"You love him, don’t you?" Rosh asks. "It’s not just a crush?"

Simon ducks his head and fumbles with the glass in his hand.

He does love Wille is the thing.

Wille, with his adorable smiles and his awkward flirting and his beautiful amber eyes, always ready to meet Simon’s own.

Wille, who looks at Simon as if he’s the whole world and the only one who matters.

Wille, who knows how to get his way and handle those in power, but who is utterly lost when it comes to the most mundane things.

Wille, who grew up spoiled and sheltered and with so much privilege it’s not even funny anymore, but who still cares so very much.

Wille, who is not just the establishment, is not just the wealthy elite profiting off the poor masses, but the actual monarchy, which is so much worse, because the wealthy elite look up to him, worship and envy both him and the ancient institution he stands for, wanting to be like him, and if they can't be that, then they at least want to be as close to him as they possibly can, hoping that some of the centuries-old splendor and power and influence will rub off on them.

Wille, who is the future King, unknowingly tempting Simon to betray everything he believes in just by being his own charming self.

Simon loves Wille, even if he’s also His Royal Highness The Crown Prince of Sweden, Duke of Östergötland, and Simon is supposed to hate him and everything he stands for.

"Yeah," he says, blushing, a shy smile flittering across his face. "I really do."

Ayub grins.

"No need to be embarrassed," he says, grabbing another slice of pizza. "It’s not like you’re the only one. My gran absolutely adores him. Has ever since he was born on the same day she got her citizenship. She has like, commemorative plates and pictures and everything."

Rosh laughs.

Simon buries his face in his hands.

I just. I just… i have discovered something. And I have laughed too much. I have laughed every time I have tried to explain it to someone. I cannot get through this.

There are two things you need to know, here.

First: There’s a style of Greek pottery that was popular during the Hellenic period, for which most of the surviving examples are from southern Italy. We call them ‘fish plates’ because, well, they’re plates, and they’re decorated with fish (and other marine life).

They’re very cool. We’re not 100% sure what they were for, because most of the surviving ones were found as grave goods, but that’s a different post.

The second thing you need to know is that when we (Classics/archaeology/whatever as a discipline) have a collection of artefacts, like vases, sculptures, paintings, etc. and we do not know the name of the artist, but we’re pretty sure one artist made X, Y and Z artefacts, we come up with a name for that artist. There are a whole bunch of things that could be the source for the name, e.g. where we found most of their work (The Dipylon Master) or the potter with whom they worked (the Amasis Painter), a favourite theme (The Athena Painter), the Museum that ended up with the most famous thing they did (The Berlin Painter) or a notable aspect of their style. Like, say, The Eyebrow Painter.

Sometimes you just have one of those moments where the progress we've made as a culture get thrown into stark relief. You look at something and go "Holy shit, that would never have happened when I was a kid."

Today, I had one of those moments when I realized that the teenage boys I'm working with are just. genuinely, openly enthusiastic about going to Build-a-Bear for their outing.

These are sixteen and seventeen year old boys! They just had a whole conversation about what to name their "cute", mostly new squishmallows! They're genuinely excited that they're going to Build-a-Bear this weekend and asking other kids to pick up specific accessories for them!!

Holy shit, that never would've happened when I was 16. None of the boys would have dared to be visibly interested - and neither would most of the girls! There would have been a million gay jokes and "Haha, you're a girl" jokes and "What are you, a baby?" jokes. Teenagers weren't even supposed to care about anything back then!

Less than 15 years later, and I'm watching three 17 year old boys treat all that as not even worthy of comment.

So let's call that a reason for hope. Even when the kids aren't alright, in some ways apparently they are alright. Go Gen Z, honestly. It's so lovely to watch you guys just openly doing and saying stuff that, when I was a teen, would've been a social death sentence.

There could be a billion trans people in the world and it still wouldn't be a bad thing because being trans is not a bad thing. Even if the rate of people discovering they are trans is "disproportionate" to trends from decades ago, that is not a bad thing. In fact, it's a natural consequence for there being more trans people being able to stay alive, and, overall, being able to live in a slightly more tolerant world.
