl, stealing a steamy kiss as you both laugh and make a powdery mess of the place. When left to her own devices, she loves to surprise you with gently sloping jam-filled layer cakes almost as sweet as Dani herself.
Uhm my dearly beloved anon, this actually might be the most beautiful set of headcanons I've ever read? Your mind is nothing short of masterful I swear down 🥺
Tumblr media
Please accept all the love and thank you for this absolute treat!! Every part of my being wants to dub thee "Picasso Anon" because you are a pure creative genius
(I am now very, very hungry)

Callisto Tea House, 1359 N Altadena Dr, Pasadena, CA 91107
Tumblr media
How nice to have a new tea house in the neighborhood and no, they do not serve milk tea. Callisto is a place to get enjoy a pot of high quality tea or if you’d like, they have gong fu service (a Chinese) tea ceremony and cold brew. They also have treats that pair well with tea, including sweet and savory scones, toast (they make their own sourdough bread), cookies, cakes, and assorted tea treats. You can also sign up for tea tastings.
You can choose your tea cup from the ones on the shelves. They also sell bagged teas, tea cups, and tea accessories.
Asian tea treats ($5): digestive biscuit, peanut brittle, almond brittle, hawthorne berry, dried pomelo peel, two milk cookies. Very nice – tiny bites for the most part but very flavorful. The flavors change your tea drinking experience. I liked everything – the crisp thin cookies, the sharp pomelo peel, the crunchy brittle pieces.
Pot of November Rain tea (black tea + cardamom), $6: Liked it – subtle cardamom flavor
The shop has a relaxing look and feel. The owners are very kind too. Even the music is soothing. There’s a parking lot in the back, free wi-fi, books to browse and some games too. The bathroom is nice.
5 out of 5 stars.

Tumblr media
Bacon is a beloved ingredient that has been a staple of breakfast tables and kitchens for generations. Whether you like it crispy or chewy, sweet or savory, bacon has a way of adding flavor and depth to any dish it touches. But there's more to bacon than just frying it up in a pan. From classic breakfast dishes to creative twists on old favorites, there are endless ways to enjoy this versatile ingredient. In this article, we'll explore the many uses of bacon in the kitchen, share some tips and tricks for cooking it to perfection, and provide you with some delicious recipes to try at home. More Delicious Recipes You Will Love: - Ham: A Popular and Versatile Meat for Any Occasion - Jeyuk Bokkeum: How to Make a Spicy Korean Pork Belly Stir-Fry - Tonkatsu: The Beloved Japanese Fried Pork Cutlets Here's a simple recipe for bacon-wrapped chicken: Tips: - Choose high-quality bacon: Look for bacon that is made from high-quality pork and is free from added nitrates, nitrites, or other preservatives. - Cook bacon on low to medium heat: Bacon should be cooked slowly over low to medium heat to ensure that it cooks evenly and doesn't burn. - Save the bacon grease: Don't throw away the bacon grease! It can be used to add flavor to other dishes, such as roasted vegetables or soups. - Use bacon as a flavoring agent: Bacon is a great way to add flavor to other dishes, such as salads, soups, and pasta dishes. - Try different cuts of bacon: There are many different types of bacon available, including thick-cut, applewood-smoked, and peppered. Experiment with different cuts to find your favorite. - Consider alternative cooking methods: While pan-frying is the most common way to cook bacon, it can also be cooked in the oven or on a griddle for a different texture and flavor. What are some dishes that bacon grease would work well in? Bacon grease is a flavorful and versatile ingredient that can be used in many dishes. Here are some examples of dishes that bacon grease would work well in: - Roasted vegetables: Tossing vegetables with a small amount of bacon grease before roasting can add a delicious smoky flavor to the dish. - Soups and stews: Adding a spoonful of bacon grease to soups and stews can help to deepen the flavor and add richness to the broth. - Grilled sandwiches: Using bacon grease instead of butter or oil to grill sandwiches can add extra flavor and crispiness to the bread. - Fried rice: Sautéing cooked rice with bacon grease can add a smoky flavor to the dish and help to prevent the rice from sticking to the pan. - Cornbread: Using bacon grease instead of oil or butter to grease the pan when making cornbread can add a delicious savory flavor to the bread. - Grilled or roasted meats: Brushing grilled or roasted meats with a mixture of bacon grease and herbs can add extra flavor and help to keep the meat moist. These are just a few examples, but there are many other dishes that bacon grease can be used in. Just be aware that bacon grease is high in fat and should be used in moderation as part of a balanced diet. Can bacon grease be used in baking recipes? Bacon grease can be used in some baking recipes, but it may not work well in all recipes. It's important to keep in mind that bacon grease has a strong, savory flavor, so it may not be suitable for all baked goods. Here are some examples of baked goods that bacon grease could be used in: - Biscuits: Bacon grease can be used instead of butter or shortening to make flaky, savory biscuits. - Cornbread: Bacon grease can add a delicious savory flavor to cornbread. - Savory pies and quiches: Bacon grease can be used to flavor the crust of savory pies and quiches, as well as the filling. - Savory scones: Bacon grease can be used instead of butter or cream to make savory scones. - Savory muffins: Bacon grease can be used to add a savory flavor to muffins. However, it's important to note that in some baking recipes, such as cakes and cookies, using bacon grease may alter the texture and flavor of the final product in undesirable ways. It's best to experiment with small amounts of bacon grease in baking recipes to see how it affects the final product before using it in larger quantities. Can bacon grease be used in place of oil in baking recipes? Bacon grease can be used in place of oil in baking recipes, but it's important to keep in mind that it has a strong, savory flavor that may not be desirable in all baked goods. When using bacon grease as a substitute for oil, it's best to start with a small amount and adjust the recipe as needed based on the flavor and texture of the final product. Here are some general guidelines to keep in mind when using bacon grease in place of oil: - Use a 1:1 substitution ratio: In most cases, you can substitute bacon grease for oil in a 1:1 ratio. For example, if a recipe calls for 1/4 cup of oil, you can use 1/4 cup of melted bacon grease instead. - Adjust the seasoning: Bacon grease has a salty, smoky flavor, so you may need to adjust the seasoning in the recipe to account for the extra saltiness. You may also want to reduce or omit any other savory ingredients in the recipe to avoid overwhelming the other flavors. - Consider the texture: Bacon grease is solid at room temperature, so it may affect the texture of the final product. You may want to melt the bacon grease and let it cool slightly before using it in the recipe to ensure that it mixes evenly with the other ingredients. Overall, using bacon grease as a substitute for oil can add a delicious savory flavor to baked goods, but it's important to use it in moderation and adjust the recipe asneeded to ensure that the final product has the desired flavor and texture. How can I tell if the bacon grease I have is still good to use? Bacon grease can last for a long time if stored properly, but it's important to make sure that it hasn't gone rancid before using it. Here are some tips for determining whether your bacon grease is still good to use: - Check the color and texture: Bacon grease should be a light golden color when it's fresh. If it has turned brown or darkened significantly, it may have gone rancid. The texture should be smooth and creamy, without any lumps or chunks. - Smell it: Rancid bacon grease will have a strong, unpleasant odor. If it smells off or sour, it's best to discard it. - Taste a small amount: If you're unsure whether your bacon grease is still good, you can taste a small amount. Fresh bacon grease should have a mild, smoky flavor. If it tastes bitter or sour, it's best to discard it. - Check the storage conditions: Bacon grease should be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator or freezer to prevent it from going rancid. If it has been stored improperly or for an extended period of time, it may have gone bad. If you're unsure whether your bacon grease is still good to use, it's best to err on the side of caution and discard it. Using rancid bacon grease can result in unpleasant flavors and may also be harmful to your health. Conclusion: Bacon is a beloved ingredient in American cuisine that is known for its smoky, savory flavor and crispy texture. It is commonly used in breakfast dishes such as bacon and eggs, but can also be used to add flavor and depth to a wide variety of dishes, including soups, salads, and pasta dishes. Bacon grease, the rendered fat that is left over after cooking bacon, is also a versatile ingredient that can be used to add flavor to other dishes. While bacon is high in fat and salt, it can be enjoyed in moderation as part of a balanced diet. Whether you prefer your bacon crispy or chewy, there's no denying that it has a special place in the hearts and stomachs of many people around the world. Briton Sarah Merker finishes mission to eat scones at 244 National Trust sites
Comment on this story Comment LONDON — Few things are more quintessentially British than afternoon tea. Center stage of the delicious treat is usually a pile of warm, fluffy scones — round, doughy, baked desserts — topped with thick dollops of clotted cream and smothered in sweet strawberry jam. Not, dear reader, to be confused with American biscuits that are often savory, flaky rather than…

Note
as someone who is unfortunately unovan, the distinction here is typically:
biscuit: flat-topped usually salty/savory bread thing
cookie: anything that is flat, either hard or crumbly, and sweet that is not some variety of cracker
i respect both ways of saying it but scones are (to me) something that's sort of in between a cookie and a bread (it is not flat but it's not particularly bready, and it's usually a triangle and has a sweet frosting on it) and i do Not understand how y'all look at a unovan biscuit and think "hmm... scone..."
also i feel bad for anyone who hasn't tried biscuits and gravy
Biscuit = Scone
Cookies = Biscuits
Scones = Scones with jam(?)
Also what is that and why does it look like that
