64 Bourbons Bracket Round of 64: Matchup 15: Baker’s 7 Years Single Barrel vs. Old Grandad Bonded Bourbon

This was an odd matchup. Some strange shit happening on the nose (do I pine for Thanksgiving?) and palate (what’s with the meat?). Baker’s 7 year single barrel was absolutely limping out of the fucking gate, taste wise. But Old Grandad BIB was shooting itself in the foot, especially with no finish yet it was covering my mouth with that chalkiness that I steer away from. I gotta say, I don’t know what to think of this Baker’s 7 Years Single Barrel with all the meaty, and buttery rolls and straight up odd nose. But there was a consistent funky cinnamon that kept cropping up for the Baker’s. Kinda like blending Willett rye with Old Tub. This Baker’s isn’t an officially low proof, but it may be too bashful to advance very far. It’s nose was strange and complex, but its taste was too muted tonight for me to anticipate that it will advance terribly far. I had chicken fried rice for supper. Maybe that wrecked my palate. I am worn out from straight fistfighting with ice and sledding for hours. Usually during these bourbon matchups, I gravitate towards mellower and trancelike (or ambient) songs so as not to distract away from the tasting and analysis. Tonight I dialed up a fucking heavy ass song (although trance-like) and kept cranking up my son’s wireless headphones louder and louder and louder. Until the riffs crushed. Tonight, the bourbons needed the jams. So, my ears may be ringing and both of these bourbons may be better than my palate gives them credit for, or they may be pedestrian and the song still crushes.

Baker’s 7 Years Single Barrel advances to the round of 32, but it had better get over its shyness if it doesn’t want to get bounced. And the meatiness? What the fuck? Although I tasted meatiness when I drank Pappy Van Winkle (how many years? Shit, I can’t remember. It was my father-in-law’s bottle and we were drinking to some sort of UK football milestone). So, cheers to Baker’s. I may have a victory mini pour to see if it performs differently after I have a buzz and ringing ears.

Apple. Cedar. Pine. A dash of firepit. A dash of peat.

Actually, more than a dash - the smoke is prominent. A pinch of brown sugar.

Buffalo Trace Louisville Barrel Pick:

Apple. That’s about it. Even empty glass: apple is about it.

Taste:

John J. Bowman Single Barrel:

Wood. Lots of oak. Some vanilla. Slight apple. Baking spice. A hint of eggnog. Firepit smoke. Peat. Wait, this is like a bourbon finished in an ancient scotch barrel. Extended Kentucky chew: sassafras, flowers, honey, orange tea.

Buffalo Trace Louisville Barrel Pick:

Oak and tannins. Funky. Banana pudding. Brown sugar. Extended Kentucky chew: oak.

Feel and Finish:

John J. Bowman Single Barrel:

Oily feel. Fairly long. Tannic and drying finish. Oak shines through. Subtle Kentucky hug. Hangs on gums. Kentucky hug goes down to breastbone. Kentucky hug has an echo and keeps returning. A bit of char. Extended Kentucky chew brought some very unexpected finishing notes. Tea bag tannins (no scrotums involved), orange tea tannins no less. And floral - no oak. No chalkiness, pastiness, or bitterness.

Buffalo Trace Louisville Barrel Pick:

Medium and Oily feel. Shorter finish and Kentucky hug than John J Bowman. Makes mouth feel pasty after finish. Tickles gums a bit. Oak taste on finish. Much milder than John J Bowman single barrel. Short finish after extended Kentucky chew brings yeasty taste and yeasty pasty coating of mouth. A bit crawspaceish — bitter and IPAish on back of tongue.
