Y'know I always headcanon'ed/considered James and Mary as being a loving couple, absolutely adoring each other. The grow old kind.

Even during the end; James held no contempt for Mary even when she lashed out, he chalked it up to the disease. He never hated her, he hated the disease that took her.

Same with Mary, sure she was bitter, angry and snappy in the hallway scene but she immediately follows feeling guilty/remorseful as it really wasn't her talking. She's frustrated, trapped, in pain; a complete shell of her former self just waiting for the end.

Waiting... waiting... as life so cruelly extends to a day. A month. A year.

Mary adored James but she knew how much of a burden her illness became, she knew there was alot of weight on James's shoulders. Sometimes she finds herself thinking that it'll be kinder to let him go find someone else, a thought portrayed as her lashing out in an attempt to push him away... but he didn't falter, he stayed.

Til death to us part... right?

James adored Mary, you can tell by how he plunges through hell for just a mere chance at being reunited with her again. You can tell by the tidbits of lore; him pouring over medical books just for something, anything to help his wife. By how he mentions her playing the piano while not being good at it, he enjoyed watching her play. How they peacefully sat watching over Toluca Lake, taking in the environment, enjoying each other's company.

He loved her dearly and while he did end her life albeit not the merciful way. While taking another's life is a selfish act, sometimes ending it for someone unable to is kinder. Mary did bounce between wanting to live and wanting to die but ultimately she wanted the pain to end and unfortunately the only way for that to happen is death.

Mary wasn't getting better, she knew it... James knew it even the doctor basically told them to get her affairs in order. She suffered for three long years, it took a toll on them both. James was burnt out, while he'd give anything to have more time with Mary, it wasn't fair on her to suffer. Same with Mary; she wanted him to continue living on after her as long as he remembered her.

In terms of Father's Gambit; The same is still true but Mary's love extended beyond her family to her nephew; Alex. Both she and James planned to adopt him from his family, and raise him alongside Oscar in a new home they planned to buy before the illness struck.

While the pair never told Alex what they planned; he always wondered why the visits were reduce to sporadic phone calls. Medical fees depleted the savings. He wouldn't find out until a decade and some change later.

James gave up Oscar to Frank in the final year as he couldn't cope with caring for both his son and Mary but also out of fear as he didn't want to sully Oscar's memory of his mother being in her diseased state. He wanted him to remember who she was, not what she became. A fear driven by a instance of Mary snapping at Oscar for knocking the vase over accidentally... tears were shed, apologies were given but James didn't bring Oscar with him to visit his mum after that.

James's efforts worked in a way despite leaving him wanton to just see his mum again; Oscar remembers Mary for the loving mother she was eventhough he was very young. However maturity played a part in recognizing that the illness ramped up Mary's emotions but also he was also a bundle of energy as six year old, so... annoying.

My favourite song that I relate to the experience of having BPD is 'Curses' by The Crane Wives

I'm not very good with lyric analysis so I'm taking most of this from luckyleftie on TikTok

It's described as a song about a person who's 'imploding in on themself from old pains and trauma' which perfectly describes the way BPD feels (atleast for me). The feeling of crumbling apart but not knowing how to fix it

There's also the aspect of everything the person says or does only making the situation worse. This is, in my experience, a very common experience for many of us. We try to be better, we try to cope but no matter what we do we end up harming ourselves and those around us

Finally, the singer expresses how their partner is their only safe escape from it all which I connect to the experience of having a favourite person. They feel like the perfect way to get away from all the stress and issues of your daily life

I know this doesn't seem too positive but I see it as a nice way to feel heard when the world around us feels so judgmental towards our issues and problems

I cannot tell you how important it is to sleep! As tempting as it is to want to stay up till 3 am or pull an all nighter to study for a bit longer, you WILL suffer for it the day after.

You will not be able to focus, or retain anything that you studied the night before. When studying for an exam, SAC or big test, always get a good nights sleep before, and, where possible, to help retain information, begin to study regularly as early as possible!
