Did you know that dart frogs are nontoxic when kept in captivity?
The poison that they’re well known for is derived entirely from their diet in the wild; consisting of ants, mites and termites which feed on toxic plants.

These are my bois Titian (yellow) and Raphael (orange-y). They’re Dendrobates Leucomelas or Bumblebee Dart frogs. They’re both under a year old and are honestly way more amazing than I ever expected animals I can’t touch/handle to be.

Here is Bumblebee! He is a zealot barbarian grung based off a poison dart frog and he’s an absolute gremlin haha. He’s the leader of a tribe of grung who were taken in by an airship of adventurers after saving them from something bad, and because they came from the sky they revere their rescuers as gods 😂 they aren’t very bright. The greatest thing he’s ever faced was a large and terrifying baboon which he killed protecting his tribe, and wears the skull now to scare off baddies since this is the baddest thing he’s ever faced. Who knows where he got the human skull he turned into a mace 😬

These frogs occur in several different color patterns. Unlike many other poison dart frogs, this species is semi-arboreal and will often climb above the enclosure floor. They aren’t as toxic as some other dart frogs, but they are dangerous enough to cause human deaths. The green and black dart frogs available in the pet trade are often wild-caught individuals, so care is required when moving or transporting them. They were also introduced to Hawaii in the 1930s to help reduce local mosquito populations. This species has a relatively expansive range relative to many other poison dart frogs, which encompasses a region stretching from Nicaragua and Costa Rica to northern Columbia. And although many advanced keepers eventually move on to other species, this species is typically considered the best one for beginners to choose. The green and black poison dart frog is likely the most commonly kept species in captivity. Green and Black Poison Dart Frog ( Dendrobates auratus) Try to pick the ones that are best suited for your situation and that you find appealing. One of the most appealing aspects of poison dart frogs for amphibian enthusiasts is the diverse array of species that are available.īelow, we’ll provide you with some of the basic information about seven of the most commonly seen species. Instead, the vast majority of poison dart frogs in captivity are members of a handful of genera, including Dendrobates, Phyllobates, Ranitomeya and Epipedobates. However, frogs from most of these genera are not available in the pet trade – at least, not in significant numbers. The currently recognized poison dart frog genera are as follows: Poison dart frogs are all thought to be descendants of a single, ancestral species, but some of the extant species are more closely related to each other than some others are.Īccordingly, scientists place the various species in one of 16 different groups called genera (singular: genus). But these 200-odd species aren’t all equally closely related. Nevertheless, these species are all part of a single group, called the family Dendrobatidae. It’s difficult to identify the exact number of described species, as authorities often differ on some of the minor points of poison dart frog taxonomy. Scientists currently recognize approximately 200 species of poison dart frog. Always Opt for Captive-Bred Specimens When Possible.Reticulated Poison Dart Frog (Ranitomeya ventrimiculata) Bicolor Poison Dart Frog (Phyllobates bicolor) Golden Poison Dart Frog (Phyllobates terribilis) Anthony’s Poison Dart Frog (Epipedobates anthonyi) Yellow-Striped Poison Dart Frog (Dendrobates truncates) Dyeing Poison Dart Frog (Dendrobates tinctorius) Bumblebee Poison Dart Frog (Dendrobates leucomelas) Green and Black Poison Dart Frog (Dendrobates auratus)

hi guys i just dusted my bookshelf now i think we should talk about my favorite books
Tumblr media
heres a really bad picture ummm we should get the non books out of the way thats spider man (IN MY FAV SUIT I LOVE THE IRONSPIDER SUTI SO MUCH) and u cant see it but hes holding the iron gauntlet and hes sooo cool and epic and hes from my favorite non spiderman marvel movie (infinity war!!! its my fav bc it has spider man and dr strange and iron man all interacting and they are my favorites!!) and then theres a jar of frogs. ummm in there theres a few random frogs but most of them are my collection of poison dart frog figurines and also TWO frog bouncy balls one (the one u can see its got this kinda weird purple bottom) has a bumblebee frog in it (not a real one obv) also u cant really see but the jar is organized vaguely by color. also it used to be painted (thats the blue on the top and the random white spots) but i took most of the paint off (and then got lazy and didnt take off the rest of the paint) and yes its ontop of three pairs of gloves (two pairs of winter gloves and gardening gloves) that i wear sometimes when i dont want to touchanything. also i forgot to mention that spider man is number 77 which is great bc 7 is my favorite ever number which brings us into the books <3 counting by sevens (second on the top shelf, red spine) was my favorite book in like second grade . which totally has nothing to do w my obsession for the number seven hahahahahahahahahah <- lying. okay first on the top shelf i havent actually read that book it actually is probably pretty okay but i havent read anything for a long time lmao it was gifted to me by a friend tho thats why its on my Special shelf. then its counting by sevens (thats the one w the autistic girl who i was obsessed w for years. like i read the book at age like 7 and then JUST bought it last year so i could finally have it forever) and then the secret life of bees which was another gift from a friend i dont remember if i ever finished (we have the problem that i was reading it when smth traumatic happened so i dont remember shit abt it) AND THEN!! the laura ingalls wilder series which i was obsessed with in like..... third grade???? anyways i really wish i had the first few books (those are my favs!! tho i like town on the prairie too) but i didnt actually buy them my uncle gave them too me (he works in a publishing company) and he didnt even know that i liked them. then is howls moving castle which im pretty sure ive read but it was like when i was 8 so again i dont remember the book (i watched the movie recently w a friend tho it was great) then is a dictionary which i annotated (we added. our fav characters at the time to it. yeah.) and also i carried it around w me for like a month. then is anne of green gables which i also really like at some point when i was younger (yes i have seen the netflix series yes i did like it for the most part) ONTO THE SECOND SHELF !!! tuesdays at the castle was a book my friend and i read together in third grade and it was what finally got her into reading. then is the first four years which is also another laura ingalls wilder! and then its the school for good and evil (i enjoyed the first book but it got SO BAD LATER that is not the first book that i have it was one of the bad ones but again i got it from my uncle who works in The Book Industry) AND THEN!! the carry on/fangirl series!! which i was obsessed w like two years ago. then theres my book of fairy tales !!!!!!!!!! which is pretty old i think. i have older books tho i have a 1977 a 1972 and a 1959 anddd the fairy tales are only from 1997. so none of my books are SUPER old but theyre old enough u have to be careful. anyways NOT PICTURED BUT STILL IMPORTANT TO ME (they were too tall for these shelves): the chronicles of narnia, a complete collection of edgar allan poes short stories and poems (WOOOOOOO POE!!), the little house cook book (another laura ingalls wilder thing!!), the princess tales (love them when we were like five!!) sea view secret ( mystery i remember none of but our dad read it to us when we were little) THATS IT tumblr is cutting me off word count wise

today’s funky frog of the day is: dendrobates leucomelas! commonly known as the yellow-banded poison dart frog, yellow-headed poison dart frog, or bumblebee poison frog, they are endemic to the continent of south america, most notably in venezuela. they are normally found in very humid conditions in tropical rain forests, specifically on flat rocks, trees, plants, and the leaf litter of the forest floor. they’re one of the largest frogs in their genus, growing up to five inches, and the females tend to be slightly larger than the males. like with most poison dart frogs, their bright color serves as a warning of their toxicity to predators, and they can live anywhere from five to seven years.

You know what, I’m just gonna come out and say it: Mourning geckos are the coolest little ladies in the world. Oh, why are they the coolest and why did I generalize them all as ladies? Because they are all ladies. Every last one of them. Mourning geckos are a species of all-female geckos, which is actually how they got their common name. It was rumored that the cry from these gals was a sign that they were mourning the males of their species, which, of course, they weren’t.
But wait, you may ask, if they are all females, how do they reproduce? Cloning, babey! Mourning geckos engage in parthenogenesis, meaning that their eggs don’t need to be fertilized in order to produce embryos. It’s all asexual reproduction, but they do like to fool around with their gal pals to stimulate that reproduction. Mourning geckos are the coolest little Amazonian warriors and I adore my two girls—and their future girls—to absolute pieces
