#but new vegas cares more about the fallout of Fallout 2 + new ideas than some pre-war America. The most we get is like Poseidon energy and

A devastating and confusing thing about the Fallout setting, when you explore the pre-war aspects, is what the creators think about pre-war America. In the first games we only get hints of the pre-war world, but they seem to be some sort of wild fascist nation invading Canada. In Fallout 1, the first thing we're introduced to of the pre-war society is seeing a soldier shoot civilians and laughing.
Now, for the first 2 games and New Vegas we don't really know much. What we know is that there's a fascist military group known as the enclave who were a sort of US deep state even before the war, and that the government teamed up with corporate interests to preform vaguely MKULTRA-ish experiments with the Vaults. Basically, the government was an extreme version of the 50s American jingoism and McCarthyism.
This is well and dandy, I guess issues come up more when we get to the later games, especially 4, where it seems like none of this extreme plotting and societal civil unrest which would exist is seen. The society as presented in 4 also seems quite progressive, gay people are featured in the opening, and none of the baggage of say, civil rights not existing are included. Now on a baseline, I don't want settings to be more conservative, homophobic and sexist etc., but it becomes a very confusing setting when it's displayed both as this jingoist extreme thing with fascist tendencies aswell as a progressive place where everyone is seemingly equal. If you're focusing on the 50s as your setting, and American nationalism in the 50s, then you can't have McCarthyism spoofs and anti-communism as a societal paranoia norm while also general equality is the norm without misunderstanding why McCarthyism and nationalist jingoism is bad. A massive harm done in anti-communist paranoia is how it degrades and vilifies any progressive movements (women's rights, civil rights, homosexuality) as being morally un-American and therefore connected to communism. To ignore this just makes any critique of MacCarthyism and jingoism weird!
Basically, pre-war America in Fallout 4 becomes this both sides thing where America is both pure and equal and white fences in every instance that we see as the player (the intro), while also supposedly being this dystopic MacCarthyist hellscape that's broadcasting gladly about their war crimes in Canada, and wants to root out communism. I guess the only fix for this issue without getting into the fine print like they had to do is just not to focus too much on the pre-war world.

The First NCR Trooper
What do I mean by the first NCR Trooper? The one in Primm. The first NCR Trooper you're likely to meet. This one
Tumblr media
His dialogue tree is decently fleshed out, well, it's more one 'follow up questions' path and 2 'end the conversation' paths, but still, that's more than some named characters and its only a 1-time thing. So, rather than do the bold dialogue quotes thing, why not screenshot every line? I make bad descisions. Hahahaa.
This is gonna get a bit big because of that, so, uh, read more.
Tumblr media
Anyway, first options first "What's going on in Primm?"
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This line is notable to me because it's basically the only time the Vipers and Jackals are mentioned by a character in FNV. I had thought there were no actual references to 'em, but there is this (let's not get into Fallout's use of the word 'tribe').
Tumblr media
Anyway, 3 more options. Again, we'll go first first. And then loop back to the other options later, alright?
Tumblr media
A slightly useless extra first option rather than him just saying the next line after this line.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And that's the end of that tree. Now, we all have to accept the fact that in-story these Troopers can't just walk into the low-level poorly-armed Escaped Convicts and win instantly, in spite of our ability to clear out the Escaped Convicts with ease. If we am bein' generous the reason is that they don't want to lose any men due to their 'low manpower'.
When you say 'I can take care of myself.' he says this
Tumblr media
I appreciate how succinct that one is.
Next is the final one 'Thanks for the warning.'
Tumblr media Tumblr media
No idea why that needed to be 2 lines, except to mean I had to go through it twice.
Tumblr media
And that's that. This Trooper now only had Primm NCR and Generic NCR dialogue.
So, maybe you're thinkin' "Delafiseaseses, why did you bother spotlighting this Trooper? With screenshots, no less? Well, I know you can find the faces of characters like Easy Pete or Andy Scabb. But this bloke? Never. To find an image of him you'd need to look for a playthrough. But his face is always the same. Those weird New Vegas Pale Lips. He's unnamed, but he has that entire dialogue tree. That's 9 lines. And he's the first NCR Troop you probably ever met in-game. That's special.
The dialogue is also, while a bit gruff in places, a sign this man cares about life. He knows of a danger, he warns you, you don't take his advice, he dismisses you and can say 'at least I warned them' if you die. No blood on his hands there.
He says he'd love to help Primm, but the systems around him prevent that. That's probably how all the unnamed Troopers here feel (hence the 'we'). Hell, that's how most of the NCR is, innit? He's a good introduction to it all.
He's probably not incompetent, but he's not making the decisions. The NCR collectively, who collectively caused this convict situation to begin with, cannot fix it due to a mix of lines like 'it's not our jurisdiction' and 'supplies and manpower'. That's the NCR across the entire game.
And it was first shown here, perfectly in very few lines, with an unnamed Trooper who warns you about Primm's situation and refers you to someone higher up the command structure.

Tumblr media
✨️Feeling Extra today! Will choose to Focus on Crater City, but any future Author Tags shall be diverted to the next WIP in line✨️
Tagged here by @mariahwritesstuff! Much obliged :’)
Tagging these fine contestants: @doublegoblin @forthesanityofsome @lyralit @frostedlemonwriter @asterhaze @lostneedcoopcake @writernopal @an-theduckin @sabels-small-sphere
...
(1) What is the main lesson of your story (e.g. kindness, diversity, anti-war), and why did you choose it?
>> Free will is good 👍
>> Just because you can doesn't mean you should
>> Give life your own meaning
>> The dangers of being politically apathetic
I think these are self-explanatory! I think!
(2) What did you use as inspiration for your worldbuilding (like real-life cultures, animals, famous media, websites, etc.)?
Kind of expanded upon this a bit, oops
For the world-building, I'm inspired by things such as Fallout New Vegas, Night Vale, and real life. Music: tends to be a mixture of classic rock + alt + vapor wave + whatever I think is nice tossed in a dryer and pummeled to death.
For more world-building + story-telling/pacing, I am very much Inspired by these webtoons:
>> Solid State
>> The Prince of Southland
>> Lovebot
>> Electric Bones
When I tell you to go check these webtoons out, I mean Go Check Them Out because they're the reason I still have the app!
For characters, they are named/inspired by objects and it just kind of stuck until their names got rearranged. Everyone generally has a symbol/color assigned to them, idk it's probably synesthesia to some degree. But it helps me categorize things + it fits their vibes. To name a few:
>> Blair: heart, red
>> Elijah: star, yellow
>> Darcy: moon, cobalt
>> Melony: Venus flytrap, bright green
I could rant all day about their vibes and mood boards! But we only have so much attention span on this single post, yeah?
(3) What is your MC trying to achieve, and what are you, the writer, trying to achieve with them? Do you want to inspire others, teach forgiveness, help readers grow as a person?
Blair wants to prove to himself and others that he has worth and a purpose even though others/the government thinks otherwise.
Elijah wishes he could stop running from his problems and just ask for help, but that's kinda hard if [SPOILERS]. Yeah, so that's kind of a Huge bummer.
No one cares what Darcy wants. He's mean. (Any fanletters addressed to him that wind up in Frasier's pile get promptly thrown away.)
Aside from that, I've always wanted to inspire others through my work but kind of implicitly. Or like “oh have you seen that one story it's so wild” in an obscure way. Not really in a cult-following way, but like an urban legend or classic story kind of way. I would like to drop my story into the world and disappear without a trace, hehehe
(4) How many chapters is your story going to have?
42
(5) Is it fanfiction or original content? Where do you plan to post it?
Original content! Due to its Nature, I'm planning something Much Larger than a typical novel layout. Somewhere online... or somewhere else in a Metaphysical sense. Or implanted in everyone's heads as a distant memory of what could've been, hehehe
It all comes down to if I will ever be able to code as great as Elijah someday (we both hold ourselves to very high Standards, you know).
(6) When and why did you start writing?
I started writing this story July 27, 2022. Oh wait, that date has passed, it's now been a year!
But it's ok, I often forget my own birthday.
I started writing because I became fixated on the idea of just some chill guy in a hectic world then ran with it, and here I am a year later, still as obsessed with these hooligans as ever. I like the seemingly dumbass hero and intelligent villain trope, I suppose.
(7) Do you have any words of engagement for fellow writers of Writeblr? What other writers of Tumblr do you follow?
I tend to follow accounts that inspire me to write or become a better person in general. This can range from being a better writer to positivity to pushing myself to get up and be productive because lord knows I need some good ol peer pressure to jumpstart my brain.
The parting message:
Remember why you're writing. Keep your reasons somewhere you can see it, like a sticky note on your mirror. It can be a motivation/goal as simple as “because it's what Younger Me would have wanted to see.”
Also, Please organize your files/notebooks. Future You will be so thankful for that. Don't be like Blair and cover each page head to toe with multicolored pens, highlighters, and diagrams. Be more like Frasier, stay organized:
Tumblr media
Blair has provided us with a Bonus Illustration for the readers whose attention has spanned thus far, Huzzah!✨️
...
🚗 Want to rot your brain with each sporadic Crater City post? Join the taglist! Maybe I'll finish this wip someday, who knows! (ask to be added/removed): @writeouswriter @lyra-brie @digitalsatyr23

Fallout New Vegas Live-Blog Part 8
Tumblr media
I was debating story wise what happens to Victor since after you kill Mr. House he's never seen again AND I FINALLY FIGURED IT OUT!!!
It's important to note that Victor is an AI distributed between all Securitrons. Meaning Victor can jump from one Securitron to another.
Since Yes Man knows about Victor from My Courier. Once installed he turns the Victor AI offline. Similar to what Mr. House did at the battle between Goodsprings and the Powder Gangers.
"Victor seems strangely obvious to your presence. He doesn't respond to your attempt to speak with him."
Yes Man and My Courier would talk about what they should do. Since he'll be aggressive and try to kill My Courier. So as horrible as it is they decide to erase Victor's memories all the way to before he met my Courier. Since it's either that or death.
They then send his AI back to the Securitron in Goodsprings. Obviously if anything happens to that robot his AI will jump to another.
Victor gets a similar ending to the Mr. House Route.
Tumblr media
In Mr. House's Route it says, "After Mr. House regained control of New Vegas, he sent a Securitron to Goodsprings as a token of appreciation for helping the Courier. Victor was a mixed blessing, however, as he continually monitored the town for Mr. House."
Yes Man can monitor Goodsprings through Victor but my Courier has asked him not to. Victor gets to be helpful and enjoy living in Goodsprings. The people there are much more welcoming to him than before. He gets to become part of their community.
My Courier is sad he doesn't remember their bond but is happy Victor can just live his life. Victor gave her a second chance and now she's doing the same for him.
The residents of Goodsprings would even joke to the Courier how, "It's been so long since you've visited Victor has completely forgotten you." Haha ouch.
Also I like to imagine Jane's AI gets altered (the memories of Mr. House get removed) but instead she lives in the Lucky 38. Managing the Casino and no longer having to "entertain" Mr. House.
The rest of this live-blog is a short update since I was just wrapping up everything before doing the Dead Money DLC.
I saved lame President Kimball (¬_¬ ).
Tumblr media
(っ ᵔ◡ᵔ)っ Also I installed the Override Chip into the El Dorado Power Station!!!
Tumblr media
Also I got the Followers of the Apocalypse to join!
Arcade finally opened up allowing me to do his Quest. Together we recruited Enclave remnants to help at the battle of Hoover Dam!!
I can't stop laughing at the idea of Arcade explaining where all the Enclave remnants are located and my Courier going, "Oh I that area Cannibal Johnson lives there!" and Arcade becomes completely flabbergasted since he was unaware of Johnson's new nickname.
ARCADE WEARING HIS DAD'S OLD ARMOR WAS SO SWEET (ಥ◡ಥ)!!!!!!!
Tumblr media
ALSO I GOT ENCLAVE ARMOR!!!!!
Tumblr media
LOOK HOW BADASS IT IS!!! I DON'T CARE WHAT ANYONE SAYS THE ENCLAVE ARMOR IS A BILLION TIMES COOLER and sexier LOOKING THEN THE BROTHERHOOD OF STEEL'S ARMOR!!!!
Mutuals . . . I'm so sorry please forgive me but I watched the deleted scene where you could sleep with Mr. House and asjdkafv;lnc
Tumblr media
When he said, "Oh, don't be coy. You thought I wouldn't notice?" I HAD TO PAUSE THE VIDEO AND DO A LAP AROUND MY APARTMENT!!! I'm extremely glad it was cut though because I think the game's story and Mr. House's character work better without it.
Also I forgot to mention this but while killing all the Omertas a bunch of people crowded near the elevator and looked at me like this:

Anything I need to know about fallout going in, or can I just, get it and go ham?
One big recommendation is to download and use Fallout Fixt. Other than that...
1- Reading the manual is vital! With a lot of older games there isn’t much of a tutorial and they expect you to read the manual for basic information instead. Fortunately, old game manuals are actually very fun to read and you can just use the index to skip over anything that is too basic. It was written for people who have never played an RPG before.
2- It is much more fun to make your own character rather than using one of the premades, which are not really that good build-wise anyway.
3- Unfortunately, a lot of games with tons of different skills don’t manage to make them all equally relevant or important. A lot of the skills in the game have only marginal utility and can be avoided.
Skills like small guns (which includes rifles and shotguns), lockpick, and especially speech are golden while skills like throwing are far less useful. There’s a big middle ground of skills that are decent but not really worth spending that many points on.
4- The Gifted trait is broken. It lowers your skills but gives you +1 to every stat. It almost feels like cheating, so if you want to have a much easier time you should consider it. Moving some of the bonus stat points to intelligence helps offset the skill penalty. Relative to 3 and New Vegas, it is relatively difficult to permanently raise your stats (although wearing power armor is a big strength boost).
5- The Awareness perk is a good choice for your first perk at level 3. It lets you know exactly how much HP enemies you are looking at have and also what weapon they’re wielding. This can help you make more informed decisions during combat. I think it requires 5 Perception as a minimum?
6- Don’t stress too much about the initial time limit. It is actually very generous and you should have time to spare if you take care to talk to people and follow leads. Once you deliver the chip you can explore far more freely.
7- Before you go to Vault 15 or The Glow, have a piece of rope on you. You will need to use rope to really get into these places.
8- Overall using drugs for anything other than healing or dealing with radiation (which is a much smaller aspect of the game than you might think) is a bad idea.
9- Do not give Ian a weapon with burst fire.
10- A lot of people don’t like it when you talk to them with a weapon in your active item slot. Rather than putting it away, you can keep your secondary slot empty and switch to that one when talking.
11- Also worth noting that while opening your inventory in combat takes 4 action points you can use as many healing items as you want and also reload your weapons while you are there.
12- Combat-wise, Agility is king. It gives you more action points, which means more attacks and more movement.
13- Try not to start with less than 4 intelligence or the game will be very different and you will be unable to do most things. Intelligence is a pretty overpowered stat overall.
14- Money and drugs are weightless. When possible, try to trade for either cash or more stimpaks.
15- By the time you reach the midgame, it might be worth it to start putting points into energy weapons. The absolute best weapon in the game, the turbo plasma rifle, is in this category. However, it is probably not a good idea to start with a high energy weapons skill because you are very unlikely to find any in the first half of a normal playthrough.
16- This is a bit unintuitive, but if you did not tag Melee Weapons at character creation you may actually be better off fighting unarmed rather than using them, as your unarmed skill is likely to be higher (resulting in a better chance to hit).
17- Once your skills are high, it is a great idea to start using called shots to target specific body parts. The eyes in particular are the most difficult but most deadly target, especially once you get the Better Criticals perk. You can even get instant kill crits this way.
18- The combat system is not very deep, but you should not neglect making good use of movement. It’s generally far more impactful than ending your turns with AP to spare for the extra dodge chance. If you move away from a melee opponent before ending your turn, for example, they will have to spend some of their points moving up to you again before attacking and so they may get less attacks off.
For the same reason, hiding behind corners during gunfights is recommended since it can force enemies to spend a round walking up to you rather than shooting.
19- The last major thing that comes to mind is also something the manual should have drilled in well: Save often and in different slots.

One Piece Chapters 238-246
ATE WHO??? Dewey
My condolences to DuckTales fans.
Chapter 238 - Heaven’s Gate
HEAVEN’S DOOR!!!
Nico Robin reveals that the reason the combatants lost wasn’t because they were weak, but because they were high. High in the sky, not high in the drugs. For clarity.
The knight guy asks for some bizarro currency in exchange for being the crew’s bodyguard. Hmm... more than one kind of currency... just like in Fallout: New Vegas... and if I know ANYTHING about Fallout: New Vegas, this knight is a SCAMMER! Okay, I’ve solved the plot. We can move on to the next mystery now.
The knight reveals that the Gravity Modifier is actually not the intended dev route, but a risky speedrun strat that can be used to bypass the mandatory party member death scenes. Neat!
Also the knight gives them one of the plushies from Hades. Except they’re not going to die, so they’re only going to be able to use it once. Because those plushies only refresh upon death. Get it? Get it? Get it?
Tumblr media
and then usopp falls to his death because the properties of the devil fruit were the only thing keeping lufpy afloat
...Nah that’s not what happens but that’d be funny though
Tumblr media
Wow, that is hilariously tacky in a way that’s impossible to convey through text summary. Very good.
An elderly fairy appears. Lufpy thinks that’s an angel. I suppose contextually that’s logical.
So anyway the fairy reveals her life philosophy: Breaking laws is completely allowed, it’s just that enforcing them is also allowed. So if people feel like breaking laws they can just do it.
Lufpy thinks this is a good idea and begins to break laws.
Chapter 239 - Angel Beach
This chapter title ALSO sounds like a Stand name.
Sanji says that happiness is lame and then does a cartwheel. Nami gets attacked by a bird and is now shirtless.
Tumblr media
Uh Nico Robin you just described the blandest most generically accurate definition of the word “adventure” possible. What’s YOUR idea of adventure? Small self-contained puzzles? Anyone who defines “adventure” like that shouldn’t be allowed to be a college professor.
Tumblr media
I guess Oda gave up on trying to make speech bubbles not near characters be subtly contextually assignable.
There’s all kinds of wacky and weird stuff in the sky, like a harp playing pet owner named Coins.
Tumblr media
WHY IS EVERYONE CHANGING THE DEFINITION OF WORDS???
Coins’ dad is named Papaya.
Chapter 240 - Dial Power
As a Chainsaw Man fan, I would obviously love to do that. With my phone. Ha cha cha!
Lufpy sucks at using jetskis. Sanji shares saving-Lufpy-from-drowning duty with Zoro. Meanwhile, Tony Tony Chopper attempts suicide, I guess, but only Usopp cares.
Nami is good at using jetskis. I can’t wait for Nami to come in clutch during the jetski arc.
Lufpy hates Nami for her jetski behavior. Noooo... the best characters are fighting... I wonder if this is how people with bad taste felt during Luffy vs. Zoro. Which is still not the name that chapter should have had.
Tumblr media
I thought better of you, Usopp.
So the crew meets an Echo Flower from Undertale. But button-operated. So I guess it’s more of a normal device. So never mind. There are also ones that can record things other than sound. I can’t wait for someone to inevitably record violence with one of these for combat purposes.
Sanji is eating rotten nasty food again.
Nami goes to the Forbidden Forest because no one told her that was bad. It turns out Coins and Papaya are morons!
Chapter 241 - Heaven’s Judgment
Lufpy has no respect for other people’s cultures.
The Forbidden Forest is full of people who love to hunt humans. That’s nice! Nami isn’t sure if helping the human prey is a good idea. It doesn’t end up mattering because there’s a huge laser beam.
Lufpy sees very far-away cops.
Chapter 242 - Class-2 Criminals
Tumblr media
holy shit what a line of dialog
Anyway, cops are trying to make the crew pay almost as much money as there are chapters of One Piece, but they don’t really want to. Nami tells them not to resist authority, and starts assaulting cops.
Lufpy assaults cops too. Usopp says “it was all thanks to me”.
Chapter 243 - Trial
Tumblr media
lmao
Tumblr media
I can’t wait for Lufpy to recruit a carpenter and render Usopp useless
Anyway, Nami, Nico Robin, Tony Tony Chopper, and Zoro get kidnapped, presumably by cops. Stupid cops forgot to check for Lufpy, Usopp, and Sanji!
Well, all’s well that ends well. I should skip to the ending of this arc to make sure it ends well.
Oh wait, it turns out I don’t need to do that: The cops actually DO intend on causing Lufpy, Usopp and Sanji to suffer. Phew! Wait, that’s bad. Phew! It would have been bad if that were good.
Chapter 244 - SOS
Lufpy, Usopp, and Sanji are evil tourists now.
Tumblr media
...What’s Wei Stuff? I truly don’t know...
Tumblr media
Wow! Lufpy REALLY doesn’t respect other people’s cultures! COOL!!! <3
Coins turns out to be one of those white women whose special move is calling the police. Now it’s time for a laser beam to kill her! Except Lufpy uses the Hades plushie instead. Now she’s irrelevant instead of dead! Phew!
THE KNIGHT WAS A GOD???
Well, I guess that explains why he had access to Hades plushies.
Chapter 245 - Adventure on Kami's Island
The Forbidden Forest is trying really hard to kill someone. Poor forest’s a failure! :(
Lufpy and his two friends reach a video game level select.
Meanwhile, Zoro is trying to kill a fish. Also, Zoro thinks starving to death is pretty great. No wonder Zoro and Sanji don’t get along.
Zoro makes a Tarzan reference. Hmm, this is technically a new joke from Zoro, but... if anything, I think his power level just got lower... strange...
Chapter 246 - Satori, Vassal of the Forest of no Return
Lufpy, Usopp, and Sanji decide they like balls. Usopp’s face gets torn apart piece by piece. Everything turns out fine though, other than the fact that snakes are attacking and everyone is explosion.
An evil ball announces his presence. The evil ball is like a cool martial arts guy or something.
Oh hey, I finished Volume 26. Phew! Now I don’t have to worry about the volume number being 26 anymore! Check back in tomorrow, where I’ll be reading the entirety of Volume 27.

this is my incomplete list of stuff bethesda fucking ruined about the fallout series feel free to add
supermutants in the original games are genetically engineered humans who are said to be way smarter than humans are and because of this see themselves as the race that should rule the planet, which was both criticism of white supremacy and just. interesting worldbuilding. it is incredibly clear that bethesda’s fallout games took one look at their design, thought of hulk and made them into agressive, hard-to-kill monsters, who are barely capable of human speech and eat humans for some reason. they bascially reduced them from an interesting faction with characters with diffrent worldviews and creative npcs into a random mob class with no motives or clear intelligence
one of the things you see in the world of fallout is that society COULD move on from the nuclear war, rebuild everything they lost and create a new society, but they are either too busy wanting to profit off the people’s lack of resources or are unable to get out of their mindset of “the world has ended” or are stuck in infighting to move on. like there is a reason to why the people didn't rebuild by now. and yet, people still are trying to rebuild in a sense. the fight for hoover dam for example is all about political ideology and is a fight about how to rebuild society - what laws should be in action, after which old "empire" should the world be remodeled, etc. new fallout games just don’t seem to actually grasp that concept at all, with e.g. a hyper-futuristic organization like the institute randomly appearing out of nowhere, people wallowing in the ruins of old civilizations with no actual interest in rebuilding, but there also isn't anything thats actually stopping them from rebuilding. the post apocalypse is more of a scene dressing than an actual topic, especially in fallout 4. it feels like that theme just completely disappeared from the games and it makes them worse
interplay’s/obsidian’s games often had an ironic wit to pieces of worldbuilding - the vault tec mascot was a joke in the sense of “imagine you flee certain death into a bunker and barely escape with your life and there is a mascot in the bunker”. The idea of society being obsessed with atomic energy and atomic war is supposed to be scary. like it’s supposed to be ridiculous that every song is about atom bombs and radioactivity and nuclear death. it’s suposed to be ridiculous that the company is called nuka-cola. bethesda ignored this at every turn when they put vault tec guy into every piece of marketing they have. And while the newer fallout games seem to like the atomic-themed ads and actually scaled up the whole aesthetic by 1000%, it’s very obvious that it IS just an aesthetic to them. from shooting mini-atom bombs in fallout 4 to shooting off actual atomic missles via launch codes as a fun multiplayer quirk, it’s clear that they don’t seem to actually care much about if their games have to say anything tbh
yes, bottle caps are *one* currency people use a legitimate form of payment. but the system is super unstructured and every faction that wants to rise to power wants to introduce a new currency. in fallout 2 there is NCR money, bottle caps and the town of Redding uses their whole own currency, in fallout new vegas there is NCR money, legion money, and bottle caps. In the newer fallout games there is only one currency and that is bottle caps. Fallout 1, 2 and New Vegas all take place in the same general area, so it would make sense that that currency would exit in all of these places but there is NO way people on the east coast use the exact same makeshift currency as the west coast and also it’s very obvious that little thought went into how that currency works, where all those bottle caps come from etc. and that they just liked the quirky worldbuilding idea of trading in bottle caps
the vaults in the interplay fallout games all at least serve some puropose. like. those were the bunkers & humanity’s last hope, right? so the experiments conducted with and in those bunkers MAKE SENSE to the situation that the world is in. like. a bunker that “accidentally” can’t close the door so vault tec can check if the radiation is bad enough to actually kill. like, vault tec is supposed to be evil and uncaring of single human lives, but in general they also want humanity to continue to live on. so killing a whole vault with radiation to see how bad the radiation is is useful information to them and for the other bunkers. like, yeah, the first games (& especially new vegas) also had some *weird* bunkers, but these were either meant as a joke or experiments that oversaw actual human behaviours, to see if a certain ideology/system/form of rulership worked. like yeah, a vault where every conflict is resoved through gambling is a bit more out there, but it still makes sense that the combination of god complex that vault tec had over the survivors, paired with an interest in finding a way for society to progress could create a test like that. In Bethesda’s fallout games the vaults are just evil with no real reason to it or like, they just exist so they can go “wouldn’t that be fucked up”. like, i will not shit on all vaults, from time to time they actually have some good stuff in there, but what is the point of a vault that induces aggression via white noise, what is the point of “an experiment vault to see how rich people deal with their wealth being taken away“ - the rich and successful people were the ONLY ones that could get themselves into vaults in the first place and WHY would vault tec have any actual interest in studying how people reacted when their money was taken away, “an experiment vault to see if chem addicts can successfully recover from addictions” doesn’t help with the situation the bunkers were made in, like. a lot of the vaults are just fucked up for being fucked-up’s sake.
bethesda seems so unable to come up with own, original worldbuilding that it feels pointless that every game takes place in a new us state. like, they added nothing over the years and only removed stuff they didn’t like (like the nightkin, the centaurs etc), but the world - especially the mobs - seem to be exactly the same everywhere which makes no sense - deathclaws always exist as the toughest enemy, the same mutated bugs and animals are everywhere and there’s brahmin every time (it’s actually more wild to me that they are called “brahmin” everywhere. like. all over the us?), the only original thing the games added until now seems to be the synths and that sucks, because the syths are devoid of any interesting discussion that could have been had around them and are just a stand-in for racism
the brotherhood of steel is a facist in-group with an us-vs-everyone mentality that doesn’t let outsiders into their ranks while they hoard technology and stuff that could help people because they don’t trust them while also seeing themselves as the only people who should be trusted with deadly weapons. also they spend tons of time developing new, even deadlier weapons and are generally, if you put 2 seconds of critical thought into playing the game, not good fucking people. the fact that the games aren’t super blunt about how they are on the villain side of the story apparently made bethesda believe that they are the cool, good new us military that wants to bring order into the world. yeah.

I’m excited for a bunch of upcoming games: Slime Rancher 2, The Outer Worlds 2, Ooblets (coming to consoles and steam), Sunset Hills, Tchia and Lil Gator Game; just to name a few. But one of the games I’m fascinated about the most, isn’t an actual licensed game. It’s a mod called Fallout London.
I honestly couldn’t get into Fallout 3, literally 1 hour in after leaving the Vault I just turned off the console and never picked it up again. And for years I didn’t pick up another Fallout game until I was told about Fallout New Vegas and suddenly I was re-interested in the Fallout brand. I loved the storytelling, world and characters. I got excited about Fallout again. And then... Fallout 4 came out and was basically Fallout 3 but with a few extra steps and I just couldn’t be bothered and just didn’t care again. And the less said about Fallout 76 the better. I know it has it’s fans but I am not one of them.
So, when youtube recommended to me a trailer for Fallout London, I was already interested because... well, I’m British and the idea of a Fallout game set in any part of the UK immediately perked my interest. And so I watched the trailer and was fascinated. And I have been keeping an eye on it since, including the latest gameplay trailer. I know it might be a wait until it’s official releases but I’m more than willing to wait and see what happens with it.

So, spoilers for the TV series "Fallout".
BELOW THE CUT
So, i really love the atmosphere of the show and how it depicts the wastelands, but only on ambient, i do not like how surface people are depicted, there are no traders, farmers, guards, caravans or anything that is not violence and slaughter. Just angry people and raiders.
The BoS is depicted really well, but in a twisted way from the isolation of Fallout 2 and New Vegas, even more authoritarian and militaristic than the West Coast BoS, and im of the idea that the Brotherhood is now under a single supreme Elder after the restoration of contacts with the Washington branch. Speaking that, they also showed how they still don't care about common people, but just about pre-war tech.
The premise that Ghouls turn naturally into ferals is something that i really don't like or understand, we already know how the process of transformation occurs in a human, so making Ghouls turning ferals ALWAYS is something wrong for me.
I still need to understand how Shady Sands get targeted by a warhead and WHO also did it. My bet is that the Brotherhood-NCR escalated so much that the BoS used a warhead on the Republic as a last resort, or that the NCR lose the first Battle of Hoover Dam and the Brotherhood of Steel aligned themselves with the Legion in order to finally put an end to the bear.
I wouldn't be surprised if at the end we find out that McLean and the Brotherhood are the evil guys, and the NCR remnants and Lee Moldaver are trying to restore order the NCR in California.

unprompted writing bc im hyperfixating about fallout new vegas
Can read it below the break, spoilers for many major quests.
6's eyes flutter open lazily, taking in the room around her, she recognizes that feeling. And the headache that follows. Last time she felt like this she was in Doc Mitchell's care.
This time the headache is from the Med-x, not a 9mm.
She rolls over over to see ED-E patiently waiting for her, hovering next to her bed like always. It's 2284, New Year's Day on the Strip. Or at least it would have been if they weren't dealing with a thousand issues at once. Refugees clogged the Strip and Freeside, the Followers were overwhelmed, and her army of Securitrons were trying to keep the peace.
She stands and puts on her clothes, leaving off her blackjack duster. And moseys on out into the penthouse meeting room, ED-E following closely behind.
Sitting at the table are some of her closest advisors, Arcade Gannon, in his Remnant Power Armor, and Veronica Santangelo, in her modified suit of T-45d. The leaders of many of the most powerful groups from throughout the Mojave also sit at the table: Raquel, the new elder of the Boomers; Elder Hardin, of the Brotherhood's Mojave Chapter; Marcus, mayor of Jacobstown; The King, from Freeside; Julie Farkas from the Followers; a delegate from each of the major towns, Goodsprings, Novac, Westside, and a representative each from the Three Families.
As always, she was late, and they were all screaming at each other by the time she arrived.
She takes her seat at the head of the table. And everyone falls silent, she looks tired, it's been a long 2 years.
The delegate from Goodsprings speaks up first, "Ma'am, what are you planning to do? We've already lost Primm and the majority of the I-15."
"Well, the Gun Runners pulled out weeks ago, so we've lost a huge potential store of weapons to help, didn't we?" Veronica's voice is low, trying to consider all possibilities.
She thinks back on what Ulysses had said to her in the Divide years ago, "Mojave'll be easy prey for them. They'll start emerging throughout the Mojave in time, might be years. Probably less. They breed fast, hunt in groups, more than enough to bring down the strongest in the Mojave."
Slowly, 6 stands up from her chair – robbed from Caesar after the Second Battle for Hoover Dam – and steps quietly over to the window, overlooking the west side of the Mojave, able to see everything from Goodsprings, Red Rock, and Jacobstown. And all the fires to the Southwest past Goodsprings. Where Primm used to be, that the Boomers turned into a smoking crater to stop the spread.
"The Khans had the right idea, leaving. It was the only way I'd be able to help them get away from what was coming."
6's voice cast a shadow of gloom and doubt over every representative.
"We're going to die here, in the Mojave. Nothing in the Big Empty can help us against what's gonna come crawling up outta the Divide."

Rena Reviews Euro Demo 67!
I don't remember many demo discs I had as a kid, just this and one other come to mind right now (which I'm also downloading) - but I'm just gonna chuck my thoughts on revisiting this silly psx demo disc here! It was in the official uk playstation magazine, i used to play the shit out of it over and over but only remember a couple of the games on there. Maybe I'll remember more while playing, who knows!
Tumblr media
look at this sexy fucking disc. This invokes absolutely nothing.
The playable games on here are:
Asterix: The Gallic War
Bugs Bunny & Taz: Time Busters
Chicken Run
Cricket 2000
Frogger 2: Swampy's Revenge
Ms. Pac-Man Maze Madness
Re-Volt 2 (RC Revenge)
Time Crisis: Project Titan
anyway. Join me under the cut as i talk about each of these!
straight away LOOK AT THIS SCREEN
Tumblr media
guys i think my demo disc has covid
the music is too generic to describe lmao but it goes very well with the imagery
anyway
Asterix:
I didnt grow up with Asterix! So there isn't the full nostalgic attachment there, but theres some *vague memories* here? Anyway I don't think I played much of this because it's dogshit.
Tumblr media
It's a *VERY* rudimentary turn based strategy where you pour potions on provinces to reinforce them, then you enter an attack phase where the bigger number wins, then Caesar's Legions attack (fallout new vegas omg????)
At the end of the attack phase you enter a minigame, one of them is a 3d platformer where you play as Obelix
Tumblr media
VERY bare-bones. There's no music *anywhere* in this demo. It's also all just very very slow. Won't be buying this when it comes out :/
Next up: Bugs and Taz!
This one is how I found the demo disc! It was one of the ones i played over and over, lets see if it holds up lol
There's thankfully a lot more to talk about here... and music!!!
Tumblr media
This is a pretty standard 3D platformer at its core, but you can switch between Bugs and Taz, or you can play it co-op! I imagine that's how its meant to be played. If you're playing single player the other character stands entirely still, however you can hit the left bumper to summon them back to you.
You collect carrots throughout, as well as medallions that I imagine don't do anything in the demo. They seem to be your stars.
When you have enough carrots you can participate in a minigame, the one I remember is the Pelota against the Aztecs.
Tumblr media
It's a fairly standard game, if you're playing single player though you *are* outnumbered - but it's not too hard anyway. You just steal the ball and try to throw it through the hoop.
The one I don't remember however, is
Tumblr media
Baladi lessons? It's a fairly standard simon says type game but
Tumblr media Tumblr media
it got gender in it
all in all, neat lil demo! I mostly remember finding rabbitholes and digging around in them because I thought it was insanely cool that bugs could go underground lol
Next up: Chicken Run!
this is the *other* game I played on repeat! But it *scared the shit out of me*. You'll see why.
Tumblr media
So... this is a stealth game
Tumblr media
You play as Ginger and you must *be careful of the dogs*
Tumblr media
The entire demo is dreary with unsettling ambient music, why the fuck did they make the chicken run game a metal gear clone????
Anyway, you are quite literally a chicken being chased by fucking dogs. and if you get caught a menacing stinger plays as you see this
Tumblr media
Was a bit much for me 2 year old heart i must say! Couldn't quite handle that!
Anyway, the stealth is really simple and easy, as one would expect. There's not much going on here other than childhood trauma.
Next: Cricket 2000!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
yeah
Next up issss: Frogger 2!
Tumblr media
Okay, I had no idea this existed at all. What the fuck?
Whenever I think of frogger sequels I think of those weird ps2 ones, but this is straight up frogger
Tumblr media
Rather than the traditional level though you're presented with a themed gauntlet, such as the first stage, a garden themed one. You are tasked with saving frogger's children.
You might be wondering, what happens if you get run over by a lawnmower?
Tumblr media
he explodes into chunks. What the fuck?
The second level is a haunted house
Tumblr media
This is genuinely an oddity to me, I never expected them to try implement traditional frogger gameplay into something like this. Might play it on stream at some point, I'm intrigued. That being said, I definitely dont remember this. Pretty decent? The music fucking OWNS btw
youtube
NEXT: Ms. Pacman Maze Madness!
Tumblr media
I had no idea this existed. But first I gotta say
REST IN PEACE MS PAC-MAN
she lives on in our hearts. Fuck pac-mom, ms. pac-man was where its at
Anyway this is. really *really* boring.
Tumblr media
It's that era of pac where they clearly had no idea what they were doing, which still goes on to this day (i say this affectionately, i love pac-man) but this one was a fuckin MISS
It's trying to translate the mazes into something completely different, more a labyrinth than the single screen mazes of yore, with block pushing puzzles and launchpads, a gauntlet you must get through while collecting as many pellets as possible
and its really lame and boring im sorry. I like that the ghosts seem to wear different attire in each level, i like that my gal ms. pac-man is here
i dont like much else. its slow and tedious as hell
however
Tumblr media
ROCKET LAUNCHER???? HUH???
Two games left!
Revolt 2!
I forgot to take screenshots but... this is an RC Racing game, it's really a cart racer with really confusing level design, a slight bump in the road will get your car flying across the entire universe and world. There's a bit where you drive under a jeep though which is pretty cute! @is-the-driving-good? No I'm afraid, ridge racer this is not.
Anyway I'm kinda rushing a lil bit because I'm tired and the last one is TIME CRISIS!!! ITS FUCKIN TIME CRISIS, DUDE!!! I love Time Crisis!!!
Time Crisis Titan
Tumblr media
Alas... This was not the saving grace this demo disc needed. I can't get far at all for reasons I'll get into, but what *is* there is full of the silly janky charm Time Crisis is known for.
Tumblr media
Love these silly models! Love em
Anyway, why is this on here? Why would you put *Time Crisis* on a demo disc? This *will not* shift copies, put it as a video or something, not as a playable demo! It's a fucking lightgun game, this is clearly made for a ps1 lightgun peripheral, but people are going to be playing this with a controller!
the crosshair is incredibly slow and it's VERY difficult to aim properly which is why i didnt get far, it's just... either someone is gonna not own a lightgun and see this and think its just shit, or own one and probably plan on getting it anyway, all that's needed here is a video feature showing it off, having it be playable is *a bad move*
this is likely a pretty good time crisis game! Most of the negative reviews I can see mention the beautifully crunchy graphics being bad so the gameplays probably fine, but by advertising it like this youre convincing people it isnt.
ANYWAY
this was disappointing lmfao
a fun trip down memory lane, but yeah none of these were really that fun at all. Thankfully, the PS2 demo disc I'm downloading has much more interesting titles. Will be doing the same thing with it when I can. I wrote this one over the course of a few hours, but that one will likely have more put into it.
If you read this far thank you very much lmao, and remember:

Fixing Fallout 4, pt. 1: Sole Survivor Backstory (my pitch)
So I've been getting into Fallout lately and, no surprises here, I think New Vegas is great and Fallout 4 is the definition of style over substance and sends me into a nitpicky hell every time I play it (why was there just...a skeleton in someone's diner. Why would they just let a skeleton be in their diner?)
So while I keep playing Fallout 4 and New Vegas I'm going to just talk about all the things that hit me--they can be fixes I think up, or complaints about the world, whatever. It'll all be tagged 'fallout thoughts.'
DLC's will not be included in any of my analysis other than Honest Hearts and Old World Blues, as I haven't gotten to the others yet.
PT 1: The Sole Survivor's Backstory
If I can sum up my biggest problem with Fallout 4 for me personally it's the lack of freedom in character building. In my runthroughs of New Vegas I've played, to name a few:
1. A Follower studying to be a doctor who took the job as Courier for extra money because she had to take care of her mother after her father died of cancer. Chooses Yes Man.
2. A former Centurion who ran from the Legion after Hoover Dam, surviving by performing various odd jobs and happened to go with Courier at the wrong time--sided with Legion at the end.
3. A teenager girl from New California who became a Courier as part of her mission to travel the Wasteland in search of her missing father who the NCR claims was killed, but his body never recovered. NCR ending.
The beauty of the Courier backstory is that you are a Courier. But everything surrounding that is completely your choice. Everything before 'being a courier' is a blank slate.
In Fallout 4, I'm either a lawyer with a husband and baby or a soldier guy with a wife and baby. This already takes a ton of backstory choice away from the player--but besides that, really makes a lot of the game make no sense. If you play as the woman especially.
(How are you able to use so many guns, armor, and weapons fresh out of the vault? How can you use power armor when you just have a law degree? It makes sense sort of if you pick the male PC but not at all as the female one.)
Not to mention the biggest issue: your son has been kidnapped. Why are you wasting time on anything else? Why would you bother exploring or doing quests? Fuck you Preston, no I'm not helping another settlement! Where is my son?
It's immersion breaking, to say the least. In New Vegas 'fuck you Benny you asshole' feels like the kind of revenge driven motivation that can be set aside if you feel like something is more important. No one is in imminent danger. Benny will still be alive (presumably) to punch when you're ready.
My Solution
Now let me preface this by saying I don't consider myself a brilliant writer or anything. But the easiest way to fix this problem is just...giving the Sole Survivor a less specific backstory.
Here's my pitch: you are a soldier who was decorated for valor in the Sino-American war. Because the government sees nuclear war on the horizon, you along with a group of other elite soldiers are hand-picked for a secret government project where you will be cryogenically frozen and, once things are settled, used to help retake and retame the apocalyptic wasteland.
Something goes wrong, you're the only person to get out alive.
What was your life before you joined the military? Don't know. Family? Don't know. Why were you picked for this? Don't know. All up to the player to figure out.
As for why you're the Sole Survivor, that mystery can be the main thrust of the plot--but not only is there not the whole son thing pushing you along, it also actually encourages exploring, talking to various factions, and figuring out what your place will be in the post apocalyptic world and how you want to affect it.
Further, keeping the military part of the backstory makes it realistic that a fresh-faced pre war person can jump out of the vault guns blazing and able to wield power armor.
Anyway, these were my first off the cuff ideas I got while talking to a friend. Would love to hear additions if anyone thinks of them!

I've got two questions for you.
1( What would you considered to be the darkest plot point in Anges story? A majority of the couriers in the fandom seem to be fine or relatively happy in their stories but Anges is older than most couriers and that her personality is vastly different than the "Dumb silly courier who sides with yes man and saved New Vegas" so with that it seems that Anges story has a lot of dark points in her story.
2( What made you make Anges vastly different than the typical couriers? Now I am guilty of this by making my couriers relativity rounded people who have seen traumatic things that sent them over the edge to make them side with their respective factions and cause them to behave in ways people they didn't expect them to (like who took a complete U turn and joined the legion). Did you want to move away from the common over used "Dumbass chaotic courier" or did you feel that Anges had a greater story to tell than to be buried underneath the rest of the fandoms couriers?
Hi anon! Thank you for your questions, and I’m really glad you appreciate the lengths I’ve gone to in developing Agnes and writing her story. There’s a lot of well-thought intention in everything I do with her, ha ha.
To answer your first question, I try to avoid discussing specific details of IKROAH’s story to as to avoid “spoilers,” not because I necessarily care about making sure nobody ever knows anything I’m planning, but because I prefer the story to stand on its own so that people can get invested in it organically for what it is and for how I’m telling it, not because of what’s happening down the line. That being said, Agnes getting shot in the head is obviously a dark point: for someone who has already lived such a difficult life, this brush with death is obliterating. It destroys her senses of security and herself, and when your life has been so terrible up to this point and then you nearly die, it’s understandable to sink into total and utter despair over how that’s all there is. The only thing that quiets that despair enough to get out of bed in the morning is the short-sighted, reckless idea of revenge. Wrath is easier to bear than grief. Makes you feel like you're still in control of something, at least.
Of course, that’s just one extremely early example in the plot of IKROAH. It does keep right on a hurtin’ after all, and the story’s just begun. But we’ll just have to see.
As for your second question, I made Agnes because I wanted to make her the kind of character that I would have liked to see if I wasn’t the one who made her. Does that make sense? Similar to how I made her transsexual in a very specific, intentional way so as to create my own desired representation (one that feels very material, physical, and lived-in; it is not tacked-on or perfunctory in the slightest), a lot of what went into creating Agnes was stuff that I felt personally starved for, primarily the personal maturity and storied world-weariness that comes with the long haul of adulthood. A lot of her other traits followed that aim. There’s also, as you said, definitely an element of wanting to tell a greater story with Agnes than just the story of Fallout: New Vegas but with her there. I like to think of IKROAH as a character study more than anything else: a mediation on the nature of being a video game protagonist where you should be some kind of superman, and a demonstration of the hard ceiling on unlikely heroism when your “hero” is a miserable, incapable, unwilling anxious wreck who is above all else a coward who desperately wishes none of this was happening.

Author Interview Tag
I was tagged by @iris-best-taken-in-small-doses, thank you for tagging me! <3
Name: Vee
Fandoms: Primarily Sherlock BBC, but also RDJ Holmes, Harry Potter, and the Fallout games universe, plus Supernatural and bits of Doctor Who which I’ve seen and liked
Where you post: Ao3, I love this site
Most popular multi-chapter fic: So far it’s my first ever published fic from earlier of this godforsaken year, Harry Potter and the Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, which has just a few days ago surpassed 2k hits. It’s a crossover between HP/SH, and I must admit I do neglect it a little because I have a second fic I publish, which brings us to....
Favourite story you’ve written till date: Definitely Reichenbach Falls. I speed-wrote the first 8-and-a-bit episodes over the course of 2 months while also studying for transfer exams, and I keep my pace up and it is my main focus at the moment. It’s also the most ambitious crossover I’m attempting, because it is the Holy Trinity of SuperWhoLock, and a Gravity Falls AU, so it offers a lot of lore I am proud that I came up with. It has its own challenges I like to tackle, especially when it comes to intertwining characters from numerous TV shows to coherently worked together, plus their character arcs and character developments that are to come. I hide easter eggs here and there and put some of my soul into it, so it is very dear to me. I think I am doing the job adequately so far, but time will tell. :) I do love HPatAoSH, because it is my first fic ever and I am still excited about it, but I put it on the backburner and procrastinate on the chapters I post usually
Fic you were nervous to post: Both my big series, really. One never knows what reception they’re going to get, and we all hope to get the characters to interact just right. The HP crossover because it has two timelines that later intertwine in 1997 when the Golden Trio asks the Baker Street Dumbass Detective Duo for help and I need to make certain corrections in some earlier chapters. Reichenbach Falls because it is SuperWhoLock and as I said, it’s huge, 3 parts in 1 work, so 300 chapters give or take in total, and I hope to do my best with everyone’s characterisation.
How you choose your titles: Depends. HP/SH was a bit self-explanatory, and I think it fits well into the AU and foretells what’s up in a sense that you know who is involved and if you know both fandoms, you get a whiff of a couple shenanigans. Reichenbach Falls was a bit difficult to name and I stalled on it, but then on one hot summer day that I spent cowering inside the house like the pale gremlin I am, I thought hm,,,,, the show is called Gravity Falls, but I can’t use that of course. And then I remembered that Reichenbach is a thing, the waterfall is in canon as well and BAM - Reichenbach Falls. It’s all more about a sudden epiphany than hard thinking, it comes by itself.
Do you outline: Yes, but do I stick to it? Nah. I do write steps for each episode for RF, but those serve only as a mild reminder of what the end goal is, and I wing the rest to my standard. It works well so far. With HP/SH, I just wing it and rely on the past chapters because as I mentioned, I’m a sorrowful procrastinator on this one for now. My outlines are general which gives me space to improvise and improve on the run, which I like, it doesn’t restrict me in any self-induced way, so I prevent mental blocks nicely.
Complete: Living Musical, which is a one-shot I wrote for Steph from inevitably-johnlocked. Fluffy, too! And it needs revision because I wrote it in 4 hours until it was 1am and I have no recollection of that evening anymore. And... god, I need to fix the typos. *facepalms*
In Progress: HP/SH crossover and Reichenbach Falls I linked above already. They’re plenty to take care of :D
Coming soon/not yet started: this is what I am excited about! I have a new AU in mind, either some postapocalyptic wasteland AU, but most probably also an AU of the game Fallout: New Vegas at the same time (it’s basically the same concept). I have the basic plot in mind and down, and ohhhhh guysssss I really like it. I’d also like to make it an interactive fic where the readers may choose which factions John and Sherlock could join, which would affect the ending of the fic, much like what happens in the game, but I’m not decided on this. But there is great potential, I think, though I need to make a big mindmap and brainstorm all that would need to be involved, so there’s lots of lore to consider (which I already got started on). It would be another huge fic, and I plan to write at least half of all that could be published before sending it to ao3, possibly. We will see, but you can see how my mind is overworking itself already... >:) it looks quite badass (but that’s just me so far), and its working name is Fallout: New London. Actually, there’s a prologue and first two chapters that are constant (meaning that it is firmly locked to the AU and can’t be influenced by choices) and in progress already and semi-drafted because I am a psycho like that, but no details yet! I have no self-control.. but yeah, this is the biggest one I’m excited about out of all the fics my mind invents.
Do you accept prompts: ehhhh, maybehaps? I don’t know. Probably not at the moment, maybe in a year or so. I like the idea of doing Christmas prompts, so maybe in 300 days approximately, who knows?
Upcoming story you are most excited to write: Currently, it stays on Reichenbach Falls and its 2 later seasons, because that’s when things get real >:)) also Fallout: New London. so much johnlock in sight.
Upcoming story you are most excited about: Due to my lack of time at the present moment, I nowadays mostly revisit some comfort fics if I feel like shit, but I do keep my eye out on @iris-best-taken-in-small-doses‘ The Corvus That Calls at Night. I am subscribed to the ao3 profile so once it an email popped up and I saw ‘medieval’ and all the other priceless tags (pls check them out I love them) I went oo >:D I am merely waiting for my holiday spirit to kick in fully so I can put my feet up and catch up to my reading; there’s also @simplyclockwork‘s Hired Gun I keep my eyes on, and I patiently wait for @jbaillier‘s Messages From Deep Waters -- I remember that back in August(?) she posted a post about doing research on sea fish and how to gut them? Not sure on the English word or if I’m correct at all right now, but hmmm Scotland staged AU, I like that. Also her You Go To My Head stories that are coming, I love them dearly, and I am so excited there’s going to be more Medical Husbands content :’)

Top 5 Games, ever...?
This was sort of on my mind, considering the recent GOTY post I made. Come explore the hyperfixations that managed to stick around long enough to be my top 5 list.
5. Uhhhhhh
Tumblr media
So turns out I haven’t figured out what number 5 is yet. I suppose instead I’ve got to split it among the honourable mentions, huh.
Kirby Super Star Ultra is probably the best game from the GBA/DS era of the series and is just a blast to play. It introduced Masked Dedede, and all the banging music and memes that come with it, and probably deserves a spot here just for that.
The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth removes all the awkward Flash Stuff from the excellent original, and adds so, so much more content- the game’s final expansion still isn’t out yet as of writing but even now there’s just so much to unlock. While some aspects of the game can be pretty unforgiving, you probably aren’t going to be exposed to the worst of it unless you get into it pretty hardcore, and if you do, you’ll get used to it. It’s a roguelike, after all.
Speaking of roguelikes, FTL: Faster than Light is chaotic yet serene, brutal but fair, and a bunch of other pretentious dichotomies wrapped into a neat little bow. It takes some getting used to the mechanics, but once you get the hang of it, building your little ship up and up in the face of all odds is extremely satisfying. Have fun dying hopefully not too many times.
SPEAKING of permadeath, Realm of the Mad God gets a spot here just out of sheer hours I’ve spent with it. After a messy few years with a not-so-great owner lead me to dropping the game, it seems finally to have recovered and has devs and community that actually freaking care about it, which is nice. Also, it’s free, and the recent transition to unity has the game looking better and playing smoother than 12-year-old me could ever have dreamed of.
Terraria isn’t just 2D Minecraft btw, its actually more of an RPG/Metroidvania thing, you probably know at this point, but its pretty good hey. Still haven’t fully dove into 1.4 but considering I thought Red was done at 1.1 I’m not complaining with what I have played.
 4. Fallout: New Vegas
Tumblr media
(...ish??)
I’d argue that between the primitiveness of the original Fallout games (I’ve tried to get into them, but I just can’t) and how…meh… the other Bethesda ones are, New Vegas is the only one in the series to stand up strong. Obsidian’s excellent writing and tweaks to the gameplay of 3 make New Vegas feel like an actual world, rich and characterised, which was something I found lacking in previous open-world RPGs I’d played up until that point (which admittedly might just have been Skyrim). It’s a game that challenges you to make choices that actually matter for more than the mere moments of an altered dialogue tree, both in dialogue and character building, which helps make the game actually replayable. It is also the first game in a long time that really sold the idea of DLC on me, seeing as each of the game’s 4 expansions adds an entire new region of world with its own stories and unique gameplay, tying together with the main plot but standing on their own. I am excluding Gun Runner’s Arsenal from this for obvious reasons, though it isn’t like GRA is a bad DLC or anything- on the contrary, the sheer scope of modifications and munitions makes playing a repair/science-based character incredibly fulfilling- but it just isn’t at the same scope as the other 4 (Courier’s stash barely counts seeing as its just oops! All preorder bonuses).
New Vegas is one of the few games I have actually 100% completed, achievements and all, but I’m still pretty sure there are bits I’ve missed, paths I haven’t taken, characters I haven’t talked to. Despite its inhospitability, the Mojave is always a comfortable place to return to.
 3. VA-11 Hall-A
Tumblr media
(Hey look, my phone background)
Vallhalla is a masterclass in storytelling, atmosphere, and aesthetic. Like all good cyberpunk dystopias, you get themes of class and transhumanism and artificial intelligence, but they aren’t the point of Vallhalla. Through the window and lens of cyberpunk and PC98 nostalgia is focussed a surprisingly human story centred around the protagonist, Jill, which through multiple replays still hits me in the feels just so. Of course, Jill’s story is not the only one being discussed, as every single patron of the bar has their own life going on, and the glimpses we get imply a rich, often interconnected, world. Glitch City is, frankly, a shithole, and it’s not like you don’t get some assholes coming into the bar while you’re working it. The first patron you serve, in fact, is a great example of this- Donovan D. Dawson, essentially a parody of J. Jonah Jameson, is a colossal prick and knows it- but its clear he has his own system of morals and it is mentioned that he’s excellent at his job, much as he gripes about it. He’s rude and more than a little sexist, but frustratingly charismatic and authoritative, and he’s just one of many people who show up throughout the game. Vallhalla is the perfect game to sit down, grab your preferred beverage, and just relax with.
 2. Total Annihilation
Tumblr media
(This image is on the steam page for this one, despite blatantly not being from vanilla TA)
I think I actually need to explain this one. Total Annihilation was a game released in 1997 made largely by Chuck Taylor, who would later go on to produce spiritual successor Supreme Commander. It’s an RTS game featuring exclusively robotic units with a fairly chunky aesthetic, allowing the visuals to age better than some, and a fully orchestrated soundtrack by Jeremy Soule, who would later go on to do work on a whole bunch of stuff, most notably Skyrim.
Total Annihilation is an intensely nostalgic game for me, being one of the first games I ever got to play as a kid outside of edutainment stuff, and I’d argue still holds up today (especially with the excellent Escalation mod). What it lacks in story (it’s pretty basic, but functional) it makes up for being miles ahead of its time mechanically, being the first (?) RTS to function in 3 dimensions- heights of things actually matter, hills exist and certain units climb them better than others, shooting down airplanes is difficult without anti-air but possible if you aim *just* right. While appearing pretty similar and having largely analogous units, the two factions of Arm and Core are well fleshed-out in terms of aesthetic and playstyle- Arm preferring fast and cheap equivalents to Core’s slow but powerful- and the unit variety is sufficient that strategies can vary wildly based on the map. Both campaigns as well as those from the game’s expansions are challenging, but satisfying, limiting the units you can produce to force exploration of different playstyles.
Total Annihilation isn’t something I tend to binge play for hours anymore, but I’ll pick it up for a bit every so often, and I don’t see that stopping for a long time (especially due to the recent steam release).
 1. Pokémon Emerald
Tumblr media
(At the top, where it belongs)
Yeah, this was inevitable. Pokémon is my favourite series ever; Emerald is my favourite in the series. Go figure.
Emerald, being the final game for the franchise’s days on the Game Boy, reflects everything Game Freak had learned in the first 3 generations of the series’ history. The game’s balance is challenging but fair, never spiking so tough that it is insurmountable but never holding your hand either. The AI opponents are throwing odd combinations of mons and moves at you from every corner, double battles are everywhere but rarely mandatory, and the variety of available mon both before and during the postgame is excellent. The added features on top of Ruby and Sapphire are great- Battle Tents serve to replace 3 of the contest halls (they should have all been under one roof to begin with) and provide a taste of what would later be available in the Battle Frontier. The Frontier is probably the single most expansive and challenging postgame in any Pokémon game, providing the game with a longevity that is sorely needed due to the inaccessibility of Pre-DS multiplayer. The game also manages to tie together the plot of both Ruby and Sapphire into something that feels natural, and provides the series’ first ever actual cutscene, which felt a lot cooler at the time than it sounds now. The return of animated sprites gives the Pokémon a level of life far beyond the static sprites of RSFRLG, and in my eyes wouldn’t feel the same until Black and White several years later. The return of the Pokégear phone in the form of Match Call, as irritating as it is to some, makes the world feel alive in a way that Sinnoh and Kanto probably never will, in addition to making grinding a fair bit less tedious and more beneficial. It is, altogether, probably the perfect Pokémon experience, and in my opinion only one other game comes close (its Platinum).
Oh also, they got rid of the font from Ruby and Sapphire, thank fuck, that shit is atrocious.

Weekly Update
It’s a privilege to write about personal shit this week.
There’s not much I can add to the conversation about the election, suffice to say it was both better and worse than expected, and I’m glad that society isn’t immediately collapsing, at least this week.
Which is to say I’ve never been so glad to focus on my stupid, deeply low-stakes life updates. Obviously, the future is still uncertain and there will be plenty of work to do in the days and years ahead, but a week ago, I wasn’t certain if I’d be witness to a reality where questions like “how did a week of not drinking go” and “what are you playing” still matter.
So without further ado...
It was a challenging week, obviously.
Not just the election- I’m talkin’ for like- EVERYTHING. Home life. Work life. Creative life. I could go on. You get the idea.
I went on full blown quarantine as of last Friday after learning a member of my household may have covid. You wouldn’t think it was much of a change from my normal every day, but man, I did not realize just how many little things were working together to keep my sanity together.
A short list- weekend walks to pick up morning coffee, Friday night carry-out sushi and pizza, my weekly groceries at the co-op, and most importantly- trips to the weight room- all suddenly off the table until testing results come in.
In my state, testing often requires booking at least 3 days in advance, and it can take another 3-4 days just to get results back. Luckily, everyone in my home works remotely, so this doesn’t put us out too bad. I can’t imagine now non-remote workers manage. Even so, having to toss all the precious little things I’d managed to keep despite the pandemic stung. I even had to put my wrestling watch parties on hold- they took place on Discord, but one of my friends would normally come over to watch.
I’ve worked through a lot of huffy anger and annoyance over the course of the past few days. Losing my ability to get to the gym as the weather turns especially hurts. As a weight lifter, I’m pretty reliant on what the gym offers. Early into the pandemic I got a lot of folks snidely telling me to go lift paint cans. I resisted the temptation to tell them they could in turn pay for my back surgery. Thanks to the pandemic I’ve learned that the gym is actually a need for me, emotionally and physically. Losing it, even for a week, feels awful. I can’t wait to get back to it.
Until then, jogging and biking will have to suffice.
One positive- I’ve gone a week without drinking!
Based on my tracking, that’s actually the longest I’ve since June, which is nuts.
Predictably, I have gained weight. Because no good deed goes unpunished.
I don’t know if I’d say I notice any life-changing effects yet. For all I know, my body is still adjusting to the sudden absence of all the shit it’s normally used to working in overdrive to break down.
A few things I’ve noticed- my runs are going slightly better, I can stay up later working on games or creative endeavors, and I’m actually experiencing REM cycles again- meaning I’m dreaming, and dreaming vividly. I also get incredibly hungry around 10:30 every night- because, surprise!- that’s when I’d normally sit down with a beer or glass of sake. So I’m working on finding ways around that.
I can’t say I’ve felt a huge urge to drink. I occasionally wonder when, or indeed if, I’ll grab a glass of beer again any time soon. But beyond that, it’s been pretty easy to lay off. The fatigue alone was just such a pain to work through, not to mention the way a glass of beer would just kinda pin me into place for the rest of the night. I like how active my brain is now in the late hours.
But I do watch a lot less anime now :(
On that note, here’s what I’ve been playing lately!
Outer Worlds (XBONE)
So, you probably missed it last post- probably ‘cuz I forgot to write about it in my first draft, but I wrote about my Total Kill Run that I just wrapped up in Outer Worlds.
The short and dirty version for those of you who can’t be bothered to go back and read- I tried to do a run where I killed every NPC in Outer Worlds, a space RPG from the Obsidian, and instead got sidetracked with completing the nefarious Board’s story and ended up doing a Board run instead.
I was surprised by how humor and wit the game brings to its commentary on your wanton slaughter. The devs were not bluffing when they said you could kill anyone and anything in Outer Wilds and they even prepared a few nice moments in anticipation that some players would try.
I was disappointed to find that the Board’s mission- and indeed, some of the progression points I followed on my own go-it-alone-and-kill-everything story, mirrored the Good Guy story beat-for-beat, basically shrugging and saying “well, you’re gonna do this anyway, like it or not”. At several given points you can kill everyone you like- but you’ll still have to find that keycard, access that terminal, or visit that far off map point now matter how hard you try to get out of it.
I was finally struck by how little I missed. I skipped A LOT of stuff- almost every sidequest and all the companion quests. And you know what? I had a fine time. I might even say I had a better time. So much time in Outer Wilds is devoted to fetching, traveling, and sitting in load screens. Turns out you do less of all of that when you just go guns blazing into every civilized map.
Some friends earlier this week were talking about revisiting old Bethesda-style RPGs like Fallout: New Vegas and Skyrim. It got me thinking about whether or not I would bother doing that myself any time soon. It’s true those are better games than Outer Worlds. But if the point of Outer Worlds is to echo those positive experiences so closely...what does my recent experience say about the source of that reflection?
Just a thought I’m chewing on. I don’t have a good answer. But feel free to HMU if you have your own thoughts!
NeoGeo Arcade Stick Pro- Art of Fighting, Samurai Shodown, Fatal Fury, World Heroes 2
Friday night I sat down at my desk, dimmed the lights and hooked up my NeoGeo Arcade Stick Pro. On my second monitor, I brought up move lists for King of Fighters ‘95 and started my fighting game learning journey.
I did OK, in my opinion. I stuck to just learning the hero team- Kyo, Daimon, and Benimaru. I even managed to trigger a few level 1 supers. I think I could safely beat the average player at an arcade now- but there’s definitely plenty of system I came nowhere close to learning all the ins and outs. However, after trying out a few subsequent KOF games, it seems like my learning should transfer forward.
I also tried out a few other games on the stick. Art of Fighting and Fatal Fury aren’t games I’ve had prior exposure to. In my experience, they seemed a little slower than KOF. The command lists were definitely shorter. Samurai Shodown was absolutely gorgeous and felt really, really good to play. I could see getting really into it.
My big highlight was World Heroes 2, which I ended up playing most of the night. It’s a bit sillier than the previously noted titles, but it has a really fun roster and a good, medium-sized move list that isn’t too taxing to remember. I had seen some of the characters, like Johnny Maximum, on the Spriteclub roster, so it was cool to see them in their native environment.
Overall, the Arcade Stick Pro is holding up nicely. The stick itself is solid, and the deck is a natural fit on my lap or desktop. I’m not noticing any serious input lag and the buttons seem really responsive. Of all my retro consoles, this might become one of my favorites.
Endless Space 2
AMPLITUDE’s 4x sci-fi has entered hallowed realms of my “Games I will Be Playing 20 Years From Now” list. A massive, sprawling turn-based strategy about managing a spacefaring empire, Endless Space 2 is great for those weeks where I want to play a 4X that I can resolve within 20 hours.
For my most recent run, I once again took up my favored faction, the Riftborn. Every game is a learning experience, so this time around I was determine to try and tackle the massive and deeply inconvenient quests that Endless Space 2 mercilessly slews at you every_damn_turn.
I was mostly successful. I didn’t finish my faction’s quest, but I did complete the Academy quests. Throughout every game the Academy looms as this impartial faction that hires out heroes and provides boons to those who donate resources to it. In the endgame, the Academy offers a quest that forces every active civilization to choose sides regardless of existing alliances. Depending on the results, the last phases of Endless Space 2 can look very different
I finished the questline, unlocked a cool cinematic and learned that next time I should definitely not ignore those quests, however obnoxious they might be. The faction buffs earned from successful completion are....pretty wild.
Sunless Skies
Another week, another dead captain in Sunless Skies. This captain had a particularly long run- I had managed about...15 hours with him before losing him to some enemies that I was not at all prepared to fight. Death comes quick in Sunless Skies- a single bad decision can lead to swift death.
This run I at least managed to bank a ton of valuable supplies and upgrade my engine. My next captain will have a better shot as a result. I’m not sure when I’ll pick the game back up. After a particularly long run I usually take a long break- weeks or even months. We’ll just see what happens.
Pokemon Shield
I’ve finally, FINALLY beaten the endgame of Pokemon Shield. At least, I think I have. I’m sure there’s a few more things to do here or there, but for the most part, I think I’m done. I beat the champion and saw the credits roll. There’s some DLC to visit and more ‘mon to catch, but mostly, I’m done.
I had the opportunity to take care of some trade evolutions and partake in a friendly battle with a friend. It was the first time I’ve done that since...I kid you not...the playground in 5th grade.
It was...really fun?
I’m a deeply casual pokemon player. I don’t search for shiny ‘mon or suss out perfect numbers. I just use who I think looks cool and I try to keep type and consideration in mind. As a result, my friend and I had to agree on some ground rules for average levels- but the result was a compelling match.
I found myself afterwards making plans for another battle night. This tends to happen in November- I get really into Pokemon again for a few weeks. Historically, this is ‘cuz I’m normally traveling a lot for the holidays. That won’t be true this year, but old habits die hard.
Maybe I’ll even bust out my 3DS again soon. Who knows?
Quest 2: Revisited
Last week, I posted some thoughts about the Oculus Quest 2. I’ve spent another week with the headset, testing some new features and trying some more involved experiences. I’m happy to report my thoughts on the machine are still positive.
If anything, my impressions are MORE positive than before. My eyes have grown used to the world of VR. I’ve found a setting on the out-of-box headstrap that I don’t hate. And I’m finding more experiences than I initially suspected I might.
I’ve had a change to run the Link option, for instance, which allows you to use your Quest 2 as a Rift. It’s actually pretty seamless, requiring only a good desktop and a USB cable. My cable seemed to suffer from some bad speeds, so my experience was pretty laggy, but with an approved cable, I have no doubt the Quest 2 could handle just about anything you throw at it.
I finished Superhot, and have only raving reviews to offer. It is a perfect introduction to all the Quest 2 can do. Given limited space, Superhot places you in do-or-die situations where you must dodge, duck and shoot your way through enemies. When you move- time movies- so you will often find yourself forced to take stock of your surroundings before making your next step.
It is sharp, offers a great mix of puzzle solving and brisk action, and even serves as an ad-hoc workout. Picking it up with your Quest 2 is a must.
Encouraged by Superhot, I gave Job Simulator a try. It is a zany VR experience that humorously simulates a number of white collar job environments. It is short, funny, and with no shortage of silly interactions. I spent several minutes in my digital office cube shooting staples into neighboring cubes and giggling at the angry responses of my co-workers. WHO THREW THAT. STAND UP.
Finally, I’ve taken some time to try and get into the streaming world beyond the Mozilla app. It has been both encouraging and...well, not so much. I’ve mostly been dinking around in Bigscreen, an app that offers a number of Pluto TV channels in digital theater environments. You log into a room with other people, who appear as avatars, and you all watch the shows together.
Well, sorta. Most people don’t really watch the shows so much as they throw digital tomatoes at the screen and shout upsetting shit at each other. The server population seems really low, so the massive theaters take on the quality of a creepy XXX cinema, where one always feels a bit apprehensive of who they might meet.
At its best, Bigscreen is genuinely funny. I’ve made nightly stops at the Star Trek theater, which plays old reruns of Next Generation. The most enjoyable moments come in the spirit of MST3K, with witty comments and memes as people throw digital refreshments at the screen. I’ve found myself giggling despite myself.
At its worst, Bigscreen is a deeply racist and sexist hideaway full of the types of folks you’d normally shush the hell out of in a real theater. You can mute people, but it’s a tedious task. A reporting function also exists, but who knows how or if its being enforced at all. Finally, unless you’re doing a film rental, you’re going to be subjected to commercials on everything from erectile pills to The Blaze. I’ve described it to others as being Peak Late Night Cable: The App. If that appeals to you, well, it’s there and it’s free.
I’ve tried streaming my desktop, both on Bigscreen and via Oculus Link. Both were very laggy. There’s a very popular desktop streaming app I could try, but it costs IRL money. Honestly, most of what I’d want out of my desktop streaming I already get from Mozilla.
I like the Quest 2 a lot. I hope we see more experiences tailored specifically to it, as opposed to through the Link function or via desktop streaming.
Dungeons and Dragons
I finally wrapped up my improv sessions with my local DND group. Having just finished The Lost Mines of Phandelver, I wanted to take some time between campaigns to improv and get off the grid a bit.
The result was 4 sessions, 2 hours each, where I had nothing prepared in advance and I let my players take the lead. I gave them a map I’d built of the region and told them we could go anywhere they like.
Tumblr media
My party ended up splitting into two groups- one heading to Castle Grayhawk, and one to Neverwinter. Antics ensued, personal quests furthered, and by the end, everyone felt ready for our next adventure at the Salt Marshes.
An interesting takeaway- when doing improv sessions, I had almost zero fights. I never once broke out the battleboard and only a handful of attack rolls were even attempted.
I, personally, like combat a great deal. So I don’t think that will be my style forever. But it was interesting to see what my sessions could look like without it, especially after such a combat-heavy campaign.
Anime
I’ll be honest- I’ve fallen really behind on this season’s anime. I have so many hobbies, and one thing gets shoved aside for another, necessarily so. This time, it’s anime and manga. I promise I’ll get back on the horse soon.
As the year winds down, I’m already thinking about my experiences over the past year and what my end of the year experience list will look like.
I’ve seen so many amazing titles this year.
Like, I get deeply, viscerally emotional when I think about Re:Zero.
My heart races as I think of the thrilling high points of Tower of God.
I delight in my inner goth kid as I ruminate in experiences like Gleipnir and Berserk.
I’m going to have a lot to talk about. Just thinking about it motivates me to get out there and see more.
