Reasons to LOVE Dungeons & Dragons: Honour Among Thieves

It's brand new in cinemas, so there are still plenty who ain't seen it, so if you're among 'em best skip this and just GO SEE IT, it's SO well worth it, genuinely it's one of the best new movies I've seen so far this year. Hope you love it as much as I did!

So, yeah, there you go - SPOILER WARNING, FOLKS!!! If you don't wanna get spoiled, RUN!!!

Still here? Okay, here we go then ...

This really is, UNAPOLOGETICALLY, a comedy. I mean yeah, this is a classic fantasy action adventure in the Willow, Krull or Ladyhawke mold, but it is also very enthusiastically POKING FUN at the classic conventions of the genre ... albeit CLEARLY done with great affection and love for the material, as only the best lampoons can be. So this is more The Princess Bride or Galaxy Quest than Your Highness or Spaceballs ...

Chris Pine is ALWAYS at his best when he's being FUNNY, so he is PERFECT here. Edgin is most definitely a bit of a douchebag, but he's the sweetest, most lovable douchebag you'll ever encounter.

Holga. Literally just EVERYTHING about Holga. She's my favourite character in this, this REALLY IS the best role that Michelle Rodriguez has EVER HAD, if you ask me. She's a total badass, a truly AMAZING FIGHTER, but I love that despite her dour demeanour she's actually quite sweet, gentle and really a great innocent in many ways. She's an absolute cinammon roll and must be protected at all costs.

OH MY GODS!!! All the easter eggs, SO MANY easter eggs ... FAR too many to count throughout, all the references and nods and winks to the game itself, all the spells and races and creatures and stuff ... but I love how the movie NEVER beats you over the head pointing any of it out, it just lets you enjoy it. So the proper fans will get a huge kick out of spotting it all, but casual viewers will just enjoy it as rich worldbuilding colour and flavour.

Seriously though, it's a D&D fan's DREAM!!! Not just the mimic, or the owlbear, or the gelatinous cube! SO MUCH to spot ...

Justice Smith's Simon gets THE CLEVEREST and best introduction in the film, I love the theatre scene, he's SO BAD at this while also simulataneously being really great. Totally sums up this gloriously clunky hot mess of a sorcerer ...

the opening is GENIUS, totally sets the movie up as it means to go on - the parole hearing is a brilliant comedic take on the scene-setting infodump which is brilliantly carried through in the way the movie delivers exposition in a fun way or just lets you absorb it through what's happening in each scene. This is the perfect, TEXTBOOK way to do it.

"That is one pudgy dragon!" LOL

Doric. Just EVERYTHING about Doric. Sophia Lillis' tiefling druid is a wonderful diminutive little action hero, so fiesty and capable. I love her. It's just a shame she's not primary coloured, I'd have loved it even more if she'd been blue, or red ...

The Wildshape Escape! XD Yeah, I love that, that's THE BEST set-piece in the whole movie, definitely, when Doric gets cught out spying and has to shapeshift on the fly to get away, and it all plays out in one immersive single shot that just leaves your heart in your mouth ...

Oh, the Speak With The Dead montage, that is comedy GOLD. Funniest scene in the whole movie. And with added payoff at the end! XD

Rege-Jean Page's Xenk Yendar. Oh boy, that paladin is something else. I love how LITERAL he is, he's like Drax in GOTG but much more intelligent. Y'know when Holga says: "You're not a lot of fun, are you?" to him? She's so wrong. I just wish there was more of him in this ...

The heist! Oh, the heist! So good ... the portal trick, it's great, love the way they did that, and then that HILARIOUS bard illusion distraction - Pine skipping the song like a broken record was just chef's kiss!

That wonderful wibbly-wobbly illusory reality thing whenever Simon tries to atune to the Helm ... wow, that is some spectacularly trippy shit. Granted, twice is fine for terms of pacing, but I could've done with a few more scenes of that, it's fascinating.

Hugh Grant really has just become a MASTER at playing smarmy, slimy duplicitous gits now, hasn't he? Forge is a reprehensible prick and I love it.

I love how they made Bradley Cooper a halfling for his cameo. They're never gonna let him live down the fact that he's now probably best known for playing a two-foot-tall talking racoon so forever after he will be a Short King.

Wow, Daisy Head's Sofina is a CRACKING villain, she's just SO CREEPY!!! I love how coolly menacing she is, a brilliant dark necromantic wizard that just makes your skin crawl. Especially at the end ... IS SHE a lich? Is that what they were doing there?

That whole big action climax, the showdown in the city centre is FIRE!!! It's so amazing, so brilliantly dynamic, with EVEN MORE great easter eggs! Simon and Sofina having an insanely awesome "arm wrestling" bout with Mage Hand versus Earthen Grasp (I think that's the spell, couldn't be sure), oh my gods! So cool ... and then the way they neutralised the threat! Brilliant.

Chloe Coleman's Kira is an absolutely adorable delight, and I think she's ENTIRELY JUSTIFIED in how pissed she is at Edgin for abandoning her. It makes the payoff when they finally make up so much better.

And that resurrection scene at the end? Yeah, sure, I saw that coming a mile off, but it was so well done, and they played it so well, that it was still SUCH a powerful scene even so. Just perfect.

Seriously, they just did this whole thing SO PERFECTLY. It's visually STUNNING, really it just looks AMAZING, and the action sequences are BRILLIANT but always feel entirely necessary for the story, which is how you want to do it. Best of all, though, is THE PACING!!! This is such a quick, breezy film, it just barrels along at a spectacular clip, so it never drags. Mark Kermode is right, even though this is two and a quarter hours long it doesn't FEEL LIKE IT, it feels like a super-trim 90-minute movie.

And it ties everything off nice and neat, too. Sure, there are definitely possibilities for the future, going forward if they make more, but if the movie DOES tank then it's fine, because this really does do a great job about feeling self-contained and telling its own complete story, so if we DON'T get more it won't be too big a disappointment ...

Not a Dunmeshi stan BUT BUT BUT the last episode was A FUCKING DELIGHT because of Chilchuck.

First: I can't fucking stan the hero character archetype. Specifically, the "pure hero". OH GOD, I hate them so much. The hero character that is sooooooo self-giving, that only does good and has not a single stain of selfishness. Is always ready to die for the greater good and the only moment you can see 'em doing something bad it's because "they're also dumb and quirky". Take for example the cute clumsiness of Marinette. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA. No, NO! 1000 years in Hell.

I hate how they're depicted like muscled babies in armors ahshasa. "SOOOOOOOOOO INNOCENT AND SOOOOOOOOOO NICE"

Like, call me Eleanor Shellstop because she was right!!! All of this nice characters must have some skeletons in their closets. HOW pretentious yisus CHRIST!!

And for good or bad, my inner compass is trying to locate Laios in this box. I'm definitely wrong, or so I hope, we're only in the WHAT? part of the anime, but still. Call me Villain because I can't stand the "pure heroes" hashahsa. Give me selsfishness, give me hate, give me genuine wrong doing. And BY THE WAY, I'm not talking about the "I hate evil people" kind of hate, that's only the other side of the pure angelic coin.

AND CHILCHUCK GAVE IT TO ME. AAAAAAAA!!!! *FANBOY NOISES*. YOU CAN FUCKING SEE THE MENTAL CONNECTIONS AT PLAY, I WANT TO DISSECT THAT DIVORCED MINION AND SEE HIS MIND.

THE MENTAL ASSOCIATION OF RISK--------STUPIDITY???? I'm pissing myself. A CHARACTER READY TO LIE TO HIS FRIENDS IN ORDER TO KEEP THEM AND HIMSELF ALIVE???????? YES YES YES YES YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSS.

Laios is ready to do anything in order to save his sister, but that's just another "heroic" quality. You could say the same about his special interest and the way he's sometimes blind to his crew needs and emotions. However, he's "the heeeeeeeero" and everything he does eventually turns out to be right. Once again, I'm definitely biting more than I can chew but I keep my point for the general archetype.

The screaming-middle-aged-child was RIGHT about a lot of stuff ashahsa. About how stupid and impulsive a lot of decisions were, AND I'M HERE FOR THAT. That's for me the main difference and my main issue with these characters: That everything they do, no matter how stupid is always rewarded.

Chilchuck was just HMMMMMMMMMM *CHEF KISS IN THE ANUS*. Someone genuinely coward, ready to lie to the friends that saved his life multiple times??? A traitor in the name of fucking security???? An open glimpse to his mind mechanics and how he sees the world in something more fleshed out than the "hero quest"?????????????? A VIVISSECTION OF HIS FEAR, HATE, LOVE AND DEFECTS??????????????????????????????????

Roasting him, EATING HIM.

(I know almost nothing about Kabrus but something tells me that I'd receive my kick then ashhasha)

I have a confession to make dear friend! I hadn't read fanfictions in several years but beating Totk made me go FERAL for Zelda material and explore what's been written since BotW came out.... oh boy the rabbit hole is deep!

There is a lot of good stuff out there but I have read so many fanfics in a short time that the whole thing is a blurry mess in my brain. BUT! There is one in particular that really stood out and left a lasting impression on me: Displaced written by socksock https://archiveofourown.org/works/21128084/chapters/50279321 It was originally written in 2018, before the release of TotK so there are some small and harmless inconsistencies that can easily be ignored because, duh, it was written BEFORE totk. I particularly liked this fanfic because it has all the qualities I'm looking for!! Also several key moments and general ideas in that story are extremely close to my own headcanon to the point it almost scared me. The story focuses on Zelda trying to find her place in post-calamity Hyrule. The characters are very well written and credible, Link's personality is player behavior accurate (MORE OF THAT PLEASE!!!!!!!!) and obsessed with completing his quests backlog and I thought it was amazing. Damn i love a player accurate Link!!

It's a wholesome slow burn romance, lots of humor, it's sexy, does not take itself too seriously but can be very emotional at times. Also, I was amazed by one scene in particular....I don't want to spoil anything for you, but the Big Damn Kiss moment is *CHEF KISS*: the setting, the tone and the resolution HSGDKJS, I would've slow clapped if i could've (I was holding my phone lol)

Reading that scene, I thought to myself : F*** YES! This person gets it hahaha !!

My own Zelink Big Damn First Kiss moment shares a lot of similarities with that fic so, Im going to say it now: when 'll post the Zelink first kiss i'm currently crafting, be sure to know that Socksock and their fic Displaced did something in the same general vibe FIRST! Quest ideas for fantasy stories (turned into a rant, oh no)

The classic “quest to find a magical item that’s going to save the day and the entire world.” Might be a lil’ bit cliché, but do I care? Nope.

It’s...um, a good goal. You know, save the day, stop the entire world from being destroyed by some terrifying force? I don’t care how overused stuff like this. I have absolutely nothing against clichés and I will die on that hill.

Or, on a similar note, a quest to find a magical item for a goal that’s less life-or-death.

The thing is, it doesn’t have to save the entire world. I love more specific, more heartfelt, smaller stories. For example, the movie Onward. Ian and Bailey don’t have to find the Phoenix Gem to save the entire world. They have to find it so they can see their late father for one last time, and in Ian’s case, for the first time.

To find a missing person.

Maybe they ran away years ago. Maybe they’ve been kidnapped for a sinister purpose, or maybe the villain kidnapped said person for a reason they believe is truly good. Maybe they disappeared through the use of magic and no one knows why them. Or the characters need to find a witch who can help them with their ultimate goal.

To destroy an item.

The best example I can think of this is Lord of the Rings, of course. It’s a quest to cast the Ring into the bowels of Mount Doom so it will be obliterated, because it can only be destroyed in the place it was made.

To learn something new.

Maybe they have to go to X to learn about X, which can help them with their ultimate goal. Could be a series or a standalone, of course. But I love it when quests send characters on a journey that just kind of...falls apart, and bam. Not really a quest anymore, but there’s a huge problem that now needs to be dealt with.

To assassinate someone or to commit some other crime.

Why not make the MC a villain? Make it a quest for vengeance, justice, make them feel like they need to teach another character a lesson.

There’s so much room to play with the character arcs. Combine a few of these quest ideas and make something up. Go ahead!

Rambling a little, but maybe a character was wronged by another character and now needs to find a magical item that will give them the power to kill the other character, and then because they both do things that are wrong, they can both have redemption arcs.

Seriously, villain MCs? *chef’s kiss*

Don’t just think big, think small too.

Like I said before, I love the small quests. A goal that’s really close to the MC, a goal that ultimately doesn’t make or break the entire world’s fate. Make it really personal. Think about the small things, the details, the other characters. What would really hurt that character, not the world? Make that happen. If the only thing that breaks your character is the world falling apart, then that’s what needs to happen. But, if it can be something smaller and more personal, then I would love to see it.

Gosh now i can see why a lot of people love Fontaine so much, i really hope they will use the same mechanic on the next update later. Now i need to 100% exploration and do the event (i missed a lot of them 😭 rip primogems-). I'm so conflicted rn, either i should keep saving my primos for Capitano or trying to get one Neuvillette and his sign weapon.. but i currently have 347 IFs 😭 both of them are holding me on the chokehold- 😭 if i wasn't hospitalized back then and busy, i should've around 410-430 IFs rn.. 😔

That's very cute <33 I'm not sure if there's going to be court cases next update though? The 4.1 update is focused on us breaking into the fortress so another trial will probably be later on after all that is done. And don't worry about primos too much, take care of yourself first alright? If you ask me though Capitano is still quite far from releasing so I would go for Neuvillette if you really love him (I'm pulling for him as well!) His signature weapon though... I don't know about that 😅 I never wish on weapon banners unless I have enough wishes and if that character is at my absolute top. So I would think about it carefully. But the decision is up to you!

After reading the new chapter of Pieces before bed, I had Ascended Astarion screaming at me in my dream, or, rather nightmare, as if continuation to the chapter. I woke up so confused.

Anyway. Ascended stalking Rosalie though his palace scared me so much, I was so worried for poor Rose not being able to get away in time, or for something to go very very wrong, and then I breathed out once she got Astarion's soul to her own home, to safety, and THEN THAT HAPPENED and I almost yelled, even if I suspected it would not be that easy to escape Ascended.

That was a rollercoaster. And the flashback brought so much pain with it as I remembered my own playthrough and seeing those rooms, hearing Godey speak... Brrrr. I hate that place. And the way you described the horror of experiencing it, the sudden understanding just how much torture Astarion endured there *chef's kiss* And then that feeling of being trapped and frantically trying to find a way out, the brief relief, and then once again that "oh shit", and "oh we are fine", and "OH SHIT" at the end. The tenderness Rose spoke to Astarion's soul, it reminded me so much of how loved ones talk to their relatives who are in a coma or unresponsive, just to keep them calm and make them feel loved and needed, oh it breaks my heart. She loves him so, so much.

Thank you for this chapter. It was just perfect. Love living through the whole spectrum of emotions in one chapter ❤️

I was trying to do a jumpscare in literature! I read a horror book a few months ago that was trying to essentially write a slasher movie, so I was interested in seeing if I could try and do the same kind of thing :) It's easier in 3rd person, especially in a game where failed Perception checks are an established rule of the world lmao

The Godey room was, in fact, where I had the idea for the fanfic bc it was just so grim and so casually thrown in as part of the 'open this door' quest (not a criticism of the writers to word it that way, every room of that house was a masterpiece).

And yeah... I'm now examining this romance dynamic generally bc both characters have changed so much in this AU as a result of time/suffering. I hope that the final act is rewarding, but I'm glad here that Rosalie's decision to talk to her mason jar house boyfriend conveys what I was trying to get it to convey!

I've seen folks on Reddit do story rankings, so here's mine (spoilers obv):

IMPERIAL AGENT MY BELOVED. This story really hit that sweet spot of "complex moral landscape where you have to make difficult decisions" for me, and was one (along with trooper) where I could tell that Bioware understands politics and bureaucracy delightfully well. I know a game like this is good when I have to sit back and think for a minute about what choice my character would make at a pivotal moment, and I absolutely had to do that at the end of Chapter 1. I also normally hate mind control stuff as a plot device, but they handled it very well (and traumatically)--killing Kothe, and later Hunter, was such delicious catharsis. I also still hold that the Minister was probably the most realistic-feeling authority figure to me out of any such person in the class stories, and I also have deep affection for Shara and Vector. I wanted so much more of all of them, haha. Just a great experience all around.

Sith Warrior. Also a story where I was given a surprisingly great range of options in terms of ethical decision-making, and while the plot was more of a straightforward heroic journey, the characters really made it for me. I loved Vette, Quinn (despite the clumsy writing; having a romance where the usual gendered power dynamics were reversed was fantastic) and Pierce in particular, and I loved getting to play a morally gray patriot and how the game supported me in that. (For instance, the moment where my chick let Yonlach face death on his own terms and knelt in respect to his corpse just. Beautiful. Chef's kiss.) It was also probably my favorite in terms of the actual combat mechanics; I've played as a Marauder and a Jugg, and both are just such fun.

Trooper. SPEAKING OF COMPLEX MORAL LANDSCAPES. From the start, running around on Ord Mantell and encountering everything from war profiteering to mistreatment of prisoners to child soldiers, I knew I was in for a time. Like, this is insane, but my single favorite thing in this storyline was Jorgan's personal quest and how he went through the five stages of institutional disillusionment afterward. I loved Bioware's willingness to portray the Republic as a flawed state with bureaucratic infighting and active discrimination (e.g. poor Elara's defection story)--but still clearly not as bad as the 'has state-sponsored slavery' and 'is an oligarchy run by maniacs' Empire. I didn't get super attached to my own OC, but I am intending to run the expansion content with him just because I liked his dynamics with Jorgan and the authorities so much.

Jedi Consular. I know this is one of those stories people love to hate, and I wouldn't say it was the strongest for me, but I liked it! The politics of it were fun for me, and I got pretty attached to Yuon, thought Qyzen's whole cultural background was cool, and was frankly super disappointed I couldn't romance "ethically questionable guy with an assload of PTSD" Zenith. My main complaint was that my range of choices didn't seem as nuanced as some of the other characters--a lot of options were strictly "good guy" vs. "bloodthirsty maniac". I also did like the play style quite a bit--the glass cannon dynamic was pretty satisfying.

Smuggler: This was actually the first storyline I played, and it was alright. I felt the whole hunt for Skavak was really strong, and I liked the twist with Darmas, but the latter half of the story kind of dragged. Also felt like the romances really strongarmed you--I played a guy who ended up kissing Risha simply because I picked nice dialogue options with her, and I've heard that Corso's flirtations are kind of obnoxious on a female smugg. Overall, though, I loved the criminal underworld stuff, the quippy lines, the varying degrees of unethical I was permitted to be, and the combat style (I did gunslinger, and had a great time with that!)

Sith Inquisitor: The more fantastical, force magic stuff tends not to compel me, but this story was alright, namely because it was balls-to-the-wall insane and that was kind of acknowledged in universe (like, the sheer 'this might as well happen' energy of a lot of the dialogue was pretty funny.) I did feel as though I had less leeway than on Warrior to occupy a nuanced moral space; it felt like the writing was really encouraging me to be a scenery-chewing sadist, which I didn't care for as much. The companions were alright; I thought Andronikos was cool, and Ashara seemed a better-handled Jaesa (albeit one I didn't romance on a male inq because she coded really young to me and it creeped me out.) So yeah, just. Firmly 'okay.'

Bounty Hunter: I'm not sure why I didn't care for this story--I love the crime stuff in Star Wars, I could make questionable decisions, there were some politics involved--all of that was there. I think it just didn't have an emotional core for me. With Smuggler we were really off to the races on a vengeance quest when my ship got stolen; with Consular i got attached to Yuon and was motivated to help her; with Bounty Hunter Jory and Braden got killed before their deaths could really mean much to me and poor Mako (unlike Corso) seemed pretty unequipped to deal with the challenges we were going through. I did like Torian and got attached to him--the whole situation with his dad was feels--but yeah, I just felt unmotivated through much of it. It was disappointing too to get strongarmed into accepting Gault as a companion, as I really liked him in the expansion content; it just was one of those situations where I couldn't fathom why my character would let such a liability onto her ship.

Jedi Knight: I can tell this story was supposed to really be the main event of the game, but honestly? If the agent story was cake, this was white bread. If Agent was a published novel, this was wattpad fanfic. I was actively bored. As previously mentioned, I'm not super into the fantastical force magic stuff that much in general, and most of this story was that--the rest of it felt like sweeping up after the Republic's bullshit decisions without much political context (who the hell thought these superweapons were a good idea, anyway?) Like Consular, I felt like I had little nuance available to me in my choices, and many of the characters either straight up didn't feel like actual people or it seemed like I didn't have much time to get to know them (like, I was genuinely interested in Rusk's trauma and mindset and felt like I had little opportunity to explore that with him.) I got slightly attached to Orgus as a mentor figure, and then--well, we know what happened to him. I played a Shadow and was frankly glad I did because stealthing made it easier to get through the story quicker. Sigh.

worst and/or best character story quest/ hangout? by this i mean the plot and whatnot of the quest itself, but of course its influenced by the character's personality haha

one of my favorites is actually the Limited Lantern Rite version of Xiao's quest, genuinely made me cry once the cutscene panned to him :')

Worst?

I'm sorry, my love... Ayato. Like we just play wedding crasher and political games and don't even get a cool cutscene? I mean yeah, all character quests are just this "oh wow, random NPC has an issue, let's help them" but it felt more prevalent in Ayato's. You may learn about his work and his ways there, but I'd much have preferred something that made me learn more about his personal life/family.

Nilou... as some of you might have noticed I don't like her much. She feels too "Mary Sue" to me. Ms Can Do No Wrong. Although it has gotten better over time, she's okay now. But during the Archon Quest and her Story Quest she annoyed me. The message of the SQ is actually pretty cool but the "wooo we love Nilous and are gifting her free stuff all over the place all the time" during her quest irked me.

Best?

Alhaitham. Das it. The cutscene was really cool. You learn more about him as a character despite it being mostly NPC mumbo jumbo as usual. Then the whole thing with Kaveh at the end where you learn more about their relationship as well. Mwah *chef's kiss*

Baizhu. It may be recency bias but genuinely, it felt really enlightening... I had such a wrong impression about Baizhu all these years. He is so selfless and genuinely just a good dude to the point he actively sacrifices his own health for his patients. And the like 4-minute long cutscene at the end? Hoyo played favorites here for sure.

Almost all limited events explore characters more since they're not just "random NPC has an issue". Kaveh's rn, all Lantern Rites so far, the Albedo Lore during all the winter events? LOVE IT. Just a shame those are limited and new players can't play themselves anymore... especially Kazuha who has most of his lore locked behind events... like??

Favorite Hangout?

Heizou without a doubt. Love the cheeky fucker. The only one who is probably able to top this is going to be Kaveh. He is my pookie and I love him (in a bestie type of way).

the sab brainrot is real. massive massive massive spoilers for season 2 of shadow and bone under the cut. you have been warned.

my overall expectations for s2 were low. really, really, laughably low. however, i have to admit, i came out of s2 (at nearly 5 am, so about 4 hours ago now, ahahahaha kill me) with some...cautious optimism about the potential future of the televised grishaverse. there were several things and changes i honestly loved, several that i hated, and a few i am very curious to see where it will go.

again. major spoilers beyond. if you've opened this read more, this is your LAST WARNING to refresh the page and carry on. if you read this before finishing the season and then come bitch at me, i am going to laugh at you.

the main change that i loved was the showing of the fact that merzost is a corrupting force. like. yes. that's what the books should have done to begin with if lb was at least a slightly better writer. merzost is warned time and time again to be this horrible, universe-breaking rule and yet, we still the darkling getting...no consequences for it in the books? now, granted, they were written as very, very limited first person by an incredibly unreliable narrator by a writer who, frankly, had no business writing in first person. so perhaps the darkling was being steadily corrupted by his usage of the merzost, thus leading to his increasingly, uh, ooc behavior throughout the books.

but, in the show, we got to see it. i LOVED the coughing and the steady weakening of the darkling. i LOVED seeing his increasingly crazed moments. the moment where he throws a mini-tantrum in his stolen room? yes please. loved it. loved it loved it loved it. even his cutting baghra's finger off and sorta tossing it at vladim (was that his name? idr) was just the chef's kiss of his increasingly spiral decline into madness.

i loved also that he had very little overall control over the nichevo'ya. am i probably spelling that wrong? sure. do i care much? not on 4 hours of sleep! 8D that moment in e8 where the nothing attacks alina and the darkling tries in desperation to stop it and almost can't? yeah, baby, we do love to see it. too much so in the books, the darkling is painted as this almost flawless character who is so incredibly strong, how can you stop him? but to see on screen the fact that he's breaking down in private, that he's struggling to control his dark children, that he's erratic and reckless? yes. and at the same time, we see him execute utterly incredible plans. the e7 bit where his grisha are steadily advancing and mowing down nikolai's army? that is how you show the fact that a character is ancient and ruthless and extraordinarily gifted in military combat.

i could rant at length about the darkling so lemme just move on to other things lol.

the crows absolutely stole the first half of the season. tbh, i kinda thought that the 'quest for the sword' was a bit contrived and very much a way to keep them in the general grishaverse plotline after the pekka rollins stuff had ended but the showdown between pekka and kaz was just magnificent. freddy carter, you massively talented bastard. you're gonna be one of the actors of our generations, i can already tell. i am strongly of the opinion that the crows carried the first half of the season on their collective shoulders and i for one would watch 5 seasons of just the crows killing people, stealing things, and all sorts of unresolved sexual tension between kaz and inej. give it to me. i will admit that the last couple episodes, especially where they showed up at the very end with the sword, made me eyeroll hard. deus ex crows was the phrase i used and i stand by it.

i loved that the king was killed in the fight at spinning wheel. get fucked you rapist cunt.

i honestly really enjoyed the altered ending. alina's decision to use merzost to revive mal was excellent. neither i nor my friend finn were expecting the last few minutes. like. holy shit can we talk about that coronation scene? the set up for s3 being jurda parem (if it gets renewed and now i kinda hope it does tbh) AND THE BEE. THE BEE. I SCREAMED, I LITERALLY WAS LIKE AAAAAAHHHH WHEN I SAW THE BEE.

i will be the first to admit that i despised kosrow with the intensity of a thousand burning suns but the setup was gloriously done. book fans will know immediately what is coming. fuck kosrow but kudos to the overall team for that delicious, tiny, two-second teaser. loved it.

we're not talking about david. nope. denial is a river in africa and i am swimming in it.

i really enjoyed the connection between alina and the darkling. i thought it was well done. the scene where baghra breaks it and severs the darkling's hand was just. urgh, the chills. i will admit that i disliked heavily the fact that baghra was kinda the plot donkey - ie the one who carries the plot and explains it but i see why they went that way. it was easier in the book for alina to sow hints of the mal/firebird thing ("mal's a bird?" jesper you absolute icon) whereas in the show, we don't really get her thoughts like that. i liked the sea whip bit. i am of the opinion that the whole 'morozova/black heretic/only one darkling' was handled...not necessarily poorly but i think the other characters should have been made more aware of that from the start and their reactions more obvious. in the book, that realization was just utterly shaking when it was delivered but here it felt hollow and lacking. idk maybe i'm just being overly critical. it's possible.

and also...mal! book!mal is probably one of my top five least favorite literary characters...ever. and yet, the show turned him around so beautifully! archie's performance was stirring, moving, commanding. his chemistry with jessie was off the charts and i honestly loved the ending for him. i love that he was not the one trying to hold alina back. i love that he wasn't afraid of grisha, that he didn't try to stand in the way of the nikolai alliance. everything i hated about mal in the books, they removed, including that gods awful affair he had with zoya. thank all the gods and saints for that.

so yes. cautious optimism. i had my doubts and there are things i did not like (david...oh david...) but overall, it was not anywhere near the absolute dumpster fire i was expecting. and hooo boy was i expecting.
